All right, ready?
Three, two.
All right, E.J., let's talk a little bit about Howie Roseman's approach to tight ends in the draft
because I think we expect that the Eagles are going to add at least one tight end in the draft this year.
Dallas Goddard is back, but on a one-year deal.
Grant Galkatera, Johnny Munt, nobody signed through next season.
I think it would make sense for the Eagles to add a tight end.
What do you know about the way that he's approached this position in the past?
Yeah, so he hasn't drafted a ton of tight ends over his,
his tenure. I think that's actually the biggest takeaway. Yeah, right? They just haven't. Why? You know,
well, I think it speaks to them. Now, part of it is because they had Brent Selle
huge here. They've had guys who had... They heard that they had nailed their, their starter picks.
Yeah. And then filled the room with veterans. But he just hasn't taken a lot of shots at the position.
Yeah, I think it speaks to like when you look at the shots that they have taken, they've hit.
It's Zacherts and Dallas Goddard as the two, the two prevailing ones there. And then Grant Calcuttaire
as somebody who provided depth behind Dallas Goddard. Clay Harbor Erasure here. I mean,
It's a fourth round pick, man.
Yeah, I was getting to him.
Okay.
I was trying to go in order of significance.
Would you say Clay Harbors were more significant than Grant Calcutera?
Well, certainly pop culture-wise.
Well, yes, yes, he was on The Bachelor.
He didn't really have a lot of juice on The Bachelor from being honest here.
That doesn't surprise me, but I didn't watch the season.
Yeah.
I would watch now I would watch Grant Calcutera on The Bachelor.
Oh, yeah, he'd have more juice on The Bachelor.
Of those four tight ends, who would you most want to watch on The Bachelor?
probably grant i agree yeah i think you'd be dynamic yeah i think grants the answer yeah yeah all right
that'll do it for the future of my eagles podcast um so i wouldn't say that there's like a through line
with those guys where it's like you know elite testers or highly productive in college harbour was the
thing was the elite testing yeah you know not even a ton of production from a very small school
tested awesome urts it was production and it didn't test very well right dallas goddard smaller school
tested well, but was more about just like, this is a true overall tight end. And Grant
tested okay. Tested okay. Yeah. Yeah. But had receiving upside. But I think Howie Roseman has
given us a window into what he might be looking for in the draft. If we believe him. If we believe
him. What did he say? He said before the scouting combine, the tight end position starts with me
evolving. From my perspective, I've always had an affinity for the receiving tight ends. I think that's
shown in my work. As you evolve as a GM and as an evaluator, you watch what's
out there you're going to, you've got to be cognizant about the fact that on some levels,
the game has changed. There's room for both of those spots. When you look at our room this year,
last season, probably needed a more diverse skill set at that position. Now he said that.
And then they signed Johnny Munt. And then they signed Johnny Munt as a token before bringing
back Grand Calcutera, bringing back Dallas Goddard and signing Stone Smart, all guys who are like exactly
the same thing. Now you can read that one of two ways. Maybe they will add a two-way
combo tight end in the draft and that will be them addressing it further or maybe hi rosin is going back
to his old ways i now i don't think that how he's wrong about this necessarily i do think that if
you're using resources i i do think that the the harder thing to find is a is a difference maker
as a receiver uh i know that it's it's you know it's sexier and it's not as it's not as football
guy but i think i agree with having like as i'm as i'm watching the tight ends those are the guys
that I'm drawn to as well,
but I think you just,
like you just need a guy
who can check a box
and stay on the field as a blocker.
Yeah, from a,
and I think you'll add somebody who can do that.
From a,
Johnny Montt.
From like a value upside perspective,
I see where you're coming from,
but I think from like a,
you need to be able to run an offense.
And Sean Mann,
what we expect from Sean Mannion's offense,
they're going to need multiple tight ends
who are at least adequate
and preferably a plus in the run game as blockers.
So I would expect them to target a combo tight end.
I would expect,
and target somebody who can really contribute in both facets.
And I think you can draft somebody like that
and you can then say like Dallas Goddard at his peak
was that type of player
and really unlocked what they could do offensively
because he was capable of letting them run out of 11
and throw out of 12 because of the fact that he had
that versatile skill set.
Now the problem with that is this group,
which we discussed in a full episode on P.HL.Y Eagles podcast,
it feels a little bit more bifurcated.
It feels like you have your receiving guys,
you have your blocking guys.
There's not a ton of guys who can definitely do both.
There's not a ton of guys under the age of 24
who can definitely do both.
Well, so there's not a ton of guys
who can definitely do both
because nobody over 24 can definitely do anything.
I think like Oscar Delp
doesn't have a ton of production as a receiver,
but I think he could squint and see some upside there.
Joe Royer maybe.
Yeah, Joe Royer like theoretically could block,
but he doesn't.
really show it in college.
You know, he's fine.
You've got your guys like, you know,
Justin Jolie, I think Fran will tell you,
he's, you know, he's his number two tight end.
He can block.
Yeah.
He's probably your best bet there.
Aside, you know, aside from Kenyon Sadiq.
Then you've got, you know, your Casmarix,
your, you know, Cody Hardy,
these guys who are, who are elite blockers potentially.
And then you've got your Eli Stowers,
Max Claire, guys who are just really on there,
on the field to catch football.
It's funny.
It's kind of an anti-climactic draft
if you were looking for the Eagles
to add a number one tight end,
somebody who you felt really good
about being a Dallas Goddard successor.
It's a great draft if you're looking for them
to find someone,
maybe like a Brent Seleck type,
somebody who can be your number two
or your number three tight end.
That is absolutely unfair to Brent Seleck.
Yeah, you know what I mean, though.
I'm talking like a dirty work guy.
Late career, Brent Seleck and his prime
was one of the best tight ends in football.
Yeah, okay.
I'm more talking about like late career,
Brent Seleck, rounding out of the red.
Put some respect on the guy's name.
Like play play style-wise, like what Brent Selig was, especially late in his career,
if you're looking for someone who can be your number two tight end that you want to add a
primary receiving tight end above, I think that there's plenty of those in this year's draft.
But yeah, you're not fine.
I don't think you, unless you're getting one of those top two or three guys, you're not
finding a Dallas Goddard successor necessarily.
Sam Roush, I like to.
Yeah, I like him too.
But yeah, I mean, he's, I don't think you.
He's got those teeny tiny arms.
I don't think you draft Sam Rouse and you're like, all right, we found him.
No, but I think you're like, we might have found him.
Sure.
There's a handful of guys like that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, I feel like we know what Howie likes at most positions.
And so I'm very curious to see if the Eagles draft a tight end in a couple weeks, what kind of tight ends he drafts.
Because I am very curious about this.
I mean, just drafting a tight end, it would be against most years what he's been known to do.
All right.
