Starting point is 00:00:05 Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 podcast with Matt and Tommy. We have been just graced with the best qualifying of the year. We hype it up. We say Monaco is always the best Saturdays, but where's the lie? Where is the lie? Because constant action, even in practice, it is thrilling to watch. and Monaco delivered Q1, Q2, Q3 of just pure beauty. It did. It delivered again and it always does in qualifying.
Starting point is 00:00:43 You know, at least, you know, whatever happens tomorrow, it is a staple that you're going to get an absolute banging qualifying session and we did again for the millionth year in a row. It was so fun to watch cars going absolutely flat out. And another incredibly close qualifying again. Another one. Hell yeah. Right, let's get into Q1, shall we? Where the bottom five were Bortoleto, Bearman, Gasley, Stroll and Collabinto. And let's reflect actually with a question about something that happened prior to all of qualifying. And that was the Bearman incident, the fact that he has a 10-place
Starting point is 00:01:21 grid penalty. P1 Patriot member Drippy asks, why don't the FIA mandate an instant red flag screen on the steering wheel? Ollie's penalty is absolute rubbish. Now, to confirm, I have watched the clip back several times, a red light does come on. I think it's on both sides of the steering wheel, a little red light to inform Berman that there was a red flag. And I'm pretty sure it was instantaneous. So that side of things, there is really no excuse. I do feel sorry for Berman. I mean, not that, you know, didn't really lose that many positions.
Starting point is 00:01:57 But in the fact that Sines was going incredibly slowly, but of course, It's a red flag. I think it was probably the fact he wasn't on a lap. New Bayman was coming and there was a red flag. So he's going really slowly. It was a massive difference in speed. And so you kind of go, well, the letter of the law is one thing. But then you have to have some kind of common sense as well because the closing speeds were very, very, well, it was massive.
Starting point is 00:02:23 So I do feel a little bit sorry for Ollie. But at the same time, had he reacted to the red flag immediately, he may well have got away with it. Remember just the braking power that these cars have. You can slow down very quickly indeed. So that's probably where the stewards deemed it still a penalty. It was close, I think, between getting away with it and not, but he unfortunately fell on the side of a 10-place grid penalty. I disagree that it was close.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I think it's a slam dunk. If you overtake under a red flag, you get a penalty. And I think it's 100% percent of a lot. I'm saying this side is going really slow. And Berman is three, four, five car length back. then there's a red flag you have to have some common sense that he can't just slam on the brakes.
Starting point is 00:03:06 He should have slammed on the brakes there. I think that's what I'm saying. No, no, yeah, that's what I'm saying. If it hadn't been any closer between the two of them, Bearman might well have got away with it because of the fact they were closer. That's why I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Yeah, maybe. I think the thing is here that I've seen a lot of people very unhappy with this penalty. Formula One posted a clip about it, didn't they? And the absolute flood of comments going, this is an absolute ludicrous penalty. the problem here is that Olly Behrman kind of took it into his own hands and said,
Starting point is 00:03:35 well, actually, I thought it was more dangerous to slam the brakes on. So he's kind of admitted that he had seen the red flag, and you can't really take the law into your own hands and then argue afterwards. So I think it is definitely a penalty and justified. I mean, thankfully for Olly Behrman, he's not the Hassin all the way up in eighth place, because you imagine how guessing it would have been then. he'll just start at the back. And to clear up as well for anyone confused,
Starting point is 00:04:04 the camera illusion of it being a yellow panel is exactly that. It's an illusion. We had it many years ago with Hamilton at Monzer, I believe, where there was questions about whether it was a red flag that was being shown on the panel or not. That was a red flag, despite it may be looking yellow at certain points. So just to clear that up as well. But anyway, into qualifying we go.
Starting point is 00:04:25 question from P1 Patreon member Abu Dhabi 2021 Survivor if Lewis gets a penalty is it justified or not given that the pit wall didn't provide
Starting point is 00:04:34 accurate information regarding Max so this is of course where Hamilton up the hill in that sort of left hander as we head into
Starting point is 00:04:42 that wonderful well I guess the first sector split is just down the hill after that isn't it but yeah
Starting point is 00:04:47 that sort of left hand at turn three I believe where Hamilton actually crashed of course in practice it is
Starting point is 00:04:53 without a doubt a penalty in my opinion I think it's impeding and we were discussing this on the watch along impeding is impeding it doesn't matter that Vostappen got through it doesn't matter that you know both of it those are the consequence
Starting point is 00:05:08 the actual thing that happened is that Hamilton slowed down because his team his team radio engineers said that Vastappan well no he slowed down to let him through then he sped up because he was told that Max had slowed down he hadn't slowed down at all
Starting point is 00:05:24 He'd break for turn one probably. And then, you know, a bit of confusion, but it doesn't matter. It's the team, the driver, they are all one entity. And especially in a competitive session, in my opinion, that is, that sadly, it should be a penalty. It should be a penalty. And I'm sure, you know, the fact that Massachusetts happen is behind Hamilton on the grid now as well. Red Bull will surely be arguing that one at the stewards constantly because you can't take, circumstances into it. And yes, it wasn't the, you know, you can blame communication and stuff,
Starting point is 00:06:02 but like you say, it's a team sport. You know, not saying it's the same level of incident, but of course, yesterday, Lance Stroll had a miscommunication with who was on track and penalised. And obviously there was a crash there, so it's more, more dangerous. But he got a one-place penalty, and that was a practice session. So you can't really take circumstances in. to just because someone gets through or if Hamilton didn't get through you just go oh well it doesn't matter anyway that's not how they decide penalties
Starting point is 00:06:33 and it ruined Max's lap of course maybe he gets away with it I'm thinking in my head right now that Max got away with one didn't he in Miami against Stroll which I'm sure a lot of people will be remembering as well they may be hoping that one gets swept under the rug
Starting point is 00:06:53 and they forget about it, but I'd be amazed of Red Bull, don't try and protest because it would be an extra position on the grid. Not the only drivers to get messed up laps as well, because of course,
Starting point is 00:07:05 Kimi Antonelli, who you've kept very quiet about Q1 Tommy and not mentioned it so far. Well, technically he got through to Q2, so we're... He still crashed, my brother. We're talking about Q1,
Starting point is 00:07:14 and this is where he crashed, was Q1. He made it through to Q2, but his car did not. Antonelli made a mistake and very easy to, be done. Hadjar had done it in practice with his left rear, obviously coming out the tunnel,
Starting point is 00:07:27 the left-hander, and Antonelli just breaking his suspension on his front left, and that's curtains into the wall he goes. Hadn't looked great. Mercedes have looked horrendous this entire weekend, to be honest with you. The minute you said Antonelli's going to win, they went, how do you build a car again? So it's been, it's been Paul from both sides of the garage, really, both from pace and obviously with Russell having his issue as well, which we'll get onto in Q2. And then I guess the question is now we were discussing this, weren't me, Tommy, on the watch along as well, what do Mercedes, what do Kimmy, and now obviously George as well do. With Kimmy Antonelli, we disagreed. I said that if he can start 15th and he doesn't have to change his gearbox and
Starting point is 00:08:07 everything else and start from the pit lane anyway, then I think you take 15th, you know, try to navigate the turn one carnage. And if you want to then do this crazy one stop, do it from 15th, rather than starting from the pit lane, losing 10 seconds off the back of the field, and then pulling your pit stop. It's just, it's all a time race, in my opinion, this sort of two stop, especially if you're going for an early pit stop. So that's what I would do. You mean lap one. Yeah, yeah. Sorry, yeah, stop on lap one. But you would do it in my head from a strategic point of view from 15th rather than off the back. Yeah, the Antonelli crash, bad, bad moment of him turning in too early and just completely destroyed, you know, the front suspension. I,
Starting point is 00:08:53 I did joke on the watchalong that it kind of plays into my hands more. And I am still backing it because... Wait, you're still backing a Kimmy win? No, well, I'm not against it. I'm not against it. No, actually, George has ruined it, actually, and we'll get onto this next. But the fact that a quick car at the back would do this crazy strategy, which we'll get onto in a bit, actually, that was my thinking.
Starting point is 00:09:18 I didn't think Antonelli was going to be absolutely rapid around here. I'm thinking spawns out of nowhere in this crazy pit stop thing. And you never know tomorrow because, yeah, it's going to be very interesting to see what Mercedes do. And actually, whilst we're talking about that, someone that was watching along and sent a message during our quali chats was that there is a possibility if we get a safety car that we could see a pit stop and then another pit stop under the same safety. car. Now this is a loophole that I've not seen. No, you can put under a safety car. You then change onto some hard tyres after you've changed onto some mediums. The only thing, of course, there's been a lot of tiny little bits of information that perhaps you've missed. And obviously one of them is that you have to run the medium or the hard.
Starting point is 00:10:07 That is a mandatory tire that you have to run at some point. You can't just plonk on three softs and then you're done. So yeah, it's going to be interesting, isn't it? If we do get a safety car, I am fully expecting, unless this loophole is clarified by tomorrow, that this will be exploited. I can't believe we've not heard more. I can't believe we've not heard more about it personally. I really, you know, I'm glad that we've not, they've not tried to implement a pit stop window where you have to do it
Starting point is 00:10:33 because I think that would ruin the kind of craziness of it. Absolute chaos though, wouldn't it? Because you think about, say, for example, the two Ferraris, the two McLaren's up at the front, they pit fine that first time under the safety car, then they get all bunched up, then you have to then double stack again, everyone that's behind their teammate
Starting point is 00:10:52 is going to get utterly screwed, surely. Because they either take the pit stop and wait or they carry on with the safety car and then they've got another pit stop. They can have a double double stack basically, which is absolute carnage. This is why I think this race could be absolute carnage because you have a lap one safety car.
Starting point is 00:11:14 There's no way, Bortolato, Bearman, Gassley, Stroll, Colopinto, even the two Merks, get both your pit stops out the way and then you're at the back of the train and we go and you've basically got 30, 40 second advantage and you're on the back of the train
Starting point is 00:11:33 so it's going to be chaos I'm very surprised you haven't heard anything about any kind of loopholes whether you have to do a competitive lap and it doesn't count as a safety car lap maybe that's something in the rules already I don't know but I don't think it is I've not seen anything
Starting point is 00:11:51 but we will wait to see if there's any clarification because it will be fascinating but it also could ruin the entire race if we do just get all the pit stops out of the way unless we have Bortoletto leading and everybody's had the pit stops then sign me up I can't wait
Starting point is 00:12:06 I could just the thing is just the way the way it is now that if we had an absolute carnage race and something crazy happened I don't want to hear anyone complaining that it's artificial and ridiculous because the amount of moaning about Monaco and they've actually tried to do something different. We'll see. Yeah, it's created a lot of intrigue. I'm wondering after this
Starting point is 00:12:27 year whether next year, if we go for the same thing, teams will then have figured out, all right, so that was the best way to do it. Yeah, please don't be an elimination qualifier set up where they go, oh yeah, this doesn't work, does it? And they realize it during the same race. Right, let's head to Q2 then, where the five drivers out were signed Sonoda, Holkhamberg, Russell and Antonelli. P1 Patriotry member, R&B, sheep. Do Mercedes risk getting pit twice really early? Overtaking is almost impossible
Starting point is 00:12:53 when they start 14th and 15th with almost no hope of points. So of course, we were talking about Antonelli there and perhaps something he could do differently. Maybe I'm just putting this out there. Antonelli just binned it because why not? And then Russell, they just turned his car off. They went, hold on. I think we're cooking here.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Let's get both Mercedes at the back, work together. Obviously, I'm being ingest here. But I think that there is something that they can do differently for sure. With Russell, it's devastating, isn't it? To have a power issue for him, he almost managed to roll it all the way back to the pits because he hit a downhill section and then the marshals were laughing along as well
Starting point is 00:13:29 when they were pushing the Mercedes. But they have to do something different. I can't imagine they would put both of them on the same strategy. I don't know what sort of different thing you could do that's also really aggressive rather than pitting really early. But it's going to be interesting to watch. And one that, yeah, as you say, to have a fast car towards the back that might be pulling something different will be interesting. The only problem is, yes, say we don't get a safety car lap one.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Russell, Antonelli, they pit early. They will catch the back of the pack. And then we will get that sort of, it won't be as if, you know, Norris at the front is going 10 seconds a lap slower than everyone else because he has to still get two stops out the way. So I don't think we're going to see that same train that we've seen in years gone by. So I think there's only going to be a level of success you can get with that. Exactly. This is why I think it's a really good idea is because you can't do the strategy of just backing the whole field up because you know you can't be overtaken. You can't do that anymore because you run the risk of basically being undercut by the entire field,
Starting point is 00:14:32 maybe even worse, someone that's done two stops and you've not done a single one. you can't back the field up because they've got 40 seconds on you. So the Mercedes strategy team in a weird way will probably just have, now they've kind of got a weird advantage that they can just throw away anything and it doesn't matter about the result. They can just go for an absolute gamble. So maybe with one of them like an Antonelli, they do do a double stop straight away. And then George Russell maybe gets one stop out of the way
Starting point is 00:15:06 and you split the strategy like that. Yeah. The more and more I'm talking about it, the more excited I am at the whole prospect. It's going to be so good. You've got this whole, you know, drivers taking really early pit stops. But for the likes of Lando
Starting point is 00:15:19 that we're talking about having this two-stop that you have to do, so therefore you're going to be tearing around, you still don't want to give up track position. So at what stage, do you have LeCler just following Lando for the entire race, waiting for Lando to give up track position,
Starting point is 00:15:35 but that never happens? And so you have got this sort of playing chicken sort of scenario. But then you could have Hamilton that's obviously fourth, could take a bit more of a risk unless obviously gets a grid penalty. Yeah, game on, actually. Monaco is the greatest race of all time. I've said, and people laughed at me for this, and it may still age terribly and it doesn't work.
Starting point is 00:15:57 But this create, Monaco's like signature thing that could make it crazy is because it's so hard to overtake. So the novelty needs to be that you can't overtake so there's something, so it has to be done in the pits. So creating more pit stops means that you're just guessing all the time. You look at the races in history where it's come down to the pit stops. That's what's made Monaco exciting where someone's messed up on a pit strategy or something. So yeah, it's going to be very intriguing indeed.
Starting point is 00:16:29 So Holcombberg did very well in Q2, making it up to 13th. Obviously, he had both the Mercedes out. but yeah, let's get a Nika Holcomberg leading the race with 20 laps in. And my God, it'll be a Ghazli Monza situation. It'll be, you know, you don't need overtakes to make it exciting. And if we get someone out of place... On the last lap, when he's P3. I knew you were going to make a P3 podium, Jake.
Starting point is 00:16:53 That's crazy from you. Sonoda was P12 and signs, very surprising to see him out in Q2. I say surprising, to be fair, Albon has looked really quick this weekend. and I think signs even said in practice that he has a good feeling with the car but just needs to look at the data because Albon was still looking really quick in FP3 but yeah a bit of a shock I would say
Starting point is 00:17:14 and disappointing for signs to be out in 11th when Gasly ended up not sorry Gasly Albon ended up P10 which is again I was going to say they're together on track after all that but it was a shock at the time because Albin was third wasn't he Yes Albon went half a second slower in Q3
Starting point is 00:17:32 than he did in Q2, which is surprising. Had he done the same lap in Q2 and Q3, he'd have been up in 6th. So there you go. Right, okay, let's head to Q3, the big one. Where the top 10 were Norris, LeClair, Piastri, Hamilton, Vastappen, Hadjar, Alonzo, Ocon, Lawson and Albon.
Starting point is 00:17:56 First question. Craig Tilly 95. Has Lando got his mojo back? Landos looked great this weekend and I just the whole sort of just the whole weekend is something that puts a monumental
Starting point is 00:18:13 amount of pressure on all of the drivers and I think even more so for Lando it's of course he's clawed a few points back on Piastri but that was a little bit of safety car here or you had Miami where of course he beat Oscar it's only a couple of points swing obviously first to second and swapped but this weekend
Starting point is 00:18:31 just when we haven't predicted him for anything, he's gone and put it on pole, which it really needs to be studied, because I have been backing him for a few weeks in a row, and I've really kind of thought that there was a breakthrough weekend for Lando and it's come for Monaco. He's starting on the front, McLaren still looking very quick indeed, and I've been thoroughly impressed with how Lando has just delivered,
Starting point is 00:18:56 and delivered right at the end as well when he needed to. we've kind of seen the opposite trend to what we've seen throughout the year with McLaren in qualifying, haven't we, where McLaren are normally absolutely mighty Friday, absolutely nail Q1 and Q2, they're so quick. And then when it comes to the final lapse, everyone kind of catches up and it's very close and you get these insanely close gaps. And even when McLaren haven't been on poll, particularly Oscar Piastri, he's normally even sometimes when he's in third he's 0.09 off or something insane.
Starting point is 00:19:33 So the fact that we've kind of seen the opposite this weekend where McLaren just absolutely turned it on in the last part of Q3 and looked so, so good. Piaastri probably left time on the table, I think, anyway, because he definitely could have been challenging for pole. Yeah, and what a lap from Lando, a very interesting strategy from them as well. well. We criticised their strategy a lot this year, but going for those two laps worked absolutely brilliant for them. Yeah, I'm surprised not to have seen perhaps Ferrari going for a similar route, considering that's all we've seen throughout practice. Q1, Q2 was just laps on laps on
Starting point is 00:20:14 laps. And yeah, I did at one point think Charles in for pole, but I'm so glad I noticed that Oscar Piastri had gone fastest in the first sector on his second attempt in Q3. Otherwise, I would have been celebrating something that wasn't going to come true, which was a Shao LeClair pole. But a phenomenal job from Lando, the only driver in the 109s, and yeah, he's got absolutely every chance of winning tomorrow. P1Betra member,
Starting point is 00:20:40 problematically Sam is Matt wearing his Shal wins Monaco tinfoil hat? I'm wearing mine. Absolutely, it's game on. He's on the front row of the grid. If it was a one-stop race, if we didn't have these changeable strategy elements, then I would not really have that tinfoil hat, to be honest with you. I'd be more concerned about maybe losing out to Oscar Piatry.
Starting point is 00:21:02 But anything is possible. Ferrari have looked quick this weekend, obviously, out of nowhere. Can't believe Charles's not taken pole. I thought it was absolutely on until the first set of laps from McLaren in Q3 where I went a 10-1. Oh, God. But clearly the track had ramped up slightly. Charles still put a 10-0 on the board, which is a brilliant, brilliant lap from him.
Starting point is 00:21:29 And again, Ferrari are going to have to be on their A game. Charles can only do so much from the cockpit. This is a Ferrari, and they were great last time out. Ferrari cooked with Charles in Imola before everything went wrong, and he got really unlucky. But this is a Ferrari chess piece that needs to be perfectly moved tomorrow. to win shall the race because they need to find that gap. They need to find that slot that can allow for an undercut to happen or whatever. So I'm putting all my faith in Ferrari, which is a really, really concerning thing to do.
Starting point is 00:22:09 I think the only maybe, I think the whole race relies on what that McLaren pace can be and if they're at the front, because there's always an opportunity with this two-stop for something to happen. But if McLaren do have that unbelievable race pace that maybe we've seen at Miami, it's going to be incredibly difficult for everyone else if Lando does indeed get cleaner at the start and can just check away. So does still feel like his best bet is just getting a better run off the line and going into turn one. but there are so many opportunities because of this new strategy now. There certainly is, yep, lap one, term one, of course, is an opportunity,
Starting point is 00:22:53 but it's such a short run down towards that corner. I strongly believe. With Lando being better, it starts this year as well. I think Lando will have that covered, but we will have to wait and see. We'll be live, of course, with our watch logs. Don't forget that. And we'll be screaming. Well, I will be.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Tommy will be chill because Max is nowhere near the front. Question. Speaking of Max, P.1, Patreon member, MK in LA. Why are Red Bull struggling so much with their setup on street circuits? It's been a track that Red Bull have struggled at in the past, haven't they? And Max did look like he was very much in the hunt for pole. I think he made a mistake on his final lap.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Did not expect him to be seven-tenths off Lando come the end. But P-5 is not a disaster. But it's, again, just very much pointing to, this very unpredictable red bull that can be so quick around the likes of Imola. And then you go to Monaco, it's bumpy, it's difficult. The car needs to be, you know, the ride height needs to be lifted for these cars around here. And Friday they were struggling no end. So for Max to be starting fifth, I'm sure you, Tommy, you're actually like, you know what,
Starting point is 00:24:05 not the worst result in the world. No, definitely not. I was pretty happy with the top five to be honest with how I thought they were going to be. maybe a little bit disappointed during the session because I think after free practice three Max did look like he might be able to challenge for pole and maybe there were kind of questions there that he could potentially do something special but it's not really a Red Bull track this year I know that Max has kind of somehow been able to grab the odd pole particularly
Starting point is 00:24:36 Miami was the biggest shock I think because that wasn't suited to their car but it's it's very much you know the the the the imbales and the Suzuki's are where max will excel in that in that red ball with what they can do bumpy tricky circuits where you need confidence in the car is not not the one for them so i think max would actually be kind of well he wouldn't admit it and i guess max is never happy with with anything other than first and that's just the way he is but um it's a damage limitation weekend i think for for red bull it has to be said because It's always going to be the fact that McLaren's would be quicker than than there. And then, yeah, it's just about how much of a gap there will be to Ferrari, if he can grab some points there to keep his kind of championship hopes alive.
Starting point is 00:25:24 And to be honest, he'll be counting his lucky stars ever so slightly as well, that being seven-tenths off pole puts him P5. Yeah, very true. You've seen much closer qualifying gaps across the year. But thankfully, you know, the likes of McLaren and Ferrari in a weird way were so clear that slotting in 7 tenths behind was a P5. So yeah, quite shocking, though, to see quite the gaps in Q3 come the end. Another question, Jersey pool 90.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Esty Besty is back, baby. Woo! Tommy's good surprise is coming in. Esty Besty, Ocon, P8 in the Hass. His teammate will be starting from last with his penalty. And, yeah, you've cooked here, Tommy. You've absolutely shredded like you do on the guitar, mate. that was a great shout.
Starting point is 00:26:11 But it's not in yet. Anything can happen. And he does need to score points, obviously, to get that good surprise. But he's in a great spot in PA. He was only two hundreds of a second behind starting sixth, with Hadjar and Alonzo just narrowly beating him.
Starting point is 00:26:27 But yeah, this again, with Hass, just roll the dice. Let's see if we're quick this week. And Ocon, you know, he was absolutely buzzing, wasn't he over the team radio? And he's got a great opportunity. He's not going to listen to your strategy, Tommy, because you thought it's going to be a P20 to P1 master class. Yeah, starting eighth now.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Does he still pit early, Tommy, and try and win this one? Probably not. Yeah, it's funny that my good surprise, I thought it'd be quick around here, but it was maybe going, I think the way what we saw it in the practice sessions, Ocon was really poor and didn't look like he had at any pace. He looked slower than Berman,
Starting point is 00:27:05 and just absolutely turned it on in the, well in qualifying in general and you know the final part to be that close to a P6 would have been an absolutely unbelievable result for for Hasse and yeah now they've kind of joked about the hero strategy they can't really do that because now they are in that kind of mix of you do have something to lose the guys in the back have nothing to lose but the people at the front do have something to lose. And track position. You know, everyone's going to be thinking about the kind of Daniel Ricardo
Starting point is 00:27:44 moment where he had a slow stop and he couldn't get back past. Lewis Hamilton kind of lost that race. Nigel Mantle. Loads of, it's happened to loads of people at Monaco. You get stuck. You're screwed. And when you're, you're kind of weirdly, probably more nervous being at the front. Normally you're kind of like, well, Monaco, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:28:04 this you kind of last year you're guaranteeing a point pretty much this year probably not you're going to be kind of very nervous about the people behind you're getting you watch with all of this hype that you've put onto this monaco race tomorrow the top 10 just just remained unchanged come the end I'm sure red flag lap 2 I'm sure with lander obviously being very high up in the top 10 in P1 is going to be concerned about Franco colopinto's early stop onto the hearts I can't wait all the things
Starting point is 00:28:34 same. It's going to be very interesting. Joe Formula 6P asks, was that one of the best qualifying sessions we have seen so far this year? Yes, it's the best qualifying session we've seen, not purely because of the fact that it was close, but I just love the fact we just got action on action, on action. It was nonstop. We had FP3, almost an entire, well, maybe 40 minutes of them just pummeling around this track, Q1, Q2, Q3 as well. It was, it, it, It's more action than probably all of the qualifying sessions we've had up until this point. If you combine the amount of laps they've done. You know, you look at the amount of laps that say, this is qualifying,
Starting point is 00:29:16 and Esteban Ocon did 32 laps. He did almost half a Grand Prix in qualifying. You don't tend to see that. You'll see a few laps in a couple of laps in Q1, maybe one in Q2. This is, obviously you have the in and outlapse as well, but I loved it. Absolutely loved it. It opens up a debate, doesn't it, whether they should have more, kind of...
Starting point is 00:29:35 An hour qualifying. Well, no, no, but just tires available to them so they can put on a show for the fans because don't get me wrong, qualifying has been amazing this year but we do have that kind of
Starting point is 00:29:47 everyone goes out, then they sit in the pit lane for five minutes, then everyone goes out again. And that is the kind of qualifying norm, whereas at Monaco, you can't really afford to do that. And it's ironic that it was such a good qualifying session because in 10 qualifying sessions
Starting point is 00:30:02 that was the second biggest gap to pole position that we've seen all year, which is absolutely crazy. Second biggest gap and it's a tenth. Yeah, exactly. It's only the second time this year in all the qualifying sessions, including sprint qualifying, that it's been over a tenth. Absolute insanity this year in qualifying. And it's been so many different drivers kind of doing it as well.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Just looking at it here is absolute madness. Absolute madness. I've loved every second of it and I can't wait for tomorrow as well. I think that we need to tell you that we'll be live. Watchalongs. Of course we will.

If you're afraid that we will be ahead of you or whatever, you can pause on YouTube. All that good stuff. Tommy, what would be your final thoughts, please?
Starting point is 00:31:06 My final thoughts are, I feel more nervous right now than a front runner and the worry of a two-stop behind me because I have hyped this up so much and now it's come to the crunch and we're ending the qualifying podcast. The only thing going around in my head is, oh my God, please be good. Please be good and actually work because I've hyped this up to the hills. I can already see there's at least 10 comments that say, calm down, Tommy. And I can see it in my mind's eye right now. And probably more now that I've said that. So there you go, chat.
