Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello everybody and welcome to an emergency podcast live from the Xfinity Mobile studio, Beau Wolf, Fran Duffy, may be joined by E.J. Smith. Free agency frenzy is rolling on. And Fran, we've got breaking news. Here's E.J. Smith. How surprised would you have been if I had told you on Tuesday, March 17th, that the Denver Broncos would be trading a first round pick for a wide receiver and the Eagles would be making a transaction with the wide receiver named Brown?
Starting point is 00:00:39 Look, obviously that kind of both transactions. Red the needle, Marquis, Hollywood Brown is a Philadelphia Eagle finally after the Eagles passed on him to select Andre Dillard all those years ago. Yeah, I think that, look, I think when you look at Hollywood Brown, I think that there's absolutely an area where he can come in and help this team. I do think, obviously, you know, you lose John Dotson. They needed some speed anyway. You know, someone that could kind of stretch the defense.
Starting point is 00:01:12 both horizontally and vertically, and we can get into that in the 2 o'clock show, the impact that Hollywood Brown can have from that end of it. But I do think that this is a guy that can come in it and can certainly fill a role. I just don't anticipate it being like, you know, high volume, we'll say in this Eagles offense. E.J. Smith, our Eagles insider, joining us from what I can only assume is a very fancy car. I mean, look at the open sunroof that you've got. Very impressive. What do we know about the expected terms on this deal? Yeah, I wouldn't expect it to be a significant investment for the Eagles here. I think that this is your Jahan Dotson type of signing here.
Starting point is 00:01:50 So, yeah, and I think it makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of we've talked a lot about like the Rashid Shaheed mold, right? Where I'm not saying this is the same caliber of player, but, you know, just having someone that can change the game with a limited use case where, you know, you want someone who is dynamic, somebody who can affect the defense by being a field stretcher. you know obviously Hollywood Brown had a productive season last year relative to the last few years so I think it's a signing that makes sense but yeah I wouldn't expect it to be significant a significant investment there Hollywood Brown is 28 years old he is 59-180 I think most everybody here knows the book on him smaller but but has some wheels I think the wheels have diminished a bit last year was it was actually a moderately productive year for him in Kansas City 49 catches for 587 yards and if you just do the you know the yards per route run leaderboard across the league. He was, you know, 61st of 170 qualifying wide receivers. That's, that's a lot better than the Eagles have had. And frankly, it's a better track record than Jahan Dotson had before the Eagles traded for him. And so, yeah, if the idea is we want to fill that classic Quez Watkins mold, a guy who can stretch the field, you know, I don't think that we're
Starting point is 00:03:03 going to be expecting a lot of production necessarily from Hollywood Brown. But he is a, he is a, he is a, a capable player who can fill that probably better than somebody else who was available. Yeah, I mean, the thing is when you look at his usage last year in Kansas City, remembering the tumultuousness of the, his authority, of that Kansas City receiving core, you had Rashie Rice was out for the first chunk of the season. So, I mean, Hollywood Brown, outside of Travis Kelsey, was kind of the quote-unquote number one receiver for a chunk of last year. And so they did lean on him.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Now, they need help at wide receiver. There's a reason why they did not bring him back. they chose to keep Taekuan Thornton in that kind of a role. It's kind of like the field stretcher, the stretch player in that offense. So I do think when you look at what Hollywood Brown can bring, there's definitely a role for that. And regardless of A.J. Brown or not, I do think that he can be useful for Sean Manning. Yeah, his, I mean, his target rate was pretty low last year, despite, as you said, them needing somebody to throw the ball to. And his A dot was down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:04:07 So he wasn't exactly used as that field stretcher last year in Kansas City. But, you know, this is in a world in which A.J. Brown stays. This is draft proofing. So even still, they don't need to necessarily force wide receiver, right, E.J. Yeah, I was going to say draft proofing is the perfect way to put it there. Yeah, I think you see the Eagles do this. They've done this at a lot of the positions of need, you know, so far and free agency where they don't want to go into the draft needing to force it. But, yeah, I don't think Hollywood Brown signing is going to preclude that.
Starting point is 00:04:37 from investing in the wide receiver position, even early in the draft. So this is one where you know, you kind of hope that you have a draft prospect that kind of pushes him, you know, and can push him on the depth chart there, but you don't have to force it. And I wanted to add really quick, I'm seeing a Jeff McLean report that the deal is worth up to $6.5 million. So not a significant amount of money. You know, it's maybe a little bit more than you would have expected.
Starting point is 00:05:01 But again, that up to is doing a lot of work there. I think up to is doing a whole lot of work there is my understanding. Now, this will be a different lineup for the Eagles, and your starting lineup is always likely to change. But the price of your internet does not have to. That's thanks to our friends at Xfinity and their five-year price guarantee. So shout out to Xfinity. Thank you for presenting this emergency pod.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Now, listen, we are going to be live at 2 o'clock with a full episode. We'll talk more about Marquis, Hollywood Brown, but, you know, Fran's got to get to the studio. E.J's got to get back on the road, and so do I. So we're going to keep this bad boy short. And make sure you go over to yesterday's 2 o'clock episode and hit that like, button because I think we are closing in. E.J. is just a few lengths away
Starting point is 00:05:39 from having to do the entire show in an Irish accent. I might be asking like my family to unlike the video for once. There's a slight chance I might go in and unlike the video before I leave here. There we go. So it's got to be like 405
Starting point is 00:05:58 is what you're saying. We will sabotage this at the end. In our case, Hollywood Brown is headed to the Eagles. Beautiful stuff. See, the thing is, E.J., that you did this. This is your fault because you had such a terrible accent yesterday, and you spurned that
Starting point is 00:06:15 you were the one who lowered it from 400 to 350. Like, this is all. You're going to be your fault. No, I don't think that's fair at all. Very quickly, very quickly, we will talk about this at 2 o'clock. What was your reaction to the Waddle trade? I mean, the price paid doesn't surprise me. I think that when you look at players of that caliber, you know, that have that kind of X factor.
Starting point is 00:06:40 He's, I think he's a great fit for what they need and for the offense they have. He pairs well with that receiving core. Makes sense. I did think of A.J. Brown. You know, we saw, you know, Baldy said with Cous the other day, he thought Denver might be interested in A.J. Brown. So obviously, that's another shooter off the board. Yeah, that was my first thought is that this takes Denver off the wide receiver trade market. The compensation, I would say probably is a good news for the.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Eagles and they're asking price. I think, you know, you would, you would suspect that AJ Brown would go for a little bit more than Jalen Waddle. But yeah, we'll have full thoughts on it at 2 o'clock. You know, I'm still still kind of ruminating on this one. All right. That'll do it for this emergency podcast. Hollywood Brown is headed to the Eagles to fill that wide receiver three roll previously filled by the likes of Jahan Donson and Kwez Watkins, a field stretcher who still hopefully, as far as the Eagles are concerned, has a little juice left in those legs. And of course, Howie Roseman, scratching that itch, another former first round pick. Free agency frenzy does not prevent Howie from hitting that kink.
Starting point is 00:07:43 So good for him. That'll do it for this episode of the P.HLY emergency podcast presented by XFINITY. Don't miss 2 o'clock. We're talking how the Eagles draft plans may have changed over the past week or so. We'll unpack this signing a little bit more. Some other draft thoughts from The Duff Man. And maybe E.J. getting canceled. Stay with us.
Starting point is 00:08:04 As always, we love you.
