Chapter 15 Cold Hell
Part 1
It's coming this way.
It's coming this way.
We waited in a dark room.
The emergency lights had come
on in the hall so we could see the faint glow through the door crack. The creature was out there,
searching. Luckily for us, the door was open for us to hide in. The room had several bunks,
and I assume this is where the staff stayed. But obviously, they weren't around now.
Well, that was another close call. My palms and the knife I grip tightly were covered in sweat.
Do you think it's far enough away?
I don't know. I think it's in the hall.
We can't go that way now.
We don't need to. We just need to head back the way we came.
What if the other ones are over there?
Sky, you gotta stop. I don't have the answers.
I'm sorry.
You ready to go?
Not really.
We can't hide here forever.
I know. We're going to your room, right?
Yeah, that's what I told Shane.
You don't want to head to the engine room?
I don't know how, and with the power.
out, I, look, I just panicked, okay? I figured it would be a good meeting place. He knows where it is.
Do you think he heard you? He had to. He'll go there. But you didn't hear Cora, did you?
No, but that doesn't mean anything. Okay.
Shit. Which way? We have to go back, so, um, this way.
I was so happy to hear Shane's voice.
He had made it.
Now just to reach him.
I can't see anything.
Me either.
Even with the emergency lights, it was hard to find our way.
We turned a corner and I placed my hand on the wall to guide me.
Yeah.
What?
The wall, it's slimy.
I closed my hand and felt more than water.
It was sticky.
What the hell is happening to this ship?
Maybe we're sinking.
But how would the water get this high up without us noticing?
I don't know.
If we are sinking, we need to hurry.
We could get trapped.
Hopefully, Cora and Shane got out.
They're lower than us.
They'll find a way.
I hoped that was true.
When we reached the elevators, I stopped.
What?
One second.
I walked back to the elevator shaft and looked down.
Erica, don't shout.
I'm not. I'm listening.
Well?
I don't hear anything.
Is that good?
I have to try.
Try what?
I leaned in, unable to help myself.
Shane! Shane!
Erica, stop.
Shane! Are you there?
Anything?
I listened, but nothing.
Maybe it means they're on the way to the room.
Good. Can we go now?
Yeah, let's hurry.
We made it back to the same stairwell we had come from.
I paired up into the darkness.
Just two levels, okay?
Is it okay if I hold your shirt?
What do you mean?
So we don't get separated.
It's darker than the hallway.
But we're in the stairwell.
I know, but...
Sky.
It's fine.
She gripped the bottom of my shirt as we ascended the stairs.
I could feel her hand trembling.
She was scared.
Hell, so was I.
I peered out into the hallway.
It, uh, it looks okay.
You don't see anything?
No.
Oh, God.
What?
Hear that?
Maybe we really are sinking.
Look at the doors.
Oh, shit.
Some of them were hanging off their hinges.
Wallpaper was torn and moldy.
Some of the lights above us were cracked and busted.
It doesn't make any sense.
why everything would look like this, unless...
Unless what?
Unless the ship was underwater.
Look!
Sky tugged on my shirt.
She was peering into one of the open rooms.
She pointed to the window.
We went inside, even though we probably should have kept going to ours.
But I had to see.
The outside window over the fallen mattress was cracked.
But outside, it wasn't hard to notice the fog.
We weren't underwater.
I don't get it.
Oh no.
Let's get to the room.
Is it close?
Very.
It smells bad in here.
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Worse than the stairwell.
Here we are.
This is it.
We reached our room.
The door was still closed.
I tried the handle.
I held the knife up as we entered.
I checked the bathroom and under the bed.
I think we're good.
Sky went to the window and peered out.
I can't see anything.
What about Cora and Shane?
We'll unlock it when they get here, but I'm not taking any chances.
We're lucky the door is still intact.
The mattress is wet.
Everything is.
That's when I noticed the video camera on the ground.
I picked it up and opened the screen.
It was scratched, damaged.
I tried pressing the on button, but nothing happened.
Is that your video camera?
It's Shane's.
It doesn't work?
No, it doesn't.
I set it on the counter and sat on the bed.
Sky set next to me, really close.
What do we do now?
We wait.
...hehr...
...withal...
...withal...
...their...
Are we good?
Yeah.
Pull.
I wanted to cry.
I couldn't believe all this was actually happening.
I was actually tired.
I was actually tied to a metal grate right now, being lifted by Dale.
Coro was close behind on the ladder, holding on my leg so I didn't swing too much.
We're almost there.
What would Erica say when she saw me like this?
She said she was heading to the room.
We had to hurry.
But how could I?
The way I was.
Easy.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
One second.
We're near the top.
I couldn't see Dale, but I knew he was right above me.
All right.
I have to tie this to something, unless you can climb over.
No.
Go.
He's blocking the ladder.
One minute.
I floated there near the ceiling, near the hatch.
We're almost there, Shane.
Please don't let me fall.
Not going to happen. I got you.
Okay. I tied it around a banister, but we have to hurry. The thing looks weak.
Shit.
What?
What is it? Pull him through.
Can't. The grate is too big.
You're kidding.
I'm not.
Can we turn it?
Let me see.
No. No good.
Oh, God.
Was that what I thought it was?
We need to hurry.
Can you untie me?
We'll have to.
Cora, can you do that?
You're going to grab him?
Because I can't.
Just hold him in place for a moment.
Okay.
How's that?
She had pressed my body against the ladder.
I could see Dale leaning over me.
His upper body was leaning through the hatch.
Sorry, man.
This is how we have to do it.
It's fine.
I just won out.
This is the way.
They put his arms under my arms.
But of course, I couldn't feel it.
Okay, go.
And if you could hurry, that would be swell.
I'm going as fast as I can.
My head hung limply as they went to work.
I could just make out Cora reaching over and untieing me from my bones.
Almost there.
Do you see anything?
If you mean weird, dear people, no.
But it sounds like they're closer.
Done.
Pull him up.
Nice and easy.
There you go.
You all right?
I'm fine.
What the fuck?
Why does everything look like that?
All decrepit.
Not sure, but none of this is easily explainable, right?
Shit.
Okay, now we need to get to your room.
Cor is looking down at me as I laid on the wet floor
That's where she said she would be
That's fine
We need to head up anyway
Any idea where that noise is coming from?
No
How do we move him now?
Think we could get the grate through without him on it?
I doubt it
We need something else
Like
They walked out of ice at a moment
I'm sure they were searching for something
Just then I saw a moth
Why?
What did it mean?
Why was it here?
The moth landed on a blue light and sat unmoving.
There had to be a reason for it.
Ever since this trip began, I had seen more and more of these tiny insects.
I could hear Dale and Cora right behind me.
They were right.
The deer thing was close.
I could feel it.
The only protection we had was a pipe that Dale and Cora had found in the engine room.
Corr carried it
In case of a confrontation with the creatures
The surrounding area had a blue glow
Provided enough ample light for now
But Dale also had a flashlight
That he swung around checking each corner
Are we going to carry him the whole way?
Nah, we'll drag it
Use the rope to tie it around the doorknob and hinge
We'll have to carry him up the stairs
Don't worry about that when we get to it
Fine, hurry!
Dale focused the flashlight on the door, so you get it set.
Once they were done, they walked over to me.
All right, you ready?
I've been ready.
As they lifted me, I noticed the moth flutter away, around a corner.
They laid me atop the wet door.
Let's do this.
Cora looped the rope around my chest and stomach.
Good idea.
We'll both pull.
Now, which way?
When they angled me up, I got a good view of the hallway.
There, at the very end, stood the shadow man under a flickering blue light.
My dad told me to beware of the shadow man.
But here he was, watching over me.
That came from over there.
Then let's go this way.
As they pull me along the wet carpet,
The shadow man didn't move, but instead faded into the darkness of the hallway.
I don't know.
How long has it been?
I don't know.
How long should we wait?
I don't know, Skye.
Are you sure they know to meet us here?
I told him.
I think if he were to get out, this is where he'd come.
But not if they're stuck down there.
Which is possible.
We'll give it a little more time and then...
Then what?
Go back.
No.
What else are we supposed to do?
What if we're sinking?
But we're not.
Look.
I walked over to the window and pointed out.
Fog.
Not water.
But that thing is down there.
It almost got us.
I don't care, Sky.
It's like I told Michelle.
I'm not leaving without Shane.
Could we at least find a better weapon?
We'll give it...
What?
Erica?
What is it?
Did you hear that?
Is it that thing?
I don't know.
I ran over to the door and put my ear against it.
There's something.
in the hallway, not far.
Something?
What's something?
What does that mean?
Shh, I'm trying to listen.
Sky ran over and put her ear to the door.
I hear it.
What is it?
It doesn't sound like one of those things.
I heard a voice.
Really?
Someone's out there.
What if it's a trap?
Stay back.
Erica.
Stay back.
I held up my knife as Sky made her way back towards the bed.
I noticed the noise and stopped.
I peered out but saw only darkness.
Then suddenly, a beam of light hit my eye, momentarily blinding me.
Ah!
Holy shit! He was right. Hey man, you were right.
It's you.
Kora!
Sky pushed past me and into the hall.
Her and Kora embraced and shared a quick kiss.
I noticed they were holding up a large piece of wood.
It looked to be on Broken Door.
Holy shit! I can't believe you're here.
We went looking for you.
I heard.
Where's Shane?
I'm here, Erica.
Is he hurt?
But neither the tall guy nor Corr said a thing.
I made my way around the door to see Shane lying there, strapped down.
What the hell happened?
The man lowered the door to the ground.
Babe?
We, uh, we think he broke his neck.
I can't move anything.
Are you serious?
Oh my God.
I rubbed his arm.
I mean, are you sure? Have you tried?
I can't move.
I wiped my eyes, unable to process this.
If he couldn't move, how would we get him off the ship?
So, how are we going to get him out?
How else? Like this.
You were in the engine room?
Yeah, it was a far fall.
How are you guys all right?
I wouldn't say we're all right.
He landed badly. That's all it is.
But we got him here.
here. With your help, we'll get him the rest of the way. And judging by that sound, we need to get
out of here in a hurry. Hey, uh, is it just you two? Yeah. Michelle and Roger went to the navigation
deck. To get help. And you haven't seen anyone else on this level, have you? No, why? But the man
didn't answer. We all followed his gaze to find a mysterious figure at the end of the hallway.
Oh no. The figure took a couple of steps towards us, and that's...
when we noticed the antlers.
Shit.
Erica, what is it?
Everyone in the room.
Go! Go! The creature was on all fours now, crawling towards us.
Help me!
The tall man and I grabbed the wooden door and pulled it to the room, but it wouldn't fit.
Hurry!
We got you, Shane!
Come on! Get them in!
Here we go! Tilted more!
Watch out!
Just as you pushed the door through, the creature lunged.
I fell on top of Shane, elbowing him in the face.
Shut the door!
The creature had missed and was still outside.
I heard it crawling along the wall.
I was nearest the door, but couldn't shut it with Shane in the way.
Erica, move, move!
Shut it! I can't!
The deer had peeked her on the door job.
I kicked the door, but it wouldn't budge.
Cora, pull!
I rolled off of Shane so they could pull him back and free the room's door.
Pull!
Shut it now!
Do it!
I tried.
Now that Shane was pulled free, I kicked the door.
It swung, but the creature's antlers knocked it back.
I kicked again, but again, the creature knocked it back.
The creature lowered it.
itself onto the floor, its arms bending and twisting. None of us said his thing as the creature
closed in. Black eyes of the deer staring into my soul. Erica. Erica. I saw a pipe on the ground,
probably the one core had been carrying. Now was my chance. I lunged for it. But the creature pounced.
No! Help her! Move! Dale rushed over, but the creature slashed him across the chest.
knocking him back into coral.
I once again reached for the pipe, but the creature held my arm down, its nails digging into my
bush. But just then, the creature twitched and convulsed. The head spun around.
Blood spied from its back. Someone had hit it with something. The creature crawled off me and onto
the wall. Blood rained down on me. I closed my eyes, but I could still hear the creature crawling
around. I wiped my eyes of the blood and saw the creature crawl up to the
sealing and quickly out of the room.
That's when I noticed Michelle standing there by the door,
soaked in blood and holding an axe.
Holy shit.
Michelle?
Still think I'm an asshole?
Paralyzed.
