Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 podcast.
Today we have part two, the final part of myself and Daniel Ricardo in America doing a mini road trip.
Very surreal.
I hope you enjoyed part one.
It's literally the previous episode if you haven't seen it.
And yeah, this is the second half.
So enjoy.
When's the Danny Rick podcast coming out?
Can we expect something like that?
because surely you know when you're on your road trips have a little 20 minute debrief people would love to hear your unfiltered thoughts surely
so i i definitely went through a let's say pretty serious phase of we spoke to some people about doing one and
starting and so we had some we did have some conversations but i think the more that we started getting a little
bit deeper into it the more I was then maybe pulling back in terms of it I guess it's the path
that you're taking then isn't it and you go oh you know is this going to steer away from maybe what
I really want yeah exactly and then you're naturally you know if you're talking for an hour a week
or something that's an hour more where you're and obviously I want to talk pretty openly and
honestly like yeah I'm probably gonna maybe get myself in trouble or like it was just it wasn't even
that but I was just like look do I need do I need this extra thing yeah in my life right now or my
plate and the answer was no and it was and it was it was really as simple as that I was just like
look this is this is something that's going to probably consume me a little bit more and then
but never saying never but no like never say never but I was definitely more into it let's say
two years ago than where I currently am.
I love podcasts, like I love listening to him and like being on some, but
the P1 podcast, having my own.
What'd you say the P1 podcast?
Tune every,
P1.
P1.
P1.
P1.
Is that a, P1 with Matt and Tommy?
Hohan.
Is that a place in, is that a city in China or something?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah, that's exactly.
No, I'm definitely a podcast listener, but yeah, like I just, I'm trying to like,
take things off my plate right now, especially in like the second phase of my career.
And I just feel like it's, I just feel better.
And like, yeah, you go through moments of wanting to do more and now I'm kind of in that one where I want to do more by doing less.
And I think the way the calendar is, I just want to be all in on the racing.
And then when I'm not racing, I want to have like Daniel time.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Be on your dirt bike.
Because it's also, I mean, you'd know, like, podcasting, like you're on, you know, like it's fun and you're chatting and just shooting the breeze, but you're still on and it still is quite consuming and whatever.
So I just, for now, I just would rather probably put my energy on a sofa.
And that's fair.
It's not like, I mean, me and Tommy literally do the podcast for our living.
It's not like we have a side Formula One seat that we also, you know, commit our lives to.
You've got a pretty big role doing that, which is, you know, you say about the second phase of your career and stuff, like, is the fire burning as brightly, if not more brightly now that you're kind of back and, you know, you're snug in and you're ready to go again.
Yeah, it is.
It really is.
And, you know, even like a weekend, like Mexico, everything about that weekend felt like everything you just described.
you know, the buildup after Austin,
all I wanted to do was jump back in the car.
I was just so, yeah, hungry again and wanted it again.
And I also believed again, like I was like, man,
I know I can do this and it had been a while
since I truly like felt that.
And even, you know, after qualifying, you know, like, yeah,
I was, I had like kind of those butterflies
and that kind of like the good nerves.
That's awesome.
Even like I went to bed.
that night like thinking about the race and and I was like no come on like just get some
sleep like just chill so so yeah like it I was very aware that it like really meant
something to me again and that was that was a good that's so nice yeah that's awesome that's
when you know it's it's right for you at that at this time and yeah it's like yeah I feel
everything I I guess I've been looking for what is your um what is your um what is your um what is your um
weird side question to that what is your bedtime routine how do you get to sleep are you kind of like a
light soft cheers or i love um so i love noise i i i i hate light but i love noise so the room has to be
really dark but i'll put on um yeah i'll put on a podcast or like i love UFC so i might like put on
a press conference or like a UFC podcast or like MMA podcast.
So I'll like, I'll fall asleep to noise and normally like talking as opposed to music.
Yep.
And will you then wake up to turn it off or?
It'll, it might, it'll probably be finished by the time I wake or I'll put like the sleep timer on it.
Yeah.
But, um.
Oh, you just want to be whispered sweet nothings.
Yeah.
By a UFC podcast.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, he smashed him in the face.
Oh, I'm so relaxed.
I'm also a bit of a sicko.
Like, I like the true crime stuff as well.
Oh, they're so good.
I might fall asleep to some dark stuff as well.
But I don't know what it is.
I think I enjoy, because even like, say, on a race weekend, you know, like you can't help.
But yeah, like, say whatever, after qualifying, you know where you're going to start Sunday.
So it's easy to start thinking about the start in your head.
All right, well, I've got this guy in front of me, this guy.
So, all right, at the start, I'm probably going to go to the inside.
So it's easy to, like, start maybe keeping yourself up.
So, like, you know, listening to someone else talk from another walk of life is like a kind of positive distraction for me.
So I totally get that.
Yeah, I totally get that.
It's refreshing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Just kind of helps me switch off.
Yeah.
When you're, when something just takes over your life, even, you know, in a small way, helping me and Tommy, you know, we're always talking about Formula One.
I want to talk about anything other than Formula One
when I'm away from it.
So I totally get that.
Actually, something come to mind
that I wanted to tell you that was very exciting
for me personally, and I think that you won't care
at all, but now, I'm joking, you might.
I drove a Formula E car.
A couple of weeks ago, the Gen 3.
Is the Gen 3 the new one?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the fast one.
What's it like?
The only reason I said that, because I was like,
oh, yeah, I did that.
Like just sitting in the cockpit.
And you've done any, no, you've done some formula supper.
Have you done a Formula 4?
I've done F1.
Huh?
You must know that I've driven an F1 car.
Wait, who's car and when?
It was 2017, Silverstone.
I drove the, where it would have been a Lotus, but it was branded Renault.
All right, well, then I totally forgot.
That's fine.
That was old.
time ago. I mean, you said that four, you're like, you know, Matt's not, that's not ready for anything
other than that. Hey, oh, shit, all right. It was a very brief encounter. It was literally like,
was two laps of the small silver state circuit, but I mean, that was two laps for me. That's
such a tease. Literally. I mean, that was enough. What's the, um, so then was the formulae more
enjoyable? Like, did you get a bit more of a crack at it? It was actually, so it was in,
at the chest circuit in Valencia. I don't know if you know it's motor GP, um, circuit. Which
called Chester, Chester, C-H-E-T-E-E-S-T-E circuit.
Not the Valencia.
No, no, no, no, no.
It's like a Moto-G-P circuit.
Wait, but no, MotoG-P, where they race?
Like the last round.
Yeah. What's it called?
Like circuit, Ricardo-Torlo?
Yeah, sorry, yeah.
Oh, yeah, mate, that's circuit.
Yeah, it's really cool.
Unfortunately, they have the safety car in front of us.
It's both me and Tommy got two laps, or three laps, sorry, which was really cool.
But, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm just too fair.
Did it feel fast?
Plets any more than that.
Yeah, it felt really fast.
The instant torque was, was mega.
And the brakes as well, just, yeah, you just, you kind of, you immediately get that.
What brakes do they have?
I don't know, I do.
Carbon specke.
Yeah, they were, they were, they were sourcing.
But the F1 car was, you know, obviously the thing that I've been dreaming of since I was three years old.
But yeah, I mean, I actually cry in the video as well.
I'd call my mum.
The F1 one?
Yeah.
All right.
I need to rewatch this.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm sorry.
No, don't apologize.
It's all good.
You're a busy man.
But it was a 2017 car or you did a 2012.
It was Kimmy Rikkonen's.
Oh, yeah.
You said Lotus.
Yeah, yeah, so it would have been Lotus brand as Redo.
Ah, so Simon Rennie was engineering him.
So my Red Bull engineer was, because that's the race where Kimmy was like,
I know what I'm doing or something.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so it was Simon that was giving him like the messages and he basically told
I'm going to shut up.
So that's funny.
Oh, we love Kimmy.
We do.
We really do.
But yeah.
So that was pretty cool.
And it just gives you that immediate sense of respect.
Like your head's been coming off just through corners and you're going about 60 miles an hour.
Yeah.
How was, did you feel like the G's?
A little bit.
Nothing, nothing crazy.
Yeah.
Because obviously you're not going to push a price of the scar.
Yeah.
When you'd maybe not have the talent to back in that.
So yeah.
But yeah, that was, that was mega.
and yeah what maybe one day i'll get back in an f1 car because they do do like f1 car track days and
stuff and i've sent the odd email like hey can we do a video and we go around magnicor or something
that'll be uh mate well the team the team want me to do like a filming day in january which
yeah i don't know if you want to take it for me yeah all right yeah yeah no worries no
No worries, you know, let me know the time of the day.
Yeah, it'll be in Italy somewhere.
Yeah, yeah.
Get yourself a good plate of pasta and rip your neck off.
Happy days.
Have a go.
You can just chill out.
Listen to your true, true crime podcast.
Oh, how good.
I only started listening to them recently.
I can't remember what the series was, but they are gripping.
They're quite addictive.
They are, aren't they, in a weird way?
I try not to tell too many people because they think I've got issues.
No, but they're so successful.
though, aren't they? There's loads of people that don't say anything about it because they're like,
oh, I can quite enjoy the true crime.
People get worried when I tell them I fall asleep to them. They're like, wait, that suits you?
That's another level. Because then surely your dreams are a little bit weird as well, though.
For me, I'm like, just, I just want to sleep. Like, sleep is important, especially with our calendar,
and it's just like, if you can just bank sleep, bank it. So I get to a point, I'm like,
if I get bad dreams, it, like, as long as you have to.
Give me the hours. Yeah, I'll wake up and I'll realize it was not real, so that's all that's important.
How many hours do you sleep? You sleep?
Well, I'd say, like, my average is maybe seven.
Seven, okay.
But I'm, yeah, I'm okay.
It's just being on the road is hard to get that consistency.
Like, so I'm naturally not someone that can just be like, yeah, I can get eight hours.
Like, it's, I think I need a little bit of, like, consistency.
Okay.
And probably like stability in terms of a location and an environment.
Those are travelling and the jet lag and...
Yeah, that's what gets me.
You hear about other drivers as well and how they have their rooms set up a particular way,
you know, blackout blinds, this, that and the other to ensure that they sleep well?
Do you have your own little list of like, right, so I need true crime to be playing as I walk in.
I need to have no lights but some kind of audio.
I definitely need it dark and oh, in and out.
Let's go get a burger.
Oh, good...
I've not had one, but the amount of people have been like, yeah, he's getting in and out.
Look, it's a little overhyped, I won't lie.
Is it?
it's still good.
Where would be the place that you would recommend,
especially if we're going to Vegas?
I talk to me where should I be getting in and out.
As far as like on the road, it's your best option.
Like, because it's the best fast food you're going to get on the road.
For Vegas.
Vegas, Vegas.
I mean, I was here earlier this year for my buddy's Bachelor Party.
And we had, but I think it's just because we were really drunk and just laughing the whole night.
The Bachelor Party in Vegas.
Wow.
But we had a funny.
right there it was it was no we were okay yeah but we had a good meal at uh carbones which is like a
nice italian um but that was like our most memorable one just because we were all just
pissing ourselves the whole night yeah um but that's that's nice oh yeah what else um what are we
talking about i don't know what we were talking about yeah i'm pretty hungry places to go
Vegas true oh setting up my bedroom yeah whatever i'll like i'll bring an eye mask around in
like the blinds aren't very good so I'll sleep with an eye mask but I'm pretty
chill I also I'm I own I sleep like especially some hotels we go obviously
quite nice and you know it'll be like a huge bed but I sleep on like the very
end of the bed I don't have like a side preference but what you're literally
just hanging off five sixth of the bed is unmade I'm like just in a little slither
on the end I don't know and I haven't always
done it, but the last few years, that's just how I sleep and it's wonderful.
I don't know if I like maybe hanging my arm off the bed or something, but I just sleep right
on the edge.
If I just don't really move, I just, I'm right there.
If I listen to true crime before I go to bed, the last thing I'm doing is having any of my
body parts hanging off the bed.
You want to be in the middle.
Just tucked in, locked in.
The one thing I think, if I was to travel around and, you know, had a team to sort out
a room for me, the one thing I'd say is a consistent pillow.
Yes.
that really does me in is the pillow variations around the world.
And are you, are you, do you want a soft pillow?
Do you want a high foam?
A good firm memory foam.
That's, okay.
That's me all over.
What are you going for?
This is what you're like, I'm hanging off the bed with no pillow.
Yeah, pretty much.
It's changed over time, but yeah, I'm, I'm the same.
I want like something pretty soft, so I don't, I don't, and I'm like, I'm sleeping with
half my head just on it and then half on the off, off.
So I'm like sleeping on the end of the pillow and it's quite soft.
So I'm not really using much, not using much pillow.
You've got a pillow right here with your neck.
So you don't really need one.
Exactly.
Yeah.
That's living.
That really is.
Oh, the street's called Rainbow.
Is it?
Yep.
And that one's called Rancho.
I actually thought you knew the street.
Rainbow Rancho.
There's a, there's a, there's a sign for it.
Oh, bingo.
We went to a on the way here yesterday because we drove from LA and we stopped to get some
breakfast in a town called I think it was called Rancho Cucamonga or something and I was just
like I wish I lived in Rancho Cucamonga just sounds so cool just writing it down yeah like
where you're from you know a little place called Rancho Cucamonga there's going to be someone
watching this to go I live there yeah yeah it was funny a guy came up to me in the breakfast spot
and he's like man I wouldn't I wouldn't expect you to see you in my hometown of Rancho Cucamonga
He said it.
And I was like, oh, I love you.
Oh, that's amazing.
It's so funny.
We should get a place just so that you can say that, just when you're in the area.
I might name my farm in Australia, rancho, kooka-mong-o.
Do it.
You got to name your farm somewhere.
Or your ranch.
Yeah.
That actually works as well, though.
It's beautiful.
I also love how there's just American flags everywhere.
Everywhere.
Everywhere.
They're very proud.
Yeah.
I love coming to America.
I think it's just such a, such a unique place.
It is like.
the world for them isn't it like this is this is your seat hold I just
realise your seat's on no that's lovely that's nice yeah I just piss myself
actually but yeah Rancho Cucamonga there you go then what a time you have to
name that now you have to get a plaque or something good yeah I think that's
what it was called yeah this is when it's completely wrong yeah someone's like
are you sure who where are we going I don't know to the fuel stations
he's baited you trying to send you down there trying to just get me involved in some road rage
do you have road rage i'm better now i'm better you're better now since when no i i went through
like probably my younger phase of not having much patience on the road i've never really been
once like speed like i'm not someone that's just hooning around everywhere but i think i'm just i get more
frustrated. It's more if someone's like sitting in the overtaking lane,
yeah,
overtaken. The worst thing is. So just like the simple road rules that a lot of
people actually don't seem to get. What is it like that like it's just,
it just bugs me. Oh, they're all. Look, I'm better now, but I would definitely
get up close to them and tailgate and road rage rehab. Yeah. Yeah. That's so good. But no,
I'm okay. I'm okay. Um, gosh. It's, uh, it's, it's, it's,
fine. I'm good.
All right.
We're pulling up at Exxon.
We're going to fuel this bad boy up.
And continue on the road.
And that concludes the chat with Daniel Ricardo.
It ended quite abruptly because I thought we might have got a little bit more time,
but we stopped at a petrol station and everything changed.
And, you know, it's literally Daniel Ricardo.
So we were very, very lucky to get the amount of time that we did.
But I hope you've enjoyed.
I thought I'd do a little outro to say that,
It was amazing.
I want to spend more time with Daniel Ricardo in a car because he is great fun.
And yeah, have a lovely Christmas because I know this is coming out just before Christmas.
And we'll see you very soon.
Lots of love.
