Starting point is 00:00:05 Hello everybody and welcome back to the B1 podcast with Matt and Tommy. We are very much in review territory and we are here to go into our 2024 F1 season predictions. So this is essentially in the format of our podcast where we have things like biggest good surprise, biggest flop. And this is what we did for the season right at the beginning before we even had the first lights out. Isn't that right, Tommy? Before testing even as well. So we didn't even get to see the pecking order. Some people, they do predictions after testing.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And they're like, oh my God, that's the moment. We're going to be quick. Yeah, yeah. That last year ruined it. It's much more fun when we did before testing, where we don't have a clue of the pecking order, although arguably this year, it's changed throughout the season. So maybe, no, but we will still continue to do it before testing
Starting point is 00:00:52 because it's a lot more enjoyable to make our wild predictions and then see how wrong we were. Absolutely. Now, if you haven't seen the Race Review podcast, Tommy is the prediction champion winner. A champion winner, just a champion, that'll be fine. Of the Race Review Predictor Championship, that's a lot of words. I won the championship table prediction.
Starting point is 00:01:15 So this is technically the decider, maybe. Depends who wins. If I don't win, then it's not the decider. And we'll go to another two episodes of reviewing something or other that we've done. Okay, let's get straight into it because why not? Biggest good surprise. For the season, my biggest good surprise, was Yuki Sonoda.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Why? Did you kind of like put something in my tea bags or something, Tommy? Because you're supposed to be the Yuki fan boy. And I just thought Yuki was going to be fired this season. Don't get me wrong, he was decent, but I don't think that it certainly can't take a biggest good surprise point in my opinion. No, I don't think so. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:01:56 I think he was, I think he was great at times, but was he consistently great throughout the whole year? this is a difficult one so I'll just get into it that my biggest good surprise was also Yuki Sanoda so it doesn't actually matter in terms of our battle against each other
Starting point is 00:02:14 whether there was a point or not I guess it is depending on how you look at it because we predicted at the start of the season that we thought RB were going to be this amazing team
Starting point is 00:02:24 we thought Yuki Sanoda I think this was more who was going to get a lot of points finishes and he did at the start of the season he had an amazing start to the season
Starting point is 00:02:31 it wasn't unbelievable, but then if you'd said that he scored kind of double the points of Daniel Ricardo and made Daniel Ricardo lose his seat, you'd kind of go, well, actually, that sounds like a big good surprise. But also at the same time, it wasn't like he was one of the stars of the season, really, was he? No. I feel like you maybe have to be like a top in like the top 10 drivers of the year to even kind of warrant a good surprise. Yeah, he finished 12th, didn't he, in the driver's championship? And the first half of the season, don't get me wrong. wrong.
Starting point is 00:03:03 It looked great. He was right up there, yeah. Yeah, it just didn't really, I mean, he had, what, three retirements in the last sort of nine races. And yeah, it wasn't the best end of the seasons for Yuki. So, again, it doesn't really matter because we both literally went for the same driver, which I think next time, next year, we can't go for the same thing. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So, okay, no points for both of us. Yeah, we'll get no points. Biggest flop. So, I went for Fernando Alonzo. I feel like you're going to now judge, let's hear your case. Here my case for Fernando Alonzo getting biggest flop. I mean, 2023 was a great season for him, wasn't it? It was a really good season.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And this season was rather mid, wasn't it? It definitely wasn't a season he will look back on fondly. He didn't flop, though, did he? Let's be honest. He wasn't a flop. Ninth in the championship, though, you know what I'm saying? He finished. 9th in the championship is actually. a lot higher than he probably should be
Starting point is 00:04:10 based on how bad that car was at the end of the year. Okay, hold on a second. In 2023, he finished fourth in the championship with 206 points. This year he finished ninth with 70. That's almost a third of the points he scored in 2023. Yeah, but has he flopped, compared to his rivals around him and things like that,
Starting point is 00:04:33 like, yeah, he just smashed his team. Part and parcel of that is also the car and just the general season. right we're not we're taking out the fact that Aston Martin aren't very good this is a floppy season like this is I feel like a lot of these are going to end up going to the the fans here yeah I mean for Fernando Alonzo he didn't get on the podium once he had four in five for the in 2023 he did not even finish fourth once but he's not himself has he hasn't flopped he's not been a you wouldn't look at that season ago Alonzo's not been bad
Starting point is 00:05:08 right sorry but if Ghazley's car blows up in Vegas and we've done biggest flop, he still gets flopped even though his car broke down. Yeah, but you're talking about a whole season. Yeah. Is this a TBC? All right, it's a TBC. We'll throw it to the audience just to remember everybody. Just to remind you of the facts, one third of the points of 2023, no podiums and finished ninth compared to fourth. Let me know in the comments below.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Tommy, what did you go for? So, I went for a team for biggest flop. and that team was Mercedes and I am calling a biggest flop a 100%. They had a lot of wins though didn't they? A lot of wins. Did they have a lot of wins?
Starting point is 00:05:54 They had one, two, three, four. Four wins. Four wins? Four wins. That's not a floppy season. It sure is. No way. So Mercedes had, right, now, Your Honor,
Starting point is 00:06:06 Your Honor, Your Honor. You're on a, you're on a. I'm coming back at you. Now, what have nothing? You go first. No, you go first. What's what you did. Okay, fine. Mercedes scored more points this year than did last. Right. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:06:15 I will, no, no, I will then present you with some real facts. So Mercedes had their worst Constructors Championship season since 2013. Last year. 2012. Sorry. Well, you're thinking of finishing position here. Finishing position. I am going with points scored.
Starting point is 00:06:36 No, no, no, no. And they scored. Yeah, but that's like saying that. you know, points scored. There's more points available in the championship. I will fight you for every point, yeah. Okay, right. This is the slam dunk.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Mercedes finished. A hundred and ninety eight points behind a customer team using their engine. Less than 200. That won the World Championship. That is a flop. That is a flop.
Starting point is 00:07:02 100% of flop. I think it's completely underplayed what a flop Mercedes are this year. If McLaren, with a flop, Mercedes engine, which we say so many times, you can't win with someone else's engine. And McClan have won an absolutely dominated Mercedes. That's pretty embarrassing for Mercedes, so I think that's a flop.
Starting point is 00:07:23 All right. Well, I tried my best, and we'll see if people agree with you. Mercedes fans, help me out here. Get in the comments and tell Tommy's washed. Right. Next segment is loses a race seat. I predicted, well, I said yes, first and foremost, And then the additional part...
Starting point is 00:07:42 Oh, don't start doing technicalities. Your honour! I believe! The additional terms and conditions was added for a bonus point. I said yes, someone would lose a race seat. No, it wasn't yet to predict it. Rubbish! Yeah, it did.
Starting point is 00:07:57 So you get a point if nobody does, and I have to get a point if I get the right person. That is... That's disgusting. I feel like we need to check this now. I think we do. Let's go. Let's get the receipts out. Let's watch the video. Get the receipts out because I'm ready. Okay, so we've reviewed the footage and I did not say yes. I felt like in my head I said yes. And I think that in the future, yes should be one point and then a bonus point should be if you get it right.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Okay, we'll clarify that for next year. So will, so the question is really will someone lose that race seat? Yeah, I think that's fair. Which of course, yes or no. Several. Okay, fair enough. Because then, yeah, you get a 50-50 chance and then you have to, you back up for a bonus point. Exactly. So, half a point? Okay, fair. Because we didn't put the...
Starting point is 00:08:47 No, I didn't think so, because... No, no, no, no. Also, yours is so wrong that you deserve a minus point, I think. No, but the driver you said was going to lose their seat to the driver actually got replaced himself. So I reckon that's surely minus point. But what if Perez loses a seat after the season? What if we put this... Then it's technically not to the 2020-4-on season anymore.
Starting point is 00:09:07 There's all the 2020 wives these news. There's a lot of terms and conditions in this podcast. Good back and forth. Okay, so well done. Zero points. And I said no one, which was also equally as bad of a prediction because we had quite a lot of replacements this year. We did. So we were both washed with that one.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Okay. Next one. New race winner. I backed Lando Norris. And Lando Norris did win races this year. So I will take that point. Thank you very much. And well done to Lando for winning races.
Starting point is 00:09:41 And I went for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. And they both won. So what, okay, you're correct. Yeah. But can we talk about what that means? Because that means is there must be some kind of, because we had this discussion at the time of predicting both. And it's like, well, if one of them doesn't win, you can't get a point,
Starting point is 00:10:06 which I was like absolutely fine. But they both won. So is that a double pointer? I'm going back to the footage. Give me one moment. You can't list out like, oh, I think five people will be new race winners and you get five points for it.
Starting point is 00:10:19 This is a point. Why not? You know what I mean? What? But then if you don't get it right, you get none. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. I'm agreeing.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Yeah, if one McLaren drive wins, I get none. I don't agree, Matt. Passed Matt, don't agree. Can I give the double? I don't think you gave me extra points for the loser's race seat, and then the fact that I don't know. added in that Danny Rick gets
Starting point is 00:10:37 into Formula One. Maybe we'll Michael Massey it later. We'll find out how close we are in London. We'll figure it out. We'll figure it out in a year. I love how we said we'll figure it out in a year. And that's exactly what we're doing. This is exactly what we've done.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Here's your honour. Your honour, here's my, here's my case. Go on. Because our biggest flops are both contentious. I'm really massing this. now. Let's take the point each for them or zero because they're both they're both kind of I personally think you could argue for both of them. New race winner we get a point each we open up to the comments if I get to. Okay. I mean look it's a fantastic prediction you've
Starting point is 00:11:24 done very well there. It is this is because there's not many other good ones so um so yeah we'll open up to the comments. The comment section has been called upon once more. Please let us know. Next up, biggest meme on the grid. I went for Oscar Piaastri. Who was the biggest meme on the grid? Yeah, it's a very good question, actually. Were there many memes?
Starting point is 00:11:55 Now we look back on this, because last year, I think I went for, no, you went for Fernando Alonzo, which was correct, because he basically became an absolute meme lord. It's not really been a memeable driver this year, in my opinion. and maybe, no, I don't think there has. I mean, we made Che Gueguineur meme for driver ratings, but apart from that, there's not really been, it's not been a meme year, has it? No, it hasn't.
Starting point is 00:12:25 No, not enough memes. Okay, Oscar Piazrino points. And I went for Hass, and my logic for Has was that they were going to be embarrassing, they're going to be awful, they're not going to score a single point. And how wrong we were? because they're essentially a tractor and instead they were brilliant.
Starting point is 00:12:45 They certainly were. Okay, let's go to our next prediction, world champion. I, in this set of predictions, went for Lando Norris. Before testing. If that had come in, before that is. Fair play, yeah, if that had gone in. Look, I backed Lando. I really did.
Starting point is 00:13:08 And at one point there was a chance, Brazil. if things had gone better, but they didn't. And yeah, reflecting on this now, he finished P2 in the championship, half a point. Half a point because he almost did it. Yeah. Predicting Lando before testing, I think I even remember at the time people just been like,
Starting point is 00:13:31 oh, this is a ridiculous prediction. Crazy to think that he was actually, you know, a few races from the end were going, Lando could win this championship. Madness. Of course, no points because it wasn't correct. Yeah, I'm looking at the comments right now on this YouTube video. If McLaren had any hope this season, I think Mac just jinxed the S out of it.
Starting point is 00:13:52 I feel so bad for McLaren what a disastrous year they're about to have. Oh, this is a good one. Lando going from no wins to world champion as some next level delusion. Oh. Well, there you go. He was a... He finished P2 there, didn't he? It really did.
Starting point is 00:14:07 It's actually really funny, generally, just reading comments from 10 months of 10 months of ago to really think about how much the season has changed based on what we're saying, because this is another one. I want to see Yuki Sunoda making a podium at least once this year. The R.B. hype was crazy, probably even more than McLaren. We're about to watch Red Bull win 24 out of 24 races this season. Little did we know. Little did we know.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Little did we know indeed. Tommy, who did you go for? I went for Max Lestappen, which was the Boulder. of the two predictions, of course, because inferior car and all that. And it came in, so one point to me. When this would put in? I'm not sure about that one, Chief. Not to start testing.
Starting point is 00:14:54 No. But, yeah, I thought it was going to be a whitewash bit, a lot closer than we thought. Absolutely. It certainly was. Let's go to our one crazy prediction. I said, Charles Lecler would have more wins than pole positions. and I am going to kick off, okay?
Starting point is 00:15:16 Yes, okay, this is brilliant, by the way. Let me kick off. Because if it wasn't for a stupid, inherited pole position in Spa, this was right. So, no, you're not going to claim points. I think, I think I deserve something here. I deserve it. I do. I deserve a consolation prize.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Because that's ridiculous that I haven't got a point for that when, in things. of being fastest in qualifying to wins, Shah was three two up. But Max Verstappen decided to have a grid penalty. Mare, me, me,
Starting point is 00:15:53 why couldn't you just driven off into the distance, Max? Indeed. But I think this is open up to the floor. No, you can't because we gave you a point for the prediction and the actual predictions for a poll,
Starting point is 00:16:05 so no. Yeah, but this is a different reality. This is a different reality where I need to win. But I think, that of all of them, I've been, I've been robbed in broad daylight. It is quite funny that that was that close because...
Starting point is 00:16:19 That's a phenomenal prediction. That is a really good prediction, I'll give you that, because it was very close. I think it was, it was a laughable prediction when you made it because we thought it's going to be another season, Max dominating, winning most of the races, Charlotte at the odd pole position, maybe, because he didn't, of course, didn't win a single race in 23. So for that to almost come in, fair play, but it's Syrac. Oh, well, hold. Okay, so people out there, if you fancy commenting on the YouTube channel,
Starting point is 00:16:48 I will accidentally pin someone that supports me and then go and like that comment. Okay, thank you very much. Okay, my one crazy prediction was RB, V-Cab, Visa Cash App, whatever you want to call them, beat Al Pene in the Constructors Championship. Oh, wow. This was looking at the easiest win, the easiest point of the lot, until Brazil happened, and they're like, no, Tommy, you can't have this point.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And then Gassley just became the greatest of all time for the last five races to completely dominate and make sure it didn't happen. So no points for moi. That's crazy. Oh, goodness. Great. Both so, so close. Okay, let's go to our final prediction, which was our bold one that we made in the summer break. And mine was that Max Verstappen would win no more than three races after the summer break.
Starting point is 00:17:40 and he won two. Fair play. The wheel is on display right now, okay? The knowledge of the wheel is here. That is a great prediction because, of course, before the summer break, of course, they dropped off in form, didn't they? Quite a lot, Max, and hadn't won the last few before the summer break, but, well, we'll get into my prediction next, so I was kind of like, no, still.
Starting point is 00:18:07 I'll still get a few wins. Couldn't see it happening. but boy did uh was it a lot crazier than we expected so yeah we're getting on to my bold prediction that I made in the summer break and again I've been robbed at the death mustappen extends his championship lead so I worked this out it was 78 points before we got to zanvort and he won by 63 and actually before the final race after kata he was he'd extended his lead. So for that dive bomb on Piastri. So this was on until after Qatar because he was 80 points clear. And I thought I was going to bag this point. But then of course, Lando brilliantly won in
Starting point is 00:18:51 Qatar and Max had a bit of a stinker. So no points. Goodness gracious me. Okay. I think we've massied this again, you know. I think this championship is in the balance now and it goes to the comment section because we both score a point for biggest flop. We're just going to say that right now. So one one. Then I got new race winner, you got Lando and Oscar. So two all, potentially your three two up. You got world champion rights, you're four two up. And then I got that one right four three up. But then that's only if new race winner is two points, which I think is an absolute load of rubbish. And then also we're throwing in there the Charlotte Claremore wins in position. You can't have that Charlotte Clare one. That's just wrong.
Starting point is 00:19:32 But in the spirit, but in the comments basically need to decide whether it's, is a draw for the race winner thing, or if Landonarosnikyipiastri is a double pointer and I win. I don't like those odds. I want a chance to win as well. Well, just write in the comments. He's won. There's going to be a lot of comments in this one, I think.
Starting point is 00:20:00 But that was really good fun, actually. I enjoyed that. And I look forward to seeing what our 2025 season predictions look like and how they will age over the course of the year. And I think we did all right. Some things were horrendously off, but some things were very close indeed, Tommy. What are your final thoughts?
Starting point is 00:20:17 My final thoughts are we genuinely joke about Michael Masseying our predictions and things. But of course, we make them and then have no idea how a race is going to unfold. And I think it's actually insane for a second year in a row. They always seem to be incredibly close. Because if you think there's nothing to. to stop as just like we make these predictions and one of us could be absolutely miles off every week and the other but this is two years in a row now that every predictions kind of video that we've ever made seems to be separated by like two points like how the the race review won over 24
Starting point is 00:20:54 races and god how many predictions we make per race like seven or eight so that's like what like nearly 200 predictions and we're separated by two points it's actually quite insane so yeah yeah We're, uh, somehow it seems to happen. So we'll see next year if that continues or if one of us just runs away. Watch one of us win by 50 points now next year and my biggest loss finished. And there's me going, well Alonso was 15th. I actually think, uh, I said he was going to win. So just to catch me up, let's give me a point.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Uh, love it. Okay. Well, that is it. Thank you, everybody for tuning into, uh, these prediction reaction review stuff. I do genuinely really love going back through all of this stuff. It feels like we go back. a blast into the past. So thank you everybody for tuning in. We will see you soon. For driver ratings. For the full drive ratings. We'll see you there. We'll see you for a little bit more
Starting point is 00:21:47 content and maybe some P1 live shows are still available but we are going to be touring. So maybe see you in like Birmingham or Manchester as they might be ones that are left. Bye. Goodbye. It's so funny the way that your microphone is kind of placed right. now, your shirt just says moo. Mooh, it does. Mooh pre. So for audio listeners, he's wearing a monoco top.
Starting point is 00:22:15 It's covering the N and the A and the C. It's lovely. And speaking of chores, go and milk your cows. Can't say that. Can't say that. No. There's the intro.
Starting point is 00:22:35 You're peering on a cow. P1 is a stack production and part of the A-cast's creative network.
