And welcome to the PHOI Eagles podcast
on a Monday afternoon live from the Xfinity Lounge
and presented by Ashley Bowulf, E.J. Smith
will join us in a little bit live
from the Eagles Complex, where they had practice today.
Pushed it back a little bit, so we've got some moving parts,
but we've got you fully covered, and we start right away
with the man himself, the great Fran Duffy on the Xfinity Mobile call in line.
Let's get into the details of the preseason opener.
Fran, how are you?
Doing great. Yeah, we got a lot of new football to watch over the last couple of days.
So it's good days in the Duffy House.
All right. Let's get into the offense first.
Let's do it through the prism of the Ace Hardware Home Services temperature check.
And I'm curious, Fran, Sunday morning, your first film to review of the Eagles season.
What is the first thing that you did?
What is the first thing that you were excited to do?
The first thing, the first unit I wanted to watch was the offensive line.
I've said it a couple of times over the last week or so that Willie Lampkin was definitely
like my number one attraction, like the guy I wanted to see most.
But really it was Markell Bell.
You know, Mark Hell Bell getting the start and then just kind of getting his feet wet,
at right tackle.
Like what did he look like?
So yeah, I wanted to start in the offensive line.
We only saw a handful of snaps from Drew Kendall, but there's the young second year
offensive line.
And then you have the rookie Mike Amaris.
So just that group in general was definitely where I wanted to start my attention.
Now just quickly from a process standpoint, if we can get nerdy at the top of the show,
this is obviously a much different experience than like watching the film of a regular season game, right?
Because you don't care about the scheme.
It's a little bit more maybe like college film because you're just watching the players.
Is that right?
It is a little bit of it.
It's a nice transition for me from watching college.
I'm watching college players year around anyway, but where I spend the entire spring.
and summer only watching college and it's like,
I'm going to be hyper-focused on this player.
Yeah, like watching the game sequentially
when I'm doing the film and like note-taking,
I don't care as much about like, oh, they were running
this concept against this coverage.
So to me, it's much more, all right,
I want to watch all of Markell Bell.
Now I'm going to go watch all of Willie Lampkin.
Now I'm going to watch all of Eli Stowers.
Now I'm going to watch all of Jacorian Bennett.
I'm going to watch, you know, so just kind of go and just
pick players and just kind of go that way and just write
a quick little blur on each one and just kind of big
takeaways from that player.
All right.
Well, let's let's make the
people wait a minute for Willie, because I know that's what they really want. Let's start
with Markell Bell, because that is where he started. And realistically, the most important
player on that offensive line for the Siegel season, if he is going to potentially be the swing
tackle, and if he's going to be in the pipeline to potentially replace Lane Johnson at some point
next season, how did he look? First time out. What did you make of it? Yeah, for me and where I always
kind of start, especially with young players, is like, do you show that you believe?
long, right? Like, it goes back to the old Craveon LeBlanc quote of like, all right, you know,
how are you going to perform when the light's shining on your brightest?
It's the last thing you want. It's the last thing you want. So with Markell Bell, I would say he
cleared that bar. I thought that he handled himself pretty well. It is interesting, and we can kind of
get into this. You know, obviously, look, schematically, they're not going to show their cards.
We know that, you know, Nick Siriani is very, you know, sensitive to this, right? But, you know,
you're still going to run what you want to run like your day one install stuff and with that with all the
the run game and play action element of what they wanted to do from a past game standpoint especially
early on when the game was quote unquote like in hand they're you know like contested there were a lot of
like just clean dropbacks for these offensive linemen right so it's a lot of like all right play action
boot like you're not getting a ton out of that right from a past protection standpoint so he got
actually got a handful of reps against last year's second round pick and you know viewers the show
listeners to the show may remember us talking a lot about Mike Green last year as a potential
draft pick for the Eagles picking at the end of the first round. He was super super productive from
Marshall, you know, had some like off-field stuff ended up falling to the second round to the
Ravens. So I was like, all right, this is a good matchup for Markell Bell, like a nice little litmus test
here, you know, as a second year pro. There's only one real clear like one-on-one pass rush,
you know, past pro rep. I thought he looked pretty good on that rep. My favorite rep, my favorite rep,
from the night from Markel Bell was that Will Shipley run
that we had talked about in the post game show on Saturday night.
And so, you know, just kind of going through and just seeing all the,
it wasn't all perfect.
You know, there are some plays where you can kind of see like,
all right, the size definitely works against him at times,
just like it works in Willie Lampkin's favor.
It can work against Markell Bell at times.
But overall, I thought it was a nice showing from the rookie third round pick.
E.J. asked Sean Mannion before practice today about Willie, I mean,
Markell being in the two-point stance when the rest of the offense was in that
three-count stance? Did that stand out to you? Did it matter to you? There were a handful
where he was in a three-point. So he did put his head. I actually did not hear the answer
from Sean Manion on that. He just said they asked him to do different things at different times.
He didn't really get into the weeds on it. The big thing that I would imagine is the coach
said, look, like, you know, you can, and this is just like from my understanding of it,
whether it's college or pro,
line up how you want in your stance,
but you got to make sure that you disguise it,
whatever,
whatever, you know,
we don't want tells as an offense,
you know,
to tell a defense,
hey, if he lines up this way,
it's past 95% of the time.
So if you're going to be at a two point,
that's fine,
but you better be able to disguise it
when you're coming off the ball.
And so I would imagine that that's a point of emphasis
for Markell in those spots.
Yeah, it reminds me of,
I did a story once on Darius Slay,
and Jonathan Ginn was talking about how he,
coaches technique a certain way,
Slay does it a different way, and he lets Slay
do it his way. And I think there's something to
prove me wrong.
Like, you can do your way
as long as it works.
And if it's not working, then we're going to come
over to my way. And I,
you know, I remember this is, because this is,
every single position has certain battles
like this. And I remember listening to Jason
Avant talk about this publicly with
some of the issues that he had with Chip Kelly
and their, his coaching staff, when
when Jason was with, with the
and it was like, yeah, like, I wanted to run routes to see my kind of way.
And they were like, no, like, you have to do it this way.
And obviously, we know, like, some coaches are a little bit more rigid with that than others.
All right.
So good debut for Markle Bell, put it in the bank to see what he does the rest of the preseason.
Let's talk Willie.
That's what the people are here for.
Obviously started the game at center and then got most of the rest of his reps at right guard.
It looked good live.
How did it look on tape?
Look good on tape.
Yeah, to me, like, as expected, very light on his feet.
really strong, you know, never looked overwhelmed whatsoever, you know, watching him going up
against that Ravens defensive line. And they weren't playing, obviously, you know, their front line
players. But I thought he held up well. One thing that really stood out, his finish and like the
strain and like, always throwing the last shove and he's always like, you know, just like locked
onto guys. And you see like the torque. And, you know, it wasn't as flashy as what you saw
with Markell Bell when he torques the defensive end. It kind of turns him outside on that Will Shipley
run. But he is, you know, people think of like a finishing for an offensive line.
he like dumps him into the ground.
That's not, yes, that's a finish.
But a finish is like, do you stay latched on?
And like as the action goes past you, you're still locked on to that guy.
Like you don't need to dump him to the ground as long as you're still engaged.
That's Lampkin every single time.
I know that there have been a couple breakdowns.
I think I retweeted one from Jeff Schwartz,
former NFL offensive lineman, just pointing that out with Lampkin on that one third downplay,
where you see him like down the field and just like constantly going,
constantly straining to finish.
So that was one thing that really stood out.
I do like the fact that we saw him at center,
we saw him at guard.
And again, just like never overwhelmed whatsoever.
And that's what you're looking for.
Now, we all love Willie Lampkin.
The size is such a curiosity.
It's so cool to see someone that small, get it done.
Because of that size,
I think we've all sort of thought he's probably realistically center only.
But, you know, he's held up at guard over the course of camp.
He held up at guard in this game.
Do you think there is any way
in which he is better suited at guard than center
because he doesn't have to worry necessarily about snapping
and then going like he can be fully ready at the snap
you can maybe game plan for when you need to give him help
a little bit more.
It is the position he played mostly in college.
Does there anything to that?
I think if they had their druthers,
they probably would rather not.
It's the same conversation that we had
when Cam Juergens first came in.
It was like, oh, like Jorgans could play guard
and you put him right next to Kelsey.
It's like to have two.
guys that are that undersized right next to each other. And obviously, Lampkin is like an extreme
outlier where Juergens is undersized, but, you know, kind of run of the mill undersized at that
position. Having both he and Jurgens next to each other, I think could be problematic at times.
But if those are the best five, those are the best five. So I think that's just like one of those
necessary evils and things that you would just kind of like greet your teeth and bear it as a coaching
staff. But look, if he's the best man, like he's the best man. He'll be, you know, next man up.
I do think that that proven versatility is definitely advantageous for him.
Very quickly, you thought Truchenda looked good in his relatively few snaps?
Yeah, it wasn't anything where I was like, oh, like, but, you know, the fact that he only played,
what was it, like six snaps?
He's going to make the team.
He's going to be the top interior.
Yeah, he's on the team.
He's the top interior offensive linemen.
All right.
Last guy on the offensive line.
Michael Morris, the sixth round pick.
I thought first blushed live that it looked like he handled himself well.
I think he's had a pretty good camp, played left guard, played deep into this game.
But what did the film say?
A thumbs up on Michael Morris.
I like what I saw from him.
You know, to me, and again, it's a matter of like expectations and like, all right, like, you know, do you clear the bar of competency?
And I thought that Michael Morris definitely did not shy away here in his first NFL action.
I thought he looked light on his feet for a big man.
You know, I think that didn't look out of place.
There was one rep where he was a little bit late, like getting up to the second level, like mentally late.
But outside of that, like, I really like.
liked what I saw.
There was a good pass-off with Jake Majors inside on a stunt on third and long.
I said this last week at some point, or maybe the week before,
but if you're going to put them in the same bucket of prospect,
like tier-wise as Cam Williams and Miles Hinton last year,
I've seen more from Michael Morris through a handful of practices watching the Offensive Line
and then, you know, this game than what I saw from those guys a year ago.
And honestly, I think both of them are probably on the,
clearly on the outside looking in for the roster this year.
Whereas I look at Morris, I'm like,
this guy's challenging for 53 personally.
I like what I saw from him on Saturday night.
Okay, good to keep in mind.
Let's close the book on the Ace Hardware Home Services temperature check.
A few more guys to ask him about on offense
before we move over to the defensive side of the ball in the B-block friend.
I think we all want to know about Eli Stowers.
He had that holding penalty on the first play.
They asked him to do a good bit of blocking.
Obviously not his forte.
How did it look to you?
yeah it wasn't great um you know just kind of going back and just way and watching all those
reps it's fun it is funny uh i do this all the time when i a lot of the times when i post clips on
you know social media whether it's you know whatever we're no matter of the platform there are
times where i will just post it like all right like here are all of such and such as reps right
are here is this jalen hurts throw or here is this you know and you get people that watch the
same footage and it's like you know you see one thing on one side once it's like you know you see one thing
one thing on the other and everyone says it with such great certainty.
You know, it's like, oh, like the willingness is there and he's better than Greg
Calcutera right now.
And then there's others like, this guy has no shot.
Like, just like that both ends the spectrum, you know, fighting over that in social media.
The way I would look at it with Stowers is that they, because some people are like, oh,
like this is, why would they use him this way?
I think it was like a litmus test.
Like, it's all right.
Let's see what you got.
Yeah.
Yeah, we're going to throw you into the deep end here.
I would say it mostly didn't go well.
I posted a handful of the clips that were like, like his blocking reps.
There were a few others that were he like he was on the backside.
But these were the ones that either they ran, you know, behind him or like in his general vicinity.
Yeah, like, yeah, I think you'd probably want to see more.
That said, it's what, you know, we all expected, right?
We expected it to look like this.
So, you know, I think when you're looking at Stowers, yeah, I think it's kind of status quo as to where we felt going into the game.
So you think it's unlikely that he can be.
a real like active week one essentially i think that they would have to have a really good plan
and the other one would be if they want to play multiple types if you want to be a 12 personnel
team right and i i actually think this is a real thing if they want to be a 12 personnel team which
i do think they do you can't go in with three into a game with three tight ends and him being one of
them because if there's an injury to god or to month they can't play the way they want to play
I don't think that they could play,
and that's including Calcuttaire in that mix as well.
They would not be able to play the way that they want,
and if they want to live in that like 12 personnel world.
And so, you know, I think if he's going to be active,
it would be like as the fourth tight end,
and then you mix him in,
like he might get the third most snaps,
but you know what I mean?
Like you want somebody else to kind of be there
to handle some of that every down duty.
All right, last got to ask you about the man
who lit the league on fire with his dining.
touchdown drive at the end of the game.
Cole Payton, how did he look on film?
I look, look, he had a bad sack on his first drop back
where he ran out of balance.
Like, all right, he's got to learn,
all right, throw that one away.
There was a little bit of like predetermination
on some things where it's like, all right, he kind of put it up there
and, you know, kind of a dangerous throw
in the middle of the field kind of deal.
But look confident.
Like, you know, again, like,
what did he look like compared to Kyle McCord
at this time last year?
I like what I saw from Peyton compared to what we saw from Kyle McCord this time last year.
So I think plenty to build on and be excited about.
Yeah, I like what we saw from Payton.
Honestly, the touchdown to Esoukanma at the end, you know, when we're watching it live,
I'm like, all right, like, yeah, he scrambled, he ran around, he made the play.
You know, that's a nice play.
Watching it, he actually did this really subtle thing that I didn't pick up on watching it live.
And, you know, I'm not going through all the replays just before.
the post game show started.
He rolls, he's rolling to his right.
So, you know, for other quarterbacks, like rolling to his left, because it's his off throwing
hand.
So he's rolling opposite.
And he kind of closes off his stance as if he's going to throw to the middle of field.
There was a receiver coming from the backside crosser, closes a stance off like he's going to
throw to the middle.
The defender that was over as Okinawa kind of cheats is like, all right, he's kind of
reading Peyton and drifts towards the middle.
And that leaves as Okinawaughan open.
As soon as that DB moves, Peyton like resets and throw.
And I was like, oh, sort of flick of the wrists.
Yeah.
I wasn't familiar with that part of your game.
Paul Payne.
Like that was, that was nice.
And that would be something I would love to like, kind of ask,
all right, like, how intentional was that?
You know, that kind of, you know, the last thing that I try,
I always try to avoid this is like, you know,
saying like, oh, yeah, this is definitely what this guy was thinking here on this play.
Because sometimes, you know, they're just athletes and they go out and they make play.
So I would love to hear him kind of like talk through that.
Because if that was intentional, that was a really savvy play there on that touchdown.
Manion was asked about his performance.
and said, yeah, like that one third down throw
into double coverage was one that, you know,
he might want to have back, but otherwise, yeah, he was impressed.
And you don't get to see his athleticism in practice.
And so it was nice to see it stand out in that setting.
So positive debut for Colpaden.
I think so.
Quick break on the PHA My Eagles podcast.
Back with more on the other side.
Fran stays with us.
We talk about the defensive side of the ball.
And after that, E.J. Smith will join us to talk about today's practice,
long injury list, but Devante Smith is back.
What if you had the same stain on your shirt for five whole years and nobody told you
about it? That would be pretty tough. Almost as tough as if you had internet that kept
raising their prices every single year, making you pay more, making it worse.
It's tough to be a consumer these days.
but not at Xfinity
because of the five-year price guarantee
where they tell you
that you can have five years of reliable,
intelligent Wi-Fi
at the same price for five years in a row.
We know how much can change over the course of five years.
You know what's not going to change?
The cost of your internet.

You guys know those moments.
When you're not really looking for a full meal,
but you just want a little something.
Maybe it's that long commute home like I have.
I drive past four or five Wawa's,
and by the time I'm passing the fourth of the fit,
there's almost no way that I'm not stopping.
And that's exactly where Wawa can come in
in the clutch for you guys as well.
Wawa has become my go-to.
Anytime I'm craving a sweet treat.
They've got so many options
depending on what you're in the mood for,
if you're feeling something rich and creamy,
you've got to try the strawberry cheesecake cream smoothie.
And if you want something that tastes like summer,
the peanut collata float is the perfect answer.
Or if you're looking for something you can really dig into,
the caramel cookies and cream parfait,
it's seriously hard to beat.
It's a perfect afternoon pick me up on these hot days
or a little reward after a long day or even a late night dessert run.
So no matter what you're craving,
Wawa's got ice cream parfait,
floats and cream smoothies ready ready whenever you are again on these hot days got to have a
wawa back in the p hosel wangos podcast bow wolf and fran duffy talking about the film from the
preseason opener defensive side of the ball and the chat is asking fran about tie robinson
big sack in this game looked like there was a little bit of pass rush juice was there more to it
when you zeroed in on him yeah i think that look the the sack was really nice uh you know smooth cross
chop move where you won quickly and you saw the kind of the surge to to close late and finish.
I thought he had a really good execution of an ET stunt with Jose Ramirez on the very next
play on a third down. So I think just, you know, we saw some good flashes. It wasn't all perfect.
But yeah, to me, it's a good sign that we're kind of seeing him kind of surge here over the last
week and a half or so because it was obviously a very quiet rookie season for a guy that was an
older senior coming in, only one year production in Nebraska.
So, you know, there was definitely some concern coming off of his rookie season.
And even then, had a quiet start to camp.
But, you know, whether it's kind of like a fire being lit under him and just kind of
understanding the urgency here, it's good to be able to see him respond the way that he has
over the last week.
You mentioned Jose Ramirez.
Let me give you a quick injury report from today's practice because there were a bunch of guys
who did not practice today who played in the game the other night.
And they were only in, you know, shorts and shoulder pads.
today. So it was not the most
crazy practice, especially
with the Patriots on deck. Jacorian Bennett
who played in the game did not practice
with a knee injury. Tank Bigsby,
toe, Grand Calcutera back.
Jonathan Jones was already out. Mackay Lemon was
already out, although he was doing a little bit more today.
Mack McWilliam. So I think we will get to.
Did not practice with a groin injury.
John Ajukwu. Damien Pierce was
already out. Jose Ramirez. Sean
Wade with the dreaded eye
and shoulder and Johnny Wilson
with a knee. And then on the
Limited's, Devante Smith, again, elevated to limited from having not practiced.
Same for Cole Wisniewski.
We'll see if he's able to practice against the Patriots.
No word on Quignan and Cooper?
They were not listed.
That's good.
All right.
I was thinking about that for the practice today, yeah.
I was thinking about that for the upcoming one-on-ones this week with AJ Brown.
I was like, oh, man, that would stink if we didn't have him in Quinyan on the outside.
Yeah, I was able to watch the first half of practice today.
or so and Vic was doing a thing where like they started in the base defense all the ones are out there
and then like every snap he's throwing in somebody new you know they're just trying all these different combinations
and you know sort of testing for all these different things so you've got ambray thomas at right
corner one snap you've got gush in the safety at one at one snap you know they're rotating all these
different guys especially in the secondary but quinyon and cooper were out there all right who was your
who was your favorite person to watch on the defense who flashed for you um
favorite person to watch.
I mean, Trotter,
Trotter had a good,
had a good outing.
You know,
there was a well-time blitz on the sack,
on the opening drive,
where he just beats the left guard off the ball.
He did a really good job timing that up.
He had a couple nice sticks in the run game.
I thought Jehad Campbell looked really good as well.
There was that play that I,
we talked about it on the post game show Saturday night,
but it was kind of confirming on the film.
Like, yeah,
he's,
he's,
it was a play action boot to his left to the,
the offensive right.
And right before the snap, he's pointing left, left, left, left, left.
Trotter's over on that side.
And you could see, like, Shahad read that play really well.
He's calling it out before the snap, respects the run fake,
but he's breaking with the risk.
Like, he sees it coming and actually sees it faster than Trotter does on that play.
You know, and I think Trayor would probably would you would attribute that to Trotter,
giving up a hedge underneath.
But I thought it was really good from Campbell, just kind of sniffing that out pre-snap
and, you know, being on top of it with the crosser coming his way.
Where are you on the idea that Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is a starting caliber linebacker?
I think that that's probably fair.
I think the definition and like the understanding of what a starting quality linebacker in today's NFL is probably important.
But yeah, I think that did.
He's a top 64 linebacker, but he's probably not a starting linebacker on a top five defense.
Right, exactly.
like now like that said is you know when i look at like the uh the rams and it's like yeah like what they
asked nate landman to do in that defense is i mean yeah jeremiah trader junior could go and play
linebacker for them um so i do think it's important to like but i don't think he could play
linebacker at a starting level for like robert sallo yeah um you know where they put on those
guys they put more on those guys so i do think that the scheme would be very so it would be it would
require the right set of circumstances for trow to be able to reach that level so that's why i
even struggle to say like, oh yeah, he's a top 64 linebacker because scheme dependent.
I think it would take the right set of circumstances.
Now, Prove John in the chat says that he is concerned about the depth in the secondary.
And that was my biggest takeaway on defense in a negative sense from this game is that
was a little bit disappointed in a group that I had higher hopes for, that backup secondary.
You know, Mac McWilliams gave up a bunch of catches, although to be fair, he did, you know,
come out injured today.
There were a few other ones.
Keely before the interception.
What did you make of that group?
and you know where were the positives they played a lot of zone and so i'm not okay i wasn't
particularly moved negatively by okay you know like when i watched like when i watched mac mc williams
and i'm watching keelie wringo it's like yeah like they're they're doing things that yeah like
it's it's because they're playing like high school versions of these coverages essentially uh like
even though like oh it's third down they're playing cover six which is what they what the eagles
typically have done in years past i don't think that they're like necessarily
necessarily, you know, matching these routes and plastering these routes to the, to the,
to the, quite to the level that they would, you know, in a typical week in like week nine,
right? So, yeah, it didn't, would I have liked to see them be a little bit better?
Yeah, MacM Williams gave up some catches underneath. Yeah, but like, I wasn't, I'm not walking away
panicking personally. Okay, that's good to hear. How about the Maximus Pully,
Kepenegas chicken race that is taking this city by storm, hoping to become the,
for safety.
Yeah, it was, honestly, one of the big things I wanted to see.
It was just like, all right, what did that, what did that battle look like?
So I started with the gush, shout out to Dink.
Started with the gush there.
Here's what I wrote down.
We got Julia doing the show today, which I'm very excited about.
And just the out of context sentence, I started with the gush, shout out to dink, is I think,
you know, that's what the show is all about.
Just perfect.
Didn't blow me away with his speed and explosiveness.
So that is one thing I'll say real quick.
It's different for me watching, you know,
because I'm watching these guys on tape constantly
throughout the course of the pre-draft process, right?
And then for two weeks,
watching them just like on the field
and then kind of recalibrating to like,
oh yeah, I'm watching them on film again.
It just seemed like, all right,
does the speed pop the same way in person
that it does on film?
With the gush,
doesn't blow me away with his like overall speed and explosiveness.
Watching moments on the special team's reps,
because I do think special teams will be big for both he and Pulley.
I would say, because he played as a gunner on the punt team,
I would say like nondescript early.
First couple reps didn't look great,
but he got better as the game went on.
He did a nice job of beating a vice,
you know, a double team on the outside.
He won inside in the third quarter and made the tackle.
He did some nice things on the kickoff team as well.
It was a good rep on the first team kickoff.
First guy to contact the kick returner on the first snap there.
Defensively, all the reps, both he and Pulley,
came in the second half. He played, Gush did primarily as the right safety. So he had Sean Wade and
Ambrie Thomas in there at corner. He had Mac McWilliams who came in a nickel. He had a good tackle
in the flat against Adam Randall on a swing pass where he came down in cover three as an underneath
like curl flat player and then made the stop on an island. That was a good rep. Next rep he did a good
job of attacking a block from wide receiver Cornelius Johnson who was like big body like six two,
six three. And so like, you know, just kind of driving him back and push him right into the running back.
I thought that was really good.
He did get lucky on the Turan Jackson sack,
remember the off the play action boot
where Taran Jackson did not bite whatsoever.
Who did bite on that was Gush.
His eyes were kind of in the backfield
and the receiver blew by him on a deep corner route.
It would have likely been a big play at Taran Jackson
not been there for the sack.
But my favorite rep from Gush actually came.
It was the Austin Reed,
the quarterback for the Ravens,
his touchdown scramble.
So he's lined up in the slot against,
it was a double post combination.
So it's like, you know,
First post, he's locked up in the slot.
So the inside guy is running across the field,
and then there's a post coming behind him.
So he actually passes the first post off to Polly,
who is playing as the post safety there,
pass him up, and then gets his eyes back around
and is right there to defend the backside post.
So it was actually a really good rep from both he and Pully there on that play.
The problem was that they kind of lost contain
and the quarterback goes out the back door.
But just kind of putting those guys isolated,
I like what I saw from Gush on that play.
Now, the lack of explosiveness did show up there.
Like he lost the foot race to the corner.
You kind of need that from him.
Yeah, the coverage aspect of things, I thought was pretty good.
So I thought Goosh was solid.
It was a fine debut, but like not overboard.
And Pulley?
All right, so it was our own pulley.
So I thought the special team stuff was more notable and better from Pully than it was from Gush.
So he was the personal protector on the punt team.
and that's like that's a that's a very important role that's that's something that you're
putting a lot of that's like chris marigose did that for the you know corey clement was
pretty you know like that's that's an important role um i thought that he showed really good
discipline like in terms of like uh you know getting down field like his uh like in terms of like
his lanes and coverage i thought he did a good job there uh good angles good pacing there was
one where he kind of ran right by the punt return i'm like all right he's got to like temper that down
a little bit very next nap now unfortunately there were a lot of put reps so we got to see lots of
lots of reps for these guys.
Very next rep, he geared down and he made the stop one-on-one.
It was a really good improvement from one step to the next.
I thought he did a good job on the kick-return unit as well.
Both he and Gush lined up next to each other on the kick-return unit.
Again, like Gush, all second half on defense, he's the left safety primarily.
Like Gush, he had a really good stop in the alley where he came down from depth.
He's lined up as a deep safety.
The running bat was a perimeter run from Dante McMillan.
He did a good job of triggering, getting good.
downhill and making the stop one-on-one.
There were two examples where he was like a top-down safety.
So again, like playing like 12, 15 yards off the ball.
And he broke on routes early right in front of him.
Once it was thrown and once it wasn't, but he broke on the throw early.
So I thought his eyes were really impressive.
And like I said, he was the post-safety taking that pass off from Gush on that,
on that touchdown run from the quarterback.
This is a pretty glowing review.
I liked my soft and pull.
Again, like I wouldn't like say like, oh, man, like this.
Yeah.
But if I were doing a 53, I think I'd have Pulle On.
Okay.
I think I might have Pullian.
Interesting.
That's a good one to remember.
All right.
Before we let you go, friend, quickly, I'm going to let you choose.
Deontale Lawson, Josh Weiru, O'R. Bernard, who is worth talking about?
And what is it that you need to say?
Ooh.
I liked some things we saw from all three.
Let's talk through Wero.
Okay.
Oh, Wairro.
That's right.
Yes, I talked to somebody.
So it is Josh Wareu.
All right.
So he actually played four.
snaps before that snap where it was talking about the broadcasts were like, you know,
this was his first place. So we saw a handful of snaps beforehand.
Mostly off the edge did walk out a little bit like over like the near slot.
Run game wasn't pretty.
But we saw like the surges of athleticism that were impressive.
I, I kind of think that the, so here's what he said he played a lot of snaps.
Like he played more snaps than who are.
Yes.
And I think we talked about this a little bit before camp.
him playing a lot and there being like some bad film might work in their favor to say like to try and sneak them through right where it's like oh like this guy like he's got planning to work on so i think that with weru uh there were some good flashes but also you can see like all right like he's probably not ready right now that might work on their favor uh come the end of august that's interesting i'm i'm i'm curious to see what they do uh with him and yeah it's gonna be fascinating how that how they play that all right friend who are is the flash of uar we're good like in terms of like we're
not as flashy as Waru.
He's definitely not as far long.
He's going to need more time.
That'll be, that's another one to track.
I think that my general thought on those two guys is the 100th percentile outcome of both of them.
UR is more important.
Like UR at his best theoretical possibility is going to be a better player than the best version of Waru.
I think Weroo is more likely to get to, you know, a playable player.
You know, there are more outcomes where he is rosterable and a worthwhile member of your defense
and can be kind of a designated pass rusher,
whereas there's a long way for UR to go before he can even get on the field.
And I also think that Waru is more likely to get there sooner
and could potentially contribute on special teams.
So maybe that appeals to more teams.
he requires a little bit less individual development.
Like there are lots of raw edge guys who have great athleticism
that teams know how to work with.
You don't get quite as many defensive tackles who have no idea what they're doing.
But I also think that the Eagles are invested more in the UR story than the Wero story.
So I don't know how it's going to play out.
I'm curious.
I, but you know, for most of our viewers,
they've played Madden at some point.
they understand like, oh, like, their awareness rating is like all the way down, right?
Like, these guys just have no idea what they're doing.
And so it stands to reason that if they can get up to like, uh, competent levels in that area,
that some of this would be fixed.
What I would say is like both guys tested extremely well, like at that workout, like in the
pre-draft process.
Um, I think Waru's athleticism is more functional, like it's more apparent on film.
Whereas with UR, like, he's a little bit more like mechanical in his movements and more like,
uh, like he looks tight.
He looks like, it's like, you know what it's like, it's like, um, it's like, um,
Taylor Mays when he was a USC where it's just like he's just like all muscle and like just like
straight and that's kind of with who are or it's just like man like he it's like he he you see him and
he looks the part and you see him moving and like it shows up but the athleticism either like even
like the defeating that cut block and things like are he's just he's a he's a little tight um but
that's also like you're kind of swimming up top like you're swimming mentally you're swimming so
you know hopefully as that stuff gets a little bit better you know maybe he that's
athleticism can show up a little bit more,
you would say the same thing about Stowers,
like the same kind of deal,
where it's like, you know, some guys,
you know, if they're behind mentally,
the physical falls off.
So you're hoping that with all those guys,
that that can improve.
All right, the great friend Duffy,
thank you so much.
You will be taking the lead on tomorrow's show
as we head up to New England.
Looking forward to that.
I have some special guests.
Thank you for the review.
We will see you tomorrow.
Sounds good, guys.
All right.
Back with more on the other side.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day.
You can stream almost anything instantly on your TV.
You can order food in like 15 minutes.
It'll be at your door.
But somehow getting tickets to a game or a concert still feels like a full-time job.
You're dealing with waiting rooms, prices jumping around, hidden fees.
It could be really brutal.
That's why I've been using the GameTime app.
It just makes the whole thing so much easier.
I was on the app the other day looking at some Sixers tickets,
you know, really excited for the upcoming season.
And I just love that what you see is,
is what you pay. There's no surprise fees popping up a checkout, nothing that you need to worry
about there. And another great feature, before you buy, you can actually see the view from your
seat. If you're looking at some MSG tickets for the season opener, you can see what your seat's
going to look like. So you're not guessing if you're stuck behind a pole or something. You've also got

Yeah, just heard from him on the ad read.
Now you get to see him in person.
The great E.J. Smith, our Eagles, Insider,
live from the Eagles facility.
E.J., how you doing?
I'm doing well.
I'm disappointed that they got rid of my backdrop here.
You know, there used to be like a picture of the link.
I'd always make sure I was centered on it,
but you just got to deal with the blank wall for today.
Well, that's okay.
I got to see the first half of practice or so.
you get to see all of it.
What were your big takeaways?
What do we need to know?
Yeah.
So I think the biggest thing that, you know,
somebody were asking me, what's going on at practice?
You know, what do I need to know?
It was an encouraging day for the receive,
the top of the receiver depth chart.
Devante Smith returned to practice today.
He was limited with the hamstring injury.
We saw him go through individual,
which I thought was encouraging.
And McKay Lemon,
I don't know if you caught this before you left,
Bo.
McCoy Lemon was doing some sprints on a side field
while the team was, you know,
going through practice,
which is the first time we've seen him do that.
And then at the end of practice, he went through an individual drill.
Now, you know, it's like a low impact individual drill, you know,
kind of jogging near the sideline and working on, you know,
sideline catches.
But I thought that that was a big step for Mackay Lemon, you know,
and it's definitely the most significant step toward a return we've seen from him
since he went down with the hamstring injury.
And I think he probably is closing in on coming back.
I wouldn't expect to see him at joint practices,
but yeah, I think he'll be back soon.
Yeah, I would think that based on what we've seen,
in the past. It's trending
that like maybe Devante
will be kind of a participant
in joint practices. Like we might see him out there.
And Mackay Lemon like next Monday, the Monday
after the second preseason game. Maybe he'll be back
on the field. And it makes sense. You're
now beginning to point toward
week one. Let's see if we can get these guys
in the field. But you know, Mackay's got to prove that he can stay healthy.
Yeah, I agree. I think the Eagles are going to be
overly cautious with both of these guys. But especially
you factor in that
Mackay Lemon has dealt with this injury before,
you know, you do want to make sure you're taking
your time with it there. So,
you know, with Devante, I could see him going
in joint practices. I could also see them
wanting to hold him back because those practices
are a little more intense. But yeah,
I think the fact that he's back in the
in a limited fashion today
shows you that, you know, if they were going to play a game
tomorrow, I imagine Devante would be available for them.
Now, you were very excited I saw
on our Slack about an answer in
the post practice press conference from Cam Juergens of all people.
Yeah.
About Willie Lampkin.
What was it that he said?
What do we need to know?
Yeah, he was raving about Willie Lampkin's levers.
You know, I asked him, you know, somebody, obviously Cam Jurgens is very experienced
having assignments against guys who outweigh him by 30, 40, 50 pounds.
And I was curious, like, what works about Willie Lampkin?
You know, how does Willie Lampkin make it work against bigger defensive tackles?
And he said the first thing that you have to do is you have to have great technique to be able to do that.
And then he said, you have to have really good levers.
And, you know, Willie Lampkin, like, he's amazing at those things.
And then he went on to say the third thing is that Willie plays, you know, through the echo of the whistle, right?
You know, that it's, you know, an effort thing for Willie as well where he's got a tendency to finish blocks, a want to to finish blocks.
And, you know, it was fun.
Like, I feel like Cam Jurg has kind of lit up with the chance to talk about Willie Lampkin.
Because, you know, I think that there is like a game recognized game there between two,
undersized centers, you know?
Yeah, I mean, listen, I think it's going to make the team, don't you?
I think so, too.
Yeah, he was on my 53 before the game.
You know, I thought you put this really well last week.
I'm going to keep borrowing it that you kind of have to keep asking the questions of these guys.
You know, you go from a training camp, darling, a fun player.
Oh, my God, look at this guy be.
But at some point, you have to ask yourself, like, can he block a defensive tackle on third
down in a game that matters?
And I think he did a good job of showing you that he can,
hold up against bigger defensive
tackles. You know, obviously in the preseason game,
I'm excited to listen back to hear what Fran had to say about
the tape with Willie, but, you know, for what we saw, I think he is
answered, yeah, exactly, right. He's answering those
questions. So, yeah, you know, I think he's earning,
he's earning trust, I think is the important thing to say
from the coaching staff and from his teammates.
All right, you want to talk about like nitty-gritty notes
from practice? Do you have anything we need to talk about?
I've got some one-on-one notes, but I'll let you go first.
Yeah, the big one,
I'm not sure if you were there when it happened.
Michael Carter had an interception today.
Did you see it?
I did not see that.
Okay.
So Michael Carter picked off Jalen Hertz today.
You know,
he was in great coverage on a deep crosser from Quez Watkins.
And, you know,
I'm sure that Eagles fans will pick up on the fact that it was Quez Watkins,
working with the starters there.
It was a heavy rotation day.
We saw a lot of Danny Gray,
you know,
a lot of,
a lot of all the receivers,
really, with the first team offense.
When I was there, the defense,
it was doing the same thing.
You know, it was like throwing one person in every rep.
So this was very much, I think, just like get everybody involved.
Yeah.
So receiver aside, you know, it was kind of something we've seen from Jaylin a few times this summer
where the ball placement allows for the undercut from the defensive back.
And that's what happened.
Michael Carter undercut the route and came up with the interception.
Overall, I thought it was a good day for Michael Carter playing in the nickel with the starters a little bit.
And then obviously working in at safety as well.
You know, I know you guys were talking about the depth in the secondary.
I thought this was one of his better practices today.
You know, not to say that he's going to push Marcus Epps or anything like that quite yet,
but I think at the very least, like, you can feel good about him being the first guy up at nickel and at safety.
I think the team feels good about him.
Yeah, I think he's pretty solidly safely on the roster, don't you?
Oh, for sure.
Yeah, I think he's all on the roster.
Because I don't think they want to rep, like, you have to ask yourself, like, can you get him through to the practice squad and do you even want to risk it?
And for him, I don't think you'd want to risk it.
you know, he's going to be too important at two different spots.
You know, I actually think Michael Carter's versatility along with Cooper to jeans,
when you're looking at the 53, because both of those guys can play safety,
you can get creative with the other safety spot behind Marcus Epps and Drew McCuba.
And I think that, you know, they're not going to want to lose that versatility from him.
So yeah, it was a good day for him.
And I think that that kind of leads itself into a conversation I wanted to have with you
about like the interceptions that Jaylin's thrown this summer.
Yeah.
Um, anecdotally, and I can check with our Elliot, the stackkeeper on this one, but anecdotally, I think this is the most I've seen him throw in a summer.
Um, you know, I feel like we're, we're in the handful range now, somewhere between like four and six, I would guess.
Um, and you know, some of these are desperation heaved. I'm not saying that, you know, there is context that's important here.
But overall, I think one of the questions I have going into the regular season is how is Nick Siriani's philosophy on turnover is going to mesh.
with a scheme that is going to inevitably lead to a few more interceptions because he's throwing
in a more dangerous area of the field. I think we've seen that kind of play out a little bit as
training camp has progressed. I think Jaylen's had a pretty encouraging summer, but the
turnovers have been part of the equation. And I kind of think like it's going to look that way
in the season too. You know, you're not going to have perfection in terms of turnover avoidance
if you're constantly, you know, throwing dig routes and, you know, deep crosses over the middle
of the field. That's a really good question.
you know, does Siriani have the stomach for that?
Or, or, you know, will he want them to change what they're doing
and all of a sudden go into a shell just to avoid that
or will you open up the passing game?
It's a good question.
I am not concerned about the interceptions,
just like I was not, you know, excited about him
only throwing one interception last summer or whatever, right?
Like, it's practice, it's fine, it happens.
I know Mannion has said that, you know,
he views practice as treat it like a game,
don't do something in practice you wouldn't do in a game.
And so I think we should take these interceptions at the face value that they have.
But I think it's fine.
I mean, the best quarterbacks in the league throw interceptions.
It's okay.
Yeah, I tend to agree with you.
I think the only caveat I'd give you is like the ball placement not always being great.
You know, it's not like he's taking chances.
It's not like, oh, like you try to squeeze that one in there.
It's more about like you have to be further out in front.
Now, again, like the Hollywood Brown interception.
heard around the world, you know, the one that got put out on social media.
I mean, it wasn't a great ball, but I think that there's a lot of context there about the
route precision and sort of the timing of everything.
I think that today's you might be able to say the same.
But still, turnover is nonetheless.
I agree with you.
I don't think it's a concern.
I think how Nick feels about the number of interceptions is something to keep an eye on at the very
at least.
I think you're right.
It's a good question.
All right.
We've got to take a break.

would you like to hear some one-on-one no cj this was during seven on seven so you were watching
i was watching the o line d line now again they were in just shorts and shoulder pads today so
nothing crazy.
A lot of work for the top guys.
Started with Nolan Smith.
Yeah.
Going up against Lane Johnson.
First rep, Nolan gets inside Lane.
Good rep from Nolan Smith.
Beat Lane Johnson.
I thought it was a good rep.
Clean win.
Good job by him.
And then the second one, Lane settled down, you know,
got the win.
Although even that one,
Nolan got a little bit of movement on Lane.
So Nolan coming on a little bit,
I think after what was a slightly slow start to the summer.
Tyler Steen continues to have really good reps against Jalen Carter.
And it's like almost right now seems like he's got his number to some degree.
I'm sure there will be a time where like demonstrably Jalen Carter turns out the other direction.
But two good reps from Steen against Jalen Carter.
The second one was a great one where like he almost got Jalen Carter to slip.
It was a good one.
Cam versus Jordan Davis.
Good job by Cam Juergens.
first one was kind of a stalemate where Jordan Davis pushes into the pocket, but it was
kind of a loose, slowly situation for Juergens. And then the second one was a very good rep.
Ojamo against Lennon Dickerson. This was one where, so Dickerson gets the nice initial punch,
but Ojamo recovers very quickly and gets around Linden. And it was almost like Landon was not
ready for the second half of the snap. Like, and it's just, it's a little bit on my radar. He still doesn't
look fully right
physically to me.
I don't know if you feel the same.
Yeah.
Yeah,
quick note on Landon
that the kind of underspurs
what you're saying.
You know,
I made a big deal
at the beginning of camp
like no sleeves,
no braces.
There's a sleeve now,
you know,
like not saying that anything happened,
but,
you know,
I do think Brand's comparison
between him
and Jason Peters
at the end of his career,
it's kind of like
just manage your way
to week one.
To week one.
I think that's very,
very accurate. I have landed a few times in my notebook every day where it just feels like he's not
moving great. On the flip side, Cam Juergens, like he looks really good this summer. He looks
like his old self. I think they're kind of on opposite sides of that spectrum. I agree with that
completely. Jalax against Milata. First rep was one where Jalix gets some good push into Milata and
Jeremiah Washburn was excited about this rep even though it was not like a clean sack. And then
Milana does a great job on the second rep.
Then you've got Nolan back again going up against Fred Johnson.
And these were actually two good reps from Fred.
So I think Fred also coming on a little bit.
Then you had Jalen Carter getting another rep this time against, I think Steene again.
I think it was a rematch.
And he goes fake spin.
And I think Steen kind of held him on this one.
This one looked like it probably was a hold.
But then a stalemate there.
finally one last rep before they moved.
And that was Willie Lampkin at center handling Byron Young.
That's it.
Yeah, did you feel like those one-on-ones were like 80% speed?
There were a couple of reps where I was wondering if they were told like, you know,
let's not do anything full, like, you know, maybe don't do full speed,
but maybe like work your first move.
And if it doesn't work, then, yeah, just get back in the, in the group.
I think in every way today's practice was like, let's shake the rust off.
get ready for the joint practices.
Yeah, I agree.
Like, let's not do anything stupid today.
Yeah.
I had another note for you.
I have a couple more here, but a big one.
I want to pour cold water,
which we've already done a few times on the tank Bigsby,
like, you know,
is going to have a real role in the offense hype.
Yeah.
Carson Steel had like three or four carries with the starting offense today
because Tank Bigsby was injured.
I should get Tank Biggsby's injury designation for you here.
He was out with a toe.
entry today. I think that today showed you that Tech Bigsby's workload this summer, well,
I think he's a nice player and think he will have a role. I think tech bigsby having as many
carries with the starters this summer is a lot more about Saquan Barclay and them trying to manage
his workload than the actuality that like 10 Bigsby is going to be splitting carries with
Seekwon. You know, I think, you know, that might have been overstated early in camp, but I think
Carson Steele's role today really shows you that, you know, they just want to have a guy rotate him
with those guys.
Yeah.
I mean,
I think Tank is a good handcuff
for fantasy purposes.
Oh,
yeah,
for fantasy,
I totally agree.
Don't put them in your flex spot
in week one.
Give me at least,
at least get some proof of concept
before you,
before you buy the 21 personnel
package with the Eagles this year.
On Carson Steel,
do you think that there's a chance
that they're like totally slow playing
the fullback in this offense
and the Carson Steel is actually just going to be
the fullback on the team
and we'll see him like week one?
We haven't seen any,
any fullback usage this.
Yeah,
I'm about to say,
you would like to think
that they would have had it
in one of the install days.
And, you know,
I think,
like,
we haven't seen Cam Blatu do it.
He's been a tight end exclusively.
It feels like,
feels like they haven't in their back pocket.
I thought it was noteworthy
that Sean Mannion today,
like, you know,
talking about Willie Lampkin
and if they'll use him in any other way
that he poured pour cold water on that one.
He was like, nah,
like, you know,
right now he is center and guard for us.
So, yeah,
I think they probably will get creative eventually.
we have not seen it though i don't think it's going to be a part of like their their base offense so
yeah i'd be surprised at this point all right i got a question for you e j and we're going to do it in the
hand you dealt presented by our friends at bed parks and i've been thinking about this
competition for uh what could be the last roster spot at linebacker and so here's my question
between smile mondan dante lawson the undrafted rookie from alabama and chance campbell who got a little bit
love from Vic Fangio earlier in camp but has been injured.
Who of those three guys do you think is going to have the best NFL career from now forward?
Oh, that's a fun question.
You know, if I'm trying to size up the career, I feel like Sinalmonde might get
fewer or more chances because of his draft pedigree.
But I'm going to go Deontay Lawson.
I just, I buy in the Deontay Lawson.
I had him on my 53.
obviously you look good in the preseason.
Like, you know, my two guys, Deonté Lawson and Joshua Wareau.
By the way, I've been a note on Wareau here.
Where do you get off calling them your two guys?
Oh, yeah.
Let me, let me just tell you one thing.
You are getting UDFA mugged by me.
You're getting training camp.
Absolutely not.
By me and Joshua.
Where is my camp crush?
I invented the guy.
And Lawson, I gave my player the day.
And you barely even knew who he was when I did that.
These are my guys.
You can't steal my guys.
You know, Fran can attest because he probably saw my face
when Fran said that his last name as Wareau.
You invented Joshua Weiru.
I invented Joshua Wareau.
Because the evolution of the man,
I got confirmation from the man himself
that his last name was pronounced Weirut.
He laughed at the, I said, like it's Wareau, not Weiru.
And he's like, no, not weiru.
So I think we can set the record straight.
You heard he here first in the P.H.O. Eagles podcast.
Fran had it first.
Let me make that clear.
Fran Duffy, F Duffy NFL on Twitter had it first.
But yeah, no, those are my guys.
And as a result,
do you go with him.
You got Cam Latu.
You got Rick Wollin.
Okay?
Give me my guys back.
No, Rick Wollett.
I sold the stock.
I sold the stock on Rick Wollett.
You are like a terrible boyfriend.
You're jumping ship.
You got no loyalty.
Listen, I evolve over time.
I take in information.
I take information and I pick my guys as they come.
Absolutely.
So I'm going to take Deiante Lawson.
I'm going to keep buying all the Bionte Lawson stock.
I like the physical profile.
I feel like he's going to find a home in the NFL.
Yeah, I think the smart money is probably still on Mondin.
That he'll get more chances.
He will get shots.
But my heart might go Lawson as well.
I'm curious.
Campbell, the thing with Campbell is it's injuries, you know,
and he's healthy.
It does seem like he's got the physical traits.
But he's, he,
Campbell is probably when healthy,
the best player of the three.
them right now, but he's already languished on practice squads, you know, it's hard, you know,
as you said, Monde is going to get shots. I don't know that Campbell will get shots if he,
if it's not here. All right. Yeah, and Jordan Davis shout out, shout it out smile Mondin.
He said that he might be a breakout player to watch. It was like a week or two ago.
I don't remember where I saw it. But yeah, he, uh, he's been bullish on him.
Let's close the book on the hand you dealt presented by our friends at Park's Casino.
All right. What are the notes? What about from Sean Mannion?
before practice today. E.J. I told Fran about his answer to your Markell Bell question,
but what else? Yeah, from the Mannion.
This is a little unfair. A little ripping his shirt, I noticed, by the way.
Yeah, real football guy, real football guy with the ripped hoodie. You know, it's the dog days of
camp. Right at the scene, he's been wearing that bad boy out, couldn't be bothered to check it out,
didn't have, you know, didn't have his co-host to not tell him there was something wrong with his shoulder.
Yeah, he's like looking at parking.
Fraser like, you weren't going to tell me.
You were going to tell me that had a hole in it.
The quick shot man, you know, post practice,
even, have you seen this yet?
He was ripping like 60 yard bombs to,
he's working with Joe Casper in the secondary.
He's throwing like, you know, throwing passes,
helping him track the ball in the end zone.
Yeah.
And I mean, he is just unleashing these folks.
Like, these passes, man.
I'm a strong arm.
He's a very strong arm.
He felt very reminiscent of last season.
He talked about staying on schedule a lot
with the offense saying that they didn't get themselves into third and manageable, which again,
was reminiscent of hearing that did it bother you a little bit, the focus on got to stay on schedule?
I think day and it is probably will hate that, that that's like a philosophical point of emphasis
for him.
You know, we've heard good offenses don't get to third down, but I'm going to take it as like
this is his first time having to answer for a lackluster offense.
I'm not going to read too much into it.
Yeah, I'm not, I'm certainly not getting worked up about offensive.
performance in the preseason i didn't love that the first explanation was we got to stay on
schedule but yeah wasn't great yeah um do we need to uh you need to make a move here can i tell you
about the rest of shan mangan's press conference in overtime like a six out of 10
don't overtime mock me i training can't crush mogg you and then i overtime mocked you
we got a super chat to get to e j oh yeah let's do it from danilo carvalio
from Brazil.
Greetings from Brazil.
What are the chances
that Howie is going to trade
for a borderline starter
before this season
and if so,
at what position?
Good question, Danilo.
You know how he's got
that itchy tringer finger?
He's got the joint practices
coming up.
That means he's going to be smoking a lot
and he's going to be thinking,
oh,
what if I got myself
another tight end, man?
I don't know.
You know, he doesn't need
to practice with it.
joint is stays ready. I think I think tight end you know borderline starter would be you know if
they want to live in 12 personnel a guy who can even a little bit more in the passing game to
Johnny Munkan I think that's a possibility I would think it's more likely that you're thinking of like
a number three tight end and you're kind of viewing this as a red shirt year for Eli Stowers I think
that's a possibility and then in terms of starting caliber or borderline starter I mean I I do think
that safety is still a possibility.
I think that's more,
I could see him making a splash.
Like, I think if he's going to add a guy
who's definitely a starter and you're like,
oh man, how he does it again,
I think safety is where it happens.
And I think if it's more depth,
borderline starter guy who's going to play,
I think tight end is where I would look.
How about you?
I tend to agree.
I think they, I mean, they can't make a splash
at tight end because Goddard's there,
but I think tight end is like far away
the favor right now.
You know, I just, I was talking to somebody about it today.
Like if they lost, if Dallas got hurt and he's an injury prone player, you know, he's missed time, like four of the last five seasons, significant time before the last five seasons.
They don't have a good answer for what it's going to look like with that room.
You know, they, I mean, they're looking at Johnny Munt, who you wouldn't expect to have a big part in the past game and Eli Sowers, who you can't expect to have a big part in the run game.
Right now, I don't think Eli Sowers is a game day active, like the preseason opener.
didn't make me feel any better about him having a role as a second or a third tight end,
not to keep piling on here,
but just to acknowledge the fact that I think they have a hole there.
You know, they need a player who, when you're in 13,
you feel good about all three on the field as blockers.
And honestly, they need a player where if Dallas Goddard missed his time,
he can step in and be that combo guy.
The problem is it's probably hard to find that guy.
You know, it's not necessarily like, oh, yeah,
there's just a bunch of combo tight ends available on the trade market right now.
but, you know, assuming that like another Michael Mayer type shakes loose from a team
where maybe they'd be willing to move on from them, I think that's the one that makes the most sense.
I'm trying to think if there's anything else.
I mean, is there room, let's say the Grenard injury is something they're more worried about
than they're giving on, you know?
Is a Josh Sweat reunion, that kind of thing, a possibility?
Yeah, I mean, their entry group has been good, you know, like,
I think the bets that they made on Arnold McKady and AJ Up and Ness,
and they probably feel good about those two.
Yeah, if you're adding like a splashy name up top, but I don't know, I feel so good about
Jayek's Hunt too, but I wouldn't give up something significant for it.
Receiver, you know, you could talk me into receiver.
What about a splash at receiver?
I could see that.
I could still see that.
I wouldn't predict it, you know, maybe 13 turkeys or something like that.
But, yeah, I could see them saying, you know, Mikhailim had a slow start.
Dantavian Wix is a fun player
but we don't want to go under the season with him
as the second option in our receiving core.
Darius Cooper is a fun story
but another guy that you probably want to develop over time
the flashes can be more consistent.
I could see them making a move there.
That would be the one probably after Titan
I'd put receiver number two.
Okay.
I think that's probably it.
Right?
Yeah.
Shout out to Danilo.
Danilo Carvalio.
Is that it?
Carvalio.
Yeah, shout out to Nealio.
Shout out to Brazil.
Fantastic.
Shout out to Brazil.
Shout out ahead.
All right.
Anything else, E.J., before we get ready to drive on up to beautiful New England tomorrow.
It's going to be fun.
Jalen hurts two best throws in the day.
A dig route to Hollywood Brown.
Great timing on that route.
Obviously, those two have struggled with timing a few times,
but I thought that was really well placed from Jalen.
A slant route to Danny Gray that he threw with, like, real conviction.
And he, like, ripped it into a tight window.
So that was good to see.
And I agree with you on Tyler's team.
We heard from him after practice.
He said playing games has given him a lot of confidence.
You know, he said that's the big difference between last year and this year.
What's kind of improved him as a player is that he's just gotten a chance to settle in in the NFL.
He said when you play a stretch of games and you can get comfortable and work on the things you need to work on, that really makes a big difference.
And I agree.
He's looked really good this summer.
He actually tossed Jalen Carter once today.
Wow.
Like Jalen Carter ended up on the ground and it was Tyler's team to put him there.
So, you know, he's had a good summer against a good defensive tackle rotation.
Well, you know, that sounds so obvious, but it makes a lot of sense, right?
Like, before you have a full bank of reps and like what it's like to play in a game
and also at a position like offensive line, accept that you're going to have a couple bad snaps
until you have that, like every bad snap in training game is going to eat you alive mentally, right?
or you're going to put so much pressure on every rep because there are so few of those reps.
It's an important context to remember.
As we think about, you know, guys in the secondary, you know, a guy like Gushikin or Maximus Pully, right?
Like, yeah, you're not going to be perfect every practice, every game.
But like, once you have been through a game and been like, okay, it's not the end of the world.
I think it re contextualizes everything for you probably.
Yeah.
I mean, it's just like doing a podcast, right?
If you do a daily podcast, you got to flush it.
Got to go to the right in the next one.
Next day, if he didn't like your performance.
Remember what Jaylen?
You remember what Jalen said about flushing it a couple years ago?
You take a deuce.
You sit there and look at it.
When you take you a deuce, he said,
what do you do?
That's Southern Charm.
Take a look or flush it and move on?
I know what I'm doing.
Listen, you know, middle age.
They tell you you gotta take a look.
You got to take a look.
Yeah, Jaylen's not up on that yet.
He's not ready for that.
He's not ready for that.
He likes to pretend.
like he's an old soul.
He's not ready for that life yet.
He's not ready to start tracking his fiber intake every day.
You don't,
you don't know anything about that world.
Yeah, take a quick look, people.
You know, you've got to take care of yourself.
Just a quick look before you flush it.
Let that be a PSA from the P.HO.I. Eagles podcast.
Wow, overtime.
Did not know we were going there on overtime today.
I like to think about like the beat reporters who are still here,
who are doing their practice observations.
just hearing me talk about this up here.
Last thing for you before we get out of here,
Morrow Adjomo, we heard from him after practice.
He said, you know, that he felt like he was in there,
that it was wrong to get into a fight and practice on Thursday,
said that, you know, you talk to Nick about it,
talked to Howie about it, express remorse,
but also acknowledge the fact that like, it's football,
you know, this type of stuff happens.
It's just the reality is that we were there to see it,
so it became a bigger deal.
But, you know, he said, you know, him and Fred has talked.
So, and they went up against each other a couple of times in practice today.
No fireworks or anything like that.
So, yeah, just put in a bow.
Put a bow on that one.
Okay.
That's good to know.
And, yeah, save it for next, save it for Wednesday, Thursday.
Let's get some firepower with the Patriots, you know?
Yeah, a couple, a couple fun matchups.
Cam Juergens, someone asked them, like, what's it like going up against Milton
Williams?
And just goes like, yeah, it'll be good to see him.
Like, what's it like going up against middle way?
It's probably not fun.
You know, probably not something he wants to do.
All right.
E.J., thank you so much.
That'll do it for this episode of the P.H.O.I. Eagles podcast.
Thank you, Julian, for taking the helm today, back tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
Fran is in the driver's seat.
You might see the both of us again.
I don't know.
We'll see some special guest planned.
Got you covered.
We're going to be on the scene.
in New England, join practices.
Big week.
The biggest week of the preseason.
Thank you, EJ.
Let us know in the comments.
You know what?
I'm not going to go there.
But instead, let us know in the comments,
which lineback are you betting on long term?
Then we'll see you tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
Thanks for watching everybody.
As always, we love you.
