Chapter 2 The Kong
Part 1
After we got off the 16th.
After we got off the 160, we traveled along Sefton and then took a
left into the campground.
This place was definitely out of the way of everything.
We traveled along the dirt road towards the check-in office.
I never ended up getting a nap I needed.
Instead, I watched thousands of trees zoom past my window.
I couldn't wait to get wasted tonight.
That's right, David.
Drink your problems away.
Babe, you don't know what you're talking about.
The Duffy version is so much older.
Well, I heard it on the radio.
They played it on 103.3.
Katie and Seth's relationship was one about doing.
God, they argue about everything.
There weren't real arguments, though.
At least, most of the time, they weren't.
No, they did not.
They wouldn't play it on there.
It's old. You heard it on the Eagle. Maybe WFLV.
They said, stay with me.
Yeah, that's a new song by...
What's his name? Sam Smith.
That wasn't it. When did the Duffy version come out?
Like the 70s.
Ooh, what are we talking about?
Do you know that song, Stay With Me by Duffy?
It's an old song, right?
Yeah, 60s.
Oh, okay. See, I said 70s, but...
Seth? See, it's an old song. They wouldn't play that on a news station. It was the Sam Smith song. I don't even know how you mix those up.
I don't know. They just mentioned the song, and I was surprised it was on Q&T.
But it wasn't that song.
So whatever, it's a cover version.
No, you're such an idiot.
Seth, they're completely different songs. They just have the same title.
So like the rolling sounds and like four taps?
I'm not following.
Ain't too proud to beg.
That is a copper version.
He's being sarcastic.
I hate you, Seth.
Yeah, that's a good way to deviate from an argument, Seth.
Just throwing some sarcasm.
Oh, shut up, David. Go back to sleep.
I wasn't even asleep.
five men, looking all around me that I'm innocent.
They all say that one it will now say that they can.
Yeah, don't dream in on a cigarette of bad.
I can't believe it's gone this by.
How could this happen to what we have?
Five minutes later we finally passed the closed office building.
No one would enter the place for about another four or five months.
We drove through the parking lot and onto another dirt road.
We took a left when we got to the fork in the road.
The right led to the campsites.
We headed along the dirt road for another 15 minutes before we took our final turn around a bend.
We could see the cabin in the distance over the field of long grass.
Katie and Seth continued to play argue.
No, I'm done. I'm not arguing it was stupid.
I'm being serious.
Shut up. No, you're not. You're smirking.
Oh, nah. It's my mouth. It's twitching. I think it's the weather.
What the hell does that mean?
You know, I hate it when you guys do...
What the fuck!
The van jolted suddenly and...
Seth swerved.
We weren't going fast, and Seth was able to gain control almost instantly.
But the van tilted, right side loaded the ground.
Up ahead, I could see Brian's car break.
God, what the fuck!
We all got out of the car.
What the fuck?
What happened?
Brian, Ethan, Ashley, and Cooper joined the rest of us by the van.
Oh, fuck, man!
The van had not suffered one, but two flat tires, both on the right side.
The tires were completely done.
The back tire shredded.
We stood in the tall grass staring at this mess.
Ethan stomped on some grass to make the tires more visible.
Did you hit a root?
There's no trees around here.
Yeah, but we're not necessarily on a road.
We could have just missed what you hit.
It's hard to see anything in this field.
The grass is so high.
Of course this had to happen.
A few minutes after reaching the campground,
the silence of the car was broken up
not only by Seth and Katie's playful bickering,
but also our laughter.
It had been a full year since Jen and I had both smiled.
Smiled together.
What do you guys want to do?
Babe, do we have a spare?
And what the hell's that going to do?
I only have one.
I don't know.
Cooper took out a cigarette and lit it.
Seth Paced and the rest of us stared blankly at the flat tires.
Where's the closest mechanic?
Rutherford.
Shit.
You could call it a hub toad.
Seth, are you going to need to drive anywhere to next week?
What do you mean?
Are you going to hit up a gas station or grab food or drinks?
I thought we already had that stuff.
Seth, I think what he'd have?
Ethan's asking is, are you going to be leaving anytime soon?
Because, if not, then fuck it.
Just leave this piece of shit here.
Who cares?
Jesus Christ, we'll just say that.
I thought it was obvious.
Call someone tomorrow.
We don't have to worry about it now.
There goes my fun.
Then wait till Thursday.
No.
Then I'll just worry about it until we pack up.
I have to work next Friday.
Ah, my God, then do whatever.
Ethan threw his hands in the air and walked off.
when he passed me, he whispered.
Dude, I don't know how you do it, man.
Ethan was referring to my friendship with Seth.
Ethan and Seth used to be close,
but over the past couple years, they kind of drifted apart.
I felt like there was a reason behind it, but I don't know.
Neither of them spoke up.
Ethan had a hard time handling Seth's whiny attitude,
and here it was in full force.
Let's just leave the van here and start unpacking.
No, fuck that. I'll just pull it up to the cabin.
I don't know. You could really damage your car driving on flats.
It's only another 50 yards. I'll go slow.
No one else said anything.
Brian, Ashley, Ethan, and Cooper headed back to Brian's car,
and Jen and Katie climbed back into the van.
Seth, of course, went to the back of the van and started stomping grass.
God, I don't get it. I didn't even see anything. What the hell did I hit?
Maybe we can take Brian's car into town and get another spare.
I'm not going to worry about it now.
Okay.
We're going to be able to be.
I don't know.
I'm sorry.
We're going to be able to be.
Ryan and Seth parked the vehicles behind the two-story cabin.
We use the term cabin loosely.
It's not what you would call a traditional cabin, almost a home in the woods.
The thing has lights and water, nice furniture, and air conditioning.
While we unpacked, Seth grabbed his spare and set it against the van.
I think he was planning on changing a tire, but decided against it.
It also may have been a poy to get out of helping unpack.
I threw my bag over my shoulder and grabbed a cooler.
I headed up some wooden steps and onto the porch.
Ashley held the door open for me.
I headed inside.
The cabin consisted of a spacious living room, one bedroom, a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and an upstairs loft that was accessed by an iron spiral staircase.
I headed into the kitchen and helped Brian unload.
and drinks.
Katie came in to pull back the curtains over the sink.
That's better.
The sun was out and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
It took us about an hour to unpack and get everything situated.
Like always, everyone called their sleeping spots.
Brian and Ashley took the upstairs loft.
upstairs loft. Seth and Katie, the bedroom downstairs. Jen called one of the living room
couches, Ethan the other. Which meant Cooper and I would be on the living room floor.
Wow, that was depressing. It was only a year ago that Jen and I were showing the upstairs loft.
The
Oh,
Oh,
Oh.
Oh,
Oh.
And
After everyone got situated, we ate a very late lunch and then got a jump on partying.
For a moment, we thought about heading to the lake.
but when Seth cracked the first beer
that was it
drinks were poured
music was playing
and we all got pretty crazy
what did he said
you could not
you're not
but now
you get
you're so fucked up
but laughed
it's so bad
you said
just drug
that you
Fuck you have time
Fuck, time
Next thing I knew
It was 11
I decided it was time to change from vodka to water
Although at this point
We fucking cares
I headed into the kitchen and poured a glass
no ice
I downed it
I instantly poured another
I
Holy fuck
the room was spinning so fast
and I had to brace myself in a bar stool
Ashley came by and looked at me though
Are you okay?
Yeah?
You are not okay.
I am.
Uh-huh.
I slid to the floor and tucked my head between my legs.
My mind was trying to make sense of everything around me, but it was failing.
Cool tile floor was nice, and I decided to spread out on it.
I lay sprawled by the bar stools.
Cooper and Ethan came in and instantly started laughing at me.
Look at him.
I don't think David's feeling well.
What do you want?
What did he say?
I don't know if what I said actually made sense, but fuck it, I don't care.
I was too exhausted to form actual words.
No, I don't know him.
Come on, man.
You can't sleep on the floor?
Oh, Ethan, I called the floor.
I know you did, but let's go in the other room.
Cooper hoisted me up and led me to the living room.
Brian, Ashley, and Jen were taking shots.
Katie and Seth were making out on the couch.
Being the nice guy, I am.
I'll give you the couch.
for the night.
They plopped me down.
I said thank you.
At least I think I didn't.
I'll grab him a trash can from the bathroom.
There's no way he doesn't blow chunks tonight.
They left me to continue partying.
A few minutes later, Jen appeared with a small trash can.
I thought Cooper was getting that.
She sat down at the foot of the couch and brushed my hair from my hair from my hair.
eyes.
Aw, you are so gone.
Yeah, I am.
I could barely keep my eyes open.
Everything was just a blur.
The room started spinning again.
Jen continued to talk, but I couldn't make out what she was saying.
Yet I still answered her.
I knew I was answered.
I knew I was answering her, but I had no idea what I was saying.
The room spun faster.
I closed my eyes.
I really hope whatever we're talking about right now is...
Isn't bad.
Not embarrassing.
Then a moment later she rose and walked up.
I stared up at the ceiling.
A moth fluttered by my face.
It circled in front of the ceiling fan.
A few seconds later, it disappeared behind a blade.
I closed my eyes and drifted off.
I once
dreamed of a world
without consequences
without reminders
of this brutal gutter I am collapsed in once I dreamed.
But then I woke.
Up.
Hmm.
Fuck.
My eyes hurt when I opened them.
I just...
I had to get a
up though. I had to piss. I shifted my weight and rolled off the couch. I accidentally
kicked Ethan as I got up. Sorry, buddy. He slept on my sleeping bag on the floor. His arms and legs
twisted awkwardly. One leg was stuffed into the couch. How do you sleep like that?
I stumbled toward the bathroom.
No one was awake.
Or at least no one was up and about.
I went into the bathroom.
Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Oh.
Oh.
I'm going to
I'm going to
I walked out of the bathroom, rubbing my eyes.
I walked out of the bathroom rubbing my eyes.
The clock on the wall read 1150.
I walked back by the couch and peered into the small trash can left there for my discarded alcohol.
But it was empty.
How did I not throw up last night?
I tried to remember it, but I was drawing a blank.
I remember beer pong.
Flip cup, right?
Dancing with Ashley.
I remember.
laughing at Seth because he spilled beer on himself.
Oh, and Katie.
I remember...
Oh, fuck.
I remember talking to Jen.
Well, I hope that went well.
Through a window I could see Cooper smoking on the front porch.
He leaned over the railing, staring out into the woods.
I thought about going to talk to him, but...
a bit more, felt like a better idea.
I plopped back down on the couch and laid back.
Surprisingly, I wasn't that tired.
Wait, how was that possible?
And then I realized
there's no bad dreams.
No nightmares.
No paralysis.
Well, I couldn't believe it.
Maybe it was the alcohol.
Maybe it was the trip.
Honestly, I couldn't care less.
For the first time in a long time, I was actually happy.
Why would I question that?
And just then, the moth appeared, fluttering about.
It landed on my hand.
I didn't kill it.
I didn't even shake it off.
I just stared at it.
Didn't move.
That's when my happiness subsided.
I'm not sure why, but I didn't feel right.
