This is the P.H.L.Y. Emergency podcast.
We got a tight end double dip.
Bull Wolf, E.J. Smith, Fran Duffy.
Fran, E.J., break it down.
I was going to say, you can't ask how Fran's doing when the Eagles signed some dirty work tight ends.
You know, you need to go straight to me.
Let's hear it. Let's hear it.
What have the Eagles done?
The Eagles have signed two tight ends.
One being Johnny Munt, who I'm just going to listen.
We're going to lead with the money quote up top.
I don't have any reporting here.
But Kevin O'Connell referred to him as the best tight end three in the NFL
because of what he can do as a blocker, what he can do,
handling the dirty work, setting the edge, being nasty.
So I'm very excited for one Johnny Munt.
And the Eagles also re-signed Grant Calcutera, which I can confirm.
I can confirm both of these signings, actually,
reported by, I think it was Mike Garifolo
and Jeremy Fowler, respectively there.
So two tight ends, you know,
for the Eagles very much barren tight end
depth chart. I don't think that they're done
at the position by any stretch of the imagination,
but these signings have me intrigued.
Fran, what do you think?
I'm still trying to wrap my head around
how we, on the last emergency podcast,
we said like, Tariq Wullen is the ideal
EJ's type of guy.
And we go to Johnny Munt and we're like, oh, yeah, like, this is my guy.
Like, couldn't be on further ends of the spectrum from Tariqul and to Johnny Munt.
But here we are.
No, I think that Johnny Munt is a sign that makes a lot of sense, certainly for the Eagles.
It's the co-keefed, you know, analog where it's like, yeah, like, this is a pure blocking tight end.
31 years old.
Yeah, you know, he's the guy that's been doing it in the league for a few years.
It was released by Jacksonville, just in the,
the last few days, so it won't count against the compic formula. This is a player that can come in,
fill this role, do it at a high level. I think pairing that with Calcutera, I don't imagine
that they're going to be asking Calcutera to be doing the things that they asked them to do last
year in terms of leading the way on counter over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
So yeah, I think that in that role, like as like a move player, like Calcater is fine, one-year deal.
You see if you can bring somebody in to compete with him for that role.
But yeah, I think this is fine.
This is a fine outcome tonight.
What was I supposed to do again today, Mr. Blunt?
Mr. Blunt.
Blunt.
Oh, that's right.
I forgot to sign a tight end.
And there you have it.
That's how this one came down as the Eagles.
Howie Roseman figures out that he did need a blocking tight end.
Johnny Munt.
all kinds of little connections here.
Both John Mannion and Chris Cooper,
we're with Johnny Muntz over the years.
This is their guy who is here to be a blocker.
And to a very, like just the floor degree,
like I expect this to not be done for them at the position,
but they could go into the draft with this as their tight end room.
They have a guy who is a theoretical receiver,
a guy who can block,
if you know that you're going to draft at least one tight end over the course of draft weekend,
that guy can now be any kind of player.
Yeah.
I think they need one more ad.
Yeah.
I think they probably do, but they could wait around.
Yeah, maybe.
I think you're still missing a number one primary receiving.
No doubt.
No doubt.
Fran, I'll defer to you, but I feel like it's harder to find that in the draft than it would be somebody.
That could be, you know, your grand calcutera competition.
I mean, it's always hard to find like the guy that has like the two-way viability, right?
That can be equal parts, pass catcher and receiver and do them both really well.
I think there are plenty of examples of guys that can do a little bit of both.
And then maybe you hope that, you know, the comparison I made at the combine was there are a handful of Brent Sellex, you know, Cincinnati Brent Sellex in this class where, you know, there's fifth round pick that maybe turns into the starter down the line and say equal parts.
receiver and blocker. There's a bunch of those guys. So in theory you can go in, but I do think that
you probably want to go in. Because honestly, if that's the tight end room going into the draft,
like, Sadieke's at the top of the list. Like you got to get, I think you got to get Sadiq.
Because I don't know if there's anybody else in there that I'm saying like, oh yeah. Like if they,
if they pair this third round pick with Johnny Munt and Grant Calcuttaire, we're good. I do think
you probably want something else there. Yeah. Really quick note, you mentioned that Sean Manning and Chris
Cooper were with, you know, spent time around Johnny Munt. He has spent his career exclusively
with either Sean McVeigh or Sean McVeigh, Kyle Shanahan disciples. A nine-year career
spent with the Los Angeles Rams where he overlapped with Sean Mannion as a player. And then,
you know, with the Minnesota Vikings after that. And then last season with Liam Cohen,
William Cohen in Jacksonville. So I think this is a nod to the system that Sean Mannion is
bringing to the Eagles, a player that is well versed, maybe a translator, you know, at the tight-end
position for those guys and, you know, whoever they add to the room. And it's kind of like proof of
concept in what Sean Mang is going to bring to the Eagles. You know what this, you know,
what Johnny Munt looks like in that type of system. There's a funny statistical nugget here,
because I was trying to look up, you know, how, how, how, how Keefty is Johnny Munt in terms of,
like, not getting targeted at all. And it is very,
funny because over the course of his career and last year as well, he is targeted at a higher
rate and has more yards per run than Grand Calcutera.
Yeah.
Grand Calcutera is the one who never gets thrown to when he's on the field just because of
the way the Eagles offense typically operates, where it's just three guys that you're
throwing to.
So it's a funny little thing, but I would imagine that Johnny Munt here is going to get targeted
at a very, very low rate.
Yeah.
Can I say my piece on Grand Calcutera?
Fran, you kind of said it earlier.
And I know there's going to be a lot of negativity about him signing back with the team.
I know even, but when I talked about it earlier and there's definitely a sentiment out there.
It's a tough one for me.
It's a first bad one for me in Flew World Order.
But go ahead.
Oh, in Flew World Order.
I thought you meant just your first wrong take.
I was probably high on it.
You guys were equal.
You both had 13.
I had 22.
Got it.
I'll just say in 2024, he had 24 catches for 298.
yards, primarily filling in for Dallas
Goddard because he was injured.
And I remember I wrote a story that year
about how Grant was someone who was
willing to do whatever the team needed to do.
And, you know, like, obviously, I think
he had a better season in 2024
as a blocker, not exceptional by any stretch
of the imagination, but better.
And he's always been a willing blocker.
It's just, you know, the role that they asked him to
fill last year, it just, you know,
it was really suboptimal for him.
And it's not like he asked for that role.
So I know that there will be people who were
disappointed that he's back because of how much he struggled last year.
I think he's, like you said, friend, I think he's a fine depth tight end.
You probably want to draft somebody to bring competition in.
But I don't know.
I've seen Grant Calcutera play like serviceable football for this team enough to not poop who the move.
I do think that a lot of the things he was asked to do in 2024 were similar to what he was
asked to do last year.
He was just considerably worse at them last year.
Yeah.
Okay.
That's fair.
I think that that's the big.
And honestly, it's the same as Goddard.
Like it was a huge drop off for Dallas Goddard as a blocker.
particularly after that early IR stand.
Once he came back, it just was not the same.
So, yeah, I think that with Calcutera, like,
he's going to need to get with the program
in terms of at least become somewhat serviceable.
And even though the plan would be not to use him in that way,
you still need to have some kind of viability
at the point of attack in some way, shape, or form.
So, yeah, I do think that that's going to be something
he's going to have to prove this summer.
Well, your team's starting line that may change,
but the price of your internet will not.
I got the five-year price guarantee from our friends at Xfinity.
And then speaking of things that change over the years, we talked about this,
it has been a very long road for the Eagles where it has been nothing but homegrown tight ends.
You know, before Dallas Goddard was Zach Ertz, before that was Brent Selick, before that was L.J. Smith, before that was Chad Lewis.
It's a long little lineage here.
Do you expect that this now means Dallas Goddard is definitely out the door?
EJ. And I believe, according to Jeff McLean's reporting, it is midnight tonight where
the Eagles have a decision on whether to restructure him or not and save that cap room.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he's gone, especially not the two
signings. I don't think that that really impacts one way or another. What happens with Dallas
Goddard? I think you could tell me that they add Dallas Goddard to this room and I feel pretty
good about the room. I wouldn't say that, you know, I wouldn't say, I kind of expected a little bit
more turnover, you know, than you bring Grant Calcutera back and Dallas got her and you
add a blocking tight end. But I would feel fine about the room if that was what they decided to do.
I'd also be fined with the room if they, you know, I mean, Jago Conco is still out there, at least to
my knowledge. It's been a crazy night. There's a lot going on. Yeah. But, you know, if they added
somebody like him, I would feel fine about it too. And then, you know, Fran can catch me up on some
of the like receiver first type type tight ends that you could get in the draft. But, you know, I think
I think I'd feel, I don't think it changes too much how I feel about Dallas
Goddard.
I would say I would be surprised if they went into a season with two of the three
tight ends being Chigna Kigakonkwo and Grant Calcutera.
I think that that would be like a loser goes home match in training camp.
And you already know if you're paying Chig, like it's going to be Grant going home.
So yeah, my guess with this offense, the way that they structure that they need two guys
that can block.
And so having Chig and Calcutera.
there. That would be a tough sell. Yeah. So, I mean, I feel like there's not many quality number one
combo tight ends that you're going to find in free agency. Other thing Dallas Goddard at this point.
I mean, I can look at Joe. That's really good. Yeah, Injoku. Okay. Yeah. I,
how do you feel about him as a blocker relative to Goddard? Like, who would you say is more
of a plus. 25 Goddard or previous Goddard? Like, he's better than last year's Goddard, but not as good
as Pete Gottert. So like it's, but also like he's, he's been, he's been, he's been. He's been. He's
He's been solid as a blocker for his career.
So it's not like he's ever been like a bad player at the point of attack.
Yeah.
Okay.
Friend, would you like to spend a few minutes discussing the Max Crosby situation?
Because I know it's got you fired up.
I don't know if it's got me fired up as much as like my antenna is going off.
I don't know.
I don't know if I'm buying the failed physical thing.
Look, failed physicals happen.
Like that's something that that does happen.
But they are shared ahead of time.
like you know it usually is led with hey max crosbie failed physical not like the ravens are backing out
and we are backing out of the trade and the trade is not happening and then afterwards it's oh he actually
failed his physical today um they knew like all right there was there was a there was an issue now look
in baltimore's defense as we talk we have talked about whenever we brought up crosbie it's like
he has played a lot of snaps he has played like he's like he's got a lot of wear and terror in his body
he's what 28 29 i'm sure like his body is is older than your typical 28 29 any NFL
starter off the edge but i don't know i don't know if i'm quite uh if i'm quite buying the whole thing
it feels a little like uh convenient that they knew like oh well we always have this out it's not
official until tomorrow yeah uh we'll see how the market free agency did not go their way
yeah free agents didn't go their way they lose linderbom to the raiders the raiders so like severe
really outbid them. Now, they lost a bunch of other players too, and they're probably not going to be
able to get those guys back, even though none of it, like, every transaction we've seen, like,
can change. Every single one can Frank Gore it, right, like where it can go the other way.
So I think that, yeah, it's non-zero that it's not like, that it's like chicanery on
Baltimore's part. I'll say that. Trey Hendrickson's just. Yeah, that's right. If they now sign
Trey Hendrickson, yeah, it does. Yeah, I think that's, if that is the other shoe to drop, I think
we'll have some questions there.
But so to me, like, I know that there are people inside the league.
They're like, the legal tampering period is stupid.
Let's just let's say like, all right, whatever the start of free agency is, that's the start of free agency.
Like, why do we have to go through this whole two-day song and dance?
Let's just, let's just start it.
This would be fuel to that fire.
This would be what everyone that feels that way.
We'll point to and say, you know, no, like we're going to hold people to that and not allow teams to have that runway of two days.
I mean, you know, when the Stafford Gough trade happened, that was weeks before the league year started.
And so rather than giving teams that flexibility, no, like we're going to make sure, like, when it's official, it's official.
Yeah.
Two ripple effects from the Max Crosby thing that I wanted to ask you guys.
I mean, does Howie try and take the discounted price on Max Crosby at this point?
I mean, they lost Jalen Phillips.
They can preserve the comp pick if they make a move.
But still, it's a big price to pay.
I would still imagine.
Well, I don't think the price is going to be two firsts anymore.
I mean, yeah, yesterday's price is not today's price,
but I still think it's going to cost, you know, a good amount.
I mean, are you trading the Eagles one this year for Max Crosby?
I think I'm not.
Yeah, I don't think I am.
Because you're going to have to pay them.
And so if you're going to pay an older pass rusher anyway, just pay Trey Hendrickson.
Like, just pay like, I don't know.
The compic factors into that at that point.
Well, we have Eagles news.
Oh, really?
Breaking from Adam Schifter.
Right in time.
Got her?
No.
E.J. predicted.
Oh, no.
He put, he put 85 turkeys on Nkoby Dean signing with the Dallas Cowboys that an ex-Eagle would join the Dallas Cowboys.
And he was right that an eagle is joining the Dallas Cowboys.
It was not, however, Nicopi Dean.
Instead, Sam Howell is the new back for Dak Prescott.
Watch out, Dak.
He's almost got Yathe.
I like Sam Hal
He's almost got the NFC
The Christian Parker connection
Yeah he's almost got he's almost got the
All four
Yeah
Listen Christian Parker had a game plan for him in practice every week
He knows
This isn't a shot across my bow is it
No but the amount of turkeys
You put on the Kobe going to the Cowboys
Was a shot across your bow
Yeah that's fair
I mean they push
Is EJ's kind of player
No
Also
Let me be clear about one thing
I'm defending Grant Calcutera, but he does not fall under the umbrellas of my kind of player.
You know, I just, I got to call it how I see it.
Sam Howell also a local guy playing at North Carolina.
Yeah, exactly.
He's got guy.
Right up, right, you know, short trip up 95 to Philadelphia.
All right.
Wait, I had one more question for you.
I had one more question.
Right.
Does this, does this affect Nicoby Dean at all?
you don't think so
the Raiders spent a lot of money
and now they got Max back
I mean oh the Max Grosby
oh yeah
no I think I think Jalen Naylor
is is on the hook maybe
he's not gonna go
yeah
actually that's possible
that maybe the double dip
on the double dip at linebacker
is now in peril
a lot of money
I don't think
well actually I genuinely don't know
that's why I'm asking you guys
I think it's possible
I mean they have I think they have
they are screwed here
but they have 24 hours to find a new trade partner.
Yeah, I think the solution is probably just trade Max Crosby again.
Or a little bit less than what you got for him the first time.
That's tough.
It's really tough for the Ravens front office.
It could be.
I hope these teams play this year because that would be a real,
real barn partner.
All right, that'll close the book on the emergency tight end podcast.
E.J., give me your wrap-up thoughts on the double dip.
with Johnny Munt and Grant Yacquatera.
Yeah, Howie Roseman said that he needed to evolve the way that he views the tight end position.
I think that Johnny Munt is a perfect representation of what he was talking about.
This is a player that fits what Sean Mannyin wants schematically.
He's a player that has extensive experience and schemes that look like the one that Sean
Manning is going to install.
And, I mean, how can you not love a blocking tight end, a tight end that's going to get the dirty work done for the offense?
For that reason, I am a fan of the signing.
The Muntcake.
And Fran, Grant Calcutera, what do you have to say?
Yeah, I think that he's here to try and compete for the tight end three job as a move past catching first tight end.
I don't think that his roster spot is likely guaranteed.
I think he'll have the opportunity to come in, compete this summer.
I think he could be a fine option in that kind of a role as long as you're not asking him to be a heavy blocker.
And I don't think that this offensive staff will ask him to do that.
And he's got the best mustache in the city.
So congratulations to Grant Cacquitare for coming back.
And Johnny Mutt are coming to Philadelphia for E.J. and Fran.
I'm Bo. We will be with you the next time the Eagles make a move for an emergency podcast or tomorrow at 2 o'clock when we are live as we are every single weekday all year long.
