Chapter 4
Those that survive
Part 3
I'm
A new day.
A new chance.
Let's try this.
This was the fourth time we were out here trying to hotwire Ryan's Camry.
The first three attempts were unsuccessful, as the creature would appear shortly after we started.
Each time we got a little bit closer.
Any sign of it?
No.
Jen once again stood on the van.
scanning for danger.
Seth was in the car, under the dashboard, trying to splice wires together.
Now that the connector's off, I just need to connect the right wires.
Okay, well then, let's hurry up then.
Let me see the manual again.
It was a clear day.
Not a cloud in the sky.
We started early.
The sun was beginning to rise over the tree line.
Okay, so this to this, and then...
Oh, crap.
What?
Wrong wire.
Please don't short anything.
We're fine.
We're fine. I'd just have to strip this one. Holy shit. This should work.
Oh, shit.
I don't see anything. We're fine.
Are you sure? I heard something.
Me too. But I think we're fine.
I think we're fine.
What's going on?
Am I continuing?
Yes.
Hurry.
Okay, okay.
Power wire is connected.
Now all we have to do is...
Hurry up, Seth.
Don't rush me.
Does Katie see anything?
She's shaking her head.
Once again, Katie was in the loft of the cabin, looking out at the field.
A bang on the window with signifying danger.
What's taking so long?
I thought you said we almost had it yesterday.
You said ten minutes, Seth.
It hasn't been ten minutes.
Yeah, it's been twelve.
If you can't do it, I can't.
can do it.
Just give me one more minute.
I'm stripping the goddamn wires with a steak knife.
I'm surprised it hasn't shown up yet.
I'm sure it'll grace us with its presence soon enough.
Jen.
good.
Keep going.
Okay, here
goes. Fingers crossed.
Do it.
Seth, tap
the starter wires together.
Come on.
Come on.
Yes.
Holy shit.
I got this. I fucking told you.
Seth grabbed a bit of tape and quickly wrap the wires.
Can't let the ends touch again.
We're done?
We're done.
Jen waved Katie.
She smiled and disappeared from the window.
Oh, shit.
What the fuck?
I tripped the alarm. Where's the knife?
I don't know.
Turn that off.
I'm trying. Where's the fucking knife?
You just had it.
Oh, fuck it.
Seth yanked out a thin yellow wire,
and the alarm abruptly shut off.
Piece of shit.
What? No!
Shit!
What happened?
Seth started scrambling.
He taped the power wires back together.
He ripped the tape off of the one starter wire and began tapping the other two wires together.
Nothing happened.
No, no.
What the hell happened?
Fuck!
I stood to see Katie by the cabin, looking our way.
She pointed past us.
I turned around to see the creature running right for me.
David!
I pushed Seth into the car.
He screamed as I jumped onto his lake.
I slammed the driver's side door, just as the creature reached us.
It reached in through the broken window.
I grabbed a hammer out of the car.
the tool bag and started swinging wildly.
Get the knife. Get the fucking knife.
The creature grabbed my leg.
I kicked wildly as it tried to pull me out through the window.
Its other scrawny arm grabbed at my chest.
David!
I quickly flipped the hammer around in my hand and swung.
I nailed a creature right in the face as it tried to bite down on my arm.
It fell back from the blow.
Now was her chance.
Jen ran to the passenger door, opened it, and Yanked Seth out.
out. I slid out after him. The creature jumped onto the roof of the camera and slashed at my
face. David! Go! Go! Jen pulled Seth up and they ran back to the cabin. Luckily for them,
not for me, the creature didn't give chase. It fixated on me. It jumped onto the van's roof.
I dove onto the ground and rolled under the vehicle.
I have to make it back to the cabin.
I held the hammer close.
Shit.
Shit.
Oh, fuck.
The stomping on the roof stopped.
Where was it?
I looked to the left and then the right.
Nothing.
I looked forward.
Nothing.
Fuck.
Then I felt a slight brush on my leg.
Oh shit!
The creature snatched my ankle and pulled.
I dug my hands into the grass and dirt.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I was being yanked out from underneath the van.
I twisted onto my side and kicked wildly.
As hard as I could.
I reached up and grabbed down to the rear axle.
The bottom part of my body exposed.
I had been kicked, able to hit the creature right in the face.
It stumbled back.
Now was my chance.
I rolled out from under the van, jumped up, and ran.
I'm going to be able to be.
Ah!
You sure you're okay.
I'm fine.
We all sat in the living room.
Seth drank vodka right from the bottle.
Katie stared at the floor.
Jen inspected my newly wrapped bandages and I wiped sweat from my forehead.
Okay, so when do we try again?
We don't.
What? Why?
The battery is shot.
How do you know that?
I'd cross the wires. There's nowhere starting it.
Could we try jump-starting it?
We could, but it'll take all of us.
That's fine.
I mean, if you have jumper cables.
I do.
So there's still a chance?
A slim one.
Some newer models have a security measure that locks the ignition system.
I think that's why the alarm set.
So you didn't necessarily cross the wrong wires?
No, I did.
But I'm not sure.
if that's why the security system set, or if it was because of the chip and the ignition shut down.
Okay, Seth. So then, what are you saying?
I'm saying we're fucked.
Seth took another swig from his bottle.
That's not a bad idea. I could use a drink.
Grab me something.
Two minutes later, we were all drinking straight from the liquor bottles.
Rum, vodka, tequila.
Time passed slowly.
And the clock hit nine.
We were all feeling a bit buzzed.
Seth was feeling it a little harder, but it didn't slow him down.
He drank nearly half the bottle.
I hate just waiting.
I hate just waiting here.
What was
The car
That was your idea
I know
It almost worked
Nah
I realized it now
What
He was never gonna work
We already know how this ends
For fuck's sake Seth
It's pointless
I'm sorry I never told you that
Fuck you
So, you should have told us earlier.
You should have told us before this whole camping trip.
Like, I knew this would happen.
You did.
Just cut the crap, Seth.
All right, yeah. Stick up for David.
Hey, why don't you guys fuck and just get it over with?
You are such an asshole.
Can we stop fighting?
That's not going to help anything.
Help anything.
We're sitting here, waiting to die.
We just need another plan
There's nothing else we can do
That thing's just gonna wait us out
How was I supposed to know?
What?
About all of this
No one takes dreams seriously
They're just fucking dreams
You can now
I think it's a little late for all that
It's not over
The hell is yet to break loose
What is that?
What is what?
What you just said?
I don't know.
Hell has yet to break loose.
It was in an article Ethan showed me.
About that crazy woman?
What crazy woman?
Yeah, the crazy one in Rutherford.
The one who killed her family.
Her neighborhood are repeating that.
Hell has yet to break loose
She said
When the earth is drained
And all hell breaks loose
She kept repeating him
And she left the house
You know, before she shot gun those people
Can we not
What does that mean?
How hell should I know?
Seth took another swig from his bottle
smiled
Now
Now who's not forgetting
wasted tonight.
