Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, everybody, okay everybody, it's a big day, it's a big day, it's a big day, it's a gobble day, and what's really wonderful, MJ, is what you are going to learn very fast is that this movie has nothing to do with Thanksgiving. It's not a Thanksgiving movie is what I understand. It's not a Thanksgiving movie, and that is what we will be watching for Thanksgiving. Okay. And hopefully, if you are checking this out over audio only, I would love if you would pull up the movie, and we're going to do a three, two, one start, and we're going to start when I start saying the word start.
Starting point is 00:00:48 But also, if you are one of our Patreon members, we are also showing the full movie as well as MJ and I watching said movie if you would like to join us over on the Patreon and that's actually by the time you're listening to this it'll already be out so go check that out
Starting point is 00:01:06 if you would like to watch the movie if you don't want to rent it if you don't have it on DVD somewhere and come hang out with us over on patreon.com slash page 7 podcast and you know what
Starting point is 00:01:18 if you do have it on DVD somewhere sound off somewhere in the comments write an email I want to know it I need to know I need to know we're proud of you if that is is the case. I'm already proud of you. And I'm sad that
Starting point is 00:01:30 we're not watching this on a DVD right now, MJ, but you know, beggars can't be choosers and I am genuinely excited to share this with you. I can tell you're genuinely excited and that makes me genuinely excited. I'm ready.
Starting point is 00:01:46 I was talking to my mother earlier and I was like I'm watching Adam's family values with MJ later because they've never seen it And my mom had never seen it either. Where were you when you were watching it? I was like, Mom, we've seen this movie a hundred thousand times. And I feel like she's also watching it this evening.
Starting point is 00:02:08 And she was like, I'll let you know if I've seen it. And I was like, I'm pretty sure you've seen it. But, you know, so we're all watching right now, everybody, where Fival Goes Westing across the country. We're all watching Adam's Family Value. together under one beautiful night sky and for those of you again on audio I'm about to start so prepare your starting fingers fingers at the ready and I all right I'm about to do it so prepare ready we're going to go in three two one start all right it's the mountain it's the Oh, it's the mountain and it's the stars, baby.
Starting point is 00:02:55 And it might be a little bit of a wailing soon. And I ain't talking about sperm. I mean that. Oh. Roald Julia is perfect. I, I, then my poor mother did have to listen to me, talk at her about Adams family for another 25 minutes. And is this? Do I need, is this number two in the series?
Starting point is 00:03:25 Do I need, like, I mean, I know the Adams family, but I'm just going to go along for the ride. I don't need to know. I'm assuming that you just broke my soul to tell me you haven't watched the first Adam's family movie. That's correct. We're going to have to go back and fix that. You don't need it for this. Okay, I figure it.
Starting point is 00:03:45 You don't need it for this. I know the idea. It was very much a part of the zeitgeist in the 90s. Oh, yeah. Like this franchise. I know that you can't, like, miss all of it. Totally. No, I know the, I know the deal.
Starting point is 00:04:04 I just don't remember, like, sitting and watching it. God, I feel like we need to be smaller over here. Were you scared of it when you were a kid? No. No. No, I love, I've always loved it. I want to be Angelica Houston. I'd like to be, honestly, any of them.
Starting point is 00:04:23 them. I'll take any of it. I'll definitely be cousin it, if that's what they asked me to be. But definitely since I have married into the Adams family, it has changed. It has, yeah. Get me, yeah. A baby. Right now. Oh, there's a baby in the second one. they also are everything I've ever wanted to be in a relationship uh-huh now I'm going to go into a whole deep dive about the Adams family because I know there's a lot of symbolism of like being like outsiders and rejected by the community.
Starting point is 00:05:23 And it is crazy that they are rejected by the community because technically they're just a wonderful loving family. Right. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. for each other, right? Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:05:57 It's an Adams. It's an Adams. It's an Adams. Dede-de-de-dee-deeat. I have always wanted to be a part of their family. I now am married to, you know, I'm obviously in the Adams family, but also Jeff and I have a very Adam's family. We have a very Morticia and Gomez
Starting point is 00:06:21 and Morticia relationship. Well, that's nice. And this is the part that walked Winnie last year. Ah, the hand. She was fine with the opening parts, but it was Thing that really put her over the edge. I think I mix up Thing and It sometimes. It is the hair. Correct. Thing is the hand. Got it. Correct.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Bitch, go off. This is like unlocking memories of like happy male toys and stuff when I was a kid. Oh, I bet. I also really wanted this room. It says it's dark, it's depressing. desolate. It's a toddler dream. It's a toddler dream. Ah. It's an odd omns.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Little baby looks like Gomez. And it's all scary things. The baby. I think this is also why I really like this, because I did kind of feel this way about my niece. When my niece was born, I'm like, we can't all be alive. Yeah. Also, I guess Wednesday was probably your first introduction to being a goth, right? Oh, I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:04 I mean, all of them. Yeah. I can't imagine being, like, also sound off if you identified with the Adams family because you had a much younger sibling. Interesting, yeah. Did this also make you feel seen? Great question. I remember having a hard time with it because I didn't identify with either of the kids.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Oh, because you didn't want to be a goth at all. I just, oh, yeah, I was like, I'm not Wednesday and I'm not the boy. And I know, I knew Wednesday was kind of the more interesting one. Yeah, I mean, Pugsley's kind of the dumber one. Yeah. And that's Lurch, who also I low-key, high-key, high key would love to kiss. As well as Uncle Fester.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Uh-huh. Who's this? Grandma. It's Carol Kane. Oh. Christopher Lloyd is perfect in these films So the first movie is all about getting Fester back. Like, Fester was estranged. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And so he's brought back into the fold. Okay. So they've just gotten Fester back. Okay. As a part of the family. Okay. And he's like a true psychopath. Like, he's supposed to be very evil, but also everybody loves him.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Was it, like, older Adam's family? Was that a show or a movie? Do you know, like, original? Show. Okay. Got it. Hey, I'm pretty sure it started a show. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:45 But I would love to get into, like, the history of the Adams family, because I've never really gotten into it. I think I'm mostly just obsessed with these movies. Yeah. Did you say you saw the cartoon Adams family, or no? The, like, I saw, like, the one, like, the one of the more recent ones that was, like, the animated. Yeah. Yeah. Me and the kids watched it in, like, a hotel or something, and enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:11:13 I just love that I feel like this was also reminiscent of how Henry and I spent a lot of our time, like, minus all the death. I feel like we were always, like, creating weird things, making weird setups. Totally. Yeah, and as much as my kids are scandalized by violence and stuff sometimes, they also do love 90s movies. Now I'm like, maybe they'll enjoy this. Maybe. Maybe the first one? Maybe. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:11:52 The repeated efforts to kill a baby might not go over well with them, but, you know. You know, they got to learn some time. It'll unlock something and then you got to deal with that. It's also something very seductive to me about having a family cemetery on your land. Totally. And then you have dates in it. The house and the manner is incredibly compelling. Always has been to me, too.
Starting point is 00:12:31 I grew up on a house with, like, I grew up on a street with, like, very old houses. And there was, like, a full abandoned Victorian house on the street that we all thought was a haunted house. And it was cool. Oh, my God. I always make the joke about Edward Cisorhands because, like, that huge house was supposed to be just at the end of the road. And I'm like, nobody ever was like, what's going on over there? The huge abandoned mansion. Yeah, I think, honestly, at this time, there really was just an abandoned Victorian house on my block that was in full disrepair and kids would wander in and out of it.
Starting point is 00:13:07 That was the 90s. Miranda. Miranda! Cynthia Nixon, is that you? Oh, yeah. They're trying to hire a nanny to take care of the kids because the kids are being so destructive. Oh, my God. I had no idea.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Cynthia Nixon was here. That was it, though. Oh. The Devil Puppet. All right. This is, I, I like it, and I like imagining young Jackie loving this, you know. And especially with the arrival of Debbie, one of my favorite characters of all time. Oh, it's, uh,
Starting point is 00:14:16 Joan Kusack. Joan Kusack, whoa. Yes, bro. I love Debbie. Ha, ha, ha. Also, it sounds like something Jackie would say. I love your dress. It's so tight.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Thank you. but also it's another one of those chock full of jokes you didn't quite get when you were a kid and then it was one of these movies that like as I got older and I'm just like oh my God I love this 20 times more now totally everything Debbie what's going on for uncle Fester. He was just reading a book called Strange Men and the Woman Who Avoid Them Because Fester wants to fall in love.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Okay. Pubert. Uh-huh. They're creative, M.J. They're not like the other kids, okay? It's a doll. That's good. I think I also always loved that Pugsley was the dumb one and Wednesday was the smart one. Yeah, yeah, I remember liking that as a kid, too.
Starting point is 00:16:39 being like the boy's not the main like I see now that it's an ensemble but I knew that Wednesday as a kid that was like the one, you know? Right. I mean, Bugsley is in it just as much. It's just, you know, a different character. I feel like Wednesday was the one who compelled every,
Starting point is 00:17:05 like was the more compelling of the kids, though. But maybe that's just because we were all baby guts. I'm in. I've always wanted to play, Fester. Uh-huh. Ha ha ha ha ha. Also, the lighting on Angelica Houston is just so over the top
Starting point is 00:17:41 which I know that was always what they would do like it was always like lit only on her eyes people are always talking now about how movies are lit worse than they used to be and I like I feel like I don't have enough of a visual eye for it but I do really enjoy yeah I would love to hear more about that yeah like what to look for yeah like bring back gaffers who know how to light how to do it yeah if we could all just live in one huge mansion i feel like
Starting point is 00:18:26 the zabrowski's also would get to a point where we started setting baby dolls on fire Mom Gideon and I did just watch the Elvira Mistress of the Dark and had a lot of fun Oh my God Oh, my God Uh oh, that's Joan Qusack Wait a second
Starting point is 00:19:01 And that's Joan Cusack. Uh-oh. So that is also the thing, MJ. I don't know if you know this about the Adams family, but, like, Gomez Adams, like the Adams family are supposedly the richest of all, like, fake characters to ever exist. Really? They have so much money. He has just got money.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Like, it's such a diverse portfolio. Really? That he's canonically very, very rich. All right. I did not know that. Ha. It's a Kathy Lee Gifford joke. The kids will love that.
Starting point is 00:19:53 And, like, the Alvira movie is, like, almost exclusively one-liners. Like, I would say in lieu of plot is just one-liner. And I, and I, but I do love that style of like old-fashioned joke. Camp and just fall in shock, yes, exactly. Exactly. I mean, isn't it the dream, though, to like worm your way? into a rich family by taking care of the children? I mean, you and I were both nannies, we know.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I know. I think it's kind of where it all came from. I mean, pubert is a very cute, baby. Yeah, pubert is cute. You know they. They don't have cameras through the house. Look at this stock portfolio she's looking at. The baby's tied to the tent seat.
Starting point is 00:21:17 I mean, it's one way to keep them around. Then I realize as I'm watching this, I'm like, maybe this wasn't a great idea for a watch-along because it's also just genuinely a great movie. It's a great movie, and also it's so visual. Like, it's such a, the world building is so good. That's why I wanted to make sure we recorded the video while we were watching it. I feel like it's just such a wonderful movie.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Yeah. That's all right. We watch good movies for watch along sometimes. Sometimes. You're smart. Kids are onto your game, girl. If there's one thing I also identify with the Adams family with, um, Summer camp.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Summer camp. And if there's one thing the Adams family hates, it's the outdoors. Oh, my God, the fashion. I love a 90s movie so much. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Also, a family that loves each other, a husband and wife that love each other, they really support and care about their children. Yeah, love them unconditionally. Homicide.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Also, I die for Christine Beranski. I'll do anything for her. Because that's what being privileged is all about. She's drinking poison. That's what being privileged is all about. Wow. him. Bernard!
Starting point is 00:25:01 Bernard the elf. When he's a baby. Whoa, pre-Santa Claus. Oh, yeah. This is early 90s, right? 92 or something? Oh, yeah. Maybe 94.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Okay. Uh-oh. She's got a crush on a nerd. She's got a crush on a nerd. And also, I loved that for her as a goth that loves nerds. I'm sold. You got me in already, Jackie. I'm enjoying this movie quite a lot.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Sorry, I'm just so excited for you to experience the world of the Adams family. I mean, keep selling it to me. They don't make them like this anymore. They don't. Gabby. Gabby! Gabby! Through windows, doorways, keyholes.
Starting point is 00:26:39 I mean, can you, I will say, I felt so much like Fester when I lived with Henry and Natalie when I was really sad when I first moved here. Totally. I really felt fester-y. Yeah, I've been the fester. Right. Would you? Would you? Would you? Yes or no? What? With Lurch? Would I fuck Lurch? That's the question. Yeah. Yeah, that's the question. Yeah. It's either Lurch or Gary.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Yeah, Lurch, I choose Lurch. Okay. It's like, I feel impressed with the amount of homicide jokes that they can make in a children's movie. Yeah, that's, again, best part of 90s movies is just like absolutely zero consider. that you should like be careful about something like that and I love that also technically this like vibe was what I really wanted for my wedding if we could have gotten married in like a cave that yeah like a cave fancy restaurant and a cave oh my god if is there a cave restaurant does someone have a cave restaurant can we go to a cave restaurant got to be
Starting point is 00:28:58 Yeah, that's, that's old school. Remember, that's old school, weird things to say. Good old anti-European jokes. Yeah, man. We don't get them anymore. Yeah. Did you have a family that you wanted to be a part of when you were growing up? Definitely.
Starting point is 00:30:05 I'm trying to think of, like, what my equivalent of this was. I would always, I mean, yeah, I would always, like, oftentimes, you know, there was two kids. And so it would be like, oh, it's just like my family, you know, like. Right. Like, Hook, like the Hook family. Oh, yes. Oh, yeah. Was it big.
Starting point is 00:30:23 That really captivated my mind a lot. Oh, yeah. pretty much anything with an older brother and a younger sister at that time period. Yeah, the Simpsons. Fester doesn't know quite how to be charming
Starting point is 00:30:43 the way his brother turns, so that's the problem. The problem, though, is Fester's very, very smart. He's, like, insanely smart. So I guess technically this is also another thing like in watching Buffy, we're realizing, oh, Anya is just a neurodivergent person and then you watch the adams family and it's like oh
Starting point is 00:31:06 y'all all just got something going on you're like learning how to fit in with the rules of society as if you're learning a new language which is what it's like for a lot of people look at them now this is romance yeah i find this i just find it interesting because i don't think i would have liked this that much as a kid, because there is, I don't have the goth gene. Like, there's something about, like, the darkness and the spookiness that does not speak to me. Whereas, like, even, I mean, even some of my kids' friends as young as four and five are goths. Like, they love bats and, witches and, like, I think it's fascinating just to be like this, to think of the type of kid who would see this movie and be like, I love the darkness. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Oh, spread me on that spread me on that sandwich I love a dance sequence. Yeah, we're just, I'm just sucked into it. I just wish, I mean, you know, we talk about dancing with the stars the way that we do. Yeah, this is also like lately with Buffy. Buffy's just been so good that our watchalongs are just sitting in silence. It's almost silent.
Starting point is 00:32:49 Like, what are we doing here? Oh my God, Argentine Tango. This is Dancing with the Stars. Dancing with the Stars has prepared us for this moment. This is what we've been waiting for. Yes. I have a love like this, and it's great. although it's like how do they keep their cool like how do they stay so amazing you know what i mean
Starting point is 00:33:34 yeah i don't give me like the pop-up video on adam's family values you know oh this headgear that's bringing me back did you ever have your headgear no but my brother didn't i was jealous which is funny because obviously i wouldn't be if i had what is fucking wrong with us i was also jealous of Henry's braces in his retainer. Yeah, I thought it was special. Yeah, I wanted one. And then he's, I just remember him being like, it's so painful. Why do you want this?
Starting point is 00:34:11 Yeah. Nose job joke. Remember when, I feel like in the 90s people talked about nose jobs all the time a lot more, but I feel like now they've become so commonplace that it's not. as discussed. I think people talked about other than the 90s, my assumption is because they were less common. And now it's just like, that's just what normal people do now, sadly, normal people with money. I'm going to turn mine upside down. That's the job. My job is giving it a torque. I do think I low-key thought that I could
Starting point is 00:34:55 be a Black Widow, like, as a profession for a little bit, but. Ha, ha ha. Aww. What is the rating on this movie? You got to be PG? Yeah, I think it's PG. I'm looking it up just because I'm curious. Fascinating the different sensibilities of,
Starting point is 00:35:25 kids movies or family movies from this time oh is this too much for a child the whole scene about virginity yeah is that too too i mean they explain it and then you know what it is 93 and it's rated pg 13 well pg 13 oh we were watching this oh very young well we were watching yeah but i thought i mean it was always marketed as a kids movie again I remember the Happy Meal Toys. I mean, you know, it's good to learn these things. Yeah. You got to learn some time.
Starting point is 00:36:08 It's true. Oh, no. Yeah, Christopher Lloyd is doing great. I'd pay. Hey. His animal lector mask. I love this Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Starting point is 00:37:12 I love this support, you know? Yeah, they. dug her up. Wow. I love not, you know, no one's going to say anything about the red flags. You know, no one's going to, it's like, I feel like we should discuss this. I think that, you know, I am that guy. I would be that person to be like, I don't know if this is a good idea.
Starting point is 00:37:55 I feel bad because I always want to call that guy Janush because of Ghostbusters 2. Uh-huh, yes. But I can never remember his real name and he'll only be Yanush in my brain. It's driving me crazy. I got to look it up.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Uh, uh, man, me at that age, oh, fuck, no, would someone have touched me? We don't hug. Hey, that's why you like this movie. Ha! Wait, did you ever go to a camp like this? I went to Girl Scout camp, which was kind of like this, but for like a week, not for like this. I never did like sleepaway camp, like how a lot of people on the East Coast do it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:06 Sorry if you've told me this before. No, no. It was sleepaway camp, but again, it was like a week. I feel like the East Coast thing is to go for like, you know, many weeks. Oh, Bernard. Bernard. He's got a brief history of time by Stephen Hawking. You know, I've never quite understood that joke.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Him screaming at the Michael Jackson Healed the World poster. Yes. Yeah. Like, I know that this is before all the stuff, right? Yeah. before any of that. Yeah. I think there was already some weirdness happening by 93.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Let us know if you remember more back then. Yeah. Ugh, these privileged people. Bad privileged kids. I like that they're all blonde. I know. Did you look up what his name is? I got distracted because I couldn't find it right away,
Starting point is 00:40:47 but I got the whole cast list in front of me, so I'll find it. Oh, man. group sing-alongs. Problem is that, okay, his name is Peter McNichael. I love you. Peter McNickle, thank you. I just, we got a, oh God, does Bernard have a memoir? Would only me and, would only I care about that? I would say me and you, but.
Starting point is 00:41:24 I really, I wish I had. This feels like this missed opportunity for me because I totally, even though I wasn't a got, like, I was, I love to hate on others, you know, especially other children. I would have really like enjoyed seeing Wednesday's disdain for the other kids. For the other kids, yeah. I feel like I was always just ready to be grown up. Is that a sad way for a child to feel? That was how I felt too, and I'm sure that there is some psychological reasons behind that. I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:41:56 Don't need to get it to right now. I'm sure. Yeah. No, we don't need to unpack that. I just love the idea that. I just love the idea that the Adams family has many relatives throughout the world that are like them just in different ways. yeah again the world building is incredible i understand why you wanted to immerse yourself fully in it i mean it's not why i got married to jeff that would be creepy i feel like at
Starting point is 00:42:40 that extent then i'm just like what are we doing here you know ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha this was another thing that like i saw this movie so many times so young and i didn't understand what that meant until i did and i was like what yeah i love i although movies are still really great at doing that. I was just talking about what was I just thinking about? Oh, because Zootopia 2 is coming out. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Oh, sweet little allergic for Nard. He's so allergic, and she loves that about him. That's nice. But also, I don't know which version of Christine Baranski. I want to have sex with most, but I guess it's probably the who.
Starting point is 00:44:08 We're not going to unback that either, I'm okay. I got to look up a retrospective of all the versions of Christine Bransky to decide which one I want to have sex with. Oh, Sybil? Maybe Sybil. Bernard. I love that this kid became a little heartthrob for this movie and for Santa Claus. It's very cute.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Right? He's not like the other boys. And I, if there's one thing I remember from mentioning that I didn't have a crush on Bernard, it's how many people did have a crush on Bernard. Oh, baby, did I? And he is a very similar type to my husband, and so I think that it's, I support you. And again, another thing, we don't have to unpack it.
Starting point is 00:45:07 We don't have to get it, you know. Oh, getting married in the family's cemetery is so cool. Very cool. Yeah, honestly. down to the yamaca, I could probably find a picture of young gideon, young Gideon, looking exactly like this kid, the young Bernard. Yeah, I bet, I bet. Was he allergic to everything too? Oh, yeah. He was literally allergic to everything for a while.
Starting point is 00:45:36 And he went to Hebrew school, so all of his little childhood pictures, he has a big old yamaica on his head. Ha, ha, ha. Oh. Also, I understand why you also confuse it and thing cousin it and thing because cousin it also doesn't speak but he doesn't but everyone understands him okay but i understand why you would confuse the two yeah Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:18 Joan Kusack. Oh, to be a black widow. Treg of the corpse behind the cart. These hats, these hats, these bonnets. He even can pull off a top. Top hat. How do you feel about top hats, though? I mean, it's not my favorite type of fancy hat, but I'm not anti.
Starting point is 00:47:18 What's your favorite type of fancy hat? Boater. Which one's that one? Like the music man hat. Oh. Flat on top. The flat hats. Circular.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Yeah. Okay. This is just for the watching audience on Patreon. I've got two right above my head. Wow. Those are your favorite hats. Yeah. Are they favorite hats for you or for people you are seducing? It's always the question.
Starting point is 00:47:48 For me. Okay. But yeah, I don't think I'd be deeply attracted to a person in a top hat just because of the type of people who tend to do that. To wear top hats, unless they're at a function, you know. Uh-oh. me my bathing toaster. You can't Black Widow the Adams family that easily, Joan Kusack. No, you certainly can't, MJ.
Starting point is 00:48:25 He sees it as foreplay. Which I think is actually really cute. Very sweet. Oh, Oh, Fester, he's so sweet. I mean, it is his brother, but... Yeah, it's a little gross, but I, it's also sweet.
Starting point is 00:49:20 He's trying to... He just doesn't know any other thing... He doesn't know any other love. Yeah. No hand, no hand, doesn't. Whoa. No. Jackie, you're going to cry? No.
Starting point is 00:50:11 I know what happens. Oh, no. Bad Black Widow. But also how great is Debbie, though. whoa she's going right to it power of seduction god it's just a problem man i say this is a little hot egg and vodka hell yeah man breakfast of champions for babies oh for babies yeah even better there was a little bit of worsesher in there MJ have you tried it Have not tried it
Starting point is 00:51:11 I know that there's a lot of raw egg In like in certain cocktails though right I think there is My dad's mom used to make him drink like raw eggs for like health And he said it was one of the worst things Ever like why do you have to do that and why can't you cook them I can't you cook them? I don't know It was the 50s
Starting point is 00:51:35 It was not a great parenting choice, I think. Poor choice, I would say. They killed a bald eagle. It's an American bold eagle. They are now. Wow. this is the longest one of her husbands ever lived oh yeah but also the fits right they're very 90s don't get me wrong like i wouldn't i i don't know if i could i mean yeah debby's fits are special i mean if i had the blonde wig i could yeah the blonde bob Okay, this seems like a good time for me to rush to peepie town.
Starting point is 00:52:39 I'll be right back. Have a great time. You keep going. I mean, they are missing the hair piece, but... God, I'm not over-explaining the Adams family, am I? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha no wonder i want to be debby i mean just that that moment alone Oh.
Starting point is 00:53:42 Oh, my God, he just loves so much. Oh, the passion. I mean, give it up, right? I mean, if you were, like, were you looking for someone like... Gomez? Morticia I mean I know I'm not alone I know it's not all of us
Starting point is 00:54:09 but even well actually oh caramia I was just talking about how I was like I know I'm not alone and wanting to like
Starting point is 00:54:32 I was always looking for a Gomez or a morticia. Yeah, I'm sure you were not alone in that. I did always think Gomez was hot. I do remember that. This is unlocking a lot of memories because, again, this was like a major part of the zeitgeist. I remember.
Starting point is 00:54:50 Oh, right, yes. It was very popular. The characters were very, like, very, like, you could pick up on everything, even if you hadn't seen the movie. Right. Amy Fisher It's nice they made a little friend
Starting point is 00:55:23 Yeah There's got to be usually at least one other not like the other boys, right? Yeah, well, that was my dream, is to find my version of this at school or camp or anywhere, my version of
Starting point is 00:55:42 Little Bernard, and I didn't. No, but I found all the other freaks, though, and we then, like, then we were just freaks. And again, I seemed to have found him as an adult. How do you think Gideon would feel about you feeling that way?
Starting point is 00:56:00 I think he would be the first one to I think if I showed him a picture of Gary Granger Right now he would be like Is that a picture of me from my childhood? Aww Oh Oh Erwin
Starting point is 00:56:26 See? Oh! No, racist counselors. Well, this is a, you know, it's the privileged camp. Yeah, no, I mean, they're actually doing it like, like the entire camp vibe, like horrific little privileged assholes is like, I think very well done. No, it's, it's why I was so terrified of going to camp. It's like, please don't make me do this. even honestly just the part about having to jump off the pier into the water, even that alone
Starting point is 00:57:07 scared me. Yeah. Yeah. For 1993, a joke about, like, white counselors not being able to pronounce the black kids name correctly is like, I feel like, you know, it's pretty good. Yeah. My kids are always complaining about they're in class with half kids who speak Spanish at home and they're always like, the teachers have no idea how to say the kids' names properly.
Starting point is 00:57:40 I'm like, that is a common thing, unfortunately. Oh, Fester. she's driven him mad with lust I mean MJ we've all been there mad with lust I mean
Starting point is 00:58:15 when then all of a sudden you come back to and you're just like wait what am I doing? Yes you are very interesting but that's not enough to keep me around totally oh yeah and like I mean again this like the idea of like being like being the family that has to go to the person and be like you have to give them back
Starting point is 00:58:34 to us it's real man that's what happens man he's dick whipped that's what happens he gets a taste of that nuss man he gets all up in that pastel noos bro that happens it's happened to all of us. We've all been done too. We've all been the Fester. We've all been the Gomez and Mortisha trying to get Fester back. Nathan Lane. Yeah, just a little role. Just a little young Nathan Lane. The passion's The passion's hostage. Oh my god, morticians just fucking slurp, man.
Starting point is 01:00:18 Mortishas just fucking slurp, slurp, slurp, man. Don't arrest Gomez. It's all, oh, don't worry, though. You know what's also wonderful about this movie? Tight 90 minutes. Oh, here it is. Well, it's the beginning of it. This is what got us here.
Starting point is 01:01:29 I just love this idea that the two of them really, like, see this summer camp as, like, their little, like, where they are the god and goddess of this land. Oh, yeah. You need to take a picture of Bernard and send it to Gideon and see if he can confirm. Oh, my God. I mean, his name is also David Krumholtz, if you just wanted to say his name. Oh, I thought his name, wait, David Krummels is the actor. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 01:02:03 The character's name is Gary Granger? No, the... Somebody else's name is Gary Granger. That's Peter Mick. Oh, okay, got it, got it. Oops. I just Now, okay, I guess question for people that did go to summer camp,
Starting point is 01:02:46 was there like an isolation room? Because I would also love to be in an isolation room. I mean, they must have like place disciplinary locations, right? But what do they do? You can't shackle them up. It's their punishment. I can't wait. I know this will already have happened by the time people hear this episode,
Starting point is 01:03:12 but I can't wait to talk about how the Pope's favorite movies are It's Wonderful Life and Sound of Music, which are also my favorite movies. Oh, that's what we didn't talk about today. We'll talk about it on Second Helpings. Oh, Annie. All right. Yes. Tim Curry.
Starting point is 01:03:29 Although, I think that if a screen is on, you know, I could just sit and watch it. If it meant that I didn't have to go swimming. I was going to say, that's the room I want to be in. That's what I mean. The musical cabin? Okay. I would read Christina Ritchie Memoir if that exists. was she did was it all bad for her i don't know that's why i'm wondering what a fascinating
Starting point is 01:04:37 you know yeah role to have as a child yeah i wonder how it shaped her Oh, he's a baby Healthy baby Oh, no He's got pastel sickness He's got pastel sickness Oh my God, I just started getting really excited because I think that they're going to start adding witches into the Sookie Stackhouse books.
Starting point is 01:05:35 Whoa. And then it's just all, you know, it's just all coming together. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we've been immersed in vampires and then we did Alvira and touched on the world of the witch. I mean, I feel this way.
Starting point is 01:06:10 You got to get faster back. pants, you know? No. Having a beige couch. Yeah. Or like a whole beige house. Yeah. Could you?
Starting point is 01:06:24 Yeah. Like normal people have? That's when you would know, you'd have to like pull me aside and be like, what's going on? Are you okay? Yeah. Yeah. No, I really, I really, even though I'm not a goth, I really like every, all of the themes of this movie a lot. like I think as a kid I couldn't see past the horror aesthetic
Starting point is 01:06:48 but actually you could take all the horror aesthetic away and it's still perfect this is such a horrific white meat and dark meat but you've always sold it as like just something that is super problematic and racist which I understand why you say that but also I'm seeing that they are doing this in a self-aware way again the joke about being not being able to say the No, it's racist.
Starting point is 01:07:14 That's what it makes in the story. Right. I thought that because it was in early 90s movies, it was just actually racist. It's racist within the movie. No, they're evil. I see. No, the privileged people are evil. That's why it's perfect.
Starting point is 01:07:30 I had no idea that they were in on the joke. Yeah, you know. my legs and put him in your mouth And this is the song I've heard you sing for 15 years and that's it and that's it and that's it and that's why it's a Thanksgiving movie. That's the only part of Thanksgiving movie. The only part that's Thanksgiving. I'll allow it. I'm fine with it.
Starting point is 01:08:12 I mean, there's not a lot of Thanksgiving movies. I know. Planes, trains, and automobiles. Oh, I mean, what are we going to watch that and just sit and cry and cry? I mean, don't get me wrong. Next year. I do. And yes, okay.
Starting point is 01:08:27 We love to cry. What do you talk about? God, I love to cry. Thank you. Fester's so sweet. Is it string? Is it a dog toy? Oh, things on the case.
Starting point is 01:09:37 He just wants to be in love. I know, he's so sweet. Oh. Wow. Yeah, but it's, I mean, it is, it's in on the joke. It's in a way that I didn't anticipate for a 1993 movie. Yeah. Hugsley.
Starting point is 01:10:43 They're all laughing. Oh, they're all laughing. Yeah, man. Brutal. Okay. Wow I think I'm going to show this to my kids I think I am going to show this to my kids.
Starting point is 01:12:07 yeah maybe i don't know yeah i mean i'm not saying it's perfect but it is uh it's true for for nineteen ninety three that is a much more humanizing uh well that's also a part of the adam's families that they're actually very inclusive and it's very yeah right burning her at the stake they're just setting it on fire which is another um this is uh that's when you know you're watching a 90s movie
Starting point is 01:12:56 you know oh yeah yeah when the kids are just like start to straight up murder people yeah and it's like well in this day and age we really shouldn't encourage this you know right right right
Starting point is 01:13:36 Hell yeah. Yeah, it's a real eat the rich scene happening right now. Kill Whitey and eat the rich. Roast them! Yes! Set it on fire. Wow. Yeah, I mean, that's certainly better than like what I was seeing at this time,
Starting point is 01:14:04 which was like Pocahontas, you know? And that's a monk, right? I think so. Are we sure those sailors want to have sex with her? They're sexually harassing her, but like in a cute way. She likes it. It's a conga line. This house. Man, what a body of work Tony Cusack has.
Starting point is 01:15:19 She's, I just, I, she's perfect. Unparalleled. I just, I want to be here. I want to kiss her. Oh, he just wants to impress her. Man, poor Fester. Henry and I do the... We do, we like quote this scene at each other.
Starting point is 01:16:06 I think because we both want to be Debbie and kiss Debbie. Help. Help. Help. Help. He made her a meatloaf. He made her a meatloaf. Are they undead?
Starting point is 01:16:43 Why can't he die? I mean, it's just cartoonish. They're just very difficult to kill. I think it's because they like it so much that they're used to being exploded and stuff like that. But they're not themselves monsters. No.
Starting point is 01:16:59 Okay. You know, in the same way that thing can drive the car, you know? Yeah. I'm asking too deep a questions over here. You just got to go. You got to go with it, you know? It's a vibe, honestly. Her vanity license plate that says Debbie.
Starting point is 01:17:29 Debbie. I got to get a vanity license plate at some point. You know I do. You don't. I'm going to say, you got to be stupid me. Well, that's a really long license plate. I think that's when I, if I move overseas, I think then you can have the long ones.
Starting point is 01:18:02 Yeah. Or do you think it would you just be soupin, like, S-O-O-P-N, me? Okay, soupin me. Yeah. Man, everyone would really wonder what that meant. I'll never forget your, you're too weird. It's such a lovely little sentiment for kids this age to see about what love can be. Yes.
Starting point is 01:18:55 Even the freaks can find love. Totally. car says Debbie Debbie too. are like winking at the camera like they're playing it so straight you know i mean to get such amazing powerhouse actors to do a schlocky 90-minute comedy is exactly it's really you know It's fun. Oh, Gomez misses his brother.
Starting point is 01:20:41 He's broken. This is what would happen to us, MJ. The suburbs. Yeah Oh, Yeah. Oh, me too. Always go back to your freaks.
Starting point is 01:21:47 He just wanted love, though. But don't worry. Is he going to find love? There are other freaks. Uh-oh, she's back, and she's even more fuckable. Oh, my God. Can it be? Also do like the assumption that they had as a family group electric chairs.
Starting point is 01:22:23 Yeah, just ready sitting in a circle. Yep. She, you know, she, you know, she just needed, she needed a little bit, I don't know, go have a margarita. I think she needs to go to Margaritaville. Yeah, she does need to go to Margaritaville. A little Jimmy Buffett in her life, I think, could go a very long way. Debbie. also really bad police work if she was having all of this proof on her you know what i mean
Starting point is 01:23:41 i feel like yeah yeah just walking around with a file of all of her murders uh puberts back to his normal self I mean, I would really be able to pull this fit off, though. I really, I got to do it. The whole role, Jackie, if they ever redo Adam Stanley Values, you're Debbie. Oh, would that I could. I'd do anything. I would hope they wouldn't try to redo it, though.
Starting point is 01:24:29 Yeah, I don't, I mean... Go in a different direction. the animated one was much more kid forward and we did enjoy it but it was not near like this is this was not what I expected at all I expected it to be much more of like a schlocky kid center comedy as opposed to how deep it is yeah that's great yeah yeah and again the animated one was good but I just didn't know I didn't know how how yeah how good you also never know with the secret Like, especially a 90s sequel, it could be like, it's, I feel like it is either fire or trash. Right. But I didn't know at the time that the Adams family, like, as a, as a franchise or as a, like, that explores these themes of, like, separation and, like, outsider, being an outsider. Oh, it goes there.
Starting point is 01:25:32 Don't hear the baby No, they would never Not pubert also at least it's always fun inventive ways that people get um well you know a weird mix of like slapstick comedy and kind of like yeah like a kind of child world of this little haunted house with like more advanced you know more deep themes it's really interesting we need more goth family media yeah we need more goth family media yeah I think I think I might have the biggest crush on Gomez, Jackie.
Starting point is 01:27:12 Right? Yeah. That makes me really happy. I do love how much they all enjoyed watching her being electrocated into dust. There's a smiling. Fuck, yeah, dude. You know, don't ask us how they do it? You know, don't ask us how they do it.
Starting point is 01:28:07 We just know they do. Oh, some love for Fester. Dementia! Dementia! Cute! 90 minutes, how tight it is. Tight, we love it. Nothing makes me happier than a 90-minute movie at this point of my life.
Starting point is 01:28:47 Dimension! Wow. Yes, I am just engrossed in the movie. Thank you for watching this not Thanksgiving movie. It's not a Thanksgiving movie, but it is so much better than I expected it to be. I'm really, that is the greatest thing to hear. That makes me. very happy
Starting point is 01:29:48 I figured as much but I don't know if I've ever like been with someone that watched this movie for the first time It's fun watching a beloved movie with someone for the first time Yeah
Starting point is 01:30:01 Wife and Psycho She even got a space in the plot It's nice Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Did you ask Gideon already? Yeah, I did, but he's having a boy night, so I don't think he, with his buddy, so I don't think he's looking at his phone. Oh, he doesn't want to answer our Bernard the elf.
Starting point is 01:30:52 Oh, this is it, though. Adam's family. There it is. Whoo. Adam's family. There it is. I remember this too. You're holding a sung this so much.
Starting point is 01:31:03 There it is. Woo! Adam's family! Wow. I won't continue trying to sing it. I will end the movie. movie here. Wow.
Starting point is 01:31:16 But thank you, everybody. Wow. What an experience. I was really, I feel, I mean, I had a blast. I hope you guys had a blast. I had a blast too. I would love to hear from you,
Starting point is 01:31:28 the listeners, especially if you're watching this on Patreon, what did this, if you had a relationship with this movie when it came out or in the 90s, what did this movie mean to you? I'm so, again, not a goth, not a goth as a kid, but I am so moved by seeing alienated kids
Starting point is 01:31:44 who hate other kids and feel and hate the outdoors and just want to be creative and weird and be by themselves. Yeah. And yes, they're haters, but like also they're in the right because these kids actually sucked, you know, and the camp was creating this toxic culture. And I'm just so, I want, I'm, I'm into it. I loved it. Thank you, Jackie.
Starting point is 01:32:07 Thank you for this experience. You're welcome. You're welcome, everybody. I hope everybody had a great time. and I hope everybody has a wonderful Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate. Yes, and remember that Christina Ritchie was saying that, you know, 1993, which is great.
Starting point is 01:32:24 Yeah. Thank you, Adams family. Yeah. Set it all on fire. Set it all on fire. Kill Whitey. Well, you know, happy Thanksgiving. Yeah, you know, yeah.
