Hello everybody and welcome the PHLY Eagles podcast. I from the Xfinity Lounge and presented by Ashley. We have witness the first padded practice, true padded practice of camp. We are here to tell you all about it. We are E.J. Smith, Brand Duffy, and Bo Wolf. How are you guys doing? Oh, great. After that intro, I'm excited.

I have no idea who the crush is this year. I have like an inkling, but just an inkling, just based off of, you know, some context clues, but I'm doing great. I didn't think he was going to go in that direction today. Yeah? But when it happens, it happens. But you're going to have to wait to find out. You're going to wait to find out because we have news up front.

We're going to talk about what was a pretty sloppy day of practice. Now, there are some reasons behind that. But E.J., our Eagles in Saturday. You tell us what the scoop is, especially on the injury front. Yeah, the big news from today is that Devonte Smith and Mackay Lemon are sideline with hamstring injuries. So the Eagles offense looked significantly different. And oh, I should also mention, Lane Johnson is still absent from practice. It's been three practices now.

The Eagles are calling it a non-injury-related excused absence. I don't have any more information on why Lane has been missing. But again, very different look from the Eagles offense with those three players out. And, you know, again, the indication with Devante and Mackay Lemon is that these are not long-term things. But hamstrings are tricky injuries. It's early in training camp. you oftentimes will hear in training camp, like it's proxionary, it's not a big deal. Sometimes that's the case.

Sometimes that's not the case. So, yeah, again, something to monitor moving forward for sure. Yeah, I think we've got to spend some time on each of these things here. Yes. Let's talk Lemon first because he also had a hamstring injury in the spring. And, you know, he missed real time then. This is not great. A recurring hamstring injury?

Yeah. Right? It's not great. You'd rather, it didn't happen. especially given the fact that he had in the spring, like you said. I think that that's something that could be worrisome getting into the fall. And honestly, like moving forward, there are some guys where they are, because of the way their bodies are structured,

they are more prone to soft tissue injuries. And so that would be something to watch moving forward. A guy who is not overly relying on his speed in the first place, but also that means that he doesn't have a ton of like wiggle room in that. I don't know. he's got to get back in the field. Yes. Yeah.

And again, the recurring nature of it is worrying going into the season. Not to say he can't play an 18-game season without any issue, but, yeah, that one is eyebrow-raising, for sure. And how do you feel about the Devante one? Yeah, I mean. Not super worrying? He's had a hamstring issue. Hamstring issues in the past as well. And he's talked before, I remember, I think it was last year, hearing from him where he said, like, his hamstring injury got to a point where he was only going to make it worse by playing.

playing through it. So I guess it's a good thing he's going to take the time now. But again, like, you know, recurring hamstring injuries going into the season for each of your top two or three receivers in this offense is, it's not great. It's not ideal, you know? Yeah, I mean, there is the thing that you told us the other day, which was a good reminder about going through the guys who were injured at the beginning of camp last year and how many of those ended up really mattering over the course of the season.

He contrasts that with the thing that Lenin Dickerson said the other day that he shouldn't have come back in retrospect. pay you to be hurt early. And so they have to treat these guys with patience. I think Devante especially, like Devante honestly doesn't need to practice anymore. Yeah, it's fine. I don't think that will be the case, but he does not need to get on the field. Yeah, Mike L Lemon's got to get on the field. Yeah, I agree. Now, a quick note, both of those guys were out there, you know, walking around, which I think is not everything, but it is a little bit indicative of like the fact that neither of them are, you know, like supposed to be on the couch for an extended period of time. Um, so yeah, they're,

They're both present at practice, both there. Devante's got the headset. Devante goes towel over the head, like wrapped up. It almost looks like he's got like long hair. He kind of looks like a Valerian, actually, from House of the Dragon. And he'll do the headset over the top of it. It looks, I mean, it's hot out there today. It looked like a nice cool thing.

Yeah, yeah, right. I'd say it's like a soaked towel. Yeah. Do you think he's listening to the show with the headphones and our practice? Of course he is. Yeah. Yesterday's show, you think? Yeah.

Or do you think he's going like deep in the catalog? Look. Like an off-season, like a... He's going through Eagle 26 and wondering... Yeah. Where am I? Where the hell am I at? I think he's in the top eight.

Big. The Lane thing. Yeah. This is delicate because we don't know anything here. We don't have any reporting on it. Yeah. But knowing Lane's history, this is now like... I mean, it's four practices of six,

and that's like almost like six days. Yeah. It's been away from the team. for a non-injury thing, you hope he's okay. Yeah, that is first and foremost is you hope he's okay. You hope that things are okay with his family,

which is why, again, it's tough to talk about on the show. It's tough to talk about in general. You know, I think the only thing I would say is like, us not having anything to report is not from lack of asking. You know, I think that it's just,

you know, it's not necessarily other people's news to share maybe. So I don't really know, don't really know what it is. Yeah. Yeah. Not ideal. Yeah. The first thing you want to you, you hope that everything's good with him and good with his family. So, yeah, we just wait.

Pivoting to the on-field stuff. It was interesting that today they reversed. Markell Bell got the reps as the first team right tackle instead of Fred Johnson. So they're really giving both of those guys a shot. Yeah, and it's been a mixed bag, certainly going up against that defensive line. And we've talked about the issues they've had blocking Jalick's hunt, you know, Nolan Smith has had flashes. So, you know, it's been a little bit of a bumpy road over these last few days

without laying in the lineup. So that without having the two receivers. Yeah. And no lane today. And with yesterday being kind of like the review day, like, hey, this is everything we've done in camp thus far. I mean, today is a new set of installs. Right, exactly.

And usually, you know, and when I've read like these, like, you know, when you read, like, the playbooks and like install plans a lot of what happens is like cadences get put in first and like everything kind of builds off of that and maybe like the quarterback cadence at the line of scrimmage and like the get off like being out and there are like different classifications and like different speeds and tempos and things of that nature uh it was a sloppy day from that standpoint that's exactly right and if yeah if if if today part of the main focus was the cadence they got a lot of work to do yeah because there were a lot of flags yeah i i was trying to keep track in my notes when i went back through it. I couched it when I did my takeaway video for social. I said almost double digits.

It was in double digits for sure. Procedural false start. There was a stretch in practice at one point where like it was four or five straight plays where flags were thrown. And then the offense comes out. There's a false start. They go just line it back up. Like let's just go. Yeah. And then they couldn't get the snap off. And they just had to like it was like it was like a three second window where they're trying to get the snap off. Fine. It's like you know what? We just need to re-huddle. And you saw like Nick Siriani have a very visible, frustrated reaction. You know what? I was surprised he wasn't more upset.

I was thinking that just now. Yeah, I agree with that. It was almost like at some point, it rose to a level where a coach could have said, like, everybody bring it in for a minute. Yeah. We need to like talk about what's happening right now. Yeah. I was surprised.

And I wonder if that is him giving Mannion the grace of like, get her right. You know, he's installing this stuff. I can't be fully overstepping. But like, yeah, that's. I was, I'm going to ruin practice today. Yeah. And that's what I meant, you know, we've been talking about the offense a lot, obviously,

over the course of camp. And, you know, the flashes are really, really good, but that's why we say, like, when they get into the season, they get into games, they're not going to be firing on all cylinders early on. Like, they're going, there are going to be bumps in the road,

and you have to expect that. If you go in expecting them to look like a top three offense, top five offense out of the gate, you're crazy. Like, that would be extremely, extremely unlikely. So, yeah, they had a day like yesterday where it looked awesome and then you have a day like today where it was the opposite and I think that's to be expected. All right, why don't we hit on our players of the day here?

I go first. You got to go first. It lends itself to the conversation we're having. I went rogue again today. I gave it to the referees. Really the line judge in general. You're ruining this leaderboard. I'm not ruining anything. If you told me what was the defining thing of today's practice, it was a line judge. He was the busiest guy on the field.

I said that as a joke. number one. So you're stealing my joke. It wasn't your joke. You coined this? You coined this? You're wearing a hat. It makes it look like a ref hat. Black on the play? Is that what you're saying? Yeah. I'll let them be the judge.

The listeners, the sick girl's going to be the judge. No, Lindsay said, like, Bo's going to give you crap on the show. If you do that, I'm like, I don't care. I will either way. All right. All right. Well, great. Good insight. Really helpful. Yeah, really helpful to the people who want to be.

I know what's going on. I think it was practice. Thanks so much. It was, but because it was so sloppy, it was a hard day to pick a player of the day. Like, the defense did look good for stretches, and there was at least one offensive player we'll talk about. I thought had at least a decent stretch at one point in practice,

but it didn't feel like I didn't have a single player that I felt. It was a day where, we saw a lot of ones versus twos on both sides of the ball. And like we talked about last week, the twos on both sides did better than you would have wanted them to. Right. I thought. Who's yours?

My player of the day is a starter. Mine was a starter. On the defensive side of the ball. On the defensive side of the ball. My player of the day is Jahad Campbell. Okay. I'm glad you went Jahad Campbell because he was my,

I couldn't decide between Jihad Campbell and mine, so I'm glad we get to cover. This was not, you know, this was not like the world's best practice, but he was very active. Had, I think, two TFLs, and there was another play where, you know, he was coming in unblocked as a blitzer.

Dalyze it to Dantavian Wix, but it would have been either a sack or, and one would be flush from the pocket. You see the speed, the, the awareness seems to be in a good spot. I mean, he just, he looks like an elite athlete out there. And when he makes the right read, he is going to make the play. There was a play later in practice, and they had the pads on again today. And so, and honestly, this was mostly stuck coming forward.

Yes. It did get a little, little chippy today. It did. One little chippy moment between Drew McCubin and Tavian Wicks, where it, which lingered a bit, too. Yes. Which is good. I got some notes on that. I got all the chippy moments in practice for later.

Okay. The referees were in the jury, Jehahad. But yeah, there was a play where Seekwon Barkley put his foot in the ground, cut up field, right into Jehad Campbell. And Jehade Hamel, like, gave him a good violent flood. Like, it was like, that's what you want that to look like when Jehad Campbell's meeting Seekwan Barclay in the hole. Like, he showed some stopping power on that play. I was very close to saying Jehad Campbell for me. Okay.

I went with one of the guys that lines up directly in front of Jehad Campbell. I went with number 90, Jordan Davis. Yeah, he had a couple run stops, you know, quote unquote, where he wrapped up the running back was the first one to the ball carrier. And honestly, the defensive line in general today, it was because the past game, there were a lot of issues there. There weren't a ton of completions. A lot of what you saw was like, right, when they're trying to run the ball,

can they get anything going, they really couldn't. So I think when you look at the job of Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Morrow Jum, those guys did a really good job. And it's tough to say without like the film. I'm like, oh, who really stood out. But for me, 90 was the one who I found myself kind of writing down on the notebook more often. That's a good call out. I thought he had a very good day as well.

Day 5 of Training Camp is in the books the first day outside. the pads on. What did we learn? What did we see? What kind of depth chart movement was there? Where would you like to start, Fran? For me, let's do one-on-ones because we had our first look at one-on-ones today. That's always an exciting day. E.J. and I were over at the wide receiver dbs, and obviously a little bit of the air is taken out of the balloon with this one without Devante Smith and without Mackay Lemon. So, you know, a lot of these matchups were tilted in the defensive favor. But I thought there were some takeaways. You had some good battles between Quinyon Mitchell and Don Tavia and Wix.

Quinyon sat, he had the pick six yesterday in the bubble. So he sat on a slant route from Wix, bounced right off his chest. But he jumped the route. Or jumped the route while it was in great position. Off Q's chest, yeah. But he also blanketed him on a fade ball incomplete earlier, tightly contested hitch route on the first rep. So those guys had three good battles.

I thought Hollywood Brown had a couple of really nice catches against Reve Wollin, a couple of nice routes there. Elijah Moore, was he's a tough cover for Cooper to Jean. Interesting. Just because I think, you know, since Cooper's a bigger corner, he is, you know, against like the smaller, shiftier guys, he can struggle a little bit,

and that's kind of like Moore's calling card. So he got open on Cooper a couple times. Yeah, I tried to peek over a few times at the tight end safety one-on-ones. I think those, like, heavily favor the tight ends. Almost always. Yeah. It's very rare that a safety can make a play in that drill.

But I did, I saw at least one nice rep. Again, they were on the far field so I don't have like all of the notes on them. But I saw a nice rep from Eli Stowers. And I saw a nice rep from Dallas Goddard in quick succession over there. So yeah, it was one of those days where like they started with two v2 over at the offensive line. So I went over to the receivers to see what they were doing. And then I felt like I caught in no man's land a little bit. So got to do a better job next time that they want on once.

Okay. Got to be ready. Johnny Wilson, two reps really struggled to see. separate in both. First against Jonathan Jones. It was incomplete and then another against Jacorian Bennett. Ringo drew a flag from EJ's player of the day when he was matched up against Danny Gray. Probably my biggest takeaways there from down the depth chart there in the one-on-one. Prince Covey had a win. I did not. There was a rolled-up jersey though.

Did you have who Britt and Covey? Yeah, I've got you here. Okay. Yeah, because Britt and Covey had at least one nice rep in there, too. With my 18 pens that I got over here and there go three of them. You really loaded up on pens today. I mean, listen. Always have extras in the pocket. Respect the preparation. If one dries out, then you're screwed. Absolutely.

All right, so he beat MacMac Williams on the first one. Covey did. And then on the second, the other one I didn't, here's where I wrote. Covey, Shake versus MacMac Williams made up route. Covey's good at those where it's just like, it's like, that's not in a route you would actually run in a game. Like the one he posted on social media in the spring where he faked the hamstring pool.

So good. He didn't do that. That's obviously an extreme case, but... One of those Instagram routes? Yeah, a lot of it's like, all right, like you probably wouldn't run that in the game. Instagram routes, no tackling and practice. What happened to the game, I would.

O-line, D-line. Okay. Now they did the thing which I like, which is every rep you get two of. So you get a rematch. The problem with that is this was on the longest period. So we only got through one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight matchups. It started with AJ at Pinesse,

against Markell Bell, rushing from the left against Bell at right tackle. First rep, Epinessa spins inside for a win. Second rep, he goes for power, and Bell is able to sit down, which is pretty good. Yeah. It's good. Yeah. Second matchup was Jalen Carter against Tyler Steen. First rep, these were good reps from Tyler Steen.

First rep, Carter sort of swims wide, but not quite enough to get into the pocket. And then the second rep was just a good power sit from Steen again, held up against power. And you get Jurgens against Jordan David. A matchup with some history going back to their first training camp two good wins for Jerkins did a good job It was like a borderline hold on the second one but like the third effort from Jordan Davis this is these were good reps from Cam Jergens Dickerson didn't go so it was Drew Kendall going up against Ogemo first rep Ojimo pushes him right back right into the pocket good power move got under his under his pads

And he settled down for the second wrap so 50-50 no no one Smith against Fred Johnson then first rep Nolan absolutely puts Fred Johnson on skis, just pushes him right back into the pocket, which you wouldn't necessarily want him to be able to win with power against Fred. Did he sell speed first? I think he might have straight up straight. I think he did sell speed first. And then the second one is one where he gets inside,

but there's no, it's the equivalent of the Britain Covey. Got it. It's not a real pass rush. I'm going to save one of these matchups. The second one, we move on. Michael Jordan going up against Gabe Hall. Two good reps for Michael Jordan.

the goat, and then finally Byron Young with an easy win against Jake Majors. What? Jake Majors with a loss of one of VJ's

least favorite players. One of your least favorite players? Yeah, I'm not a Jake Majors guy. Well, actually, let's discuss this because Jake Majors, I thought, struggled again today at times. And I don't know if you noticed this,

but they were like half of the two's period. Didn't notice. We got to see Will Willie at center, and he looked so much better. Yeah. The pocket was so much cleaner with the Willie Lampkin at center. Going up against the ones.

I know. Like holding up against Jordan Davis. But here's the thing. And I get it because when you see when Willie Lampkin walks in front of you, you're like, there's no way I can play this guy ahead of this guy. But then you play. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. It's very difficult. And they pulled him out and they put me. So they're, they're workshopping that. They're in a place right now with the line because, Lane is down and Roberts and Morris are both injured. They don't have a full 15. They've only got 14.

So they're doing lots of moving guys around anyway. Yeah. But getting to see Willie Lincoln as the second team center for like five snaps today playing against the ones. I mean, I think he is better than Jake Major. Oh, I would rather see him.

The low bar. I just, my thing with Jake Major is he's just been getting beat every day of camp, like beat like a drum. I mean, it's been bad. And then he's like, I don't want to be mean. No,

I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just being honest. And then he's like feisty. Like he's out there talking crap. And it's like, oh, that's fine. Yeah,

you got to, you got to back it up at some point, you know? The thing to remember is that he is, while he is the second team center, he's like actually like their fourth center. Yeah. Because like if they,

when you get, you know, you get to the 53, you even get to the practice squad like, Dickerson and Kendall. Dickerson and Kendall are behind those. Yeah. So it's,

you know, he would never actually play. Him being a problem is not actually a problem. Yeah, but right now in training camp, they have a Jake Bejors problem. you brought it up i wasn't going to bring it up on the show i turned to fran at one point during practice i was like i've not been out on a player as much as i have been on jake major so far this early

in can take these reps it's fine yeah yeah okay uh where else would you like to go uh i had two notes when you were going through your offensive line like the one-on-ones yeah tough day for fred overall um the campbell sack he basically got his eyes outside okay and let campbell rush free from the inside and I just every time I had him in my notes it was just not yeah it was not a great a great look for him I mean I understand it's a hard it's hard for him probably to flip from one side of the other each day but still when he worked in with the ones it wasn't it wasn't pretty and when he was with the twos it was also not great what did you guys think of jalen hurts today um my big takeaway from hurts today was that without lemon and devonthe smith without lane johnson and also there was a lot of rotating

on the out like Jordan Mila didn't play a lot today. Right. So, yeah, he's missing a lot of guys. I do not envy you and anyone else that tries to chart, depth chart, rotations and stuff like that because today was like diabolics.

All kinds of mixing. Crazy. On both sides. Like offensive line combinations, secondary. There was a team drill early where it was like, okay, it's Macuba and Epps and then it's going to be Eps and Carter.

And then it's Carter and Macuba. Like it was just in there. Yeah. Rep or wrap after wrap. It kept changing. So, yeah, that was tough to charge. And this is interesting.

because Andy Dalton talked after practice today, both Dalton and McKee talked, and they're not even doing it by just session right now. They're doing it like in this drill, Dalton gets two reps and then McKee gets two reps. And Dalton was saying that, you know, it's a little bit of a fire drill, but it's actually probably good preparation for the role

in the regular season because you're just going to get thrown in there. Yeah. You can. The problem with that is, I mean, they're not getting as many of the reasons, reps as normal number two quarterback would get. Sure.

That's a fair point. Well, McKee worked in with the third team for most of the day, and then Cole Payton got development. So they did get more reps today. They changed that today. I was going to say, I felt like Tanner got most of the reps today at back. He started most of the second team groups. I think he got more reps today.

And today was probably his best day of camp so far. I think that's right, too. It was not an explosive day, but he completed a fair amount of passes. To answer your question, though, by takeaway from Hertz, much more aggressive down the field today. Again, I think part of that might be the fact that there was a new wave of installs. And so you had different concepts in. But the problem was that none of these deep shots hit.

Like I had two, these are just ones for I pulled to my notes after practice. He had a go ball to Hollywood Brown early on that Michael Carter tipped to himself going to the ground. Great interception by Michael Carter. But Hollywood Brown not there to be able to pull that in. another go ball of Hollywood Brown the Cooper regime was in coverage force and completion a deep out route that was like well downfield to Johnny Wilson incomplete

you had Elijah Moore deep skinny post overthrown no shot the killer was a the second day in a row where they've run the wheel route out of the back field to the running back spot yesterday was to Bigsby today it was to Will Shipley

wide open I mean schemed up perfect dead ass open yeah and Jalen put it on them over the shoulder good throw Just right through Shipley's hands. Right in the sand. It's just a killer. That was a painful drop.

That's one we're like, he's going to have our time sleeping tonight. Yeah, like, so open. The lack of Devante and Mackay Lemon, I think that kind of showed up a little bit just in that. They didn't get any of those big chunk plays down. Again, they're going up against the twos. So it is mitigated a little bit. Fair. And you would have hoped that they would do a little bit better.

Did you mention it a good tight window completion to Wix on Pugnan Mitchell? Yeah. That was a nice throw. But there was not a ton of great stuff from the starting off. We should say, too, on the interception, the one yesterday, like, I wouldn't put that on Hertz's record. It was some miscommunication. Today that one was on him. It was a bad ball.

It was inside and underthrown, which is, like, the one place you shouldn't put it when you're targeting somebody down the sideline. Yeah, I agree with that. I don't know what the situation was. It could have been. Sure. Yeah, sure. I will say, I've mentioned him a couple times, I think for what they need him to be, I think Hollywood Brown's gonna be fine as the wide receiver four.

Yeah, I like a Hollywood Brown. My problem is with Hollywood Brown, he's not running away from anybody. I think he's, like, who was in coverage on the Michael Carter play? Because it might have been like three Castro Fields. No, no, it wasn't, it wasn't fields. It was, it was double coverage.

Am I? Who was? No, I don't have it written out of mine. It was Ambrie Thomas. Not great? Yeah, but the ball's underthrown. I mean, that's a tepid argument. He's coming right at me.

He did not have a step. He can run, but... He's more quick than fast, maybe, at this point in his career. Well, that's the problem. Is that despite the time speed, he's never been that player in the NFL. He's always, he's a bit... He's, look at his yards per catch. They're within, like, point two of each other his entire career.

Yeah, but he's got good quickness at, like, off the line, I would say. He moves well. I mean, he doesn't have the top end speed, but I see where... I see where you're coming from. Yeah, like, I think he's... I think he's fine. The role that they need him to be, I think he'll be fine in that role.

Which is a lot. Low target volume, like, is more what you're doing to create space for others. And I think he can do that. Right, but so could Kwez Watkins.

Sure. But I think that, I think I'd rather have Hollywood at this point. Yeah. Sure. I mean, but. I thought I liked the Kweb in summer or whatever.

And Wix gets up and shoves McCuba.

And I thought we might get our first training camp fight at that moment. It definitely had boiled over, but it kind of fizzled out from there. Casey Kelsey was on hand today. I was just looking to see if he had a head of steam coming down. And then a few plays later, I mean, I guess you would give McCuba the PBU on that play. it was a pass to Don Tavian Wix in the end zone. Maccuba was at least there, broke it up. And he stands over Dontavian Wix and does the seatbelt celebration like right over him.

I turned to Fran. I was like, do you think he'd get a flag for that in the game? That's the only reason I didn't give the ref the player of the day is because you didn't give him a flag. Yeah, yeah. See, now we're talking about the game I love where you can do that type of stuff and not get flagged. But yeah, that was probably the most heated exchange. But two other small ones that I had, when shipwere, dropped the wheel route.

I think it was AJ and Vanessa. I don't know exactly what he said, but he said something to Shipley to the effect of like, you've been talking all day and then you just did that. And I'm surprised to hear that because like Will Shipley,

I didn't take him as a trash talker. And then the other one I had written down was that Jalen Carter had blown up a run play. I think it was against a second team offense and he gave them the finger wag. Yeah, that's right. And Seekwon, and I think it was Jalen Carter,

somebody. Seekwine got heated with somebody. Yeah, during team. And Jamal Singleton actually said that they needed to count down at that one. So it got feisty day. Yeah, it got a little feisty today. I love that. It was hot.

Those are the tough positions to try and judge off preseason, or off of training camp. Once we get into the preseason games, I would imagine McCuble will be a guy that will get some reps. But the way that he, Weiru then recovers and bends with so much speed was like, whoa. It was a true, holy smokes moment. And then at the end of practice,

yeah. He was wrecked. and stuff. Yes. Yeah. Against real NFL out linemen. Yes. Put the pads on.

Wiru was ready to go. I am, I am in on Josh Wierro. I dare to say, this is the most excited I've ever seen you about a camp crush. I don't think you've ever

had this much juice about one. Well, love is hard. Love is hard. Sometimes it makes you nervous. I feel like there have been ones where I've been pretty passionate about. But I mean, I think there's a guy could be playing on third down in two years.

We talked about him yesterday. He's got tools to work with for sure. I think there's something there. I like this pick. I'm in. Yeah. All right. You saw it, because it really,

I saw the one-in-rept. It's like, oh. Oh, who is that? My goodness. And then you came over right at the end of practice because what cemented it was the very end of practice. And you guys walk over and I've just got a giddy little schoolgirl smile on my face. My goodness.

I'm excited. Look, I'm right there with you. I don't think I've had a defensive end before. Well, just look at the list. I've had an edge. No, this is your first edge. Like I said, he's got length, he's got athleticism, the way that he battles in some of these drills that we've seen.

And I talked yesterday about drawing praise during an individual for some of like the blocking recognition stuff. You've got every right to be excited. The thing I like about this pick for you is this has been months in the making. You know, we've been doing our reporting on Joshua Wieroo. It's funny, I actually wrote about him yesterday. And if you guys, if longtime listeners will recall, we talked to Mark Dalgarian, who is the NFL International Scout.

And this is something he said about Joshua Weiru that I just, even looking back now, it's like, okay, you know, there was a little foreshadowing here. He said, since I've been with the International Player Pathway Program, when I got there in 2022, he probably had the best overall movement skills of any athlete that we've had. And he's just a really smart kid. He's so resourceful. He raved about Joshua Weiru and said, like, you know, don't let that guy be overshadowed by the U.R. Bernard story.

It's a great story. but Joshua Weiru has his own incredible story, rugby convert from Kenya. And yeah, I mean, he's popped. Like, he's got the speed, he's got the athleticism, the bend, and the length that gives him a little bit more of that power when he needs to, like the knockback upon contact. So, yeah, I love this pick for you.

He's not just speed. There's real power in there, too. It's at length, yeah. Yeah. How familiar are we with the rules on the pathway for player? protection program when it comes to both who he and who are. Because I think he might have to make the roster. Right.

There is some misconception about the pathway. Okay. You get that exemption for an extra roster spot only on the practice spot. Right. You can use your 17th practice squad spot on those guys. So crazy. There's 16th practice spots. But if you try to do that, another team can sign him onto their active roster.

So you don't get to just, he's still subject. to waivers. You don't get to just put him there. So if you want to make sure that this player doesn't get poached, this goes for Wiru or Uar Bernard. Yeah. They have to be on the 53-man roster. Now, you can get placed on injured reserve. I think that Uar is probably, like, he's further away. Yeah. And so I wouldn't be surprised if Uar, you know, suffers some injury and goes on injured reserve. But if you want to make sure that they are yours, it's either I are or the active 53-man roster. I'll be interested to because I'm curious if they're going to let those guys play in the preseason.

Right. Because they might want to not let them be on tape for teams to see. I could see them doing like the Awashika, like where they sabotage them in the preseason a little bit. Yeah, I was saying about right. Play him like in the fourth quarter. Yeah, out of position just to keep Wiru from being, you know, as good as he's looked at him. I mean, I'm not going to put him a defensive tackle or linebacker. Like if he's playing, he's going to play.

They could play him a linebacker. I mean, they could do that. Yeah, it's, it's, it's, O'R is an interesting one because he's, he's got such a tight-knit relationship with Clinton Hurt. Yeah, yeah. He still has to pass through waivers. Like another team can pick him up and there's nothing that UR could do about that.

But once he is on the practice squad, then it would be out that, like the other team would have to, you would have to, like, agree to sign somewhere. So if you think he can clear waivers, you can get him to the practice squad. If he's like, yeah, like, I want to stay here with Clint Hurt. Like that, that, that's, you know, my guy.

Like, you might feel okay about that, but he's still got clear waivers. Now, if he doesn't play in the preseason, no team is likely to pick him up without having the tape from the summer. Likely. Yeah, I'm about to say, my gut tells me that they just won't expose

either of those guys to waivers. I could be wrong, but I feel like IR stash or keeping at least one of them on the active roster. And Winston in the chat is right. If you're on IR, that's,

you cannot practice. Right. So you're losing a year of on-fields football development you can work on your body and there and you can do some stuff away from the facility but you cannot practice yeah if you if you had to pick one of them for an iR stash based off that is it wieroo like maybe you think like you change his body over the course of a year i don't know if he needs that yeah if they think that weiru could help them in any way vix going to want them in the preseason to play yeah yeah i never played before yeah so yeah i i would think that they will want to

The other thing with UR is, yeah, he needs a development, but if he's that far away, he's not going to get on the field in practice because it's not going to be helpful for the team to have him on the field. Yeah, you know what I mean? Right, right. Fun conversation for a couple weeks from now.

He's always with the second team. For the first time today, they did Routes on air in the beginning of practice and you had the tight ends, the ones, you know, four guys are the ones and Stowers was with that group today for the first time. It was Goddert, Munt, E.J. Jenkins, and Eli Stowers. So Calcutera and Latu got bumped over to the second field. Yeah. But I didn't sue Stowers involved at all.

No, but. He was there. Baby steps. Yeah. Okay. Johnny Munt. What did you learn from him? Yeah.

I found it interesting that he said he began his career as like more of a receiving tight end and had to grow into his role as a blocking tight end. And I thought it was noteworthy that he said that, you know, he's been, he didn't want to get into like what Eli Stowers is working on, but said that, you know, he's seen him do a good job working on kind of going through a similar transition. I know that Fran pointed out and I enjoyed that it was like the biggest scrum you'll ever around like the third dirty work tight end on the depth chart but you know a lot of hype around yeah my take there is I am I am pro access everybody should be speaking

let's let's let the journalists be involved here don't anyone should not be allowed to talk why he's your dirty work tight end I want him to I want him to have a Hannibal lector muzzle this guy needs to be you know portrayed as Come on. He isn't even able to speak. Oh, come on. But he's just kind of a rabid frothing at the mouth monster as a blocker. We need, you know, he needs to shave his head.

He said that how he talked to him about it beforehand and that if you're an athlete, you have to love competition. So it's not, I mean, what he's going to say at the podium, but basically said that he's open to the competition and accepting of it. But yeah, I think like this is a little unfair to Tanner

But like reading between the lines Like I think you could probably Figure out how he feels about it Yeah, I don't think I'm sure that they are they are both being very professional Yes I don't think either of them is super happy It's not ideal with the current situation

And I don't think it's like the most buddy buddy Competition you've seen Yeah because both of them probably feel like They should just be the young question second quarterback. You're Andy Dalton and you're coming in. It's like I have so much experience in the league and I know this offense.

Like why wouldn't I be the second? And if you're tearing you're like, I was the second last year and I did fine in that role and I worked, I earned that over years. Yeah. I totally understand. Neither of them are probably thrilled with the way that things stand right now.

Especially because Cole Payton looks so good so it's not like you can kind of like push him off to the side and just let one of them run the threes. Water gun to your belly button. Three quarterbacks on the 53 or four? I think three. I think they're going to trade McKee. I think they're going to trade one of them.

I think they'll trade Dalton. I don't understand what the point of trading for Dalton was. It was before you took Peyton. Yeah. It's true. You didn't know you're going to get Peyton. You didn't know if he was going to look good in camp? Right.

Yeah. I think if that happens, if it's Dalton, it's basically like Cole Payton impressed you enough to make Dalton expend it. if you can get something for him. I think you trade 10 or if there's like an injury somewhere else. But I think every, I think there are a lot of teams out there.

Like I look at like Green Bay. Where it's like, yeah, they would love to have Andy Dalton those number two quarterback. Yeah. But then why didn't those teams trade for him? Eagles jumped at first. How he's making those calls?

He's always on the phone. Always working the phones. I found the idea of a Dalton flip. I'm not quite getting them. there. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, I guess it's what they do with Flacco.

So he was a five-star guy at Alabama. A lot of people thought maybe like a first-round pick type early on in his career. Then he had knee injuries that popped up. Didn't quite move the same after that. Seeing him up close, he absolutely still looks apart, but he hasn't popped enough in practice. No, he made one nice play.

And this was in, he was running with the two, is his two zone two. And the next play, he kind of took the wrong gap and let the running back get outside. Yep. I was like, okay, I can't go there just yet. But I'm, I'm interested in Deontale Lawson. Chance Campbell catches my eye almost every day.

I'm like, I think there's something there. Yeah. He'd have to beat out smile. Like, that's, he's got to beat smile on. I mean, you could see five. That's not crazy. Especially if he's a special team's demon. Yeah, but he, that's the, he would have.

have to be that. So you're beating out Latu. Like, you'd have to beat out a bunch of those guys. And you'll hear my defense of Cam Latu in. Lindsay. Thanks. Why you always gotta be dragging Cam Latu into this? Say it like that's who we'd have to beat out. I'm curious about that though because Latu, Ringo,
