Starting point is 00:00:13 Hello everybody, live from the Xfinity Mobile Studio. This is the PHLY Eagles Emergency Podcast presented by our friends at Xfinity. As Howie Roseman has made his first big move of the offseason, well, Wolf, E.J. Smith, Fran Duffy. E.J. as our Stone Cold Newsman, you break it down for us. Yeah, so the Eagles have made, yeah, their first big splash of this, you know, free agency preamble, we'll call it. They signed Jordan Davis to a contract extension.
Starting point is 00:00:43 It's a three-year extension. I can confirm that. And it is reportedly up to $78 million with $65 million guaranteed. The new money in the deal is going to be $26 million annually, which, if you want to look at it that way, puts him as the highest paid nose tackle in the NFL. So a really significant contract for Jordan Davis that rewards him for his play in the 2025 season. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the deal, guys. but yeah, to me, the thing that jumps out, really two things. The first thing is the number here is higher than I would have expected. And then secondly, this is the first mega contract to this coalition of Georgia players
Starting point is 00:01:24 that the Eagles have collected over the years, but I'm not sure it's going to be the last. So, yeah, a big move to start this, like I said, this lead up into free agency for the years. Okay, let's talk Jordan Davis first and where, you know, where the contract ranks and all of that stuff. And then we'll get into what could be coming next. and if this is clearing the way for anything else. But Fran, you have all the work on, you know, where this contract ranks, among other defensive tackles, for a player who was awesome this season in Jordan Davis and took a huge leap forward, rewarded the Eagles for their bet on him
Starting point is 00:01:57 and picking up their fifth year extension, but still was not an impact pass rusher and is barely even on the field on third and long situations. This is a hefty payout. There's no question. And honestly, guys, like for me, my initial talk or my initial take, my initial thought was we used to make fun of the Woody Johnson from Hard Knocks. Like, that's a lot of money. Like when they paid Quinn Williams. This is a lot of money for Jordan Davis.
Starting point is 00:02:25 And to me, you don't give him this contract unless you think there's even more meat on the bone for him to rip into. Unless you think there's another level he is able to take his game to. And honestly, like, this was his best year from the jump, you saw it. Like week one, Dallas at home, looking financial field, you saw it. Like, you know, the late burst that wasn't always there and it showed up throughout the entire season. He maintained that level of play. But to your point, when you look at the other guy, like, that's more than Derek Brown. That's more than Milton.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Milton plays a different spot along the defensive line. But Milton Williams got 20, he got 26 last year from New England. You know, it's more than Nomdi out of Matabeeke. It's more than Aline McNeil. It's more than Duron Payne. It's more than DeFarrest Buckner. Like more than Jeffrey Simmons. like the guys the elites of the elites at the position he's got more than them now and obviously that's how that's how this works but if you asked me a month ago and honestly like e j and i we hashed out in the show a month ago um like all right kind of talking through numbers i did not think he was going to crack this i didn't think he was going to be a ceiling pusher at the position so uh they clearly have a lot of faith in jordan davis not just off the field but that on the field he is going to reach that ceiling now that's 26 million number i think the eagles would
Starting point is 00:03:39 would push back and say up to you he's doing a lot of work here well and i think also it's important to note that he has the fifth year option as a part of the framework of the overall you know the overall picture of the contract right so uh you know he's he's due 12 million next season again the eagles picked up his fifth year option last year so if you if you bake that into this contract he's at 22.5 million and that puts him right in line with dexter lawrence and deron pain which my rebuttal is that's still really good company for jordan davis i i think fran you you said it right where I think you're expecting, you know, him to be a player that continues to ascend at this position. And, you know, I think he's kind of earned the benefit
Starting point is 00:04:18 of the doubt based off the way last year went. You know, he's a high character guy. He's a leader in that in that locker room at this point. So yeah, I think that there is an expectation that his best football is ahead of him. And I think the Eagles are getting ahead of what that might cost if he does take enough leap here. Yeah, I mean, like, Vita Vez is at 178. Like, you know what I mean? Like, well, you think of like the best of the best, Like he is above that. I mean, the franchise tag number at defensive tackle is 27 right now. And so I do think we probably have to not focus so much on the exact number.
Starting point is 00:04:51 But even if 26 is not right, I mean, it can't be realistically that far off with 23, right? Like even that is very expensive for a player who is, has been awesome on first and second down. He's just not on the field on third down. Now, as you say, E.J., he is still, I mean, he just turned 26. This is a player who does still have potentially more to come as a player. And it needs to be said, is the guy in the locker room who, like, they want to keep around? And is sort of the one grabbing the baton from Brandon Graham as the energy giver in that locker room, the guy who keeps everybody up all season long.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And when you play through the grind of a 17 game plus, NFL season, you need guys like that. Yeah. So I think that is a big part of this. But it is also fair to be like, what was the rush to get this done now if this is the number? Yeah, I think maybe the expectation that the number would rise. And, you know, like Jalen Carter's potential extension looms here as well.
Starting point is 00:05:58 You know, I'm not sure what that number is going to look like. Chris Jones is at the top of the defensive tackle market at 31. So maybe there's some, you know, calculation with the. that it's not the strongest free agency class at defensive tackle, but Fran, maybe there are guys that are extension eligible that we're not thinking of that might impact that number. Yeah, the guys that are extension. I'm not looking at the top defensive tackles that are on the rookie deals.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Obviously, Jalen Carter would be at the top of that heap, but then you're also looking at Byron Murphy from Seattle. Kobe Turner with the Rams, who is also eligible with Jalen. I would imagine that gets done relatively quickly here. Brian Brisee from New Orleans, Braden Fiske out with the Rams as well. Those are the big ones, though, guys.
Starting point is 00:06:39 I mean, and that's why, it's interesting. But I do think that the timing is probably relative to Jalen because if you're going to pay if Jalen Carter is going to be up near Chris Jones or past Chris Jones, then maybe it makes sense to do Jalen Carter second so that he, all right, he sets the market. It's not like, oh, Jalen was here and Jordan, you know, didn't quite reach that. I don't know if the timing really makes that much of a difference. if we're talking about, you know, days or weeks in, you know, in separation. But that would be the thing in there, I guess.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Yeah. Yeah. I think that that may be part of the, like, roster arithmetic that you're going, trying to, trying to achieve here. That's something to steal my headphones. Get your own. It's been fun watching you and having it that. I really enjoy that.
Starting point is 00:07:23 And honestly, it's a good feel for an emergency pod. So, yeah, I think we need some of this, you know. But no, I think this makes, do you think, This move and prioritizing it, and this being the cost, makes it more or less likely that a Jalen Carter extension is to come. I'm not sure how much Jordan Davis's extension really impacted the Jalen Carter extension. I'm not sure that the two are quite as linked. Maybe, I mean, I guess if I had to pick one, I'd say it probably means it's a little less likely just because they've invested money at the position. But I think you were always going to extend those guys as a package deal.
Starting point is 00:08:02 And, you know, I think Jordan Davis had earned an extension. I think it was a type of thing. Eagles were going to prioritize. When we talked about this, you know, earlier in the off season, I said, I think it's a no-brainer that you sign Jordan Davis to an extension based off the way he played and based off, again, the belief that he might take another leap here and that this is the time that you want to get this deal done. I wouldn't have guessed the number was this high.
Starting point is 00:08:24 You know, I think, you know, again, Fran and I had talked about Travis Jones as a comp. And he's at 13.5 million. Now, it seems like Travis Jones maybe signed a team-friendly deal. timing might suggest that he didn't really maximize what his market could be. But yeah, I think you're kind of betting on the upside here if you're Jordan Davis. And honestly, even if you're the Eagles, you're betting on the upside making this deal look a lot better in a couple of years. And, you know, I guess the bottom line here is that they have been able to secure Jordan
Starting point is 00:08:52 Davis for a long time. You know, I think we spent a lot of time talking about the number. But the years here, you know, securing the fact that you'll get Jordan Davis for a few more years. Yeah, I do think that that is still the bottom line here in the headline. Fran, do you want to talk to just the actual leap in play that Jordan Davis made this season? Yeah, I think what we saw with Jordan Davis pre-20205 was a guy who had flashes of dominance in the run game and fewer flashes of like real disruptive ability in the past game, right? Like every once in a while, you'd see, oh, man, like there's that one rush where he just
Starting point is 00:09:27 dominates the center, flies in the backfield, and is able to get home to the quarterback. We saw the big pursuit plays. Remember him chasing down Josh Allen along the sidelines back in 2020 and 3. You would see those level of plays, but they were relatively like few and far between. And it was more consistent in the run game and the past game. What you saw this year was obviously the level of dominance was still more prevalent in the run game than the past game, but it was more consistently dominant. Like he was one of the best pure run defenders in football this past year. You could not always say that in years prior, which was fine.
Starting point is 00:09:59 It was always kind of like, you know, betting on the upside with Jordan Davis. But this was the year where it's like, all right, like, yeah, if you are getting this, then I think you could argue like, yeah, he was worth taking at that point in the first round. Now, you would still say, would you rather have Kyle Hamilton? Like, yeah, you still probably have those conversations. But you are paying him again, like, if you are paying, if he gives you what you saw last year off this contract, I don't think it's worth it personally. Like, frankly, I don't think it is.
Starting point is 00:10:25 So I think that you're giving him this money because you think that he's got another level that he can get to with Clint Hart. And I also think, to be fair, the Eagles have consistently been higher on Jordan Davis's value than we have on the outside. You know, I asked Howie at the Combine about, you know, Jordan Davis's season and him rewarding you for the faith that you had in, you know, giving him the fifth year extent, the fifth year option. And he was like, oh, that was easy. You know, we, you know, we've been on Jordan Davis every time. But yeah, it's not like you're getting a hometown discount here based on the numbers that are reported. And Fran, I feel like another thing here, because when we talked about this earlier,
Starting point is 00:11:04 Ali McNeil was the player that I pointed to as maybe like the aspirational number for. Nucks, guys. Fake fist up. I love that. Ali McNeil was like the player that we talked about. And I remember when we looked at it, like, Ali McNeil plays more than Jordan Davis, especially in past rushing situation. So to me, another ripple effect here is like Vic Fangio and Hallie Rosen must have had a conversation.
Starting point is 00:11:29 at some point about he will be on the field more, you know, based off the way that he looked in 2025. But if that's the case, though, does that mean Morrow's walking next year? Right. Like, you have Morrow. If you're going to pay Jalen, like you can't, you get all three play on pass downs. So that's what it, it's a lot of balls in the air. I think there are, I think there.
Starting point is 00:11:50 And somebody said it in the comments, and I think it's fair. I think there are teams in the league who now think that Jailen Carter could be available. I don't think that it's not, it's not an obvious one. one to one, but I think it's, I think it's possible. I think there's still every chance that they extend both of them. I think the moral point is a good one. You don't sign Jordan Davis to this deal if you're sizing up a Moro-O-Jomo contract extension next off season.
Starting point is 00:12:11 I think you're planning on Jordan Davis and potentially Jalen Carter being the guys you build the room around. I don't know. I'm not, I'm not quite ready to say that this is like a reflection on Jalen Carter's, you know, likelihood to sign an extension. I think it is just a bet on Jordan Davis wanting to have him in the building for for several more years. Does this make you move the projection a little bit higher on Jalen Phillips? I'm probably a little, maybe lower on Phillips than I would be higher based off of this, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:44 different positions. They can invest in both of them. I don't know. I don't think that this makes me think they're going to sign. I don't think it makes me more likely. I'm not putting more turkeys on Phillips. Okay. Yeah. No idea. I, I, the thing that makes it, I'm trying to like do the, the, the calculus in my head because this is not my area of expertise would be just because of the fifth year. All right. So you have the fifth year. So really this money, this extension doesn't kick in until 2028. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Yeah. So yeah, I'm thinking that through. I also think we should say, I mean, it is okay to, to as an Eagles fan, it's not your money. No question. It's not, it's, there's a good chance this is not going to constrict their decisions a ton. And so Jordan Davis is a really fun player. really fun personality, a great guy to root for. Great guy for Eagles fans. This is great.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Yeah. I think the headline is Jordan Davis is under contract for another three year, for four years now. And that's a win if you are an Eagles fan who loves Jordan Davis. I think, too, like there's the aspect of it being like only a three year extension. And obviously it's with the fourth year tag or the fifth year tag dog. So it's getting, you know, cementing it for four years. But it only being a three year extension, like, it's good for Jordan because he's going to hit, he hits the market again before he's 30. and also like it gives the team a little bit of flexibility if it looks like it's not going to pan out in their picture. All right, very quick. Let me tell you about our friends at Xfinity.
