Hello, everybody. Welcome in to the P. H.L.Y. Eagles podcast. We are not Zach Berman and Bo Wolf. We will be talking to Zach in about 30 seconds. But it's Jamie Lynch, Rich Hoffman here with you on this Wednesday. And of course, the P.HLY Eagles show is presented by Bet365. Download the Bet365 and use code PHLY 365. When you sign up, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary at Bet365. Rich, we'll catch.
up with each other in the audience here momentarily, but my man Z.B.
Bring him in.
He's got a locker room happening in a couple minutes.
Zach, happy Wednesday, buddy.
Why don't you give us the 60-second rundown of Nick Siriani today?
Obviously, some big Cooper de Jean news.
Yeah, so the Eagles back at practice today.
They'll practice this afternoon, first practice since the bye week.
And Nick Siriani spoke this morning.
A lot of the early questions were about Devin White, as we documented.
yesterday on all t hely.com the eagles looked at a situation where devon white wasn't a starter he wasn't
contributing on on special teams he got beat out by zach bond and the copi d and then the eagles
had oren burke's uh on special teams and then of course jeremiah trotter juniors the top backup now
at the mic i i asked him about what he learned during the by week within the uh whole answer
a lot of it was uh turnovers and tackling need to be improved and uh it's not just uh
it's not just the turnovers they have,
but it's also taking the ball away.
They need to improve there.
There's going to be specific things in practice this week.
Real quick, did he expound on that?
Because I know heading into the buy.
He said, I know some tackling drills that can.
Yeah.
And I know the type of tackles that were missing.
Did he expound on that and what it meant during the biweek at all?
Competitive advantage.
He doesn't want to get into specifics.
But we will see practice today.
We'll see.
I don't imagine they'll do live tackling circuits.
But they,
he he does kind of adjust some of the fundamental training as the season goes on i know there was a report
this morning on the espion that coop in the gene will be the uh starting slot cornerback this is
oh no oh no howie roseman cut his internet he's coming in on that job lost you there zach just reset
yeah sorry about that you got me now yeah oh oh but would be so happy right now
uh we'll try reconnecting there in a moment with zach uh oh
There is.
Hello.
Sorry about that.
I got so excited talking about Cooper the Gene.
That's a report this morning on ESPN that Cooper the Gene's going to be the slot corner this week.
This really goes back to last week.
I asked Vic Fangio last week about this specifically.
Vic Fangio said Cooper the Gene was closing in on that job.
I asked Nick Siriani about it today.
Nick didn't specifically say that Cooper the Gene is going to be the starting slot corner.
He said they liked the way Yvante Maddox is playing, but this is where Cooper's been practicing.
He mentioned Cooper has a lot on his plate right now because he also is the punt returner with Britain Covey out, but he didn't like, he said you'll see how practice goes.
My take here, you'll see Cooper the Genet's slot corner back this week.
Zach, I know there's some serious business to get to, but I just was really taken away with how great that news dump was yesterday by the Eagles 30 minutes before the Phillies game.
Do you remember any better ones than that?
Any kind of more perfectly placed news dumps than 30 minutes before a Phillies playoff?
Yeah, I mean, I've seen a lot of strategically placed Friday, like the floor of July 4th type things.
I actually don't know how much of that was news dump for the Phillies.
I hear what you're saying, and there are ghosts of Joe Banner there, right?
But I think that was more, I think that has some more of the do with when the transaction lock comes out for the NFL.
So the Eagles announced their release is right when the transaction lock comes.
out, which is, you know, five o'clock. And then the other part, too, is the day of the week.
So because it was a Tuesday, that's when they typically do these moves. That said, yeah, the
timing was a happy coincidence for the Eagles. But the reality is this, as you guys know,
as Bowen me know, or as Bo and I know, as the audience knows, Devin White didn't have a role
here anyways, right? So this was really just a matter of time.
Zach, obviously, Eagles are a lot healthier coming out of the buy.
It's going to be really nice to have AJ Brown, DeVante Smith, and I assume Lane Johnson back.
Did Nick get into that at all?
And everybody full go here, or is anybody limited this week still?
Competitive advantage, Jamie.
Jeez, Nick's killing me.
Yeah, no, Nick said we'll see how that goes.
So I will literally see at practice in about two hours how that's looking, if those guys are out there.
You're going to see AJ and Lane.
They were both out on a limited basis when the Eagles last practice two weeks ago.
I'm expecting to see Devante.
He has to be formally out of the concussion protocol.
So we'll get a better sense on that.
But I do think you'll see all three of them on Sunday against the Browns.
And Eagles badly need it.
Because for as much evaluation as the Eagles can do about the offensive, about the offensive struggles,
a big part of it's just getting their best players back.
Zach, last one for me, since it was the by week, I'm curious, were there any questions about self-scouting and kind of, you know, being able to take a step back and try to not exactly focus on one opponent, but what the Eagles are kind of doing wrong and how they can approach these next 13 games here.
Yeah, Nick says he looks forward to the bi-week for that reason. So he has a chance to do that. And he says you really have to be honest with yourself during those situations. You need to be humble in those.
situations and that's really where turnovers are tackling or his big takeaways in that the turnover
differential is what he harped on three times in about like a five-minute answer was uh was turnovers
turnovers right and it's it's not causing them and then it's it's not giving the ball away and really
increasing their takeaways too so i don't know if that's something that can be coached you know
johnton gadden used to say they take the ball away better because they focus on it more i don't
think the Eagles are focusing on it less than they did during the Ghana era, but they certainly
need to do a better job taking the ball away. Zach, last one for you. On a scale of one to Joe
Flacco, how excited are you by the storyline of a PCL kid coming home to coach his hometown birds?
Coach against the hometown birds, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, I always, I always enjoy when Kevin
the Stansky rolls in the town. I remember Kevin when he was an intern for the Eagles back
to training camp in like the T.O era, a pen guy, St. Joe's prep guy. And now it's, I imagine it's
meaningful for him. I chatted with him about this last year and they had the joint practices.
He kind of downplayed it. But I imagine there's going to be a lot of his old prep and pen buddies
in the in the crowd on Sunday. Yeah, it should be cool. We'll let you go so you can get to
your locker room duties. We'll be following your tweets for practices.
updates and all that great stuff and you'll be back in the saddle tomorrow and we'll we'll see you then
perfect thanks guys and of course you can always get zach's book right there on all your major
uh you know book wherever books are sold as they say and uh read is writing on all p hely dot com
that wifi was hanging on for dear life at the end i thought he was going to come out with a real
hot take like on cooper de jean and how he just like you know somebody took an axe to the wifi line
i don't know what happened there but i'm pretty proud of that wifi it really
really felt like it had to, there was a lot of stress on it at the end there.
And at least get us across the finish line for eight minutes.
Yeah.
I always think of Bo when Zach's having internet issues because I feel like it puts a smile on
his face.
All right.
That's Novacare, man.
That's their fault.
Yeah, it is.
Just like the NFL was pathetic for not giving them proper Wi-Fi at the stadiums in Brazil.
Like, what are you doing?
Yeah.
Come on, guys.
So I guess we didn't have this on the show notes, but the big news yesterday and it happened
after the show was the Devin White.
Yes.
Parting of the Ways, I guess.
Yes.
I guess you could put it that way.
His accountability text chain with AJ Brown and Jalen Hertz is, I guess, no longer active.
Do you kick him out?
Do you just delete it and forget it ever happened?
Yeah, I mean, he served no purpose here.
That's a, what was it, $3.5 million?
Just down the tube.
I mean, Zach has been, you know, adamant about this has been Zach's line.
I'm surprised he didn't say it on our hit there, where Devin White is how we,
he was Howie's biggest investment at the linebacker position for a long time.
And the fact that he doesn't even see the field.
I mean, Jimmy, he was cheering for the bucks a couple weeks ago.
Yeah. Levante David tweets mid-game.
He's like, no, man, I just meant to, I just met the like that he's my guy.
Yeah, it's my man.
When you read the room, one of my least favorite of the Eagles of all time.
Come on, man.
I know he probably gave back some money.
I think that was some of the reporting yesterday.
Sure.
that for granting,
uh,
granting his release basically the,
he,
you know,
if he latches on with another team,
I think the Eagles might be able to recoup at least some of that money.
I don't know exactly what that figure will be.
But, uh,
yeah,
I mean,
what a disaster.
It's crazy.
It happened so fast,
too,
because he was,
you know,
if you read all the training camp reports,
everybody was saying,
oh yeah,
he's,
he's the first guy out there every day,
you know,
he's coming up with a few good blitzes every day.
Like,
you know,
I don't think people were like crazy.
impressed by him, but there really
wasn't a sign, I think, from
watching the training camp practices
that by October 8th,
that guy would be out of here
and he wouldn't play one game
without an injury, too.
Yeah, as it started trending towards the preseason
games, they're like, oh, you're not really going to see him.
And then, like, next thing I know is just
he faded out into oblivion there.
And I guess they just knew,
you know, you can't play a guy if he's that bad.
And if you're not going to contribute on special teams,
see you later.
So, you know, I
Eagles and the linebacker
are just so weird.
Historically, the way they treat it,
the way they handle it.
I would say I wish them well,
but I don't wish them well.
Yeah, he kind of didn't really
ingratiate himself.
You were cheering for the other team.
I know.
I know, like, look, he faced the music
in front of reporters.
I guess I appreciate that a little bit,
but come on, man, read the room.
Yeah, very odd behavior there.
So Devin White, we hardly knew you.
See you later.
I'm always curious when a guy, and look, there was whispers that Tampa didn't want him back.
And, you know, he was getting...
Todd Bowles, who he viewed as like a second father was benching him.
Yeah, and he was like, sorry, dude, you can't play it off of us.
That probably should have been our first indication.
I, for one, am sometimes a sucker in the storyline of like, well, I've seen that guy be great.
Maybe he can rekindle that flame and make it happen here for us.
And how often does that happen? Hardly ever.
Todd Bowles, a second father.
and also a guy who loves the blitz more than anybody in the world,
and that's what Devin White is good at.
I'm sorry, you're screwing too much.
We're done here.
So we probably should have seen this one coming.
But again, I probably, you know,
took a sip of the Kool-Aid, like, oh, he's going to find it.
Look, we'll see what happens,
and I think Nekobi Dean has been very up and down in these games.
Like, it's been one great game, one bad games,
Zach Bonn, a little bit more consistent,
but that Falcons game was obviously pretty bad.
I guess we don't have the same level of vitriol
that we might have if they were completely unsettled at that position.
It feels like the defensive front has been the bigger issue than linebackers so far.
Yeah, Bryce Hoff probably is, you know, it's that meme where the one guy's shielding all the knives being thrown and Devin White's under them.
And, you know, Bryce Hoff's like, I got you, man.
Nobody's going to care.
What do you think about bringing Robert Salo back as a defensive assistant?
I would love it.
Defensive assistant.
And his only job is just tell, like, remind Bryce off what it's like to play football.
I mean, Robert Sala, you know.
Because clearly, like, under Robert Sala's watch,
Bryce off knew how to play football.
That guy's going to be a great D.C.
Yeah.
You know, I saw a stat on the Jets the other,
like over the last two years of the only defense
to not allow a 300-yard game.
Like, the defense wasn't the problem.
He's going to be a great D.C. for somebody.
He just is another kind of Aaron Rogers' late stage victim here.
And I guess Jets victim more than Aaron Rogers' victim,
but the Jets just can't get out of their own way.
And Hassan Reddick, what a weird situation that is.
Did you see Woody Johnson said like, we got a spot for you still or whatever?
Just get on the road.
We want you here.
It's like driving down 95.
I'm pretty sure he's dug in, guys.
Like he's already lost like eight or nine million.
I think he's pretty much told you.
Nah.
He's missed a quarter of the season already.
Have you seen one of the best pieces of content on the internet?
Our friend Jimmy Kemski does the Hassan Reddick snap counter because obviously that was part of the conditional.
And he files it after every Jets game.
Yeah, Jimmy. Jimmy's great.
Yeah, the Hassan-Ratic thing is just weird.
And unfortunately, he can't come back to the Eagles,
so he can't even help the birds out.
It's a real shame.
But the news of the day now that Devin White has gone and passed,
and I will be curious to see if he latches on with anybody.
I'm sure he will latch on with somebody,
but what team is down bad enough to take a shot?
You know, like, you've basically had two teams that are pretty well run in this league,
be like, nah, we're good.
So it'll be curious to see where he ends up.
Eagles are always down-band at linebacker.
So when you cross them off as an option, the team that brought in Shaq Leonard.
I was just going to say, Shaq Leonard had one leg.
Remember the Shaq Leonard week?
Oh, man, we got Shaq.
Yeah.
Shaq Leonard deciding between the Eagles and the Cowboys.
And I was like, oh, man, again, I was like, that guy's been great in this league.
Maybe he can rekindle it.
No.
So the news of the day, well, before we get to the news of the day, and that's Cooper
DeGene, let us take a moment, a brief moment to tell you about some friends.

The headline today was Cooper Sharp.
What's your favorite cheese steak cheese before we get into Cooper DeGine here?
Because I was very much a staunch whiz guy my entire life.
Cooper Sharp is the way.
The only thing I hate about it at home, Rich,
is when you pull it out of the deli drawer,
it really sticks together a lot.
And you can never get clean pulls of the Cooper.
at least the Cooper I get.
So it frustrates me when it breaks apart and fragments on my sandwiches.
But I do think it's the best cheese.
I think we've already had this discussion,
and I think I've already angered the chap,
but I'm going to say it to you.
I don't like cheese.
No.
I like cheese on one food.
Pizza.
Pizza. That's it.
I have a very weird palate.
I know I am wrong, and you guys aren't.
But I don't like any of the...
Wow.
Renee is similar.
Yeah, Renee, my co-os on the Philly show,
says she doesn't like cheese, but she likes pizza,
cheese burgers, and mozzarella sticks.
So I've always kind of told her she likes cheese,
but she doesn't like it on anything else besides those three things.
See, I think that's even a little weir than me.
Yes, definitely weirder.
I'm not...
A mozzarella stick is a cheese stick.
It's just deep fried.
And also with the cheeseburger, you could just get a hamburger.
That's a very normal thing.
People do that all the time.
Like, if you don't like cheese, that is very easy to just order.
away from. So, yeah. So that's where I'm at.
See, I'm a big Cooper guy. So this is a big day for the Cooper community.
Okay. Well, that's good. It seems like a lot of, uh, yeah, it's, it just sticks together and
then you get fragmented pieces of cheese. And I'm a big sandwich construction, like, a believer.
It's a passion. It's a passion of mine. And it's hard when you get little fragments of cheese.
It's tough. I'm getting, I'm getting called a sociopath. That's fair. That's fair. My, my whole life, like,
Whenever my dad would get McDonald's or Wendy's for us, it was a big deal because he would order no cheese, but you'd have to look at it and see if I got wrong.
And they would just, Wendy's would get it wrong a lot.
And we'd have to, because of my palate, we'd have to go back inside and tell them like, are you the only Hoffman with the cheese?
Yeah, the rest of my family, they're picky eaters in other ways in which I am not.
Sure.
My sister doesn't like love seafood.
There's other type of things where I'm a little more adventurous than her.
It's just with the cheese and that's a I get it
That's a big part of the of the general food and it's a big part of why we're so big as a country
Yeah
Anyway, wait by the way I also saw in the chat that Hassan Reddick is basically going to Haddon Heights football games every Friday
It seems what a great fall for him, right? You know
That is pretty cool
Just go see his local local team he's done a lot of great stuff in the community there
Hassan and Flacco didn't cross over in college right
Flacco's older, yeah.
No, Hassan is younger.
Hassan was...
They're both the same.
Casson started at Camden Catholic
and then went to Haddon Heights.
And then Flacco was always Haddon Heights, right?
If I have that right?
I don't remember about Fleco.
I know he's from Audubon, I think, is the thing I used to see on his bio.
But I do know, yeah, Hassan Haddon Heights and then Temple.
I think it was around like, you know, he was honestly there when Temple was good at
college football.
That was fun.
And now Temple, I would argue, should probably just drop the sport entirely.
But they have a kicker that's he.
hitting 60-yard bombs on a regular.
Well, that's proof that the kicking is just at an outrageous level across the board.
So this wasn't on the show sheet either before we get to Cooper DeGine.
Do you think the NFL should shrink the goalposts?
There are times I've thought about it.
Yeah.
No, they shouldn't.
But look, if this keeps going and we get to the point where 55 is really turning into a chip shot, maybe.
I mean, you have a kid right up maybe a mile up the road that's hitting like 62, 63-yarders as a collegiate kid.
if you project five years down the line in the NFL,
I mean, I think 62-yarders are going to be the norm.
Meanwhile, I remember being on the phone,
Tampa Bay Bucks, Eagles game, grammatica, right?
Was it a 61, 62-yarder to win the game?
There were two grammaticas.
I think Martine was the bomb one, right?
And my parents were on the phone.
They were on a road trip somewhere,
and my dad and mom called me, and they were like,
all right, we don't have the radio because they were out of town.
They were like, give us what's happening.
And I was like, oh, the Eagles got this.
grammatic has got to make a 61 yarder that was uh that was matt brian that was Matt brian okay and uh
sure enough they heard my heartbreak on the phone that was one of the worst one yarder at the time it was like an
unmakable kick and now a temple kid's doing it weekly yeah so it's wild now kicking is is outrageous
across the board the uh the cowboy's kicker Aubrey yeah he just i like it's like it's automatic yeah
it's ridiculous like 57 like he's making it with a ton of room to spare yeah
And it's really not even threatening either one of the crossbars here.
All right, from our favorite cheeses to our favorite kickers, now to the story of the day.
Cooper to Jean.
Cooper to Jean.
We kind of our Discord channel here at P.HLY, and if you ever want to become a diehard and support us here at P.HLY, you get an invite to our Discord channel.
And I was pushing this hard immediately after last game.
I left the post game show with Fran, Vinny, and Bo.
And I was like, Cooper de Gene's got to start.
I was like, I know the injury set them back in training camp,
but I think when they drafted them as high as they did, they had this in mind,
which is I'll go with the youth movement right now with the understanding.
There's going to be some mistakes, going to be some learning curves along the way.
But with the youth movement, you can improve and get better.
And we'll talk about Avanti Maddox.
I have nothing but respect for Avanti Maddox.
It's been a great eagle, versatile, just a dude that's been plagued by injuries.
Tough.
but he just gets hurt all.
Yeah, it's really unfortunate.
But Cooper DeGine now gets the opportunity.
Jeremy Fowler had it first this morning on ESPN.
I think it's the right thing to do.
I'm quasi excited for some positionless football.
I'll throw that into Zach and Bow's chamber for tomorrow.
But excited for the Cooper DeGine experience.
Well, and Fowler wrote that he got off to a slow start due to a preseason injury,
but is now considered all caught up in Vic Fangio scheme.
And I think if you listen to any of Fangio,
press conferences. That's basically what he has said, where the, you know, the injury that caused him
to miss, what was it, like the first three weeks of the preseason, maybe three and a half weeks.
I think he pretty much, he came in the final game, right? He played in that final game.
That really set him back. Like, he needed to get up to speed. I would also say, I hope the guys
that have been playing the whole time are also now all caught up on Vic Fangio's scheme.
It wasn't just Cooper DeGine. But so in that final game against the Vikings, like, you could see
that one of Cooper dejean's strengths right now is that he's pretty good going downhill.
Like he's, and for a team that has struggled to stop the run, particularly against teams
in 11 personnel in which Cooper de Gene is now ostensibly going to be on the field for,
I think it's good to have like a physical corner that can get downhill, maybe fill some,
you know, some running lanes and and be a little bit stouter than Avanti Maddox there.
That's a good start.
Now, I will say, like saying that the nickelback is going to be the one sure who solves the run defense.
is a little bit of a weird thing to say,
but I agree with you.
Avanti Maddox was not playing well enough to continue to hold that spot.
So, you know, Cooper Degene, we have no idea if he's good.
Like I've had people push back and say, like,
you don't know what's happening in practice.
He might,
sure.
He might not be like earning the job.
You know, Vic Fangio might not think he's good enough.
I'm just saying that Avanti Maddox, I know, is not good enough right now.
Yeah.
And that we need to give a guy who you drafted high and has some tools.
to be good at this.
Like, again, he might struggle in these first few weeks.
But there's going to be improvement from those struggles.
That's usually the way it works, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's funny, you love cross-sport analogy.
So do I.
I think Zach Berman does too.
I don't know if Bo is such a fan or not.
But it made me think of like, you know, Sixers.
And everybody was calling for Paul Reed, like all for like a year and a half.
Bebo, Paul, give him his opportunity.
Meanwhile, you don't understand behind the scenes.
The dude just like couldn't really pick up the playbook,
was making mistakes in practice, like left and right.
and it was the practice habits that led to non-playing time and games.
So, like, Cooper's obviously not that because the team's given them the opportunity here.
But, like, that's where my mind went was like, oh, I hope it's not a Paul Reed situation.
I hope he picks up the playbook a little bit better than people Paul did.
But I think I think Cooper can get there.
Yeah.
You know, as somebody who played a bunch of different positions in college, like.
Positionless football.
It's beautiful.
What's not to like?
I mean, yeah, Zach's basically going to call him like the, you know,
the Warriors death lineup for the 2011 Miami.
But to your point about him coming downhill,
I do think Cooper has a little bit of concussion uncle in him
where he's going to throw his hat in the mix.
He's going to come downhill.
You can use his athleticism to hot.
And look, when you're grading or judging a rookie,
you know, it's not really fair until year three
to really say what the guy is.
But the first eight to 10 games of somebody's career,
like I did with Jalen Carter last year, was like,
all right, just look like you belong.
You know what I mean?
Like don't look out of,
like on another planet.
Just look like you belong.
Look like you can physically go at people and with people.
Stay with people.
I understand there's going to be learning curves and mistakes.
And I think you've seen that with Kubertajean,
just in limited sample sizes so far,
that he takes smart angles.
He can hang with guys athletically.
And as you said, he comes downhill hard,
and he'll make some hits and I'll throw his head in there.
So it's just a better option than Ivante Maddox at this point.
So it's like, thank you for making probably the hard decision
because I know Avanti is very respected in that building.
The guy's gone from nickel to outside to safety to like, you know,
some of that hybrid safety linebacker.
Like the guy's played everything for you.
So, you know, it was probably a tough decision for him to a degree.
And he's still a great guy.
Like, there was a story from training camp where Quigionan Mitchell ran out of gas on the wall.
And he picked him up.
And he was glad he was the guy to do it.
And obviously, like, he has that great friendship with Dallas.
Scott or they were in the scene.
Are they still living together?
I don't know.
I don't know.
I mean, if you, uh, if you saw those commercials, I think they,
yeah, suggest they still do it.
They still have the Nerf gun fights and they like, it looks like a good time.
They're a little bit older now.
Maybe they've, they've moved on getting their own places.
They certainly can afford it.
They both made a nice chunk of change, but that would be nice if they still live.
That would be cool as well.
Uh, so one other point here, Jamie, because I think we're going to get into this in terms of the
Browns too.
Like, you hear this a lot with quarterbacks where, you know, a rookie quarterback,
you might put the veteran, the Doug Peterson over Donna McNab, the Jacoby Brissette over Drake May.
You might put them in for the first month of the season if they are playing the tough defenses.
And it's like, all right, we're going to give you a nice chunk of change, Mr. Veteran quarterback.
But you're going to get the crap kicked out to you a little bit.
And that's how it's going to work.
And we're going to look for a nice pocket of schedule where we can get our rookie and, you know, build them some confidence.
They are playing, I think I'm looking at this right now.
so three of the next four games
since you that offense is
humming they're kind of a mess
defensive went off this past weekend
they're having kind of a crazy season
and their record is so bad but
the offense which is a major thing
is
still humming pretty good
so three of the next four teams are playing
bottom seven in offensive
DVOA and the first team
they were playing dead last
yeah the Cleveland offense is
not good so to your point it is
a very, you know, assuming there's probably a two to three week learning curve of everything,
just the speed and adrenaline of the game, all of it.
This is a good opportunity to work them in, especially coming off the by,
where you're able to probably implement some more teaching and game plan type of stuff.
So, yeah, it's exciting.
So the Browns, Browns Eagles, I have one of my best friends is a Browns fan.
And he actually traveled to Las Vegas a few weeks ago.
when they played the Raiders and he was like man I had a great time but you know all my friends in the in the chat he's got like a normal brown's chat he's like I mean we were just at war with each other just because everything is so bad for for our team right now and he told me he's like he's like is this the worst combined vibes in the history of football for a game and I said well like the Eagles do have the benefit of they have a week off so you know I think other people have you know Philadelphia fans have moved on to the Phillies the Phillies kind of sold
some of our vitriol here for a week but i'm like dude i was like the eagles are two and two and they also
don't have de shone watson a quarterback like like they don't have this terrible guy who's also
maybe even a worse quarterback than guy which is like impossible but i think i think we're getting there
it's it's getting close and and with the worst contract and you basically mortgage your last three years
to to acquire this guy so i don't think the eagles are nearly at where the browns are right now i just
looked back at what they gave up the other day because you know the image was going around
social media.
Wow.
It was, you know, first round picks in 22, 23, 24, I believe.
Yeah, let's see.
The quarterback exchange for first and fourth in 2022, first and third in
2023, 2024, first and fourth, all for Deshaun Watson, plus 230 million,
or 235 million, whatever it was, all guaranteed.
It's a miracle they had such a good defense last year.
How do you have that good of a defense when,
You're literally just cutting yourself off with being able to replenish it with blue chip players.
It's awful.
Yeah, it really is one of the NFL's worst trades.
Ever.
And it couldn't happen to a worse person.
So part of me revels in it a little bit.
Yeah.
Oh, 100%.
They're at the point now where the reality of the situation is Cleveland Browns are probably a better football team with James Winston quarterback.
Oh, I think so.
Yeah.
I mean, you follow all of the people who kind of watch the entire league.
in and pay attention and have a kind of a good gauge on, you know, this guy is performing at this
level versus average and stuff like that. And they're pretty much all telling you like,
this guy is historically bad right now. Yeah. I saw, I was reading for the pHLY Bet show that's
on Sunday mornings and Thursdays the other day I was reading, I was doing some research and
then Sean Watson's stat came up. I don't think he's thrown for over 300 yards since 2021.
Like it's just like kind of historically bad. He is just sinking that franchise. And,
And to your buddy's point, I always, there's a part of me, Rich, because we are those.
We were molded in the darkness.
We come from it.
I always feel bad for the great fan bases that just have a joke organization.
Like the Jets are like that.
I have a couple Jets buddies.
And they're really good fans.
And you just haven't an end up to organization all the time.
And the Browns are just kind of like that.
They almost can't get out of their own way.
They're close a lot.
Can never really get over the hump.
I should have stuck with Flacco if they could have.
I have more of a soft spot for the Browns because,
the Jets, it's New York.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Let them, let them...
But like Orioles, like any, like, brewers, you know,
like these teams that are like...
They've been a curse franchise, yeah.
Yeah.
So, uh, there's a guy who works for the ringer.
His name is Austin Gale.
He basically, he tweets out this stat every week.
Deshawn, Jashon Watson is averaging 0.30,
minus 0.30 EPA per dropback.
The lowest number for any Browns QB in weeks one to five since at least 2000.
Do you know how bad their quarterbacks?
Oh, my God.
They've had like 47 quarterbacks.
Awful.
It's been, I mean.
Wow.
So Brandon Whedon was better.
Wow.
Charlie Whitehurst.
Tim, Tim Couch was better.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, that's...
The second worst performance, by the way?
DeShon Watson last year.
I'm always a big bully.
Like, Cleveland dating back to like last year should have just drafted two quarterbacks.
Like, just throw a brunch of S at the wall and keep drafting guys until.
you're fine something because there's nothing you're nothing in this league without a quarterback.
All right, let's get to our super chat and then we'll take care of some quick business.
Let's see if my old man eyes, which are failing me here.
With Coops starting, does this mean Maddox goes against Hertz in practice?
Could this give Jalen more confidence to throw at the middle of the field?
I like where your head's at, but I mean, I could.
Thank you, Chase Daniel Plainview.
I would volunteer to play nickel if that would give Jalen more confidence.
Yeah, sure.
I think John Dotson.
You want some wide open receivers?
Let me get out there.
John Dobson, you want some production?
I'll line up against you.
He's another one.
Look, I know there's a learning curve, and we're going to get into AJ and Devante.
But, like, DeHan Dotson can make an appearance sometime soon?
I mean, that's a third round pick you gave up.
That's...
Yeah, I know it was a little bit different because you got a...
Sure, it was like an excess.
A fitback.
Yeah, no, that's looking pretty bad.
Pretty bad right now.
Howie's in-season moves the past couple years?
Bad.
Really quite awful.
I mean, Kevin Byard.
Robert Quinn.
Robert Quinn.
I mean, Jack Leonard was a signing, not a trade.
I guess Indomacung and...
But they were on the street signings.
They weren't even trades, right?
They weren't trades.
Linvell and Domenican.
But they were good.
I mean, they were serviceable at least.
Yeah.
And, you know, that whole team probably did not need them quite as much.
That whole team was already pretty loaded.
Yeah, it was just an embarrassment of riches type of situation.
All right, let's take care of some business, and then we'll get back into the nitty-gritty

Rich, how is, how's your handyman game?
It's not good.
It's like my cheese game.
Yeah.
Pretty nonexistent.
My wife always rips me because I'm like decent.
You know, I'm at Ace a lot, so that's why it made me think of this.
Do you enjoy doing it?
Some things.
If the threat of a bigger disaster of failure is not on the other side of it, like I don't
touch electrical or plumbing.
Sure. Like, that's just, I pay
for that. So, like,
minor stuff. Like, I just hung some
some drapes the other day.
So, like, that type of stuff. I can install a TV,
install a ceiling fan. You know, minimal
things. But every time my wife,
who our producer, Julia, is, like, best friends with,
she'll always be, she'll always, like,
mockingly call me Bob Vila as if I
ever once said, I could,
like, build you a shed out back.
Like, I know my...
How dare you be passionate about something?
I know my skills, and I know what the cap on them is.
But I was curious how you are.
Not good, but like, come on, how dare you show some enthusiasm for something?
Unbelievable.
Only to get mocked.
Yeah, I know, right?
I just hung some drapes.
They look beautiful.
I even tightened them up.
I went over to Ace and got the L brackets and everything.
You know, I felt like Tim the Toolman where I have the tools up.
I will say, whenever I do something, even as small as hanging draves or, you know, hanging
a picture or, you know, fixing the window or faucet or something like that.
The feeling of satisfaction when it's done is, I think because I'm so bad, I enjoy it so much.
Yeah, exactly.
It's better.
All right, so Cooper DeGine is going to be in the defense, but obviously, like you kind of mentioned there,
nickel cornerback shouldn't really be like all of our hopes and dreams about fixing this defense.
Out of the by, are you expecting a hoping, I guess, however you wanted to describe it,
a better tackling Eagles team.
And then we'll get to the past rush.
Let's start with like the basic.
Do you expect it to get better?
Because the last time we saw the birds here, what was it?
Like I think Ray Ginger charted 19 missed tackles.
Ross Tucker had like 15.
I didn't even hear Fran and what he had on his final count.
There was a lot.
It was embarrassing.
It was bad.
That's just a fundamental thing that has to be fixed this weekend at home versus the Browns.
Are you hopeful?
Do you think it's going to happen?
What's your belief here?
I'm a little worried that the self-scouting involves something is,
basic as tackling.
Like, you know,
Zach talked about competitive advantage.
Like, what are you going to do,
the Oklahoma drill?
Like, what is going on here?
So,
so I would hope it's better just because you are getting a get-right opponent that just
sure does not have,
you know,
a competent offense at all.
I just think he's,
yeah,
it's,
uh,
look,
it has to be better.
This has to be a team you beat.
You know,
we mentioned earlier that Robert Salah got fired and Nick is now,
uh,
Zach had this tweet that Nick of the class of 2021 new head coaches.
Is he the last man standing already?
No, there are two left.
Dan Campbell is the other one.
But there were seven of them.
Urban Meyer was the first one to go.
I think David Cully was in there.
There's a couple of years.
Oh, Brandon Staley.
Wow.
There's a few others.
So it's.
And Nick's been, well, Dan Campbell's, I guess, inching up on them in terms of success.
I think Dan Campbell, if we had the odds of who's going to.
But if you're projecting, Dan Campbell probably wins the longer tenure.
I think it's going to be Dan Campbell.
Nick has a better record than Dan Campbell, but Dan Campbell has, yeah, he's on a more normal trajectory where now he's got a team that is cooking with gas.
I mean, look, man, if they lose this game, that's bad. It's real bad. I mean, this Brown's defense is middle of the pack, you know, like an EPA per play. I think they're 15th.
Like, they're not sure, they have a great player in Miles Garrett, but it's not, you know, the number one defense in the NFL, which they have been in years past.
And as you mentioned, their EPA per play on offense is 32nd in football.
You know, just like every stat and number against them, we need a pass rush.
And you need it now.
You know, like sometimes a pass rush can help a secondary.
Sometimes a secondary can help a pass rush.
You know, maybe Cooper DeGine tightened some of those short throws up a little bit
and he's not getting picked on like Avanti and maybe it gives you two tenths of a second more to get to Deshaun Watson.
but it kind of, it needs to be fixed this weekend.
This is a putrid offense coming in.
And the crazy thing, though, is that we have seen Kevin Stefanski scheme up some really good offense in the past.
Just when Joe Flacco has been the quarterback, right?
And when Baker Mayfield has been the quarterback.
DeShon Watson, he just cannot fix right now.
And, you know, I'm kind of worried, even if they do start Deshawn, like, let's say, you know, he has a bad first drive,
or maybe he gets dinged up or something like that.
And then they put James in.
then it gets a little scarier, right?
Yeah, because, I mean, he's got to be better, right?
Well, you know, you always get the emotional boost for at least the driver or two at the backup quarterback.
And then the backup quarterback usually proves that...
Why they're a backup quarterback.
But this is different.
The backup quarterback is better than the starter.
Most likely, yeah.
You know, James, like, obviously, like, he'll throw you a bunch of picks, but it'll also give you some great problems.
He's got an arm on.
James Winston has really kind of grown on my like and appreciate list.
He's so goofy and weird.
that I've grown to enjoy him.
When I used to just think the W thing was weird,
I've watched more and more videos about, like,
teammates talking about him,
and he's, like, beloved in these locker rooms.
Like, he's so goofy and on a different planet,
he kind of entertains me a little bit.
Yeah.
Well, James Winston's side note there.
I agree.
Let's preface this with,
I think Kevin Stefanski is a good coach.
For the reasons we laid out,
I think he was a two time.
I was going to say he's won it twice, I think.
Twice, I believe.
And obviously, that's like a subjective award.
But look, he's delivered.
two very good coaching seasons so far.
Do you think he might get fired if, you know,
just as kind of the scapegoat if this season goes off the rails?
Who is a Haslam out there?
I mean, somebody's got to be a scapegoat, right?
You know, like Robert Sala is, you know,
the coach is always the guy to go.
I would think it would be too early this year.
You have to face the reality of your situation,
which was you made a irrehensible,
awful decision to bring in a truly bad guy as your quarterback.
And not only that, but to give him more guaranteed money than any quarterback in the league at the time,
like you made your bed sleep in it.
I don't think that's Kevin Stefanski's fault.
I think he's established the fact that he's a good coach in this league.
I think it would be foolish, but it's the NFL.
It's certainly potentially on the table.
The one thing I would push back on it, just because I think their season has been that much of a disaster so far
and the vibes are bad, is that he signed a.
contract extension along with the Atcherberry.
Oh.
So in.
This is year one of the extension.
Yeah, a few months ago.
I don't know how long it goes.
Yeah, I'd be shocked if it happened this year, but they would have to, you know,
the Brown's reality is looking at this offseason and going, how do we get out of this
contract and move forward?
We just have to eat the money and like, you just need to watch your hands of it after
this season.
But like, look, for the Eagle standpoint, Jamie, this is a team they have to beat.
Absolutely.
Their offense is a disaster.
Their defense has been mediocre.
Mediocre.
The Browns fans are turning on Jim Schwartz a little bit.
I think they realize he's a good coach, but look, the vibes are so bad elsewhere.
The Bender, but don't break isn't selling out there.
It has not been quite as good.
And by the way, that's normal, right?
Sure.
For defenses, it's very rare.
Obviously, you're seeing teams like Baltimore and San Francisco a few years ago that, you know,
have the personnel to just be dominant year after year.
But a lot of times you have a great defensive year that relies on turnover, a little bit of luck.
Then you go down to average next year.
and really a lot has not changed.
So look, I look at both sides of the ball, right,
against a defense that's playing mediocre ball.
Against a mediocre defense,
if they, Eagles have A.J. Brown,
Lane Johnson, hopefully, DeVante Smith, Beck.
They should be able to score against a mediocre, a mediocre defense.
And we're looking for competency on the defensive end of the, of the ball.
So if you're playing the worst offense in the league,
a competent defense should be fine against them, right?
Yeah.
I mean, one of the notes I had written down here for us today was A.J. Brown and Devante Smith and Lane Johnson.
It's really that simple, isn't it? I mean, you're getting back three of the top five most important Eagles.
Jalen Hertz is the other one. Jalen Hertz now has no excuse if A.J. Devante, Dallas got her.
And frankly, Sequin Barkley, from a just best player in the NFL aspect, is in the conversation this year.
It's a very weird year in the NFL where guys aren't throwing for over 300 yards like we're used to.
You know, not many quarterbacks as of last week when I did the P.HL. Why Betts show had hit overs on one and a half passing touchdowns per game. It's not this like greatest show on turf game right now. It's kind of a ground and pound and grind these games out type of league. And you have one of the best players at that right now. And Sequin Barclays look tremendous. Jalen Hertz has Devante and AJ and Lane most likely back. This is kind of a big Judge Jalen game.
to be honest with you.
I mean, it's a mid-defense like you mentioned,
but you're full strength,
and you have weapons galore,
you're coming out of the buy,
hopefully, you know,
you self-scouted and then tweak some things,
whatever it may be.
But this is a big test for the offense
because they have to come out
and look kind of the best they have all year
because there hasn't been anywhere close
to a complete four quarters from this offense.
AJ Brown is a true difference maker.
They need to look good on Sunday.
I hope so,
and I hope we see more of the stuff.
we saw the first week of the year with the motion and getting
AJ open, getting Sequin open on wheel
route, stuff like that. That just felt like an explosive offense
that you could count on to put up points every week.
And I got to say, for Jalen Hertz, like, no turnovers this week.
I just want to be able to judge,
judge your play and talk about your good throws,
you know, your management of the blitzes,
which during the first four games,
there have been good moments without having to put
a big old asterisk on it and just say, well, he's also turning the ball over basically more
than anybody, not named Will Levis. Since week one last year, he leads the NFL in turnovers.
Yeah. And it's a problem. I don't want to talk about all of these positive plays and have to put
a big old qualifier on it and have people, you know, screaming at me to say, he's been below average
because of the turnover stuff. I agree. Yeah, totally. We got a super chat here from real time
with Prince Blue. Rich Hoffman equals Dexter for your lack of cheese. And I guess that
probably was it.
Serial killers don't like cheese.
I guess it must be a universal trade amongst all of them.
I don't know.
I'll have to look into that more.
But thank you, Real Pins Blue.
We appreciate that.
Sure enough.
Yeah.
Now, you're coming out of the buy.
We talked about it in weeks previous.
Sequin Barclay's workload.
How do you want to see this kind of handled?
He's obviously dominant.
He's got a dominant offensive line in the run game ahead of them.
He's spectacular.
He's your big game hitter right now.
AJ Brown hopefully gives you another option there.
Do you want to see, you know, we talked about at one point,
if you were to play 21 games at one point,
he was on pace for like 589 touches or something.
It's lower because he didn't touch it a ton against Tampa,
which was smart, like they were losing in that game?
Do you want to see them manage it,
or do you want to see them week to week just like if he's being effective,
run it, like, and use them?
How do you want them ideally to handle this workload?
So he's averaging 21.2.2.
two five touches per game right now.
Seems about right.
Which I think is reasonable.
Yeah.
It's a high number, but again, you brought him in to give him a lot of touches.
And it's not an obscene number.
Now, obviously, if you start playing in the playoffs, it'll start to add some wear and tear.
I think overall, that's fine.
I just want to see a game where they hit some big plays with AJ and Devonte early,
and they can kind of load manage them through the game because they're winning.
Yes, that would be nice.
Right?
So I think they're okay right now.
And I think, you know, because of how the Tampa game went and because, you know, in the second half, after Seguan makes the big play and Jalen turns the ball over, all those things, I think they were able to keep his workload down that game.
You have a bi-week.
I think he's okay.
I bet you he's pretty fresh right now.
And I would say just treat it game by game.
Like there might be a game where, you know, maybe they're playing Sinti a few weeks from now.
and they want to keep that dynamic
offense off the field.
And they say, well, okay, the big way to do it
is to just force feed Sequin this week.
That's fine.
But there have to be games where you're not so unbelievably reliant.
There have to be games, Jamie,
where we're not counting Sequan's touches
in the first quarter of the game.
And the reason we are counting his touches
is because the offense is zero points.
And he has three touches.
Like, I want him to have three touches in the first quarter
at some point and then to have 14 points on the board.
Yeah, yeah. I think these first quarter starts are a problem. And you're kind of putting yourself behind the eight ball in most of these games.
So like to that point, I hated the answer a couple weeks ago where it was like why Sequin didn't get his first rush attempt until the second quarter.
And like literally I can feel my blood boiling next to Vinnie and, you know, Bo and Zach was telling us about it. And I was like, I hate that. Why can't you just run them on first down?
Yeah. You know, like set yourself up for a second and six. The guy's averaging, you know, like it doesn't have.
have to be a pass play on first down. I'd like to see
more. I wish Jaylen Hertz would go
under center more to get a little play action.
They're not doing that at all. No.
And I think, how do you read that? Do you read
that as the coaching
staff knows he's incapable of it,
doesn't like it, or do you read it as
the quarterback doesn't like it? The quarterback
doesn't like it. I think on that I lean
more towards the quarterback doesn't like it.
That's what I want to believe.
What's in the back of my mind and it doesn't leave
is that the coaches know he's not good at it?
Well, I think part of the reason they didn't run motion over the past few years is he likes to have that static picture, right?
And the difference with motion is, yeah, it can confuse the defense, but there is kind of a shape-shifting element of the defense.
Sure, you find out if they're in zone or man or whatever.
And, you know, while you're able to maybe get some clues on what defense they're running, they also can shift and do some different things or whatever.
And I wonder if just the element of play action passing where,
you take your eyes away from the defense for that split second.
And that's like, look, that's a specific skill set.
Kirk Cousins is awesome at that.
Yeah.
So it's the reason he's...
Matt Ryan was awesome at it, you know?
So I'd love to see it.
I love play.
I'm a sucker for play action football.
I just,
I think it's beautiful.
Well, and it feels like you have the...
And you just can't have it in the playbook right now.
It feels like you have the personnel to do that.
Yeah.
Like, how do you not respect Saquan Barclay anytime if Jalen hurt?
But the problem is you need to be able to throw out of it.
You can't just, you can't have a door.
direct poker tell where if he goes under center you run play action so it's just it's unfortunate it's
probably not going to be a part of the offense and we'll see what happens uh all right rich we're winding
down but kevin savansky uh was my year from from st jo's prep and i bring this up um to ask you
didn't respond to my text over the weekend i don't know if you caught the instant classic pcl
football match i did where the la salle high school explorers sean mcdermott's alma mater uh took down
the St. Joe's prep fighting Kevin St.fanskies in a four-over-time thriller with LaSalle going for a two-point
conversion to seal the game. What a game. Good call by that guy, Bob Longer does a great job on a...
Bob is a great dude. I've worked with him a couple times. I got to do the Isaiah Wong-Bonner-Lissau game
with Bob a couple years ago. Bob does an awesome job. So it's very cool that high school football is now
kind of accessible out there on the online world. It's a I mean, it's interesting. Kevin Stefansky is
is coming home.
It's true.
He's never on a playoff game because the one playoff game that the Browns have won during
his tenure, he got COVID, if you remember correctly.
And they beat the Steelers.
That's right.
They beat the Steelers and he was in his basement and the special teams coach on blanking.
I think the guy's name is Prefer, Mike, Mike Prefer.
They won the game.
They beat Big Ben with Baker Mayfield.
He has not won a playoff game.
And they were, you know, as much of a feel good story as they were last year,
They got their butts kicked by Houston in that playoff game last year.
So, you know, like Jim Schwartz, even his defense last year, it was very robust,
where they did have some bad games.
They did have some absolutely dominant performances.
Like, we know Jim Schwartz, he likes playing man coverage.
Denzel Ward, I just read, he has not practiced yet this week.
He kind of trusts those corners and lets them do their thing.
I think, obviously, Miles Garrett.
He's a beast.
like the game wrecker of all game wreckers.
He looks non-human.
Like, if I was that dude, I would never wear a shirt.
He looks like he was chiseled out of like a mountainside.
Yeah, and I mean, that's, I guess he's the left defensive end.
So that means...
Lane.
That's steel on steel right there.
That should be a great matchup to watch in this game.
All right, so we're not going to see each other before Sunday,
or we might see each other, but we're not going to be here on the airwaves.
what's your what's your vibe going into this i think it's i think it's a win i don't want to say easy
because the eagles aren't really capable of that right now but i i think they control it start to
finish i hope even if it's a i don't want it to be ugly i want i want to believe in this team
a little bit more where okay you know maybe it's not a super bowl caliber team but you got a
wounded team coming in here a team that's feeling bad about themselves that you can just hammer them
and and that would be awesome jami like the next four weeks on the
on the schedule. It's very winnable, man.
I mean, again, that Sinti game does worry me a little bit just because it's on the road.
And I don't really trust this Eagles defense.
But, man, they have a great chance to at least get three and one out of this stretch and start
feeling good about themselves.
Yeah, this is a slump buster coming into your house after a buy. You're getting all your big
horses back. It's going to be great to see A.J. Devante and Lane out there.
I mean, you're a much better team before the ball is even kicked off. Yeah. I mean,
those are three of your five most important guys on either side of the ball.
And like my friend and I were talking about, yeah, the Eagles vibes are bad, but I still hold out hope that, come on.
Fix a few things with the coaching.
Maybe Cooper add some toughness on the defense.
I would love to see him jam some guys at the line.
I know it's not really Uncle Vicks thing.
But like maybe with Cooper's athletic, like, you know, just even in backyard football or pee-wee football, whatever you play, it was always annoying when somebody was right on you.
And you're kind of making that youth movement in the secondary.
Maybe you can get some hands on guys and kind of.
kind of just be a pain in the ass a little bit more.
I'd like to see a little different tweaks here out of the buy.
I'm still holding out hope that this Eagles team.
The vibes can change.
There's enough talent here that we can have a fun last few months of the season.
Yeah, yeah.
But it starts here.
Like, you've got to beat this team.
Yeah, this offense is putrid.
And you need a slump buster get right game for the defense.
Hopefully it happens.
Of course, you can always read Zach, Bow, and less on all p.hly.com.
We are not Zach and Bo, but hopefully we kept the same.
seats warm for you on this Wednesday. So, you know, it should be a get right game on Sunday.
Looking forward to having all the guys back. Looking forward to the Cooper DeGine experience and all
that comes with that. Hopefully they find a pass rush on Sunday. We'll see. But don't forget
Sunday, pregame show here, me, Bo, Fran. And of course, Zach will be joining from the stadium.
And then halftime reactions with me, Fran and Bo here in the studio. And then of course, Vinnie
Curry, who sat in here yesterday, will be joining us for the postgame show. And I do feel good
about this coming out of the buy. It's, it's time to, you know, put it all together here. The thing
most you alluded to it and this was on my notes. Are you going to be doing Phillies on Sunday?
I don't think so. Yeah, I don't think so. I really want to say that I will be. It is possible.
look I do think if the Phillies get to a game five they can win that very easily was
jack wheeler on the mound tonight's the tough one we'll see what happens you kind of alluded to it
what's the thing you want to see most out of jalen hurts here this weekend is it is just simple as
no turnovers I mean yeah I want I want to see like a clean game a clean game like just give me
you know give me 250 yards passing and and hopefully a big Sequin game where he hit some
hit some big plays as well but like you know and I want to see kellenmore give him some answers
too. Like, I want to see A.J. Brown running wide open over the middle of the field on a couple of
of these plays. Yeah. Just like... I'd like to see some just quick decisive decisions, too, and just
just let it rip. Like step back, two step, drop, top of your drop, whatever, and just let it rip. I don't
want to see dancing. I don't want to see, like, let a cut. And I'm not saying the whole game,
but like a couple balls just, just rip it. Like Baker Mayfield did to you last week.
Do that to the opposing defense, you know? I hope so. I think it's, I think it's very within the realm
of reason. It should be. Yeah. All right. Well, that's going to do it for us here on the P.HLY
Eagles podcast brought to you by Bet365. Find out why it's never ordinary at Bet365 with promo code PHLY 365. Thanks,
