Hello everybody and welcome to the PHY Eagles podcast, a training camp debut edition. Live from the Xfinity Lounge and presented by Ashley, Bo Wolf, Rand Duffy, E.J. Smith. We got a lot to talk about. We have seen practice. We have talked to Howie Roseman and Nick Siriani. We've talked to Jalen Hertz and Lane Johnson, Jordan Davis, the new big money man, Jalen Carter, all kinds of information. coming your way. Loaded show. A lot to get to, Fran. How you doing? Doing better now. Exciting start to training camp. A lot to cover.

We've got a lot that we're going to be covering here in this show. So, yeah, I'm excited. E.J., big day for you. We'll get to that in a little bit, but how you doing? It was a big day for me because a long-time listeners in the show now. Training camp is like my favorite place to be. My favorite time of the year, I can't believe. Year 8. Eight years I've spent watching football practice as a grown man.

I don't take that for granted. I'm excited to talk about it. Earlier today. when Olivia Reiner, my dear friend, asked me, year 17 at Eagles training camp. Year 17. That's a privilege, man. Congratulations.

You're 16 for me, Eagles training camp, and 22 overall in football. See, he just had to get there. I had excited to sneak those extra five years. I was, like, learning, like, basic algebra in, like, seventh grade when you guys were covering. You weren't. I wasn't.

I didn't, well, learning, yeah. Learning. Yeah, I would hope that you were learning a little bit more than basic algebra in seventh grade but speak for yourself okay you know not all of us want to get to now training camp began as it typically does with a press conference with nick syriani and howie roseman this is the only time we hear from howie before roster cut down day and one of the only times we get to hear from him all season long during the regular season during training camp so interesting stuff obviously we wanted to hear what he had to say about jalen carter

in the state of the roster. There's also a bunch of front office turnover, stuff like that. Should we start with Jalen Carter, are you, Jay? Yeah, let's start with Jalen Carter. I feel like he was at least one of the people of the day. Obviously, had a big day coming off of signing that contract extension yesterday, and we heard from Jalen Carter, but I'll be honest, what we heard from Hallie Roseman really stood out to me.

He talked about the process toward getting to this contract. He said that Jalen Carter was waiting for the defensive tackle market to materialize and transition is the word that he used, you know, because of the potential for other people to sign deals. Obviously, Jeffrey Simmons signed a deal a couple of weeks before Jalen Carter was able to. And Callie Rosen also mentioned that training camp was a natural deadline for them, and that both sides wanted this to be resolved by the time that training camp came around, which is ultimately why they ended up doing this and talked about an anecdote that Zach Bonn had shared with Howley Roseman

and a few other people, including Jalen Carter in the Eagles building, about they're not paying you for what you've done in the past. They're paying you for what you can do in the future, for what you are going to become. That's a big theme around the Jalen Carter extension is that he has the upside to become a much more dominant player than he already is, which is honestly crazy to think about, given what we've seen from him so far. But that was a big point of emphasis from Howie Rosen, that that a player that he can become is really who they're paying right now. Lindsay, why don't we play a little clip of Howie Roseman talking about how the Jalen Carter deal came together?

When I think about the timeline with Jalen Carter, you know, we went into the offseason, looking to extend him, looking to extend, obviously, JD, and kind of keep the strength of our team, you know, that position group, not only with those two guys, I mean, Morrow, unbelievable player, unbelievable person for our team, B.Y took a lot of steps, and we got a young group behind that that we're really excited about, and we felt like that was one of the strengths of our team. We wanted that to be one of the strength of our team going forward. Defense tackle position in the league, in college football, it's a deficient position.

You know, they're hard to find guys like that. And so we feel like it was a priority. Where the market was when March opened was kind of in transition. You know, you had guys like Dex ready to sign, obviously Simmons. And so some of the reasons that it got to this point were just because we were trying to figure out the market. And from his perspective, he was trying to figure out the market. There hadn't been a big jump in the market. And so we like to do contracts in March and April, obviously, get that situated before we go into the draft, before we go into our summer. This is a unique situation. By the same

token, getting this done before camp was important for all of us. You know, good things happen when you get things off your plate and you're able to focus on football. think it is at least worth remembering that, you know, it does matter to Howie to get this stuff done before camp, which it tracks with everything we've ever heard from him about, you know, the way that he wants to handle the locker room and rewarding guys and sending the message to the locker room that the best players do get rewarded. But I think it's just, you know, I think to put a little pin in for next year. Absolutely. And today was like a, there was also a definite theme about players talking about like, you know, this is just how this organization has run. You know,

like this is the culture here. And Howley mentioned it too, that the culture is, you draft players, you develop players, and then those players get rewarded for that development. So, yeah, I mean, they were kind of all taking a whiff today, I would say. Sure, but it's also worth thinking about as you look down the tunnel of Quineonianne Mitchell, Cooper DeGine, potentially having to get paid. Howie Roseman says those guys aren't going anywhere. When you talk about it, you know, general managers get hired and they'll stand up

and they'll have these microphones, and they'll say, well, how do you want to build your team? And they say, we want to draft, we want to develop, we want to resign. And since Coach Suriani's here, that's all we've done. We've drafted players, we've resigned our players, and when you talk about culture, that's the first thing that comes to mind with culture. If I do well, I'm going to get a reward.

I don't have to go somewhere else to do that. And so that's really a huge part of what we're trying to build. So we're proud about that. And that's going to be our first priority, as opposed to getting to march and trying to go outside the building. The way that these drafts go about, it also allows you to structure your contracts in a way that you can continue to keep guys.

Now you're gonna have to make sacrifices. You saw it in the off season. You know, we let players go that we care about, that we think are good players, that we think are really good people that fit. But we had to move on because, you know, we have some game changing players and people that are part of this organization

and we don't intend to lose. So I would say to our fans, if you're wearing a jersey with some of those guys with those names on the back, we fully intend for those guys to be here on the long time. So you think that bad news for like a Morojojojo jersey owner or what? I mean, yes, I think that the jersey analogy only stretches so far. But I actually like this line from Hallie Rosen. Like the players that make the Eagles feel like the Eagles, the real difference makes. the needle movers, they are not going anywhere.

The Eagles aren't in the business of letting those blue chip talents leave. I know that that's kind of harsh on Moro Gomo, but I do think when you're looking at like the Quinion Mitchell's and the Cooper de Jeans of the world, you don't have to worry about those guys being affected by a deal like this. They make the plans to make sure that they can pay those guys. I do think, you know, anyone from yesterday after the Jalen Carter extension that was like, oh, like, I don't know if they're going to be able to keep Cooper de Gene and Quinaw Mitchell.

To me, even before that, hearing this line from Howie Roseman, I think you put that to bed. You don't resign read Blanketship. You don't resign Mora Ojimo. You don't resign Nicobi Dean. You make those calls. You know, Tyler Steen, like I don't know if you're going to deal done with Tyler Steen this spring.

But the blue chip guys, especially at the premium spots, you're not letting them out the door. Yeah. No. And how I would never do that. No. Before we get to what is like making Fran want to jump out of his clothes, he's so excited. The other little bits of news from this press conference. First of all, we got to say, Jonathan Granon,

starting the train camp on PUP, a peck strain that he suffered lifting weights before camp started. Howe Roseman said they expect him to be ready. He's going to be ready to play ball, but they didn't give a timeline. Not ideal. No.

Yeah, I mean, usually that opening injury to camp, like they always will say, it doesn't jeopardize their regular season, but it is at the very least, like he's going to miss time, and we will see if it affects him when he comes back. So it's never ideal. Everybody else on the active roster,

was available. But yeah, he was the one who opened the opening train camp on pop. You know who's going to hate it. Who's that? Big Fangio. Missing practice. I mean, this practice time is important. I mean, they're only out there for 77 minutes.

You know, we don't have enough time as it is. That's what Vick's probably saying right now. What did Lane call it the wussification? He used a different term that I don't think we should use on the show. Oh, okay. Little, it wasn't vulgar. Cisification is what he said, yes. A little misogynistic, you know.

But we'll let him slack. All right. What other takeaways from Howie before? I mean, those are the big ones. I would say in general here, I'm going to use my notepad here. You're going to be seeing a lot of this. We should know. He was asked about, we haven't talked to Howie, about the front office changes that had been made since we last spoke to him. So that's the departure of Alec Halliby, departure of Jeff Scott, the departure of Brian Johnston from the front office, the promotion of Adam Berry to assistant GM.

You know, Howie said when he came to the office on Monday, it was very obvious to him because those three guys who left were like three of the four offices that are closest to his. Obviously, he's worked with Alec in particular for a very long time. And he said he relayed an anecdote of being at dinner with his wife. And it's like it's on him because with those guys they had worked together so long, he could communicate what he wanted to communicate in, you know, four words or whatever. And that's going to take a little bit of work that makes sense. And he said also Adam Barry, like, we think he's ready for the job, but you've got to do the job before, you know,

how to do the job. Yeah, yeah, that's enough to me. He was saying that when he took over his GM, he got his butt kicked, is what he would say. Yeah, so the other thing that if we're talking press conferences, that I think people find interesting is that Jordan Davis and Jordan Davis's family, along with Jalen Carter's family, both of his parents, were in attendance for Jalen Carter's, like, big, you know,

contract extension press conference after practice. Yeah, I thought was nice. We'll get to that in a little bit, but it was nice to see the families out there. Yeah. We've got depth chart notes for you. We've got our players of the day. We've got all kinds of notes on what happened at practice. But we do have to start, Fran, with what has you so excited?

And we, EJ. and I got to see it a little bit in the spring. Yep. And, you know, our takeaway was, wow, like this offense, it is going to look different. You got to see it in full today. What did you think? Yeah, it's a different offense. Yeah, it's a different offense. I mean, just basically like setting the tone.

And we talked about this. I think I talked about it with Cuzz. yesterday where the whole process of installing an offense every single season whether you have a new office coordinator or not you're starting with the building blocks you're starting with you call it like day one install all the early stuff that's that's that would you build off of the things that you're putting in right now and what you're seeing a lot of right now it's a lot of under center it's a lot of motion it's a lot of multiple tight end set so it's it is going to have a different look a different feel a different vibe very for and we're going to get into like the nitty

gritty of stuff later and it's like specific examples of things that I saw that I think are a harbinger for like future success like harbinger positive connotation right they can be not just negative uh yeah like a good sign of things moving forward um but literally like very first play a team they come in a condensed that 12 personnel and it's a stretch zone play a stretch toss play it's a Sequin barclay uh and it's like yep this is a this is a different feel a different vibe they are under center more than they are not yes i was going to say in my notes i don't even note when they're under center anymore. I note when they're in the shotgun because it is the exception, not the rule right now. And, you know, listening to Lane Johnson after practice and it mirrors, it's a lot of, honestly,

like, everything that I saw matches what you guys saw in the spring. Listening to Lane today, it's a lot of what he said over the course of the off season as well. But he talked about how, yeah, this kind of like takes a lot of the load off the offensive line. It takes a lot of the load off the quarterback. It takes a lot of the load off of these guys where the scheme can take care of a lot of issues. It keeps defenses guessing. It keeps them honest. You're not as predictable. Now, it's up to you as an offensive line. He talked about, you know, different things that they've got to do with, like, mastering their craft and the details and, you know, making sure that we are always, you know, making things look exactly the same with how we line up in our stance and how we get off the ball

to sell run past. And so there's a lot of the details that those guys have to do. But, man, it was music is my ears. If you want to see a new look offense, you're going to get it. Well, can you explain why it is that it makes things, it makes life easier for? the offensive line and the quarterback. Yeah. Honestly, it's like a, you know, if you're a baseball fan and you're going up against a pitcher and you read scouting reports on pitchers and it's like, all right, well, you're reading like arm slots and things like that where if a guy's thrown a curve ball and it's, you know,

up here right above his head. And if it's a fastball or if it's a change up, then it's a little bit more three-quarters delivery or vice versa. That little advantage gives you, you know, a millisecond more time to prepare for it. Same idea where if you see, hey, you know what, when a guy lines up in this stand, well, it's much more likely to be a pass as opposed to a run. Or when it's play action, he does this as opposed to that. So they want to make sure that everything you do, if you're Lane Johnson,

no matter what you're doing. Like, hey, when we line up this way, we're trying to keep the opponent guessing whether it's run past. And not to get into like the whole like, you know, like the Eli Stowers conversation. But like it's the same thing with like personnel groupings, right? Like where you want to be able to line up in the same personnel grouping and get as close to 50-50 run pass possibility as you can.

Like that's the goal is to keep defense as honest in that way and it gets extremely granular like into like, you know, if a guy's got his hand in the dirt or not versus, you know, obviously the big picture conversations

we continue to have. I pulled a quote from Lane Johnson if you want to hear from him. Yeah, that'd be great. So he said, what I like about this is everything looks very complex to the defense.

To the offense, it's pretty simplified. So obviously you have to pick up on communication and Caden stuff, but that's very O-line-friendly compared. Maybe some of the past years I've been involved in.

When we're under center, it's so hard for the defense to really tell if it's a run or play action. So getting off the ball now, a lot more hesitation and reading from them. So I think this offense does a good job of setting us up for success. I'm sitting there listening to it. Like music. This is it. This is what gets you excited about what this offense could look like.

Now, again, I'm not expecting them to hit the ground running. It's not going to be a fully formed, you know, offensive, cohesive unit right away. but the way that I would explain it is this. You guys remember the 20-24 season, okay? The Eagles, they get through the month of September, and they're getting ready to play this team in week four. They were playing New Orleans Saints, who had started 3-0, and I remember watching that offense,

and I'm like, Clay Kubiak is cooking. Like, this offense looks good, like the bones of it looked good. Like, I'm really excited about what this unit could look like, and the Eagles go down and they destroy that team, right? And then they get injured. They put Zach Bonn in the box. Yeah, so they went down and they were outside.

But I remember watching that and thinking like, like Kupiak's cooking with gas. Like this guy, like I really like the way that this thing is all meshing together. You know, and then that team goes in the tank and then he gets, he becomes a coaching free agent. He ends up in Seattle and we know the rest. They go on the win the Super Bowl and the Seahawks. I'm not saying that Sean Mann is going to do that this year, right?

But I think we're going to have a pretty good idea early on. Like all those conversations we had last year in September and October of like, like, oh, like, I don't know what the, What is this team? What is the identity? It feels like we're going to know what the identity is of this team. And to me, that excites me. I like the idea of like, this is who we are,

offense or defense, opponent be damned. Like enough of the like, oh, we're going to change this up. Yeah, you're always going to fine tune your game plan. But to have an idea and say, this is our DNA. Like, this is who we are, what we want to be. I like that. And I think you're going to get that feeling from this office. You're getting me fired up over here. he was actually like the first play yeah I'm writing down notes hold on let me tell this story because I was doing running notes with timestamps you know for all p-h-o-i dot com and at 1034 I just wrote I gotta become a die hard to read it

yeah I wrote at 1034 Fran Giddy he was just like he went to overdrive he was so happy about like even when the outside the stretch the stretch toss run that they opened a team with like literally the second they break the huddle Fran is like oh yeah

let's go. You know what it was? It's like, too. It's the feeling of football being back then. So I'm like, all right. But it's under center. It's 12 personnel. 10 months on the field.

It's going to be great for later in the show. I'm excited. All right. We're all excited. We got a lot to talk about. We're going to take a quick break. On the other side, we're going to tell you our players of the day. We've got three different players of the day.

Training Camp has begun. Nice to see the chat going crazy. People are excited about camp. Good to have everybody back involved as we begin.

the 2006 eagle season. Time for our practice players of the day. We're going to track this over the course of camp guys. We're each going to pick one for every day we're a practice. We're going to start with our Eagles insider. E.J. Smith lead us off. The very first practice player of the day, who you got? I had a mind for mischief today.

So my player of the day, I took some liberties, and I made Sean Mannion, the coach of the day today. Because listen, what Fran just alluded to, today, you know, we got further confirmation that this offense is going to look significantly different. I remember in the spring I heard from someone who said it couldn't really be much more different. And I think that really, you know, you saw that today in the formations they use, some of the creativity, the pre-snap motion. There was a lot of things to feel really good about. And I actually think the biggest difference being there in the spring and being there today was like there were good moments. You know, there were some good completions over the middle of the field.

You know, there were some, I know, we're talking, talking France language here. You know, there were some creative run plays. There was a mixture of run plays that we'll get into that was encouraging as well. So, yeah, I honestly think, like, if you're an Eagles fan and you want to know the bottom line from what happened with practice today, Sean Manion is central to it, which is the fact that the offense looks significantly different. And I think that they made some progress from the spring till now, which is what you would have expected and what you want to hear.

What do you think? I mean, I think that it's a little. crazy that you've taken it's the first day at training camp we went the first day we're doing this exercise standing on non-player i just i just told you if you're if you want to know what happened to practice sean manion is the main character of the day i feel good about it all right got mine you go next uh are you offense or defense i'm offense all right because i'm defense i'll let you go that way we stay on the side of the ball well sean manion is nice yeah Sean Manning is a supporting character.

Oh. My practice player of the day is the main character of the football team. Yeah. Jalen Hertz is my training camp player of the day. And I will tell you what. Beyond looking fresh in that mustache, he's got the great anecdote of his wife slips a $5 bill in his backpack. That's some kind of inside joke between them.

And he takes out the $5 bill and slaps it on Jalen Carter's chest. I got five on top of that. You know, he is, all lines are on Jalen Hertz as he undergoes the most dramatic offensive transition of his career in a career that has been characterized by nonstop offensive transitions. In a post-A.J. Brown world, how is he going to handle all of this? And I thought he looked, not perfect,

but much more comfortable today than we saw him in the spring. There were three throws in particular that stood out to me. Seven on seven. No, 7 on 7 is not the most, it's not the craziest thing in the world. But a seam ball down the middle of the field, Darius Cooper over Cooper de Jean. Your boy. Nice, really nice diving catch by Darius Cooper. But, you know, he's beating Cooper de Jean.

He's layering that ball deep down the middle of the field, drop it into a bucket. Okay, it's 7 on 7. That's fine. There was a nice little tight window throw to Dantavian Wicks with Rikwollen in coverage. Not like the most explosive play. It was probably like a 12-yard completion of first. down throw, but exactly where it needed to go. And then the best throw he made all day was that deep dig route to Devonte Smith,

beating Quinyon Mitchell, probably, you know, 15, 20 yards down field, dotted it right where his hands are. And again, this is not perfect. There was a play early where I think it was also to Darius Cooper. It's under center play action. He's rolling left and he makes the right read right away. And he throws it to Darius Cooper and the ball dies a little bit. Yeah, he was upset with himself on this one.

He was upset with himself. And to me that was like, okay, this is day one. He made the right read. He made the right throw. He didn't quite get his legs under him in the way that he needs to do it in this new type of fundamentals that he hasn't wrapped a ton throughout his entire life. I'm sure if he gets that same read in a week, that ball is going to be exactly where it needs to be and Darius Cooper is going to be off to the races.

There are a lot of things that need to improve throwing to some of the other wide receivers. so the ball is a little bit behind Mackay Lemon on a throw. But you know what? He hasn't worked with him the same that has worked with Devante Smith. He's dotting Devante Smith. I'm not worried about that stuff.

I felt like it was a very nice beginning of what is the most important year in Jalen Hurts' career. No notes. I agree with that. I think that when you look at the way that Jalen operated today, yeah, like it wasn't all perfect.

I've got some play-by-play stuff as well in here and we'll hit on that in the next segment. but I was pretty happy with what I saw from him today. I thought he had a good day. Yeah, I thought the deep dig to Devante toward the end of practice was especially encouraging given what we know about Sean Mannion's system and how he has to listen to his feet. He has to trust his feet.

And that's the type of throw, the timing and anticipation throw, that you want to see more of from Jalen Hertz, especially in the system he's going to have to do it. I think the fact that he did it day one is really encouraging. And the other thing I wanted to note is he had that one pass to the Don Tavian Wix and I think you could probably argue whether or not it was a drop or if the throw was behind him, maybe a little bit of both. But I noticed that they walked down the sideline together a few plays after that to talk

through that play, which goes to your point. Like with these new receivers, I think he is going to have some time to build chemistry. And I think honestly, like, I'm going to keep harping on this, you know, from last year until now, I do think we were seeing a more open Jalen Hertz. I think we're seeing a more communicative Jalen Hertz. I'm not saying that three years ago he wouldn't be walking down the same. sideline with Don Tavia and Wicks, but I think he's doing more of that stuff nowadays. I think he's realized how important that can be.

He talked in his press conference about the importance of the getting all the guys together, the multiple times that they did. It's a larger group than they have had in the past where as in the past, it's been like just a couple of young guys or something like that. And you can also, you know, he mentioned the thing about this is the first time in his career where he's throwing to a guy who watched him when he was in high school. Like Kyle Lemon watched Jalen Hertz as a pro when he was in high school. and you can just, to your point, E.J., I think you can see a little bit of that evolution

in him embracing that role and trying to bring these guys along. Yeah, it goes along with something. Like, did you, do you remember Jalen Carter talking about Jalen Hertz? Like, he said something about, like, almost like he's got this like other worldly presence to him. You know, it's like he is one of the guys. He's like a big brother, but he's also kind of like this, like, this, like, I don't want to say a mythical figure, but this public figure in every interaction you have with him.

And I think that Jalen seems to be embracing, like, his role as, like, the messenger. You know, like, what he has, he has his opening address for his press conference today. He mentions, you know, discipline and unity are the themes for this season. And 100% alignment, zero percent entitlement. I think he's realizing that, like, he does have that air about him in the locker room, and he can use that to affect winning. All right. Let's move to our final practice player of the day.

Who you got, Fran? Yeah, this is a player that, you know, E.J. referenced earlier that, you know, one of the names of the day, and I would say one of the names of the last 26 hours. Jalen Carter. A good one. I thought that he really made his presence felt. Three plays in particular. First, first opening team period, he gets a run stop against Tang Bigsby. It was in the fourth or fifth play, wraps him up at the line of scrimmage on an inside run. Second team period, very first play, gets a TFL. He's in the back field and wraps up the running back corrals him. First play of the third team period. So first three team periods, he's out there

going up against the offensive line and very early on makes his presence felt. There's the first play of the third team period. It's an outside run away. So Sequin's running to the left. I think it was Jordan Davis kind of held up the point of attack. But you see Jalen kind of – Jalen Carter kind of closed from the backside, and he would have been credited with the TFL on that play. So I thought that Jalen Carter, the day after signing the big money extension,

this is what you wanted to see if you were an Eagles fan and you were observing practices. Number 98 showing up in a big way. It wasn't quite like wrecking practice level necessarily. Yes. But I thought it was very encouraging. And I'm glad that you did this because we deserve to talk about it. Like the moment of him, the press conference was really nice as well. You just don't see like that kind of smile on Jalen Carter's face with us very often.

It was very sweet. His mom was there. He had some family there. You know, I thought that the way that Jordan Davis said something else about this in his press conference was a good. reminder. You know, he's talking about, I don't like to talk about guys like X's and O's because these are real human beings. Like, yeah, Jalen Carter is going to get paid a lot of money and he's going to be expected to be awesome. But I think we can also take a day to appreciate what this means for him and his family and everything that he has worked hard for. I think it's very nice.

Yeah, just personally, and I don't want to make this about myself, but I'm going to, I guess. I wrote a story about Jalen Carter when the Eagles drafted him. I went down to Apocca, Florida, you know, talk to his family, talk to his coaches, and seeing his parents there was kind of like the thing that, like, jogged my memory on all those things. And kind of like the progress that he's made. And yeah, the human side of like what this means for him and his family. He was really happy. Yeah, absolutely.

And I think like his family being there meant a lot to him as well because, you know, I know how much his parents mean to him. So, yeah, it was just a cool moment. It was cool even after the press conference. Him and Jordan Davis are like hanging out on the field and their moms are, hugging on the field. Like it is a very human thing. Again, like we can sometimes get very analytical about it.

What was your most interesting depth chart note? Oh, okay. I was not surprised if you had listened to yesterday's show. You would have known I suspected this. But Johnny Munt, working with the first team a good amount as the second tight end and 12 personnel, which, again, not a surprise, but no words around the line. Number one takeaway? Well, I got to stay on brand.

Get out of town. I got to stay on break. People presented by True Mark. Financial Credit Union. I got to stay on brand. This is about the tight end. That is not the most notable thing. Get out of town.

All right. All right. I listen, I'm all about the tight ends, man. Tell me what's going on. 12 and 13 personnel. Some tight ins in the backfield today. Had some fun. Go ahead.

I did note that there was a decent amount of 12 personnel. They started in 12 on a handful of team periods. And in 7. seven. I thought it was notable. Yes, Johnny Mon did get a lot of reps with that first team. So you did find that notable.

That's interesting. I've got it in there. I've got it going. Yeah. And then Calcutara actually got more reps with the ones than I would have expected and even got some 11 personnel like reps with the ones. Now, they did rotate. It felt like at every position. Yeah.

I think today is a keep in mind, there was a lot of rotation all over the place. And I think that that was probably intentional from a let's get these guys' legs underneath them, you know, avoid soft tissue injury. kinds of things, especially guys on the outside. Yeah, but Eli Stowers did not get any reps at all with the ones that I saw anyway. And I don't think it was- It brings you joy for- Well, I don't think it was a rookie thing, though, because Mackay Lemon was with the ones basically the entire day. I don't know.

He's a first-round pick. I feel like that is a rookie thing. I don't know. Like, to me, it's like- Well, I don't think it's a rookie thing. I think it's an indication of this is how the rotation would play out if it was week one. If they were playing a game right now, I don't think he'd be acting. Sure, if they're playing a game right now, I'd say let's check in in a week, though.

Sure, yeah. Yeah, yeah. You've got to react to what we saw the day. Okay. Yeah, it's fair. No, I think it's noteworthy that he wasn't with the ones, but I think it very well could be a rookie thing. I think Lemons is just different. He's going to be the number two receiver.

Well, they hope he will be. I don't know. I just somebody do turkeys on that yesterday. They didn't want to go that far. I think that the more notable thing about the wide receiver stuff was, so essentially if it's 11. It's pretty much Devante, Wicks, and lemons on the inside. Yep.

What's interesting, like Hollywood Brown is a little bit buried. Not quite buried. Yeah. But there's a clear top three. I think so. Those guys rotate in and they're all working with Jalen, Darius Cooper, get some reps with the ones. Actually, Johnny Wilson, who was very involved in the spring, was not involved at all today.

Although Andy Dalton completed a nice past day. I think it's, and you can, this is what the money tells you, but it's wicks and hierarchy there yeah for sure Elijah Moore was not really involved at all with that so yeah I think there's there's definitely a hierarchy there I did notice too when they went 12 personnel I didn't see devante out there at all in 12 it was a it was a lot of wicks and lemon or wicks and occasionally Hollywood in there um with the 12 personnel sets now again I wasn't charting every single snap but that was one thing I noticed from those personal now you know I can't wait to tell you about the backup offensive line.

Oh, is that going to be your dev time? Bated breath. The defense is a little bit more interesting, but let's stick on the offense while we're here. You know, you've got your starting five. Second team offense. Fred Johnson, left tackle. Michael Jordan.

Boy. Left guard. And by the way. This was awesome. Go ahead, you, Jay. Jalen Hertz was asked about LeBron James. He goes, he's like, oh, it's great for the city.

It's great for sports culture. He's one of the greatest players in NBA history. And the second he said one of, I couldn't help it. I just looked at, I felt like a class cloud, like trying not to laugh at Jalen's press conference. Very key distinction. One of the best players in NBA history. We all know. Jalen thinks Michael Jordan's the go.

Will Jalen give it even a half smile if I ask him what's it like to play with Michael Jordan. He might. If he gets it the right time, I think he might. He might give you a half smile. It's risky. Depends on the day. Yeah. Depends on the day.

It does. So Fred Johnson left tackle, Michael Jordan left guard. Interesting because sometimes those veterans, now, again, this is different because I'm comparing it to how Stout used to do it. Who knows how Chris Cooper does it? But those veterans would sometimes have to, worked their way up from the threes. Michael Jordan being the second team left guard is interesting to me.

Jake Majors, second team center, had a tough day, I thought. Kendall, not Kendall, Drew Kendall, right guard, and then Marka Bell at right tackle. I am interested that Marka Bell is at right tackle instead of left tackle.

Because he was at left and he was doing a little bit of both. He was right. He was at right with the ones because Lane was out. Right, right, right. And obviously he's played left more, more in his career. Yep. Yeah.

Okay. And then with the threes, Cameron Williams, right tackle, Michael Morris right guard, Willie Lampian Center. Yep. Miles Hinton left guard and John Ojuquo left tackle. And that left, there were two guys who had to like rotate in only with the developmental period at the end, Colin Pierce and...

Mom. You got it. Gaden Roberts. Oh, okay. There you go. All right. You're not getting this anywhere else. I mean, you might.

The nitty gritty. I have to apologize. When you asked me for the depth chart notes, you were probably asking about the backup quarterback situation. But my mind goes straight to tight ends. You got to know your personnel. Well, let's talk about that. What was the deal?

Nick talked about this. Yeah. So Nick Siriani said before practice that the plan is to continue to rotate Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee with the second team offense. And what was noteworthy today is that in the spring, those guys alternated days. it would be Tanner McKee one day, Andy Dalton the next day. The days we were there, it seemed heavily skewed toward Andy Dalton,

but I think that's just the nature of the practice schedule. Today, I think it's fair to call that rotation sporadic throughout practice. Like, I don't know if you guys picked up on a rhyme or reason for when those guys were going in and out, but we saw a lot of Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee working in with the two's basically every other series. Again, it kind of seemed like there was no rhythm to it. So I know a lot of people will be very confused as to why the Eagles are. are still entertaining, like Andy Dalton taking over the second quarterback spot from Tanner McKee. You know, Nick said this isn't really a reflection of how they feel about Tanner.

It's more about the experience that Andy Dalton has. But honestly, like, that's his explanation. That's not necessarily something that I am going to say, like, I put a lot of stock into. I'm as surprised as most people would be. Okay. Defense. Everybody wants to know what's going on. It's safety, obviously, right?

And this was, I want to see how this continues. Because this is something that was on our radar as something that would be a bad sign. Marcus Epps next to Drew McCuba. But we also got periods where it was Marcus Epps next to Michael Carter. Yes. And Drew McCuba was off the field. Yep. I would hope that this is just worried about guys' legs, not overworking anybody.

If we're going to really see like a three-man rotation, like Drew McCuba has to earn his starting spot. I don't love that. Yeah. You don't want the possibility that the starting lineup on week one is Michael Carter and Marketer. I don't want them, yeah. Thinking of Makuba.

Right, that's what I mean. As if that could be a possibility. Yes, exactly right. You don't want that to be a possible, right? Yep. Yeah. It's not ideal. It makes the position group a lot less solid.

Like part of our accounting of that position group going into camp was expecting that they viewed Makuba as a starter and maybe a plus level starter if he hits the ceiling. Yeah. And there were times where, Quinnian Mitchell came off the field today and Jonathan Jones was working with the first team as an outside

corner. So I'm hoping that the Makuba angle there is like they're treating Q. So this is just, this is one to follow. Yeah, he's coming off a major injury. So maybe it is trying to slow play him back there. But I think Vic also just does weird things. Yeah. Sometimes with the rotations and the personnel, like if you just take a snapshot of one play in the middle of practice, you might not get the best picture of what the defense actually should look like. As expected, Riddhijin in base is a starting safety. Jahad Campbell took almost all the reps with the first team. We're number 11 now too. We're number 11 now, that's right.

There were a couple ones where he was next to Trotter, so they were spelling Zach Bond. So this is, I think the starting defensive rotation stuff is one that we just got to sort of keep an eye on over the next week or so. Again, like most notably though, like in the back seven, because it felt like in the defensive line, the first team reps, it was all Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Morrow, Jumo, Nolan Smith, and Jaylex Sun.

Like, and I didn't really see anybody else working in with that first. unit that's right all right so for now those are the right people or the Eagles at practice thank you to remark credit union all right any of the depth chart stuff I have a special teams that's gonna go pen a good shit I mean not Coppenna go shikin maximus Pooley got some reps with the twos safety I thought that I didn't notice this yeah you got reps with the twos of safety yes okay well let me follow this up so they did one short special teams period was the punt in punt return units So I always look at two things is, all right, like, who are the returners and who are, when the punt team is out there, who are the personal protectors?

That's the, you know, the, if you think of like the, you have the line, okay? And then you've got the gunners on the outside. The player that is behind the long snapper before the punter, like a few yards in the backfield. That's the personal protector. There were three guys that were in that role. Will Shipley has held that role for a couple of years. just like, since he's been on the team, he was out there. Cole Woznevsky was out there as the second.

Third was Maximus Pully. Interesting. I think that's pretty impressive for an undrafted free agent to be one of only three guys in that role. Okay. How will you feel if it's Maximus Pully taken over for the Gush as the cult hero on the show? They are very similar. I have no problem with that.

They are very similar archetypes, Pully and Gush. Yes. Goch better athlete. Right. Fully less heralded. Probably fair. Yes, correct. Yeah.

The returners, you had three punt returners out there. Yeah. You had Britton Covey. You also had Elijah Moore. The other big one was Mackay Lemon. Lemon was the other part, it was the third punt returner. And what I think it was notable is that with a lot of times,

you'll see the return guys go out, and there's like five or six returners. And it's like, all right, they're just, anybody wants it. In fact, there were only three in both of these roles. I thought it was, all right, you can kind of narrow the focus here. early on in camp.

All right. We got a lot more still to get to. I have so much to go on the offense. I've got a lot of play-by-play on the offense. A lot more to go. Yes. I'm going to remind you before we go to break, if you're just coming back to Eagles world,

Yeah, I know. Jordan Davis, love in the cut. I had no idea you clip that. Thank you, Lindsay, but yes. It was kind of him to say. You know, Jordan Davis has become, I mean, he won the Media Appreciation Award last year, the nice guy.

And yeah, he gave me some support on my journey here, my summer cut. Good for you. Yeah, I appreciated that. You won the award last year, I would say that puts him in the driver's seat for this year. You can't win it two years in a row. He's going to have to mentor somebody.

Let's not tell him. I mean, he's gunning for 2027. He's going to be here. He signed that extension. I mean, maybe he just liked my haircut. You know, maybe it wasn't, maybe there was no nefarious intent there. But yeah, I appreciated that.

Very kind of him to say that. All right. You get a lot to get to on the offense. Take us through it. Yeah, you know, it was just like, I'm going to hold everybody on the hook for who made the team. Right. So, look, there were a lot of reasons to be excited.

We know, like, the things that we've been looking for offensively and the things we've talked about with what could possibly be coming here with Sean Mannion. We talked about the 12 personnel, talked about the more under-center, under-center play action. The very first period, you get a post-cross route, Hertz drops back. He looks at Dontavian Wicks on a deep over-rout off of that deep under-center play action. Queenia Mitchell breaks it up, but it was like, all right, like, yeah, this is something we haven't really seen from this offense.

did think on the play, Bo, when Quinyan, Quinyan broke it up, and I did think Bo is somewhere, if he's watching this, thinking if Quinyan was really elite, he would have caught that. It was a Santa. That's right. Later in the day,

he hit Dontavian Wicks on a deep sit route, and he layered the ball right over the fingertips of Zach Bonn, and Elaine Johnson talked about play action, and, you know, again, like that body language of getting those linebackers to step up a little bit. That creates more room over the middle of the field. Really good example of example of exactly that on that play.

There was a play. Mackay Lemon in motion comes across the formation. He runs into the flat. It was like an out route. It wasn't like a flat route. He gets upfield, works, I want to say, like seven, eight yards, and it works to the sideline. Danez had pointed out how in the Green Bay offense, Green Bay, they ran a ton of

of a lot of hitches and a lot of outroutes. The difference is when you play that condensed, when everything is really tight to the formation and a lot of the multiple tight end seven. A lot of those guys tight to the formation, there is more space out to the number. So if you're using the purposeful motion to out leverage the defense and get that guy running full speed

like you saw on that play with Lemon, I thought that was a really good example of that. What did you think of the motion amount that we saw today? A lot of motion. And different kinds of motion too. We saw Lemon coming across the formation. There were some where he stops and goes back.

There's a lot of where he's in motion at the snap. So yeah, there was. And again, like we don't have like replays and film. I don't have my clicker, but it's like, you know, just trying to clock all the different ways these guys were used, I thought was notable. Seven on seven period, there was a two-play sequence with Hertz kind of working the middle of the field that I thought was important. There's one play. It ended up being a checkdown to Tank Bigsby, okay? And it was like, he kind of works across the field. He started to his right. He comes back and I kind of notice

they were running what I call a rap concept, where it's a two-man route concept. You've got like a little hitch route, and then behind it, an in-cut. So if there's a middle-of-the-field defender, our linebacker, you're hoping that, all right, he stays with that, that hitch route, and then the dig route or the in-cut works behind it. It was got it running the in-cut, and he turned it down. Now, I don't know if there was another defender there again, because I'm just kind of watching it live, but he turns that down, works across the field and gets the ball of Bigsby. Did a nice job, got in getting through progressions.

Did that fine. Very next play is when he hit Cooper down the seam. So it's like, all right, like, he turned down the middle of the field throw that may or may not have been there. Then he comes back, and it's a different kind of middle of the field throw. kind of get this sense. Okay. You know,

he makes that great throw to Cooper down the scene. Later in the day, they come back to a rap concept and he hits Goddard. Oh, my name is Jeline and I'm here to play. I thought you were going to go full Greg Olson.

It's a different kind of rap. But to me, he hits Goddard on that rap concept later in the day where again, like he hits that in cut over the middle of the field. You reference the Devante Smith play later in the day as well on that deep dig route.

We've talked about that. So you kind of see Jalen working those middle of the, working the middle of the field. But here's what I really liked about it too, was that going back to that Goddard one, the second rap concept. You talked earlier about Jalen saying that they want him to trust his feet. On those plays, that was not the primary read, the rap concept.

The rap concept was the backside of the read. So he starts on one side and comes back the other way in concept. It's not scramble drill and he's getting his eyes back. The concepts were married together, the fact where the timing worked, right? So it's not like Jaylin. Oh, like, where am I going to go? Where are I going to go?

Oh, I got to get to the backside. It's first read's not there. Second read's not there. Where are my eyes now? Okay, I got to play off. It's a two-man route concept. And I'm making one read. And if that's not there,

then I go to the running back on the backside. We saw him go through that progression multiple times. And one time he hit the end cut, another time he went to the checkdown. I thought that was really good to see. Yeah, there were a few of those checkdown swings to Sequin, which is like maybe a little bit more than you would want to see it. But it's not all bad.

but not all bad. It's not all bad. So, again, like, reasons to be excited. To me, like, even just seeing the, like, the go through the progressions, but that the, the different concepts married together, like worked well together. Yeah, this is what you want. There's going to be the Eagles fans listening to you spell that out about, like, Jalen going through his progression, who will say, like, wait, I thought I read

in an article somewhere this summer that he can't read, he can't go through progressions. So I think that it'll be validating for some people out there. I was talking with somebody again about this after practice, and it's, you know, comparing what he's been asked to do in previous iterations of the offense to what this year looks like is so different. There's going to be a lot that's taken off his plate post-snap when you're talking like pure progression reads

and things of that nature that just makes it where you don't have to read the defense. You don't have to have an understanding of like where the disguise is coming from and what throws are taken away. It's literally like one, two, three, four, ball. You just kind of work your way through it. There is a world in which, you know, he proves to be a great fit for this offense,

has an awesome year, looks like a top five quarterback again, and it becomes just a referendum and an indictment on the coaches that he's had in the past. Yeah. And it also, like, recontextualizes Rock Purdy or whoever else. It's like, oh, well, like, you got this guy in the right offense,

and all of a sudden he's, you know, ascending. Yeah. It's, um, yeah, I'm up. optimistic. I'm looking forward to continue to watch it. I thought you did a good job asking Jalen about the challenge of, again, this offense does seem like it is asking him to change the most relative to any year in the past. And he kind of used it as an opportunity to do some myth making, in my opinion. He was like, well, a challenge is a challenge.

It's about how you respond to it. He couldn't just acknowledge that this year was probably more challenging just in terms of an adjustment to what he's done in the past. But I think we all see it. I was curious, is that exciting? Is that invigorating time to like? to like, you know, go to work every day and work on something that is much different

than he's done before. When do we hear from Manning again? Is that tomorrow? I think Saturday. Yeah, Saturday. We hear from Vic tomorrow. Yeah, okay. It's going to be good to hear from him.

We've only heard from him once. One time. Yeah. Yep. It's good to hear from. A couple of things I want to talk about. Okay. Someone made the team today.

What do you got? Fully made the 53-man roster today. And I have, this was training camp 17. I've seen a lot of bad quarterbacks. Oh, yeah. Col Payton is on the 53 men roster. Wow.

Three throws today in like, I don't know, 10 snaps that he got that were like legitimate throws for a guy who is a developmental player and is a great athlete, he's on the team. He's going to make the team. What the hell are they going to do it? You can't have four quarterbacks.

I don't know, but Cole Payton's on the roster. What was your favorite of the throws? The deep one to Covey Yeah Was nice Yeah But there was who I can't remember Who the other one was two

I got it I got you I got it I got it I got it I have it I had a note that one That one was more layered The Cuez one The Cuez one on seven on seven The Cuez one and seven

One was really nice He had to layer it over the second level Yep Quez went and got it Really nice throw palpable buzz on the sideline after that field Yes and then in later in team drills Is when he hits Covey

Yeah, in the field Now that's again that was more in the developmental period against like the three or four defense. The Quez one was against like a really like a two kind of level defense. Did have a did put a ball on the ground, drop snap between he and Willie Lampkin.

So our guys are gonna work through that. But instead of that, yeah, I thought we thought we saw some good things. I'm calling it. He's on the team. They did. So you mentioned like the, the throw with Jalen where he didn't get his hips all the way around. It's under through that one. They did a lot of Jalen booting left. They also had Peyton, a lefty, booting right. That's interesting. So that was something notable.

We're going to try and reinforce those mechanics for those guys. Okay, that's interesting. UR. Yeah. Now, UR got no reps. Again, this is his first real, first real football practice of his life. Got no reps until the very end.

You know, didn't get any real reps in team drills until they did a developmental period at the end. And it's a thing to bookmark and just think about how far he has to come. You know, I think he was this, either his first or his second rep. He's lined up and Chance Campbell has to come up and literally move him over a gap. Right.

Like has to like put his hands on him and move him over so that there's defensive integrity. And then it's a play action. And UR follows the play action and is like still trying to go get the running back three seconds after everybody else has already realized it's play action and is reacting and he's just running the opposite way of the rest of the defense. I think the, the difference that would, would kind of expedite his process to like, seeing the field earlier. When UR messes up, we won't necessarily notice it or it's like one of those things where it's like, all right, like that didn't necessarily kill the defense.

When Jordan Milato was in the same area and he messed up, it's like, oh, that gets the quarterback killed. So you can't play him right now. And obviously an offensive line, you're not playing the guy, you're not platooning him. Whereas who are like, in theory, maybe not this year, you're red-churning this year, but like, you know, as you're working

him in, you can increase his role over time. Yeah, like, I don't know how much he's even going to get to play in the preseason. Yeah. Yeah. I will say the one thing I've gotten a sense of at least is that the room loves him yeah like the team like and so it's like you know that's one of those things that you might not think is important um but for everybody like like you know having that buy in from the

from the room like that's something that or a guy who has to be brought along yeah yeah like like for for clint hurt as you know when you're having these meetings over the course of camp and over the course of the summer and you're trying to narrow down to 53 and you're kind of like making your pitch and like standing on table for guys say like yeah like that those kinds of things help a player like who are who i think would be on the team or regardless, but that definitely helps. We got a lot more still to come. We're going to do it in training camp over time.

All right, let's play the notes game. E.J., you got anything you want to talk about from your notes? Yeah. Lane Johnson mentioned after practice something that was in my notes a few times. There were some false starts. This was some procedural issues. Lane said after practice that they have a new cadence, basically a new verbiage to go through.

And also, yeah, new cadence before the snap. that is making it so that they are kind of still working out the details with that. So I'm sure that's something that they won't be excusing, but there is at least an explanation behind it. I missed that part with Lane. I actually did talk with a player that, like, had said, yeah, they spent a ton of time during installs going through the cadence because it's so different than what they've done in the past.

I'm curious if, like, how is it so different? Like, I mean, I don't know. I don't know if you know exactly is it tied to this system. in general or do you think it's a specific Mannion thing? I think it's just different than what they've done. Okay. Some of the things that, you know, when we talk, when Lane's talking about like the

disguising your intentions and like marrying everything up where it looks and feels the same to the defense, it's a lot of that like harping on the details of that. Okay. Interesting. Okay. Good one. That's what I was wondering. The thing that I think Bo was alluding to is like on a college football field, he stood out more. And I know that like that's like, duh, but he doesn't stand out.

Like even when you asked me about it, I'm like, well, where is he? No. It took you time to find him. It's not like how he found his really good Tyree Jackson. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. The guy who is an alien. He's like, oh, there he is.

No, he's not undersized, but like he's pretty much just normal tight end size. Yeah. Yeah, like I'm looking up. And he's got like a, he's got a bit of a kind of like a little bit more torso than. Yeah, he's not like a long way. Yeah. Yeah, like I just looked up Grant Calcutera height and weight and then Eli Stowers, height and weight and they are the exact same height and weight.

And I think like that shows you like this is a guy who is like built as a physical freak. Now his movement skills have to really make up for the fact that, you know, he's not going to be a head and shoulder above the rest of the tight end group or really the guys who are going to be covering to that extent. You know one guy, a receiver that I'm like, don't rule him out. Like don't forget about this guy. Danny Gray. A lot of steam lasting or last year, year before.

Yeah. You just kind of watch him go through, and I'm like, he's well put together. He's pretty smooth. I know he's got some like some vertical juice too. He's just a name that I'm like, all right. He's a great kind of having the building. He's not going to make it faster. I'm leaving the light on it.

And he said it's like something they're going to have to work through this spring. I think like four out of the five they are ideal fits or at least they will be good.

I feel like I have a chance to be really good in this system too. I've seen it from afar, I'm actually studying it and working it and trying to put myself in the system, I feel like it's going to open up some things that I may not have been able to show as much in my career, so I'm excited for that part of it. These are the things. And it felt a little bit like, did you take that as a bit of a veiled shot at AJ? So that's what I'm wondering. You know, we'll step into Jalen translation corner for the end of the show here. I think you could read it that. way. I think more broadly, though, what I would say is that this has been a theme from Nick Siriani. And I think just a reflection that the leadership of the team have had about last season, the togetherness may be playing a factor in the struggles that they had. And Nick talked about

this in the spring about, you know, the best teams are the most together teams. And when he looks back over the time that he's been the Eagles head coach, the teams that have been the most like, you know, ride or die, like we all, we all we got, we all we need. And we look. And we look. And we look. And we look. those types of teams are the ones that have been able to succeed. And I think, you know, you can read between the lines that the teams that have struggled haven't always been that way. Now, correlation versus causation, right? Like, you know, the teams that are winning and, you know, that 2022 team in particular

was a juggernaut. Of course they loved each other and of course they loved playing with each other. But I do think that that's a messaging point that Nick has been harping on. I think Jalen has adopted it. But yeah, I think that like with the way that last year went, the way that AJ was very publicly frustrated for Jalen to come. come out and say like discipline and unity is the is a priority. Yeah.

And there was something else in there about the idea of sort of keeping things in house. Yeah. Which I think is part of his messaging as well. But then the one thing that he said, he said that he wrote down as Nick was talking was 100% alignment, zero percent entitlement. I think that's pretty good. Yeah. And again.

I also appreciate unlike Siriani, that's like those are parallel words. that works um yeah i thought it was a strong message i think it's jalen's new mantra alignment and entitled yeah 100% alignment nobody entitled so it was good yeah i thought it was a good mantra from jalen um got some good jalenisms today uh but yeah i mean i i like the uh the opening statement from jane let us let us know what's on his mind um i also think like are we ever going to wade back into this AJ Brown, like, keeping an eye on your ex waters?
