Hello, everybody, and welcome the P.H.O.I. Eagles podcast. A thunderous. Thursday afternoon. Bo Wolf, E.J. Smith, live from the X.F.F.F.F.F.E.L. and presented by Ashley Eagle's training camp day six is in the books. We're going to tell you everything that you need to know. We're going to update some of the camp battles where we feel like they stand. Are you doing E.J.?

I'm doing well. It feels like the thunderstruck song that we hear every practice. It feels like... I don't think we heard it today. We didn't, but it followed us here. And then we actually might have been thunderstruck moments ago, which was kind of scary. A little power surge. A little power surge. Energy surge. Homs out in the middle. Hopefully we make it through.

Yeah. By the way, I see a discussion in the chat about if it's immoral to like the video before we start. It's immoral to not like the video. I would say that it's a moral to not like the like back. I would say that it's a moral to not like the video.

Injury-wise, let's do the news. Then we'll get to our players of the day. Then we're going to get to some of the other notes from what was a relatively light. practice, probably the shortest practice of camp so far. Yep. And run game heavy. So not a ton to discuss, but we will tell you everything you need to know.

What are the big news headlines coming out of it? So the big ones for me were that Lane Johnson missed his fourth practice. Again, the designation that the Eagles have him on the injury report with is a non-injury related excused absence. I don't have much more information to share on that. It's something that we are monitoring. But yes, Lane Johnson was not at practice. and Landon Dickerson was given a rest day today.

And as a result, we saw Drew Kendall at left guard, and we saw Markell Bell at right tackle. And I don't know if you took notes on this. I thought they got 100% of their reps at those two respective spots. So big day for those guys. The other injury that I wanted to note is that Britton Covey was added to the injury report with the hamstring injury. So now they have three hamstring injuries among the receiving core

because Devonte Smith and Mackay Lemon both also out with hamstring injuries for a second practice. Yeah, I want to circle back to the last. the Mackay one. Yeah. Because I do think that if there was one that you should be concerned about, this is probably the one, only because the fact that he had it in the spring means that they definitely had a plan for how to have his hamstring ready for camp.

Yes. And how to maintain it. And all of that planning still was not able to stop him from having this recurring injury. Yes. The recurring nature of it. is what is concerning. You know, it's one of those things where maybe this is like Devante Smith in his rookie year where, you know, he missed time, I believe it was with a knee injury his rookie

season and during training camp. And he hit the ground running and was fine through the season. But there are also examples, especially with hamstrings where this is the type, these can be the types of things that linger throughout the season. The fact that it's already lingered from the spring into the summer for Mikai Levin, it's not ideal. So I agree with you. I think that's the one that if you're going to take some worry from the injuries,

report right now, I think that's the one that you're going to pinpoint and say, like, obviously the lane thing, notwithstanding, you have to put it to the side. Obviously, we are worried about that. We don't know anything about it. Right. But if you're looking specifically at like the actual injuries, I think that's the one that's like, eh, like, I think you should, we should, we should, you know, I think there's reason to wonder about what it's going to look like for. Okay. Any other big headlines in terms of takeaways from camp before we get into our players of the day? Um, no, I agree with you. your assessment, this was a run heavy practice, a quick practice,

feisty again, a little bit, a little bit of firewood. Yeah, it's starting to get a little chippy last, yesterday and today. Muggy out there. Yeah. Yeah. Well, this was interesting. You want to talk about Jalen's press conference? Yeah.

So the one that he did with us specifically, he mentioned that, you know, you find out who your team is and who your teammates are in the adversity. He said it's sticky. It's hot out here. You know, it's muggy. And when, when that weather turns in camp, you kind of, to figure out how did he say who's got that fight well it was very interesting because this was a this was a fun peek into jalen herts's psyche because earlier in the press conference he was asked

about like it seems like he's like having a little bit more fun this year and he said uh like i love football football is my passion this is this is this is what makes me happy but then at the end when he's talking about like you know it's all about going through adversity and seeing who's got it he said when it's when it's humid like this and we're out there you want to see who has the anger. Yeah. Who has the hate. The rage, the rage, the rage.

The rage. The rage. The rage. And then he goes in a good way. Yeah. But like for him, the love and the passion is hand in hand with what propels you on the field is anger. Yeah.

I don't like to constantly just go back to like the reporting that I've done on Jalen over the years. But how can I not? Like we're having this conversation and it makes me, it takes me back to a conversation I had with his dad two years ago. where he compared Jalen's like competitive nature to a fire and how it's always burning inside of him. And that that does kind of like link nicely to like this Jalen looking for other people who have that fire inside of them. Yeah. And who did he say had that fire inside of him?

Don Tavian Wicks. And we have seen that. Don Tantavian Wicks does have a little bit of a, he's got like my dad would always say like you need that nasty. You need like to have that edge to you. And yeah, Dantean Wix doesn't like to take anything from anyone. Best throw Jailen made today was two Duntaean Wix A little corner route where he had a sort of double pump

and there was just a very small window and he fired it into that window before Michael Carter was able to close and he was, you know, Wix was deeper than a Jonathan Jones zone really nice throw from Jalen on a day when there weren't a ton of interesting completions that was the throw of the day. And in large part for that reason

and because of another play, Lindsay, I made Jalen Hertz. my player of the day. Jalen hurts your player of the day. I made Jailen hurts my player of the day despite the fact that it was a very run heavy day. I think that speaks to the fact that with the run game, it's hard to really assess like, was that a four-yard gain? Was that a nine-yard game? Was that a 15-yard game? Like, unless they really break one, you're not going to get a great feel for it. And I thought that Jalen was efficient in the few attempts he had, talking with Elliot.

After practice, he said that this was the fewest he's had all camp. I think it was 10 passing attempts today. But again, he was efficient in the six that he had, or in the 10 that he had. I think he, you know, he had a couple of nice throws in there. The one to Don Tavian Wick stood out. He had a nice, it was a good ball to Darius Cooper in the back corner of the end zone. So another late in the progression throw. Yeah, it was, and you know what really stood out to me about that. And this is another reason why I wanted to just talk Jalen Hertz today and using my player of the day as a vehicle to do it. The footwork for that throw. How dare you once again, thumb your nose at the sanctity of the player of the day?

only use it as a vehicle to discuss something. How dare I use the player of the day on a podcast as a vehicle to discuss something noteworthy? First it's the refs. Now it's just something you want to talk about. I want the audience to know that you were saying this in Jess because they got really mad yesterday. It was like five minutes.

By the way, I got some support for my player of the day, the fun I've been having today. Somebody that we all know and love told me that they like the fun I've been having with the player of the day. Like, what's his name? The ref guy. The ref. Dean Blandino. Dean Blandino was like, yeah, great job tapping us up.

It's about time. Somebody appreciated our profession. Anyway. Gene Sterator has got you on speed dive. No, not that guy. Oh, Stereator's way better than Blandino. Oh, is Blondino the one? Blondino is the one who's the one who's the one who's like,

beside himself over the push of you. years ago. Anyway, so Jaylon's footwork on that throw, I thought, was noteworthy, because that has obviously been a big topic all offseason. And his footwork does look better and different to me this year than it has in years past. And on that throw, again, it was an incompletion, but a good ball. One that if Darius Cooper had caught it, it would have been a spectacular diving catch. But he got his hands on it, you know? I mean, he was like fully stretched out in the corner of the end zone on like a 45-yard throw. Right. And he got his hands on it. And then to the ground.

I'm not saying in any world, am I saying that's a drop? I just think it's like kind of good process, you know? And we'll talk more about that later, that specific play. But on Jalen's footwork, he goes right in the progression. Or no, he starts left in the progression. He goes right. So he's working across the field. And then he worked back to Darius Cooper.

So he had gone through each of his reads and said, I'm going to take the shot to the end zone. And I think that that's encouraging, you know? Like, I think, obviously you don't want to make a living out of being like that late in the progression and taking a shot. But again, I think that seeing Jalen kind of work through his progressions in camp and seeing his feet tied to that so clearly that I'm standing up on the top of like the bleachers and watch and practice, you know, I'm 80 yards away from him when he does this. And I can still see how tied his feet are to where he's looking in the progression. I thought that was encouraging. And then the other thing, the other reason I wanted to tap up Jalen for this is we saw him on his own reedkeeper.

might have been an RPO. Again, it's hard to tell sometime in practice, but, you know, a quarterback keeper. He ran up the sideline for a good chunk gain. And I want to see how much the RPO game is part of this offense, and I want to see how much the quarterback-inclusive run game can be part of it. And I think we've seen some encouraging signs the last few practices. There was also another play where he scrambled sort of on time, and it was a big play. And I don't remember seeing that earlier this summer.

I mean, for good reason. You want to go through the progression. That's what you want to practice. This is what practice is for. But in a regular season game, he made, like, the decision he made today is the decision you would want him to make. And it was probably like a 20-yard gain. Yeah.

Because he knew exactly where the defense was vacating. And there was an open lane. Yeah. It was nice to see, too. Yeah. And a scramble in that context, because they've been doing a lot of call-it periods over the last couple of practices, Jaylon's competitive. Like, I think I can live with a few of those.

You're right. It's practice. You want to see him give guys. a chance down field and go through the progression. But every once in a while, I mean, that's part of, that's part of practice too. There was a fun moment where it was the twos. I think it was McKee, but it might have been Dalton.

There was like a quick pass to Quez and, you know, it looked like it could have been a touchdown. Screen pass, yeah. A screen pass to Quez that, you know, might have been a tackle or not, but Quez sort of then jogs into the end zone and the ref didn't do anything. And so Jalen is

like on the sideline. He's like calling out to the rep. He's like, like, put the Signal up. Yeah. Get the signal up. And then the guy finally does it. And Jan's like, all right. Yeah.

I mean, that leans into, I think, you know, it's a competitive. It is, I think they, obviously all athletes are competitive. This has been a fun competitive camp, though. But a little more even than I think people would have expected, given how far along the defense is in their journey with Vic. And, you know, Vic had a very funny quote. Yeah. We won yesterday decisively, but, you know, that's what it's been like for two years.

That was like, that might be the quote of training camp. He was like, yeah, we don't. You know, we were ahead. We were very ahead yesterday, but, I mean, it's been two years like that. It's like, geez. You know, maybe Jalen was listening to the pod, or to the... Kevin Bajel is already dead. You don't need to kill him again.

It's been a while, you know, we've been ahead of those guys for quite some time. So yeah, Jalen hurts, my player of the day. Okay, I think that's okay. Oh, thank God. My player of the day is much less sexy. Okay, that's good. It's a player I mentioned. My player of the day is Drew Kendall.

Yeah. Just because I think it's a player. It's notable that he took all of those reps at left guard. And we will get to the Turkey's disparity here. He is the top interior offensive line backup. Yes. There's no doubt about that. And he also, I think, I was, you know, we heard during this season last year

that behind the scenes, Drew Kendall was impressing the guys. There was a lot of energy around him in the building in a way that, like, you know, there wasn't really around Ty Robinson or some of the guys who we hadn't got a chance to see on the field, but we're impressing. on the practice field and in the meeting rooms. Then we talked about it at the combine. Remember we came out of the combine? One of my big takeaways was,

oh, man, there's a lot of dreaded gas going on, right? And I was still curious about, is this guy guard capable, or is he just a center? And he does not look out of place at guard, especially next to Cam Juergens and in this offense.

Yes, exactly. I think there's reason to believe that, Eagles could be in good shape with him as the top interior backup. Yeah, I think that the scheme distinction is very important there. Maybe he's not an ideal Jeff Stoutland guard, maybe. But I think for this offense, you can feel good about him at guard. And, you know, I think if Cam Juergens were to miss time, you feel good about him at

center as well, because, you know, from what I've heard, he has a good handle on the calls and, you know, the types of checks that you have to make at that position. So, yeah, he has looked good this summer. He's looked good. I mean, did he have one-on-one reps yesterday? I don't think he did. I don't remember you mentioning him. Oh, no, he did.

He got the left guard reps instead of Dickerson. Okay. He got him against... Wasn't Carter. Morrow, maybe. Morrow? I think he did okay. Okay.

So there you go. I mean, he looked good in the preseason last year. Let's all remember. Like, he had some highlight moments where he's out in space and he's chasing guys down. If he can translate that to playing guard in this system, where it is more movement skills and more being able to kind of chase guys down. I think that he is an ideal fit. And you're right.

Like when I was looking through my position battles that we did before camp, like that was one of the biggest movements because of the fact that, I mean, he really has had the inside track as much as Michael Jordan. You know, I've ridden the Michael Jordan roller coaster, as you know. But yeah, I think that the Drew Kendall gas, it's been well-founded. All right. Before we get to break, people are spending their good money on Super Chats here. We don't want to make them wait.

Let's get right to it. Let's run through some of these super chats. Oh man, look at that. Rob Milner, who is emerging in heavy packages? Do we have a Darwish update? Darwish has not been involved in the heavy packages. Today we saw Stone Smart get a pass thrown his way for like the first time. And it was unfortunately a stone cold drop.

It was right on his hands. He seemed very surprised by it. That one is one where you just feel bad because, again, he's going to go to bed tonight. Just like I can't. The one play I got, I can't believe I dropped it. Yeah, tough. I think E.J. Jenkins. E.J. Jenkins has gotten a decent amount around with the ones,

more than you would expect. More than you would have expected. But in terms of, like, actually the starting offense, the heavy packages, it's Johnny Munt, and it's Grant Cacquatera. Yep. Which, we'll talk about it later. You know, that'll be a tease for when we go through the position battles. Dinklberg, of course, wants us to take stock of the Gush push.

And the Gush got actually did get more reps at safety today than he's gotten in the past. Some of them were next to Maximus Pulley with the threes. Has not really done anything to distinguish himself just yet, but a little bit of movement there. Yeah. Nate Berge seems like the D-line is getting slightly more pop than the last few years early in camp. Is that recency bias or does that seem true? I think that's fair. I don't know if I agree with that. I think it's fair to say the D-line has probably, I mean, we've been to through, we've been to six practices. I would say that the D-line is wrecked at least one to half practices. They had the one, I think it was day two or day three, they all bleed together now.

Yeah, when Jaylick's hunting, Jalen Carter basically wrecked practice. And then there was a stretch on day two where I also feel like those guys really muddied things up. Like two summers ago was a big defensive line? That tracks. I mean, it was a great front. And then a very good question from Kelly here, who says, with the concept of an ever-evolving league and in terms of offense, should it be slightly concerning that we are only adopting this type of scheme now? I think this is a really interesting, important question.

And I think if you are hopeful about this, because I think that that's right. There's a little bit of tail chasing going on from the Eagles perspective and we've been wanting to add this offense for a long time. I think what you can be hopeful about is that the Eagles are leaning on Sean Maniore,

and not the scheme itself and they think this guy is someone who can evolve with the league and has his own thoughts. I think this would be more of a concern if you were handing things over to Bobby Sloick or Rich Skangarillo or whoever. Someone else who has already

had a shot as a coordinator but is from this tree, that doesn't mean it's going to work out well necessarily and there could be something to the Eagles being at the tail end of this vanguard shift. You know, Vic talked about this a little bit today. Yeah. When he was asked about, you know, the idea that this offense is specifically designed

for his defense and how much nickel they played last year, he thinks there's probably going to be a bit of a, you know, a comeback this year, heavier packages, more like 12, 13 personnel. I think that's probably right. Yeah. But I think that the hope is that the Eagles think they have a guy who can develop his own offense and not just chase somebody else's. Yeah, because I would argue that unlike defense where you did kind of go from like that Seattle cover three to the Fangio influence to high shales. And it's like you kind of discarded a bunch of people from one tree and went to the other tree. I actually feel like with this offensive evolution.

And you tell me if I'm wrong, like, or if you disagree, I would say like the tree isn't so different. You know, you're not going from like, oh, we went from Shanahan's tree. to like Andy, back to Andy Reed's tree or something like that. You know, I feel like the evolution is happening kind of with who's on the cutting edge of this specific scheme. You know, it's like if you had somebody who came in here like, like, you know, Zach Robinson where it's like 11 heavy, like, you know, we're going to be an outside zone team.

You know, we're going to like make sure that we are like kind of married to the way that the Rams did it five years ago, then yeah, that would be concerning to me. But I don't know, like Ben Johnson has like, you know, a connection to. the McDaniel, Shanahan, McVeigh system still. So when I think of like where is offense headed right now, not like where would you, what would you copy if you were looking at McVe or Shanahan a few years ago,

I do think it's the heavy personnel packages in the wide zone that they are leaning into. And I think the distinction that Lane Johnson gave us where it's like it's wide zone early in the game and then it's duo late in the game when you tire a defense out and you want to beat them up, I think that that still is kind of like where the league is headed still.

It's not like you're trying to catch the wave you know, at the base of it, if that makes sense. And I also think if you believe in Sean Mannion, you know, even he doesn't know exactly what this offense is yet. I think there's a lot of poking and prodding and, you know, learning by doing that has to occur. So your hope for the offense is tied in faith in Sean Manion. Yeah.

We can have a conversation about, well, does that presage long-term success? If this guy's that good, is he going to get approached? but for this year, I think that's the hope. Yeah, I would just say that if you, if you, like, if you, maybe in 12 months, we're talking about a totally different offensive system that is now pushing the league forward. And it's like, man, like the Mannion thing,

like what he installed is kind of now getting phased out. Maybe we'd be having that conversation. It's hard to guess where the league's going to head. But from what Vic said, and really just from like looking at what the best offenses are doing, it does seem like it's going to be heavy person. and all packages and condensed sets for like the foreseeable future. And then it's like, okay, so if it's an air raid system or a West Coast system that takes

over from there, we'll have a different conversation. But I don't know, I don't think you, I feel, I feel like there's still far enough ahead on where the league's going with what mangrovementing. Stefan Diggs, do you care? Not particularly. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I agree with you. I'm mostly just... Yeah, how nice for them, yeah. I'm mostly just relieved that the Eagles

didn't get, like, heavily linked to him, and we would have had to discuss that. But... Yeah, never mind. Usually, I would go, oh, no, you got to say it. No, now you got to say it. I'm good. Whatever you were going to say,

let's leave it in the chamber. Let's talk about your specific notes from practice today. I think. Oh, sorry. I got a thrown by something in the chat. I'm going to start on the podium. Is that okay? Sure.

Instead of going through the plays. Yeah, of course. Jalen Hertz's word of the day today. It's calibration. Used it a few times. I did, yeah. Used it during his NFL network interview. I listened to it on my way.

over here. He said that he likes to think of the term calibrating. This is a time where they're putting... Calibrate good times. Come on. This is a time where they're putting all of this together and finding out who they are. It's been good to compete against a defense that is built and set an identity for who they are. And then obviously us on this end, we have a lot of new pieces and an entirely new approach and philosophy to our offense. Being able to put that together and make it our own, I am excited about where we are. So yeah, interesting for Jalen to kind of harp. on the fact that this is a feeling out process early in camp. And I think we've said it a bunch on the show.

I think they are further ahead of schedule given where they are in like the install process. And all the pieces they've been missing. Yeah, exactly. I think that they've had a lot of moving pieces and it's an entirely new scheme, as Jalen said. So I did find it interesting that, you know, this is Jalen's time to kind of get a message out.

He wants it to be clear like they are still going through the very early growing process in this scheme. Okay, makes sense. Second team offensive line today. Yeah, let's hear it. With Kendall working with the ones at left guard. So you got Fred Johnson left tackle. Jake Majors goes to left guard from center.

Willie Lampkin got all the reps today as the second and third team center. Is there a little bit light there? I thought the process was a little bit smoother with him there. Michael Jordan at right card, John Ojuquo at right tackle. In individual drills, it looked like Miles Hinton was maybe taking some some center reps. That did not happen during 7-on-7s or team drills, but I wonder if that's something that they are flirting with,

the possibility of. We should note that Jaden Roberts and Michael Morris, who both had been absent from practice, they were both back practicing today. Yeah. The second and third team offenses look better when Jake Majors is not at center. Yes.

I think that not to keep harping on Jake Majors, but I like a Willie Lamkin. I'm excited to see him in the games. Me too. I'm very excited to see him in the games. seven on seven is how things started to take again this was a short practice there were like two periods of competitive stuff going on but seven on sevens nice slant from jlin hertz to dallas goddard early on then tried a tight window throw to e jenkins this one was incomplete georian bennett and then had the past breakup uh what was so then next was the great corner throw to dantavian wicks really tight window as i said Michael Carter coming over late. And then another short completion to Dallas Goddard, which was a nice on-time one.

Yeah. And then a short pass to Tank Bigsby. So it was a good little initial session for the first team muffins. Even without the guys they were missing. Yeah, a lot of like in-rhythm, in-sequence throws from Jalen Hertz. Yeah, I feel like there was a good amount of throws to the running back in the flat today, too, which usually tells you that the secondary was doing a good job, you know, limiting airspace in the back end there. Those ones you want to judge on when they come out.

Yeah. Like if it's supposed to come out early and it's to that, that's good. If not, then it's, okay, the defense has won that rep. Yep. Then comes McKee. McKee got the first crack with the twos today, although Dalton would get a crack later. Had a completion to Darius Cooper,

but that one was kind of late in the down. I like the arm angle that he had on it, though. Yeah. They have like the pylon guys, the little wire, like, blockers or whatever, and I did make note of the arm angle. And they were doing ones versus twos on these. So this was the two. offense against the one defense.

Amory Torre targeted a couple times on incompletions, but it looked like maybe Jahad Campbell had a PI on one of them. Oh, that's interesting. You had Jahadahas on the PBA? Second one, yeah. Okay. I thought maybe. They didn't throw a flag.

Yeah, but I thought it looked clean. That was the one where he came up a little slow. It looked like he landed on his shoulder. He kind of scared him, but I mean, he seemed fine for the record. where they're supposed to be. They could injure someone on offense, injure someone on defense. Like they are very far away. He said, you guys need to stop like talking about those guys, essentially. But it's instructive how differently

they are handling the reps for Wiru and Bernard. Bernard never gets reps at all unless it's a developmental period. Wiru does. Yeah. And has gotten more reps lately. So I think there is a little bit of a difference at the moment between the two of them.

Absolutely. There's a disparate. I am wondering, like, if he gave Vic Truth Serum, I don't know. I'm genuinely, this is me wondering out loud, would he say, like, yeah, weir was looked okay? Like, is there anything to maybe he's like, he wants to slow play it? Or maybe he just generally dislikes, like, the developmental side of the IPP guys. Yeah, I don't think he thinks either guy can help the team right now.

Yes. And we aren't saying that they are. But, I mean, I don't. I got to tell you, having like James, James Newby, Powell Rylin last year, some of these late-day edge guys who they've brought in who just don't flash? Yes. I have, we have already seen more flashes of special potential talent from WERU

on a handful of rushes than we've seen from those guys. I totally agree. But yeah, I think that VIX evaluation that they need a lot of time It's still fair. It's still true. I don't think, I mean, you correct me if you feel differently. I don't think either of us are saying that, like, Joshua Weiru is going to be playing any meaningful football for the Eagles season. No.

I think it would be worthwhile to have him at practice for a year instead of stashing him on IR. But, yeah, I don't, I think that this is a long-term thing. I'm very curious to see what they do with him in the preseason. Yeah. Because if he doesn't play in the preseason, I don't think they really have to worry about him getting claimed. And you can just use the exemption on him.

but if he does flash in the preseason, I think they may have to put him on the 53. Yeah. Yeah, it's tricky. I think we, because we always overstate the potential for guys to get claimed. If he doesn't play in the preseason, but then he's just sitting there all season for anyone to pick up.

I don't know. I don't know. All right, looking through the rest of my notes here, not a ton else. Calcatera had a drop on a throw that was thrown a little bit behind him by Jalen. Yeah. Jeremiah Trotter had a good day again,

even though they're not actually tackling. Andy Dalton had a good throw to Johnny Wilson at one point. Quick note on Trotter. A little bit. Mangio said that he's having, I think he said it's the best camp he's had since he's been there. Yeah. I mean, he loves Jeremiah.

He said him and Macuba. Yeah. Both of them, you can tell that they are processing quicker. Yeah. That's about it. Yeah, we went through the deep shot to Darius. Cooper and the RPO. Dalton had a completion to Cooper and nice tight coverage.

Yeah. Quetz had the touch on the screen. Oh, one thing we should talk about, developmental period. So the first part of camp, Col Payton would take the reps with the threes. And Dalton and McKee would switch off with the twos. Today, it was one of them with the twos and the other, Dalton or McKee with the threes. So Col Payton didn't take a single rep. Yeah.

All practice long until. the end of practice developmental period. And boy, was he champing at the bit. First snap, forces it into quadruple coverage. Yes. Tipped in the air, picked off by Tari Castro Field. That man loves, there's no window small enough for Cole Payton to not throw the ball.

I love how you spun this into a positive. It wasn't his best day. I did make note, though. He had a nice throw later, though. Yeah, Cole Payton was out there for like at least a half hour after practice going through, you know, reps, working on some under center play action movement. So yeah, I am not as bullish on Cole Payton as you,

but I do think he looks better than you would expect a day three developmental quarterback to look. Yeah, it was a nice deep cross that he threw to, I believe, Eric is Ukanma. Now, the pick was not intended for Eli Stowers, was it? No, but there was a matchup. The final play of practice was Eli Stowers. It looked like singled up on Tari Castro Fields. Yeah. And he was a slant and Casscha Fields was all over it.

Yeah. I don't know what to say about Eli Stowers anymore. I don't want this to turn into like a pile on. He is a developmental player. Like when they drafted him, it was clearly with a long view in mind. So there's every chance that he still develops into what they've envisioned for him. I just think that, you know, especially we'll talk about the tight end position battle. Like, I think it's going to take some time at the very least.

Well, it's part of the conversation with Mackay Lemon because there's a real chance now where this whole rookie class is long term. Yeah. Is, you know, Mackay has to work through hamstring and you take what you can get from him when he's healthy. Eli Stowers is for next year. Markell Bell is for next year.

Paul Payton is a long-term developmental prospect. All of these guys, there may not be the same high-level impact the rookie class, the Eagles have gotten in recent seasons, although last year was not the most impactful either. Right. And that's okay with like the long term team building philosophy that led them to go offense heavy. But if you think about it, like the way that the defense became such an elite group is because those guys contributed like, you know, Quinnian Mitchell and Cooper DeGine contributed early in their career. So, um, I mean, I think with Lemon, if you don't get like

solid production year one, it's a little bit of a disappointment. you know, not to say that it's his fault or it's a reflection of development. It might just be injury related. With Stowers, I think that you probably knew it was going to be a long-term thing. But, I mean, going into training camp

or even going into the spring, not even like using a straw man, like people were saying this. Like, I think that it was within the realm of possibility that Stowers was at least like a matchup hunting type player. You get on the field in high leverage downs. Like, you know, we had, we mentioned,

the Arnold Abaceti rep where he couldn't beat him on a slant route during Monday's practice. And, you know, this one against Tariq Castro Fields, he's not going to be like a matchup guy for them early in his career. Yeah. Early in his rookie season, I should say. I think that's right. Yeah. I don't know.

I don't want to pile on. I feel bad. No, there's still reason to it. It doesn't really change the long-term outlook, but there's no doubt that it has been a slight disappointment for what you would like to see from a second round player. Yeah. Now watch. He might have an awesome second half of camp.

He might have an awesome preseason game and everyone's going to be like you guys were killing Stowers. That's fine. We are not saying that that's not possible. But he's not even repping with the ones. Yeah. So it's the team is being patient with it. Yes. All right.

for uncertainty about what the quarterback room is going to look like post-training camp. I'm going, I'm going to go 50, McKee. This is the only one I'm doing on vibes for the record, so they'll go a lot quicker after this. Going 40 McKee, 40 Dalton, and I'm giving 20 to the field. Really? Yeah.

Okay. I just, I think something has to give at this point with the Eagles quarterback room. I think it's more likely than not that one of the two guys that's here will be the second quarterback in, by the time we get to the regular season. I don't know who it's going to be at this point. Not because I think like there's a chance that Andy Dalton beats Tanner McKee for the job.

I think there's a chance that one of them gets traded. I think there is a chance that Andy Dalton beats Tanner McKee for the job. I think Annie Dalton has had a much better summer than he had spring. He's looked good, but... I wouldn't say that he's looked good. I think he's looked a lot better. He's had a couple good sessions. There's still, I mean, you know, there's no downfield completions.

Yeah. And also like, shouldn't we be grading him on a curve because he's more comfortable in the scheme than, any of the other quarterbacks? You would think so? Yeah, so, I don't know. But I think he has probably minutely outplayed Tanner McKee this summer,

whereas I thought McKee looked much better in the spring. Yeah. I have reversed here. I've got 75 turkeys on Andy Dalton. Really? 25 on Tanner McKee. That's, it's a little bit vibesy. Yeah.

I just, I continue to think that they brought him here for a reason, and I think there's a real chance that McKee's going to get. I'm not happy about it. it, but I think you're underselling the chance that it's Dalton that gets flipped. I think I am underselling that. I don't think they're going to do that. Yeah, I think there's a chance. I think there's a real chance that Howe's up there on the podium explaining that they didn't expect, they didn't know if they draft the quarterback, they drafted

Cole Payton, he looked good in training camp, that made them comfortable trading Andy Dalton. And honestly, getting an offseason of Andy Dalton helping Jalen learn this offense. I think that they could spend that fine. So I think it's more 50-50 on who gets traded. They may not worry about this, but I, and they did what they did with Flacco. That was the same area. I think in the repeated game of, like, how do you treat players?

The idea of trading for this 37-year-old Andy Dalton making him move his family. Now, maybe they have not moved. Yeah. And then trading him again, it could be, maybe it's not against his wishes, Maybe it's, he loses the battle and you send him somewhere else where he can be the backup. But I wonder if they would be willing to do that, uprooting him twice. It's interesting, but I think, you know, it's the business.

Also, like, I don't know. This is really me, like, projecting something on to both of those guys yesterday. I didn't get the sense that either. Those guys, like, love the situation that they find themselves in. Oh, I agree with you. Yeah. I usually don't like to do stuff like this. I agree with you.

You know, like, I take their answers for what they are. but I don't think that you, I don't think they seem enthralled with the way that things have gone. I think you're probably right about that. Yeah. All right, Lindsay, what did Fran give you for the backup quarterbacks? Fran said Tanner McKee 80 turkeys and Andy Dalton 20.

Wow. And then he gave me a little like quote explanation for each. Okay. That's very, oh wow, a lot of work from Fran. He said, I just think this is the,

is it Occam's Razor? Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor, yeah. Occam's Razor outcome with all the evidence over the last three years. on both pliers. Okay. This is fun. So, like, it's like a sliding scale.

I have none on Elijah Mitchell. Yeah, he hasn't shown that much. And 20 on the field. I probably should have more than zero turkeys on him. Damien Pierce has had a good camp.

I like it Damian Pierce. I like a Damian Pierce too. I would venture to say that he has outplayed Will Shipley. Yeah. Camp does far, but Shipley has special teams value. He's also on a rookie contract.

Yeah. Pierce, you can probably get to the practice squad. I think everything is still under the hood leaning in Shipley's direction. Yeah. But I don't know that Shipley has, you know, or a fourth year player.

Is it his third year? His third year? Him and Trot came in the same year. I think it's third. Yes, third season. Yeah. I don't think that he's shown what you would want to have seen from a third year fourth round pick.

Yeah, him dropping that wheel route yesterday. Oh, it was brutal. It's like that's got to haunt him for a long time. All right, Lindsay. You want to have the Fran reveal on running back three. Running back three. Will Shipley 60,

Damien Pierce 30, Elijah Mitchell zero, the field 10. And then his little explanation, until I see the rotation change in practice or see a guy stand out in preseason, it's tough to envision Shipley off this spot, especially given his role on special teams.

Michael Lemon is number two or two or three in some order. So we've got Hollywood Brown, Elijah Moore, Darius Cooper, Johnny Wilson, and the field. Keeping in mind, Jalen Hertz's, Darius Cooper comments today. Yeah, I got those already for you. Oh, let's hear it. All right. So Jalen Hertz, this was on the NFL network broadcast with Friend of Cuzz's show, friend of ours, Mike Garifolo.

Oh, yeah. Friend of Lindsay's. Friend of Lindsay's, yes. I mean, just an overall good guy. He had a cameo on Cousa Show this morning. I walked by him, and I flashed him up there for a minute. You flashed him. I did not flash him.

I flashed him up there. So Jalen on, this is what's noteworthy about this is the question was about the number two receiver. The question was about, you know, everyone knows that Devante's, you know, a great player, but how of the guys outside of Devante looked? Who's going to be the number two? And Darius Cooper was not part of the question. But Jalen Hertz came right out and said, I think Darius Cooper has done a really good job.

I think Darius Cooper has done a really good job. He's always been a big body, physical, strong-hands guy. But just to see how he's transitioned going into year two, definitely excited for him along with the rest of them. So, I think he was a good player. Very high praise for Darius Cooper. And that, going back to the play that I described during my Jalen Hertz play of the day, like the fact that Jalen goes through his entire progression

and then says, F it, Darius Cooper's down there somewhere. Yeah. Like, that is significant. that matters. You know, that is, as much as we've seen, Jalen not developed trust with receivers in the past, the fact that he is developing trust with Darius Cooper, but he didn't come down with the catch,

but I think it's like a process versus results thing. And like what it tells you, the greater context there, I think that Darius Cooper has like, he's earning some role on this team right now. We'll see if it continues, but I think the fact that Jalen brought him up in that conversation speaks as much as like what we've seen from Jalen, you know,

trusting him on the field. So we both had Hollywood Brown pretty heavily the favorite here before camp. By the receiver 4, right? You had 70. How do you have it now? I've got Brown 50. I've got Cooper 40. I have Johnny Wilson was 6 and 4 for the field.

Okay. And none for Elijah Moore. Yeah, I think Elijah Moore is probably, I know he's been productive in camp. I think he's probably like your fifth or sixth receiver. I'm with you. I had 40 on Hollywood Brown. 30 on Darius Cooper, 20 on the field, 10 on Elijah Moore, and zero on Johnny Wilson. But I think it's, I think there's a real chance that Darius Cooper could steal this job.

Yeah, I agree. So I did wide receiver 2 as well. Let me give it to you really quick before we hear from Fran. Before I had 60 on Mackay 11, 19 on Wix, 14 Hollywood Brown, 7 for the field. I dropped down to 40 for McKaylemon because he's going to miss so much time. I think Wix. I have 35 on Wix. And I have 15 on the field and 10 for Hollywood Brown.

I've got 15 on the field because I think that there's a chance that Darius Cooper just has a, like, meteoric rise, like, you know, like jumps over everybody, you know. They can't discount it. Maybe he, maybe you can do it. We would have to throw a parade with BLG. Let's get Darius Cooper. Shout out BLG. We get the Darius Cooper show on this network.

And if it looks better this year with their urgency to the line,

it is definitely something that's front of mind for them. I can't tell you if, I mean, we don't have play clocks at practice, but I think it is definitely a priority for them to get to the line more quickly, and there's less for them to sort out pre-snap. And that was something that Jalen was asked about today, and he said, like, it's a loaded,

that's a loaded question, or, you know, that could be a loaded topic or something like that, and it was very careful on how he answered the question. Yes. Yeah, that's the thing worth, paying attention to in the preseason. Yeah, absolutely.

I have 80 on Johnny Munt. I've got 10 on the field. Could they add someone? Could they add Zach Ertz, who is reportedly healthy and looking for a new team? more realistically though I think that they could use another combo tight end. They could use a tight end that if Dallas Goddard's missing

time, you feel really good about them contributing heavily in the past game while also being a factor in the run game. You don't really have that. In Eli Stowers or Grant Calcutera, if you had seen more from Eli Stowers, maybe you would feel like, okay, like if Dallas Goddard gets hurt,

at least we have someone we can feature in the past game and he can be almost like a handcuff with Johnny Munt where it's like Every time that they're on, he's on the field, we're going to go with 12 personnel more often than not, and we're going to have Johnny Munt as part of the run game there. But I just, I worry about the lack of multidimensionality with this offense if Dallas Goddard gets injured. And for that reason, I gave a little bit extras in the field. And then for bookkeeping purposes, what did you do with your last 10-30s?

I gave five to Stowers and five for Grant Calcutera. Yeah. I also have five on both of them, and I just had 90 on month because we didn't include the field in the options for this one. I added the field. You just added that on yourself. That's a different question, different category, you know. Why are you acting like I didn't mention this before the show? I'm just saying, well, because Fran didn't have that opportunity. Fran didn't have the chance. You did for the record. No, I'd already done my work. I'd already filled it out. That's fair. I went 90 months and five on the other two. But I do think that this is a spot where

they could add somebody. Yeah, I agree. I think that this is one of the two or three spots where it would not surprise me to see them make a notable edition. I'm calling it. Ely Ringo created for a Shanahan McVeigh system number three tight end? Or, you know, they could just promote Kam Latzu if they're going to do that. What do we have from Fran? Obviously there's a big question on what he looks like after the injury, but I still feel like a combo tight end is what I would want in that second spot. He got tossed by Jalen Carter, but that's going to happen. That's going to happen of almost anyone. And, you know, when he's there in my notebook, it's usually just be saying, oh, he's in with the twos again today. Or he's in with the starters again today. So he's had a good camp. He's an intriguing young player, as I said when we talked about this before. Lindsay, what do we have from Fran? Fred Johnson, D. Turkey's Markell Bell 60.

And he says, the fact that they were so quick to throw Bell in with the ones is a good signal, I think, to their belief in him. All things equal. If their performance would be similar, I think the offensive staff would lead towards the rookie. If this were Vick's show, he'd lead towards the vet. It's crazy to think, but not impossible. And I want to make sure I say that, like, this has nothing to do with, like, Lane's current situation. just like Lane's physical, like, track record over the last few years.

Like, Markell Bell has a chance. There's a non-zero chance that he is, like, the most important rookie on the team this year. Yes. Like, McKay Lemon is still the more likely of the three. Yeah. But he is, Markle Bell is now number two at the very least, and there's a chance he's the most important one. Again, not acknowledging, like, what's going on with Lane now, I want to say just like Lane's health over the last few years.

Top interior offensive line backup. I feel like this is pretty chalk. I already have 100 on Drew Kendall. You know what? Screw it. 100 on Drew Kendall. What did you have written down? I was going to do 85, 10, and 5.

Why? What am I hedging for? You know, I'll give, okay, the final answer, 99 on Drew Kendall and one on the field. Maybe they'll add somebody. But Drew Kendall has looked good. He's earned it. I'm in on Drew Kendall.

Oh, God, I'm sorry. Time to flip sides of the ball. DT4, where the Eagles have the best top three rotation of defensive tackles in the league, but they are searching for a number four. Ty Robinson has not really delivered on the promise they were hoping for when they used to fourth round pick on him last year. Byron Young had this job last year.

It was okay. Gabe Hall is involved. Take one Graham can't stay healthy. Zion Wilson. And the field. Some of those other guys are not included in the turkey disparity here. I have 78 on Byron Young 20 on the field

and two on Ty Robinson I'm still hedging a good amount on this one I've got 55 for Byron Young it's up 10 from when we did it a week a couple weeks ago we got 25 on the field could they add somebody that fits the very specific role

they have in mind for this player I went I had 18 on Ty Robinson before I've got 15 on him now that's mostly down to the fact that the only thing the only case he has is his draft pedigree and that hasn't changed but he has not looked good in training camp. He just hasn't made much of an impact.

No. And he's kind of buried right now. He takes a bunch of reps in the developmental periods. So you have five on Gabe Hall? I've got five on Gabe Hall. Nice. Lindsay, how many turkeys does Fran have on Gabe Hall? On Gabe Hall, five.

On Byron Young, 85. Ty Robinson, five, and the field five. He says, this is EY's job to lose. He's low on the field. He's going to regret being low on the field, I think. Gernard, Jalick, Nolan Smith. This is between Arnold Ebikati and AJ Epinessa. Before camp, we were both heavily towards Ebikati. I'm not so sure that I think there's much difference

between the two of them right now. How about you? I agree. I had 70 on Ebikati before and 25 on Epinessa. I gave a little bit of space to the other guys, the field, and then Kishon James Newby. I just moved ever so slightly. I gave Ebokati 69 and Epinessa 31.

You had the whole show to build up to them. And you still went with, I gave Arnold Evacati 69. My mind that you should have said was Arnold Ebikati and I gave each other 60. No, we did not. We did not. That's how that works.

That's the whole point. I was thinking about Eiffel Stowers earlier today. Oh, man, my mind doesn't go there. I mean, I know I gave him 69, but I promise you. I'm going to keep saying it because my mind doesn't go there. I promise you it was in spirit of the exercise. Because I think AJ Epinessa has looked a little bit better than I expected him to. Yeah.

I think he could very much earn a role on this team, but Arnold Epicady has had a good camp. Vic Fangio even said it. And when Vic says it, you know it's real. You know it's real, you know it's true. I think they both have been really good. I think the Eagles can feel good about both of those guys. Yeah, I think they both looked pretty good. Yeah.

I have it, I have it 42, Ebikati, 41, Epinessa. 17 on the field just in case there's somebody that they add. But I think right now both of those guys would make the team. I agree. I think both of them should be on the team. I mean, Eponessa, maybe you feel like nobody's going to claim him. You can sneak him onto the practice squad. So what I would say is he's going to contribute.

How Ojolari. Oh, yeah. Ogbo Okoronko looked last year. These guys have both looked better than that. Absolutely. Yeah, they look like Romulant. Eddruschers. The word of the day.

No, I did. 92 for Campbell, eight for Trotter Jr. Non-zero chance that Jeremiah Trotter-Jinger starts for the Eagles this year. I think someone suffers an injury, yeah. Yeah. Non-zero chance that he just wins the job.

Non-zero, not likely at all. Not even very possible, but non-zero. I think injuries aside, I would say zero. I would say he has been very good. 2%. Yeah, Jehaz look good. Okay. So is Jeremiah Trotter-Jinger.

Green of salt when evaluating linebackers from the sideline and team drills during training camp, but he has not looked bad at all. I get that Trot is as good as ever, but they have to have Jihad take those reps. I agree with that evaluation.

Yeah. Backup Nickel, and this is a slightly interesting one we're talking about because Vic Fangio did discuss Michael Carter the second today and said he has had a good camp so far. He has sort of proven that Vic can trust him to do a few different things. He's a worthwhile backup nickel. also obviously competing at safety. So a little bit of gas behind Michael Carter the second. You've also got Jonathan Jones,

Mack, McWilliams, and the field involved here. How did you spread your turkeys? I gave 80 to Michael Carter up from 65 before, 18 for Mac and two for Jonathan Jones. I have been saying this for months now that they really like Michael Carter. Like they think he is like a versatile and talented player. He might not be a starter for this team,

but yeah, I think that he is the backup nickel. and I don't think the safety position, I mean, I guess I don't want to spoil anything, but I don't think the safety position is closed yet. I think he could still fight his way into that, especially if they find a use for, like, a versatile safety where they can kind of mirror things with Cooper to Gene and him.

I think that there's some fun, fun ideas there. I'm with you. I have 75 on Michael Carter, also 18 on Jonathan Jones, seven on Mac and none on the field. I think they feel pretty good about their secondary depth. I agree, yeah. It's a good group.

Fran has 60 on Michael Carter the second, 20 on Jonathan Jones, 20 on Mack, McWilliams, and zero on the field, and says, this is a fun one. The reason why I think it's Carter is that he's the biggest lock to make the team of the three guys. I don't think there's a guy not on the team who would step into such a pivotal role in Vicks defense. I think Jones slash Mack will be a good battle for a spot on the 53, but with them fighting for likely one job, I have to give the significant nod to MC2. All said. All right. Once again, we close with the only open starting spot on the roster. That is safety.

Marcus Epps, Michael Carter the second, and the field. Before camp, we both made Marcus Epps the favorite. But you gave him 60 turkeys. I only gave him 40. I had more space for the field. I once again have Marcus Epps as the favorite. I've moved it up a little bit. I have him at 48.

Michael Carter at 31 and the field at 21. How about you, EJ? I'm going to remain unmoved. I'm going to have EPS 60, Carter, 25, 15 for the field. Oh, interesting. Yeah. I think that the competition has gone how we would have expected. Maybe a little bit more favorably for Marcus Epps than we would have expected.

If I had to change something, I'd take maybe five off the field and give it to Epps. Like, I'm a little less convinced that they need to make a move there, which is probably a reflection of Andrew McCuba, as much as it is Marcus Epps. I think that this part of the competition has gone well in that both of these guys have looked pretty good. They've looked to not be problems. Exactly. I think Marcus Epps has actually looked pretty good. Yeah. For instance, like there was a slight difference where the completion to Dantavian Wicks today,

Michael Carter is coming over and he doesn't quite get there on time. Whereas the deep play to Darius Cooper, Marcus Epps did get there and helped break up that pass. Now it's a little bit further down field. It was a little bit further to come. I think that Marcus Epps, like as long as he stays healthy, they would not have a huge issue with him being out. Yeah, if they had to use like real draft capital to get like a good second tight end

or, you know, if they wanted to add a receiver or a defensive tackle, I think you could feel good about that and like feel good about the fact that you, it takes you out of the safety market, like the deep end of the safety market, you feel okay about it because these guys have looked competent. I think so too.

Finally, Fran. Fran said 60 turkeys for Marcus Epps, 30 for Michael Carter 2, and 10 for the field. He said, obviously, can't rule out a trade. I just don't know that it's completely necessary. If it's just Epps versus Carter, I feel strongly that it's Eps. I'd go 70, 30 split there in his favor at this point. But I'll leave the light on for a trade leader this month if someone looks to shake loose. Makes sense.
