Starting point is 00:00:00 You OK? I don't have to record. No, no, it's fine. I just... I just can't believe... I just can't believe... I'm just still in shock, really. I was just here like fucking two weeks ago. I know.
Starting point is 00:00:25 We'll take our time. Okay. Now I'm just going to set this up and we'll start. Yeah, sure. Okay. I'm sitting with Emily Patel, sister to Patricia Sanders. It is August 23rd, 8.20 a.m. We're meeting at two Justin's coffee bar on 2nd and 2nd High Springs. Can you tell me what you do?
Starting point is 00:00:53 Yes. I'm a... I work on a cruise ship. Emerald Bay. I'm entertainment management. Meaning? I oversee all the entertainment. All the festivities held on the cruise ship. I book all the comedians, musicians, etc. I have a business card if you want it.
Starting point is 00:01:13 No need. I'll take your word for it. This is why you couldn't meet sooner? Yes. I was out on the water until yesterday at 4. Is that when you heard the news? No. I heard about it the day of. about it the day of. My husband called me. He only calls with an emergency. Now, prior to recording, you told me you knew. Yes. When my husband called, I knew. Before he said anything, that it was about my sister. Why is that? Because she's been having trouble. What kind of
Starting point is 00:01:50 trouble? All kinds, Walt said. Walt is... Her husband, he's been having trouble. Her husband, Right, Walter Sanders. Sorry, I need to record everything stated for record. Sorry. It's okay. Go on. Walt said she'd been having trouble sleeping. Insomnia? He thought so at first. She tried pills. She tried remedies. Nothing worked. She saw a doctor, but then complained he didn't fix anything.
Starting point is 00:02:24 She even saw a sleep therapist. All they did was provide more pills. When did this start? I don't know. Months ago. Two? Three? No. Six.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Maybe eight. That long? Yeah, but it didn't really get bad until the last month or so. You could see it worrying on her too. She almost got fire from her job. She worked at the local convenience store in Rutherford. Right, Zach's Corner Store. Yeah, I just can't believe.
Starting point is 00:03:03 I mean, she was having trouble, but she would never... Sorry. It's okay. Take your time. I know all of this is sudden. And, in fact, if you like to reschedule... No. I want to know what happened.
Starting point is 00:03:25 She left her family. I mean, loved. The fact that she could go off and do something like this. I understand. It took everybody by surprise. My partner and I interviewed several neighbors and people in Rutherford. They're just a shock. Is it true what her neighbor said?
Starting point is 00:03:51 All hell breaks, Liz? Did my sister really say that? That's what the neighbor. told my partner. Apparently she kept shouting it as she left the house. I just don't get it. I don't. She loved them. Is there anything you can tell us about her sleeping maybe? Did she sleepwalk? Did she have nightmares? A person's mind can do odd things without sleep. I'm sure you heard about the burns on her body. They did. She would get an hour here and there. But she would get an hour here and there. it had to be. It.
Starting point is 00:04:29 She mentioned it getting worse and worse. Right. As for sleepwalking, maybe once or twice. Actually, there was this one time. Walt told me about it. Tricia got up around three one night. He said she was walking around for quite some time. He thought she was awake.
Starting point is 00:04:54 When he finally checked up on her, he found found her in the kitchen writing on the walls with lipstick. She kept writing the number 13. 13? Yeah. When he woke her up, she had no mark election. Huh. Well, was scared. That's when he set up an appointment with a sleep specialist. And? And nothing. Nothing changed? If time went on, she just kept getting worse. Did she ever write anything again?
Starting point is 00:05:31 On the walls? The number 13? Anything. No. At least Walt never said anything. Just that one time. You were here visiting two weeks ago. I drove up from Port Charlotte.
Starting point is 00:05:48 I made a special trip to see her. When I got here, she looked horrible. Did she say anything? Anything else importantness? We talked for a while. She told me she was tired. She told me she wanted it to stop. She told me she missed me and my husband, Henry.
Starting point is 00:06:13 She told me about some of her dreams, but just pieces, whatever she could remember. Anything important from her dreams? They were just dreams. Everyone she mentioned was we. But that's what dreams are. There was this one thing she said, though. Something from a dream, I think. The morning I left, to head back to Port Charlotte,
Starting point is 00:06:40 Tricia walked me to my car. She was worried about her family. She said, if anything happened, to take care of them. I told her not to worry. No one was going to hurt them. She said she wasn't worried about a person hurting them. What did that mean? I asked her. She didn't respond.
Starting point is 00:07:05 She hugged me and headed back inside. I tried calling out of work. I wanted to stay with her, but I couldn't. On my way back to Port Charlotte, I text Walt and told him to keep me in phone without Trisha. He thought maybe... I don't know what I thought. thought. My sister was not insane. I don't believe she was. There was, there was something wrong with her. I agree. I'm sorry. Don't be. Thank you for your time. Really. We'll find out what happened. We will.
