Hello everybody and welcome to the PHLY Eagles podcast, the post game show. After a victory for the Eagles, we are live in the XFinity Lounge and presented by Wawa. And just as they have every year under Nick Siriani and Jalen Hertz, the Eagles start the season 1 and 0. Check out this crew I've got with me here. The future Eagles Hall of Famer, the two-time Super Bowl champion. Brandon Graham is with us. The other BG, BLG. and Lee Gowton is here from Bleeding Green Nation.

We've got a lot to get to. We're going to hear from Fran Duffy and E.J. Smith is going to tell us what's going on in the locker room. And we've got a lot to talk about, including the debut of the Sean Mannion offense. A big day for Dallas Goddard and Tay Wicks. The defense looking great in the first half. And then Morrow Ojimo making the game winning play on the two-point conversion. Let's start now with our big takeaway presented by Xfinity. And let's send this around the horn.

Brandon Graham, you tell me. your number one takeaway from that first game. My number one takeaway was the defense. The defense started the game off. I mean, just phenomenal. And then they ended the game in the right way, even though they gave up some points. But it was winded a little bit.

The offense had to get going. But I thought the defense showed up when they needed to for that last two-point conversion. What are game ones like on defense, especially on defensive line, in terms of being gassed? Oh, man. And not having your body used to it.

Everybody is excited. We all out there trying to make plays. I mean, we're trying to get there for the sacks. We're trying to get the sacks because this is the start of the season. So you want to start off right. So I know them guys was out there. They was tired. All right.

BLG, your number one takeaway. Number one takeaway is that Jalen Hertz stepped up big. He answered that this offense was not operating smoothly. I felt like on their own. It was Jalen making big plays that really carried the team today. And he finishes with three touchdowns, 122.2. Paster rating.

I mean, he came up big when they needed him. Biggest play of the game for Jalen was probably that third and long scramble, right? Yeah. Big one. When the offense was really struggling, the commanders were totally back into the game. And Jalen just takes it upon himself to make a big play. He had two or three really impressive first down scrambles in this game.

Yes, he did. Big takeaway for me, just I want to talk about that play on the two-point conversion, VG, because we're sitting there with you and you're a wide. watching it and you say, oh, here comes a play inside. So what did you see and what did Moro Gimo see that gave away that play call on a two-point conversion? Well, I seen that the back was out.

So I knew that, okay, the tight end roaching in in. And I know that we go over shovel pass all the time. And so I was like, man, it's something coming inside because the tight end coming back inside. The back is out. Sums up. And so, Mo, he came off the ball. He did a spin.

They did like a little twist, I want to say. I mean, I don't know if he did it intentionally, but he was in the right space at the right time. And, yeah, man, stopped that play. And so, yeah, I knew we, I knew that we had went over that play, the shovel play. And when he came back inside, I was like, man, it had to be something coming inside or I thought it was going to be a run. You called it. That was very cool to watch you call that. And a huge play.

And listen, the defense, as you said, was gas, did give up two fourth quarter touchdown drives as they were trying to hold on to this game. but you make the play at the end. And I know that you would say like a very characteristic Jalen Hertz, well, a win is a win. We will take it especially in week one. 100%. Some early superchance from James Dowgan getting involved, just giving us the super chat. We appreciate that. Let's start with the offense because I think we were all so curious about what the offense was going to look like with, Jaylen Hertz and Sean Mannion and all these new pieces. No A.J. Brown. Jalen finishes 14 to 25 for 203 yards, three touchdowns.

Now, most of the action went to Dallas Goddard and Tontavian Wicks in terms of the yardage. Goddard had the two touchdowns, including the 43-yarder, which gave the Eagles the game-winning touchdown. What did you see on that play, B.G? I just seen that they almost messed it up. They almost far started on that one. We kind of got away with one. Rasul was asking for it.

Yeah, we definitely got away with one. But, I mean, they got away with a couple. Well, I just seen Dallas Goddard go straight up the middle, catch it, and then stuck his foot in the ground. And, man, oh, boy, thought he was going one way, went the other way. And, man, Dallas, I mean, as you say, he looked slow, but that boy really fast. Well, yeah. He runs like he's slow.

Yeah. But, you know, he's running away from guys. It's just like the gate that he has. And we were talking about it, like, just feeling good for Dallas Goddard in a game like this, because this is a guy who, the last couple off seasons, it's been, you know, Howie Roseman is kind of nickel and diming him a little bit. He clearly wants to be back. They're holding the line.

You know, that's what a GM does. That's understandable. But Dallas Goddard clearly loves being an eagle, wanted to be here. And, you know, for him to have a big day in week one, I thought it was good for him. I'm proud of him, because I know how that feels. Definitely proud of him. Two touchdowns. Help win the game.

And, I mean, I know it's more to come. Plus, he's rocking with Jalen on the mustache. Yeah. That's important. That's important. Very important. BG, you look like you can rock that day too. Not straight up.

I got the little beard too to parrothel, but I appreciate it. I appreciate it. Thank you. You got the piece fuzz under it too. Boy, you look, you good. What did you like in Jalen's performance today, BLJ? Yeah, again, really encouraged.

Offense as a whole. I mean, this wasn't like the success rate, like down-to-down consistency from this offense that I think we'd like to see. And I felt like you got by with living with those big plays, but that's the value of those, right? Like, that's why explosives are so important. They can kind of cover up for the lack

consistency there. I mean, some of those throws he made, that throw to Devante along the sideline. That's a great throw. He was making some really big plays. That run you talked about, Bo, it's on third and 18. Unbelievable. Like, those are extremely clutch. Like, gotta have it plays, and he stepped up.

To your point, by success rate, which is what you're talking about, down-in, down-down consistency, if you were to compare it to all of the games that Jalen played last year, this would have been 12th of their 17 games, right? 37.1% according to true media. But EPA per dropback, which is, you know, how much are you actually those, factoring in those big plays, it would go, it's more like, you know, eighth of those games. So listen, we talked in the off season about we have to be willing to be patient with an offense that is completely new.

And I thought the biggest thing was the running game just did not really look in sync. Yeah. And I think if we had thought really more about it, that is the thing that's probably going to take a little bit of time. I think so. I mean, from what it looked like, it looked like his footing was kind of, kind of off a little bit, too.

He was sliding. I mean, normally in the link, they always, they feel it's pristine. And so for me, I don't know what that was all about. I know that he's usually really good with his footing,

but he just looked like he was sliding everywhere. And then, I mean, it's sad to say that Landon had a rough day to day, too. You know, that was tough. I do think we need to get into that, and I know that there are a lot of people

in the chat talking about that, but Landa, Dickerson did not look great in this game today and was at fault a few times. Also called for a few penalties, right, BLG? At least two holding penalties. Our jargon said two, Dickerson had won, I believe. Okay. So not great.

But they won the game. They won the game. Tay Wicks, what did you think of, first of all, the bomb completion, the first, you know, one that Jalen gets to unleash, and then really nice throw from Jalen on the touchdown with two guys coming in his face. He's fading away, and he gets into a touchdown for Tay Wicks. I like, I like Taye. I like that he came in with the energy.

I mean, man, I got to meet him, got to be around him a little bit. Devante's softball game. Okay. Man, he's funny. So I just knew that. And then when I started to see some of his clips, explosive, somebody that Jalen can trust. Well, he built that trust for the deep ball and went out there and put that on display, man. And I was happy that they had that connection.

He goes two for 73 for a touchdown and then back to Saquan. 15 carries for 83 yards, but had a 42-yarder in there. So that's doing a lot of little work there. Anything else on offense in this initial run-through that you want to talk about PLG? Well, with Wicks, too, he has the 64-yarder. His previous career-long reception was 36 yards. Really? That's crazy to go that big of a jump.

I mean, that makes sense from a standpoint of you don't think him as a burner. He hasn't been that guy, but I liked his tracking ability on that deep catch. And then you saw the route running too on the touchdown. I mean, he hooked Mike Sandler still. And that's something Nick has really been talking up and part of the reason they liked him from Green Bay. So I felt really encouraged by that showing. The rushing success in this game would have been their fifth worst, if you compared it to last year.

So that really was, I think, what was holding them back in terms of not being able to move the ball for most of that second half. It was kind of familiar seeing the offense put up points in the first half and then struggle in the second half. But credit to Jalen Hertz for leading that touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. Let's run through some of the superchats, because I see we got a lot of action from the people fired up about the Eagles starting the season,

want to know. Papa Taco 9 says love Landon, but it might be time to explore other options. He looks like he can't move out there with another super chat from Papa Taco. I mean, it's an interesting question about how you handle something like this from a coaching staff and GM perspective because this is a pro bowl player

who has helped you get to the mountaintop and is making a lot of money. You probably owe him a few games, but if he's going to continue playing like that, I think they are going to have to have a hook. I don't know. It's a delicate thing. Going back to what Howie even said after the roster cuts,

he said, what would he say his biggest concern was? Was the interior offensive line depth? Why are you worried about that? If you feel great about the starters. And going back to training camp, I think specifically against the Patriots, watching, Bow and I saw this rep in one-on-one where you just saw Lannin getting driven back

in a way that I did not recognize. Yeah. And then even later in camp, too, he kind of just looked like, he's a tough guy. So obviously he's out there. But after some of these reps, he'd kind of just be like stumbling around. Tumbling bad. Like it doesn't look physically there. And it's sad to see.

I know. Yeah, it's a hard thing because you just feel bad for him because it's very clear that it looks like, at least, his body just doesn't have it. And he wants to be out there. But I don't know. I mean, you know what this is like, BG. When you are putting stuff on tape and the whole team, is watching film. Yes.

Like there's no hiding. It's no hiding. Everybody watching the same thing. And it's up to coach to talk about it if it gets out of control because it's about us winning as a team. And we don't want to hurt the team either. And so I think that they need to have conversations with him and be honest with him. And I know he's going to be honest.

Everybody's got to be honest in that because, I mean, what we're trying to do? We're trying to win. Yeah. And if Markell Bell got to go outside or if Fred even go inside, you know, whoever to kind of know. You got Willie Lampkin. Those are the other possibilities there. Yeah.

Like Willie, Willie definitely had a good one. But, you know, it's like, I know that it's, as an old lineman, they play most of the game. Yeah. They play 90%, 95% in the game. And if we got to take some reps off, off Landon, bring some people in, it's okay, too. Well, it's also interesting thinking about what Lyndon Dickerson said this summer about last year, where he acknowledged that he probably came back and tried to play through injury too soon.

And in retrospect, wishes that he had taken some time. I wonder if this is a kind of thing. thing where he's got some injury that they can put him on IR with and let his body rest and see if that helps and give him some time off, you just, you wonder. I wonder. I definitely wonder. I know that the bullets are flying now. He's not trying to go on IR and sit around for a little bit. If anything, if he's not having such a good game, hey, man, we got to put somebody else in. And really, you don't want to do that because when he start, the other person started playing good, then it's like you kind of get left behind.

And you get these awkward locker rooms. Yeah. Yeah. It's a tough situation, but you got to be honest if that's what we try to do. We're trying to win. Philly Raj also chimes in with a super chat on this front, says overreaction, but still asking how long do they play Dickerson over Drew Kendall? I do think that Drew Kendall is probably the first guy to get a shot if they do make a move there.

Philly Raj says, more surprised or disappointment. Lack of running game or the defense's performance. I don't think that you can get on the defense too much here. knowing that. No, you can't. It's week one. Yeah. You got to give a little credit to the opposing offense.

Antonio Williams looked good. Jane Daniels made some plays with his legs. I thought that, you know, Cooper DeGine had a relative, just from the TV copy, a relatively down game based on your expectations for him. I'm not worried about Cooper de Gene. I'm not worried about them at all. Everybody's allowed to have a bad game every now and then. The defense, the defensive line was very active.

They didn't get home a lot because Jane Daniels is so elusive. Good word. In the backfield. but I thought the guys up front were Russia. Yeah, they was Russian. I mean, Nolan and Jaylix both five pressures in. Then we was blitzing down the middle. It's just Jaden Daniels is one of those guys that you got to keep contained.

And I know coaches definitely going to point that out in film study. Like, look, if we're going to win games, we got to be able to follow up guys because I'm sure they got a bunch of guys coming down the line. And so I'm excited for what Vic going to say to him. But I ain't worried about the defense. I'm not, I don't think I'm worried about it. Yeah, I ain't worried about it. Super chat from Pat Fienis.

Carson Wentz out there throwing shots, explosives. Poo-P-Phew! Little JG shot out there. Nicely done by Pat Finas. Andrew O'Rourke, ugly. O-Line needs some fresh blood. All they have been saying is how much easier this scheme is for them. That didn't look easy.

B.G., how do you feel about being on the other side here and seeing how people are not that happy even after a win? I just know how people overreact. And it's okay. Let, I mean, get it out. it out but you got to enjoy your win too you got to enjoy the journey because when we when we win people gonna remember what you were saying and so make sure you clip those pin them up there pin the ones that be talking right now and then at the end you know we see what happened like that

them birds i'm still i'm still a i'm still a player at heart right now of course but you know it's good to see you know and i got to take my emotions out of it ex mojo says the commies were loading the line of scrimmage and blitzing heavy i think jaylin played well and 26 was close to a home run a couple of times. I'm encouraged. Yeah, I think that's fair. That's fair. Re-Landin and Cam, says Cori Sito. My buddy had the same sem cell treatment in Columbia over his spine and said after a few weeks,

he was back to the same pain as before. That's amazing insight. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That's very funny. Because I would hate for that to be the real case. And I know he probably telling the truth. That's funny. And then a whoa both. says feeling pretty good about the team effort and the win.

Congrats to Siriani Hertz duo remaining undefeated week one. Sidebar, that was all pro-Cupert Dijin getting the tightest whistle on the field. Yeah, he did get, he got a couple really tick-ie-tack. Yeah, especially that first one. That first one was a little bit. First one, you're supposed to be able to jam him, you know, at least five yards.

He was like probably four yards. But either way, that first one was terrible. The second one, I give it to him. Okay, he might have grabbed him. But, okay, nah, what we got, Rasul Douglas tackling wicks on the, one player. And it was just like, no call. So it's like, all right, I mean, we won the game, man. That's just something that the rest got to get better with. Now, to your point on the

defense, let's run through this a little bit because there were one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven possessions in this game, and twelve possessions in this game for the commanders. And the Eagles start out, give up a field goal on the first drive. Then it's three and out, three and out, three and out, one first down and punt. Then you give up a touchdown. down, then another punt, missed field goal, another punt. Like the defense, until those final two drives, it's very clear that they were a little bit gassed, was pretty dominant.

They were dominant. They was dominant. And it's the first game, too. Of course, emotions are high. Everybody is just the first game. And it's a little humid out there. Today, when I was out there, I don't know why I got these things on, jogging pants on, but it was wet.

I got the hoodie. It's a little cooler in here. Yeah, it was wet earlier. Then next you know the sun come out. and it got human again. And I was just like, yeah, it's going to be one of them days for the guys. But luckily they wasn't in the Tampa or something. That's right.

Because it would have been even worse. Now, the guy in the middle of that defense, so we have not talked about yet, who looked like arguably the best player on the field in this game, Zach Bond, 12 tackles, you know, diving PBOs, making plays all over the place. It is so fun to watch him play. Hey, that boy, man, I'm so proud of him because, man, he was just a special team player that everybody said, oh, he's going to help us on special teams. And he become this all-pro, man,

defensive player of the year, candidate, you know, that type of player. And, man, he out there just doing his job and really leading them boys. Man, I've seen a guy to go from people not even knowing what they're going going to get and, man, coming in and being a straight dog and a leader. And I'm just, man, man, I got much respect for that because them underdogs, man, you don't know what they're going through. And they mind.

You don't know how they're working. You just know one day you look up, like, Zach Barron, they had what, 12 tackles? You know, he, oh, man, he got a pick. I mean, I thought he was going, that was a nice pick. I'm going to like, it was a pick, just couldn't get the feet down, boy, but, man, that was something. And he's smiling afterwards. Oh, oh.

Man, I love Zach, and I think he's a great addition. First time captain. And I got to give it to Vic, because Vic is the guy that said, hey, he wanted to play D.N. He wanted to be in our room, and he really fought for that. But then coach was like, man, trust me. Like, you know, I know you're going to be mad at me, but this is what you're doing. And once he bought into that, you see what he did. I mean, you see what he's doing.

How early in that 20-24 season were you like, oh, man. Those guys are freaking good. Oh, man. I want to say the first game I really was like, but I can remember just one guy, and that's cool, was the Bengals game when he was out there dog. But if I had to say Zach Barn, hmm, hey. Is that first game in Brazil? He had two sacks in that first game.

Yes, the first game in Brazil. Yeah, he did. It was Brazil. It was Brazil. I had two sacks. I mean, in the game. And then that's when you first got his right here. That's when you first got that right after the end of the game.

So yeah, it was that first game. I just couldn't think I forgot we went to Brazil. I'm always so fascinated by guys like Zach Bond on defense in particular who are like in your day-to-day life when you see him in the locker room. It's kind of like quiet, nice guys. And then you get on the field and they are like the most ferocious. You just flip that switch. It's such an interesting thing to me. Yeah.

You got to be able to turn that, flip that switch. Because, man, sometimes it's like, for me, I know a nice guy off the field, all that. But it's just like, man, you're taking money on my pocket, boy, if I can't get to you or I can't get to that quarterback. And I got to go through you, you know, so you got to just, you got to have that, you got to have that tenacity about you, you know. What did you think of the way that Nick Siriana handled the game today, the LG? Well, one thing on Bond real quick. I wish he would get more national love. I feel like he doesn't get that enough.

And Fred Warner is great to be clear, but we all talk about Fred Warner so much. Like how far behind Fred Warner is Zach Ball? It's like not that far. Like he's really good. I totally agree with you. Like I don't think he gets a national love. So let's start that campaign.

Let's get Zach some more national love. On Nick today, I don't know that he had to do a lot of heavy lifting. I think he could have afforded to be a little bit more aggressive at times, which is on brand. And the first half there, we'd call the timeouts

when commanders are backed up against their own end zone. Yeah. I would have really liked to see them go for two. I didn't expect them to when they score that touchdown to go up eight because if you get it, then you're up two, it's two yards to go up two possessions,

to get an extra possession. They didn't, obviously. So I guess I'm kind of nitpicking there, but I would have liked to see a little more aggression. It wasn't no fourth down, go for it. Just the one at the end of the end of the end of the first. Just one. I think that was kind of on the fence, though.

Yeah. I'm not going to crush them for that. Yeah. We normally at least have like three. Right. Because we did have a fourth and two. We had a couple, a couple shorts. And so I thought that we, it wasn't enough to do touch push. But if you had to guess what kind of message is Siriani giving the guys in the locker room?

He's just giving guys like a win. But we're going to get this film right. And I know he'd say enjoy it because we're going to enjoy it. Then we're going to flush it. Then we're going to move on to the next. but I know that a win we always try to enjoy. Okay. Fair enough.

We can make it happen. All right. Let's bring in the great. Fran Duffy to break down some of the things that we saw in this game. Fran, I know that you like us, maybe even more so, excited to see what this Sean Mannion offense was going to look like. What were your initial impressions? Yeah, I mean, I was interested to see just like,

all right, the things that we saw over the course of the spring and the summer, how much of that was going to carry through into the regular season. And obviously, look, we expected that there was going to be some bumps along the road, that it wasn't going to be all hunky doory right out of the gate. And I think that was the case. We saw a handful of three announced, which was reminiscent of last year, you know, some of the same inconsistencies. That said, I thought that there were some really good things to take away as well. And I'm excited to dive into the tape tomorrow and really kind of get into the nitty-gritty of it.

But just based off what we saw off the TV copy, I think there's definitely reasons to continue to be optimistic about this group moving forward. All right. Where would you like to start as we break this all down? So I want to go sequentially, just like, you know, what we saw early on in the game and just kind of work our way through. One of the first plays, one of the breakdown, just to get like, all right, you know, it's, uh, because all these broadcast crews, they're, they're getting their sea legs on it. It's preseason for them as well. So we didn't get a ton of great replays on some of these plays, but, uh, was able to get a handful. So I figured let's start with a sack of Jalen Hertz, uh, where Frankie Louva was able to get home.

You guys have talked about Landon Dickerson. I know that's a big topic in the chat. So I thought, you know, let's, let's kind of start there, have some of those conversations and, and get into some of the issues that he might be having, uh, I guess, at this stage of his career. All right, let's check it out. From Washington. You're going to get a bunch of guys up in the line of scrimmage. We talked about that this week, that this is kind of a hallmark of not just Dan Quinn

and what he's done in recent years, but you know, you look at Durante Jones coming from Minnesota. That's a lot of the things that they've done in the past under Brian Flores. So you're going to get those linebackers up on the line of scrimmage. It felt like every designated passing down, that's what you saw from this Washington team. So you get a bunch of guys up in the line of scrimmage. You get Sonny Stiles. He's about the dropout.

Here's Louvoo. Now, what you're going to get here from the Eagles, is they're going to slide the protection to the right. So you're going to get Cam Juergens working this direction, and you've got a double stunt from Washington here. They're working two stunts, one on the inside with their two defensive tackles, 90 and 94, but the one that we want to keep our eye on here

is going to be from 98 O'Dafe Owe and Frankie Louvo. And they're going to run a TE stunt here where the tackle in this instance is actually going to be Frankie Louvo, and he's going to work inside, and he's going to try and pin the inside shoulder, of Jordan Milata and Oway is going to work up field. He's going to buy time for Louvo to be able to get home and then he's going to loop inside. Now, what happens here on this play and the reason why the pinner is actually able to get home, honestly, BG, this reminds me a lot of the

sacks that you guys have had going back from the entirety of your career on plays like this where you're going to see that the offensive line, Landon Dickerson and Jordan Milata, they get off level, right? There's too much space in between those guys, vertically. And so what you're going to see, Louvo is going to cross Landon Dickerson's face. Here's Landon. He's going to cross his face and attack that inside shoulder of Jordan Milata. And you

can just see when Landon goes to throw his hands, his feet kind of get stuck in quicksand here. So what you'll see is that there's just too much space. This is what you don't want if you're the offensive line. You can't have this much space to be able to work through because now you're creating a lot of really wide rush

lanes for these guys to get home. And so Oway is trying to bend off of off of Louvoo's inside hip, but it essentially becomes a sack here for Louvoo to be able to get home for Jalen Hertz. And I think what we're seeing is a lot of the athletic limitations, you know, from Landon over the course of these injuries that have really, he's sustained over the last couple of years. It seems like they've kind of caught up to him. We saw that over the course of the summer. I know he was kind of working a little bit on a pitch count and was a constant rotation with Drew Kendall. We'll see if that's something that continues here in the early stages of the regular

season. Do you feel BG like that's what Fram broke down? That is kind of a BG level sack, the way that they work that? That's accurate because when you get the guard to turn and I can touch the inside shoulder of Jordan Malada as he's, as the end is coming and keep him occupied, it's like you want him to get through first because now either Landon got to come back and get the end that's coming in or he got to stay with me. But either way, it's going to be a two-on-one because I'm going to be bumping.

Jordan, as I'm coming through as the penetrator, and then whoever's coming around, either he's going to come off, I get the sack, or the end get the sack. And so let me ask you if, you know, after this game, now opposing defenses are going to kind of circle Lyndon and Dickerson. And be like, maybe this is a guy we can take advantage of. What are the ways in which you would do that in the game plan? Well, you got to start sliding to his side because now what you thought was because we paid big money on both sides.

like you don't really you don't really have to do him because most of the time he hold his own but now you got to help him out a little bit and i understand that that's part of it and if that's where the communication has to come in where it's like look put your pride to the side we got to help you out and we're going to help you out by either having the end chip uh well having um sayquine chipped in and we slide the protection or or um if we do leave you one-on-one like like Sequin and go through the middle to try to chip his guy and then get out. Instead of chipping the end, he had chipped the inside tackle. It's so many different ways that they're going to help him.

But if he can't have another game like this, this was tough for him. Okay. Let's get to the first touchdown pass from Jalen Hertz, Fran. A familiar play in the red zone that worked on pretty well this time. Yeah, stop me if you've heard this before. The Eagles come out in a two-by-two set. So you've got Jalen Hertz in the shotgun, two receivers to his left. left, two receivers in his right? They're running fourverts, guys. They're running four receivers

right down the middle of the field. And basically he's going to kind of play sides here. Does he want to hit Dallas gotter or does he want to hit the rookie McKay Lemon? And obviously, this was a play that is infamous for some Eagles fans based off how last season ended crunch time against the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs. Now, this is a different coverage. So it's a different outcome, all those things. But I do think it was, the irony is not lost on me that they come out and they were able to nail this play for the first touchdown of the 2026 season. And here's the reason why this one works. I mentioned it's a different coverage, right? It's a different look. Now, I mentioned that Washington, again, it's third and goal. You got the mug front, right? You got a bunch

of guys up in the line of scrimmage. You've got four defenders over top here. This is going to be a disguised version. You wouldn't expect this based off this look pre-snap. This is going to be a version of Tampa 2. And 4-Verts is a great call against Tampa 2 because you're essentially going two-on-one against that middle zone defender, that Tampa 2 middle linebacker, and you're going to make him wrong. And that's exactly what Jalen Hertz and the Eagles do on this play. You're going to get the safety he's dropping as that Tampa 2 middle player. You're going to get the two high safeties. Here's your corners underneath. The other mug defender, those other mug linebackers, they're dropping out. So you had seven defenders up on the line of scrimmage, but it's still only going to be a four-man

rush, one, two, three, four. Everybody else dropped out. And so if you can kind of see, based off of the way that I drew this up, the void in the coverage in Tampa 2 is right in the middle of the field. If you're not going to go right for those turkey holes, Bo, you know, underneath the safety over top of the corner, you got to go down the middle of the field and attack this Tampa 2 middle linebacker.

And so the best way to do that is with these routes in the middle of the field, those seam routes, in that four-verts concept. And so Jalen Hertz, what he's going to do is going to drop back. And what you're typically going to do, if you're the quarterback, that first throw you're going to lean towards, whichever way that Tampa 2 middle linebacker here, it's a safety,

whoever that player is, if he is turned this way, then you're going to throw opposite. You're going to throw the other way. If he was flipped around this direction, well, then this ball's going to go to Mackay Lemon. So Jalen sees this right off the bat. He knows, all right, that the middle linebacker is dropping from my left into the, or from my right into the middle of field.

His hips are turned towards the opposite way. I'm hitting Dallas got it here all day. This is going to be a touchdown. I'm going to loft this up and over the defender. He puts it up high where only Dallas can go and get it. Outstanding throw, great catch. First touchdown of the season. Really good execution in the red zone.

Third and long, after the negative play there on second down. Really nice job here, the Eagles offense and Jalen Hertz. Responding to adversity and coming through for six. Well said. Well broken down. And then another red zone touchdown comes from Jalen Hertz. And this one's probably a more impressive play by Jalen than even that one. Yeah, this was really well-timed from Jalen.

And there were a number of other players. that stood out on this play as well, at least just from what we've seen from these angles. I want to give some love to tank Biggsv. And then obviously, Don Tavian Wix as well, Wix's first touchdown as an Eagle. So the Eagles come out here, another two by two set in the red zone. You're going to get two receivers to his left, two receivers to his right. And it starts as a three by one set. Wicks had already come in motion.

We're going to get to the motion here in a little bit. Now, what we see here from Washington, you've got a bunch of guys up on the line of scrimmage once again, but it's going to be a disguised pressure where you're going to get a cross-dog blitz here from Washington. They're going to stand both of these linebackers here on a cross-dog pressure, and they're going to drop out both defensive ends. So what we see here on this play is that the first defensive end, O'Dafay-O-Way, he's going to pick up Dallas Goddard one-on-one in man-to-man coverage. The other pass rusher, Caleb on Chasen, he's going to drop out, and he's actually going to be like the whole player in cover one, and it's man-to-man

across the board otherwise. So you've got straight man-to-man across the board with one defensive end lining up kind of like in the as the middle hole player and one deep safety. So this is just straight cover one. It's disguised and you got a blitz and all that. So it's an exotic look at it. But it's basically just going to be cover one. So Jalen at this point, if he knows he's got cover one, you're kind of playing matchups here.

And after Don Tavian Wix comes in motion from right to left, he's going to work this deep out route against Mikey Sanders still. And he's going to come clean. But what I want to do here is really going to highlight Tank Bigsby, because Bigsby does a phenomenal job here on this play of sorting through the trash. He's the running back here in pass protection. And I mentioned that you've got, I'm going to go here blue on the Blitz. You've got the cross dog pressure of these two linebackers.

Now, the way that the protection typically has said is that one of these linebackers, that's going to be Bigsby's man, right? And so Biggsby is going to step up to take on Louvo initially. So he takes on Louvo. The second looper is going to be on Landon Dickerson, that cross dog action here. So Biggsby steps up. He takes on Louvo. You can see that the second linebacker, 53, that's on Landon Dickerson.

Now, Dickerson lets him cross his face, and he is actually going to get past Landon Dickerson. So Bigsby impacts Louvue and then does a phenomenal job of picking up the second rusher. So he blocks Louvo initially, falls off, picks up the second linebacker. You can see Dickerson kind of turns around. He lost his man of protection. Bigsby picks up too. Jalen does a great job here of staying poised. I understand, hey, I might be, I might be even like a little lukewarm, even if I'm not,

it's not going to be a free rusher. This is a spot throw from Jalen. He trusts that Dantavian Wix is going to break open here. And you could see, like, Wix has not entered the end zone yet. He is not even close to breaking this route off. And Jalen is going to basically hit a fadeaway jumper here and put this to a spot where only Wix can get it. And so that's what we saw that, really, that relationship and that trust really developed over the course of the summer when you had Mackay Lemon and Devante Smith out. Those guys really got to work on their sense of timing, and I thought that showed up on this play.

Now, Tom Brady showed this in the broadcast, where you've got Wix coming in motion. This is before the snap. He comes in motion from right to left. Santer still is following him in motion, again, giving Jalen that pre-snap indicator that it's going to be man to man. And they wondered on the broadcast. They said, well, if all the help is in front,

you've got a safety in the middle of the field, you've got the pass rusher, chasing. He's going to play as the middle of the field defender. that's where his help is. Sanders still's got to be playing this outside leverage. He's got to be forcing Wix inside to his help. But because of the motion and the timing here, it's easier for him to kind of bust this coverage

just because he's got, he's like, all right, I got to follow my man. You're creating an unforced error on the defense. And that's one of the benefits of the pre-snap motion is that you can create these kind of mental errors for defensive players. And so, yeah, Santer still absolutely bust this coverage, but you also have a phenomenal rapid. from Dantavian Wix where he is going to hold this vertical,

and we hear this from our friend, Bo, from Coach Flynn, that fast vertical stem, hold that vertical stem. He's going to work vertically up the field, and after that initial break, some guys, they might lean this way, or maybe they oversell it and they lean inside before breaking outside. He does a great job, Wicks, of holding this vertical as long as he possibly can before snapping this off to the outside. And so he does a finish.

phenomenal job. And you can see he kind of freezes Santer still here with this kind of stutter at the top of the route. Does an outstanding job. Phenomenal separation here. And again, the ball is already basically going to be there for Wix. And it ends up being a diving touchdown in the corner of the end zone. So you had the pre-snap motion that helped set up the unforced error by Sander Still. You had the great throw from Jalen Hertz, great timing with Wix. And then the outstanding pass protection from Bigsby all lead to this big play. BLG, we heard so much about how good Wix is against Mank You saw you saw the shake there that we also saw up in New England and those joint practices.

Yeah, some of those one-on-one clips that were going around too that were posted. This guys couldn't stay with him. He was making them look silly. So I think that's something that's absolutely going to continue to be a factor here. All right. What do you got for us next, Fran? I think the touchdown at the end of the game. Yeah.

And this one, this is a tough play. It's a pick play for Washington to try and tie this up with just under or just about a minute left in the game. And this was, to me, it seems like, and I haven't heard any of the quotes in the locker room yet, this seems like it's a busted coverage from Rik Wollin. Now, we're going to take a look here at this play where you've got four DBSs over the top. And what it looks like Marcus Epps calls for is, you know, what I know is a banjo call, an inside, outside call for the secondary. And you can actually see at the top of the screen, Quinnion Mitchell and Drew McCuba,

they actually run this as well. Basically, what happens in a banjo call, if you've got two defenders, okay, whoever runs inside and whoever, runs outside, like whoever runs outside, that's going to be the outside corner, and whoever runs inside, that's going to be to the safety. Well, you could see that up at the top of the screen, McLaren is lined up in the slot. He runs outside. Quignan Mitchell picks him up. And then you've got the outside receiver. He's working inside. Makuba picks him up. So you can kind of see that that's not how this plays out at the bottom of the screen, where you're going to get the tight end is

going to work vertical. Rick Wolland kind of gets held up on him. And then the slot receiver, Williams, he works to the boundary. Epps gets held up here from that rub route. And you can see the frustration with Epps here. After the, as the ball is caught, he looks at RIC like, man, like, you missed the call. And so you kind of see the frustration there from Epps on that play. It ends up being a touchdown. But to me, that was a busted coverage there on the goal line.

Something they'll work through, obviously. But it's week one for Rieke willing in a new scheme. Yeah, we're not getting on him too much. but you said the same thing watching BG. Was it like that's kind of day one stuff. Like that's just day one. I mean, I know it's all communication.

I know Marcus Epps is real good back there and communicating. I mean, that happens. It happens. And we move on. We flush it. We stopped him for two. But yeah,

we can't have, we definitely got to make sure we're correcting that. Epps left this game with an injury early and then came back, ended up playing most of the game. You like Marcus Epps, right, in terms of just the guy that he is in the locker room? You know, who he is.

I mean, he was another guy that's grinding, dog in from the bottom. And then he left, went to Oakland, well, Vegas now. And, you know, went out there, got a deal. I think he got hurt in that, too. The second or third year. Yeah, second, third year. And then he ended up coming back to us.

But I know for him when he left, a lot of guys, it was like a void because he was like the guy that, like, bridge everybody together. I mean, somebody that's not scared to, like, call people out. You need those type of guys that's going to address you in a way where, you know, it's respect because they see how you work every day. And one thing I can say, he got a routine and he stick to it. And he's somebody that's a great locker room guy. All right.

I like that. Now, let's get to the game winning play made friend by Morrow Ogimo and tell us what, you know, BG was talking about. Is he said the same thing watching live that once they put that running back in kind of a wide split, he's expecting something coming inside. So that that's it, BG? just the alignment with the fact of the back the back is like outside the tackle and the tight end was coming back in because it's either was a quarterback run or like you say shovel pass and I know we talk talk about those things in the red zone and I know that Vic had went over probably that I just remember that it just came up soon as I seen it was like oh man it's something inside something inside so

just some some stuff that just don't go away well so here on this play I mean I was thinking quarterback run when I saw the alignment I thought all right it's going to is it going to be some kind of QB draw, some kind of QB counter, because I won the tight end came in. That's where my head went. You're, you calling it for the, for the shovel pass live is phenomenal.

And the fact that, so you basically what you're doing is you're trying to get the defense to try and over commit. You're going to try and flash out Rashad White and try and get that, get that defense to widen out. Jail Exxon does a good job here of staying disciplined, but then the big one here on this play for me,

Jalen Carter getting vertical right away. That does it, He does a great job here of just creating that disruption on the pulling guard. Because now what that does is that disrupts the path of the tight end of John Bates here. Because when he catches this pass, he's not able to create any kind of forward momentum. You could see that Carter, he pushes his out, his block basically into Bates's lap. So now if he has any shot, again, he catches this ball. If he falls forward two yards, like they tie the game.

So if he's got forward momentum, he must. might have a shot here on this play, but the fact that he's got to take a little bit of a rounder angle and he can't really build that momentum and kind of run through the catch, Carter does a great job here on this play. And actually, let me bring this back one more time as well, because I really love Morrow. He does a phenomenal job on this play as well, where you can tell, BJ, he probably honestly felt the same way you did because right away, he spins back and is like right there in the alley. He starts as basically on the backside on this play, but he spins out of this.

immediately has his eyes on bait. So Carter gets that initial disruption. You've got Jailix Hunt there waiting. The linebacker Jahad Campbell, he's coming from depth. So he's actually in position to make this play as well. But outstanding job for Morrow Ojimo of just being in position. He makes this play behind the line of scrimmage. But like I said, Jihad Campbell's right there.

Jailix is right there. Jailant Carter ends up on the ground, but his damage is done. He did a phenomenal job of creating that initial disruption and preventing that forward momentum there from Bates. and the Eagles are able to win the game. BG, we talked about this a little bit on the first episode of Unblocked, which everybody can watch Wednesdays at noon, spend your lunch with BG.

But Jalen Carter coming into this season with the, you know, the pressure off a little bit, having been paid, what kind of mindset do you feel like he wasn't coming into? Oh, he's just trying to get in shape. Like, for real, like he's in shape, but it's the game shape. I'm talking about that everybody is trying to get in. And it's the first game. And that boy, he was disruptive today.

He was getting off the rock today. Well, him and Moro. Talk about him being in shape. He played 63 of the 67 snaps. That's what I'm saying. And I've seen him running off a little bit, but I'm just saying like, he's been working. It's a week one.

He's a defensive tackle. Yeah, that boy, I got to give it to him, man. I got much respect for him because he don't come out. Yeah, he will go. And there will be times where you see him kind of like stop going in the middle of a play sometimes, which, like, you can understand because if he doesn't, feel like he can get on this one, you got to take some time, sometimes. Yeah, sometimes, but you just never know what the extra effort can do because you see how stuff

come back, come back around towards you and you'd be like, man, you look silly if you wasn't trying and running to the ball. So I know for him, if he feel tired, get out so the next guy could come in because, I mean, those type of plays, that's when they get you. That's when they get you. That makes sense. All right. Fran, before we let you go, any other final thoughts? What are you going to be most looking forward to watching when you can check out the whole tape the morning. You know, I thought it was interesting. It felt just kind of watching the game as it was a lot of 12 personnel early and then it was a lot of, they kind of got away from it. It felt like a lot of 11 in the final like three quarters. So I'm interested to kind of really

kind of dig my teeth into that. I'll probably start that tonight. But, you know, outside of that, look, there was the run game wasn't quite there. As you guys mentioned, we saw a couple of big flashes, you know, certainly from Sequin. I thought he ran the ball well, but some missed assignments from a blocking standpoint. So I'm excited to dig into it. But overall, to me, the biggest takeaway, wins are hard to come by in the first month of the season, man. We saw some weird games today, important that this team was able to seal this victory, come out with a W, and move to next week. Let me tell you very quickly, according to True Media Eagles, 72% of the time in 11 personnel in this game, since you brought it up. Interesting. 22% of the time in 12. And that just

league-wide, we talked about how the league is going, 12-personals. heavy so far that's the fourth highest 11 personnel percentage in the league this week got it well that's that that matches up now that might have been a personnel thing where it's like hey they're they're short a corner and we want we want them to be living in nickel so and that's why i mean like i want to see like all right when they came out in 12 early on how did Washington respond what did they what were they trying to get them out of that that may have been the case where they said you know our best bet is for them to stay in nickel and in sub package and frankly they were behind the sticks plenty in this game.

I'm not going to get you in trouble talking smack there. But I wanted to talk about... We're off. We retire now, man. We retire. I totally agree with that. It was a really nice job by Mikhail Lemon finding work downfield on that play. and, you know, it's not a sexy thing from a first round wide receiver,

but it's part of what the Eagles like about, Mikhail Lemon, is that he has always been willing to do that dirty work. Yep, and see, you got to keep it up. I mean, because that's what got him here, and that's what's going to open up doors for him and getting plays for him down the line when you do that, when you do the dirty work,

because you get rewarded like that. And so, I mean, he's a rookie. Yeah. He's a rookie coming in, trying to prove himself, and that's a great way to prove it. Now, one thing, BLG, that I did not love, was all of that horizontal stuff. Yeah.

Three catches for negative five yards for a guy lemon in this game. Oh man. When you include the preseason, I think it's nine targets for negative two yards. And we saw a lot of that in training camp, right? Like that's how they were using him. It was a lot of design touches,

but like for short-yardage. And it feels like they're forcing the issue a little too much there, especially early on. I'm not saying you can't play them, but you want them to get better and learn. but I don't know that they have to give him poor targets and have him be such a big fact

he was a big focus early on. I hope that stuff is all just putting it on tape to set something up for a big play down the road. You've got to put that on tape so the defense has to react to it and you hope to spring it down the road. But yeah, I don't think that, you know, Mackay necessarily has the juice

with the ball in his hands that you would need for some of those plays. Joseph Lynch checks in. Victory Limerick. The pass rush did not really land. But they still played a major hand. Special teams were great, but were Philly, we hate, ugly win, and their record looks grand. Not bad.

I know you hate pressures, but from, you know, a little NFL next-gen stats here, they have Jaden Daniels pressured on 19 of his 38 dropbacks, which is actually the tied the highest of his career that he's ever faced. So was the past press like a little bit better than the numbers? Oh, I think so. It was. And you talked about the much rush of it all, too. I mean, Daniels didn't go crazy on the ground for them.

He only had 31 rushing yards. Yeah, he just got those short yardage plays that kept the sticks going. And so I know Nolan had him a couple of times, had his jersey. I mean, he threw away a lot of them, too. He definitely threw away. A lot of throwaways. A lot of throwaways. And so, I mean, 18 of 34, it was just barely over 50% completion percentage,

and he was under that for most of the game. I think the rush was affecting him, no doubt. Yeah. Yeah. Let's get to another super chat. T-Mindful. My buddy said we are T-Gull-Bitties. What's that mean? It is it true?

Go birds. Mikey Faze with a super chat and then blend in the legend. Jalen Hertz used the spirit of Triple T for this dub. I don't get that one. I don't know. Old Green Knee says, Love the Pod. Missed you, B.G. and Green, but enjoy retirement.

Are we ignoring how good Tyler Steen? has been. It's a lifeline in the middle of the O line. I agree with that. I agree. He played good today. Nobody talked about him. That's a great day. And they were, you know, when they were struggling to run, there were a couple times where they then ran behind that right side and Seekwan got, you know, some real positive yardage and steam had two or three where he was like really burying people. Yeah, they trusted them in the end. And I mean, they felt like that's what got that got that Dillard, Goddard to get that big play. You wonder, BLG, if the Landon question, especially long term, means that Tyler

Stain, who is a free agent to soft season, maybe is more likely to come back than we might have thought a year ago. Yeah, that's an interesting one. I think Tyler played better than he kind of got credit for last year. I think, or at least I think too many people were of the mind that run game is bad now compared to what it was in 2024. And the only place, the only different one of the big differences was, you know, Steen in, decked and out.

And I don't think it's that simple to say. And I think Steen's gotten even better. He had a good training camp. He talked about the value of getting to play last year and how much that he feels like he's improved by just being out there. So I feel good about him. And yeah, he might have to be a part of this future.

But I thought on the TV copy, Makuba looked like he had a pretty solid game. Maybe a couple of run fits where he was in the wrong gap, but otherwise, you know, no big plays downfield. No, he came up hitting digs a couple times. I mean, just filling in the gap. Yep. I got much respect for him because he'll put a hat on you. Jahad Campbell played 64 of the 67 snaps. I know I was shocked with that one because B.W. He usually get in there a little more. Yeah. Especially because they was running the ball. And then no snaps for Ty Robinson, that meet. Mm. Mm. There you go.

So on offense, 53 snaps for everybody on the offensive line, as well as Jalen Hertz. And Dallas Goddard played 50, 50 for Devante Smith, 48 for Dontevian Wicks, 37 for Sequin, 35 for Mikhail Emanuel, 18 for Johnny Munt, 10 for Will Shipley, 8 for Darius Cooper, 6 for Tank Bigsbee, two for Cooper to G. And that's for those kneel downs at the end of the game. And then one for E.J. Jenkins. A lot of Michael Lemon. Solid. 63 plays on defense.

That's a win right there. Yeah? I'm just saying, well, no, 67 total. Yeah, yeah. I mean, at least it wasn't in the 90 range. Well, and that's a lot of possessions, too. Yeah, it was. It was a lot of three and ours on our part, too.

Yes. You want to have more plays on ours unless we were scoring crazy. Right. But, yeah. Drip Sensei with the Super Chat says, given this was technically the first preseason game for the offense and defense, what rating are we giving the offense and defense? BLL, you take that one first.

If we're going to give it a grade. What's our scale here? Are we doing one to ten? Are we doing letter grades? Are we doing Gatorade flavors? How are we doing this? Gatorade flavors is interesting. Well, I don't know what that would be.

I don't know. We got to do that to next one. Yeah, I think we need to think about that more. I'll give them a grade. I'll say for the defense, I'm going above average. I think they had an above average game, especially when you factor in any kind of fatigue

with the offense not exactly playing, complimentary football game. I'll say I'll give them a B for the offense. It's harder because the bar was lower. I wasn't expecting them to go out and drop 30 even. But with the inconsistency

and some of the issue, it's a weird situation with the offense because they did some things that I feel really good about moving forward. Jalen looking as good as he did. When the quarterback looks good, you're going to feel good. But when you look at the land end of it all, the offensive line of all, it drags it down. I guess I'll probably go C plus for them.

Yeah. I think I would be a little bit more generous to the offense. Only because of the expectations. Sure. Coming in and knowing all the moving parts. Yeah, maybe B minus. I don't know. It's very marginal.

That is funny. It's funny you say that because I was going to go B minus offense and then I was going to go B plus on the defense. Okay. Because, you know, of course, it's early stages, but them boys was solid until the offense figured it out in the game. And them boys, you know, they got tired and in the end. which is always in the first game.

But I feel like it was B plus and B minus. They didn't play as complimentary as you wanted to, but the defense held up as much as they could into the offense got going. Then special teams, that was, man, I got to go A minus on that. Right, yeah, I agree. I get A minus. And we haven't even talked about it.

MJ mentioned it. We haven't talked about the block by Jalen Carter and how much that affected the flow of this game because otherwise commanders are going to tie the game there at the end. Yeah, it's tied. Yeah. We probably in overtime. Well, that and Stefan Diggs.

That was also really helpful for him to, you know, make a really dumb penalty there. That was so funny. Because I don't think, like, he was not planning on that. He just, like, was running full speed at the pile, at the thing. And he was like, well, I might as well jump on it. He was so excited to make it. Yeah, very funny. Yeah, there were a couple other funny moments in this game.

I like some of the sideline shots. There was the Dallas Goddard doing the tongue thing. And then there was like those close-up shots of Jordan Davis being tired and just like, He was like dead behind the eyes? I mean, he was just looking straight, just looking like, please, he's giving some water. Man, I know that feeling, boy. But it's the first game, and then you start getting more practice, more reps, and then eventually you just start to, it's on you. Because you're going to be tired out there.

Sometimes you've got to decide that I'm running to the ball. I ain't saving nothing. Another super chat coming our way here from Jack Reacher. Ty Robinson is not very good, is what he says. Drip Sensei, given this was technically the first preseason, oh, and we already got that one. Yeah, Drip Sensek in and again, we appreciate that. All right, BLG, let me ask you.

What are you, like, aside from Lennon Dickerson, what are you keeping an eye on this week? I really would like to see the lemon usage go down a little bit, especially... Oh, interesting, okay. Well, you kept Elijah Moore on the roster, a veteran player. He was inactive. You have Hollywood Brown who didn't play a single snap tonight,

which is he didn't look great in the summer. He's getting like $5 million. I'm not shocked from that standpoint. But my point is you have veterans on this team. And even if it's not that, it's Darius Cooper, who obviously I'm on the tank for it. This is just the agenda for you.

But seriously, he's like earning it. He's looking good. It's not that you have to go away from Lemon entirely. I just think you could rotate that spot a little bit more. In fairness to Lemon, I think it's almost like unfair to put all this pressure on him right away. Yes. Well, what about, I don't know if I agree with that.

Because what if it's really more of an investment in, you know, having, you want him to be involved in the second half of the season. So giving him these reps that he wasn't able to get over the summer. But I think there's part of it where he doesn't look like he knows what he's doing at times. And I wonder how much of that is readiness. There was a rep. It was, I think, on that third and four in the red zone where Jalen throws to Godder and they're not on the same page. Right. But didn't you see Lemon too out there?

Why? They're kind of just standing there. I don't know how that factored in. but as I've talked before, late in training camp, he came back from the injury and didn't look like he always knew, like, what was going on. It just seems like there could be some more mental catch-up there.

Yep, I understand that, because you're right. Like, coach, go say something like, when guys are in the same area, it's just like, hey, it's all about spacing. It's all about spacing, and I'm sure they're going to have that. Yeah, there were a couple, there were a couple sort of procedural things going on with the offense, which you would expect week one, right?

Aside from some of the pre-snap penalties, there was that miscommunication with Goddard. There were a couple times like last year, it seemed like the play clock was getting pretty low and the play was getting in late and you saw them have to burn a timeout. And Jalen was kind of pissed after that. And you could see him going like this saying, you know, I need that play in sooner.

But I think we have to give him a little bit of grace. It's week one. Sure. The first time that Mannion's ever done it, you've got to give him sometime. Yeah. Manian who looked very fired up in the booth. He did. Great reaction shots.

I love seeing. We've been used to like, we've been used to the Vic shots in the booth, which are fun. But now that we're getting these like Mannion reaction to touchdowns, those were good. Man, that was good. Now, I don't, do you think that that was his diet Pepsi, or do you think it was the guy next to him? Big question.

That was his. I think confidence. If you got to guess, it was his. Dinklberg with a super chat says defense was largely awesome tonight, even without the gush. Looking forward to the impact that Gernard will have on the defense when he returns. Yeah, what do you think about that? Because Granard practiced limited this week, not quite ready.

If I had a guess, I would think week three is when he plays, but, you know, could be as early as next week. What kind of impact will that do for the defensive line? It's going to be big. It's going to take a lot of reps off Jaylix and Nolan. So, yeah, those guys going to be firing, especially with the middle, being rushing the way they're doing right now. Man, I'm excited. This defense could be scary.

And, you know, hopefully Coup have a better day. I know to Coup, it was rough for them the day out there. I don't know what was going on. Normally Coup be out there, dog. But I just chalk it up to that one game. that you're just going to see and it's the first game. Yeah, I think, I think Coop has earned it. He definitely earned it.

Us not being worried about. Yeah, I'm just saying, you know, it was, that's the guy. I got on, I got on my fantasy too. You got a defensive fantasy? Yeah, well, so on Sleeper, on Sleeper, they, on the app, they have, you have like, pick, like, lineman or D-Line, linebacker. So you're just turning into a fan. Wow.

He was mad at the players on his fantasy team. Well, not even that. It's just like, I'm like, Dan, I just started Coop because I'm like, yeah, Kooke by to go out there. He's going to get one. He's going to get a pick. But I know that it was just one of them games for him. I saw Jeff McLean mentioned that he saw Cooper to Gene

like wincing at one point after coming up after play. I don't think he left the game or anything, but maybe there's an injury there too. Yeah, probably dealing with stuff. I mean, it's been a long training camp for him. And I know it probably was a lot asked of him, moving to safety, moving around, trying to figure out who's going to be what.

And, yeah, I'm just chalked up because I know Koot. I mean, he's a dog out there. So I just didn't like seeing him, especially against Stefan Diggs, too. I was just like, man, go clamp that boy. But I know he good. But it's just like, at the same time, I'm just like, come on, Coup.

Smith, our friend who was there at the link today and just spent some time in the locker room talking to the players.

We'll hand it over to you, E.J. for your notebook. All right. So I got a lot of notes for you. I'm about to empty the notebook. I got it right here. Got my Hennopacati in the locker room here. And I think we have to start with Jalen Hertz. He was a, you know, much discussed player in the locker room,

you know, unprompted players would talk about the fact that Jalen really carried this offense in moments where they needed him most. Obviously, the 22-yard scramble on 3rd and 18 comes front of mind. Jordan Milata told me that he actually had the defensive line and pull his face mask. So he didn't get to see Jalen take off. But he looked downfield, saw Jalen and just said, with more colorful language than I'll use here. Thank God that Jalen Hertz was able to make that play.

So, you know, a lot of talk about the up and down nature of the offense and how Jalen really delivered for this offense in the moments that they needed. I found it very interesting that Jalen had a nice long pause at the podium today talking about if there are moments in games where he feels like it's time for him to make his mark. He took a really, again, a lengthy pause and eventually settled on. Yeah, there are moments. where it comes down to him. And he embraced it. He said he doesn't try to force it,

but it's something that he welcomes. And I'm excited to talk about this one with you guys in a couple of minutes here. I asked Jalen about the first touchdown to Dallas got it on four verts, two by two set, a real callback to last season. And I could tell from asking a couple other players that, you know, they knew the significance of the play when they were, that they, when they ran it. And I saw, you know, after the touchdown,

Jalen turns to the sideline, gives them a little shrug. So I asked Jalen about that. He gives a smile, tries to figure out what he wants to say, and he says, it's a good play. It's a good play. You guys can figure that out.

I think we know that there was some added meaning to that. That is so funny. It was awesome. It was a real moment. Jalen has a lot of quotes, but that was a real moment from Jalen. All right. So getting through the rest of the notes here,

Jalen mentioned it, Jordan Milada mentioned it, some other guys mentioned, that the commanders, obviously, they didn't know exactly what to expect from this group with a new defensive coordinator, and Jordan Milana said that they threw the kitchen sink at them and really sold out to stop the outside zone game,

which is interesting because, you know, this is obviously a new thing from the Eagles. It's something that we haven't seen them rep in games, but I think the commanders knew that this was going to be the foundation. Maybe they subscribed to all p.h.o.com. They saw my story where I wrote that Sean Mannion in the first day of install said that outside zone is going to be the foundation for everything that they do.

And the commander sold out to stop. it. And I thought it's very noteworthy that Seekwon Barkley's best run, the 42-yarder in the first half, came on an inside zone, you know, what they've been repping for years and years. So, you know, they had to adjust midway through the game. And, you know, they, Seekwon, this kind of segues into what we heard from Seekon, said that he's not going to dwell on the negative runs and the negative aspects of this game plan. He said last season, I found this very interesting. He said last season, he kind of got caught up in the comparison game from 2024 and wanting to reach those heights again. again. And he said this season, he said it from the start, he's not going to be playing that comparison game this year. You know, he acknowledged it in Philadelphia that we have a tendency, we the media, as what he was saying, have a tendency to overreact. And he said that that's not going to be the case this year. You know, he said last year, maybe they would have looked at this game and said, well, we only won by two points. He said that that's not going to be the energy of the approach that they have this season. And then I just heard BG talking about, you know,

defensive linemen, the regrets they have about missing sex. Boroa Jomo, as excited as you may have been about the two point conversion stop that he got. The loudest thing that he did in his press conference was a big groan talking about a miss sack opportunity. I think he realizes how important those are for him this season. So, yeah, Morrow definitely was excited about that play. But I think he's going to be thinking about that miss sack when he puts his head on the pillow tonight.

Josh Sweat gets injured. It was the Saints game from 2022. And you ended up having to play way more snaps than you were expecting to. Oh, yeah. So then, you know, I'm with you there. When you're there with the whole family on the field and you're like, I am tired. Ain't nobody coming to save me.

Ain't nobody coming to save me. And it was, man, it felt great to get those reps. But at the end of the day, man, it was. Your boy is tired. I was tired. Because sweaty, I played the Giants game the next game too. Yeah. And sweaty, sweaty was out.

Sweety was out for the one. Yep. But I had hoped. What that must be like. We were talking about Jalen Carter. It plays like all but four of the snaps in that weather. Crazy. Week one.

You're going to reserve yourself to to third down. Then you go go get it. BLG, what did you make of that? Feeling hurts. We got them back. I want to hear what you thought of the Jillen Hertz.

Jayland's funny. Like, right? He's not like, you know, like comedian, you know, get on the mic,

that kind of funny, right? But he, it is subtleties and is pointed, direct, and juxtapose against his normal series when he gets,

when he delivers you something like that. That's, that's really funny. Yeah. That's Jayla hurts. BG, you know him well, obviously. What kind of mindset do you think he had coming in here? And what did he want to prove?

He wanted to go out there and just, you know, we got an identity and show that. And I know that we couldn't get the running game started. But like he said, it's like in those key moments, he was able to step it up. And that's what he wanted to be able to do to be able to help the team. And so many people might not like how they run in the offense or all these different things that they stall out,

three and outs and stuff like that. But I know for Jaylen, he's trying to, he's trying his best to make sure that everybody's all on the same page. Everybody knows what's going on. I'm sure he's helping Mackay, if anything, is going on with him not knowing what to do. But I know that he just want the offense to have their own identity and then stick by it. E.J., what happened? And Mike, quick, knock you out? He didn't knock me out.

I mean, he's got so much star power that he probably just knocked out the internet for a couple of minutes there. But, you know, he gave you guys a shout out. He was happy to see you guys. Yep. That's very funny. I know we didn't get a chance to see it. You should have seen his face. It looked like he was about to come behind you when it froze up.

Like, ah, boy, but no, it was cool. EJ, give us a sense of the general, like, vibe of the locker room. Because we, listen, I think we can be a little bit too nitpicky about, you know, a week one in-division win when there's so many new faces and new things going on. Like, I mean, that's a great win. Yeah, I definitely don't think that there was, you know, some of that 20-25, like, you know, like, eerie. Like, we won the game, but we know there's a lot to work on. There was a lot of that, a lot of acknowledgement that this is, you know, this is the starting point and that there are things they need to improve on,

especially from the offense. But I do think that this was a group that felt good about what you just said, getting a division win in a season opener where you know that things aren't always going to look the way you want them to look. You know, I thought it was very interesting and telling today that, the two big plays, you know, the, the, well, I guess two of the three big plays. The Dantavian Wicks play is like the new Sean Mangan offense, but, you know, the fourverts to Dallas got it in the inside zone with Sequin Barclay. Those are the comfort calls that we heard Sean Mangan talk about during training camp. You mentioned, you know, finding things that could help the offense get into a rhythm

when things weren't going well. They did a better job accessing those in the first half, obviously. But, you know, those are things that equals have repped a hundred times over. You know, those are the comfort calls. You know, that's something that, you know, is a holdover from pass it or of this offense. And I think we saw some of the glimpses of what it can look like, you know,

the deep shot to Don Tavian Wicks being a good example, when the offense is looking the way that Sean Mangan envisions it to look. But I thought that Sean Mangan did a nice job today, getting to those comfort calls, getting the things that you know Jalen Hertz and this offense can rep. You know the offensive line can succeed with. So yeah, I thought the mood in the locker room was one to acknowledge that there's work to do,

but, you know, I didn't get like that most miserable. winning team you've ever been around vibes this this this uh this evening it seemed like a team that really was willing ready to enjoy that win i like that i think that's i think that's good to hear it's a really good point about the comfort calls even like the jeline scramble like really in terms of the mannion offense it's it's that wicks play and that's yeah week one but i think that's in a way encouraging d lg because you expect that stuff to take a little bit more time so for them to be able to lean on some old stuff makes sense and i feel like that play where the dallas godder touchdown

the second one where they take advantage of a defense not like set up and not fully ready. Yeah. I don't remember that happening last year. I don't remember like the offense kind of like taking advantage of the defense like that. So that's something that stood out to me. Dallas got her talked about that after the game. He clarified that because it's like a lateral shift, it's legal, even if it's right at the snap, it's totally legal.

He did acknowledge though that the referees might tell him in the future you can't do it that deliberately. Like you can't, you know, have that much, you know, go, goose gusto. when you're going from one side to the other. But again, he defended himself on that because, yeah, the commanders, all the commanders players are like irate about that. But honestly, from my vantage point,

it looked like he took a step forward, probably on the TV broadcast, you could tell it was a lateral step. Because on the replays, I could tell that he didn't actually take a step toward the line of scrimmage on that one. I think what they were mad at is that he did that little side motion at the same time that Milata was using his arm. And so there were two of them moving at the same time.

Yeah. Goddard acknowledged that like it's probably not one you can get away with every week. But, you know, it's within the rules of the game. Yeah. Very nice. Anything else from the locker room, E.J. What was Jay? What was Jalen's postgame fit?

Was it that gene thing? It was the gene thing. Was he asked about the mustache? No, Jeff McLean mentioned the Canadian tuxedo reference to Jalen. I don't think Jalen knows what a Canadian tuxedo is. He ain't listening to what's the name anyway. He doesn't hear of him. I got to go a bad for my guy, Jeff.

Yeah. What are he going to say? What are he trying to say? What's up on his mind right now? Other things, oh, this is a big one. I heard from Jordan Milata. Landon Dickerson wasn't in the locker room when we got there. And speaking of Jeff McLean, he asked, he asked Jordan Milata about if Landon

Dickerson is healthy and okay. Yeah. And Jordan Milata actually, he didn't, it was, I wouldn't. I want to clarify. He wasn't saying, like, I don't know in the sense of, like, who knows? He was saying I didn't get a chance to talk to him after the game. Landon was out of there very quickly, apparently. Like, Lannon got in and got out.

So obviously, he had a tough game. I would imagine he would be frustrated after a game like that. But, yeah, we didn't get a chance to hear from Landon. I know some fans will probably be curious if he talked after the game. We didn't get a chance to talk to him. Okay. Sometimes it's going to take to Wednesday. It's going to take when you get there on Wednesday,

and you talk to the media. I mean, he got to gather his thoughts. That's what I'm going to give. Yeah, I go back and forth because on the one hand, it's like, you know, do you owe it to talk after a bad game? Like, do you need to be accountable? But on the other hand, like, you got to get your head right. You don't want to say something you don't want to say. 100%.

I think that's reasonable. He don't want to fight nobody that asks the questions like Jeff McLean. Especially because he's hot. I know he's hot because, I mean, he's hard to himself, Lyndon. Yeah, the last time we heard from him in the locker room was after the 49ers game. And that was as despondent as I've seen, honestly, probably one of the most despondent players in a postgame locker room I've seen as as crazy as that might sound. Like it looked like a guy who was wondering if his career was over. So, you know, I hear you, VG.

I think it is probably the type of thing, especially they've won. And it's not like he had like the big play that costs on the game. I think sometimes when that happens, you want to be accountable after the. game. I think, you know, it makes sense he might want to, you know, cool off and talking a couple days. I think you're right. You don't want to be, you don't want to be the guy who's angry after a win. Oh, yeah, you don't want to be that. All right. E.J. Smith, great insight. Thank you so much. BLG, giving your final thoughts about the Eagles starting the season 1 and0. Excited to see how they build on this. You get the Titans coming up in week two. team that lost to Lindsay's Jets earlier today. Raising her hands in victory. It might be the only time this year.

It would be nice if you could take advantage of that team. I feel like this is a game to build on. Yeah, I agree with you. It's more of the offense getting that running game together. You know, that's the biggest takeaway from me is like getting Seekwine started just so that it opened up so much more. But it's a great start. defense went out there and flew around.

Special teams got to keep it up. And man, I just know that the Titans are on the list for the next. Here go. Yeah, to me, I think, you know, positive signs from the defense. I think we expect them to get even better than what we saw today,

and they were already very good today. And I think the offense, there's every reason to expect they're going to get better. And I got to tell you, I'm kind of smitten by what EJ told us about that Jalen post-game thing because this season, it's going to be about Jalen.

And it's probably going to be a lot of tough games where Jalen Hertz is a winner. And he continues to be this lightning rod. But guess what? You know, he was 14 of 25 for 203 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. None of those interceptions we saw this summer. And he made a couple huge plays with his legs. I am ready to ride the roller coaster with this season of Jalen proving that he can have success in this new offense, but also bring the special things that he can bring
