everybody, hello everybody. Welcome, welcome to 10 Things I Hate About You, but not 10 Things I Hate About You, M.J.
It's not about me, good. It's 10 Things I Hate About You, the podcast. No, it's page 7 watching 10 Things I hate about you.
Yes. For the first time since I want to say I have not seen this movie since, I feel like I watched it like in memoriam when Heath Ledger died. And I don't know if I've seen it since, honestly. Obviously, before that. Because you know he died a while ago.
Quite a while. I remember where I was when I heard he died and it was in...
He was your JFK.
He was my JFK.
I was in the car driving home from my senior year internship in college in St. Paul, Minnesota.
So I can situate exactly where I was.
But the thing about it is, yes, it might be 20 years since I've seen the movie.
But before that, like in high school, how many times did I see this movie?
Gotta be 15, right?
I mean, I watched it all the time.
Heath, I really was Heath Ledger, Julie.
of Stiles in this movie. Honestly,
all of them. All of them. Bernard is
there. Yeah, Bernard is there.
Joseph Gordon Levitt's
there. He's there. And maybe it's just because I recently
was like a Nolinator, you know?
So I was, I'm like, oh, remember when
Joseph Gordon Levitt was in everything? Right. I was having one of those
where I was like, man, he was in everything for a while and then he just kind of
fell off, I think. Or maybe he's out there making shows.
I don't know. He's in the blind.
but not for sex.
We'll talk about it.
Put a pin in it.
What?
What does that mean, MJ?
We don't have time.
We don't have time to talk about it.
Okay.
We'll start the movie.
All I, so MJ, you weren't, this was when you were, I believe, thick with newborn.
We did a pop history on 10 things I hate about you.
Oh, yeah.
No, I don't know about that.
We did a rewatch then, but it was great because we also really got into talking about
you know, the taming of the shrew
and talking about where it comes from,
especially after clue list.
So we've got lots to talk about today.
We're going to get this started.
Now, for those that are listening to the audio podcast,
I will do a three, two, one start.
And you can start if you'd like to watch this at home.
It is streaming on Disney Plus.
Yes, it is evil, but it is streaming on there.
Right.
We also will be putting out the full watchalong on video.
on video over on the Patreon.
So check it out, patreon.com slash page 7 podcast.
If you would like to not give them the stream today,
if you don't want to do it today,
come on over and watch us play it for you.
Right, right.
So the watch along won't be on YouTube, of course,
but it will be over on Patreon if you want to watch with us.
Otherwise, listen to us.
Go down memory lane in your car
or wait until you get home and go down memory lane with us
because it's, you know, it's obviously a great text.
I can't wait to revisit it with 2026, 40-year-old eyes.
Yes.
Oh, and we're squinting.
We can barely see the screen from here.
Am I wearing my very thick glasses?
Because it's how nice.
Yes, I am.
Because it's night, time.
I put my glasses on.
It's night.
Can't see the screen at not, Tom.
All right, guys.
So we're getting, so get a hovering, okay?
Because we're going to do three, two, one.
We're to start at the beginning of me saying the word start.
Are you ready?
Ready.
Three, two, one, start.
All right.
Out the gate with the soundtrack, y'all.
The soundtracks of the movies of our teenhood were just, they were so good.
God, so good.
Just so good.
And especially this is, again, we were talking coming on the heels of Clueless,
which is also a Shakespearean remake.
And Clueless is probably my favorite movie of all time.
I don't know, man, 10 things.
That's Brian.
I mean, it.
Out the gate, MJ.
Come back together, come back to see me.
I mean, this is such a 90s opening.
I can't even breathe.
I know.
I'm realizing I don't know exactly what year it came out.
I'm Googling it right now because I forgot.
We're right in the millennia, the switch.
10 things like.
1999.
Wow.
1999
David Cromholt
Where my burninators at
Burninators burn
I'm not talking about Bernie Sanders
Bernard is the elf for us
Bernard is the elf for us
Oh my God
She's not like the other girls
I want to kiss her
Wanna kiss her want to be her
Wanna kiss her want to be her
She's the original not like the other girls
And I know that there was a whole
80s teen movie
I think that she got as well
that probably
Molly Ringwald
You know
Ali Sheedy
Ali Shee is the original
Not like the other girls
Right
Yes
Because Molly Ringwold was like the other girls
But Ali Sheet is not like the other girls
But except internally
She wasn't MJ
Yes it's true
If you were watching for Molly
Okay
Thinking about this
Talking the Ringwald
Think about this today
I was also thinking about
watch, rewatching, say anything.
You forgot about
CJ in this movie.
Definitely.
Yeah, man, Joseph.
Allison Janie, her name is Allison Janie,
of course.
Oh, yes.
She's writing.
As she's writing smart, dude, this is like the OG.
OG smut.
For me.
Smut on a work computer.
That is going to get you fired in 2026.
But when you're wearing a skirt suit like that,
I don't think you can do whatever you want.
And here's the thing.
In 1999, it's just not going to get you fired.
I mean, I think that might get you fired.
Flip it off the kids.
I don't know.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also kind of not like the other boys in a fun way.
Oh, yeah, for sure.
Except like he was like, like, oh, there he is.
Patrick Verona.
Patrick Verona.
Well, it's also a gig because he's Petrucchio and,
Heath Ledger in this
Perfect
I think he might be my top
Heath Ledger want to kiss him
movie?
I think like by far
Oh yeah
This is my favorite Heath Ledger movie as well
I mean broke back round
I mean but the look of him in this
Oh yeah for sure
Again we're going to just say this up top
We are saying this as if we are teenagers
Because we were teenagers
When we watch this over and over again
and we just want to remind you guys.
Yes, yes.
The crushes I have here are from the perspective of a 14-year-old.
Bernard, Bernard, Bernard.
Bernard is here, Bernard.
You're not supposed to want to kiss Bernard.
But you are not like the other girls.
MJ, ding, ding, ding.
And see, this was something that I missed my first watch, Bernard,
because I wasn't a Santa Clausinator when I first saw this movie.
I'm sorry for you.
In 1999.
Which is also, this is very clueless, right?
But also, this is very Shakespeare of introducing everything.
So it's like, this is not just a cribben from Clueless.
It is.
Cribbon from Shakespeare.
Yeah, it really, it's so cool.
I mean, what Clueless did is so cool.
And then it's so cool that a few years later, they were like,
let's just do it again.
With a different one.
Different story, different cast.
and it's also they totally stick the landing.
That I buy my eyes odds at an outlet mall.
Okay, but Bernard looks like he is 35, Jackie.
I, okay, I, to be clear, I wanted to kiss Bernard.
Okay, I didn't want to kiss David Crummels in this.
Because I was far too concerned with Heath Ledger
if I was going to kiss a boy in this movie.
Yeah.
I also wanted to kiss Joseph Gordon Levitt, but guys, I remember.
I was, I think, 13 when this movie came out.
So I'm not a pervert.
But also, Bianca, too, was...
Yep.
I know this, I have to stop myself from Googling for this whole thing.
Be like, oh, I know her.
And whatever happened to her?
That's how you know the thick, how thick your glasses are, MJ.
And what about her?
And of course, he,
immediately falls in love with her.
Because that girl who Joseph Gordon Levitt likes,
I forgot about her, like, as an actress.
Oh, yeah, dude.
But she,
she's been in stuff.
Okay, good.
Whoa.
Whoa, call out misogyny, bitch.
And you know what?
She's not wrong about Hemingway.
Oh, yeah, Andrew Scott.
Is that his name?
Oh, man.
Turn into a weird cult guy.
Pipe down, Jocchi.
Pipe down Jocci.
is a very funny thing to say to him.
What about Sylvia Plath?
Yeah, you're not reading any women?
Of course you're not.
It's 1999 English class.
Oh my God, he's so hot.
He is so hot.
The hair, dude.
Didn't we talk a lot on the show about how Andrew Scott became a cult guy?
Yes.
Another really good line.
Calling out white feminism, right out the game.
this it's
this movie is a good movie
MJ this is not one of the
see this I mean
don't even get me started on you too
the white rasta boys
yeah that really
I'm sure that that went right over my head in 1999
and him being like you're a white
feminist and you've got a fine point but also
what about all the black offers so yes
but what about a lot of other people
that have also been oppressed
Alison J. I think
I think that this may be where one of my beginnings of wanting, like knowing that this kind of stuff was written.
I think this was.
And like thinking I could do it.
And this, I'm sure that I saw Alison Janion movies before this, but I think this is the movie that I was like, she's, she's my gal.
I love her.
What is she?
Me?
My problem is I say throbbing too many times.
So I get you.
Yeah, you need a Judith.
I'll be your Judith.
Please.
I wear a camo tank top.
I love, man, between Buffy and this, seeing this, these kind of guidance counselors shine, you know?
These kind of guidance counselors and also these kind of badass, you know, admittedly hot, thin, blonde women, but still very empowering.
in the lane they're in.
Hanous bitch.
Yeah.
Back when counselors could be counselors.
Yeah, we could call children, bitches and not get fired.
Sometimes the kids being a bitch.
Yeah, quivering member.
And it's great because it's like she is right.
Like Julia Stiles' character is right and also she's a bitch, you know?
Right.
That was really nice for me as a kid who,
who was sometimes also right about being bitchy,
but also I was being a bitch, you know?
But sometimes if you're being a bitch,
people aren't going to listen to you.
Yeah, sometimes you've got to figure out another way.
Oh, and he's trying to take her V.
Yeah.
See, this is the thing.
I don't want to be with David Crumholz,
but I love that he gives it to him straight.
Everyone loves the guy, the town crier that knows everybody, you know?
The David Crumholt's character is great.
It's just shocking how, like, how much of a 30,
how much of a 35-year-old man he is.
I think he's just one of those guys
that has looked 40 since he's been 13.
Yeah, I think you're right.
I mean, remember Adams family too?
Yes.
Yes, I do, because I watched it with you.
Because you watched it with me, MJ,
and you remember him in it.
And let's see, so 1999, I would have been like a,
eighth or ninth grader.
So the exact perfect age.
I was 12, dude, and I was just like,
even better than being at high school.
Because in high school, you're like,
this is not really what it's like,
but in middle school you're like,
this is what high school must be like.
What it's going to be like.
Ew.
Great Cosmo reference.
Also, I was just going to say,
Julia Stiles' looks hold up.
Yes.
Can you ever just be whelmed?
Ew.
What are you,
Xander?
Andrew Keegan.
I kept calling him Andrew Scott.
Andrew Keegan.
I was like, I know Andrew Scott's not right.
Andrew Keegan.
Andrew Scott, not a cult band as far as we know.
No.
But Andrew Keegan, yes.
Very much a cult man.
Oh, gee.
The Shrew.
You get it?
The Shrew.
MJ?
Yes, they're sisters.
I forgot their sisters.
The sisters.
And then, you know, a 90s movie has to have a zanies.
action scene. Totally.
Just so that you guys know that we know that you guys know that it's a comedy.
Let's put the Shakespeare to the side for a second, you know.
It's a real moment for him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's amazing what'll come back to you after 20 years.
I'm like, oh, yeah.
It's all coming back.
And then look at this neighborhood.
I just want to live.
Of course I want to live in the Pacific Northwest.
Look at this.
Yeah.
God.
I believe it was all shot in Washington State.
Oh, yeah.
Which, I mean, look at, yeah.
This house, God.
Late 90s pop-buck.
Chick music, angry chick music.
It's a girl band.
She's reading the bell jar.
She's reading the bell jar.
Because there's one thing that smart girls do
when it's read the bell jar.
And we know what Sylvia Plath did to herself.
head in the oven.
And of course, Sarah Lawrence.
Of course.
Yay, you're going to Sarah Lawrence.
Man, this poor beleaguered
father of two girls, you know?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I know.
I'm not, I can't, don't worry,
I won't be watching this
from the point of view of a parent
of two of sisters
because I'm not.
I'm not because I'm going to be in my,
I'm reverted to my 14 year old self,
okay?
My 14 year old self doesn't have to.
girls. Okay, okay, you don't have to worry about that.
Especially because he's an OBGYN. I forgot about this.
Whoa.
I should listen to my father.
Oh no.
And of course, the brilliant idea.
Good one, Julia Stiles.
And she knew it wasn't, but like you gotta just go with the flow sometimes.
You know, you're like, but it's what I said.
Yeah, commit to it.
I also love, she's like, Julia Stiles is so hot,
but because she's smart at all, they're like, she's ugly.
Oh, she's, but then that's also her cool confidence that she's so hot, you know?
Yes.
That, like, that she, at the end of the day, I think this is why these movies
always used to upset me, because I'm like, she's not even ugly.
That's the thing.
Like, I think that even this girl reading the bell jar would still be considered
very hot to have all of the boys in this movie, right?
And we were supposed to be like, oh, you're an outcast girl, just like Julia
Stiles.
And I was like not like her.
No, not like her.
I don't look like her.
And like he had the whole third rock from the sun thing that just had my heart cornered.
So third rock from the sun was for some reason, I missed it.
I know, I obviously remember seeing the commercials and stuff like because I watched a lot
of must see TV, but I did not watch
Third Rock from the Sun. So all of that,
John Lithgow and him and everybody missed it.
Wow. You loved it though, right? It was like a
really good show. Yeah. I think you would love it if you watched it now, too.
You like sailing? Lester. Lester making
his debut on the big show. Lester's making, he is here
and he is starving.
Lester the cat reporting for duty. Miam,
I also like Shakespeare.
Yum,
yo.
Oh my God.
Also, that like,
that exact boy haircut
with the part down the center
with the like puff,
like it was like the rider strong.
This haircut existed for like five years
and five years only.
Yes, and then it went away.
I remember my brother had long hair
at the same time Joseph Gordon Levitt had long hair
and at that time people were really confused
by a boy having long hair.
And then he,
cut it and it was like this also like when Joseph Gordon Levitt. It was like this haircut.
It was like there. There was like an evolution of like not like the other boys.
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I've got a ponytail. Now I've got this Joseph Gordon Levitt haircut.
Yes. Just a little bit of an offbeat boy. Exactly. And a lot of them played hacky sack or they
wanted to. Right. Right. Or they became friends via hacky sack, which is how my brother met one of his
best friends in college. He told you.
he met him via sack.
Via sack, yeah.
I love that they're acting like that.
She's so hot.
You're just intimidated by how hot she is.
She's just so classically hot.
She's not even hot.
And you know who else is?
All the way.
Oh, Keith Ledger, he's a bad boy.
I'm going to stop Googling too much,
but I wonder how old he is.
Google away, dude.
Man, I would have killed
to have those kind of rumors spread about me.
And I feel like my high school never had anybody like the Heath Ledger character.
And that was one of those where I was like, I've been lied to.
Oh, yeah.
No, I mean, I was in a smart person program.
There was no one that looked like that in our program.
They didn't look like him in our school.
Yeah.
No, there was no heats.
He was born in 79.
So in 99.
He was only 20?
My God, he was so young.
Whoa, also though, Julia Stiles was up against
Eliza Dushku.
Could you imagine?
They are in the same category of perfection.
My Holy Trinity is Julia Stiles, Elijah Dushku,
and Sarah Michelle Geller.
I remembered, I just pulled up this quote
because when we did pop history,
that when they first met Heath Ledger,
and he came in and did the audition,
he kept saying that he was looking for a man
that was masculine,
without trying to be masculine,
that he needed to be smart,
he needed to be removed,
but he said,
the instant the door closed,
I turned to the women in the room and said,
ladies, I've never wanted to sleep with a man,
but if I had to sleep with a man,
that would be the man.
Cast him immediately.
And I think that's very, very funny.
That is very funny.
Cast him immediately.
Was this Heath Ledger's breakup role, right?
In America.
In America, okay.
Also, I had never thought of putting, I just really, like, broke my brain of thinking
of putting the dick tip on the corner of your mouth so it looks like the dick is talking.
Uh-huh.
Like, it really is a nice touch.
you know.
I also like that Andrew Kagan was like,
I play one character in everything.
And it's asshole.
Yeah.
I'm basically the same guy in every movie.
Yeah, and then he started a cult so he could do that guy forever.
Yeah.
And then he was like, please have sympathy for me and all of us.
We're like, we don't trust you because of who you were in 10 things I hate about you.
We know also you're probably broken, but also broken in the way that breaks other people.
So, I mean, we're not going to talk about all the.
Jared Leto news that's coming out today.
Yeah.
Oh, David Krumholtz.
Yeah, David Krumholtz.
I mean, MJ.
No, I know.
He's a sweetie.
He's a sweetie.
He's a sweet 35-year-old high schooler.
Not the golf club.
God help us.
Man, can you imagine what the football team would do to the golf club if they were
hitting their balls into the field?
Oh my God.
He was smoking cigarettes.
And we're not supposed to love that.
He was only 20.
I would have assumed he was,
it was like a 902.10 situation
where he was like 30, you know.
Ew.
And also, I like that,
I don't think that that guy
comes back for the rest of the movie,
but like,
what about that guy, you know?
Yeah,
why didn't they get Matthew Lillard
to be the punk?
Yeah, that punk also looks 35, like at least.
Yes, he looks, he's a Kinniki.
He is a Kinnikki.
I'm already remembering how upset
she is when she finds out he was paying.
God, this movies really shaped us, didn't they, Jackie?
They really shaped my psyche about what romance is.
The poetry scene.
I mean, that's the whole scene.
I don't hate you a little bit.
I don't, not even a little bit.
Not even at all.
Also, apparently, the writing team that did this,
this did all come because she was looking back through her journals
from when she was a teenager,
and she had a list of things I hate about Anthony,
and she thought that was so funny that they were like,
we got to do something with that.
Really?
Yeah.
That's cute.
Yeah, I mean, I think what strikes me is just how much the conditioning was like,
the best boy won't really like you.
Like, if it's like, the best case scenario is that he doesn't really like you
and then you have to like make him like you by being unavailable.
I don't know, whatever he wants you to be.
It's an interesting, a lot of feelings coming up.
Screw boy.
Oh my God, she's a challenge.
She's a smart lady.
And it's like I know.
Again, Joseph Gordon Levitt, you don't even know that much about Bianca.
Yeah, Bianca is, you know, I'm asleep as far as I'm concerned.
We have not learned anything interesting about Bianca at all.
except that she's a virgin
And she's like
100% doing a share from clueless impression
Which is fine
Also yes I did forget about this
That like do you have to look up
Some of the pictures of them hanging out on set
They all became amazing friends
This was like one of those like together like shooting over a summer
And they were all young and they were all hot celebrities
And they all just like had a black like
There's all these pictures of them just like
like partying and drinking every night and like showing up hungover like at every set but like always
at a great mood.
Aw.
I love that.
Yeah.
It's just and I know that it's like it's a movie.
It's never going to just be like you fall in love and it's simple.
But I feel like every movie we got was like the hot boy actually hates you.
Like that sounds like she's all that.
This.
Except at least it is saying at the end of the day he'll like you for you no matter.
how ugly you are.
Via the process of hating you for how ugly and smart you are.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Julia's...
Oh my god, and the car too.
Like, I melt MJ with the car.
Cool, cool girl car.
All beat up.
That she probably worked on, you know.
Baby, baby, baby, baby.
Smash that car, Julie.
Mash that car, Julia Stiles.
Yes.
To Wanda.
Yes.
But don't worry, guys, they're all rich.
See, at least, like, at the end of the day, too, there is that.
With a lot of these movies where it's like, they are all rich.
Well, except for Save the Last Dance.
I know now I kind of want to watch Save the Last Dance.
Man, Save the Last Dance is rough.
Really?
If I remember correctly, it's rough.
I would rewatch Save the Last Dance.
I would rewatch center stage.
I would rewatch the entire step-up franchise.
Center stage, you stop.
We'll stop the movie right now and watch center stage.
But this is, that's the...
Yeah.
Whoa.
See, this is a lot of these movies are what, like, really connected.
Natalie and I at the beginning of our friendship
because she still watches all of these movies all the time.
Yeah.
And I love that for her.
But then I would just, like, when we live together,
we were just randomly, like, Center Stage, we watched a lot.
Yeah, I'll bet. I'm sure she loves Center Stage.
She loves Center Stage.
And Romeo and Michelle's High School Reunion, that's the one that we've also watched
a million times together.
Romeo and Michelle's High School Reunion is great.
And yeah, I was thinking about when Gideon and I went and saw John Cusack and say anything
and how good a lot of those movies are.
Obviously, a lot of the 80s movies didn't hold up for the sexual politics, but some of them
totally still hold up, say anything being one of them.
Oh.
In fact, it even made me think of some kind of wonderful.
That's when I was thinking of.
Talk about not like the other girls where Mary Stuart Masterson was like working on motorcycles.
And like she liked the preppy guy, but like he was never going to like her.
Because she works on motorcycles.
Yeah.
And I'm just like, she works on motorcycles.
I really, some kind of wonderful had a grip on me.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
but then he's dangerous.
I really, these movies also made me think I wanted someone dangerous when in real life,
I don't want anybody dangerous.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, you're like, I have to have the baddest boy in school.
And you're like, actually, I don't.
No.
What would I do with them?
No, I knew even, I knew in 1999 I wanted Joseph Gordon Levitt, not Heath.
Ultimate, like realistically, you know.
Oh, no, I was lying to myself.
This was around the time period, though.
that like I started thinking towards like, oh, I'm sure soon I'll be groomed by some older man,
which I was inevitably.
But, you know, I don't think it was quite as apparent at the time, you know?
Yeah, that's the thing.
It's like these movies take me back to a time when I was completely inexperienced and completely idealistic.
And isn't that nice?
That's nice.
That is nice.
Uh-oh.
Dougie Lowenstein.
The golf guy.
His name is bogey. That's funny. He's a golf guy.
Future MBAs only. Then why'd you make a flyer? I don't think so. Wow, early days Photoshop.
One thing that I feel like 90s movies got wrong about teens was that I don't really feel like there was like official dates. Nobody was dating. You were boyfriend and girlfriend or you were kissing. But like there was no like, I'll take you out on that date.
But also, were there dates in your life? I realized that.
Like, it really wasn't until, like, my 20s I was taken out on a real date.
Totally.
I feel like.
Never.
And maybe that was not true for everybody.
But, yeah, it's just like you were kissing.
You were kissing, you know, at the football games or kissing in the car or kissing in secret.
Or you were officially BFGF.
And that was it.
Man.
And in the theater circle, I remember when, like, some of the older people would go get their head shots taken.
but really it was just like them in a play, you know?
Oh, yeah.
And we're all just like, wow, they're so professional with their head shots.
But like, they're getting them done at them all, you know?
I mean, we never had headshots, but just senior pictures.
And it was like, oh, is a boy going to give me a copy of his senior picture?
Oh, my God.
Did you get a boy's?
Never.
Senior picture?
No, I did not get lucky in high school ever, not once.
With anything.
Not just sexually.
Just all of it.
I mean, I was cast in a couple of Neil Simon plays, you know,
but other than that, didn't get lucky.
Oh my God, I've been there.
I'd have crawled on it with my husband.
You've been to this location?
Seattle.
Oh.
I think I've been there, too.
The big troll under the bridge in Seattle?
Yeah.
I think I have been there.
2010.
Let's move there, MJ.
Seattle's cool.
You're the one that's trying to get her to go on a date, dude.
Yeah.
Poor cat.
Also, there's something I inherently don't trust about someone this young wearing this light of clothes all the time.
Like, I can't even wear this outfit now.
You know what I mean?
Oh, with the white pants?
Yeah, no.
Yeah.
But especially at that age.
Oh, my God.
Black panties, that's sexy.
Yeah.
That means she wants to have sex someday.
I remember this.
I feel like I bought black underwear because of this.
movie like, okay, this is what we're supposed to do.
But it is very judgmental, Bianca.
Yeah, you're going through her panty drawer. Think about it.
I think the problem is that Joseph Gordon Levitts does, he's like a little boy.
He looks like he's 14 compared to Andrew Keegan, who looks like he's 20.
Yes. And Andrew Keegan looks scary because he looks that old.
Yeah, I'm not saying Andrew Keegan looks hot. He doesn't. I've never been attracted to
And I am attracted to
The character
He's got mean guy face
Unfortunately he just has mean guy face
Yeah mean guy to cult guy pipeline
It's too bad because
I'm not saying Jared Leto but Jordan
Catalano I was just thinking the same thing
Like that's the thing Jordan Catalano was really hot
Of course Jordan Catalano is extremely hot
My God he's drinking a beer
Yeah
Jackie you having a lot of feelings
smoking in the bar, happy feelings.
Oh my God.
Oh, man.
I just want to smoke in the bar with Heath Ledger.
Yeah.
His ghost.
I'll take it.
MJ, you know I'm not picky.
You know ghosts are my hall pass.
I never smoke cigarettes and I'll smoke a cigarette with Heath Ledger's ghost inside a bar,
of course.
Oh, I wasn't talking about smoking a cigarette with him.
But yeah.
Oh, I meant having sex with his ghost.
Oh, having sex with a ghost.
Yes.
That's how you meant just hanging out.
ghost or my hall pass. Right, right, right. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Sounds about like everything I want.
Sounds like our best friend. Don't you dare say that about Slater Kinney. I need to look up how old
Joseph Gordon Levitt is. He looks so young. She has a pair of black underwear. Is just perfect?
Oh my God. What is the hair regimen? Drop it. Let us. Let us.
know how you get that volume bitch.
It's only two years younger than Heath.
He was 18.
So we, so we're, so everything is above board.
On the up and up.
Yeah.
Wow, what a baby face, 18 year old.
But I guess 18 year olds are very young.
They're baby face.
They're baby faced.
I love that he couldn't be seen here as if it's not just a cool place with a bunch of hot women.
Totally cool.
that hairstyle.
Yeah.
And it was real.
Oh my God.
Her with the tube top and the law.
Oh,
the both of them.
Oh, my God.
Oh, she reads Sylvia Plath,
but she's also pretty sexy.
Whoa.
She's really perfected
in every way visually, but she's smart.
So it kills my boner.
She does read.
I date Agua.
Oh my God.
Ball chain necklace.
Ball chain necklace.
These lines that live in my head, my friends and I would just repeat.
I date Agua.
Just pretending like you're at the club.
Yeah.
I think we thought that was really funny.
Bad boy.
Oh my God.
You're a bad boy.
But she's not going to show that she's proud of him or anything.
Whoa.
She's doing his research, MJ.
Yeah.
His bikini killed name drop.
He said sexy.
Could you imagine, like, this is the problem.
This is why older men were so good at grooming us
because we would watch these movies and it'd be like,
and then you're like 16 and you don't think, oh, you're 28.
This is probably, it's probably bad that you're talking to me.
But then you think, and you're just like, oh, but I always want that.
You know, oh, it's bad.
They do nothing except insult you for an hour.
And then they're like, oh, you actually look sexy out there.
And you're like, okay, you know.
Oh, yeah, just the tiniest morsel of any kind of positive energy.
Because they're just like no one could ever like you for who you are.
For who you are?
No, God help you.
Especially the two, MJ, like we were both weird.
No one was ever going to like me for who I was in my perception.
No.
So then you've imagined 20-year-old Heath Ledger is saying that.
club and you're like, I'll do anything for it.
I'll do anything for you. Yeah. No. Oh, you want me to move out of my house and give you like the grant money I made to go to
college? Yeah, I'll do it. She's right. Whoa.
Girl, you got to get, yeah, but you got to get out there too, though. Yes, go have fun.
You could be a anti-capitalist Sylvia Plath feminist who also goes to parties.
That's me. Whoa.
I do like the father.
I know.
He's so funny.
It is.
He's so good.
He's so good.
I do think that it is, I do think that this is, while something you probably, you wouldn't read in a parent book nowadays.
I do think this is a funny thing to add.
Well, nowadays, the kids are.
aren't fucking anymore.
So you don't have to do it.
No, they're not fucking, yeah.
Yeah.
1999, you did have to give that warning.
Yes.
Well, especially, I mean, if you wanted to be a wicket.
Oh, my God.
Stop.
God.
God.
With the, oh my.
Oh.
Who knows.
I know.
This is really breaking my never thirst for anyone under the age of 27 rule.
But again, it's because in my head I am 14 right now, you guys.
Yes, we all are. It's okay, MJ. We're all in this together. We put the preface out there. Everybody knows. I have no children and no boy has ever liked me. Okay. Ever liked you. That's how we're watching this movie. Okay.
No boy has ever given me any positive attention at all. And I can never imagine being happy with somebody who loves me for quiet. When was your first positive attention, MJ from a boy? When was your first positive attention?
I don't even, I don't even want to answer that.
I don't even want to answer that.
Like real actual genuine connection, positive attention from a boy?
Again, not in high school.
It was in college.
College, yeah.
Yeah.
I guess positive attention is such a way to put it to,
because it's like, does that mean that it was good?
Right.
Like, should we have been doing this?
Yeah, I mean, does that?
I had a fellow trumpet player one time told me that my eyes
reminded him of anime in like a hot way in high school. And that was probably the first time.
Oh, that's good. That's good. But I didn't want that from him. And I was like, I don't.
Oh, yeah, that's the problem. Don't say that's also the thing because I was about to say,
if it was positive, but unwanted, then what about that? Yeah, I mean, I was a female at the time
trumpet player. So I did get some attention, but it wasn't, wasn't good. I remembered the time,
oh my God, God help me. I am going to confess this right now.
the time I made out with the guy that everyone knew as the smelly guy.
And I made out with him because he showed me some attention.
And I did it.
I made out with a smelly guy once too, but he was like really great in every way.
He wasn't like an outcast.
He was just confusingly smelly for what an attractive and cool guy he was.
But that's different than the smelly guy.
Yeah.
And I don't, you know, it was one of those things where it's like,
like he knew everyone knew him as that,
but he was like more of like a,
he was like a source of pride.
Yeah, my smelly guy too.
He was like,
this is what can I do, you know?
Yeah, but it wasn't even,
I don't think it was anything like beyond his control.
I think it was just like, yeah.
Oh, like yeah, I'm like the guys who only wear shorts.
And they're like, yeah, I am a guy who only wears shorts.
Yeah.
Andrew Tegan.
You're such a creepus.
You're such a creepus.
Who are you?
Peter Allen?
He is a creep.
He's just a creep in this movie.
Yeah, he is so good at being a creep in this movie.
He is really creepy.
So many actors.
See, and this character, the bogey,
Lowenstein character, is very Can't Hardly Wait coded,
which I forget you have not seen.
I don't think I've seen Can't Hardly Wait.
But that actor who's playing bogey,
we know him from a million things, right?
Yes.
Oh my God, this party, God, it's all coming back.
Oh, yeah, dude.
be now.
Angrily getting trashed.
I love you, Kat.
This is, you know,
there was something about the confidence
of Julia Stiles
dancing in movies
in the late 90s
that really, not that I should talk,
what I do know is that
like, she dances
multiple times in multiple movies, you know?
Yeah. And I don't know if she
Are you saying she was just an actress?
If I'm picking up what you're putting down, you're saying she's not a tamper.
I think she was just an actress, MJ is what I'm saying.
And yet still, and yet still, I want, I still want to kiss her.
Like, I still want to be like, she can even do that.
And I don't care, you know?
Yeah.
Ew.
I'm the nice guy best.
I'm the John Cusack character.
Come back.
They never look at you with the.
heart eyes, do they?
I did want to kiss him. It's really,
this is bringing up a lot for me.
I also never went to a party like this
in high school. I went to parties like this
in college, but never in high school.
Really? Yeah. But again, I was a theater kid.
We didn't, we just didn't, we didn't go. I think there were parties
like this in high school, but we were not invited to them.
Oh, man, we were,
we were at those parties. Yeah.
Well, we also had a guy that,
his parents
I mean
now I don't think
you could get away with it
his older sister
was watching him essentially
while his parents
worked in Japan
oh yeah that's
the parents are just gone
bro
we had a lot of parties
at this guy's house
yeah we had a lot of parties
yeah I mean you everybody needed
how often we would all break
something and then
we would all have to like pull together money to try to replace whatever it was that we broke
because we were all partying in the house.
The poorly supervised friend is essential.
Everybody needs a friend whose parents are out to lunch.
We could do anything because it was before they could like put cameras or anything in the house.
You know what I mean?
So like they had no idea.
No.
Until I mean they did because we were like smoking cigarettes in their house.
You know what I mean?
In my hometown it was like a lot of like people went to the.
the boat, like the gambling boat on Friday Saturday night. So it's like the parents are at the boat.
Now we go, now we party. There she goes. Yes. There she goes. Go cat. But here's the thing.
The confidence though, I want all of. I just, yeah, I want it. Maybe this is self-aware bad dancing
because Julia Seals is such a gifted actor. Yes. Right. That I think. I think. I know that like this was
something that was like embarrassing for her to do.
Like I know that like that's why I feel bad saying it.
It's just funny that she just kept finding herself doing it.
And yet she still does look so hot.
Like it's not like she doesn't look really hot.
She and she, oh, hot and saved.
You know?
Yes, this is yet another movie that had me convinced I needed to, if a boy would only fall in love with me if I like became injured and fell into his arms.
Oh yeah, man.
I'm just like slamming my head against the counter.
You're like, wow.
Whoa, what a ride, man.
Is this the way?
Is this the way to get a boy to like me?
Is this the way to get a boy to like me?
Just all of us desperately watching these movies
trying to figure out how to be a human being.
Totally.
Like, again, the black underwear thing,
I'm like, I think that I bought black underwear
because of this movie.
This movie taught me how to be,
a young adult for better and for worse.
Oh my God.
He's a good guy.
He's a good man.
He Ledger's good.
And he's also really good because he's not going to take advantage of her even though she's
drunk.
And we are led to believe that that makes him a hero.
It makes me think of was it Carrie Fisher that was talking about Bobby De Niro and how
he's such a good man because twice he didn't sexually assault her when.
she was drunk twice.
He didn't.
That makes that, that is, he's the best man she's ever met.
But when you're told, that's so, so sad.
When you're told you get drunk, you deserve whatever happens to you.
And then he's like, I am not, you know.
I'm choosing not to.
He ledger, who is not a rapist.
Who is not.
And you're like, oh, good for you, buddy.
Look at you not assaulting that drunk high school.
Look at you. Look at you.
Proud of you, Joey.
I mean, not Joey.
What's Keith Ledger's character's name again?
Patrick.
Patrick, thank you.
Patrick.
You know, I want to think that whenever I was really hammered, I was this like...
This pretty.
Oh, I've just...
Oh, me, drunk.
Cutsly fall in a sleep on a swing.
Hi. No, hi.
Yeah, no.
I mean, at least we get the puk side of it because like that is more, I would, I, you know,
would just keep talking, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'd be saying, who knows what.
Right, right, right.
Listen to round table, you know, if you want to hear what I used to say when I was blackout drunk.
Really?
Best friend, you're going to go with Andrew Keegan, of course.
Maybe she wasn't a best friend in the first place, MJ.
I think you're right.
Whoa.
I'm a sad boy.
Um, could I oopsie boopsy, have a ride home?
She is a bit of an oopsie boopsie.
Oh my God.
This is Jeff driving you around after Jacket.
Yeah.
Going to Taco Bell every Friday.
Oh, yeah.
It's me playing music.
It's me just screaming about the show.
He loves it.
Whoa.
Whoa.
gets to have that in Coleman
because I'm a smart woman.
Yeah, come to think of it, Kat.
Have you asked Patrick anything about himself?
Anything about, because this is the thing.
You are kind of obsessed with yourself, Kat.
Yeah, and you're only ever talking about how you feel.
Yeah, no offense.
But your head is extremely up your own ass.
And I say that as somebody whose head was also real up their own ass
at this time.
But up your own ass calls out up your own ass, right?
Game, recognized game.
This is, oh my God, she just, like, realize you're a human being.
Oh, you.
I just do feel like.
Should I ask you a question?
Oh, you're there.
Oh, but this is really where you slip out of your seat.
He's such a good guy that he won't kiss her because she's so plowed.
Oh, my God.
Marry me.
And that's unheard of.
I know.
That's how you know he's a good man.
And Kat, you don't appreciate it now, but when,
when you wake up and you think about what Sylvia Plath would do,
you know, you'll appreciate it, I think, but...
No, not the next day.
The next day, she's just going to be brutally embarrassed.
Yes.
And then she's going to be like, he's a good guy.
Oh, and he's a good guy, too,
and he's also got a quirky boy car.
Good guy festival.
You know he's a good guy because of how big his...
What are those?
Lepels?
His lapels.
Yeah.
Is that, you know, because like the wider the lapel, you know?
And also you know.
And you really know that he's a good guy because he's got a cheap car.
That is the, that's the signal.
If it's not a sexy car, he's a good guy.
Okay, but this is not cute.
Joseph Gordon Levitt, you're calling her selfish.
She's not your girlfriend.
I mean, yes, she is selfish.
But like, I just kind of feel like this is a little forward.
Maybe I'm wrong.
Maybe he's right.
I mean, this is weird because she shouldn't have to like him just because he likes her.
It's giving nice guy syndrome, you know.
But, you know, she's into it.
So we're fine with it.
And also, I mean, she is selfish.
I just feel like she's not selfish for not liking him.
No.
But she's using him.
And that is selfish.
So.
But now she realized that she didn't get the other guy.
So she's like, well, I'm going to choose you, which is not.
what we're supposed to take from this movie. We're supposed to take that this is an actual moment,
but... Yeah, no, but it is like, you're a boy and you drove me home.
And he doesn't give a shit. I mean, would you? No. Well, you know? Oh, no, everyone's making
fun of her for dancing when she... Oh, God, that would be horrible. I didn't drink in high school.
Oh, I see, at least the...
everybody was screwing up.
So you were never usually alone.
Yeah.
Usually everybody's like, yeah, but what did you do?
And then you're like calling out everybody.
Totally.
Whoa.
Love the passionate English teacher.
Makes me think of Renaissance Man.
Did you ever see that movie?
Danny DeVito?
I actually don't know if I've seen Renaissance Man.
I don't think so.
Whoa.
It is, it's, he's very funny this.
Do you remember those students, MJ, the ones where some days where you're like, you know what, I'm not dealing with whatever it is you're going to come up with today.
I mean, truly a teacher, I think, is going to love a kid like that, especially when everyone else doesn't give a shit.
Doesn't care at all, yeah.
Even the kid who pushes back on you, you're like, oh, you're a kid.
at least interesting, you know?
Yes.
Oh, I definitely argued a lot in English class for sure.
Oh, I was, yeah.
She was in center stage.
Yeah.
No, I thought I was very smart for how hard I would defend my stances in English class.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I was a horrible know-it-all in class.
Uh-oh.
And most of my teachers like me, but I had a few who were like, shut the hell up.
You're not that smart.
Whoa.
You know, you gotta get told at some point.
And I needed to hear it.
Somebody's got to tell you.
Because he's a good guy.
Yeah, catch up, Joseph Gordon-Levett.
We don't kiss the drunk, the too drunk.
I just want to be drinking beer with them all summer.
Yeah.
I would drink beer with them all summer.
I know.
You imagine?
And they were just like smoking.
and sigs and like go in a bars.
Oh, yeah.
I would absolutely go to these cast parties.
Can you imagine?
It's funny also that you played soccer
because at my school, all the girls' soccer players
were so cool and hot and popular.
And so were the boys.
Soccer is just a hot sport.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Everybody who plays soccer is hot.
Got to be.
You run like 12 miles in the course of a game.
Yeah.
The gams.
You can see them from outer space.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
She's also, like, the fact that she's supposed to be like the quirky artsy best friend where I'm like, man, I was a quirky artsy best friend and I didn't look like that.
Yeah.
I looked a lot more awkward than that.
But the gym uniforms are realistic.
This is exactly what our gym uniforms look like.
Like in every way.
Hey there, Cupid.
Get away from me.
It's always fun.
Yeah.
Eric Archery joke.
It's always fun.
It's a comedy, MJ.
It's a comedy.
It is, and it's very funny.
Oh.
He needs the money, but he is a good man, MJ.
And listen, I know this is a totally different text than she's all that.
But again, think about how many times we were told, if you're even slightly smart, someone will need
to be bribed to date you.
Yeah.
I mean, right?
Well, I
I guess I had a very different experience
just because I was in a smart,
I was like in a smart program.
Everyone was smart.
So technically, so everybody was smart.
So really dependent on what kind of smart you were.
Yeah.
And where you found yourself
because some people were just very, very smart.
And now we understand.
that we were all neurodivergent in different ways, you know.
And we all had different things that we would zone in on.
Yeah.
Is really what it was.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I was never, I was never crushed at a.
I want to mope in a bookstore, by the way.
I love moping in a bookstore.
Oh, yeah.
That's, of course, that's how you know that you're a feminist high schooler.
That's how you know you're a feminist high schooler.
I'm sorry.
Oh, my God, especially.
Do you remember I just had such a flashback.
of being in high school and like being in like the like horror and like the like certain sections of the bookstore to be like yeah this is what I read I'm this type of girl yeah I'm different that's the thing you're just always trying to figure out and I've now that I'm out in grad school we learn about like stages of identity development and like it's yes it is because you're trying to project this is who I am I'm figuring out who I am I need the world to know who I am so this is why I'm lurking in the bookstore you know like
There's like development.
You're blowing my mind right now, dude.
There's developmental science behind how annoying we all were in junior high and high school.
I want you to tell me everything.
That's fascinating.
You know, you're like, you're figuring out yourself as an individual not attached to your parents.
And so you're like, what is my role?
Trying hats on, essentially.
You're just like, am I this?
What is my role in the world?
Am I a Sylvia Plath girl?
Am I a popular girl?
You know, and then you have to really broadcast it very loudly.
Very loudly.
Very loudly.
God, so uncomfortably loudly.
It is so funny when sometimes you see some people, like,
I've never seen a picture of my husband in middle school or high school.
He's like, I'll never show you.
You will never see it.
Really?
And I was like, please.
I was like, I bet I was like, your freak probably matched my freak.
He's like, no.
It didn't.
And I am so, I'm forever curious.
Oh, yeah.
What does it mean?
That's the thing.
Me and Gideon's freak didn't match each other in like content, but in level of freak,
we matched each other.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Really out there.
Freak.
Oh, yeah.
Into different things.
I mean, everything I hear about him, I mean, but also this.
MJ.
I got, I forgot about this.
MJ, how, oh my God, this is like the original.
I feel like this is the original,
me understanding what it is to slip out of my seat.
Like I was just like, ugh, ugh, like, I was just like so filled with a need,
with the marching band that he had like put all this together.
Oh my God.
The pacing of this movie, though.
I mean, they just went to that party.
This happened very suddenly, but...
Yeah, but they went away from each other,
so they had time to think about it, MJ.
Yeah, no, you're right.
They had time to think about it.
And this is also how time works when you're young.
You're like, I fell in love with you on Friday night,
and now it's Monday, and I'm singing you a song.
And I'm for...
I can't stop.
Okay, but honestly, I was thinking about this not that long ago, MJ.
I used to obsess.
Yes, over my crushes.
Oh, yeah.
Like, in my brain, not like I wasn't being like outwardly creepy.
I just would think about them.
Oh, yeah.
And I know I'm not alone in this.
Oh, yeah, no, I know.
By the third day, you're just like, yeah, you've always been inside of me, you know?
Yes, yes, yes.
Look at the running.
He is so great.
And also, Julius Diles is such a good, like, bashful girl in this.
She's just like, oh, my God, me in a way that is just.
It's so sweet.
Me?
It's nice.
Oh my God, and he gets detention.
Oh, yeah, he's the guy who got shot in the ass with an arrow.
Wow, I don't know if I ever recognize that that's what that meant.
He sits down and flinches and stand back in flinches.
Yeah, that's why I didn't understand that callback.
Thank you.
Yeah, man.
The new metal boys.
One of my biggest regrets is that I looked down on the high school stoners.
What's wrong with me?
They're obviously so cool.
You really should.
It really was one of those you hate us because you ain't us.
It really was, it's like, totally, it's like because you're not doing drugs and you really should be doing drugs.
100%.
I was like, oh, those guys are so stoned.
And now I'm like, those guys were so stoned.
Yeah, there's a stoned.
Oh my God.
Look.
Oh, my God.
this part.
This, you know, this is,
this was only minorly
problematic.
Oh, I forget this part.
Don't tell me.
It'll come back.
Oh, yeah, he's getting out.
Oh, right, because she's flirting with him.
Oh, yeah.
She's talking about his penis.
She's talking about his penis.
Yeah.
This would have been an incident report
in 2006, but not in 1999.
We're documenting this in 20206.
Is that what would happen?
If a student's talking to a teacher about his...
About their penis?
Yeah.
We're writing it down.
Oh, so...
We're sending emails.
Yeah.
Something's happening.
I feel like if I were that age and someone started writing that down and be like, oh, my freedom of speech.
Oh, oh, and I can't just be, I can't say this.
Like, I feel like that's the kind of student I was.
See, this is the part I'm talking about it, Jay.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
She flashes him.
He's like, oh, good, a high schooler's boobs.
Yeah, and he just stares at him.
We grew up in the Wild West, Jackie.
This is so funny.
If you showed this to a 13-year-old today,
it would be like, what the fuck?
What?
What?
Can you imagine, you know?
And everybody claps, you know?
Okay, MJ, real life.
Let's say this happens.
What happens then?
Does the kid get in trouble?
Or there's an investigation into the kid, there's an investigation into the teacher.
It's a 15-month long process wherein the Board of Education is investigating everything.
Have you ever watched Summer Heights High?
No.
Oh, man.
That happens.
And then every adult in the building is like, oh, God, the paperwork.
That's what happens after a teenager.
A teenager flashes a teacher and everyone takes a big sigh about the paper.
work.
Yeah, and just knowing how long it's going to take and like how they're going to have to stay late then.
I feel like that's, yeah.
Write it all down, document everything the time, what room were you in when she showed her tits?
Yeah, maybe.
Does that mean you're going to not show this to the kids?
Oh, no, I'm showing it to the kids.
Now I'm just thinking about, you know, all these movies, I'm going to show them probably when they're 12 and up.
But it is going to be, I just, I mean, people, listeners who have teens, tweens, correct me if I'm wrong,
based on the 13 year olds I know, if you showed them this, that scene, they would be just appalled
because they're growing up in this timeline.
So they're like, yeah, you know.
Or I don't, I just, I think they just also would know what would that accomplish, you know?
Yeah.
I mean, luckily, they have, they have been instilled with a sense of, if there's, I do think that there's one thing that kids these days know it is about, like, that's not appropriate.
I also really fell in love with this date.
Oh, yeah.
My, oh, God.
And then you think, have you ever laid in hay?
Nobody wants to kiss in the hay.
No, you don't want to kiss in hay.
I would kiss at paintball, but not in the hay.
Not in hay.
Not covered in paint in hay.
If you're young, it's fine.
Nothing hurts.
You know.
Kissing in the hay.
You're not in hay.
Look at them.
You might not even be doing the laundry, although
cats probably doing her own laundry with
a dad like that.
Yeah.
And also, I imagine she does it because
she doesn't want anyone doing her stuff.
Right. You know what I mean?
And that truck, oh my God.
he's not like the other boys.
He's not.
Not like the other boys.
Oh my God with the.
The wife pleaser?
The wife pleaser?
He, I think that this, I'm realizing I think my icon of wife pleaser might be Heath Ledger and 10 things I hit about you.
Oh yeah, dude.
Look at he.
Where's that wife pleaser?
I am a wife and I am pleased.
Oh, this is when they're really getting.
close. They're sharing more about each other. Has she asked him anything about himself yet? I don't think so.
Here we go. Right here.
Something no one else knows. I mean, I know he's mysterious and everything, but like, has she been like, how are you?
Yeah. Be like, do you have a home? Do you have parents?
Any siblings? Very funny, too, because of course this boy ain't going to the prom.
No
That boy
No I want to get drunk in the back of your truck
Yeah
Take me to a forest
And get me drunk in the back of your truck
That's what I want to do when we're this age
It is crazy that she does go right to what's in it for you
But also sad that how does she ever trust ever again
You know
Is he still in the pocket of big Andrew Keegan at this point?
No remember he gave him the $200 back
God.
He's even hot when he's angry.
She's got good instincts.
She's got good instincts.
Ha, ha.
Oh, it is a French humor.
It's just because you just watch La Miz twice in a row that you feel that you can.
It's because I took French in high school and nobody was speaking with that good an accent.
Oh, God.
I still feel full body pain when I think about how we.
spoke French in my Dubuque Iowa
High School.
Jeprondra.
Oh my God.
Yes, you little Shakespeare girl.
Oh my God.
How many times can you swing
from one movie?
I ask you.
I know. So many, like, identity
forming swings in this movie.
Just swing central over here.
My sexuality is being built,
brick by brick throughout the course of this movie.
Right. Every scene just add something else.
Like between that and then also like the architectural envy I get of this home, you know?
Oh, I know. That's the, that's the 40 year old and us.
Yes, that I'm like this home. How much do we pay for this home in 1999?
And how much do I know I will never be able to live in a home such as this, you know,
with all the built-ins inside? Like, it's.
Like, I'm looking at the, I'm looking at the built-ins, y'all.
I know.
Now, has there been any fanfic written about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character
getting together with Heath Ledger's character?
Whoa.
Whoa.
You know, I think that, that, I think in some ways I also wanted to be Joseph Gordon-Levitt,
but I didn't want to sleep with Bianca.
I wanted to sleep with Heath Ledger.
So where is-
With Heath Ledger, yeah.
So if you get a little bit more representation.
So you guys, if you have written any of that, if you want to pass it along, you know.
It's got to be out there.
Oh, I'm sure it's out there.
I'm just scared to look up what else it's surrounded by.
Real world.
Oh, my God.
In Seattle, too.
Oh, be still my heart.
Oh, my God.
Sisters don't shake hands.
Sisters got a hug.
Oh man
Oh yeah, this scene
Yeah, dude
Julia Stiles is a fabulous actress
She is
And this is some real character development
They're like she's not just a bitch
She's a bitch with a reason
Yes
And what happened
Damn
And that is
Very real
Such a real man especially
Dude oh no
You just kept it all inside
Yeah, that's super real
inside. Yes, girl. I mean, generally we don't
Dick Shane, but if he's being a banning to you,
you do what you got to do. Do what you got to do.
Knowledge is power, MJ.
Right. Maybe it's because you still call him daddy, and it sounds
like maybe you're not ready to take the next step.
Sorry, I know some people still call dads, their daddies. I'm sorry.
Sorry, Long Island people.
Yes, I apologize. It is not. It's just
in Queens, it stopped at Queens, you know?
Man, that's not true.
I knew a lot of people that called their father's daddy.
A lot of Queens did.
It is like the geographic area of Long Island,
including Queens where they're like mommy and daddy.
Yes.
Here's the thing, the dad really did create.
Now I'm putting my parent head on.
Don't bind your sister relationship, your kids' relationship,
your kids' relationship, you're dooming it by being like,
oh, if one of you is an angry feminist bitch
and you don't want to, doesn't want to sleep with anybody,
then your other sister's going to hate you.
Like, you can't do that, Daddy.
You can't do it, Daddy.
Daddy, I love him.
But Daddy, I love him.
Oh, man, this commercial.
That's such so funny as it just focuses on his head.
And it is like the dad who has no idea how to talk to his teenage girls thing also is like I remember really like enjoying how well they did this.
Because it is very like I think that like I think it was a good thing to capture.
Totally.
Like well meaning dad who cares about his daughters but has no idea how to connect with them in this stage of their life.
Well, and especially divorce rates, like, I feel like it's like, we're so heavily represented in the 90s, you know?
Why is Bianca's dress not?
Separates.
But I feel like it's not fitting her the way that it, it's a little baggy, no?
I mean, that's, I think it's just supposed to be like a crop and a ballerina, yeah.
I mean, I can look up.
I know I have, this is not good.
I like the skirt.
I like the top.
It just...
You're right.
It's a separate.
I would take it back.
I reserve my judgment.
As someone who was in school at this time,
there were not enough ska bands at my school dances.
Oh, yeah, no.
Never a live band once.
No, never.
Hey.
God, I was shaped by this movie in so many ways.
Her hair, her dress.
They literally just shopped from all the thrift stores.
In Seattle for all, like, this is like, they were like taste makers.
Really?
Really?
With this costume designer.
Yeah, they were with all of these looks.
That's cool.
It's like such a groundbreaking movie because, like, like, bringing like the grunge fashion.
Like, as well as like the prep side of that world.
That's cool.
My favorite dress that I wore to was either a homecoming or a prom was like, was like
a recycled dress from some, my mom's friend's kid who was.
was like 10 years older and it was like revisited and it was like my favorite.
Ooh.
You and your big, dumb white jacket.
Yeah, you look stupid.
You look dumb, Andrew Kagan.
What are you doing here?
Nobody wants you.
Yes, Daddy.
Yes, Daddy.
That's what the daddy's for.
I mean, this would have been insane, you know?
So cool.
Oh, and the sisters are connecting.
I mean, I don't know if you notice, but my hair is very this-esque for my wedding.
Uh-huh.
The Shakespeare girl?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Bernard.
MJ.
MJ.
That's nice.
Oh, my God.
As a cosplay girl.
Oh, forever my heart.
As a theater, babe.
Forever my heart.
I need to figure out who the band is because I know these songs.
I have band at the end.
Letters to Cleo.
Okay, letters to Cleo.
Yeah, they're just a band cover and I want you to want me.
Oh, what a good scene.
MJ.
I love it.
God, I love these every dance scene at the end of the movie.
Oh, with the chin and the, oh.
Oh my God with the boys and their hips.
It's crazy that watching this now, it's like we're not having nostalgia for high school.
We're having nostalgia about the way this movie made us feel about what high school would be when we were younger than that.
And it wasn't.
Because like this is not my experience of joy right now is not nostalgia for high school.
It's nostalgia for like the youthful ideas of what life is going to be like.
man he was in Milwaukee
we love Milwaukee Jackie
she's just I was like wow our first conversation about you
wow I know something about you now
oh my God and so much happens right at the very end
no no no no wow
oh man it's all coming back to me Jackie
it hurts my chest I know
I know I'm feeling
So I'm so stupid with this white coat on.
I'm having an emotional reaction on par with the one I had at 14, you know.
That little bitch.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sister solidarity.
Oh my God.
I mean that.
Okay.
Immediately that is solved.
Okay, great.
Yeah.
Can we sum this up real fast?
Yeah.
Oh, wait.
No, we have to get to the.
We need the poem.
Oh, we're going to get the poem.
Get about you.
Oh, I get about you.
Get about you.
I thought about you.
Well, don't grab her and kiss her, Heath.
I know, but it was passion, you know.
It's 1999.
It was romantic at the time.
Looking down the grand staircase.
I know.
Let's also just point out that at least my high school did not have the money for this type of venue.
It was in the gym.
And that's fine.
We had a great time.
And we liked it.
Wait, even your prom was in the gym?
Maybe prom was at like the college cafeteria.
Oh, okay.
I was like, we went somewhere for prom.
Prom might have been at college.
Homecoming was in the gym.
Oh, he brought up sailing so long ago and he was like, do you want to go sailing?
Oh, you're right.
Bianca is once again wearing white pants, Jackie.
I wouldn't have even noticed.
It's just such a.
Well, I think, you know, also her name is Bianca,
and it's all like the purity.
Right, right, right, right.
So I think it's also that.
Right, right.
But she is, yeah, wearing a lot.
I just feel like I don't play that.
Are you cherubs on the back of the sweater?
Oh, look at you pointing out the symbolism to me that I'm completely missing.
Bianca, why should wear it white all the time?
it's full of sperm
what's it happen
is that how you ask your kids
about things at school
this is what I will be like
is it hopping
oh
I love this scene
my god or is this hitting you
in a different place now
now I'm not 14 I'm 40 again
at least you don't have that hair line
not yet
you're not going to have that hair line you know each of my kids has two wolves inside of them one is
bianca one is cat i got i don't have a cat and bianca i have two people who are both cat and bianca
wow that's a lot i know that's a lot of personality it sure is in one small package yeah you know
one fierce little package yeah one 40 pound package okay here it is she's thought
about it and you know
one weekend is like
seven weeks. Oh, am I
gonna cry? Oh my God
with the loose
back. Oh, she's
it's giving Delia's catalog
in a good way. Oh my God, in a good
way. Oh, with that braid.
The big banner that says
what's popular is not always right, what's right?
It's not always popular. Oh my
God. Okay.
Okay. That's a
whatever.
She's warming up.
I still don't know anything about you.
I got chills.
You know, you gotta leave it all out on the floor.
Whoa, look out at the water.
It is very funny to imagine a time that I saw that scene and I was like,
that's the best shit I've ever seen in my life.
I mean, it was the most romantic,
between him singing to her and then that scene into this,
because he supports her dreams
because he listened to her?
Yeah.
Because he listened to her.
And even though Clueless is my favorite movie,
like I didn't really identify with the love story of her and Josh
the way that you can really identify with like,
maybe some bad boy's going to come into town and save me, you know?
Yeah.
And see me for who I really am.
Right.
Whoa.
That line.
Oh, my God.
So it's a good thing.
It's a good thing.
you showed your tits to that adult.
That's what sealed the deal for me, honey.
That's when you showed your tits to that adult for me.
Oh my God, they're such a hot couple.
I know.
Oh, my God, there's such a hot couple.
They both have beechy waves.
I know.
Oh, my God, and their bechy waves are going to get entangled in each other's
beachy waves.
You don't want me.
Oh, my God.
I can't.
To be young.
And so this scene was done.
with a helicopter shot that was very, very expensive.
And the swooping that it ends up doing
ends up scaring the band to such an extreme
that they almost didn't get the shot
and almost had to start all over again
because they thought they were about to like crash into it.
Are you kidding?
But they just were like, keep playing.
Keep playing.
They were just like they're playing and playing and playing.
which is fun.
So this is not green screen at all.
Like this is a, this is like a big expensive helicopter shot.
Pre-dron.
We're not using drones.
We got a helicopter.
This is like they got scared.
And so they're just up there cold and scared.
Wind is blowing.
If there's a helicopter way too close to them.
Way too close.
They probably can't hear anything if there's a helicopter.
No.
And you can see her hair is like.
like movie which means that like the the chopper must be close you know oh what a fun fact it's
kind of so thank you guys this was uh this is really great i'm really glad that we uh this one by in the
blink of an eye this movie was so it's such a good movie it's there is not a wasted line in
this movie. No, it's an absolutely, um, I, you're right. And like, it's,
yeah, that's it. Man, they used to, it's a real go to the theater movie. I was really sorry.
I was really zoning in on the how close that chopper most as it was circling them to,
man, that is, um, that must have been very scary. I want to look up the rooftop shot. It was 500,
grand every time the copter takes off.
500 grand, so they really couldn't screw up.
Wow.
I don't remember if there's like an end scene.
Yeah, did they do post-credit scenes at this time?
I don't know.
This was my exact favorite.
Look at this.
I mean, look, they're going back over.
It was probably that scene.
That's probably where they really.
Okay.
Oh, are the bloopers?
Hot.
MJ, could you imagine?
Could you imagine?
That's where you're supposed to see.
Bye.
I'm gone.
Could you imagine MJ?
Perkeys.
Perkeys.
Oh my God.
Just thinking of all the silent dancing they had to do.
Silent God, how much fun they most have had.
See, now yeah.
Now that's what.
what I'm talking about.
They all love
tagging out with each other.
God, they had so much fun.
Boing.
Stadium High School, Tacoma.
We did a show in Tacoma.
That's a real high school, though, man.
Can you imagine?
Yeah.
All of it was on location.
Wow.
Ha.
Oh, my God.
I love them so much.
my God, unbelievable.
That when I die, I hope I get to travel to the set of 10 Things I Hate About You in 1999
and just be one of the people on set having fun with them.
My God.
My God.
Man, guys, thank you guys so much for joining us on that journey.
That was, man, it's so good.
It's so good.
It's such a good movie.
It really is.
Like, I know Clueless, like I've seen Clueless a bunch of,
of times in the past 10 years. I know how good it is. Like I said, I had not revisited this in a long
time. It's just such a good movie. It's so good. It really is. I really is. And I hope you guys
had fun. And whether you watched along with us or if you just audially joined us, no matter what,
we hope you had a blast. And we hope you guys have a fabulous rest of your week. And we'll be
back with Second Helpings tomorrow. Yay. Everybody, have a
