Starting point is 00:00:12 Hello, everybody, and welcome to the PHAY Eagles podcast, an emergency podcast live from the Xfinity Mobile Studio on a Sunday afternoon. It's bracket day. It's Oscars Day. It's the players. You need something else. And that is Hamer Roseman swooping in doing the thing at Tideon that we expected him to do. And that is bringing back Dallas Goddard on a one-year deal, E.J. How do you feel about it?
Starting point is 00:00:37 Yeah, I think this is something that we expected to happen. You know, the Eagles kept pushing the void date back on. Dallas Goddard's contract, which to me signaled that they wanted this to be the outcome and that Dallas Goddard wanted this to be the outcome. So I think it was a matter of figuring out what the number was going to be and what some of the other moves around the roster were going to be. But yeah, I think that this is a favorable outcome for both sides and one that I think both sides are pushing for. You know, we mentioned on the show Dallas Goddard wanted to be back. You know, and I don't know what his market, you know, how much his market materialized outside of the Eagles, but I also think
Starting point is 00:01:09 the Eagles saw the value in bringing him back. So a deal that makes a lot of a sense. And so now the makeup of the Eagles tight end room is Dallas got her at the top. Johnny Munt as you're blocking tight end. Grant Calcutera as a receiving option. E.J. Jenkins is still around and you enter the draft. Go ahead. Yeah. I thought you wanted him to be a fullback. I mean, Kamlatu can do it all. He's looking right over my shoulder. You got to give me a good shoulder. Then he can really do everything. Yeah, Cam Latu is technically on the roster as a tight end, but he is basically a fullback.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Anyway, the Eagles can enter the draft, let the draft come to them, but let's also remember they're in the exact same situation they were last year where they are entering the season with not a single tight end signed beyond this season. And so tight end remains a long-term need for this team, but they have done a good job to band-aid it. And in Dallas Goddert, you bring back a guy who has sneakily become like a franchise tent pole. And in fact, he will be entering his ninth season with the Eagles E.J. That is tied. And he will surpass in terms of total seasons, Zach Ertz. Now, Earth's played more games because Goddard has the injury history. But Zachertz was traded in the middle of his ninth season with the Eagles. This is now
Starting point is 00:02:32 Goddard's ninth season. Yeah. And it's a significant one because he wanted to be here. You know, I think when we hear from him, he will talk about, you know, planting roots here, having a family here. You know, I think that that's going to be part of his story. So, yeah, I think it is something worth mentioning here. You know, going into this next phase of the offseason, I think you put it well, I still suspect that the Eagles will be prioritizing tight end in the draft. Maybe not the first, you know, round or two of the draft, but I imagine that, you know, maybe third round, fourth round, fifth round, I think that they will try to find a Dallas Goddard successor, you know, and it's a position that we've seen they like to have succession planning in place. It's honestly not
Starting point is 00:03:10 too dissimilar to how they operate on the offensive line or, you know, at like defensive tackle in recent years where they like to have a young player that's sort of growing, you know, behind a player like Dallas Goddard to get a franchise, honestly at this point, one of the franchise's recent legends, maybe I would couch it with. So yeah, I'd expect them to still add to this position. But I think I said it when we signed or when we did the Johnny Munt Emergency Pod. If you bring back Dallas Goddard and your room, your top three are Dallas Goddard, Johnny Munt and Grand Calcutera slash Kamlatu, you know, then I feel pretty good about that room.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I think you can feel good about that room being a good fit for what Sean Mannion wants to do. And honestly, just from a talent perspective, I think that they've done a nice job, like kind of turning over that room while still having room to add a young player. I mean, they haven't really turned it over. It's not turning it over. You're right. Yeah. No, it's a-
Starting point is 00:04:02 replace Kylan Grantson with Johnny Munt. Yeah, they added what they needed last year, which is a blocking tight end. Yeah, that is the one thing about this, is that it really, it's not a much different room than it was the year before. But I don't think it needed to be. I think Johnny Munt is like the important addition
Starting point is 00:04:17 that you needed there. I think we're putting a little bit much on Johnny Munt at the moment. I think this is more about they have done enough to enter the draft. This room is going to look different in May. I agree. I feel pretty strongly about that. Yep, I think that you have to draft one. I mean, I still wouldn't rule out, like, if there's, like, Kenyon-Sadik is the first-round name.
Starting point is 00:04:39 But whether it's like Justin Jolie or Nate Borkature, I don't know if those guys are like surefire second-round prospects, but end of the second round, I don't know, like, about those two specifically as in their reign. Yeah, I think you're based on what Fran has told us, you're pushing them up the board a little bit. And I think you can wait and get a similar level player in the third. Third round pick on a tight end would not shock me at all. No, not at all. I think I probably will still expect them to go tight end either in the third or the fourth round. Now, we don't know the exact numbers here yet. My guess is it's going to be in the eight or nine million reign, most likely.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And if it gets to 10, that's a win for Goddard, but I doubt that it will. But the other thing that we expect is that doing this before the void means that the Eagles will open up some cap room by Brayette. getting Goddard back. Yeah, yeah, they avoided a $20 million dead cap hit by extending him. And they now have an opportunity to sort of better navigate the end of Dallas Goddard's contract in those void years. According to over the cap, they should have around $25 million. Yeah, by extending him, they have around $25 million. We'll see how much he takes up of that money. So yeah, no, it's from a bookkeeping perspective. It makes a lot of sense. The thing that I think really dragged this out, because I think some people will be watching and wondering, well, why did it take until Sunday?
Starting point is 00:06:04 You know, they pushed the void date back twice, two separate times to have this new deadline. And I think a big factor was A.J. Brown, you know, what was whatever would happen with A.J. Brown. And I think obviously you saw a lot of reporting around a potential trade. And then it kind of went quiet out of nowhere. And I think that that clarity probably informed what the Eagles wanted to do with Dall Scott. because taking that dead cap hit would have had a significant impact on their flexibility elsewhere. So I think the two were tied. And yeah, I think that because there is some clarity in that situation, at least in the short term,
Starting point is 00:06:37 it gave them an opportunity to negotiate with clarity with Goddard. But don't you think it's the inverse? Because if the clarity is that AJ is staying, then you would be willing to take on the dead cap hit with Goddard. Right, right. But if the clarity is you expect to move him, then resigning Goddard becomes. was an imperative. Yeah, I did. That was my read on it, but going into this weekend, you know, that if AJ were gone, you would be less, the way you said it is right. You don't want to take the dead cap hit for both of them. You'd be more willing to extend Goddard if AJ were gone.
Starting point is 00:07:10 I don't think that there's any, I mean, there's no movement on that. There's no momentum on that right now. But I do think at least knowing, like in the short term that you don't have an AJ trade imminent probably means that you would negotiate the Dallas Goddard extension in good faith rather than like making it so weighted toward what's going on with a j okay now we're we're going to talk more about this uh on the show tomorrow at two o'clock which if you are just joining us for the first time monday to friday we are live every day throughout this season talking about the eagles on p h oi join us for that um and thank you to exfinity for bringing us this show but we don't we don't know the numbers yet i think i mean the bottom line is this is this is good news for the eagles
Starting point is 00:07:51 and good news for eagles fans dallas goddard is a good player uh he has to to be able to stay on the field. You have to have a plan for when he doesn't. But, I mean, basically it was him or David and Joku at this point. And I think you take the known quantity for sure. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, I completely agree. I feel like it was those two options.
Starting point is 00:08:08 And I think the Eagles got the better of the two options. The starting lineup for the Eagles may not change at tight end this year. It's possible. But you know what does change. The price of your internet, unless you have that five-year price guarantee with our friends at Xfinity. All right, AJ. I mean, what other business is there for the Eagles to take care of?
Starting point is 00:08:29 I mean, I think you're going to spend a J. Brown to the side. Yeah, I think the AJ thing will be cool for a while. And then I think you're really filling out the depth chart. Again, kind of draft proofing, I think is how we've talked about it. Wouldn't shock me to see them sign a Fred Johnson type, maybe Fred Johnson himself, but a Fred Johnson type, somebody who can provide depth at multiple positions on the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Outside of that, like, yeah, we've talked about veteran linebacker. that doesn't really jump out to me. I think a move at edge rusher could make sense if you feel like you could really add some firepower. That's the one that jumps out. We've talked a lot about Jonathan Grenard. But yeah, I think it's going to be mostly making sure that you don't have any glaring needs going into the draft.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And honestly, they've done a lot of the work for that already. So, yeah, I'm excited. We'll be turning our eyes toward the draft a little bit here where they can make some significant additions. And I think, yeah, they're in a good position to do that. What is your number one favorite Dallas Goddard memory? probably the stiff arms against the Packers. I mean, that's kind of the obvious one.
Starting point is 00:09:29 It's that and the catch in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs by the sideline, which is really more about the throw that Jalen made, but that was an awesome catch by God. Now, on more of like a personal scores standpoint here, my favorite memory of Dallas Goddard is being ahead of the curve on him regressing as a blocker. You know, I remember, I feel like I said that on one of my first shows, actually. Wow, your favorite memory is burying the guy.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Yeah, interesting. I mean, yeah, I said I just felt like, you know, he hadn't been quite the same blocker. And then all of a sudden, it feels like everyone's mentioning that, oh, you know, Dallas Goddard. Because I got ridiculed, but, you know, never wrong, just early. You got ridiculed by who? By my co-host. I don't know if you've heard of this guy, but he has been known to ridicule from time to time. That doesn't sound accurate at all.
Starting point is 00:10:14 You're bringing into question your accuracy as a reporter. All right. Before we get going, E.J., any, any Oscars takes you want to get off your chest. I know, I know, you know, you watched F1, and so you're ready for it. I've seen like 8% of the movies that'll be up for nomination. You haven't said, oh yeah, I was going to say you haven't seen sinners, but it's too scary for you. Too spooky for me. So, no, no, no Oscars takes.
Starting point is 00:10:38 You got any you need to download before we get out of here? Well, somebody was asking me on the show on Friday, and it might have been a super chat and we forgot it. So I feel like I do owe that person, whoever it is. My take, I was texting, I was texting Sean late night last night. Because you and I went to a lovely event last night. got home, watched the second half of Hamnet, destroyed me. Just, oh, man, just broke me down.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Really hit. But for me, here's my take. It's down to, everybody knows who it's the two that it's down to. I left one battle after another after having already seen sinners, feeling like one battle after another was the best movie of the year, for sure. It was so good. Like it was, like picture perfect, loved it.
Starting point is 00:11:25 but the longer distance I've had from both, sinners is the one that has stayed with me more. So it's like a head versus heart thing. So I'm happy for both. I would be happy for both. But I think at the end of the day, like sinners is the one that's stuck with me. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:41 I like a Michael B. Jordan. So I'll be rooting for sinners tonight, even though I haven't seen it. Too scary. I'd like to see Cougar get up there, hopefully for screenplay. My favorite movie that wasn't nominated, it was just an accident.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And what else? The actor, I mean, I actually thought Paul Meskell was pretty good in Hamnet. I don't know. I'm just talking to a wall here, so. I'm about to say, I'm sorry. I've seen none of these movies. I like sinners. So I'll be honest.
Starting point is 00:12:12 I didn't know the Oscars were on tonight. Oh, yeah. Kids are going to get dressed up. It's going to be a whole party. That's very fun. Yeah. I might put it on. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Yeah. All right, that's all we got. The news you need to know, Dallas Goddard is back with the Philadelphia Eagles joining Johnny Munt, Grant Calcutera, E.J. Jenkins, and sometimes Cam Latu in the tight end room for the Eagles. Goddard is back for his ninth season with just like 300 yards or so. He's going to go to the top 10 in receiving yards in Eagles franchise history. If he brings a little bit more wood as a blocker this year, the Eagles get one of the better. all around tight ends in football, but this does not preclude them
Starting point is 00:12:58 from drafting a tight end in a little bit over a month. So for E.J. Smith, I'm Bo Wolf. We thank you for watching and listening. Thank you to Lindsay for being here on an emergency Sunday. We will be with you back tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:13:12 And as always, we love you.
