An hour passed and nothing happened.
Starting point is 00:01:30 No strange crawling man appeared, which I could only imagine was a creature like that from the campground. The power did remain off, and we all sat in the main dining area. The storm didn't slow down. In fact, water was now up to the front door. Esther had put some bags of rice to block the water seeping in through the crack. How bad does this area usually flood? Really bad. Two years ago, it rained for days.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Horrible flooding. Ruin the whole dinah. Water was up two feet. We were closed down in a couple months. Remember that dear? Yes, it was horrible. This is crazy, though. I've never seen it flood this quickly. I need to get back to my parents. I need to make sure they're safe. Yeah, the same goes for my daughter. I can't sit here. Don't go out there, man. That guy. I haven't seen one car, one person, passed this dinah. How is that possible?
Starting point is 00:02:26 Don't worry, honey. Sarah's fine. She probably is in the house, waiting for you. She sees the weather. Let's just wait till it blows over. I'm thinking of walking at this point. Joel, you live on the other side of town. Don't do it. We need to get you to the police. Look at you. I am not going back out there. Shit. If the rain keeps up like this, we may find ourselves on the roof. I can't believe this shit is happening again. We just fixed this place up. Are you cold? Alan shivered. A little. Here.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Beth got her coat and put it over the injured man. That's it. I can't stay here. I have to make sure my daughter's okay. Don't. Joel, are you sure? I'll be fine. I got a gun in the car. I'll drive as far as I can and walk the rest of the way. Waiting here isn't going to help. I have a house phone. I'll try calling the precinct when I get home. See what's going on. I scooted over to Roland in the corner booth.
Starting point is 00:03:29 She was looking through the Sefton Truss File He's going to die Shh Be careful, honey I watched through the window as Joel trudged through ankle-deep water to his truck He stopped and looked off to the woodline What's he doing?
Starting point is 00:03:56 He sees something in the woods Sees what? Joel jumped into his truck and sped off. Did he see something? That was odd. The fucker probably didn't tell us. Charlie, language. Tell us what?
Starting point is 00:04:19 Tell us what he saw. Crazy guy. Relax. So Joel sees the crazy guy. He takes a gun with him? What a prick. Charlie! Sorry, Mom, you need a swear jar.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Just for you. When he gets to the flooded streets, he's going to get out and walk? Guess so. Otherwise, he'll stall out his truck. I wonder if I could walk to my parents. Where do they live? They bought the property on Northridge. She means Becca's old place.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Oh, right, right, right. Would the gravel roads be flooded? That take you to the farmhouse? Yeah, south of here. They bought the one with the old silo. Right, beckas. Um, I'd say the gravel roads would be tough to get through right now. They are, I drove by them.
Starting point is 00:05:09 You're not getting through there unless you got scuba gear. I'm worried about my parents, especially when... Julia trailed off as she looked over to Alan. As much as I would love to be in the comfort of my own house, I think staying here is probably the best option for now. Until this place turns out of fucking Atlantis, look. The water had seeped into the diner. This is crazy.
Starting point is 00:05:32 Completely crazy. Steve walked into the restroom. I hope my parents are okay. Roland continued to flip through the file. What do you hope to find? Not sure. Can you think he went through this? There is a bad storm that same week, right?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Yeah. It's possible. But Patricia Sanders didn't go camping before she murdered those people in Rutherford. That's true. Maybe there isn't a connection. Maybe it just happens to certain people and there's no reason why. There has to be a reason. Roland continued to flip through the file, scanning each page.
Starting point is 00:06:27 I'll be right back. Where are you going? For going to be stuck here, I'm getting my bag. Roland went to the front door, stepped over the rice bags. Where are you going? To get my bag out of the car. I watched as Roland jogged to the car. opened the door and pulled out her bag.
Starting point is 00:07:00 When she came back in, she shook off her jacket. You want some? You sure? It may calm you a bit. Nothing's going to calm me right now. Roland sifted through more pages. One picture in the file showed Sefton's daughter laying in her bed, blood on the pillow, a hole in her head. I grabbed the picture. What?
Starting point is 00:07:51 That's her. His daughter, yes. What the hell? Oh, my. Is that the radio? I thought we didn't have power. It runs on batteries. Still, how's it on?
Starting point is 00:08:07 Hester grabbed the radio from behind the county. That was weird. That was weird, right? What? Is that the radio? Esther set the radio down on the counter. Everyone, saved for Alan, got up and walked over to it. What the hell is that?
Starting point is 00:09:22 Roland looked at me. David? I don't know. I felt a chill run down my spine. Well, if that's not fucking creepy, I don't know what is. Charlie! Oh, come on, I can't be the only one thinking that. Why would it just start up like that?
Starting point is 00:09:44 I walked around the counter. How could I tell these people what was happening? There was no way they would believe me. Hey, is that Joel? Everyone turned around to see headlights heading for the diner. He, uh, he's going pretty fast. Why is he driving so fast? That's when I noticed the radio had stopped.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Oh, shit. He's, he's not slowing down. Watch out! I dove to the side under the near table. The truck crashed through the front door, smashing through a booth and into the counter. David, are you okay? I quickly pushed two chairs off me and got up.
Starting point is 00:10:48 I'm fine. I'm fine. Jesus Christ! I looked over my body real quick. Nothing but a few scraps and bruises. Why the hell is it still revving? There was no one in the truck. Steve made his way to the driver's side door and pulled it open. Oh my God!
Starting point is 00:11:15 What is it? I jumped on a chair and leaned over the hood. Through the broken windshield, I could see the bottom half of what was once Joel. He had been ripped apart at the waist. His foot still firmly on the gas. Oh, my God! Steve reached in, put the truck in part, and pulled out the keys. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I looked over to see Julia just now getting up. I helped her. You okay? I think so. Someone, help me. Alan was pinned between a booth and overturned table.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Steve pulled him out of the debris. It's him. That guy must have done that. It's him. Shut up. I'm telling you! Roland jumped into the back of the truck. What are you doing? Trying to find out what the fuck happened. water was pouring down from the ceiling part of the roof had caved in the wind was whipping into the diner it was bitingly cold what happened julia made her way to the truck and peered in
Starting point is 00:12:37 i think i'm going to be sick she rushed off to the restroom as everyone surveyed the wreckage i stared out into the storm it wasn't dark yet but it would be soon and things always got worse in the dark God damn it. Not again. I lowered my head. I lowered my head and closed my eyes. I took a deep breath. I can beat this. I can beat this. I can beat this. I did it before, I can do it again. When I opened my eyes, I noticed I was standing on the photo of Sefton's murdered daughter. I didn't notice before, but she had something in her hand. It was a small music box. I looked over at the small radio that now lay on the ground.
Starting point is 00:13:44 It was cracked and busted, but somehow the music continued to play. Paralyzed, written and edited by Robert M.
