Welcome in everybody to an emergency edition of the PHLI Eagles podcast.
We are live from the Xfinity Mobile Studio and have some really interesting Eagles news to unpack here.
The Eagles are, I'm just going to get right to it.
The Eagles are trading Cam Juergens to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2028 second round pick and a 2027 fifth round pick.
They are also sending a 2027th round pick back to the Baltimore Ravens here.
a surprising trade, one that really sends shockwaves over the offensive line that had already been
in flux so far the season. Fram, what was your initial reaction when you saw this trade come down?
So initially just shocked that Cam Juergens is on the way out, just knowing the contract, right,
that they were kind of linked to him for the next couple of years. But then seeing that's the second
round pick coming back, great value, given the fact that, you know, Cam has not played his best
football and has been, albeit playing out a position.
playing left guard coming off the injury it wasn't a great week one then they moved in left
right i think things just kind of compounded but um yeah i mean to me like the initial shock was
whoa cam got traded and then the second one was whoa they got a second round pickback so um yeah
a lot to unpack there yeah i mean the compensation definitely surprised me i think it'll surprise a lot
of people who have seen camp play this season obviously you know it's a center deficient league the ravens
have a need there i do find some irony in them trying to fix
an injury crisis with Cam Juergens at this point. But I also think it's like as we talk about
Cam and obviously I got to hop off of here in a couple minutes for an availability. So I'm just going to
kind of like dump all my thoughts before I get out of here. You know, I think as we talk about Cam Juergens
on the way out, I think it's only fair to acknowledge the fact that he has not been the same
player since the 2024 season when he made a great sacrifice for this team. You know, he played through
significant injury and he has not been the same since that. And I think that that sacrifice
should not be, you know, overlooked.
Obviously, fans will be happy to see him, you know, traded for good compensation and then
the chance for the Eagles to reset because of him being sort of a punching bag by the,
by the point by this point in this season.
But I do think that, you know, it's only fair that we keep the context in mind that this guy,
you know, played through a lot of pain.
Like, you know, there were guys in that locker room that could not believe that he was able
to tough it out in that 2024 postseason run.
So in the short term, I think this is, this is going to be a,
Willie Lampkin opportunity.
You know, it's funny.
A couple of weeks ago, I was texting someone about Drew Kendall stepping into the
starting offensive line.
And they said, like, you know, honestly, like landing going on IR, it's tough.
But like, we have some young guys that are ready to step into these roles.
And obviously, they're bullish on Drew Kendall.
They're bullish on Willie Lampkin.
I'm interested to see what it looks like.
My expectation is that Willie Lampkin will be at center.
And Drew Kendall, for all the, you know, consternation about him playing at guard,
are playing at center the last couple weeks.
I think they will move him to guard.
I think that this is the Eagles ushering in a new generation of the offensive line.
Obviously, the Lane Johnson news coming yesterday, this is going to be a forward-looking,
you know, approach on the offensive line there.
So, you know, it's a huge change, but it's one that I think that the team is actually, like,
they feel okay about because we know that they're huge fans of Willie Lampkin.
I will say, like, this is a little side note.
The idea that, all right, Lampkin's going to come in, and now he's going to go to center,
and we're going to just take Kendall and move him to guard anyway when they could have just kept Cam Durgan's at center his best position.
Yeah.
Just plug Kendall in a left guard.
Also just like makes no sense.
But I do, I'm excited to see what these guys look like.
I mean, they had some good reps together in the preseason.
Kendall and Lampkin, you know, we're going to see Markell Bell, obviously moving forward as well.
So definitely a prove-it season for a lot of young offensive linemen here in the fold for this Eagle team, a lot of turnover at the position group with we know.
they place a lot of value in.
Yeah, I'm very curious to find out or to hear over time.
Maybe we'll never know the answer,
but I would at least be curious to hear,
was it Howie that made this call or was it the Ravens that made this call?
Because obviously the Ravens have the need.
But, you know, because I think some people will read this as the Eagles are already selling.
You know, and we talked about this yesterday that, you know,
the Eagles maybe would be sellers.
I thought it would take a lot more.
But I think that this might be a situation where, you know,
if the Ravens call you and they say, like,
we'll give you a 2028 second for Cam Juergens.
Howie probably is like, wait, you'll give me what?
Like, you know, this is the type of situation where
how he might just be taken the value that's presented in front of him.
And I don't know.
I don't really necessarily read it as much as like the Eagles are,
you know, just selling off all the assets that they can,
you know, just preparing for a rebuild here.
No, I would say, I would venture to guess,
given the compensation that Eric Acosta and the Ravens called
Howie Roseman and the Eagles to set the stop.
Now, they probably didn't come in asking for, you know, saying,
hey, we'll give you a two.
But the fact that they called first,
I would imagine that the Eagles knew
that they had some leverage here.
The Ravens have a huge needed center.
I would expect Cam Durgan's to have better film
with the Ravens at center than what he's shown
the last few weeks,
certainly I'd left guard since week one.
And so, yeah, I think that my guess,
Baltimore made that call.
To your point, though, other teams are saying,
the other 30 teams are seeing this now with the Eagles.
It wouldn't shock me if Howie and Eagles got more calls
about some of the other pieces
on maybe like expiring contracts
or whether that's more.
or Ojamo, whether it's Dallas Godder, you know, you go down the list.
Like it wouldn't shock me if they started to get more of these calls,
especially over these next couple of weeks.
Yeah.
All right.
Before I hop off here, I'm going to tell you, Ian Rappaport reported that Cam Jurgens
already passed his physical to complete the trade, which is, you know, relevant because
it's the Ravens.
And also because Cam Jurgens, to my knowledge, is still in the concussion protocol.
So that's the first thing.
And then, yeah, the last thing I just wanted to say is, to your point, like,
Cam's been playing out of position for this team.
He's been playing through injury, playing through a lot of
discomfort. So I understand, again, that he has been sort of a controversial or sort of a much
criticized figure at the start of this season. But I do think that as we start to like look at this
change of an era, I think that the, I think over time, fans will appreciate these guys more for what
they did for the team. So, you know, I don't want to make it too negative on Cam Juergens because
you're right. He might, you know, settle in at center with the Baltimore Ravens and kind of get back
to playing at a level that we know he's capable of. Yeah. I think that it's a good,
scheme fit for Declan Doyle, the offensive coordinator there in Baltimore.
So I'm interested to see what that looks like.
I can't imagine that he's going to be plug and play and he's going to start here in week five.
But I would imagine that sooner or later, he'll be the starting center for that team.
And we'll see what it looks like.
Yeah.
All right, Fran.
I'm going to leave up to mystery to see who replaces me.
But I got to run to some availability.
We have plenty of more coverage.
You can follow me on social media and I'll see you guys later on.
All right, DJ.
So yeah, I'm excited to see what the.
what this looks like here for this Eagles
offensive line is we welcome in
Bo Wolf and Cuzz to talk
through this big trade here for the Eagles.
But I'm excited, guys, to see what this
young offensive line looks like for
the Eagles now moving forward. EJ.
believes that it will be Willie Lampkin in its
center. Drew Kendall sliding over left
guard. Obviously, we know it'll be Markle
Bell at right tackle. So, yeah,
it's definitely going to be a proving
ground for these young offensive linemen for the next
13 games. You are muted.
So I got nothing from you guys.
so we will wait to see until the yeah i got nothing for you guys um all right so uh yeah i'm excited
to see what these young guys continue to look like and as i mentioned back in the summer you
during training camp we started during the preseason we saw some really good reps with willie
lampkin uh andrew kendall all working together let's yeah yeah there you guys are back i got right
well fran the host of a of an emergency pod and a team's starting lineup may change but the
price of your internet will not check out the five-year price guarantee from our friends at
Xfinity because for so long the Eagles have been built on the success and and power of the
offensive line and in a 48 hour window lane Johnson retires cam jurgens is traded it is a new era
it's the beginning of a dramatic new era like we have just scratched the surface
of what's going to happen in Philadelphia they needed the picks for flexibility
That's a thing. It's very clear to be able to look now and say 2028,
two firsts, two seconds. It's wild.
Yeah. Listen, I'm with Fran. I'm anxious to see the young O line,
but what I'm really anxious to see is what how he does and how he remakes his team.
He's got young pieces on defense that he loves, that he wants to build around, I'm sure.
and he's got his offensive coach that he believes in,
and it's going to be about reshaping this whole offense.
It's crazy.
And just on the business of it, Fran, I mean,
I think we're all to get a second round pick for Cam Juergens.
No, you're right on, too, Fran, with who initiated this thing.
Yeah, I mean, there's no way that how he's calling around
and seeing who would take Cam Jurgens and he got a two back.
Like, there's no way that that, you don't make that call.
No, the Ravens were desperate. The Ravens saw it and the Ravens called. I'm with you.
Your read is perfectly right. All right. And so there you have it. The Eagles sending shockwaves in Philadelphia and through the NFL sending Cam Juergens to the Baltimore Ravens for a package that includes a 2028 second round pick.
Because two firsts, two seconds in 2028 as the Eagles try to compete this year, they are also very much keeping their eyes on the future.
Yeah, this is about the future.
Listen, I've said this a couple of times.
I think I even said it to Fran.
I probably said it to you, Bo, just privately, that how he goes into this season looking
at three outcomes, A, B, or C.
A is everything works.
Everybody's healthy.
The old line looks good.
And there was Super Bowl contender.
B, well, not everything works.
The offense is a little bit of a slog.
you're working through things,
but we could still be a division winner
and everything else.
For C, you get hit by a rash of injuries,
your stuff doesn't come together right,
and you kind of look and see that you need to retool this thing,
retweak it, and I think that's where we landed on.
It all makes for a very interesting short-term,
medium-term, and long-term for the Philadelphia Eagles.
That'll do it for this,
Emergency Pod on PHY.
Stay tuned to PHLY for all kinds of coverage of this Eagles team as everything is going on because
and you and I get ready to go to London.
Yeah, I cannot wait to be with you in London.
It's a fascinating time for this team.
I'm really interested.
My last thing advice to everybody is to follow Franz draft guide.
All right?
There's nothing better.
Nothing like it is out there on the market.
it is incredible, and I would pay close attention to offensive players.
And Fran will give you a chapter and verse with all his thumbnails, all the video,
and start watching college football.
There you go.
Like maybe Miami and Ole Miss.
Thank you, Fran.
Thank you, EJ.
Thank you, Lindsey.
Thank you, Ethan.
Thank you, everybody.
We'll be back with more.
