Chapter 8
When It brings
Part 4
I'm going to be able to
it took a few moments for everyone to collect themselves no one was seriously injured i told you a man attacked me look it ripped him apart
i'm sorry who could rip a man apart he wasn't ripped apart what are you talking about steve it was too clean i think someone someone cut him sliced right through jesus we were now in the kitchen the diner was a mess
brain was pouring in.
Steve held a knife, and Roland had her gun at her side.
Roland had also found Joel's gun in his truck.
There was one clip. She checked it.
He fired it.
A lot of fucking good that did.
Can anyone else here shoot?
I'll take it. I don't feel too comfortable with only a knife.
Are you a cop?
Yes.
Wait. If you're a cop, why are we trying to call the police?
I'm a detective, but not here.
We're from Florida.
What brought you here?
Vacation, right?
Right.
Steve gave us an awkward look.
But if you're a cop, what do we do?
We need to get the hell out of here.
The storm shows no signs of slowing down, and the water's pouring in.
Not to mention the fucking murderer.
There's someone or something out there.
Something?
What do you mean by that?
We just...
We don't know what's out there.
I do.
So did I, but I would keep that to myself.
Is there another place we can go?
Somewhere close, somewhere more secure?
You mean somewhere without a truck in the wall?
Anything.
There's some places in town.
What about Angeles?
The grocery store?
All the roads will be flooded if we drive.
We can't go far.
Where's the police station?
There's no way.
It's all flooded past Maine.
Unless we walk.
I'm not walking out in that storm.
That's where he is.
I agree with Mr. Panic over here.
Joel came back half gone.
I'm not leaving.
There's a fucking psychotic killer out there.
I say we close the kitchen door and hunker down here.
I'm okay with that.
We're exposed.
We have no protection.
We have two guns.
Whoever did that to Joel could have a gun too.
What do you think?
Julia was staring at me.
Me?
She nodded.
Uh, I...
I don't know.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
Why are you asking him?
Look!
The flooding had made its way to the kitchen.
We can't stay here.
Bullshit!
My parents' place isn't far.
Oh, so you did bring scuba gear?
It's on a hill. It wouldn't be flooded.
But the gravel roads are.
Hmm.
What is it, Steve?
There's the old bird trail.
Bird trail?
Sorry, didn't bring my binoculars.
Maybe next time, though.
I'm not talking about sightseeing.
The bird trail crosses the gravel roads.
You mean a nature.
your trail? Yeah. The farmland floods too. Yeah, but not the houses. Most of the farmhouses sit higher up.
The elevation picks up once you get to the bend. Two years ago, the crops were all destroyed, but none of the
houses flooded. I'm still not walking out of here. That's far, and my leg is killing me.
If we take the bird trail, we wouldn't have to walk. Steve, your truck won't fit on that trail. It's
too narrow. Well, maybe not my truck, but this guy has a civic. So I have to drive? We may have to take two cars up.
how far is the trail we can't drive far you can see the sign from the diner it's right around the corner
i jumped up on the counter and sat i leaned my head against the wall julia walked over to me
what do you think why do you keep asking him i remembered the cabin i remembered barricading the door and
windows with furniture while i never felt completely safe it did provide signs
comfort. But this diner, exposed to the weather and multiple doors, one of which had no lock
and swung freely, this diner did not provide safety or comfort. I stared at the water
seeping in. I don't think we should stay here. Well, if we plan on going, we need to leave
now, before the flooding makes it impossible to move the cars. But what if he's out there?
We'll deal with it.
I don't know.
Take it.
Okay.
Thank you.
Thank you.
We had taken two cars.
We had taken two cars.
Roland drove me, Julia, and Alan.
Charlie was in the car behind us with Steve, Beth, and Esther.
The parking lot was flooded, but we were just able to get out and onto the Gravel Bird Trail around the corner.
We slowly made our climb through the dense forest.
Roland had her high beams on.
Julia, can I ask you something?
You can?
Why did you keep asking David what he wanted to do?
What he thought?
Because I heard you guys talking at the diner.
When the phones went static, you said it's happening again.
Roland and I shared a look
What
And in the diner
When Joel left the second time
I heard you say he's going to die
And he did
Wait, what the hell?
What's going on?
You two aren't here for vacation, are you?
We're trying to solve a case
That's why you met up with Joel
I saw the file
Roland had scrounged up as much of the file
As she could from the debris in the diner
She put it in her bag
took a few more swigs of rum
and threw the bag in the trunk.
Do you know what's going on?
I didn't know how to answer.
David, if you answer, keep it brief.
Hey, we have a right to know.
I want to know about this fucking psychopath.
At first I thought Alan was talking about me
until I realized he was staring out into the woods.
He meant the guy who attacked,
or should I say creature?
We don't know.
David?
It's hard to explain.
What's happening here is similar to something I experienced in Florida.
Is happening again?
Yes.
Is it the same guy?
It's not a guy.
What are you talking about?
Oh, shit.
What happened?
Something ran across the path up ahead.
Like what? A deer?
I don't know.
Roland proceeded cautiously.
I spun in my seat to see the other car following us closely.
Are we close?
I don't know. I haven't been this way.
When I turned in my seat, I noticed someone outside in the woods.
At first I thought it was the shadow man, but this man had a pale white face.
I could just barely make him out.
He stared at us.
We turned a bend, and he was gone.
The near trees blocking my view.
I looked around the car, but no one else saw him.
We drove for another 15 minutes in silence.
You said your parents' property had a silo, right?
Yes.
Is that it?
I can't see.
Roland pointed forward, but it wasn't until a flash of lightning that Julie was able to confirm.
That's it.
We hit the gravel roads and made a right.
We're almost there.
Now what?
Look.
Roland unclipped her gun.
In front of us in the distance stood a tall creature hunched over.
Flashes of the campsite of hot wiring the car
of running through the woods entered my mind.
That's him! That's him!
The creature bent down and got on all fours.
What's he doing?
Roland held her gun up.
Run him down.
Run him over!
The creature slowly crawled towards us.
Do something!
Then we heard it.
Growls and shrieks in the woods all over on every side.
What is that?
What the fuck is going on?
I looked to Roland, then to the creature crawling towards us, then to the woods.
In the distance, I could just barely see the man with the pale face.
And in his hands, an axe.
Hang on!
But before Roland could hit the gas, we were hit from behind by Charlie's car.
What are they doing?
Shit!
Roland tried to gain control as she hit the gas, but we slid down an incline.
The car tipped.
Shit, hang on.
And that's what I did, just as the car flipped and drove into the woods.
