Well, hello there, everybody.
And welcome with P.H.O.I. Eagles show on a.
Risk Tuesday.
Live.
It's a Monday, actually.
Live from the Expendanty Studio.
And presented by our friends at Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL and the Philadelphia Eagles,
Bowulf, and Fran Duffy.
Fran, happy Wednesday.
Look, it was your second show of the day.
So I understand how that happened to you?
Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
Yeah.
Not a whole lot makes sense.
But this is a very newsy day, obviously, for the Eagles and Eagles fans.
We'll get to some thoughts on the film yesterday.
You're going to have you tomorrow as well.
So we get to string out this film review over two days.
But we got to obviously start.
Why don't we just settle in with Ashley and talk about the news about Jalen Hertz?
And this is one where it is uncomfortable to have a daily show to fill
because we are at such a deficit of information here.
And so much of what's going to happen here with Jailen Hurts.
is completely unknown and is going to depend on how his body responds to these things.
But as everybody knows, the news today that he is going to be out for the season.
The blood clot traveled from his calf.
It's now in his lungs.
He had this crazy situation in London where he played on no sleep.
And he flies back.
It's this whole crazy thing.
But I think there is no doubt, Fran, that this is the beginning of what is going to be.
going to be a tumultuous situation for Hertz and the Eagles.
Yeah, because there's obviously a lot of layers to it from like the
the off field, like the handling of the entire situation and the timeline and all that.
Like the fact that it happened, like if this had happened this week instead of last week,
so many of the factors would it would not be nearly as dangerous.
Right.
I mean, the timing of it was brutal.
And we will never know how much the two transatlantic flights contributed to the current situation.
Right.
Right.
It's crazy.
Yeah.
Especially, and we said this last week, the, like, to me, the more dangerous flight was probably the first one because they didn't know that the clot existed at that point.
Yeah.
And so, you know, like from Jalen's standpoint, that's when, you know, more of the danger was there.
But, yeah, I mean, it's just a, it's a tough situation.
And then playing in the game in the first place is.
It seems insane.
Right.
I'm sure they were dealing with the information they had.
Yeah.
I'm sure that Jalen was pushing to play.
And that's part of the other thing here that I keep thinking about is, man, like,
of all the people in the entire world.
Right.
To be robbed of having a chance to, like, to be told that you are not allowed to be even associated with football right now.
Yep.
Man, he must be going nuts.
Yeah.
And, you know, I would imagine that his reality.
reaction was no like you're you're not I'm not not playing in this game uh it goes all the way back
to the saving stuff right yes he's like you you cannot take me off the field not taking me off the
field um and that's part of the reasons why like you why you love jalen hurts right like is the is that
competitive spirit but you also need to your point earlier you need somebody's got to step in in a
situation especially the lack of sleep get the rowboat and just start rowing him back home the lack of
sleep thing is is a weird like like i because i i
I'll say like I've got
you know some some knowledge on like the whole blood clot
like dynamic
I've never heard of the
the sleep is dangerous for that
right so that one is that I'm interested to get
I don't know hear more about that
yeah because I've never heard that before
yeah you would imagine
if that was not the actual
not diagnosis but right marching orders
that if it was more about like
it's better for you to stay active and that's the
that he took it or whatever it is that we will we will kind of hear some back channeling of that
yeah um it's possible that the stress of the like the stress of the situation he couldn't sleep and he
didn't sleep you know as a post like you know right that he was told not to sleep but more that he couldn't
sleep yeah right who knows right uh i know you know i did hear that he you know he was up and about
on the flight home yep which he's supposed to that's what they do it's like it so like if he was
up for 36 hours before played the game and then stayed up for the whole eight hour flight home i can't
I mean, he plays in the game, and then he practices on Wednesday, too.
Right.
Like, they weren't even like, we've got to get you home and get this sorted out right away.
Didn't get that second MRI until Wednesday.
Right.
Or the ultrasound, rather.
It's, it also, I mean, we don't know what the future holds for him.
You know, the team and he and the joint statement, like every expectation is that he'll be able to fully resume football activities.
But that's entirely dependent on his body responding to the blood thinner is the right way, right?
I mean, it's possible that this is a career-ending thing.
There's with a situation like this, it's like two-pronged as well,
where you want to find like the cause of the blood clot, right?
And then you want to like treat anything that could potentially have.
So it's the, all right, let's manage this so it doesn't get worse.
That's the part of, all right, you're not playing in the game on Sunday.
We don't want, you know, the fact that it moves, like those kind of things.
You didn't want it to become like the deep, the deep vein issue that it has become.
And certainly, you know, moving into the lungs and worsening it that way.
But then also like, what's the root cause of it?
And there's been, you know, there's reporting, all right, well, was he cleated in the game against the Rams or like, did it form from some other way?
I think it's scarier.
Yeah.
If there's some kind of, yeah, if there's a blood disorder or something like that that would then require him to be on blood thinners.
indefinitely, like, you know, permanently,
he wouldn't be able to play, ever.
Like, you know, that's, and that's, I would imagine, like,
potentially on the table.
Yeah, there's some percentage of, yeah, of an outcome for that.
What a crazy thing.
It's crazy.
It's the best quarterback in franchise history.
Yep.
And, and for all of the talk about this being like a,
you know, not make or break, but a decision point season.
Yes.
Or him and the team.
There's also like, you know, given the way that this has turned out,
there's a grossness, I think, in retrospect to the way that some people in the organization
have been talking about him and pointing the finger at him.
It's part of why I don't know how symbiotic, how kumbaya these two sides are together.
And especially like how things now go from here is going to be interesting to follow.
Yes.
I talked about the emergency pot earlier.
Like my antenna are up with that.
And I think it is generally, it's a good sign that it was a joint statement and all that.
You know, it goes out on the agent's channel with the Eagles font and like all that stuff.
Like that's generally good.
But I wouldn't necessarily take that as like, oh, yeah, like everybody's definitely rowing the same direction.
And, you know, everything's kumbaya there.
I would agree with that.
Yeah.
I don't, this is a thing that I would imagine Jeffrey's going to be really upset about
because it's the way that the organization is being painted.
You know, like this is.
Yeah.
This is the laughing stock of the league right now.
All the reporting that has come out,
the stuff that has come out about like the lack of sleep.
It makes the team look bad.
Yes.
No question.
And I'm sure that it,
I'm sure that it is not as obvious as it looks from the outside.
Correct.
Yes.
But it looks really bad.
Yep.
All right, let's close the book on Settle In.
Presented by Ashley.
I get to a couple early super chats.
from you folks,
go birds X to L.
Fran,
now that the season is cooked,
what top prospect feels
the most like a potential legal?
And I think this is the beginning
of a very long
season in which
maybe by the time we get to
mid-November,
I think we're going to be needed
to have like a draft show
once a week or something like that.
Learn the name Jordan Seton.
Tackle LSU.
Okay.
Throw,
and throw a stamp on there now.
Good player.
Okay.
Interesting.
Yako Warner.
Ballard gone and Stuyken likely to follow.
If the org wants to recreate
2022, is Stoutland still under contract?
If the Eagles' new head coach
want him back.
Wait.
Eagles or the new head coach
right back.
I would say non-zero chance
of his time.
Yeah.
That's what I mean.
Three months from now.
Jeff Stoutlin as offensive line coach
Like yeah, I wouldn't rule that out
Head coach
Probably unlikely
But as offensive line coach
Yeah I wouldn't rule that out
He is still
Under contract, right?
Correct.
Yes.
Listen, it's not
dissimilar than the Chip Howie thing
Maybe Jeffrey, this is how Jeffrey's
gonna see it come around again.
I don't want to get like too far down this rabbit hole
But maybe there would be other
former Eagles coaches that could come back as well to the nest.
Jim Schwartz.
Maybe. Interesting. What about just going to Vic?
I don't think so. Yeah. I don't think so.
CJ 0704, how many turkeys on us still winning the NFC East?
And how many wins do each of you think we will end with?
I was saying this to somebody today, like, as bad as the last month has been,
and you lose four straight. It was interesting.
Interesting is not the word.
Telling, like seeing some of the video from the locker room,
you know, from postgame locker room yesterday,
like how emotional Cooper de Gene
and like some of these guys like, you know,
that aren't used to being this position are.
But you lose four straight.
They've got three NFC East games like right here.
Like now, do you have faith that it's going to like, no, but like,
what happens if you brought all three straight?
Yes.
Like they, they even as currently constructed,
you get Sequan Barkley back,
you get Land and Dickerson back at left guard,
you put Drew Kendall back in.
center. You have another week of like the guys on defense fully healthy.
Tanner McKee like settles in as another full way. We'll talk about that.
Like a full week as the starter.
Yeah, I get you that you can talk yourself into it.
Yeah.
But on the whole, you know, it's nice to think, oh, there were a couple of plays here and
there away from potentially being four and two whatever.
Under the hood, this team is much closer to 0 and 6.
Yes.
than they are to even three and three.
I mean,
they've got out gained by 175 yards
each of the last three games.
They're also benefiting from,
like they've got the most penalty yards against them,
or against opponents in the league.
Like, these things are going to regress.
Yep.
They are way worse than they look,
just record-wise and competitive game-wise.
You are relying only on
they're going to be a different version than they've been.
And like I said, like that the division is not great.
Like these three teams, like they are three very winnable games.
Mike Kudis.
After Jalen was in the blue tent for the concussion check,
Nick said that player safety was the most important thing.
How is this safe for the player?
In a situation like that,
and we, as we talked about in the emergency pot earlier,
like I think all parties are like,
I have all the information.
And yeah, I mean, that's, as we talked about.
Like, you would imagine somebody's going to step in, but the thing is this one is, is so egregious and so, like the downside is so drastic that it is impossible to even entertain the thought that they did this knowingly.
You know what I mean?
Like, this is not like forcing Earl Wolf to come back early from a hamstring injury.
Right.
Right.
Yep.
It's like, this is your franchise quarterback.
dealing with like, you know,
serious stuff.
Yeah, right.
On the field.
Like, there's no way
they're going to put that
at risk if they thought
that that was a real risk.
Right.
But maybe they misdiagnosed it.
TZ Trez,
EJ's first day back,
he's going to be like,
hey guys,
I deleted social media
and ignored the news
while out to focus on my family.
Did I miss anything major?
Could you imagine if that was the case?
I hope that's what he did.
I don't think that's what he did.
I hope that's what he did.
Um, yeah, is E.J.
A little bit, a little bit of a little bit.
Uh, yeah, different, different situation that when, uh, E.J. was last in the show?
Mike. So was Joe Milton our next future quarterback?
No.
Uh, I am a little disappointed in the whole Milton thing. I wish it would have been, I wish it had been somebody who like, hasn't already had a chance in the NFL.
Right.
They signed up the practice squad. You know what I mean?
I mean, I want to say, maybe we'll see Cole Payton.
Even if it was some undrafted guy.
I know that Milton's got tools, but...
Yeah.
Milton, I mean, he throws it hard.
That video from last week,
oh, man, I watched that.
I laugh every time.
Here's one thing I could say
with the utmost certainty
after 24 hours removed
from yesterday's game.
That moment with the ref
is going to be maybe my favorite moment
from the entire season.
Like that I will forever remember
the ref defending himself
to Eagles fans
and then having to re-backtrack
from that.
He was outside the pocket.
And then having to come back, you know, 90 seconds later and saying like,
it was actually intentional.
I just, yeah, just perfect.
It's great.
I mean, it's great that that was such a good moment that,
that even Dallas Goddard's ass was secondary.
Yeah.
It's the funniest thing that happened in the game.
Yeah.
I can't wait until that guy comes back.
Oh, he comes back to link.
Unbelievable.
And how does he not throw a little sauce on when he actually does have to say that it was a penalty?
See, that would have been.
Like a Hall of Fame where that.
No, that would have been amazing if he had done that.
It is disappointing.
Yeah.
You've got to be a little self-depicating in that moment.
What an opportunity.
After he goes snippy, you got to.
Because now, now that, to me, that, like, makes you a fan favor.
Now you're getting cheers.
I think if you are self-deprecating in that moment.
You guys were right.
Yeah.
That would have been very funny.
But it's still really good.
Bad job by head.
Still good.
All right.
Anything else on the jail in front?
there's so much unknown
there's so much variety
variance in how this can play out
it's like
it's hard to even discuss
I just you know
you feel for Jalen
no question
and yeah I mean
of all the people
he must be
absolutely twisting in the wind
any anyone you like you
message and ask like oh like
hope he's doing all right
like that kind of thing
that is the resounding sentiment
it's like yeah like he's
He's doing okay, but like, you know,
this is Jalen Hertz we're talking about.
Yeah, right, yeah.
Yeah, it sucks.
Yeah.
We'll look at like a Greek tragedy.
The Hussey thing, it always reminds me,
it went the first time he said it,
it reminds me of something that's been
burrowed in my brain for, I don't know, 30 years now.
I think it was one of the,
I think was an ALCS between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Okay.
And it's a Lee Mozilla, miced up,
complaining to Joe Torrey
Tori about a play
at first base. Leamazili was the first base coach
for the Yankees. He's going,
he was on the bag! He was on the bag! Joe!
He was on the bag!
I just so he was like hustling. He had the same energy of that.
I hope I can find that
clip somewhere. He was on the bag, Joe!
I've never heard that. I don't remember that one. It was great.
All right, with that, we'll take you to our first break
on the PHAO W Eagles podcast. Getting into
the offense on the other side,
Tanner McKee.
It didn't look a whole lot different than what we've seen from the offense in the previous few games.
Can they fix it? What went wrong? Let's talk about it next.

Back on the page of the Eagles podcast,
Bill and Fran.
How you doing?
Doing great.
Great.
You want to talk about the film?
Sure.
Did it make you want to call your eyes out or what?
It wasn't the best thing I've watched,
but yeah, it's more of the same.
Okay.
Now it's more of the same.
the continued reliance on like the under center play action stuff
despite the historic lack of success doing it
and I'm sure the internal struggle that they're having
where it's like all right like this is kind of what we want to be
but we still aren't you know it's like this little detail
that little detail if we get those corrected then we could start
start doing it um yeah they're just continuing to not find success
doing the things that they want to be able to do
Yeah, I mean, I was trying to see if there was any, like, did they do anything really differently?
No, the answer is no.
And not really.
I mean, it's their lowest design run percentage game of the season, but that's what you expect, given where they are with the running backs.
They have the flow of the game.
It was marginally their lowest under center percentage game of the season.
Right.
It was their marginally highest 11 personnel game of the season.
Yep.
But all of that is sort of in the flow of the game.
It was not like they came out.
thinking this is who we have to be today.
Yep.
It was just kind of how it went.
Yeah, as the game went on, they started to lean a little bit, you know, spread it out a little bit
more, you know, more shotgun, more 11, but even still like, yeah, that's, yeah.
Wasn't great.
All right.
Where do you want to start?
I would actually backtrack to the first play of the game.
Okay.
Because we hit on that in the post game show last night.
And just to give a little peek behind the curtain, um, post game, I'm like, all right, I want
to get the, where are the plays, want to try and find the film and try and, try and
and, you know, buzzed through them quickly
so I can't break them down in the second block.
So I can't go through it with as fine tooth a comb
as I would, you know, for this show.
Going through it last night, it was like,
oh, like, Lampkin's going the wrong way.
And even as I was going through the breakdown,
then I noticed like, oh, not only was Lampin going the wrong way,
but Maelada was going the wrong way as well.
So I'm like, all right, maybe it's not just on Lampkin.
Let me really kind of dive deep into this
and see what I think may have happened.
And so I wanted to go back
and let's go a little bit of a more thorough
break down.
Right.
First play of the game.
And again,
again,
first play of the game.
Yes.
McKee's...
I wish to look,
by the way.
They have six plays this season.
They have one successful play
on the first play of the game.
That's brutal.
Yeah,
incompletion to Sequin.
Yeah.
You got Sequan runs for no game.
It gets injured.
Jeez.
The Bears game,
you got Mikhail Eamon for 19 yards.
Right.
Okay.
Great.
You got a run to Sequan for two,
a run to Shippeyp for three.
And that's one.
Tanner McKee's sacked for 11 yards.
Well, here on this one, you've got McKee under center,
and he's going to bring,
he begins to bring Dallas Goddard in motion.
You can see him motioning over,
and he's going to bring Dallas Goddard in motion from left to right.
And based off the concept that they ended up running on this play,
I think what the initial plan was is that it's going to be run action to the left.
You're going to have Dallas Goddard lined up here on the hip.
He's going to run the intermediate route.
You're going to get Tawicks underneath in the flat,
and you're going to get Mackay Lemon running the deep over,
with Devante Smith, basically just kind of like getting a piece of the defensive end
and kind of settling in here as a fallback option towards the middle of the field.
But you're going to get McKee rolling out and just basically working one, two, that would be the alert.
This would be number three.
I think that's what the plan is here on this play.
But when he starts to bring Goddart in motion, he literally aborts it really quickly.
And he says, no, no, no, no, let's, Goddard, you go back.
I'm actually going to bring instead, Tay Wix, you come across the formation.
We're going to flip this play.
So he brings Wicks over to the other side, and he tells Goddard, all right, you're going to stay put.
Now, after the motion, we go down to the end zone angle.
After the motion, you see that Tewicks has just gotten to his spot.
So here's Tewicks here.
And look at Jake Majors.
Majors is pointing over to the left.
And to me, I'm like, all right, he thinks he's going to be essentially sliding that way.
They're going to sell run that direction.
The problem is, literally a second later, Milata is pointing that way.
way. So Majors is pointing one direction. Mylotta's going the other direction. And then when you see
at the snap of the ball, Milata and Lampkin are blocking down to the left. Then you've got,
you've got Steen and Majors going to the right. Mark Hell Bell is going left. The running back's
going left. Like everybody is all mismatched. So whereas last night I was like, yeah, this looks like
to me like it's a mental error on Willie Lampkin. I take it back. To me, I,
I would say that this is probably on McKee and majors.
And my guess is that it's all McKee
because McKee looks like
was the one who kind of flipped this.
And if that's the case,
the communication was just not good enough there.
You make that check of the line like that,
everybody's got to be on the same page.
So to me,
that is on the quarterback in the center
to make sure that everybody's on the same page there.
Now, just on top of this as well,
Bobby O'Carike gets home for the sack here on this play.
O'Kareka had five pressures in this game.
15 pass rush snaps, so it's a 33.3% pressure rate.
Every single one of those five pressures were a quick pressure,
which next-gen stats,
a quick pressure is two and a half seconds or less.
So every single one of them was a quick pressure.
Five quick pressures by an off-ball linebacker
is the third most in a game since 2018.
And why that's so important,
McKee faced, there was the second most quick pressures
the Eagles have allowed this season,
and it was the second most unblocked pressures
the Eagles have allowed this season, five of them.
But the important thing here is that
with McKee now the starter moving forward
for the rest of the season.
Yeah.
He was sacked three times on five unblocked pressures.
Jalen Hertz had 19 unblocked pressures all season.
It was only sacked twice.
Wow.
So Jalen now, it's not like Jalen was getting out
of those unblocked rushers and making big plays.
He's not losing 11 yards.
Exactly right.
So maybe he wiggles out.
and it becomes an incompletion or something like that,
or it's a throwaway.
But that is something they have to be buttoned up
from like the past protection rules,
like not letting those unblocked rushers.
And it wasn't just the under center play action.
I'll tell you, like, so the other sack was one
where they had that run through where it was a terrible visual
for Johnny Munt and it probably was on Johnny Munt.
He's coming across the formation.
Either he or Dallas has to fall off of that
and block that run through from that linebacker.
And then there was the other sack that we broke down last night.
as well, the Trevon-Marig play.
So they cannot be allowing those unblocked pressures,
especially the quick unblocked pressures,
because McKee is not that type of guy
that's going to be able to get out of that and make a play.
Did you get the sense that it looked like
they changed this game plan?
No.
Found out that Tanner was the quarterback?
Nope.
Not at all.
No.
Why?
I mean, I know it's Thursday.
Yeah.
I think you're going straight to the walkthrough,
so it's not like, it's really,
it's one day that you have.
And it's,
you have the,
the hustle and bustle of the international travel home.
Like maybe that like shortens the week a little bit,
a little bit.
Yeah.
I,
to me,
I did not see a lot of difference with what they were trying to do
schematically,
philosophically here.
Now,
maybe it changes.
You're now going into a long week,
Monday night football.
It was not a home game.
So it's not like you're dealing with,
travel, that kind of thing.
So maybe we see a difference going into week seven against Dallas than what we saw this
past week against the Panthers.
But yeah, I did not see anything big there.
Yeah, it was an issue.
All right.
I want to have a bigger picture conversation, but let's get more into the weeds a little bit.
Yeah.
So we got just one more under center play action thing.
And this again, this goes into if they should continue doing the like leaning into this stuff.
Yeah, I'll give you my, I'll give you my stat again.
Let's hear that.
Yeah.
It's ridiculous how bad they are.
are on under-centered play action.
League average success rate
under-center play action is about 51%.
Kansas City's first in the league
at 66%.
New Orleans is 16th in the league
at 52%.
Washington is 31st in the league
at about 35%.
The Eagles are 32nd at 17%.
That's crazy.
They're worse than half as bad.
They're twice as bad as the 31st team.
Right.
They are unbelievable.
17% success rate.
And I'm trying to think,
is it like the successful plays.
One of them happened in week one.
It was that Tay Wicks play.
The Tawicks big,
the big play touchdown.
Was that even a touchdown?
Oh, yeah.
But like,
no, a touchdown.
Yeah.
Either way.
Like that, you know,
so it's that and like one or two more or something like that.
Something around that.
Brutal.
It's awful.
And we talk about like this is, hey,
this is what teams are doing
to try and combat it.
They're seeing more blitzes, especially the Eagles.
You know, and when they lined up condensed, the teams are loading up the box more often
than they are against other teams.
Like, it's just inviting a lot of players into the box.
The Eagles have not been able to capitalize on the benefits of playing from these condensed
sets.
Here's another example.
This is second half.
First and 10.
You just hit Devante Smith on a completion for a first down on the drive.
So you come out, it's 11 personnel.
The Panthers are a nickel.
This is going to be an under center play action.
boot to the right. So McKee is going to be rolling to his right here on this play. And the plan
is to bring Darius Cooper in motion before the snap from left to right. He's going to settle in
kind of like a wing alignment here. And he is going to just kind of get in the way of this
defensive end, block the defensive end briefly, just get a piece. And then you're going to get
Markell Bell. He's going to block 97. And everybody else is, again, you're kind of selling run this way
with Tanner McKee booting out of it. But watch what happens here when
Tanner McKee, before the snap, looks over to Darius Cooper.
As soon as he turns his head, and this is like a timing thing,
this is something that you kind of scout on film.
The Panthers were in a four-two front, like kind of a standard front here.
As soon as McKee turns his head to bring Cooper in motion,
now they change the front.
So the defensive end that's lined up outside of Markell Bell,
he's going to kick inside.
O'Caricke comes down and plays off the edge here.
So now it's like the, you know, what the Eagles do with Zach Bond,
where now the front has changed.
And so now if you are Markell Bell,
you are chasing the nose tackle here.
And Cooper, he's got to block a defensive end
who's lined up as a four-eye technique
inside of Markel Bell.
And you've got this other rusher here
that's unaccounted for in theory.
And so now the ball snapped.
You got a hard run action to the left.
Markele Bell chases the nose tackle.
I love Darius Cooper.
Actually, I like Darius Cooper as a blocker.
He's not going to block.
two and he ends up trying to block two on this play. Now my guess would be,
they want him to just go full bore on this defensive end. Like you leave this guy loose,
leave O'Carickey loose because you're hoping McKay Lemon is coming across the formation and that's
going to kind of account for him. But again, it just leans so often we see guys that aren't sure
of what they're supposed to do. Like it shows up in pass protection. It shows up in the run game.
It shows up running routes, especially here in this kind of situation. So he tries to take two here
instead of just do your job in block one,
and now you've got a defensive end
right in Tanner McKee's face.
Look, McCoy Lemon is going to be one-on-one
with a linebacker in the flat,
and McKee ends up having a dirt this ball,
and he throws it, and now, it's not like,
even if, like, the,
if Cooper had blocked that defensive end,
and let's say they're over here,
and he gets a little bit of a piece,
I mean, there's not really anywhere else.
It's not like, oh, man,
like there was a wide open receiver here on this play,
but regardless, like,
the lack of detail, you know, the lack of preparedness,
the indecision with a lot of these guys.
It shows up.
It is a consistent theme, and it's a different player all the time,
which I'm sure internally, like, all right, well, if we fix this, we fix that.
But the fact that it keeps showing up that it's across the board,
a lot of these guys, like having that, that insecurity with what they're doing,
I don't know.
That's a bright flag for me.
I don't want to keep bringing it up, but.
Right.
I know.
Feels like coaching to me.
Yeah.
Yep.
If only they had the best offensive line coach in the league.
Didn't run them out of town.
Yeah.
It might not look so bad.
Sorry.
Yeah.
It's not great.

back on the pagello angles podcast right where do you think the Eagles rank in a rushing
in the NFL.
30th?
32nd.
Dead last.
I try to give a little bit of benefit of the doubt.
What do you think they rank in yards before contact per rush on running back runs?
That's got to be 32nd.
Actually, 31st.
Oh, who's worse?
The Giants.
Oh.
That's where the Giants are going to send a second round pick for Sequin Parkley.
Could you imagine?
I was trying to think of who the teams would be that would actually trade for Sequin.
The Giants, for sure.
Green Bay was one and Minnesota was one that I thought of.
Okay.
Yeah.
I see this.
Yeah.
Houston maybe.
Houston?
I feel like there was one of the team I had in my mind.
Although Houston just gave up us too, so probably not going to know.
Oh, yeah.
That's true.
Maybe.
Oh, what about New England?
They saw it up close to personal in summer.
Right.
They've given up some picks, though, lately.
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah, plus they just, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
We'll say.
Denver?
No, they got other issues.
Okay.
That's about it.
Yeah.
What do you got?
Here's my general thoughts on Tanner,
based off the tape, you know,
watching from yesterday.
I thought that he did some good,
he did some bad.
I thought that he came out a little tight.
I thought the first like three, four drives, a little bit unsettled, a little bit rushed.
Talked about like the, you know, the air with communication on the very first play of the game.
But overall, I thought it was okay.
I think that there are some things that they continue to build around and there are some good, like for the way that he needs to play.
I thought there were some good things.
And you say, like, all right, like, you can work with this, you know, for the rest of the season now.
Thinking about it now, like, all right, like, being in the boat they're in, like, yeah, they're going to have to try and figure this out.
for the foreseeable future.
I don't want to.
I'm broken record.
Yeah.
Ridiculous to keep bringing it up.
But the way that things have played out.
Right.
They could not have possibly mismanaged that quarterback thing this summer anymore.
You robbed McKee of confidence and reps.
Yep.
You didn't get Cole Payton any reps.
He's your number two quarterback now.
You didn't even get to play in the preseason.
And you angered Andy Dalton so much that he wouldn't even come back.
Yeah, but then we got that, we got to watch that Joe Milton video.
He screws all three things.
All right, yeah.
But, you know, we're the morons.
Should we go to a play that I thought, uh, 10 are some good things?
Yeah, please.
Yeah.
All right.
So I talked about, they, they have no choice, but to build things around him now.
Correct.
Um, I would say, you know, I talked about like the, the issues that he'll have and will,
he will continue to have against unblocked rushers.
So, you know, if you, if they, if a team gets a free run at him, he is not a guy that's
going to wiggle out and make a problem.
and make a play.
But one thing that I was intrigued by
was that I thought,
or encouraged by, I should say,
is that he was able to operate with bodies around him.
I thought that there were some really good subtle pocket movement
stepping up, stepping up, stepping to his left,
delivering with the ball,
getting away from the rush subtly
and delivering down the field,
you know, with bodies around them.
And the one was this conversion here.
It came on second and seven.
The Eagles come out in 11 personnel here
versus the Panthers nickel defense.
And before the snap,
you see that McKee,
is pointing out the rusher or the linebacker here.
That's Devin Lloyd, who is a good blitzer
and a guy that they've utilized a lot
as a rusher in that scheme.
So what they're going to do is they're going to slide the protection
towards Lloyd's side.
Lloyd is going to be the fifth guy
that the offensive line is going to be accounted for
because you've got one, two, three, four down linemen,
and then they're going to account for Lloyd as the fifth.
So they're going to slide the protection that way.
So you majors is going to slide to his left,
Lampkin, Jordan Milata.
That's the zone side.
and we talk about, all right, opposite the slide,
the running back is often going to insert himself opposite of that
so that he's going to work anybody there in the A-gap,
namely that linebacker.
You're going to get man-to-man with Tyler Steen on the defensive tackle.
Markele Bell is going to be man-to-man against the defensive end.
Dallas-Scott, he's releasing out onto a route.
So you've got hat on a hat here.
The numbers work in your favor.
This should be a pretty clean protection.
But McKee gets fooled here on this play
because Devin Lloyd does not pressure
He does not rush.
Instead, he is going to be buzz out in the coverage.
The defensive end that Milato was sliding out to, he's actually dropping.
So this is going to be a zone pressure.
You've got a defensive tackle slanting opposite.
You've got another defensive tackle looking across Steen's face.
Markell Bell's still going to be one-on-one.
That's fine.
The linebacker, O'Kerachie, he is going to blitz.
So now you've got Damien Pierce.
He's got a cross, and he's going to try and block the linebacker here,
the blitzing linebacker.
I do think the offensive line handled this pretty well.
where Jake Majors, he's going to pass the defensive tackle off.
He gets his eyes backside to help out Tyler Steen.
I thought the line did a decent job here with the stunt protection.
The running back Pierce was a little bit late getting over to O'Carkey.
So the collision happens basically in Tanner McKee's lap.
But what I like here from Tanner is that you had Goddard.
He knows, all right, you know, the route I've got for Dallas Goddard here,
it's like a little arrow route, like a quick in-breaking route.
And he knows like, all right, if I was wrong on the blue,
The blitz is coming from the opposite side.
This ball's got to come out fast.
He can't put this ball here because the linebacker buzzed right underneath it.
He's got to put this right here.
He's got to trust this and he puts this right up the hash marks and he hits Dallas on the money here for a good first down.
And so, and again, he's doing that from a pocket that is tightening up around him.
So from close confines is able to make that throw on the money and a first down.
So that was probably one of my favorite Tanner McKee plays of the afternoon.
and it happened there on a second and long.
Majors, I want to ask you about.
Yeah.
Because aside from the snap, which it was a huge play.
Yep.
It wasn't terrible.
Yeah, he had a, I thought it was a better performance last week.
The snap was bad and it couldn't have happened in a worse spot.
Well, I guess it could have happened in a worse spot,
but you had a little bit of momentum, you had a chance to come back,
and then it does just feel like any negative play for this team.
cannot recover.
You can't recover.
Like,
everything just seems so hard.
I know.
Second and 21,
it's like,
okay, let's take a two yards.
The first play,
the second play of the game.
So, like,
it's second in,
second in 21 or whatever it was.
All right.
Throw a quick slant.
Yeah,
they throw a quick slant.
And it's like,
and there wasn't like,
oh, yeah,
like that's where McKee went.
Like,
it was like, yeah,
they call a quick slant to McCai Lemon.
It's like,
all right,
best case scenario,
it's third and 15.
Like,
I don't know.
There were a few of those
that I didn't love in this game.
That wasn't the only one.
There were a few of them,
but yeah.
Overall, there were areas.
To me, I want to get into one.
This is actually,
this would be another one.
I talked about McKee where I felt like he was a little bit rushed early on
and a little bit hurry and he kind of left some meat on the bone.
And I thought he got better as the game went on,
but this was actually a second possession.
I want to get to this one here because I thought this one,
he got to the checkdown a little bit late,
a little bit fast.
I just thinking about this,
and I have to tell you this.
Yes, what you got?
Okay.
Oh no.
Yards per reception for running backs in the NFL.
Okay.
Okay.
There are 78 guys with at least three receptions.
Okay.
I was thinking about this because Damien Pierce looks like, I mean,
he's got, it's the fifth running back.
He's got hands like feet.
Yeah.
He's like feet.
Yep.
He's got a few drops.
2.2 yards per reception.
Okay.
Damien Pierce.
That is 77th of the 78 running backs.
Okay.
You know who 78 is?
St. Van Barclay.
Oh, jeez.
Tank Biggsby's 69.
Wow.
I mean, it's like, that's brutal.
That's terrible.
What are they doing?
That's bad.
That's a pretty telling stat.
I got to find.
I'm going to just find the team,
the team overall rank.
And Carson Steel,
one for six yards.
Might be the lead.
Yeah, he's got a lead, yeah.
Oh, gosh.
And then, like, he gets like one shot and he gets hurt.
What a weird year, man.
What are you weird year?
All right, well, let's look at one of these
Damian Pierce catches here
because this is the second possession
come out at second and ten
and the Eagles come out in 11 personnel
two by two sets.
Three point five yards per reception
for all running back.
Whereas who's 31st and how about it?
4.2.
So point seven.
Wow.
Same difference.
It's only 25.
31 to 25.
Notice one.
All right.
All right.
So here on this one,
Taywicks is the runoff player here.
He's lined up.
as the number one receiver.
He's gonna run a vertical route,
not really a part of the progression here on this play.
Dallas Goddard is gonna run basically a quick,
outbreaking rally, a little bit of like an option-y type of route
depending on the coverage.
He's gonna attack leverage and find a soft spot.
So he's gonna run out towards the sideline on this play.
Pierce is in the flat, he's kind of the checkdown.
You've got Mackay Lemon lined up in a stack formation.
He's gonna run a crosser.
And I think the way that you wanna work this,
if you're kind of reading this out,
would be one Godder and then get your eyes back.
If you've got time and you feel okay,
That's your second read, and this is your checkdown, like if you're feeling hot.
On this play, McKee takes, and this is the top of his drop, he kind of surveys, all right, it's a single high coverage here, whether it's man to man or whether it's cover three, single high coverage.
You've got, again, Wix is going to kind of lift coverage here, and Goddard is going to run into the void outside of it against it.
So Goddard's one-on-one with the safety.
And so I really like what McKee does here is that he throws a little bit of a shoulder fake, a pump fake, over in that way.
So he closes off his shoulders.
He looks like he's going to make this throw to Goddard,
and that gets the safety to bite down hard.
And again, create some space here in the middle of the field,
and that's where Mackay Lemon is running.
And honestly, it's going to be there where McKee,
if he, like, really quickly and decisively gets his eyes back to the middle,
he can cut this loose.
This might be a nice gain here,
because you see a lot of space for where Lemon is going to be running into this.
But I think he just felt a little bit rushed
and ends up trying to throw this check.
and
Pierce ends up stumbling
and ends up going for,
I think it goes for minus three.
So I think all you're looking at this.
I would look at that one as,
all right,
like just a little bit rush,
like a little bit too fast.
Then he goes to the checkdown there on that play
and it ends up going for a negative gain.
So it's third and 13 and they end up punting.
But like I said,
I thought he got better as the game.
Yeah, he got better as the game went on.
And for the,
for the type of quarterback he is,
and we'll get him, maybe we'll do it in the next break
or in the next segment, like,
it's got to be timing and rhythm.
Like, you think of like classic,
like West Coast, like timing and rhythm pass game.
That's kind of what you're leaning into
with Tanner McKee.
It's not going to be, like,
you can get into like the play action,
like the, you know, rolling the pocket
and stuff like that.
Like you, if you block it up,
like you can do that with his skill set.
Tanner rolling to his left on the first play of the game.
Well, that's why I think he flipped it.
I think initially it was,
I think initially it was going to go to his right.
And it's, to me, looks like he might have flipped it.
But, uh, yeah, it will be, it'll have to be a timing and rhythm past game moving forward.
I'm willing to give them, I'm willing to give them a week.
Yeah.
Give them a week.
To put this, put a game plan together for them this week.
Yep.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I would say like my biggest disappointment so far has been the lack of like real creative
solutions to problems.
Like we joked about like the, oh, like, all right, you're not getting good blocking for the tight end.
like lean into more 6-0-line stuff like that like stuff like that i was listening to um
the athletic football show on the way on the way on okay and they made a mention of houston it's like oh like
houston they lose david montgomery uh uh whatie mark's not really a short yardage back they've had
some struggles in short yardage like what are they going to do all right they come out in third
and this game they put katesdover under under center and they run a cuby sneak with kate's though
with a tight end and it's like yeah creative solution to a problem that's kind of there's no urgency
to solve these things.
At some point, that urge,
he's got to show up, I think so.
Well, you know, Nick said after the game last night,
they're open to all, you know,
nothing is off the table.
Right.
I don't really think he's going to have
that much more patience.
Yeah.
Hosting the Anthony show this morning we had.
What's his name?
I won't know.
I can't help you.
The guy from the Atlantic.
Sack Vermman.
just talking about like what could that mean.
He was under the assumption that there would be something a little bit more
like half measured.
Like maybe Mannion comes down to the field to call games instead.
But I don't know.
You've got an extra day this week.
It feels like if they're going to make a bigger change,
it would be now as the time.
I don't know.
Does Nick become more involved in the offense?
Is it more that Nick is telling Mannion,
you got to scrap that stuff?
You put the plan together, but it's got to be more bespoke for Tanner.
Yeah.
I don't know.
If they had more time on task with Tanner kind of running over the summer,
maybe that would have helped things.
Well, maybe.
Yeah.
All right.

Joe, Igoe's podcast. Tizzy
Trays with a very generous Superchat. Thank you.
TZ. Thank you. Part one.
Panthers really emphasized how weird our plan was.
They spent multiple seasons building an offense
around Bryce's strengths.
Our plan was,
let's hire a first-time play caller
to install a new system doing things
our QB hasn't really done.
I do think that is, you can learn something from that aspect of it
where you have the continuity with that staff.
And I would point to the same thing
to Houston and C.J. Stroud.
because he made huge strides, obviously, from last year this year after a lot of inconsistencies a year ago
and people saying, oh, this guy's not, you know, he's not what everyone thought he was,
this guy's a bust, Bryce Young's a bust.
Yes, we do see the cases where a Liam Cohen and a Ben Johnson and those guys come in,
take over and you see the quarterback in the past game take flight right away.
But other times it can be a slow burn and do you have the patience to kind of weather that storm?
we did say back in like the spring like I don't know that the Eagles have that
that luxury you know given where you know the questions were with the coaching
staff like a year ago at this time there's you can be patient with the 20th best
offense right I know it's can't be patient with the worst offense in football said
we said great you know what did I say yesterday like growing pains like you can accept
this is like full amputation of both feet like you know it's where we are past growing
pains like it's been it's been really bad part two from Tizzy hindsight of course and
like challenging players to expand their skill set, but the downside of the plan is now obvious.
Now we have to rebuild the offense again next year.
I like, because we're going to have so much time to talk about that if we go down that path,
like, yeah.
Yeah, it'll be a big, that'll be a big discussion.
Heath, birds fan from Cali.
Will they change the offense play calls on Monday since these plays were meant for Hertz?
Will we ever get over the three and out curse?
It's agonizing to watch.
this totally agree yeah I mean
three and outs on 11 possessions yesterday pretty good stuff
still not one on the first drive of the third quarter still waiting on that
for that super points it is and that's why like we'll talk about the defense
tomorrow I don't it there is no excuse if they come out next week yeah and
look the same yeah
in terms of what they're trying to do.
In terms of what they're trying to do.
Yeah.
Yep.
I think there is reason for some optimism when you say, like, all right, you get the full week with Tanner and you get these guys back.
Like, I would anticipate that the offensive line has two new players in it next week.
So, you know, on Monday with Landon at left guard and Kendall at center.
And you get Sequin back and you've got Devante who was like, I don't know, pitch counts not the right word.
But, like, you know, he was kind of in and out yesterday.
get those guys back out there
and see what it looks like.
Oh my gosh, is that on Monday night?
What?
CDP's Super Chat.
Is Jeffrey Lurie excited to enter the Eagles Hall of Fame
on Monday night?
Is that this week?
Oh, I hope not.
Oh, my God.
As a sign of solidarity,
he should stay awake for 36 hours beforehand.
I can't do that.
No, there's no way.
Oh my gosh
That was a tough night to do it
Is it the night
Do we know if it's the night?
Jeffrey Larry
Oh my gosh
I can't believe that's this week
Oh it is!
Oh my God!
Oh no
They got a postpone
Call by CDP
They got postponed
I don't know if they're
I don't think they're going to postpone
They got to just hope
that nobody leaves.
Nobody stays in their seats.
I'm pretty sure they're not going to hope that.
Oh, man.
We've got to get to the Hand Your Delta
presented by our friends at Bed Parks.
My question for you, Fran,
aside from Devante Smith,
who has the most catches the rest of the season
for the Eagles?
Is it...
Got it.
Mackay Lemon, Darius Cooper, or Taywicks?
Oh.
Goddard, not an option.
Of the other receivers.
Oh, you're just of the other
see or sorry I got jumped the gun I was anticipating um of those three remember when
tewicks the first two weeks of the season like a difference-making player yeah I want to say
lemon I think I would say lemon yeah I think lemon part of it is I think they're gonna like it's
worth just trying to get him more involved yeah that's what I think so there was the the one play
they ran it kind of early where it was a um kind of like an outbreaking route and he tried to
he had to dive to make the catch.
McKee put it a little bit too far out.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Falling incomplete.
That was the one thing where I was like,
oh, like, that was, you know,
quasi-creative where,
uh, basically they did this motion that they do a lot,
where McKay Lemon is in the slot and they bring a receiver,
uh, from outside in, like,
and basically off a stack,
like, send that receiver running across the field and then Mackay runs behind
it like a, like a dig or like an in-braker behind it.
Um, and instead of him running the in-braker,
he ran like, uh, kind of like an in-out route where he initially starts working
like he's going to run the end-euvre.
Liambreaker and then break back outside.
Zach Hertz used to make a killing on this route.
Like so many times I remember him like running the almost exact route.
He was a little clunky doing it.
I do think like his his route running,
we talked about this in the summer where like the differences between,
you know, like what Tay Wicks and Devante Smith do as route runners.
Like like hey, one on one and I'm going to create separation against this guy
versus like finding soft spots and zone.
Mikey Lemon is more the latter.
Like he does a good job of like kind of like finding soft spots and making
himself available, whereas his ability to kind of set a defender up and, like, you know,
win at the top of the route is not quite there yet. That was an example of that, where I feel
like he needed to do a little bit more. I wonder if that's like, I wonder like Zacharts watching
that. Because again, like clear his day, Zacherts used to run like 2017 through like 2020,
Zacherts made a killing on those kind of routes. That would be one. I wonder how he would coach him up
on that. Eagle Mac with a super chat. And that'll close the book on the hand you don't present by it.
parks I am shaken who knew what when when I expect better and they add I have had an

have been unreal if the Jaguars game ended with a game-winning drive after

Ridiculous.
I, like, yeah.
Yeah.
If the...
Just insane.
Crazy.

Chelloween stars.
If the Eagles end up with a top five
or top ten pick and still don't have clarity
on Hertz's status by April,
do they have to go quarterback?
And if so, who's your favorite?
Do they have, I, oh, let me just say I don't, I'm not envisioning this, you know,
I mean, it depends on how high the pick is.
They might, you know, there are plenty of situations that pop up every year where a team
might want a quarterback and they're drafting at six, but they can't get in position to take one.
A lot of time still for that to kind of work out because as we have discussed,
I think we've discussed it in the spring, you know, there was a lot of anticipation for last year's
quarterback class to the class of 2026 and a lot of the,
those guys ended up going back.
And a lot of the biggest names for this year
that people were excited about,
there's a chance that a lot of those guys go back.
There's a chance that Archmanning goes back to school.
There's a chance that Dante Moore goes back to school.
There's a chance that, you know,
Lenora Sellers and Sam Levitt
and a bunch of, you know, Drew Mestemaker,
all these guys go back to school.
So the only ones that are kind of locked in,
really like it's Trinidad Chambliss from Ole Miss.
Jade Mayava and John Mateer,
who I think are more like later round guys,
you know, mid-round guys.
Trinidad Chambles
Kind of like Bryce Young
It would be fun
Like small
They work in the middle of the field
Fun player
Time to get two
Overtime
Go on more Super Chats
That's okay
That was it
I thought there was one more
Oh that was it
All right
When you break us down
This last plan
That'll tell you
What the last time
He was that a good
offense performance was
All right
Let's go to the last one
So
To me this was
probably one of my favorite
dropbacks of the game for the Eagles.
It happens on 3rd and 7.
They come out in 11 personnel
and the Panthers are in nickel.
The Panthers are playing cover 6 on this play.
They're playing cover 2 to the top.
So you've got a cover 2 corner
with a cover 2 safety over the top of this.
You've got quarters to the field side.
So you've got these two defenders
kind of playing quarters here to this side.
You've got the underneath zone defender.
You've got another underneath zone defender here.
And you've got a pressure front with five guys
up on the line of scrimmage,
Devin Lloyd is mugged up over the center.
He's actually going to drop out.
It's just going to be a four-man rush.
So you've got one, two, three, four underneath with three deep.
That's the look here on this cover six call from the Carolina Panthers.
Now, the Eagles come out, and here's the concept.
Basically what you've got is Devante Smith running an in-breaking route,
and that's who's going to end up getting this ball.
You're going to have Dallas Goddard.
He's going to work vertically up the field and then break outside.
And again, similar to the other route that we talked about,
it's going to be a little bit of like an option-ish route,
depending on how the coverage deploys itself.
And then the other route I want you to watch
actually comes from Lemon where he's going to attack the middle of the field
and then just basically sit down over the ball.
And so those are going to be the complementary routes here
with the idea to create some space for Devante Smith.
And honestly, the concept works really well.
Dallas Goddard works vertically up the field to hold the eyes of the linebacker.
He's going to break outside.
And you can see Bobby O'Caricke has his shoulders open
to the sideline, it will be hard for him to make a play on a ball thrown behind him.
And then you've got Devin Lloyd.
He's held on that logo just enough by this route from Lemon.
And look, it's not the tightest of windows, but it's also not like wide open either.
That's the, that's the alley that McKee has to be able to put this ball on Devante Smith here
in the middle of the field.
And he does a really good job.
And you can see, like he's already ready to uncork and let this ball loose.
He puts it on Devante.
He has to put it on the back shoulder to keep it away from the linebacker there in the middle
the field. Devante makes the catch, ends up taking a hit here afterwards, but this is what this
passing game is going to be about when you've got Tanner McKee in there. It's going to be about
timing. It's going to be about rhythm. It's going to be about decisiveness. And you're going to need
the concepts to be able to work for you, right? Because he's not going to be that play extender
to kind of create with the ball in his hands. The longer he holds on the football, the worst things
generally are going to get. He did make some plays outside of structure in this game. But you want him to
be decisive, everybody on the same page.
Obviously, the protection's got to hold up.
But I thought this was the best example of,
all right, this is what you wanted to look like here moving forward.
And I thought this was a good drop back here from McKee.
And it happened in the second half.
We have a super chat off the books from Cliffy Two Sox.
Oh, C2S.
Says, if Lurie accepts that Ring of Honor thing Monday night,
Jalen Hertz, deserves to own half of the stock in the franchise
after he sues the pants off the team.
I don't think they're going to cancel that, man.
I'm pretty sure that's going to happen.
Last time the Eagles offense had an above average game in both success right and DPA per drive.
It had to be last year, right?
Week 16 last year against the commanders.
Okay.
All right.
It's not that bad.
I thought you were going to dig back a little further last year.
Yeah.
Good.
Okay.
How many turkeys would you put on the Eagles having an above average offensive performance next week against a bad Cowboys defense?
I'm sorry, America.
We got to watch the Eagles offense against the Cowboys defense
for an Asian America should be apologizing to you
Yeah look
The Cowboys did you watch that game last night?
Yes
Yeah the Cowboys the offense didn't look great last night
The defense didn't look great either
But it was a little bit better
To me the offense kind of lost that one for Dallas
But yeah I would expect the Eagles
To be able to move the ball a little bit against that team
So if it looks as bad as it has
over the last month.
Probably not a good sign.
Yeah.
Make for a long November and December.
Long December around there's no reason to believe.
All right.
I guess that'll do it for this episode of the PHALU's podcast.
I'm going to listen to Nick Siriani who speaks in just a minute,
trying to get it on that.
Presser, tomorrow we'll talk about the defense.
Is there hope?
Is Jonathan Grinard ever going to do anything?
I don't know.
Played like 22 snaps yesterday.
He's no Kishon James Newby, baby.
Ibakati played like almost more than double the snaps.
And Epicatee.
Evakati.
Mylata.
I told him my lotta.
All right.
Thank you, Lindsay.
Thank you for all the super chats.
We'll talk to you tomorrow at 2 o'clock for Fran.
I'm Bo.
As always, we love you.
