Chapter 22
Escaping demons
Part 2
Wait, so what happened?
It's been a very long day.
But Captain...
Eric, just call me Eric, Ray.
What did you say? What happened?
I told you, I wasn't sure what exactly would come about.
I just wanted to take some precautions.
It was time
It didn't have to do with you getting my stuff
You didn't mention this to her, did you cap?
I mean, I mean, Eric.
No, no, don't worry, it's not about that.
Is it about work?
About my case?
About Roland?
No.
But you mentioned Kent.
Is it about him?
Yes, but in a different manner.
I'm so confused.
I know.
I, um, I'll be flying back tomorrow morning. I'm staying here one more night.
I looked up at the building behind me. I could see Jake standing by the window looking down at me from two floors up.
Could he hear me? No, there was no way.
That's fine, Ray. I have some stuff to take care of in the morning and a meeting at noon.
After that, I'll free up some time. Are you coming in tomorrow?
Uh, no, I wasn't planning on it.
Unless Moore needs me to...
More's fine.
Okay, then no.
But I want to talk to you.
We'll talk.
I'll call you after my meeting.
Okay.
Um...
I'm sorry, Eric.
I'm sorry that this happened.
I hope you're able to solve it, to fix it, whatever it is.
I'll explain more tomorrow.
Good night, Ray.
Night.
The captain had called to let me know.
he got my stuff and Casper, but then he dropped a bombshell. Him and Samantha had decided to
split. He mentioned Kent, but he wouldn't go into details, and I wasn't sure why not.
How could it not have anything to do with Roland's search? I looked back up at the room,
but Jake was gone from the window. We decided to get a hotel room for the night,
although I had a feeling this would be just a way for him to make a move.
no matter how much she denied it.
Before heading back up, I decided to call Lori to check on Mom.
Hey.
I could hear dogs in the background.
Are you home right now?
I had to come home to feed the dogs.
Oh.
Any updates on Mom?
She needs surgery.
Shit.
Yep.
And they're going to perform it tomorrow, because Mom is still in.
too much pain and unable to move without tears sliding down her face.
They don't think medication will be enough.
Oh.
So I figure if you're done with your stuff and I can stay with mom tonight and you can feed
the dogs in the morning, or if you want, you can stay with her and I'll...
No, I can't. I booked a flight for tomorrow morning. I was calling to tell you that.
Now?
Yeah.
Lorry?
You know, you promised to help out more.
I've flown up multiple times.
What happened to her moving down with you?
She didn't want to. I told you, I asked, years ago.
Mom told me she didn't want to be a burden.
She wouldn't have been.
You could have told her that.
I did.
Oh, please. You never wanted Mom to move down because of how much of a hassle she is.
Can we not do this right now?
No, no, you're right. Let's put it off longer.
I don't have time for this. I have to get back. I've already taken up enough time.
But when you're here, you're not even here.
It's not my fault you never moved.
I wanted to, but with Mom and Craig...
You can't blame me for that asshole. You chose to marry him.
You know, I'm not asking you to be Mom's stay-at-home nurse.
I just think it would be nice if you could stay around a little while
more than a couple days at a time
maybe fly up a few weekends here and there
I have and mom was perfectly capable to manage on her own
she had three bad balls in two years
that's okay with you
what else do you want for me Lori
I can't move back up I have a life
oh yeah a whole cat
what a life
seriously
I'm a detective. I have cases. I can't, and I don't want to leave all that behind,
and I can't just take vacations whenever I feel like it. Sadly, I didn't get divorced and get half
my husband's money so I could be a glorified dog walker. Wow. Hey, your claws were already out.
Lori, these last two trips weren't easy.
I have a lot going on way more than you could ever realize.
Although I would keep my other activities to myself.
Yeah, I'm sure it's real hard to come up here, visit mom for a few hours, and then drive south to fucking ex-boyfriend.
I'm going to go.
Good.
When's the surgery?
Why?
You're going to tell me or not?
5 p.m. at the doctor confederin tomorrow.
They think it'll be a complicated surgery because of how Warner cartilage is, so it's possible it'll take up to 3.000.
three hours. All right, tell mom she's going to be okay, and I'll call her tomorrow
night if she's up for it. Sure. You gonna tell her? Yeah, I'll tell her. Bye, Willow.
Lori hung up on me, but it took a moment before I dropped the phone from my ear.
I couldn't believe Laurie was giving me this much grief.
If she only knew.
I couldn't help that mom never wanted to move down.
She told me she wanted to.
I remember having coffee with her the morning before I moved myself.
How she said she wouldn't be far behind.
She loved Florida and moving there when you were old was what you did.
But for whatever reason, she decided against it.
The years passed and she didn't come down.
When I asked her again, two years later, she said she was still thinking about it.
But once Craig and Lori were married, I knew it wasn't going to happen.
Because Mom stayed up here for her, to protect her.
And that was something I couldn't tell Lori.
I remembered that talk over the phone with Mom after Lori's first year of marriage.
He's no good for her, Mom said.
He treats her like shit, berates her, calls her names, and no matter how much.
I talked since, she won't leave him. Which was probably true. He was an asshole. Craig even blamed
Lori for not being able to have kids. Their marriage was a mess from the start. And by the time
Lori did finally leave him, Mom was older, and I think she didn't want to move anymore. The time had
passed. Jake was on his laptop now, typing away. I sat on the closest bed while he finished up.
Hey, you okay?
Just assume from here on out, the answer is no.
Anything?
Just movement in the woods across the street.
What about the office?
I haven't seen anyone.
Maybe they plan to just stay in Mayer's room.
Forever?
Do we really need their attention?
We can't hang around much longer.
I didn't break my focus at the moving brush.
I knew the creature stirred.
Give them five more minutes.
I wanted to see if we could get Mayor and Michelle's attention
since we'd have to move fast.
Fine.
Five more minutes.
Then we go regardless.
Fine.
And you're going to help me.
Me? Why me? Why can't that guy fucking help?
Because I'm going to my car.
Milo was adamant about getting to his car.
While I thought that was a bad idea, I was done trying to explain.
This is such bullshit. I don't owe you guys anything.
I don't know what your fucking problem is, but you're helping.
We get Mick into your truck and then we go.
After you drop those two off at the office, you take us to the nearest hospital.
Then you could fuck right off
That was the new plan
Bridget and I would jump out
Get Michelle, Mayor, Brody, and Hal
And get out
This way we didn't have to move Torv's partner twice
And there'd be plenty of room
Regina
Maybe you should
Leave me
No
Hey if he wants
Shut the hell up
Or I'll shoot you and take your fucking
truck. The special agent was starting to lose it, but I needed her to keep her cool just a little while
longer. Hey, hey, look. That's a mayor. Bridget started banging on the glass, but Mayor didn't look
our way. She went to the water cooler. Oh, come on, Mayor. Over here. Look over here. Does this
really matter? Once you guys are over there, can't you just help them to their vehicles? We're not going to
have a lot of time once we leave. Trust me. Come on, Mayor. Come on. Come on.
You know,
It was late.
I was trying my hardest to take my mind off things.
I laid in my bed watching some reality show while Jake continued to work on his computer.
Holy shit.
What?
I have access to all the Robards reports, everything he sent to Walker.
Really? What about Torv?
Uh, I don't know.
I've been using Robards information because he knows Ansela and it seems more realistic that he would ask for my involvement.
I don't know anything about Torv.
and from what I've read in office emails,
she can be a bit of a hothead and very determined.
Are you serious?
What?
That's what you say for any professional woman.
What are you talking about?
I went over to Jake and leaned over to him to peer at the screen.
Determined is just code for bitch.
That's not true.
And even if it were, it's not like I think that about every female agent.
I've heard you use that coded term a couple of times.
But not all the time.
Sure, maybe not for Amelia.
His head snapped to the side as he faced me, biting his lip.
Now, Ray, relax.
First off, don't tell me to relax.
I stood up straight, adjusting my tank top.
And secondly, I don't care, Jake.
I saw the wine glasses and I saw the earrings.
Yeah, but...
And I heard Ansel over the phone.
You need to be a little quicker on your draw.
I can explain.
I don't give a shit.
Yeah, but nothing happened.
Jake, I don't want to hear any bullshit.
It's not!
Just focus on the task at hand.
I am.
Leave more breadcrumbs?
I sent a few things to CID and even dropped Ansel's name a few times.
I'm sure he'll love that.
mere mentions. I need this shit everywhere, and it is. My involvement is all over the place with the proper data reports associated, and I'll be able to do even more work when I go in tomorrow. But...
But what? Well, I got sidetracked.
He motioned to his laptop. Okay, so the reports, anything useful?
Could be.
Jake stood in motioned for me to take a seat.
Such a gentleman
Hey, Amelia and I did not
Fuck
I was caught off guard
By his outburst
It seemed like it was
Eating away at him
I'm telling you we didn't
I don't care about that
Really
But did she see this
See what you were working on
You had books and files
sprawled out at your place
His mouth parted slightly
As if he wanted to answer
But was waiting on the right one
To leave his lips
Uh
Uh, Jake.
No, she came over real quick to look over some other reports, and we were just talking.
She recently broke up with her boyfriend and...
Jake!
Nothing happened. You called and I left. That's the truth.
I didn't quite believe him, but I didn't want to question him any further.
I couldn't be a hypocrite, as I planned to meet with the captain, or Eric, tomorrow.
Can we just look through the reports?
Please.
Jake grabbed the other chair from the table at the end of the room and brought it over.
Okay, look at this one.
This was dated January 15th.
It's the first day they took over the case.
They were assigned later?
Yeah, I'm assuming after the interviews with Julia.
Why?
Because she talked about David.
But they had another agent involved beforehand?
There's mention of another agent who was just there to assist in the aftermath.
Does that make sense?
It happens, and I'm just going off the dates in chronological order.
Do you know who?
who the other agent was?
No, I didn't see a name, but I can look into it.
Do you have access to the interviews?
Julia's interviews?
Yeah.
Uh, I can get them.
As for David.
I've seen David's.
All of them?
I believe so.
Okay, well, it looks like after Julia's first chat with the cops, Robots was assigned,
and he wanted to team up with Torf.
He scrolled through the report that was locked.
I skimmed through.
This was sent to the S.A.
see. Right at the robots took over.
Wait, they wouldn't assign
two field agents automatically?
They only do it if they deem it necessary.
Most agents alone operatives, but it probably
helped that he specifically requested
Torf. Maybe he has
a little thing for her, huh?
I made a face, then went back to reading...
Who's Hubert?
A local detective.
Not an agent?
No, that's the detective that was watching
over Julia, checking in,
even after she moved.
Oh, that's right. You've talked to him.
Yeah.
Nice guy?
Seemed like it. He seemed torn up after Julia took her own life.
Jake continued to scroll.
This here shows Torv and Robards eventually talk to Julia themselves.
I continued reading. They talked to her several times over the phone, too.
Looks like they weren't so concerned with her well-being as much as just trying to find Roland.
Yeah.
You good?
With what?
I just wanted to know if you were done reading so I could scroll down more.
I was done 30 seconds ago.
Yeah, okay.
How many pages is this report?
He moved the cursor, hovered over the bottom tab.
Looks like 13 pages.
Jesus.
And this is just the first one.
Can we get access to them all?
Sure, I got access to his emails.
To forward some of this to both cyber and yourself
Sure, he's got several requests that were already sent to cyber
I'm just adding my name to a couple
If you change anything, won't they be able to track the dates?
Not if I go into the HTML code and change it
It'll be a sense to redate
What if they saved the documents to their computers?
They wouldn't, now with this stuff
Now with dedicated reports, that shit stays in the service
So you say
So I hope
Jesus
I took the mouse from Jake's hand
and scrolled further
Hmm
What
This is all from the first month
I believe so
Why
Just wondering if there was anything earlier
Possibly but maybe just not email to the SAC
From Robards
Maybe but I told you
I'll look into the first agent was on site
Has to be another Bostonian
Whoa, whoa, whoa, back up.
What?
Scroll back up.
More.
There, right there.
What?
The thing about Sefton Trust.
He pointed to the screen, and the report Robards mentioned Patricia Sanders in watching the David interviews.
The body was never recovered.
I already knew that.
So did you.
The bodies were stolen on their way to Port Charlotte for burial.
Or so was thought, until.
Roland saw Sanders in the woods at the campsite the night Kent disappeared i continued reading robards made
mention that he wanted permission to search theft and trust's grave oh yeah seems like they were willing to hear julia out
was there a response from the sAC sure was jake took the mouse for me and a few clicks later a response email was on the
screen short and sweet denied yeah looks like it Walker the special agent in charge denied
Robard's request there was skepticism from Roland's recount and Julia's initial interview
while it was believed that Sanders body was stolen along with the other family members
no one believed she was the woman in the woods you know she got put on leave not long
after that.
Roland?
Yeah, after she told everyone
that's who she saw.
Well, it is a hard pill to swallow.
I read the last couple sentences
from the SAC that said
permission was denied unless
Philip Kent could be located
and confirm Roland's story.
That's kind of weird.
What? That they wouldn't want to desecrate a
gravesite? Yeah, I mean
I get not believing the fucker is walking around
in the doll mask, murdering people,
posthumously, but I wouldn't discount grave robbers, especially after Sanders goes missing.
But it's a completely different area, a completely different state.
Still, both people were mentioned by Julia.
I'm not sure how it works in the FBI.
Well, either Walker had no faith in the connection, which is odd because Summers and Roland were involved in both,
or he was using that as a means to find Kent, stat.
Kent was a carrot?
And Torven Robards were donkeys.
Jake went back and pulled up another emailed report to Walker, the next in line, after sifting
through many other emails.
We went through the other reports that were sent to the SAC.
Jake took notes, even though he planned to forward many of these emails.
What?
They talked to Kent's boyfriend.
Yeah, I saw that.
ex-boyfriend.
Well, X because Kent disappeared.
Wait, what's the date?
This wasn't that long ago.
He moved and was trying to change his name a year later.
Why?
I shrugged while Jake took more notes.
Maybe Kent wasn't an easy man to live with.
Not funny.
Always a critic.
I just mean maybe PJ here was worried about Kent finding him.
Maybe they had an abusive relationship.
relationship. Or maybe he was just worried about being associated with all the craziness.
The guy ran out. What does he expect if the shit like this happens? I took the mouse and
scrolled a bit. You know, we're getting a lot of good stuff here. Yeah. Why didn't you do this
before? Before Roland's train tracks fiasco? I scoured at him. Because I like to only do this as a last
resort. Is that so? Why do you say that? What got you kicked out of the field? His mouth twisted.
Listen, I made a mistake. I used my expertise to gain some knowledge on someone else's active case
when I was explicitly told to stay away from. Why? Because it wasn't mine. No, why did you do it? Because I wanted
to prove the cases were linked. You couldn't just talk to someone? No, not really. I gave
him a quizzical look, but he just shook his head. It's true, so I did it my way. But then you got
caught and Daddy bailed you out. That's what everyone believes. It's not true? No, that had very
little to do with it. But he did help. He helped Joyce with a new perspective. What does that mean?
He leaned back in his chair, ran a hand through his hair. I found some incriminating info on a few of the
higher-ups.
I can't say
Seriously
He turned to me
Straight-faced
Seriously
I signed paperwork
In NDA
There was a lot of position shifting
After that
Some higher-ups were forced to retire
Earlier than planned
And others in charge
It felt like they had to reprimand me
So I was moved
To cyber
They hated me
But wanted my expertise
Hmm
Must have been something big
It was
Something that could crumble the division
I don't think anything could necessarily do that, but it would have hurt a lot of reputations.
Within the FBI.
Oh, no. A lot of places.
It was outside, too?
The chief of staff, deputy director, the inspector, the inspector, general, the CIA, a few politicians, and so on.
I know you can't say, but damn, what the hell was it?
Some bad people covering up some bad things.
Can't believe you signed an NDA.
I had to if I wanted to keep my job, or a job.
Then, are you so sure you want to be doing this?
This? Sure.
As long as my father's alive, I'm immune.
I thought you said he had little to do with helping you.
Little to do with helping me keep a job.
A lot to do with helping keep me alive.
I hope you're joking.
He forced a smile, then went back to taking notes.
Listen, don't you worry about it.
me and a few days will be well past the hot pot and everything will be left up the chance so right now
i'm going to finish taking down whatever i can to send it off with you he motioned to the shopping bag
sitting by the door we stopped out a walmart on the way here and picked up an external hard drive
after i give you this i'll make a copy myself and then reset my computer everything else from now on
will be through my office computer okay just remember that hey stop
What was that?
What?
Scroll up, scroll up.
Yeah, right there.
It's just more about PJ.
No, after that.
They mentioned Washington.
Yeah, they flew out.
Go to the next email.
If there is one.
Hmm.
Here.
They found her phone.
Yeah, we already knew that.
No, wait.
He was about to close the phone.
the email. I'm just seeing how much they found, how much they know. They probably know more
now. They've had more time with all this shit. Although...
What? Hmm. What, Jake? They asked the judge to sign off on searching the phone records.
Yeah, so? That's protocol. Why did Walker push it back? This is right after they found out it was
Roland's car on the train tracks. He was right. I quickly scanned the paragraph.
Yeah, you'd think they'd be gung-ho, but maybe he knew getting a warrant is a chore.
For this, it shouldn't be.
They wouldn't have to worry about jurisdiction, and this is someone at the top of the FBI list.
That is weird.
Seems like Walker had a lot of issues along the way.
A lot of hesitations.
Is there any way you can look at his emails?
Of course, but, uh, maybe I should do that alone.
Why?
Because we already have a lot here, and, uh,
If something happens, I have a better chance of bouncing back than you do.
Even with all those higher-ups knowing you know something?
Listen, that shit happens more often than you think.
There's enough shadiness in the agencies and political establishment
to keep every American out of the know for decades.
He was probably right.
I was already in deep.
No need to dig deeper.
Just let me take all this down.
He copied and pasted the section about Roland on the train tracks.
You know, Roland said she saw Kent.
She also said she saw David in Alaska.
The fucker was directing her.
But David's dead. We don't know about Kent.
If she's seeing him, I think it's safe to assume.
He turned to me.
Half his face covered in the screenlight.
You ever think she left Kent to die?
No, not on purpose.
But she ran off.
And lost track of him in the woods.
Sometimes it's hard for me to believe.
She just ran and somehow escaped.
She got out, but he didn't.
She was lucky, like David, Julia, Elliot Benson, and Michelle.
Sure.
What?
It's just funny.
What is?
Everything I know about Roland?
Everything you've told me?
Isn't that how she's avoided so much in her life?
What are you talking about?
Running away.
She's constantly running.
from things. Responsibilities, law enforcement, monsters, motherhood.
Stop. I'm right.
It's helped her survive.
If you say so.
If I'd experienced everything she did, I would do the same.
You'd run?
I'd have to.
So, I'm going to be able to be.
Oh my God, will you stop?
No, she sees me!
She does?
Good. It's been way past five minutes. We need to go.
Finally!
Signal to her that we're coming over there.
How?
Try pointing to the cars.
Okay.
I walked over to Torv. Do you want me to take your gun?
What? What for?
You're going to have your hands.
hands full with him, I motioned to her partner, Mick Robards, unless you want me to carry him.
Why don't you two carry him so I can get in the truck easier?
No, you're helping me because I don't trust you.
What?
You're liable to drive off before we can all climb in.
You obviously don't want to give me the gun, and why would you?
So, let me carry him, and you give us cover, okay?
She seemed unsure, but finally relented, nodding in agreement.
Okay, I think she understands.
You point to the cars?
Yeah, and to the office. She ran back. Hopefully that other guy's still alive.
He is. Bridget gave me a weird look before turning to Milo, who was once again nervously cleaning his glasses.
Are you really going to go for your car?
I have to.
We really should all travel together.
I get that, but, uh, I think I can make it.
He just wants us to be bait. No. Sure, buddy.
Just shut up and grab his legs.
I motioned to Robards.
Be careful with him.
We will.
Now remember, everyone, the moment that door opens, we move fast.
We run to the truck, get to the other end of the parking lot,
and get Michelle and the others into your car, Bridget.
Okay.
You guys take off the moment we get out.
What if you need cover?
Don't wait for us.
Just go and get them to a hospital.
Her eyes softened.
Okay.
Everyone else good.
The rest of them nodded.
Run. Got it.
Just get his legs.
We lifted Robards off the bed.
I got him.
Wait.
But then I saw him grab his phone, which was under Robards.
Seriously?
I'm ready.
We carried him over to the door.
I don't see Mayor of Brody.
It's okay.
We'll get them.
They know, right?
Yeah, yeah.
I was just hoping they'd get my keys.
But you know where they are, right?
Yes.
Then, we're fine.
Ready?
I looked to the wood line, but now there was no movement.
I looked back towards a bathroom where Kent stood by the sink.
A large grin was the only thing I could see with the rest of his face obscured by shadow.
A chill ran through me.
Roland, ready?
Do it.
She took a quick breath, flung open the door, and we ran.
