Chapter 14 Separated
Part 4
Look, the windows are broken.
Nice observation.
Do you think those guys are up here?
I don't fucking know, Roger.
I really hope this is a joke.
What part of this would make you still think it's a joke?
None of it seems real.
Well, it is.
And I don't know who the fuck those guys are, but I don't want to find out.
I hope someone is up here.
Someone nice.
Someone normal.
Like the captain?
Yeah, or security.
Well, are we heading the right way?
I think it's that door.
It's open.
Weird?
It's not.
not just open. It's broken.
This is the bridge.
It's completely destroyed.
What did this happen?
I don't fucking know, but no one's up here, Roger. Waste of time.
Everything's wet.
What do you mean?
Look, the control board and that one. The whole thing. It's wet and busted.
Did we crash into something?
The ship almost tipped.
So, maybe.
Oh, what's going on?
I don't want to sit around and find out.
Maybe it's like that Stephen King book.
The, the L one.
The what?
It started with an L.
The, uh, the, uh, the,
Lango, something the, the Lange.
Who fucking cares?
The Langellias.
Shut it!
Keep your force down.
The book is about a group of people waking up on a plane
and seeing that all the other passengers have disappeared.
Except we didn't wake up.
True.
Oh, shit.
What?
Erica mentioned Shane was having nightmares, trouble sleeping.
Yeah?
So?
And didn't Shane mention seeing his dad?
Yeah?
Kind of weird, right?
I guess.
Wait.
Why?
You mentioned waking up, Roger.
Put it together.
Shane has been acting weird, having nightmares and seeing dead people.
You think Shane has something to do with this?
Then he mentioned some fucking fog, and look, look at it.
But we were with Shane the whole time.
You can't even see the water.
It's like we're floating through space.
Fog isn't uncommon.
But thousands of cruise ship passengers just disappearing is?
Look at everything.
This isn't fucking normal.
But how could Shane do this?
I don't know.
But I think we made the right choice in leaving them.
I don't.
What?
They're our friends, Michelle.
I feel bad.
You would rather be walking around downstairs with fucked up Bambi and friends?
No, but...
But what?
What if something happened to Shane?
And what about Erica?
That's not our problem.
What is our problem?
Roger. What's with that look?
Nothing.
Don't fucking do this.
Not now.
What is it?
I think if I fell down that elevator shaft,
you wouldn't go back for me either.
Oh, come on.
It's true.
It's not.
Yes, it is.
I am not having this discussion now,
as we float,
God knows where, on this broken-down ghost ship.
You wouldn't, though.
You believe Erica over me.
Well?
Roger? Do you?
Yes.
That's fucked up.
Well, Eric is your friend.
You're my boyfriend.
Don't think that matters.
You really think I wouldn't go back for you?
No.
Because I'm selfish.
Because you're...
You.
Okay.
Roger.
Maybe I don't know if I would.
But not because I'm here.
selfish. Because I'm scared. I don't know who those guys are, but they were covered in blood and crawling on the
ground. I know. They had weapons. I know. I don't want to die here. Something is happening on
the ship and I just want to get off. Me too, but we can't jump. We'll freeze. So then what do we
do? A lifeboat? I didn't see any lifeboats. They're not up here. They're on the main deck.
The one we were on? Yeah. They were there when the ship hit. Whatever it was. We can go back down
and get in one of those. Aren't they big? How will we get it over the side? I don't know,
but there should be inflatable ones too. The main deck. Yeah. That's where those guys were.
I know.
Fine. But let's hurry.
Okay.
And Roger, I would go back for you. Really?
Okay.
I don't know how much time had passed, but it felt like forever.
Water dripped from the ceiling landing on my forehead, sliding down the back of my head.
Through my wet, matted hair, I wanted to move out of the way, but couldn't.
Dad was gone.
although was it really dead
he denied it but who else could it be
what if cora and dale left me
what if they were attacked
what if
stop shang you're working yourself up for nothing
relax
don't panic
things are already bad
no need to make it worse
I closed my eyes and once again
hoped everything would disappear
I thought about my past nightmares.
Here I was a living one.
When I reopened my eyes, nothing had changed.
Except a shadow.
A shadow on the wall.
Dad?
Will?
No answer.
The shadow grew, getting closer.
The tall figure stood near me.
My heartbeat faster.
My head throbbed.
Who's there?
It had to be the shadow man.
What did it want?
That's when his arm slowly raised, almost pointing straight up.
I heard something.
Someone upstairs.
Movement.
Someone was definitely upstairs.
In the level above, I could hear the movement through the elevator shaft.
Oh no.
What if it was one of those dear men?
Oh, God, it was.
Where was dealing, Cora?
They had to come back.
We had to get out of here.
The light above flickered crazily, becoming a strobe light.
Please, please no, please.
Shit.
I was shrouded in darkness.
No!
What the hell?
Who was that?
Someone was upstairs.
Hey!
Hey!
Can anyone hear me?
Hey!
Sheen!
Erica!
Shane! You're alive!
Erica!
We have to go!
I couldn't believe it.
Erica was there.
On the level, just above me!
I couldn't see her.
I couldn't see anything,
not even the shadow figure on the wall.
But then the hall slowly became a faint blue.
Come on! We have to go!
Wait! No!
Some emergency lights.
come on, revealing that the shadow man had gone.
Go to the room, Shane, the room.
Erica!
It's here!
Run!
Erica!
Erica!
Shit, she was in trouble, but I couldn't do anything.
The room? Our room?
How could I get there? I couldn't even move!
And the more time that passed, the more I had the sinking feeling that I would be left here alone.
They left me.
They left me.
Shane
Cora
Cora and Dale turned the corner
Cora held up a large pipe ready to strike
Dale held a flashlight
the beam gliding over my face
causing me to squint
What the hell
What's with the shouting
I heard them upstairs
Heard who
Erica
And your girlfriend
Sky?
Are you sure?
I know what I heard.
Okay, sorry.
The power went out and you were shouting.
Thought maybe you were in trouble.
I'm not, but Eric and Skyar.
They said they were heading to the room.
What room?
I'm assuming mine and Erica's.
We have to go there.
Now.
Okay.
You have to help me.
Well, we have good news and bad news.
We found a way out.
The only problem is it's a last.
What?
All other doors are sealed.
I can't climb.
Yeah, that was the bad news.
Don't leave me here.
Dale and Corr shared a concern to look.
We're not going to.
We found a cart.
We'll wheel it over.
That'll help you get to the ladder.
But how will I get up?
We have an idea.
Dale held up a bundle of rope.
It won't be easy.
We have to hurry.
I'll get the cart.
I thought you guys left me.
No.
Thank you.
But she just gave me a cold head nod.
Here we go.
Let's get you up.
And...
The engine room is now quiet, save for the constant dripping in the intermittent creeks of the hole.
Dale and Cora had helped me on to a small cart.
My feet hung off the back.
It's so goddamn dark.
At least the floodlights help.
Until they go out, too.
Well, that's why the flashlight was a good fine.
Sure.
You're not the optimistic type, are you?
Not cheerful enough
I don't need cheerful
I just need assurance
I believe those are the same thing
Can't you at least pretend we might make it out
I don't have time for an act
As Dale pulled the cart
He glanced back at me
You doing okay there buddy
Does it matter? Can't get anything from the kid either
What do you expect
On this ship? Nothing
Well here's your hope coming up
They stopped walking and I stared up at a dark ceiling with just a bit of blue light seeping through.
Let me climb up and make sure it opens.
It better. That's our only way out.
Dale nodded and climbed up.
It seemed to be about 20 feet high.
There we go!
And he's shouting.
What an idiot.
Do you think this will work?
The rope?
It has to.
Unless you want to stay down here.
I don't.
Then it'll work.
It's open.
We see that.
Dale, hold up the rope.
Think this will work.
It'll work.
Now come on.
...toe...
...toe...
I think we made the right decision staying outside.
No shit. The power's out.
Fuck being in a dark hallway with those fucking things.
I'd rather deal with fog.
Reminds me of Silent Hill.
What is that?
A video game.
Jesus Christ, Roger.
What is wrong with you?
Nothing.
Sorry.
How much further?
Right down here.
Look.
See?
All the lifeboats are still here.
So maybe everyone really did disappear?
It doesn't make any sense.
But let's see if we can lower one of these.
These things are huge.
They have to fit a lot of people.
But did you know that cruise ships don't even have to have enough lifeboats for the passengers?
Just like 75% of them.
Less trivia and more searching.
I'm looking.
Come on. How do we lower it?
I don't know.
There must be a leave.
A lever?
Electric?
Probably.
But what about the power?
It went out.
We saw it.
Yeah, but look up there.
Flood lines.
Probably some orcs power.
Ocks?
Auxiliary.
I know what it means.
Well, there still should be enough power if we can figure out how to do it.
Then we can get out of here.
Wait, up there.
Where?
Here.
This looks like a control.
I just...
Oh, shit.
What?
It's damaged.
Like the bridge.
It looks like water damage.
I don't get it.
So, we can't get the boats lowered.
Not this one.
Where are you going?
Shit.
This one's busted too.
This is fucking great.
Maybe one of these bins out here as an inflatable raft.
That would be easier with just...
Just us too. Right?
Michelle.
What?
Wouldn't that be easier?
Sure.
Yeah.
The lock's broken on this.
Maybe we can...
Can what?
Look.
Is that an axe?
A fire axe, yeah.
Good find. Give it here.
Hey!
See if you can find another one.
For protection.
There's nothing else in here except some life jackets, rope and batteries.
Damn these things are big.
Maybe there's something on the lifeboat.
I remember during the muster drill, they mentioned an inflatable round.
You probably don't remember because you and Erica were talking, but I told you that if we...
I'm not an asshole, Roger.
I didn't say you were.
We left them to go to the navigator's deck, to get help.
I know, and no one was up there.
And because no one was up there, we came here. We have to get off the ship.
I know that. You don't have to convince me.
We can't risk our lives trying to help them.
Are you okay?
We can't.
We can't.
Michelle?
I wouldn't leave you.
If it was you down there, I wouldn't leave you.
Do you believe that?
I don't know.
Am I a bad person?
No.
But I'm a bad friend.
You're scared?
We're scared.
Yeah.
That's right.
Michelle?
Michelle?
Michelle
Fuck
What?
Forget it, Roger. Let's go.
Go where?
Let's go back inside.
Are you sure?
Yes.
Let's go help our friends.
Paralyzed.
