Well, hello there.
Everybody, how you doing?
And welcome to the P.HLY Eagles podcast,
Bo Wolf and Brandon Lee Gouten,
live from the Xfinity Studio and presented by
Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL.
BLG, how you doing?
Thanks for joining me on a Wednesday.
Bo, doing great.
It does feel a little funny to be sitting this close to you now
when I'm used to doing the Friday show and I'm over here.
Oh, yeah.
So, you know, you know, we've done a couple like this.
Yeah, it's true, but it's been a while.
Yeah, I like her hat.
Thank you.
I mean, fired up about the Sixers.
I mean, let's just talk about the Sixers in this whole episode, huh?
I really wish.
I'll just be listening to the P.H.O.I. Sixers crew instead, I suppose.
It was so fun.
That's great.
I was telling B.G.
On Unblocked, which everybody can watch.
So my daughter, we went to the last Friday night's preseason game, and she was, like, so into it.
Like, every basket.
I love it.
Like, they're, like, cheering free throws.
It was very fun.
And then last night,
watches the first half,
gets up this morning,
and, like,
just wants to watch the highlights.
Yeah.
Sitting there at the breakfast counter,
watching it was so fun.
It was great.
It was fun.
It was nice to be reminded
of that sports,
rooting for your favorite sports team
can be a fun time in Philadelphia.
I know that,
um,
some people are like,
it's so,
uh,
it's kind of an out of body thing to see LeBron playing for the Sixers.
What is weird to me is it,
it feels very natural.
Yeah.
It's like,
maybe just because I'm so used to watching LeBron play.
that it doesn't feel that weird,
but it's like, oh yeah, there he is.
It is a little surreal.
I caught myself thinking that during the game.
I really loved the clip of him and seeing live,
seeing a live.
Yeah, I think that's great.
You like that?
Yeah, I think he's locked in from game one.
I love to see that.
And I also think it's very Philadelphia of him
to be yelling at a New Yorker.
So, yeah, I loved everything.
Everything made me feel that end of third quarter,
Jordan Brown shot where the Sixers get the ball back because the Knicks
overthrow the inbound pass that's like a that's never a play the Sixers have made in
the entire history of the franchise yeah and will they sub both of those guys in just
for that one play drop drop something nice by the way that is that how the rule works
on the because it happened after the shot clock violation it's not when the ball
lands it's when if there is a shot clock violation it just goes to the 24 second
because when they were when they were initially looking at the review and giving the
ball to the Celtics. It looked like they were like a second off because the ball,
Max's air ball doesn't land out of bounds until like 0.6 seconds. Yeah. Yeah,
I wasn't sure about that. That was a weird one. I might not just know the rule, but yeah,
worked out. But exciting times for the sixers. For the sixers. Less so for the Philadelphia Eagles.
So BLJ, tell me we haven't talked to you since the post game show on Sunday night.
We've learned more since then on the Jalen Hertz front. What's your overarching thought on where
we are now? Isn't it crazy?
There was a game on Sunday.
Crazy.
Like doesn't feel like that.
Like that instantly went away.
It doesn't even feel it's,
it's Dallas week.
Usually people are excited.
Like,
yeah,
I can't wait.
Completely second banana.
And that's been the theme of the season.
It's like,
it's not about looking up to,
or it's not in week focusing on the game as much as it's like,
oh,
Lane Johnson's retiring or Cam Juergens is getting traded or Lane and Dickerson is getting
that stuff that was like months ago.
Yeah,
yeah,
it's crazy.
But when it comes to Jalen,
I mean, like everyone else, just hope he's okay.
Seems to be good signs from what we're hearing on that.
In terms of how everything was handled,
there's so much we don't know.
Yeah, I know.
If I was a fan, I would be angry about this too.
But we don't know.
It's hard for me to believe that they would have intentionally put him in
sure, like a dangerous situation.
And I'm sure that.
that he had his own say in those things.
But just because there wasn't malice
doesn't mean that they didn't do anything wrong.
Correct.
And there are feelings involved.
Even if things are handled correctly,
like you've talked about this with Jalen,
like he could feel some kind of way,
his family, which I understand,
his family are people close to him.
You know, I'm sure they feel a certain kind of way.
It's weird because there's been the question of,
is it a good thing that it doesn't seem like a good thing that the team and the agent are putting out a statement together
I think that's overstated I agree I definitely agree with that I mean I think it's better than not at all but I don't really I also think it's like that's kind of yeah like table stakes given what's going on right and then you have the NFL come out yesterday or at least the reporting on it being like we concluded everything was above crazy yeah nothing to see here and then you have the NFL come out yesterday or at least the reporting on it being like we concluded everything was above
crazy yeah nothing to see here and then
And the NFLPA, rightfully so, is like, well, not so fast.
Maybe let's actually.
And to their point, I mean, if nothing has been untoward here,
then we should have more transparency.
What's there to hide?
Sure.
Yeah.
And I think it would have been nice if Nick wasn't just let out there to dry
on that press conference on Monday.
If they had somebody who was a little bit more of an expert there,
I know that they can't just give away a person's speech.
specific medical diagnosis, but they can go through what the process was like.
We're speaking generalities.
They've done that.
They've leaked it to other national reporters.
Why can't they just come out and own that and say that?
Right.
It is a difficult thing.
It's not, this is a specific instance, but in this world, the team doctors, you know,
their primary operation is not the long-term health of the human being, right?
It's get, it's, can this person get on the field?
I'm not saying that that's what's going on right.
This situation, but there, the incentives are not.
Yes.
Yes.
And the NFL pushed back on that idea yesterday, at least from what I saw from that
past conference that like, oh, that never happens.
Come on.
It can't be, it's just, again, it's just the natural incentive like you're talking about.
So, and that's why you see.
I guess a lot of players typically get second, third opinions on things.
man it's just what a mess i can't again i can't believe we're here i can't believe we're entering week
seven and the quarterback is out for the season well and it's also like you know we talked so long
about how there was a real chance there's a possibility this was jelan's last season with the eagles
i hope this is not how it ends that would be very sad obviously i think even if like you're skeptic
like that'll be sad like right like even if you're like i have doubts about jelan hurts this future
You don't want to see it end like this.
He won Super Bowl MVP.
Like this is one of the,
he's the best quarterback in franchise history.
It can't end where he's just suddenly not around anymore forever because of this whole
and God forbid like you talked about he can never play again.
Hopefully that's not the case.
But oh man,
it's really disheartening and sad to see.
And we talked about this with BG2 and earlier this week.
But it is a particular.
particularly almost like Greek tragedy of there's there's no one who you know is more eaten up by not being able to be on the field for not even like a you know like a broken leg or something like that but like something in their blood then Jalen hurts.
This was I think it was talked about where the Sabin clip about like who's going to tell Jalen.
Yeah.
That he's getting bent or Brian Dayless.
Do you think the doctors had that same conversation?
I mean, who is that?
Who's the person being like,
Jalen, actually, you can't play.
I mean, that can't be easy to tell him that.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's true.
Super chats early on here.
And make sure you're hitting that like button.
Dingleberg, Dinkleberg,
BLG, absolutely goaded hoodie.
That's right.
Why don't you describe it for the audio listeners?
Oh yeah, the audio listeners.
This is a Circa survive,
a Doylestown-based, Philly area, based band.
that did a collab with some kind of Eagles
theming on the hoodie.
So, yeah. Shout out to Dink, who I saw at a Circus Survive concert
back in September. Absolutely.
Yeah, he went to, they had like a three-night run.
He went to every single night.
So shout to Dink.
The Dinkman.
Yeah, dedicated.
Dinkman, he's outside.
Yes, he is.
Pat Fienis, if I had a nickel for every time since 2016,
the Eagles ruined a relationship with their quarterback.
I'd only have two nickels, but it's weird.
It happened twice.
Yeah.
Yes, there are some things.
I don't think that they're entirely unrelated.
Yes.
I think there are some thematic issues and commonalities,
not identical situation, Carson and Jalen,
but there are certain things and certain ways the organization operates
that I think creates that environment.
Yeah, I think there is.
is a fundamental, like,
there's a fundamental like, is this the best that we can do
in everything in the building?
Yeah. Right?
Which relates to the quarterback and you know,
the job of a lot of people in the building
is to evaluate those questions,
but there is a messiness that comes along with that
that doesn't necessarily need to be there
that I think is part of the issue.
And some of that,
is what has made the team so great, right?
In terms of the pressure, we talk,
you talk about that a lot.
That's where I don't necessarily agree.
You don't think it has to be like that.
There are people in the building
who would think that that is the case.
Yes.
That the messiness is fundamental
to the drive for greatness.
And I think you can talk to other people
who have maybe been in the building
but also been in other buildings
who would tell you what a breath of fresh air
is to be somewhere else where it's not always like that.
And yet everybody is still pushing for the same thing.
Fair to say.
And I think it's always important to remember
there are different people
in the organization pulling in different directions
or have different interests.
Yes.
I mean, plain to see.
Jeffrey Larry loves Jalen Hertz.
Yeah.
That is not questioned at all.
Yeah.
Does Howie or Roseman feel the same exact way?
I don't know.
I don't think so.
I'm sure he loves Jailin a lot.
Yeah, did you see the,
I think it was in the ESPN report
about how,
yes.
Howie was,
I guess,
in the hospital?
Yes.
He was dealing,
the Hertz camp was very impressed.
Yes,
hands-on.
With Howie during that time.
Yeah,
and I'm not,
I don't want to make it seem like
how he hates Dailen
because I don't,
I don't think that's the case at all.
But it's also how he's job
to be more discerning where like,
yeah,
is like, that's,
you know,
it's our quarterback.
I love the guy.
Yeah.
Where Howie Roseman is like,
I need to set us up for success
over a multi-year span
or else I'm getting fired.
CDP was a super chat.
If the Eagles hadn't spent
the summer alienating Jalen,
is it possible?
that he would have sought treatment earlier in week five.
I get the impetus to ask that question.
I think probably Jalen is just wired that way
that he didn't think it was a thing
until it was definitely a thing.
Yeah, and it's still weird
that we can't really totally find when it happened.
The professor put out a clip.
And had noted that Adam Schefter was doing a news hit.
It said it could have happened in the Bears game.
And I don't know if it was the Schefterer miss speaking
or what, but yeah, there's mention of the Bears game
and the professor thought he might have found a moment
when it happened there, but still inconclusive.
Yeah.
All right.
Time to take our first break on the P.HL.

ahead of the Monday night game against a Cowboys team

All right, we are back on the PHY Eagles show.
Welcoming in Mina Khimes of the Minakime show featuring Lenny and of ESPN.
And Mina, are you, do we have you coming to Philly this week?
Can't wait.
Tell me, what's the weather like?
Because I was prepared for it to be cold, but then I just looked at the temperature and it actually
looks pretty nice.
Oh, it's like beautiful fall right now.
We get like two weeks of perfect fall weather between, you know, late summer and early
winter.
And right now you're getting, you're getting a good little window.
Can't wait.
Can't wait for this game.
Yeah.
Can you?
Uh, yeah.
Well, you know, Tanner McKee, it'll never get easier for you than this.
So maybe, you know, things.
Well, why don't we start there then?
Let's try to build this up before we bring it down.
How bad is the Cowboys defense?
What's going on there?
My bad.
I should have, what is the Spanish word for bad?
Nebue.
No, Bueno is good.
Mal?
Malo. Molo. Molo. I was bad at French, so that's not helping you.
Yeah. I mean, it looks a little bit improved, I guess, last week, but it's pretty bad.
It's not good at anything. Like, you kind of slice it up a bunch of different ways, trying to find stuff that they can kind of hang their hat on.
And there's just issues across the board. So this is, what is it, when a movable object meets a...
Yeah, the object of no resistance.
force, soft, I don't know, whatever.
In any case, it's a great opportunity for McKee to get something going.
Obviously, some guys came back into the lineup.
And then, you know, on the other side of the ball, the Cowboys defense is also
run into, or offense, pardon me, which I think before the season, very high expectations,
and there's been flashes of top five play.
But I think, I know Eagles fans do not like praising Jonathan Gannon in any way.
But I do think you can put on the tape from last week, and there's a lot.
that Fangio and this defense, which has been playing well,
can replicate against this Cowboys offense.
So you could keep this closer than maybe it would seem.
Okay, I want to let's let's like, let's do a few more minutes on this matchup
because it's like the least interesting thing happening to the team right now.
But let's stay there.
Yeah, Cowboys, Cowboys offense, I guess.
Where can you get after them?
What were the things that Gannon did?
Yeah, they had a lot of trouble with his pressures.
You know, blitzed DAC pretty heavily.
And when I think about DAC, I usually think of a quarterback.
He's fairly surgical against the blitz.
But I think some of the things he did, particularly on early downs,
almost seemed to take Dallas by surprise a little bit.
And it's sort of a trend around the NFL, sort of the Brian Flores effect,
we can call it that.
These early down pressures were saying people blitzing play action,
which is less successful.
Obviously, the Eagles are pretty aware of that.
And I think just kind of playing with their rules in terms of past protection
and felt like DAC was never comfortable.
And then the Packers, again, behind it,
played a lot of zone and did a good job of taking away his hots too.
So, you know, if you told me before the season
that Packers would win, what was it, 23 to 13 or something, I forget,
like I never would have thought that's how it would have played out.
But, yeah, this Cowboys offense,
even with those two-by receivers, definitely has some issues.
All right.
Let's talk, let's talk Eagle's big picture.
Let's start with this.
If you are Howie Roseman,
you surveyed the scene,
the NFC East is obviously very getable,
but you don't have Jill and Hertz for the season.
You've got all these other injuries.
It's potentially a chance to sell.
How would you approach the next month or so?
Yeah, I'd sell.
Because winning the division is kind of pointless
for the long-term goals of,
honestly, you can say this about.
a number of teams. But, you know, even if you somehow get out of this Godforsaken division,
this is in a team that's built right now to make a run. I don't think any of the NFC teams are,
by the way. And I think with McKee, it's interesting, right, because you've seen like,
oh, early in his career, you had some flashes of great play. But the situation is bad now.
And I think for Philadelphia, the priority should be improving that situation, particularly
offensive line, amassing as much draft capital as you can get so that next season you can attack
that extremely aggressively.
So offensively, you know, I think there are fewer options than on defense in terms of
people you could trade.
I mentioned Dantavian Wicks on NFL Live.
And some of that, too, is not just about the fact that there's a lot of wide receiver
needy teams.
And I think he's really, you know, proven himself to be quite a, like a wide receiver
too in this league, honestly.
But, you know, you also need to get more out of Mackay Lemon and make, you know,
his development a priority this season.
So,
and he's on a one-year contract, of course, right?
So I think for Philadelphia,
that's somebody that I would look to move off of.
And then defensively,
I think,
you know, the players
Ben and I got into on our podcast that came up
were a Jomo, Wulin,
and
some of those fans were like, we're going to get compics for,
I always get a little bit wary of trying to play that game,
honestly.
Of course, it comes down to what you're getting.
You don't want to trade Morojomo for like a late round pick, obviously,
but you have to really do that calculus.
And that's a player where obviously you paid your defensive tackle,
so he's probably not going to get the big contract.
And then Wollin, I just think there's a good chance you can get someone to really overpay,
given the state of secondaries on some competitive teams around the league.
I'm with you on almost all of those.
Yeah, I think Wollin, for sure.
I mean, it's a guy you signed knowing it was a one-year deal anyway.
Yeah.
You might as well try to flip him.
OJMO, as you said, there's no way they're going to pay a third defensive tackle.
I do think, you know, they would play the compic game with him and it could get as high as a third.
But you take the bird in the hand on that if you can get a third or even a fourth
because then you don't have to worry about the comp pick calculus.
And I do also think there's a risk of does his market value sink if this is a bad team?
And, you know, he gets sucked into it.
it being an underperforming defense.
What do you think about Sequin?
So I have mentioned Sequin, and I'm not a reporter,
but a couple of people, not in the Egos organization, to be clear,
suggested to me that that wasn't happening.
I would do it.
So I guess I should have mentioned him,
because I should be talking about what I would do,
especially, again, given his contract,
the fact that, you know, I think the run game has been so bad.
And the Eagles have been kind of exhibit A for a good running back can't solve everything.
And I think just all hands on deck have to go to fixing this offensive line next year.
So I would definitely consider it, especially, not to be like, annoying about it,
but it really is all in what kind of offer you get.
But I'll tell you what, there's a few teams around the league that do really need running back.
So that's another position where I think you
You can definitely get a decent return for him
So I would definitely do it
I think I think for that one
Howie doesn't call other GMs he just calls John Mara
And says
Give me that first
The hell is going on there man with the running backs
You see JJ McCarthy's going to start against Houston
He is I didn't know that they just announced
Just broke crazy wild
They might win the division with six wins
part of this is for the Eagles also as they're as they're juggling those things is evaluation and
I think the person that they really need to evaluate is Sean Mannion and boy has it been ugly
I want to play a little game here where I'm going to just run you down things where the Eagles
rank 30 second in the league okay and you tell me how much it matters and how I guess how much
faith you have that they're going to turn it around you mentioned running the ball 30
32nd in the league and rushing success rate at 38%.
Jeez.
That doesn't feel like it's going to get better.
It's not a scheme thing.
It's an offensive line thing.
But it's also, it's not,
it's not all the way,
not a scheme thing, I think.
What would you do?
Yeah.
Well, this is more of a McKee thing and less of a running thing,
but like there is a bit of a stubbornness about the way,
you know,
get to they're they're dead last in success rate in under center and under center play action and
those ones are like they're like a full standard deviation away from even 30.
Right.
It's it's crazy how bad they are at that stuff.
So that one is a little bit of a that one's more on the play collar not to jump ahead,
I think.
Right.
That's part of a trend.
I alluded to this around the league where you're seeing more and more.
We talked to this in NFL Live defenses around the league very aggressively blitzing under
center play action, particularly.
out of condensed formations.
By the way, this is something
that the ramps are struggling with.
And that's not, that's their, you know,
I think that's their MO.
Right.
That's their MO.
They used the most play action in the NFL last year.
They were deadly with it.
And I do think that one,
the play caller has to come up with some solutions for it,
whether it's, you know,
keeping more bodies in to block it up
or finding ways to punish teams when they do that,
whether it's, you know,
throws to the flat or working over the middle of the field,
which should be something that Tanner McKee can do.
So that one I would put a little bit more on Mannion.
Yeah, it's, I recognize fully that this is a really difficult problem to have to solve,
given all the injuries they've had and, you know, the quarterback situation.
But I think he was brought here to implement this offense specifically.
And they're a little bit too bullheaded and making sure this is the offense that we're going to run
and not exactly adjusting on a, on a week-by-week basis to who you have and what they can do well.
Yeah.
So part of it.
And McKee's such a different quarterback.
So this is, it's both a test and an opportunity for Mannion.
Yes.
I'll give you a few more.
This is, this could be one of the solves for that.
But 32nd in the league in EPA per play on passes to the running backs.
It's been a multi-year issue with Philadelphia, which is kind of interesting, right?
There was something that I hoped Mannion would be good at or at least improve upon because it's something that Green Bay has.
done very well.
And short passes in general and getting yards after the catch, effective screen game.
It's the little bit tricky there because I think part of the reason why they're so bad at it is
it's really not about the quarterbacks.
It's about the way defenses play this team.
It's about the lack of blockers on screens in particular and some of the short passes,
which makes it very effective.
So I got to put a little bit of that one on Howie, man, in terms of.
like the build of the offense, but that does feel like something may you should be able to do more of.
This is one where at least, you know, you can, they've lost four running backs. I can.
Yeah, that's, you can excuse that a little bit. This is a little bit of a maybe too thin a sliver,
but 32nd in the league and second down success rate. You know, they keep trying to play on schedule
and they are incapable of doing that. And then speaking of multi-year issues, this is the craziest one.
their success rate on offense in the third quarter, Mina.
31st in the league is at 35%.
They're 32nd at 17% 17% success rate in the third quarter,
as Shil would break down.
The difference between 32 and 31 is the same as the distance between 31st and fourth in the league.
17% is insane for those you don't know in terms of success rate.
That's six whole quarters of football.
That's terrible.
That's wild.
And you got to put some of that in the play caller because coming out of the half, you know,
just the inability to make adjustments or perhaps you're making it even worse somehow.
You know, they've gone three and out on their opening possession of the second half in all six games this season.
That's crazy.
Wow.
Jeez, Louise.
I didn't know Zapp.
I guess I didn't know what that bad.
But like that's wild.
It's wild.
Oh, yeah.
So all of that is to say, let's see them come out and try to do something a little bit different this week.
The, you know, I think we were a little disappointed that it looked so similar last week with a different quarterback.
But I think we can try to give them some grace that it was a change that happened midweek.
Now you know what you've got.
You've got an extra day to prepare.
I think it will be really telling if they don't come out trying to do something a little bit different.
You've been giving all these stats that Dallas or permanent Philadelphia ranks 37.
I can give you a million that Dallas ranks third second in on defense, right?
I think actually, it's funny you mentioned 17% because that's the Dallas defense has a 17% success rate when teams throw to tight ends.
I remember I pulled that last week.
Oh, well, I got bad news for you about the Eagles tight ends, you know, although Dallas got her back.
He's, you know, that's real.
Yeah, the Dallas, okay, so just to kind of like, why are they so bad?
They play a lot of zone defense.
They're very bad at it.
There's a bunch of space in the defense.
guys can't they can't handle motion so all right you know manion let's see what you got in that regard
um in terms of coverage they're very easily like they deron blent they're very they struggle with
speed um so there's so many things you can pick at with this defense the linebackers can't cover
pass rush is not good it's not i wouldn't say that's the worst part of the defense by any means
but you have enough time to pick on all these things that i'm talking about in zone coverage so
like I said this should look better than it has yeah well it can't look worse I mean really you got
it like the blitzes that was the thing watching the Carolina game like it it is hard week after
week to watch this offense struggle to pick up but then the same types of blitzes in terms of the
overload like it's you really need to come up with some solutions to that as a play caller yeah
All right.
We would not be doing our,
our YouTube clip farming due diligence
if we did not ask you about Jalen Hertz
and your thoughts, I guess,
on everything that has happened
over the past week.
I mean, what do you make it all?
Yeah.
Didn't love being asked or on Monday having,
like, I didn't have to,
but like trying to weigh in
on the difference between a superficial blood clot
and deep vein thrott.
I mean, it's like not a position
any of us should be in.
Right. I'm like texting the the doctors I know in my life for like, hey, what can you tell me about blood class?
I mean, I think there's two real questions, right? One of the initial decision to clear him to travel, I think just like everyone, it seems like that was pretty normal from what I understand by medical standards. But I think that's a question everyone has because obviously it escalated so dramatically. So just kind of revisiting that conversation and everybody agreeing upon it and the medical standards for that. And then I think the other question is just kind of.
like when he got to London, those, what transpired, you know, the initial reports of not being,
I think when the initial reports from certain reports came out and said, doctors told him not to sleep,
everyone had the same reaction, which is a human, forget medical, forget football reaction,
which is if you're being told you can't sleep, you probably shouldn't play in a football game, right?
Like, this just seems like common sense.
Now that's kind of been walked back a little bit.
So I think that my only other question is like, did that happen?
And if so, who knew about it and made the decision?
So those are kind of like the two inflection points that I probably have some questions about.
I think I don't want to be too quick to jump to conclusions the way I think I've seen a little bit in terms of what people knew and what constitutes medical malpractice and all of that.
But I think just from a common sense perspective, that is what I personally want to know.
Yeah.
I mean, my understanding is he was not told he couldn't sleep.
I think it was more that it was like a he was in the hospital until 4 a.m. getting this stuff diagnosed.
And so he, you know, he wasn't getting a lot of sleep.
Yeah.
And then he did, it seems like.
Okay.
Well, he got a little bit at the stadium, right?
And if they didn't diagnose it until Saturday, that explains why he was on the first flight to begin with.
If you're allowed to play with a superficial blood clot, okay, I get it.
And, you know.
You are.
You are.
And then what are they going to, was he going to take a boat home?
Is he going to stay in London for six weeks?
Like, I don't know.
You know.
Yeah, no, I think, I think it was that report that was kind of like the dynamite, right?
Because everything else, people were like, well, I don't know a lot about how this all works.
And that came out and it was such like a violation of common sense that it's apparent violation of common sense.
I want to say, like not a clear one, that immediately everybody's hackles got.
raised and then now it's like okay well what actually happened there and what actually you know
what is what is almost not not crazier because the fact that he played with this is is is is nuts
but it's so weird that he they they come home this is obviously something you're thinking okay
they got to like really be monitoring this any practices fully on wednesday anyway uh like you
would have thought that then okay now let's really get to the bottom of this yeah but that's a
great point i didn't think about the aftermath in terms of that timeline as well as is is really
You know, it's always tricky with, and this has been long documented, with team doctors and players, the obvious conflicts of interest of, or, you know, every, and that doesn't even mean saying to something there's a conflict of interest doesn't necessarily mean people are violating it. It just exists, right?
Sure.
Like, you're, it is the equivalent of like, if your boss determine whether you got sick days. It's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just baked into the NFL. So they are, they're, yeah, they're, they're number one.
job is to make sure that it is okay for you to play.
Right.
And not whether you should, right?
And there are many examples throughout NFL history of the doctors, you know, not necessarily
doing what's in the best interest of the players.
I don't think that necessarily means that's what happened here.
But I understand why people are asking questions given that inherent conflict.
And there's also a difference between, you know, uh, malice and just,
a mistake or or maybe yeah or maybe a mistake maybe not yeah I do not think that the um
or just precautions I guess yeah right more yeah so I don't know I seriously doubt anyone involved
wanted to put his life I think that would be I think um that's safe to say yeah all right
it is yeah a weird word one for sure uh well Mina every every two weeks something very bizarre
happens and then we get to talk to about it so I I can't wait to see what it
is the trade deadline is next time oh okay yeah so that's so hopefully okay get some action what's the
what is the craziest thing that could happen the eagles trade nick syriani like what
how we trades himself i i think i don't think any of the players i mentioned i think sequin
at this point would be pretty stunning yeah not from a like i said i would do it but i think
from what i've heard that would be pretty surprising and that would obviously be a massive
tectonic.
Nolan Smith is another one to keep.
I heard that.
Yeah.
But they're like, well, you know, they like Dr.
Grinard.
Okay.
He hasn't played football.
So I guess that would say something about their comfort level with his health.
Yeah.
If they were to do that.
But that would be my concern in question there with a Nolan Smith trade.
I think it's more about if they're not going to pick up his option, they want to sign Jalick's
hunt instead of him.
Is that what they do?
And they're paying Grenard, as you said.
So who's to say?
Yeah, I don't know.
All right.

Welcome back to the P.HL.U.S. Podcast, Bow and BLG.
Thanks again to Mina Kimes.
Rest and peace to the jump to conclusions, Matt guy.
We're here.
And it's time for Wawa Wednesday.
Presented by, you guessed it.
Wednesday. And voila. Here's what we're gonna do.
It's December 21st, the shortest day of the year.
Two months from today or when we last were in the studio.
The Eagles have turned it around.
They are clearly the class of the NFC East.
They're headed to the playoffs. They look like they got a real shot to maybe make some noise.
noise in the playoffs.
How did they get there?
You start.
Well, let me tell you, the Eagles offense got healthier and they started to use a little bit
more shotgun, which Tanner McKee seemed to have some success with against the
Panthers, and they really took that and we're like, oh, we're building on that.
We saw something there that we felt really good about, and all of a sudden we see Tanner
McKee looking like, they.
guy that we saw in the past, which made him a Bull Wolf training camp crush, one of the
core four.
Classic.
The preseason in these late regular season games.
And part of what has propelled this Eagles offense as well.
And I think Lindsay has a graphic on this is that they are facing one of the easier schedules
in the NFL when it comes to the remaining defenses that they will be playing.
So the schedule lightens up a little bit for them and they take advantage.
Okay.
They have a question.
Yes.
I mean, I know the answer because I'm with you, but if I were back two months ago,
when you say that they have kind of rejiggered the offense,
they're leaning into the shotgun, was that Sean Mannion's doing?
Or was that with heavy involvement from the head coach or other people?
Well, I think entering week seven, the Eagles were really feeling a lot of pressure
and feeling like they needed to change it up
and they felt like Tanner McKee,
you're giving him the full week of practice now
as opposed to last week where Jalen Hart's practicing on Wednesday
and then Tanner has to come in.
They're like, all right, now this is a reset.
We're ahead of a Monday night game.
We really need to change things up.
Nick Siriani was talking about how everything's on the table
and that's what prompted the change.
Okay.
So a little bit of collaboration,
but Mannion maybe.
grew into his play-calling pants a little bit.
He was feeling the pressure a bit
and they felt like they had to do something different.
Okay.
Yeah, I think I can buy that.
I think health is a real thing as well.
Sequin, when he's been healthy this season,
has looked good.
As we talked about with Mina,
they've got the worst rushing success rate in the league.
I think if you get enough guys back on the offensive line,
you get a little bit of continuity
and you get Sequin healthy
they can be a fine running team
I think yes this is all about them
leaning into the strengths of the guys
they have on offense
let's get the ball to Devante
put Tanner McKee in shotgun
and then those other guys can do enough
and you talked about
offensive line continuity in there
I mean back at this time in October
the Eagles were
having two games in a row
the same starters.
For the very first time.
Big.
Now you don't want that
because you want Drew Kendall back
instead of Jake Majors,
which seems like that did happen
in the past.
And then they got Lennon Dickerson back
and he looked,
you know,
not like his Pro Bowl self,
but he provided some competence.
Absolutely.
So I think that and Mark Tell Bell
kind of getting his legs under him a little bit
with some more starting experience,
feeling a bit more comfortable.
I think the offensive line jelled a little bit more.
Mm.
In my reality, what happened is Lane Johnson came back.
Okay.
Jalen Hertz came back.
And the Eagles traded for Kellynne Moore.
Oh.
To become a new offensive coordinator.
And then they just ran that band back together.
What did they give up for Kellan Moore?
Johnson and trade.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
No, I think on offense, the path is,
Can they get to 20th in the league-ish, right?
You know, they're not turning the ball over a ton.
If they can continue to do that and move the ball a little bit
and maybe not be the worst third quarter offense in the history of the NFL,
you know, that might help a little bit.
I think the path to them being like a respectable division winner
is the defense turning into a top three unit.
And I think I probably have more faith.
This is so stupid.
I think I probably have more faith
than the offense turning from 32nd to 20th
than I do in this defense becoming the third best events in the league.
I don't think that's stupid
because the bar is lower, right?
It's more attainable in theory.
Now, the tough part about the schedule,
we just showed up there is that they
are facing tougher offenses. That is the
downside of the coin. So it's not
necessarily like the defense
things might get better for them. That is
the downside there.
I think on defense
okay, Jonathan Ginnard
gets healthy. Looks like the player that they thought
he was. Jalick's Hunt
comes back in a couple
weeks. Jalen
Carter plays like he played against
the Jaguars and that in is a
world destroying force and completely changes
the face of the defense and they get some positive turnover regression.
Yes.
Yeah, I think some of that has been unlucky.
I do.
I don't think it's just that they don't have playmakers.
They do.
They absolutely have some guys who are capable of taking the ball away on this team.
So I think they have been a little bit unlucky there.
I think maybe Jalick's hunt looks like the player we saw in training camp.
Like if that's how the defense is going to have some kind of sea change and big boost for that unit,
I think that plus Jalen Carter plus Jonathan Ginnard maybe getting healthy at some point.
I mean, he was a really good player when he was healthy in the past.
Is he that player anymore?
You don't think so?
I've just, that was like two years ago.
Well, yes, it's not guaranteed they'll get to that level.
But I do think it's, to me, it's different from Bryce Hoff because I've seen that comparison.
And to me, I don't think Bryce Huff was really ever that good.
He had one nice season in a contract.
year for a very bad Jets defense, whereas Gernard had more consistent year over year production
than someone like Bryce Lov did.
Yeah, I agree with that, but it could still turn out to be a really bad move.
It could.
Yeah.
Especially if it doesn't get healthy, which seems like that could just be a problem this year.
Close the book on Wawa Wednesday.
The other crazy thing that people aren't going to know from two months ago is that
Bo Wolf won a game of quarterback.
Crazy. Wow.
Yeah.
Fantastic.
He was the best bubble quarterback, right?
Well, best is more subjective.
Okay.
Most accomplished?
Most winningest quarterback.
Right.
Yeah.
I don't want, you know, Alex Zirkel's out there somewhere.
Those were toe to toe.
Anybody could get it the next week situations.
two players playing at the top of the game.
You know, one week you might say he had it.
One week you might say I had it, but I didn't win more games.
Another thing in this, sorry, there's no natural pivot from that.
Another thing is this next three week stretch, things could look a lot different.
If, a big if, things go right for the Eagles here where it's three straight division games.
And if they do that, they're four and oh in the division games this year.
which is like, that's a good place to be when it comes to trying to.
I see what you're saying.
Yeah.
Because they'd be Washington.
So they'd have the sweep over Washington.
Well, yeah.
If they win three games in a row,
we're going to feel differently about the team.
I agree with that.
Absolutely.
But I'm saying it's just like, it's not three games.
They're four and a half point underdogs on Monday night.
Of course.
Yeah, no,
I'm just outlining,
again,
I'm just doing the scenario where we're assuming it did happen.
I'm not saying my current confidence level.
But you also look within those three weeks for the other NFCE's teams.
and just how things could look different in the standings in this time.
The Giants play the Texans in Houston and they have their buy.
And then I wrote down Giants again, but that's not right because the Giants do not play themselves.
But the Cowboys have the Eagles, obviously.
They play the Cardinals who aren't good, but that is a team I'm familiar with Cowboys feeling about that team.
That's like a team that's kind of had their number.
Oh, interesting.
know the Cardinals have been good.
You think back to last year.
I think it was a Sunday night game, something like that.
They're scared of the Cardinals.
That's funny.
Who just beat the Rams, by the way.
And then they get at Indy.
And the commanders have their buy this week.
They play the Eagles.
We're assuming in this scenario the Eagles beat them.
Then they get the Rams, who I think are going to turn it around a little bit.
I don't think the Rams are this bad.
So there is a world where the division looks like in this not super realistic feeling right now.
state where the Eagles are
that they're 5 and 4
the Giants are something like 3, 4 and 1
the Cowboys could be like 2 and 7, 3 and 6
if you want to say they split the non-egals game
and the commanders are all the way down at the division
at the bottom at 1 6 and 1.
Does that feel amazing?
No, but does it feel better than now?
Yeah.
I feel really like
the game on Monday night is going to tell me everything I need to know.
I agree.
If they come out and look the same on Monday night,
pack it up.
Yeah.
The season is over.
It doesn't matter.
Like, you know,
you want to evaluate some young players,
trade whoever you want.
If they can come out and look like a different team on Monday night
with the extra day,
with the understanding that they've got different personnel
and they've really made some changes.
Okay.
Give them a little bit of a runway.
And, you know,
maybe if you got it,
you can go win three division games in a row.
Sure, that's interesting.
Mm-hmm.
But if they come out and look the same on Monday night,
that's it.
I agree.
Make sure you keep watching every episode.
Even though I'm ruling out the season.
I think we're being fair.
I think we're giving them grace when we're saying like,
because I think we're already at the point where things are not looking good.
And it's hard to feel confident.
Yeah.
But I kind of do have a feeling they might win on Monday night.
I do.
I think there could be something to,
obviously Jalen was already out for the last game,
but there's something different to he's out for this season.
Yeah, I agree.
And the magnitude of that.
And maybe the team rallies around that.
And maybe like,
we said, Tanner McKee is a full week of practice.
And maybe the, yeah, last week was kind of a rock bottom.
Like, it felt terrible.
It's hard for it to get a lot worse.
Maybe they bottomed out a little bit and realized they need to actually change some things.
Do I, like, wholeheartedly believe in this?
I think you can tell I don't.
But do I think they could beat the Cowboys?
I do think they could beat the Cowboys.
And I was talking to my good friend slash enemy RJ Ochoa.
He's like the Cowboys version of me at Blogging the Boys.
Well, let's not go that far.
I mean, he tries to be the cowboy, you know, version of me at Blogging the Boys.
And we do a podcast called the NFC's mixtape each week.
And he's taking the Eagles to beat the Cowboys.
And he's a homer.
He's like, I would say, he's much more of a homer than I am.
And he's like, the Cowboys are not winning this game.
So.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.

Jason Franklin, could this Jalen situation lead to a trade to the Colts and reunite with
Shane Steichen?
Hmm.
Are we sure Shane Steichen is going to be on the Colts beyond this season?
Even if he even finishes the season?
Ooh.
I think they, don't they have another year of like real commitment to Daniel Jones?
I would sign them to a real deal
I guess
I mean there was
Val deserved to be fired
yeah yes
yes he does
that's an interesting
if you had to
if I told you that Jalen was traded this offseason
yeah
and you had to pick one team
that made a move for Jalen Hertz
who would it be
this would be such a no-brainer
if Tomlin was still in Pittsburgh
because that's it's like
that is just like a marriage
that is absolutely
now then people could be like
that's a good one
Could Mike Tomlin be the Eagles head coach next year?
And I don't think that's going to happen.
But if he was still in Pittsburgh, I could,
and we're assuming the scenario you presented, I could see that.
I would actually, I think I would go with a different former offensive coordinator.
How about the Saints?
Sure.
I mean, I don't think Tyler Shuck is really holding the job down.
I could see that.
Although it did seem, some of the reporting seemed to be that,
not that
Jalen necessarily
like hated Kellen Moore
but I think there was some
no but I'm looking for a team
with the could think it's close to contention
that would be willing that doesn't have a quarterback
there is some connection there
you could see Jalen in New Orleans
that would be a lot of fun
the Jets
the Jets that's interesting
that's interesting
that's a good one
dolphins
I would
I would have earlier, I would have said Houston,
but CJ Stratt was playing at too high of a level now
to make that one serious.
Cleveland.
You don't think.
I don't think so.
Miami, I don't think so.
I don't think Jill and Hertz is like a Sean Peyton quarterback.
No.
Oh, that's a good one, though.
That's a good one, no.
I could see that.
Okay.
And Sean Payton likes to stick it to the Eagles.
Yeah, I could see that.
That's an interesting one.
I thought about Atlanta
but I don't think
Stefansky is
I don't think that's a Stefansky
match
I like New Orleans
Herbert for Hertz straight up
oh
well that's the other thing
is yeah
does do is it how we're looking to
flip it for someone else
you know
Jalen
and
Jalen Carter
for Joe Burrow or something like that
Rivera
as of today
turkeys on
Manion returning next season
as OC
or period?
Nine.
I was thinking about the
Jordan Milana
calling him an evil genius over the summer.
What if the evil genius
is a next level situation
where this is what he wanted all along.
Emphasis on the evil. Yeah.
And there's some other shoot
a drop where it turns out
he's paid by Jerry Jones.
or something like that.
Or,
or here you go,
he's the conspiracy.
What if,
what was the Packers president's name?
The guy who retired.
Mark Murphy?
Mark Murphy.
What if this is a Mark Murphy?
He's a Mark Murphy plant.
Yeah,
he's like,
and he is an evil genius.
I was,
I was thwarted with the push push
being allowed to stay.
Oh,
that's not bad.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh,
you can't,
you can't open up your doors
and bring the evil genius
into your building.
This is exactly what happens.
I would put,
you only put nine turkeys on him coming back?
Yeah.
That's very low.
Uh, I,
and things,
things don't look at right now.
And I think it could be a whole reset.
Uh,
you have a nine?
The last time that an offensive coordinator come back was what,
2022,
Shane,
right?
Yeah.
Yeah,
I just.
I would go,
22.
Okay.
Drip Sensee.
If they do come out and look the same Monday night,
how many turkeys on Nick getting fired?
If the draft was tonight, what position goes first for the birds?
I don't think they're going to make a move like that anytime soon.
I agree.
Jeffrey Lurie, he's almost never done it.
Chip, but that was also one game left in the season.
Yeah, I don't, I think that's a, I put zero turkeys on that.
I agree.
What would that scenario look like?
They lose like literally 100 to zero or something?
I know, it's, they lose by two touchdowns, but Nick is yelling and at people in the
Dan's and making a fool of himself.
It'd be, you know, getting naked or something like that.
If the draft was tonight, what position goes first for the birds?
This is why we have Fran.
But I would say, I would say offensive tackle if you've got a top 10 pick.
Yep.
They've been wanting to do it for years and have needed to do it and could do it.
Okay.
We'll have so much more coming your way in Toyota.
Someone says the evil genius move is that Mannion wanted McKee to start the whole time.
And this is the first week he gets to implement his real offensive plan.
Well, why didn't he do it last week?
That one extra day made all the difference.
What is the, like, maybe the evil genius is he's more of a sorcerer, a wizard of sorts.
And what he was able to do is remove the,
Sixers weirdness.
Oh.
On board it to the Eagles and thereby pave the way for the Sixers to be normal.
I know not every Eagle Sand is also a Sixers Sand,
but I think a lot of them who are might take,
I might take that deal.
I think it's time.
Do you take it in the short term or would you,
like if,
if I told you now that the Eagles are going to be the Sixers for the next 20 years,
would you take that deal?
For what's the one of the what is the other end of it?
Um, uh, hmm, yes.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I never thought I would see one Eagle Super Bowl,
gotten to C2.
Yeah.
Feel pretty grateful for that.
I feel like the Sixers are so cursed that they almost need that kind of deal to ever have
success because I don't think they can do it otherwise.
Okay.
It would be fun.
Um, it's just been so long since the Sixers have won a championship.
I think it would be, I'd love to see,
I'd love to see what a Philadelphia parade,
because like the only Philadelphia parades I've seen in person.
I didn't go to the Phillies one.
Or in the cold,
you know, winter or two,
which it's a great problem to have,
but,
you know,
like,
it would just be fun.
I know,
so soft.
Clearly.
But like,
I don't know.
Go outside in the winter?
I just think it'd be like a fun summer party.
That sounds great.
Sounds like a nice time.
Um,
did you have any,
like,
watching the game last night,
anything that, like,
you weren't expecting to feel?
Huh.
Not expecting to feel.
I don't think so.
I think I was just pretty,
I was pretty locked in.
I felt,
one of the things I felt good about
is they seem to play
just like a smarter brand of basketball.
Yeah.
Again, that moment I referenced earlier in the show
where they actually get an inbound pass
and get a shot off and hit it.
Like,
I'm just not used to seeing.
that from this team.
But other things too,
like Maxi's getting doubled right as he crosses half court and is able to Embed
and Embed a bit isn't just like dribbling or hold or just even just holding onto the
ball and allowing the defense to reset,
but it's actually getting,
dumping it high low action,
dumping it down to Vijay.
I like that a lot.
I liked a lot of the non-big's posting up.
They had success to that with Jalen.
They had success of that with Vijay, Maxi, even a little there.
I like that a lot.
I think I liked watching Jalen Brown more than I thought I was going to.
I really did not like watching him with the Celtics.
I was a very big Jalen Brown guy.
I really liked the corner three he had where he had so much time.
Yes.
And then he takes that like just disrespectful dribble.
I appreciated the disrespect of that.
That's a great call out.
That was so like, okay, fine.
My friend who was watching the game with was so worried he was going to miss that.
It's the two open things.
Yeah, no, he's too open.
But no, that was great.
Yeah, I love that.
And I like Jalen Brown a lot.
That's all we got.
Back tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
Fran Duffy will be joining me.
Another surprise guest for Swooper.
We'll see who it is.
And then you and the professor are back on Friday.
Absolutely.
Weird week when you get a Monday game, you know?
It is.
But here we are.
Thank you to Meena Kimes.

What's the call to action today?
What should people put in the comments for today's show?
Tell us the scenario in which Nick Siriana gets fired after this game.
What weird thing happens?
Or the scenario in which Nick Siriani gets promoted to general manager after this game.
That would be fascinating.
That would be shocking.
They should do that for a game.
If this season goes terribly, they should let for one week Nick be the GM and Howie be the coach.
That could be fun.
Like, yeah, like when you see like a band, you know, like they, they rotate the instruments.
Yeah.
The drummer goes and plays a song on guitar and vice versa.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or at least or maybe just the coaching staff.
Okay.
Vic coaches the is the head coach.
Nick is the defensive coordinator.
Yeah.
And I mean's the, or Michael Clay is the offensive coordinator.
Yeah.
Has to coach defense.
Mannion is special teams.
Let's say, you know, do a little roulette wheel.
You can't say it's not entertaining.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's get
Cooper de Jena quarterback.
Okay.
I mean, he'd probably do some stuff
run around a little bit.
Let's get Jake Majors of safety.
Who do you think is like the best
player that could be in a different role,
entirely different role,
different side of the ball?
I think it's probably Cooper DeGine.
I think he's probably the best athlete.
Yeah.
On the team.
Although I think that's Sequin,
if he was healthy.
could do well.
Although,
it's such a different mentality
to play defense.
Yeah.
What would you put them at
on defense?
Probably safety.
Yeah.
I think
if it weren't Cooper dejean,
my next pick would be
I think Zach Bonn.
I think, honestly,
Zach Bonn right now
can replace Johnny Munt.
Yeah.
Easily.
I trust that.
I think it's,
It's worth considering playing in both ways.
Why not?
What is there to lose?
I actually, I honestly, I think we just solved this.
Okay.
I think Zach Bonn playing 15 snaps a game on offense
as you're blocking tight end.
All of a sudden, this is a respectable offense.
We fixed it.
You fixed it.
The answer was sitting there the whole time.
And yes, people are pointing at Smitty could play corner.
It was a good...
I could see that.
Corner at Alabama.
when they had him there at spring practices.
That was good.
But the bigger solution is we've just solved the Eagles offense.
Thank you very much.
We'll talk you tomorrow.
As always, we love you.
