Chapter 2
The Kong
Part 2
I couldn't shake this uneasy feeling I had.
It was weird.
I had a restful sleep, and I really didn't have a hangover.
Yet, something was there.
As I walked out of the cabin, I scanned the woods.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Cooper was outside smoking a cigarette and reading his Kindle.
I'm surprised you're the first one up.
I sat down across from him at the picnic table.
How do you feel?
Not too bad.
No dropping headache?
No.
You drank a lot
Yeah, I know I did
I don't really remember much
I believe that
What about you man
You feel okay
Yeah but I didn't drink nearly as much as you
Or Seth
Or even Katie
Cooper was a nice guy
Quiet, reserved
Although if you ever
talked to him about music he could get
quite animated and loud
His passion was music
He was in a band for a few years playing local venues, that is until their lead singer moved to Spain to pursue other goals.
I met Cooper and Jim in middle school.
Ethan and I became close friends with Cooper when he invited us to some benefit where Tom Petty was playing.
He loved classic rock and so did we.
He took another puff from a cigarette.
You think the rest of the group will be up for much later?
I think everyone will be sleeping for a while.
I'm not really sure why you asked that, seeing as he's not a very active guy.
I mean, even if we all did go swimming or perhaps play football, I'm sure he would just sit on the side and watch.
I don't know.
I'd like to go swimming, but we'll see how everyone else feels.
Looks like someone else is up.
I turned around and see Jen walk by the open window.
She headed towards the bathroom.
Do you know if Jen was drunk last night?
She didn't seem that bad.
She helped put Katie and Seth to bed.
They could barely walk.
Great.
What?
It's just that before I passed out, I think we talked, and...
I can't remember what it was about.
Dick, you said something you shouldn't have?
I have no idea.
You could ask her.
Or I could just avoid the situation.
That's an option, too.
Cooper grinned and took another puff off in a cigarette.
You know,
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
You know,
Around two, everyone was awake.
Seth was last to get up,
and I don't think it was until 2.30 when his eyes fully opened.
Katie, Seth, and even Brian were not feeling the best,
but we still planned on going swimming.
Everyone changed and grabbed towels.
Cooper grabbed a small cooler,
filled up with a few beers and we headed on down to the trail.
The dirt trail winded its way through the forest.
The only sound, foot flops banging on the bottom of the feet.
It was a good 20 minutes before we reached the lake.
The woods opened up to reveal a football field-sized lake.
Water splashed as fish jumped and dragonflies buzz wildly in all directions.
A crane took flight when we got close.
The lake was surrounded by rock ledges and saw grass.
I do not want to swim here.
I told you, babe. It's man-made.
Brian was right.
The lake was built way before Ethan's uncle ever bought the property.
It was built as a training area for scuba divers, and that was its main draw to this day.
Nature had turned it from a crystal blue to a dull brown.
So no alligators? Are you sure?
They trained scuba divers here. It would be bad for business if there were alligators.
Don't worry, Ashley. There's another lake river swamp around here for miles.
Alligators wouldn't be able to travel to the woods to get here.
We set our stuff by a picnic table set on a slab of concrete.
The thing was broken and a piece of it was hanging off.
Rodded.
There could be snakes.
That there could be.
They're more scared of you than you are of them.
People say that about every animal.
Oh, well.
Seth ran to the edge of the lake and jumped.
How deep is it?
It can be 40 feet deep in some areas, whose bill over a dried-up spring.
There's actually a sunken boat at the bottom in the deepest part.
A real boat?
Yeah, but not really sunken.
They put it there for the scuba divers, right?
Just something for them to explore.
Oh.
How's the water, babe?
Warm.
I'm going to be able to be.
I'm going to be.
We all right.
We swam around for about a good two hours.
We swam around for about a good two hours.
Cooper sat at the picnic table reading his Kindle and drinking beer.
Katie slid out of Seth's arms and swam to the edge of the lake.
She climbed on a large rock and picked up a pebble from the dirt.
She tossed it at Cooper.
It skipped along the picnic table and then to the ground.
Coupe.
What's up?
You have any food in that thing?
Just beer.
Ah, I'm getting hungry.
Hey, you guys ready to head back?
I could grill something up.
Yes, let's do it.
You ready, babe?
Mm-mm. Not yet.
Well, it'll take me a while to prepare everything.
I'll head back now.
Good. Let's stay for a little bit longer.
We'll meet you back at the cabin.
All right, sounds good.
Ethan, Katie, Seth and Cooper packed up their stuff and headed back to the cabin,
cabin, leaving the rest of us behind.
I dove under the water.
Diving deep to where the cool water soothed my warm skin.
I knew I'd have a sunburn tomorrow.
When I came back up,
Ashley was in Brian's arms.
Jen had climbed onto a large collection of rocks and laid out,
taking in the sun that was slowly disappearing over the tree line.
You seem to be feeling a lot better.
Yeah, I actually got a good night's rest.
How do you like the new job?
I know it's been something you've been working towards a long time.
What do you do?
I, um, manage an online marketing company.
Nice.
That's got to pay well.
Yeah.
Okay. I'm ready if you guys are. It's been about 20 minutes.
know what Ethan's making.
I don't care. I'm just hungry.
Ashley and Brian climbed out of the water
and grabbed their stuff from the table.
Ashley threw a white tank top on over her bathing suit.
Jen, you ready?
Jen hadn't moved from her resting spot.
Her body was dry. The rock around her, wet.
Okay.
David, you coming?
No, I'll stick around, too.
All right.
Brian and Ashley took off down the dirt path.
I turned and waited in the water.
I don't know that Jen knew I had stayed back.
It had been quiet.
I decided to make my presence known.
I splashed a bit, then dove under the water.
When I came back up, Jen had moved on to her side.
She looked at me.
I thought you left with them.
No?
Oh.
She sat up and stretched her arms.
The sun continued its descent over the wood line.
You didn't have to stay.
I wasn't ready to go yet.
She slid into the water slowly and came towards me.
We waited next to each other.
I was feeling the awkwardness.
We needed to talk.
I couldn't handle the silence.
But I needed a subject.
I looked down at the water.
I think that boat that sank is right below us.
David, is there something you want to talk about besides where the sunken boat is?
No, why?
I feel that there is.
Jen, did you just hear that?
David, is there something you want to tell me?
No.
Then why did you stay back?
I don't know.
to hang out.
I don't believe that.
Jen, like always, you're fishing.
I didn't bring a pole.
She gave me a smirk as she waited past me.
You know what I meant.
You want me to bring up something.
Only if you want to talk.
All right. Fine.
What did I say last night?
When?
Come on, Jen.
I remember you coming to talk to me on the couch.
But quite honestly, I just don't remember what I said.
Another rustle in the woods.
I turned to the woodline, but couldn't see anything.
Maybe it was a squirrel or a raccoon, but nothing was in sight.
That's interesting.
What did you say?
What did you say?
We talked about a few things.
You mentioned your past relationship with me.
Megan. Although that didn't last long.
You talked about how annoying it was you couldn't get a good night's rest.
You know, bad dreams and all that.
You also said you had a secret about work.
But you didn't reveal it.
Okay.
Right away.
Jen, why are you fucking with me?
Why didn't you tell me you got fired from I&L?
The way she said it made my stomach sink
She didn't smirk or grin
In fact, I could see the hurt in her eyes
I didn't tell many people
I know
I heard you talking to Brian and Ashley
But me?
Jen, we're broken up
We don't we don't talk anymore
Hey, don't blame me for that
I'm not
It's just you wanted a reason
and that's the reason
how
wait
why
tell me what happened
Jen
talk to me
I just
I don't want to talk about it
fine
we won't
but there's one thing
you mentioned last night
what did I say
you miss me
She swam for the shore and climbed out.
She went to the picnic table and grabbed her towel.
I dumped my head under water.
I wanted to hide.
I wanted to...
Disappear.
Fuck.
I did not.
miss her. But I didn't need her to know that. There was no way we would ever get back together
and for her to know my feelings it, it was painful. When I came back up, I saw a Jen drying her hair.
When she finished, she swung her hair up and over her shoulders. And then she stopped
moving, and her eyes fixated on the woodline.
She yelled, and I followed her gaze to find a man coming out of the woods.
Oh my God.
And he held an axe.
Jen! Run!
