One week from today, training camp starts. Who are we most excited to see when the Eagles hit the practice field, put the pads on? E.J. and I are going to run through our lists next on the P.H.O.I. Eagles podcast. Jay Smith and E.J., we are seven days away from the first Eagles practice in the summer. How are you doing? I'm doing well. I decided to go backwards hat today. You know, we'll put the listeners behind the curtain. Listen, maybe this is a, yeah,

this is like a little movie making, a little preview of something to come later in the episode. I hope not. I don't know what that is in reference to. I was just going to tell everybody, I'm off the next two days. So this is like my Friday. Oh, this is the beginning of easy breezy.

This is easy breezy. Quitting time is when E.J. flips that hat around. Here we go. This is a Friday for me, and that's why you got easy, breezy backwards hat E. DJ today. All right. I like that.

Now I realize what you're talking about. Yeah, maybe you'll see somebody else with the easy breadcrum that you're dropping. backwards had, yeah. Yeah, fantastic. All right, good stuff.

Now, our job today, EJ, is we're just, we're going to have a nice, this is a friendly draft. After yesterday's, this is a non-competitive draft. This is a personal draft.

There are no bad picks. There's no using the first overall pick on the worst left tackle that anybody drafts on their teams. It's totally fine. I have regrets. If I'm being honest. It's a fun draft.

And I'll tell you what, as training camp is a week away, I'm, you know, I know deep down, I will be happy when training camp starts. There is nothing better than being there in the summer, watch and practice. It is the best time to be a beat reporter. You are the eyes and ears. You get to see these guys. The storylines develop, but also it's little data points of as you follow them throughout their career.

And you're just watching ball. It's great. Right now, you know, I would be happy for the. summer to continue. That's fine. But doing this exercise and running through the roster and we're like, who am I really excited to see? This was my first time being a little juice. I'm getting a little bit of juice. Okay. I get a little bit of juice for football practice. Yeah, I was going to say, it is fun. You start to think about all of the different players that you're going to be keeping an eye on. 91 different storylines, different people. 92? Yeah, I mean,

they still got Tucker large, I believe, is on IR. Okay. So they got 92 on the roster going in. Big storyline. How large can he get? On IR? I mean, there are no limits. I like when a person has a last name that is an adjective. Tucker Large. Rachel has a co-worker, a guy named Bill Smart. Got out to Bill Smart.

That's a great one. Tucker Large, that's good too. I like those. Bill is very smart. Let me know your favorite adjective last names in the chat. That could get a little dicey. What about Maximus Pully? You believe that pulley is an adjective?

I mean, it's not a word that you'd find in Merriam-Webster, but I mean, if you say the word pulley, like if you said someone's pulley, you can figure out what that means. I guess. Early Super Chad from CDP, how do you rank strength of these relationships? This is interesting.

Jalen and Nick, Nick and Howie, and Howie and Jalen. Okay, I think... It's a good question. I think we know what is last. I think we know it's first too Nick and Howie is first

They're so chummy when they're on the podium together Yeah but is that performative Oh it's performative but Jailet and Nick don't do that when they're around each other But I think that could be that could that could mean more I don't I think there was a time when Jalen and Nick would have definitely Been

I think there was a time and they would have been third I think right now there's no doubt in my mind That Howie Jalen is dead last Yeah, I would say so. Yeah, and that's that to some degree is normal. I mean, franchise quarterback in the GM, if you're like an entrenched franchise quarterback. Very good question to start the show. Yeah, shout out to CDP.

What is CDP doing asking a real question? I mean, he asks real questions sometimes. I know. Yeah, CDP, great. Shout out to CDP. Yeah, if you're like Josh Allen, you probably have a good relationship with your GM. Yeah. But if you are.

There's no, there's no sense for, to Brett Veach to ruffle feathers with Patrick Mahoney. Right. But if you're not in that complete upper echelon, you know, one of the three quarterbacks drafted in the one per 32 team type of quarterback, even Lamar Jackson would have a contentious relationship with his gym too. So I guess it's pretty normal. I think I would also venture to say that I think that relationship is worse than it has been.

Yeah, I don't think that it's like hostile, but yeah, I think it's probably businesslike. Yeah, I also think it is not interpersonally nasty. it is just They see each other for who they are. Well, and also it's like minions doing work against that person. You know what I mean? It's like seeding out doubt in this person.

And as opposed to being like talking smack directly or something like that. Whereas I would imagine there are times when Howie and Nick have actually had vocal disagreements with each other, but that does not necessarily mean that it's a fractured relationship. That's why this has made me even more convicted

that Nick and Howie are the best one. I think that they're probably the closest. They might argue, but I don't know. I don't think there's a mutual respect between Jalen and Nick, but I don't think they're close. Yeah. Yeah. No, I think you're probably right,

but I also think that Howie views Nick as, puppet is too strong of a word. I'm very curious to hear what word you're going to go here. But someone who is well suited to do, who is well positioned to allow him to do what he wants to do. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah, but I don't think that Nick's resentful.

And I also don't think that Nick is unaware of that. Yeah, I don't think he's resentful. I think Nick understands the nature of that relationship. Yeah. Yeah. I think Nick appreciates how I feel like you. I think you're probably right. I think that is the strongest relationship.

Mm-hmm. But I also think I think that Nick Jalen is a pretty healthy relationship right now. I agree. I think it's totally healthy. Like mutual respect, I think that they work well together, but I don't think they're close. I think that the ship has sailed on that. No, but I think they are,

I think they are, the mutual respect of it, I think means that they are as close as they have probably been. I agree. Yeah. They're also like they are the ones who have worn the wounds of everything that this team has been through over the past five years more than anybody else.

Depends on how you, like how you would define a good relationship. Like I think Nick and Howie are way more like, to be like, you know, giggling as they walk down the hallway together. But like Nick and Jalen have like been through real things and gotten through things together. So, yeah, it depends on how you define a relationship. Yeah. Yeah.

That's a good philosophical discussion. I feel like we're got the show is done. I think we didn't get out. Let's have it. You think our wives are like proud of us when we talk about relationships on the show? You think that they're like, those are some like well-adjusted men right there? I don't think our wives are listening to this show. Oh, speak for yourself and your family.

Julia watches the show. I called Julia on my way home. I just hear her listening to the draft in the background, which he picks up the phone. That is a tough one to listen to for a non-sicum. It was my first time, first time doing the draft. I felt okay about it. I wouldn't draft Laramie Tonsel first if I could do it over again.

I just like I should have drafted Sonny Stiles later in the draft. Well, it just doesn't make sense. I understand the thought process behind it because he is the best player in that team. And it's a bad team. is an important position, but you're drafting an important position and you're not getting the best one. Yeah, I really, I think I just,

I just overthought the game theory. But again, you know, next year, we're coming for this. Okay. How does it feel to finish second? I mean, I very clearly finished first. No, I think you actually quite clearly finish second. No, it was a close, it was a close battle. Don't let, don't let Fran's vocal,

uh, assured this. I heard anything other than the fact that I have the most best players at their position in the draft. Just because you say that doesn't mean it's true. Okay. Who's the best left tackle in football? Who's the best edge rusher in football? Who's the best safety in football?

Who's the best corner in football? I don't know. I'll check friends seem to find out. Okay. I think Fran won. I think most people agreed that Fran won. Fran only wins if you really buy into the cult of McVeigh. And when the...

You didn't have McVeigh. Oh, okay. Oh, Ben Johnson, the cult of Ben Johnson. You just like guys who take their shirts off. But these rosters are so loaded that coaching matters less. I agree with that. I also think that Matt LaFour is the guy who drafted in Sean McVeigh. We should probably do some of the training camp stuff.

Dinkleberg, Super Chat, comes in, says, where does How Weed Roseman fit into all of this? Honestly, I think you can make a case that How Weed Roseman is the cause of whatever discontent there is between Howie and Jalen in the sense that one night he sparks up and he's like, Jalen is good, but what if we could get like Joe Burrow, dude? Oh, man, can you imagine? So I think that's how that went. Okay.

You know Howie Ed Roseman a little more intimately than I do. I would have suspected Howe Ewee-Rosman is a little bit more laid back, and maybe that makes him less, you know, panicky about Jalen and the future. But I think that's probably a good point. He's dreaming up all the possibilities. All right. Let's kick things off here.

The idea here is just we are just drafting the players that we are most excited to see come training camp. Let's get to the right people presented by our friends at True Mark Financial. No snake draft here. Just ping pong and math back and forth. You get to go first, DJ. Who are you most excited to see when camp began? I think it has to be.

Mackay Lemon, the guy on the thumbnail, the guy that we have not really seen as much of as we would have expected that by this point in the all season, he didn't really participate much in spring practices. You know, he looked good during rookie mini camp, I would say, but it's a very limited sample size. So yeah, I think Mackay Lemon, what I did for all the players that I listed here is I listed the question that I want them to answer. Okay. And I think McCoy Lemon's, a lot of these are straightforward. For him, it is, can he be the second wide receiver in that room? Can he be the third highest volume target getter in the offense behind Devante Smith and Dallas Goddard. And that's a big projection right now.

We just haven't seen very much of him. So not only what does he look like, but how is he used? I think it's going to be very instructive. And like there's actually a needle to be moved based off of how Mikhailimann looks in training camp. I totally agree. I think he's the most exciting guy to watch. And I actually do think, and shout out to Ryan, who made this point the other evening

when we were talking to him. It feels like for a first round wide receiver, there is less excitement about Mackay Lemon from the fan base than there usually is for that position. I think a lot of that is because it means that A.J. Brown is gone, and he is replacing him, and those are big shoes to fill. But usually, you know, when you draft a Jalen Rager or a Devante Smith, like everybody is like, oh, this is going to be the most exciting thing of training camp

because it's a fun position to watch. it's a guy who's supposed to make an immediate impact. And it feels like that has not fully been the case with Mikhail Lemon. He's also not coming and expecting to be the number one wide receiver. You've got Devante and maybe you're just as excited about seeing what level Devante can get to. But yeah, in terms of seeing how he fits into the offense, how he's being used. Just the very first practice we saw in the spring in the bubble where it was like he's, he is in purposeful motion on almost every snap. He's lining up in the slot, but he's moving all around.

and Gieland is throwing him the ball over the middle of the field. If that was a portend of what's to come, that's great. And I think that will be very exciting. Now, he is not the most flashy skill set player. Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. Right. And so it's not like he's going to be mossing guys down the field or running past guys necessarily.

But he's more of a technician. So how does that play out in a training camp sense? He also has to prove he can stay healthy. You know, a hamstring is not a great thing for a wide receiver. Right. There are some real questions about how he is integrated into the offense. But if he is who the Eagles think he is, he's going to be a huge part of this season, and it will all obviously begin next week.

Yeah, it's interesting you say that about the relative lack of enthusiasm. Not to say that people are pessimistic, but you're right. There's not like a hype train for Kai Lemon going into training camp. I wonder if it is because, like, you look at somebody like Jalen Rager. I mean, obviously Devante had like a historic college season that played into this. this. But otherwise, like, the Jalen Rager hype, who are some of the other guys, like Nelson Aguilar, I don't know if there was a lot of hype for Aguilar. It was, but yeah.

I feel like maybe because of the way Mikhail Lemon wins not being quite as flashy. Yeah. And also that being tied into, like, the offense has to look a certain way to really maximize him. I think, like, there needs to be a clear vision for it. Maybe there's just, like, a little bit more projection and what it has to look like for him to, like, hit his ceiling. But the thing I would say is, like, I feel like, if it was. works, Philly fans are going to love him because of what you've, what we've heard about his

toughness, about the, you know, the way that he is, you know, after the catch, you know, like that, I mean, like, people will say, like, he's got, like, that dog in him, right? Like, I think Philadelphians would be, like, crazy about that aspect of his game if we get to a point where he can really showcase that. That's right. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm, I'm very excited to just let the McCoy Lemon experience wash over me. Yeah. I mean, you know that as much as the hype hasn't really taken off. If like there are a couple of days where he like routs somebody up, which he is capable of doing, it'll start to build. There'll be, I mean, I've seen mediocre receivers get some hype in training camp as we talked about last week. I think he'll get,

he'll get a chance at it. Okay. Good stuff. Now, I'm going to do something here where, which is not what I would normally do. Okay. I am, I am excited to see Jalen Hertz this summer. We should have went the other way. I know. I would have taken Jailen here. Normally, Jaylen is like the least interesting part of training camp. That's important. But the fact that it is such a new offense, it is also the post AJ. Yeah.

Like what is his personality going to be like in camp? I'm excited to, I'm interested and curious to see what like persona he's bringing to the table. Is this the ride the golf cart with Dom and smile around? Is it all business? Yeah. You know, some combination of both. Is he, you know, spending a lot of time with Mackay Lemon off to the side?

like just just following that. And then obviously we're talking he's got a he's adding a heavy degree of under center to his repertoire. He knows everybody wants him to throw over the middle of the field. I don't care almost at all about like his completion percentages or anything like the actual on-field results. I just want to know how it looks. He's going up against a difficult defense. So it might not be pretty. the stats aren't going to matter to me at all

to the degree that there are stats but I am curious to see just what Jalen looks like this summer Can I maybe you know dredge up some hot take Tuesday stuff here? Sure. I kind of want him to throw some interceptions. Sure.

Like I want to see him take risks. Like here are the things that I will care about. Here are the things that will move the needle for me. Jalen Hertz threw an interception to Andrew McCuba on day two of cam. and separate Makuba from it. Jalen Hertz threw an interception to a linebacker or a safety in camp. I actually really don't mind that.

That's not going to mind. That's not going to Bob. Honestly, I might even find encouragement in something like that. On the contrary, Jalen Hertz had a really good day. He hit Devante Smith, Dallas Goddert, and Mackay Lemon on go balls down the sideline. Not going to move the needle for me at all. Yeah, that will not actually matter to me. Yeah, it's like, great.

That's encouraging that he could do it, but we knew that that was already something you could do. Jalen Hertz only completed three or four passes, but, you know, really struggled with the traffic in the middle of the field. I actually, like, think you're going to need to see that against a really good defense. And in this system, I do think it's going to, like, the context is going to matter

and what you hear about Jalen. So, you know, in the past, like, probably earlier in Jalen's career, if you had heard, like, Jalen Hertz just got intercepted in practice, like the social media alarm bells ring. I think, like, when you hear that, like, people out there, like, following practice,

you get the next pick. Are you excited to see? So again, what I did, and because we're doing this, if you keep taking people off the board, I'm going to be going through a lot of players who do have like question marks rather than players who,

you know, you have like a specific question you want to answer that's like, you know what player they are. And for me, Drew McCuba is the third player here. And that is a player, again, with a question mark about really something that we've talked about

I like the way you framed it where it's like, Drew McCuba is actually probably the most important safety to watch over someone like Marcus Epps for Michael Carter. I know they're competing for a job, but I think Drew McCuba is going to be the one that raises the ceiling for the safety group. You know, the floor, like we can talk about it. He might also raise the floor if he is a consistent player

based off of what we saw last year. So the Eagles are making a big bet on him being like a shorefire starter. Like, you know, he can't come in and have a shaky training camp. all of us you know then all of a sudden are we talking about Marcus Epps and Michael Carter as the first team safety so he has to pick up where he left off before he got hurt last year and this is going to be our chance to see if he can do that okay well said yeah if this was a list of the most important players in training camp I think he would be higher on the list than I have him yeah personally it just you know safeties are not necessarily always the the sexiest people to watch during camp because you can't exactly tell but all the all the reasons you said are true I think he's one of the most important players on the team this season. For me, I'm going, I'm going O-R. Oh, that's a fun.

I can't wait to see O-R. And from a few standpoints, not only are we just following and getting to witness this guy beginning to play a sport, with those insane measurables, it's also, if this goes the way we expect it to go, that O'R is going to be here for a while.

Yeah. It's like, these are going to be the flashbulbs, that we're going to look back on in our memory of, man, three years from now, remember what O'R was like his rookie training camp? Yeah. You know,

he couldn't do anything, and, and you're, like, he's getting pushed around, and he's standing straight up. You know, there's no pad level.

Yeah, whatever is. But that one time, he pushed Michael Morris back into the backfield, like, oh, and you finally have to see how strong he was.

There will be some moments like that this summer. You know, maybe there will be his version of Joe Ostman. I was just about to ask, who was his version of Joe Osstman. And it's a little bit different when you're stopping someone as opposed to running past someone. But yeah, I can't wait to see that you are. You know, when they get pads on and we actually get to see them, especially because, you know, in the spring, they're so far away.

The defensive linemen, we don't get to watch them up close as much. Yeah. That will not be the case come the summer. So I would add Josh Wiru on this list as well. I think he's being a little bit slept on because he is also a very exciting prospect. I just want to see. And let's see those guys. I'm trying to figure out who's going to be.

be his Joe Osman, who is going to be like the undrafted rookie that could just get the better of him on one play and it's like, man, like, he's got to figure this guy out. Could it be like Jaden Roberts? Like, could it be a young guy like that that just like has a moment? My other question for you is, do you think that he will get one-on-one reps early? Or do you think they'll try and hide him for a little bit? Because sometimes, like, the young guys really don't get one-on-one reps right away? You almost have to like earn a rep. I feel like they're going to want to see it. Yeah.

I think we will. Yeah. But I could be wrong. We'll see. Yeah. Yeah. I hope so. I mean,

that will be, that is like theater. That is popcorn stuff. The very first one-on-one rep of his entire life. That would be great. That really is like just a crazy thing to think about. Like the first one-on-one pass rushing rep of his life. Yeah.

We might be there to see it. Great. And you know, who knows what will happen from there? Were you there for Jordan Milottis, you think? I'm sure I was there for it. Yeah.

I don't, I don't specifically remember the first one. It's funny because the Milata experience informs that like we will probably be more like aware and sentimental about UR's experience. And that's probably, I mean, it's not an experience and it's singular to us.

It's completely unrealistic to think it goes as well as the Milata one did. Yeah, but still I think like it's funny because across the organization that probably seeps in sometimes where it's like we are going to like mark these moments because of what it could become. You know?

Like it's more. special when you know what is at least possible. I like that pick, though. I like who are as a, so I mean, we will be, we'll be watching them. Yeah, absolutely. I'm going to stay on the defensive tackle room here, and I'm going to go with Jalen Carter. He was literally next on my list. Yeah.

And my question is, are his shoulders healthy enough for him to wreck a practice? I just want to see if Jalen Carter's out there listening, you know, maybe he's, you know, winding down his vacation, getting ready for training camp and he tuned in for the show, just wreck one practice. We just want to see one practice, one team session. I'd even just take that. One team session where it's like, yeah, they couldn't get anything done because Jalen Carter was angry.

It was hot and he just decided that he wasn't in the mood for them to function today. We know he has that ability. Totally agree. He has that ability. He did not show it as much last year because of the injuries. If he's healthy enough to do it, you should feel great about how Jalen Carter will look this year. Now,

how many turkeys would you put on the possibility that Jalen Carter is kind of holding in, not really practicing at all. Yeah, that's the other big question, yeah, is whether or not he actually is going to practice. I suspect he'll practice, but as I've said, like, and I haven't heard anything to suggest otherwise at this point. I don't think that they're close on the deal. You know, maybe this is the type of thing that comes back from camp and something changes, but where they left it, like, I'm not sure that he's going to have like a day one extension, but I just, I have a hard. hard time seeing, I'm like, hold in.

It just has been so long since we've seen someone do it with the Eagles. I don't know. Do you think if there's a real chance? I think there's a possibility. Yeah, I don't know what to expect. What are, like, the recent examples in the NFL for a player like Jalen Carter to hold in? Like, I don't know. I feel like it doesn't happen as much anymore.

I feel like it happens relatively often. No? Like, in the way that Carter's going to be where he's got, I mean, he's got years left on this deal. I don't know. Maybe I'm underselling it. Maybe. I don't, I honestly, I don't know what to expect. Yeah, I mean, it was, it was the secondary question I had for Carter is like, is the extension, you know, the gap on the extension going to keep him from being at practice?

But again, it just feels like the Eagles have navigated this. Like, Zach Ertz is the last player I can think of, had like a contract or a trade thing going into camp and he was there. Maybe Jalen Carter will die his hair blonde. There you go. That would be fun. That would be fun. Maybe 25 turkeys.

You just talked me into it. That's about right? Yeah, 25 turkeys that he holds in. But I'm with you. I want to, if he's on the field, I want to see, you know, domination. Yeah. And obviously he is capable of that.

The only thing he had last year is when he hit Cam Juergens and like the earhole of his helmet. Oh, yeah. It was definitely, no, I'm with you. Yeah. But that is like when that moment, every year you're going to have a practice

or a team session where somebody gets under your skin, when that moment happens, I want to see him just wreck the entire team session. It's always fun when that happens too. It's like, I don't know. Not many people in the world can do that. Yeah. All right, I will close out this round here

with another sort of obvious pick. And that's Eli Stowers. Yeah. Second round pick. I think less of a, I know he's going to be less of an obvious inclusion in work with the first team. muffins and Mackay Lemon playing behind Dallas Goddard but you want to see the flashes you want to see

the upside you know are do we do he he is the the like it's kind of the inverse of mackay yeah where you're just kind of hoping to see and he will be splashy when he makes a a fun play let's see like four splashy players over the course of of camp and there might not be much volume to it especially with the ones but you know I want to say he goes over Cooper de jean one time and muscles him out for a ball. Yeah. Something like that. You want to see just enough to get you through to next year probably.

You know, we don't totally agree on like what he could be for them as a rookie. But in the event that he isn't a prominent member of the offense as a rookie, like you want enough plays. Like, you know, I think about Tyree Jackson, like, you know, and the few plays he had in camp.

Like, you want to see enough where you go like, all right, his second year he's going to be really good. Yeah. And I think that the blocking, matters more than the receiving

in him getting on the field. Yes. For all the reasons that Fran has talked about. But I think this summer, I want to see the receiving more because I want to see, we all know that the blocking

needs to improve. Yeah. Is the receiving stuff good enough that it looks like it can really be a difference maker there so that if he just gets to the floor as a blocker, he can stay on the field

and be a real interesting piece in the offense. I think this is another player that can actually like increase or decrease how confident you feel about the team because it is one of the few positions on defense that you have a question mark at, at least in theory. And I think the thing that I always like to remind people of whenever we talk about

Jehad Campbell is that it's not that he lost his job because of poor play or that he was struggling. He's playing really well as a rookie. And the question that I think he has to answer this summer is can he restore that upward trajectory? Can he continue to be, you know, can he continue to leverage the physical advantages that he has? Can he continue to do things that other linebackers simply just can't do because of those physical traits? And then can he supplement that with like consistent play and, you know, really taking the next step in Vic Fangio system. And if he can, like, I think that that makes this defense even more, even higher on the list of like the elite defenses in the NFL because of what it allowed.

you to do with him and Zach Bonn as too versatile inside linebacker. I thought he looked awesome last summer. Yeah. Yeah, you know, which you don't often get to see a linebacker really flash in training camp. I thought it looked great. If there was another level to that, we also should say that he's coming off of this shoulder injury. So how ready is he?

Is he, you know, is he on the shelf for the first week of camp? And then it's a limited participant. And so it's really like two or three weeks before he's a full participant. That would be a little bit disappointing, I think. So he's an important player from like a training camp, storyline narrative standpoint, but also more importantly for the reasons you said, I think he is a huge factor in how good this defense can be. Yeah, like now I'm very quickly cruising through like the top linebackers in the NFL that ESPN put out. Like I, I, who was number one on that list?

To me, you know, there's the first AJ Brown training camp where he did really, you know, he had a dominant summer. I always think back to the Deshawn Jackson training camps when I first started covering the team. the guy is just unguardable. Even the Deshawn training camp, the first year he came back. Yeah.

He was sort of dominant that year. Yep. Still wasn't stretching either. Devante is not always necessarily like that because of the way that he wins. But, you know, if this is a, it's an interesting one because I would kind of hope that the dispersion of passes in the summer

is different than it is in the season. During the season, I kind of want DeVante to get 70% of the targets or something crazy. Sure. Make him the engine of the offense. But you want the summer to be spent having Jalen throw it to everybody else. Yeah, I think that's fair. So anyway, I'm curious to see.
