Hello, everybody and welcome to the PHAI Eagles podcast, an emergency podcast,
presented by Tramark Financial Credit Union and Bet365, Bo Wolf, and Fran Duffy.
We are in the Xfinity Home Studios here, and the Dallas Cowboys, Fran,
have changed the shape of the NFC East.
This is wild.
On Thursday, August 28, they have claimed Trevor Kagan,
on waivers.
I mean, look.
Balance of power has shifted.
All right.
Here's the deal.
We recorded our show today.
Fran was on an absolute heater during the spreader wins and fly draft.
I hope everybody checks that out.
We drafted the overrunners.
The show ends and someone alerts us to the fact that, you know, the national insiders
are saying, oh, actually, the Cowboys are now open to trading Michael Parsons.
And the first thing you said, Fran, was Packers.
Packers. You're going to go to the Packers. You called it. Why? How? Well, there had been some public scuttle butt that Green Bay was kind of sniffing around. And then when you talk with people behind the scenes, there were a couple of teams that had been mentioned as like, all right, like, if this were to happen, Green Bay is a team that would have the motivation and the ability to be able to pay Michael Parsons and trade for Michael Parsons. And so, you know, when it was brought to my attention that once Adam Schaefter, tweets,
it out essentially that hey like they're they're letting him seek out a trade or they're open to hearing
offers so yeah it's going to be green bet he's he's getting dealt before thursday and it didn't take
long it took about two hours from from that point uh this is wild and so the deal is kenny clark
the packers defensive tackle and two first round picks how does that stack up to you uh so when we
when this first started like you know a couple months ago when we've heard like oh you know mike
Parker Parsons and Dallas could be on the outs.
I initially said like, yeah, three ones is going to get it done.
Now, you get the two ones at a player because you got to pay this huge deal.
Michael Parsons gets the richest contract for a non-quarterback in league history as a part of this deal.
So I think that's why you land there.
This is a deal you make every day of the week if you're the Green Bay Packers.
I mean, this is this is, you mentioned at the top, like this is a, I know you were saying about Trevor Keegan, but this was a division altering trade.
This is a conference altering trade because now you, the Green Bay Packers.
attackers immediately go as one of the huge contenders in the NFC.
Many people felt that they were close to the Eagles already.
And now you add in Micah Parsons.
This is certainly a huge deal that is going to shake the construct of this conference.
I mean, two draft picks that you made in today's show.
Feel great.
Already looking way better.
I mean, one of my draft picks and then one of your draft picks,
just goes completely in time.
I'm not feeling so good.
Do you think that this make, let's talk about it?
Packers first and then and then we'll talk Cowboys. Do you think that this makes the Packers
the contender in the NFC to contend with the Eagles? To make them the contender, I would say
might be a little too far, but I mean, they, they, I would say that that's, that it certainly
makes them right there, right? I think you're right on the doorstep. I see, I think you still want to
be able to see the proof in the pudding there. It is very late in the game, but to be able to
make an acquisition like this. Yeah, I mean, this puts them right in that tier, certainly alongside
the Eagles. Now, let's think about this from the Eagles. Kenny Clark and two ones,
assume that the Eagles would have had to pay a little bit more of a premium to be in division.
Would you have traded Nolan Smith and three ones for Michael Parsons?
No one's probably three ones. Nolan Smith and three ones. That's probably a little,
that's probably a little too much. But yeah, I mean, it would have taken. Look, I said it at the very
jump when this first came up. Like, yeah, three ones and I'm not.
I'm not even thinking about it.
So yeah, if you really pushed me,
you probably could have gotten me there.
I mean, Michael Parsons is a great player.
He's extremely young.
I saw a stat.
It was after the show on social media where it was like he is the,
he is the first player in NFL history to make a pro bowl in each of his first four years
and then to spend his fifth season with a different team.
You just don't see players go, you know, get traded or get dealt or walk out the door
when they are this quality.
And it's not even just like,
yeah, he's a pro baller. He is an all pro. We saw Michael Parsons, or we saw Miles Garrett in South Philadelphia a couple
weeks ago. It is Miles Garrett and Micah Parsons at that position. They go about it different ways.
But I mean, Micah, at that age with his talent, it's an extremely huge pickup, certainly for the Green Bay Packers.
All right. Now let's talk about it from the Cowboys front because I think for Eagles fans, you know,
it's hard to top winning the Super Bowl. But like just the added sprinkle of Shadden
as like to see the Dallas Cowboys
piffle away their best player and just bungle this at every turn.
And all the time we compare the fact that the Eagles,
all of their elite players get paid the minute they can get paid.
And they end up saving money that way.
And they keep the guys happy.
And it's like it's a, it is a well run organization on that front.
And the Cowboys to some degree because they kind of like the coverage that it adds.
and because, you know, Jerry welcomes the circus.
They always push these things down the line
and they end up having to pay more than they should.
And now they end up just losing the guy.
Like, with new ownership in Washington,
do you feel like the Cowboys are the worst run franchise in the division?
Yeah, I mean, they certainly are up there.
Here's the thing.
It's certainly, look, this is a short-term boom for the Eagles, right?
I mean, you weaken a team that was pretend.
your biggest rival in the division.
I do think that if you want to squint,
this is a bad thing long term for the Eagles.
And it just depends on what the backlash is in Dallas, you know, for that.
I tuned into our,
to our cohorts down in DLS.
And those guys are live right now.
The numbers on that bad boy must be insane.
They're going through it right now.
And, you know, you listen to Jeff Kavanaugh.
What's that?
They're used to it in Dallas.
Well, no question.
Very, very similar to the Luca deal.
So maybe this means they got the number one pick.
Probably.
But you listen to Jeff and you listen to Jesse and Clarence and those guys down there.
And it's, yeah, like Jerry Jones is running this team into the ground.
You can't take him seriously.
And it is fun to see that end of it.
But then also like there's fans in the chat that are like coping hard.
And like, oh, I would have done this trade a million times.
It's a great deal for the Cowboys.
Like very funny.
That said, the public backlash is going to very much be like good for Micah Parsons.
You know, Jerry Jones has to take his medicine.
I wonder if this is like a bad thing long term to say like,
is this the situation that says like, yeah,
Jerry, like maybe take a back seat.
You know what I mean?
Like that could be the only downside to this long term.
Plus the fact that there,
I mean,
when you got Brian Chattonheimer as your coach,
you're going to content.
Yeah.
Look, this is,
you picked them to win the division today.
God.
They pick them to win eight games.
Now they're going to win three.
But look, to me, when I look at it, good for Michael Parsons.
You know, good for his agency, good for his representatives, because he didn't think that
he had enough leverage.
Yeah, look, because it was like, oh, he's got to play.
He's got one more year after this.
And then the franchise tag.
This is, you mentioned earlier, this has been the song and dance for the Dallas Cowboys
and for Jerry Jones for Dak Prescott and C.D. Lamb and Trayvon Diggs.
And you go down the line, it's not, that's like recent memory, much less like,
You know, you go eight, 10, 12, 15 years.
This has been the, the, the Zekella went through the same exact thing, right?
All their best players, you take it all the way up to the edge.
And it's like, oh, there's bad blood on both sides.
And then eventually the player gets paid higher than market price and resets the market.
And it doesn't make sense for anybody.
But the player gets, you know, ultimately gets paid.
I like that someone stuck it to Jerry Jones and stuck it to the Dallas Cowboys.
And honestly, like, it's better for it.
Like, Michael Parsons is in a better situation now than where he was three hours ago.
just colder yeah well yeah sure but and then the last thing before before we get going for
because i think we've covered most of it is just these two teams play in a week i know the eagles
and the cavalies now michael parsons was probably at this point not going to play in this game
yes um but i mean if you just think about this matchup now i mean also like just the the coverage
of this game it's funny that it's going to it's it's probably going to go from the focus being on the
defending champions to like look at this clown show organization opening up the NFL season they
can't even keep their best player well it will be salt in the wound for certain people down in Dallas
because you know while every well that's going to be the discussion for the next seven days
then you come and then the the Eagles drop the banner like uh they you know the super so to be able
to juxtapose that uh that will definitely have some people upset uh down in Dallas you should
drop a second banner that just says paid our players right like all you know all of the talent that the Eagles
and they consistently are able to get those guys paid.
It is also notable as well,
while all eyes are going to be on the Cowboys for week one,
week four,
the Green Bay Packers travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys.
So Michael Parsons returned.
It happens here in less than a month.
Eagles will play the Cowboys,
the Packers rather first game after the buy,
which will be a very fun game to watch.
And it's actually,
from the Eagles standpoint,
the Eagles have actually always handled Micah Parsons very well.
Yeah.
You know, that's a Stoutland thing and it's a game plan.
thing and obviously they've got lane johnson and jordan milada um but but micha parsons has never really like
totally ruined the game for the eagles the way he has for other teams but that's no reason to not
be just very happy from an eagle's perspective here yeah by that point in the calendar my guess is he'll
be fully incorporated into the scheme as best as he will for 2025 uh the big thing will then be like all right
moving forward you know how is it going to be used i will say like jeffley did some really creative
things defensively last year. He won't need to be as, you know, won't be,
you need to be like that mad scientist as often when you have a guy like Micah.
But you can also go the other way and say like, it will be fun to see Micah moved around and
used in a variety of ways, all the disguises and different pressure packages. That could be fun
from a schematic X&O standpoint. All right. Well, there you have it. The quick reaction from
an Eagles perspective on the NFL shattering news of Trevor Keegan going from Philadelphia to
the Dallas Cowboys, the claim being made.
They also lost Tristan McCollum today claimed by the Las Vegas Raiders.
That's what everybody needs to know.
And also, Micah Parsons is out of the division.
For Fran Duffy, but Wolf, thank you, Julia, for making it happen.
