Chapter 4
Those that survive
Part 1
We're going to be able to be.
THEIRMANILEEN SULLIVAN LAND WHERE THEIRMANILEEN SULLIVAN.
What did you see, David?
What did you see?
What's going on?
I go into the bedroom, and I see him staring out the window, and now he says he has to go.
Go?
David, what the hell is out there? What are you staring at?
What the hell does that mean?
Is he coming this way?
No.
I think it's going after Ethan and Jen.
Fucking hell, man!
What is it?
What the hell did you see out there?
How could I explain what it was to them?
This thing was unimaginable.
For me, it was a nightmare.
The creature had stood in the field behind the cabin.
staring right at me.
Then it turned and headed for the dirt road.
Going right for Ethan and Jen.
Well, I don't have time to explain.
You can't be thinking about leaving.
I can do something.
What? They have an axe.
All we have is kitchen knives.
Seth hobbled in front of me.
He used a broom as a crutch.
Uh...
David, please.
Who is out there?
It's not a who. It's a what?
A creature.
I...
I can't describe it.
It.
Fuck that.
Do your best.
You know the nightmares I've been having?
Yeah.
Well, this is one of them.
What the hell are you talking about?
David, are you okay?
I'm fine, Katie.
And I don't mean that this is a literal
I...
I mean that that thing I saw out there was...
I am so fucking confused.
Seth plopped onto the couch.
The couch was the only thing left in the room that wasn't blocking a window or a door.
All I'm trying to find out is what the hell killed Cooper.
And I'm telling you...
It was a creature.
Bigfoot...
Seth, stop.
I'm not joking. What kind of creature?
Something from your dreams? What does that mean?
Shadowman. Ethan mentioned you seeing dark shadows.
No, that's... that's different.
For fuck sakes.
David, why do you think this is a nightmare?
Because I've dreamt this.
This is real.
Yeah, I know that.
But I've dreamt this.
Like, right here.
Now, what's happening?
A camping trip?
This camping trip.
Then what happens?
When?
Now.
Right now.
What happens next?
It doesn't work like that.
Seth, you're being ridiculous.
I am?
That's a legitimate question.
What happens now?
Did you dream this?
No.
What did you dream?
The night Cooper died.
Running through the woods.
The creature.
Brian, Ashley?
No, just that everyone was gone.
Except for you.
Well, it was my dream.
Is that all?
just the camping trip
I leaned against the wall
the nightmares started months ago
Seth knows
you always looked like shit
I couldn't shake it
I went to the doctor
he said the same thing everyone else is saying
stress
but I'm sure Seth told you
I was let go from I and L
I didn't tell her
Yes, he did
Go on
I thought the stress would subside
And it didn't
And then this camping trip happened
Oh shit, the car
You heard something on the radio
Oh right, what was that?
Screams
A woman
The nightmares kept
Me
The nightmares
The nightmares kept coming
until the first night here
That night
I had nothing
No dreams
that I could remember really. I slept fine, but the radio in the car, that was different.
That wasn't a dream. And neither was the shadow figure in the campsite.
What shadow figure?
Goose bumps ran down my arm. Katie seemed to get them too. She rubbed her arms and looked
looked around the room.
The shadow figure I've been seeing in my nightmares.
I felt, I mean, it seemed like things were outside my mind.
Outside the nightmares.
You know how insane this sounds, right?
Shut up, Seth.
I want to know what's going on.
Yeah, so do I, but this isn't it.
You asked me, Seth, and I'm telling you,
what's out there isn't a man.
It's a creature, we get it.
But what you're saying is that this whole thing is because of you.
What?
David, think.
How do we make it out of here?
I don't remember my dreams they were just like portions.
I only remember parts.
How many dreams of the camping trip?
Several.
That I can remember.
what does that creature want with us i don't know did it kill ashley i don't know what about brian i really don't know
bullshit you know what's going on here you have this whole epiphany but yet you can't answer the most
important questions because i don't have the answers i don't know why the nightmares came and i don't
know why they stopped maybe it's this place it can't be
We've been coming here for years.
Nothing like this has ever happened.
What happens to Ethan and Jen?
What do you mean? I don't know.
Bullshit!
Seth pushed himself up from the couch, broom in hand.
You rushed out of the bedroom saying you had to help them.
Why?
Because that thing is going after them.
How do you know?
It headed down the dirt road.
So?
Oh, God.
What?
Are you lying to us, David?
No, of course, no.
Seth got up in my face.
He wasn't so much angry as he was worried.
His eyes were wet and glazed over.
What happened to them?
To us?
I glanced about the room,
unable to stare Seth in the eyes.
Finally, I took a deep breath and looked to the ceiling where a moth fluttered around the ceiling fan.
David
David
David
David is a lot of them.
Yeah.
Oh!
David?
We all die.
We all die.
We all die. That's it. Just die. You hear that, Katie? You fucking hear that?
This can't be happening. This cannot be happening.
My mind instantly skimmed through my last dream before the trip.
Me running through the woods and calling for my friends.
No one answering.
Me making it back to the cabin.
me running into the shadow man
that was one part of my story
that I would keep to myself though
bringing up the shadow man
would only present more questions
questions I didn't have answers to
I love the nonchalant manner
we all die very succinct
well that's what you wanted to hear wasn't it
if it's what really happens
it was a dream
I don't know what really happens
Seth sat back down in the couch.
His legs seemed to be in pain.
He held his thigh and closed his eyes.
Kitty leaned against the wall and wiped tears on her collar.
So they go, go after them.
Even though it's worthless, you know, since we all die.
I didn't respond.
Seth and Katie remained silent too
A few moments passed when I went back to the bedroom
and looked out the back window
What could I do?
What could I do?
I stayed in the bedroom for a long time, pacing.
What if Ethan and Jen were dead?
What now?
I didn't know what was going on,
but it did know the longer we stayed here,
the worse it would get.
We needed to.
Oh, God!
Who's there?
It's Jen.
Open up.
I rushed to the front door, moved a couple chairs and unlocked it.
Jen burst in, slamming the door behind her.
Jen was drenched in blood. It was splattered all over shirt and pants.
Oh my god, Jen!
Where's Ethan?
He didn't make it back.
No, no, please.
I don't want to die here.
I don't want to die here.
But Katie, you know as well as I do that we all die here.
Isn't that right, David?
Isn't that right?
