Hello everybody and welcome to the P.H.L.Y. Eagles podcast on a Wednesday high noon, Bo Wolf.
Zach Berman here to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a mailbag episode, but it's not really a mailbag. This is not your typical mailbag. This is a back and forth mailbag. It's much different.
I suppose so. It's still in theory of mailbag or in practice. No, no, no, this is much different. But it's a midweek mailbag. It's a good alliteration, which I appreciate.
Oh, that's the difference is that we're doing it on a Wednesday.
Yeah.
You know what that's funny because you did keep bringing up the fact that you wanted to do a midweek mailbag as if that was the hook that was going to really put it over the top?
Yeah, you need a catchy name for something.
That's it.
Okay.
So midweek mailbag.
I like that.
Now, why is midweek mailbag better than Monday mailbag?
Because Monday is a different type of show typically.
Monday, you're coming back from the weekend.
There's much to discuss.
You don't want to burn your mailbag episode on Monday.
But midweek, it's hump day.
You're like a hump.
Anyways, yeah, I think midweek mailbag makes sense.
Actually, when I was thinking of summer shows, I was saying,
is there a way we can make the mailbag like a Thursday?
Then I'm like, well, midweek makes sense for Wednesday.
And why, why Thursday?
Why Thursday?
We're going to get into the machinations of what's going on inside that big old domy.
Is it machinations or machinations?
Who knows?
Well, presumably somebody.
I think it's machinations, isn't it?
Am I grinding the show?
I already gave you my answer.
Okay.
Okay.
I just, I, I like to organize each day of the week.
And I thought that it's, it's kind of a fun thing for a Thursday, right?
But you never know when.
You could argue Thursday is midweek as well.
You could, I suppose so.
But I think Wednesday midweek mailbag makes a lot of sense.
It gives people, it gives people something to look forward to in the middle of the week.
There you go. And this will be our last midweek mailback. So there's not really much to look forward to.
Well, it's not our last midweek mailbag with the two of us. There's a midweek mailbag
scheduled for July 10th. Wow. Stay tuned for that. Yeah. Mark it on the calendars. Before that,
I believe I'll be with Rich Hoffman. So we'll have a lot of fun questions to discuss. Big night, Zach.
Yeah, huge night. I kind of feel like you with streaming services right now. You know how you're thrown off by the idea of
anything not being on like the way it was for the last 30 years.
You cannot continue to misrepresent the argument.
I mean, the people in the comments are telling you that you were doing it incorrectly.
So my entire life, I've been used to the NBA drafting on a Thursday night
or something special about Thursday night NBA draft.
So it's Wednesday.
I feel like I'm a day to, you know, I need one more day of prep.
Interesting.
But, yeah, I'm pumped to the NBA draft.
what the NBA is doing, moving it to Wednesday,
and how they have the first pick is going to be on NBA TV,
the second pick is going to be on ESPN,
the third pick is going to be on Peacock,
the fourth pick is going to be on Hulu,
the fifth pick is going to be on, I don't know,
Zachube.com,
and you're going to have to just change every single time
to find out what's happening.
Yeah, that is not what is occurring,
but tonight is the NBA draft,
and tomorrow 4 p.m.,
is the second round of the draft.
This weekend is the NHL draft.
Charlie is on his way to,
Vegas right now. Lucky guy. I'm envious of him.
So it's going to get to see that Eiffel Tower, that famous Eiffel Tower.
Why go to Paris? When you can go to Paris, Paris, right?
Wrong.
And he gets to go to the sphere, which I'm envious of as well. I hear great things about the sphere.
So.
Circular in nature, I've heard.
You can find all our coverage on all p.hly.com.
The draft party tonight at Garage, Fishtown. I'm hoping to stop by.
watch the guys.
Do you like the garage in Fitchdown?
I do.
I haven't been in a while, but in my younger years.
Like I was more of the garage in East Pass Young.
That's where I lived.
Okay.
In those days, like a garage.
You're, yeah, you're a big, big drafto, big Sixers fan.
I want to know what you're hoping for.
Let's start this episode on the draft and not the, okay.
Well, I'm expecting fireworks.
I've been doing my, I've been doing my, like, you know,
cramming?
48 hours of cramming my thoughts on these guys.
I'm expecting fireworks.
I'm expecting, you know, I would, I don't, I'm not expecting a stick and pick situation here.
I love a stick and pick.
Well, sometimes the stick and pick makes sense.
But I, I think Daryl's aggressive, certainly when I say Daryl Daryl, Daryl,
certainly Leon Rose made an aggressive move last night.
Not Daryl Hammond.
No, not Daryl, Dawkins.
No.
So I, I imagine that Daryl Morey is prepared for tonight.
opportunity is not a lengthy visitor and he has an opportunity tonight to uh to really keep the aggressiveness
though that uh you ascribe to him oftentimes plays out in patience right and not being aggressive
and continuing to wait for the thing that may or may not come down the line sure but the number 16
pick is an asset right okay now the odd thing about the NBA and they really should rectify this is
the trading on draft night is you know you can't formally announce the trade the players conduct
the interviews with the other teams hat on and then there are certain like mckelle bridges all those
years ago yeah and speaking of mckell bridges and then also like for instance the there are certain
trades that are agreed upon but cannot be consummated until after the draft right so
Pretty much one of the only two times you hear the word consummated used in the English language, I would say.
Is what with deals?
Like trades and marriages.
What contracts?
Yes.
Anytime you're finalizing something.
Well, I know what the word means, but I don't feel like it's often used that way.
Everyone has their different ways of using the word consummated.
Is that true?
Yes.
Yes. But I, so I'm aggressive. I'm expecting Darryl Moore to be aggressive tonight. Whether that materializes tonight or in 10 days or 30 days, we'll see. But I imagine the 16th pick will be an asset. If they do stick and pick, there are some intriguing options. I think a slight trade-up could be advantageous. I will say I'll defer to, you know, Kyle Newbeck and Derek Bodner and Devon Givens, who are doing an outstanding.
standing job on our network with their Sixers coverage.
I don't know what to make out of Ron Holland, who's someone who's on Ron Holland,
whose profile intrigues me, the athleticism, certainly the five-star pedigree.
Love that.
The fact that he plays hard, you like that.
He can be an assy, like he can be a rotation piece, but does he take that next step
really depends on if he can become a shooter.
and you hear it's hard to become a shooter, right?
This was always the, you hear Kauai Leonard used as an example of a player in the teens who added that and became a superstar.
I think when the Sixers drafted Zaire Smith, speaking about McHale Bridges, that was kind of what was used.
More often than not, the player does not become a shooter.
I mean, unlikely that the 16th overall pick is going to be a superstar, but.
No, but I'm saying, is Ron Holland, is he going to become Josh,
Jackson where you're you're looking at like these tantalizing tools but just doesn't put it together
or does it become Jalen Brown? And I know there is that's a wide range of outcomes, but that intrigues
me. So basically are you looking to try to hit the home run here? If you're looking to get a good
rotation piece, I said this when I was on the PHLY Sixers show, Zach Eadie makes sense from the
perspective of they need a backup center they've needed a backup center for a long time he can give
you 15 to 18 productive minutes a game as joel mbeads backup when joel doesn't play he can take on a
more prominent role but you're not saying all right zak edie's going to be your your all-star for you
uh and i i know here in fin phil you you look at you know that the maxi pick in 2020 and and you say is
Is there any way that you can find the player who slipped through the cracks, right?
And that guy becomes one of your building blocks.
And so it really depends what you're looking for.
I'd love to hate Edy.
And I do not enjoy watching him and did not enjoy watching him in college.
But I think at 16, I think that actually is it.
That would be a fine outcome.
Sure.
Canadian.
So I always like seeing that.
Have you seen the Canadian national team?
They are loaded.
Loaded.
The soccer team?
Basketball.
Yeah.
The Olympics are next month.
I'm aware.
Yeah.
The Canadian Olympic team is loaded.
So in any event, I want to see if, if, if, if, if, if, if, if Deraa
uses that pick in a trade situation, you know, you, you hear Brandon Ingram.
When I say you, you hear, we heard it on the pH, L.
Sure.
Yeah.
That was a fun episode yesterday.
Two, both, both Derek and Kyle made that their offseason prediction.
I've always liked a, yeah, Brendan Ingham.
And Duke, you love Duke.
I actually don't love Duke at all.
I grew up like despising Duke and yeah Duke's not at all the I I couldn't stand Duke then okay we agree on something you you start to develop like a respect for certain Duke players but when I was disagreeing so so like when I was in high school there were there was probably few people I disliked more than like JJ Redding a hundred percent and just I couldn't you know I I think I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm
I think I've said this on the show.
I went to high school with somebody who was, like, one of the top shooting guards in that class, and he was behind JJ.
I mean, it's silly to talk around it.
You might as well say who it is.
Yeah, I went to high school with Matt Walsh, who went to Florida.
And, like, Jay, you know, and so I was, like, a sucker for all the recruiting rankings.
And I could tell you everyone in, like, the class of 2002 where they ranked, right?
And I'm like, well, it's just better than JJ.
Well, she's better than JJ, right?
You know.
Julia remembers these conversations.
And so then I got to say this.
When JJ, when he was on his podcast, you know, when he had his podcast, I was like, I actually find him to be very likable on the pod.
And I listen to so many of his podcast now.
Now he's the Lakers coach.
And it's like, you have to go back to not like him.
But I really felt that.
I remember a Wake Forest Duke game, my freshman year, I believe, JJ so disliked that during the National Anthem, one of the Scream and Demons yelled F.U.J.J. in the middle of the national anthem. Yeah.
That's his own.
But then, you know.
Also to JJ Reddick.
Joy and I had a classmate who played with JJ at Duke.
And so when I would watch Duke, I would.
Again, without naming names, like.
Lee Malkioni.
And so I would root for Lee Melchione when Duke played, but I would not root for Duke.
I was a big Maryland fan at one point.
Okay.
I loved.
Juan Dix and Drew Nicholas?
Well, a little before that, like Keith Booth.
Oh, interesting.
When I was in fifth grade, Keith Booth was a senior, and he was awesome.
And then those Maryland teams, I don't know, we're really, I thought we're doing an Eagles map back here.
It's June 26th.
It's the day of the NBA draft.
Okay.
I think it's okay.
we talk a little bit longer.
And then of course, when I was 22, I started covering the ACC professionally.
And so I attached myself from all types of fanaticism.
And I've probably operated with that detachment since then.
And now I follow it more as a close.
How about general takes for this draft?
Yeah.
Anybody you're particularly higher or lower on than what seems to be consensus?
Well, this shouldn't surprise you or our listeners.
but the Kentucky backcourt, right?
I mean, I think Reed Shepard's a really good player.
I thought that.
But it seems like he's going to go top five.
You don't think that's about...
No, but going into the year, he wasn't viewed that way.
Okay.
I love Rob Dillingham scoring.
He's like an electric score.
There's a Lou Williams to his game that I really like.
I got to be honest with you.
I don't know the French players.
And the French players are like the big time prospects in this draft.
Risa, sure.
Is that how you pronounce?
Yeah, Zachary, right?
That one, I feel I'm pretty like, I mean, I don't know, but that profile does not seem so great to me.
Yeah, but I mean, he's.
I'm pretty skeptical on him.
And then Alex Saar, who looks like he's going to go number two to Washington.
Yeah, this, you hear this is a bad year to have the number one pick, but it could be a great year to have the number 16 pick, right?
Like, you know, I think back to 2013.
was it when it was a bad year to have the number one pick.
Anthony Bennett went number one, right?
But then Janus goes, what, 14 that year?
So you never know.
You really never know.
They say the draft is flat at the top.
Doesn't mean it's a bad draft.
Sure.
But at the top, it's not great.
That's how they frame it.
Yeah.
So I'm looking forward to watching it.
And probably won't be as attuned into the second round next year as I typically would be.
because I mean usually it's Thursday night
I'm rolling right through right this year
not so much
and then I'm going to watch the hockey draft this weekend
looking forward to that
I don't like how MLB moved their draft to July
I mean I feel like I'm primed right now
to talk about Charlie Condon
but MLB's not doing that
I think it would be cool if there was like just
drafts all week yes exactly
of course you know that'd be fun
Look, you have a week in June where you go, MLB, NBA, NHL.
That would be.
Why don't they move them all to President's Day?
Well, you got the Super Bowl coming.
So you certainly don't want to do counter-programming to the Super Bowl.
Here's my two takes.
Sure.
Down on Dalton Connect.
Really?
Obviously.
The guy's like 45 years old.
Okay.
And then I like Topich.
Okay.
There you go.
Okay.
Relative to consensus.
That's a bet I would take.
How about the Sixers range?
Who do you like?
I mean, Holland, if he gets there, that would think that would be a great outcome.
Topich, I like if he gets there.
I don't know.
E.D. would be fine.
Okay.
Isaiah Collier, yeah.
I don't know.
Don't listen to me.
I don't know anything.
Those are just the takes that I have.
Well, people, I mean, please don't say don't listen to me.
People are watching the show and listening to us.
You can hear the words, but don't take them as gospel.
Sure.
But well, that's what's fun about the draft is that is that nobody knows, right?
It is a, I don't want to say a crap shoot, but, you know, you're, it's like taking swings in baseball.
You're trying to do it.
What would be your dream outcome as a Sixers fan tonight?
What would you, what would make you like wake up Reed if he's sleeping?
If he's, if he's not allowed to stay up for it and be like, read, listen to this.
The Sixers have done it.
Oh, good question.
I mean, I think the dream outcome tonight,
would be trading into like the top eight and getting a young difference making type player
and then using future assets to go get a Brendan Ingraham type.
But yeah, I mean, I'm always, I always like it when you make that move up splash.
Because, you know, the NBA draft is a lot different than the NFL draft.
And then obviously an NFL show here, right?
Ostensibly.
Ostensibly, well said.
is that the cutoff line is pretty dramatic in the NBA relative to the NFL.
In the NFL, I always believe in trading down, right?
Or often believe in trading down.
In the NBA, I'm much more of an advocate of trading up.
It's much harder to trade up.
Does history bear that out, though?
Sure.
Is that just perception?
I mean, you just talked about Janus going 14th when Anthony Bennett went first.
Yeah, well, that's a significant outlier.
If a disproportionate amount of the All-Stars are coming in the top 10 of the draft.
I would say really like top six, top eight.
Whereas in the NFL, I think a disproportionate amount of the pro bowlers are outside of the first round.
Well, there are seven rounds as opposed to two rounds.
That's exactly what I'm saying.
Is that in that there's fewer players.
One player makes much more of a difference in the NBA.
I can use the Darryl Morey line of like imagine if you had someone who played offense and defense and he can play the, you know, and there's no, you know, in in baseball, there's a limitation for the amount of times you can hit the ball, right?
In basketball, you can get at every possession.
You can manipulate all your matchups, right?
So if you hit on on a pick, it changes your franchise.
Okay.
So there's no, you don't have an answer for like a favorite, like an ideal splash for tonight?
I would say trade.
up let's say let's make it the night of your dreams well the night of my dreams this year's
from a sixers fan this year's draft class is not in my dreams um i i i mean if you could have any
outcome it would be trading for i mean lebron well well first of all you can't trade for lebron
well i know but like they could they could make the reports that this is happening like
you know, essentially.
No, I mean, he's a free agent.
Well, like, you could get the reporting of, I mean, if you could do any of like, oh, this, this is setting the Sixers up to sign LeBron James and draft Brian James the second round.
Honestly, you know what my answer is how my answer would be?
Honestly, would be Kevin Durant.
Okay.
Well, you saw the reports last night that Houston's kind of building their assets up to get Kevin Durant.
My dream scenario for the Sixers would be like this picks out.
actually being made for Phoenix because there's going to be a Kevin Durant trade.
Right.
So that's fun.
Yeah.
I mean, I think given the window, given the shot maker, yeah, Kevin Durant would be the out.
And if there is any like remote possibility that Kevin Durant's available, then I would say the dream outcome is Kevin Durant.
Okay.
Well, you know what happens?
Shout out to the Philadelphia Union, right?
You know how you get to your dreams, Zach?
You go to sleep.
You sleep healthily because at sleep healthy, PA, they are committed to helping Philadelphia
your residents, stop the snore and find solutions for sleep apnea that will allow you to rest well
and improve your health so that you can dream big like the Sixers landing Kevin Durant.
Dr. Andrew Cohen, board certified in dental sleep medicine and his staff will work one-on-one with
you to provide first-class care that will meet your needs. A lot of physicians out there are not
equipped to provide other options for you beyond the CPAP machine. And we know how cumbersome and
unwieldy that CPAP machine can get. And if you're snoring a ton, chances are your significant
other is not so happy for you. Listen, you know, you can poo-poo this stat all you want. But 50%
of divorces, sight snoring as a main issue, according to the copy here, you know, maybe it's
49%. Maybe we're rounding up. Either way, that's a hefty change. A hefty change. A hefty
junk. And Dr. Andrew Cohen is trying to help you save not only your sleep, but your marriage.
Based in Jenkins Town, he has worked for years to educate dentists across the country on his
personal approach to helping those with sleep apnea. And if you are interested in stopping the

A question I often ask people when I'm talking about their jobs is like what are the
challenges that you're facing?
And when I speak to people in real estate, one of the things they say is that the market's
ultra-competitive and they talk about mortgage rates and prospective home buyers, perhaps just
like you are missing out on opportunities to win the perfect home. I don't want you to miss out
on your opportunity to win the perfect home. And that's why you need mortgage CS in your corner. It may be
news to you, but the mortgage company you choose, I'm sorry, the mortgage company you choose matters
more than ever. Even if you are already in the market, you can still, you can still explore
your options with mortgage CS. This is home financing, not a marriage. You may be shocked at how
much money you can save. I don't know if that means you don't save money in your marriage.
or that you can't choose your partner, but either one.
Mortgage Yes.
It is an independent mortgage broker in the failure area.
That means that they won't steer you to just one mortgage option or what's best for them.
They work for you, not the banks, and you always like when someone's working for you and not the bank.
Ben and Alec at Mortgage CS will ensure you have a rock-solid pre-approval, and they'll take time to explore anything you want.
What a novel idea.
That's Mortgage CS.
It's the Mortgage Concierge Service, and you really see the concierge part.
of that. There's a reason people win more with Mortgage CS. So call or text, Ben now at 267, 39174-25, and see for yourself.

All right, Zach.
First Eagles question for you comes today from Steve Clef,
who wants to know, given that the Eagles have replaced both of their coordinator
heading into the season.
Can you think of an Eagles team in recent memory that had as many changes as this one
and was successful.
Well, it depends what you qualify as success, right?
He says one, a playoff game or two,
but I think for us that we're, you know, overachieved, you know.
Yeah, so then the end to the, the quick answer for me is the 2013 Eagles.
Okay.
Where they fire Andy Reed, they have radical changes to both offensive and defensive
coaching staff, the personnel, obviously the head coach,
and they go from 4 and 12 to 10 and 6, and they make the playoffs.
as far as even 2021 would be the same template new head coach exactly yeah they make the playoffs
well said yep that too now they were going from yeah they were bad yeah they were bad yeah they were
yeah four 11 and one that's true to uh to nine eight and one right but that's a good point um as far as
like personnel changes i mean the there were a lot of personnel changes in 2002 in 2017 the
difference there is they had continuity on the coaching staff. And I think with continuity on the
coaching staff and the systems, you would really need to look at, like you said, 220, at 2021 and
2013. Elsewhere in the NFL, you see examples of, I mean, the 10-Ba Buccaneers, when they
won the Super Bowl, Tom Brady comes in. There's a lot of different personnel, right? You're
tailoring your offense to Tom Brady, but Tom Brady goes on and he wins it for you. Otherwise,
Patent's first year in Denver
It's very successful, right?
Exactly.
Talking quarterbacks.
Yeah, that shows the outsized importance of a quarterback.
There are certainly times when a first year coach comes in
and kind of does what Sean McVeigh did or what I referenced Chip, what Nick Seriani did,
where you turn a team around, you get them to the postseason.
But as far as Eagles history, no, it's actually, to the point of the question from Steve,
it's actually been sometimes ominous when they,
make these types of changes.
We all remember the dream team year with the player changes,
but a big part of that too was,
and we talked about this with less,
you're bringing in a new defensive coordinator,
a new line coach, new D-line coach, right?
There's a lot of changes there.
Certainly, we all think back to the 2020 season
when they bring in Rich Gangaroa
to kind of bring the 49ers element to the offense,
and it did not work out.
They never consummated that marriage
of the passing game in the running.
No, they did not consummate the marriage.
I have a story that I will not say about that.
Interesting.
Now I'm curious.
But in any event, it's not something that you see that often in Eagle's history.
Yeah, I mean, my honest, like, thought and like the way that I'm generally inclined
to lean is that I do think
that it is probably a problem
that there is so much turnover
and I think we're probably underestimating that
and I know the Eagles are not the entire
NFL but it is true that for the
Eagles they have had more success
when there has been a little bit more stability
at the top you know those those
obviously the second year for Doug the second year for Nick
very successful
there are you look around the league there are other examples
of at least one new coordinator
and a team goes to the Super Bowl or wins the Super Bowl
I do think if I'm
playing devil's advocate and I think what the
case the Eagles might make is
usually if you are replacing
coordinators you're doing it because
you have to downgrade because your
coordinator has been poached right like that's
what happened to the Eagles last year both their coordinators
were poached as head coaches in their
mind what they have done this off season
is upgrade those positions
right it's not like someone was hired away
it's people that they fired and then
tried to get better
with so you know
You can take that as you will.
I think that's the case that they would make.
But yeah, I do think that we probably, you know, on paper, things often look easier than they are in practice.
Well said, especially when you're making these dramatic changes.
All right.
I'm going to let you go.
You're going to let me go here.
Okay.
Because, of course, this mailbag is different than other mailbags.
This is a mailbag draft where we're doing questions, you and I.
Well, thrown off by Steve in the chats.
This is the worst episode we've had.
That's fine.
We do a lot of episodes.
One of them has to be the worst.
No, this is not the worst.
This is not the worst.
There's keen insight in this one as well.
So I am up here, and I've been spreading these around.
Do you want me to give you one so you can get Steve out of your mind?
Oh, I'm sorry.
It's in my Microsoft word.
Right here.
Okay.
I got this right here.
interesting i had steve's high up here as well different steve right no can you think no steve
can you think no but then there's steve in the chat who's in your oh yeah that's a different
steve i'm sorry yeah that's a different steve i i feel like i own a pizza shop and someone's
bringing the pizza back to the counter yeah yeah it's emerging of the topics of us talking about
sending food back right yeah so if you're the pizza shop owner do you think it behooves you
Do you think it serves the larger customers well if the negative note of one customer throws
you off for the rest of the day and you're unable to make a good pie that you might otherwise
make?
Well, it's not throwing me off.
But certainly if you take pride in the pies that you make and you make a pie and someone
doesn't like the pie, then you feel as if what should I do to make a pie that's the
head down and continue to do the craft that you know you have owned for a long time.
That's precisely what I'm doing.
Yeah.
and that you understand not everyone's going to like your pie,
but if enough people like your pie,
then you'll have a successful business, a successful pizza shop.
But if there's a day when you're putting too much salt in your pie,
and someone says it's too salty, you should listen to that, right?
Anyways, if a casual fan, this is from Cody Benjamin and what's up, Cody?
I always enjoy seeing Cody on the road.
If a casual fan asks why they should root for the Eagles of all teams in 2024,
besides the fact that they're talented.
What would be your pitch?
Does the Hertz leadership combo in any way
recolor your perspective?
Those are three different questions.
Yes.
So which one would you like to discuss?
Well, we can tackle all three, can we?
But I want to satisfy Cody.
Let's go with the first one at first.
Actually, you know what?
Let's go with the second one.
Because honestly, my answer to the casual fan part of it
is that I think there's a lot of tribalism in sports, right?
You're typically not adopting a team.
There's a team or a player that you like.
But my quick answer for why someone would like watching Eagles is offense is fun to watch.
They're going to be an electric offense team.
They have a lot of like, you know, high profile names.
If you're trying to get, if you're trying to pick a team, a team that scores a lot of points is often fun to watch.
And they're going to score a lot of points.
Yeah.
So that would be my quick answer.
But here, does the Hertz leadership combo in any way
recall your perspective of Wence slash his exit?
It does in this sense.
All of the stuff that you were hearing right now about,
oh, you know, maybe the egos aren't wedded to Jalen Hertz
or, you know, he really overstepped going to 95%
from what are usually voices in support of the front office, right?
the fact that you are not seeing like the the organization like batten down the hatches to protect jalen hertz and that they are sort of okay letting this narrative swirl in the wind this offseason if what happened with cars and wence you know you you you you um maybe your franchise quarterback was snoring too much and you decided that you needed to get a divorce if that happens again then all of a sudden maybe it's not the quarterback who's the problem sure it's the organization who's the problem who can't
cannot have a healthy relationship with a franchise quarterback.
That's an interesting point.
And perhaps the organization would encounter and say, no, the market's the problem, right?
I mean, I think they would say that before they would say the franchise is the problem.
Even if the franchise is the problem.
The market, how?
Like the Philly market.
They might be like, oh, this is so, you know, you guys can't have anything good, right?
I think the Eagles are a lot of things, but I think they're often not self-aware when it comes to.
So, you know, sometimes it's everyone, it's everything or everyone else is the problem, right?
I don't know, self-aware.
I should say more self-critical, right?
So, but to answer this, this question, this might seem simplistic.
I said a version of this with Carson, and I'll say the same thing with Jalen.
When you're winning, that kind of blank look, it's intense.
Sure.
It's driven.
When you're losing, it's wise and he's smiling more.
You hear the expression in all sports.
Winning's the best deodorant.
It's true.
Winning is the best deodorant in sports, right?
And I think perception often goes, you know, we, and I suppose this is a media thing where,
so to kind of say the team will talk about the market is that sports are often a narrative-driven business, right?
And a narrative is often based on whether you win or when you lose.
It's easy to craft a narrative when you win.
it's easy to craft the narrative when you lose.
From the, so from the leadership point of it,
I don't think the Eagles traded Carson because he was a bad lead.
Or I don't think it was the matter of being a bad leader.
But I, and I don't think Jalen is a bad leader.
And I think Jeffrey Lorry said,
I think Jeffrey Lurie said it well at the owner's meetings.
Like J-Wen needs to lead with the person.
Authenticity matters with a leadership, right?
And I think that leadership can show up in a number of different ways.
Jason Kelsey led differently than Fletcher Cox led, which was differently than Brian Dawkins led, which was different than how Malcolm Jenkins led.
Everyone has different forms.
Just like everybody uses the word consummate differently.
It's true.
That's why Baskin-Robbins says 31 flavors.
I suppose so.
So I don't think the eagle, I don't think there's a hurts leadership problem.
But I do think in the topic of being self-aware, I think you can always improve yourself.
And when you have a losing streak the way you did, the first thing everyone should do is say,
what can I do better, right?
What more can I do?
I think it's very easy to say that person is the problem or this is the problem or I'm okay.
We just need to change this.
But if everyone collectively says, what can I do better?
And with with Jalen, there's obviously there's things on the field he can do better.
There's things off the field he can do better.
But I don't think there's a macro leadership problem with Jalen Hertz.
I think it's it's more, you know, there was a show on ABC a few years ago called A Million Little Things.
Okay.
Did you watch that show?
No.
Okay.
I remember you did though.
Yeah, Joy, did you watch that?
No, yeah.
Okay.
But I think like in in most situations, it's it's not like one big thing.
It's often a bunch of little things.
Well, let me ask you this.
And this goes to the market.
I am not paying as attention, as close attention, obviously to the situations and 31 other front office or, you know, fan bases as the Eagles.
Can you think of other places where like a quarterback is signed?
to a long-term deal and there is so much
consternation that seems to be had
between the quarterback and the front office.
Dallas sort of comes to mind, right?
Like, well, there won't they pay DAC?
But that's because they haven't paid him yet.
You know, there was a little bit of that in Seattle
before Russell Wilson left.
Sure.
I don't know.
Do you feel like the way that stuff is often described
in Philadelphia is atypical for the rest of the league?
Good question.
Good question.
Yeah, I think that is the nature of the market.
I don't think Trevor Lawrence's comments are being scrutinized to the same degree.
But, look, I mean, Baker Mayfield, they had this in Cleveland, right?
Sure.
You know, you have this conversation whenever a team with Joe Flacco in Baltimore, for instance,
when they drafted Lamar Jackson, this came up.
certainly there were times at the end in New England you know we watched the Brady
documentary there there are things that come up so yeah okay so this maybe it's not as
out there as we as we think yeah I think the most underrated thing from a fan perspective
is the role human dynamics play in professional sports because and I understand this often
they're they're kind of viewed as as characters and
And when we talk about the draft, we talk about all these like measurable characteristics, right?
But ultimately, the NFL is like any workplace.
And it's actually probably more pronounced because, you know, you're dealing with young men,
primarily young men, right?
There's ego, there's money.
it's a lot
it's kind of on steroids, so to speak,
from a typical workplace.
Yeah, and sometimes not, so to speak.
Yeah, sometimes not so to speak as well.
All right, here's one from Adam.
I can't leave her 40 minutes into the show.
Jeez.
From Adam Hunky.
Name two Eagle, Zach,
who you would trade right now for draft picks
at a rough market value,
and he says James Bradbury is not eligible.
Hmm. Good question. At a rough market value.
Do you want to think about it? I have a bit of a list here. You can tell me what you think.
Now, this is, the Eagles are in a place where, you know, it doesn't really make sense for them to trade someone who is critical to helping them win a title, right?
This is not a, you know, strip for parts. Let's see what we could get. I think if that were the case, you know, you could make the case that, you know, you could make the case that,
Dallas Goddard would be worth more to the open market than he might be to you.
Sure.
If you think that he is too injury prone, you could make the same case, like Slay.
If you could get a second round pick for Darius Slay,
given all that you have at corner, would that make sense?
Sure, but probably not for the Eagles.
I think if you wanted to get really weird,
maybe you were so impressed with Keely Ringo that if you could get adequate value for Quinnian Mitchell,
like a team was willing to give you a first round pick for a guy who was just a first round pick,
would that be worth it?
You know, maybe if you like you didn't love what you saw from him right away.
I got an answer for you.
I think you could make the kid, and I'm just, you know, I'm smattering the board here.
If you don't love the medicals of Reed Blankenship and you think that Sidney Brown is going to be ready,
maybe that's a guy you could get like a mid-round pick for.
But I think the honest answer is someone who you want to sell high on who still has some draft pick value.
And to me, the answer would be Jordan D.
Davis or Nekobi Dean or Nolan Smith.
If you want to just sort of cut bait on somebody who you can make the case has a lot left,
but you have decided is not what you thought that they were.
Sure.
Of those three, I would probably say Nicopa Dean.
I don't know what I don't think.
I mean, yeah, yeah, what are you getting for Nicopa at this point?
A sixth round pick?
Yeah.
Probably.
So my answer to you, honestly, would be Kenny Pickett.
Yeah.
Right?
Like turning around and saying, can you get more than you just traded?
you just saw...
Yes, I think that's a good answer.
You just saw Tanner McKee in camp, Tanner McKee's progressing.
I wrote...
All of a sudden, your boy, Will Greer's got a spot to the roster now.
TikTok will be pumped, or Vine will be pumped, right?
Vine is dead.
People who use Vine will be pumped.
Resuscitated.
I wrote in my 15-step-off season plan that I would allow Tanner McKee to compete for the backup job.
and I don't know if like if you took away the history and you watch them in training camp
I'm sorry in in in in OTAs if you would say Kenny Pickett was like significantly better than Tanner McKee
now I understand that's a controlled setting it's a passing camp game in in games things could happen
differently but if a quarterback goes down and in training camp and a team wanted Kenny Pickett
like I would be not I would not be not
get adverse to trading him.
Absolutely. I agree with that.

get around and reminisce about drafts of past with drafts of past with an ice cold miller light
A lot's changed over the years.
One thing that hasn't is the great taste of Miller Light, often in a draft.
Another thing that hasn't changed is that it's less filling.
So what is the best thing about the original light beer?
It's the great taste and that it's less filling.
Miller Light keeps it simple, undebatable quality, great taste, only 96 calories.
It's the beer that strips away, everything you don't eat and holds on to what matters most.
The light beer, it tastes like beer less filling and only 96 calories.
The original light beer since 1975.
You don't have to choose what's best.
Miller Light has great taste and is less filling.

Miller Brewing Comedy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 96 calories per 12 ounces, fewer calories and carbs than premium regular beer.
All right. Go ahead. I was going to say E.J. talked yesterday about the temperature in the office.
I'm envious to you. I should go long sleeves more like it is. It is a little chilling.
When it's sub 90, I feel like I can get away with the long sleeve, but when it's, you know,
When it's pushing Nangdi outside, then it becomes a little bit, a big, a little bit of a reach.
A little coldness.
That's okay.
I feel like I just had a nice cold Miller light.
I think you're thriving.
Let me give you a couple of quick hitters here.
Sure.
Okay.
I always love a quick hitter.
Lots of rapid fire.
Yeah.
Interesting.
Who has more snaps this year?
Asked Darsh.
Nolan Smith or Josh Sweat?
Josh Sweat.
Okay.
Do you disagree?
No, I agree.
I mean, although you could make the case that Joshua's more likely to get hurt.
Sure.
I think that's fine.
From Tony, who's starting at Red Guard and in the secondary come Brazil?
At Right Guard, Tyler Steen, although I was listening back to yesterday show on the right home,
and I agree with how you framed it, 60, 40.
In the secondary, I am saying Darius Lay, Quignan Mitchell, Cooper DeGene in the slot,
C.J. Gardner Johnson, and read blanket chip of safety.
Okay.
So no Ringo.
Or Rogers.
Or Rogers.
or Maddox.
Okay, fair enough.
Christopher Walls asks,
what are your thoughts on E.J. Jenkins
and his chances of making the team?
Always like an E.J.
But I don't think E.J. Jenkins is going to make the team.
I think that the third tight end or the backup tight ends at this point,
I would guess, will be C.J. Usama and Grant Calcutterra.
And there's a way for them to start C.J. Usama on the practice squad, perhaps.
and kind of elevate him.
But I don't think they would do that to carry in E.J. Jenkins.
I think that they would do that to free up a roster spot elsewhere.
I will say, I liked what I saw from E.J. Jenkins in the spring,
more so than what I saw from any of the other backup tight ends.
So if there was a little flash, he's on my radar as a potential camp crush.
But I think it's unlikely that he makes the team.
But I kind of like an E.J. Jenkins.
I'm E.J. Curious.
Okay, we need to have a graphic for the radar for the camp crush.
I'm always curious when you kind of zoom in and that radar narrows down in the one or four camp crushes.
Alex Grayson has asked this question a couple of times, so I want to make sure we answer it this time.
Sure. Which part of the NPO, Zach, is your favorite to cover?
Combine, Senior Bowl, Free Agency, Draft, OTA, Mini Camp, Training Camp, or other.
I feel like we should take training camp out because training camp's got to be the answer, right?
No, no, no, no.
Really?
Not necessarily here.
So let me pull this up.
This is from Alex Grayson.
Yes.
I appreciate it.
Combines?
You want to, you want to stork rank this?
So here.
Combine Senior Bowl.
Free agency, draft.
Yeah.
OTAs, mini camp, training camp.
I feel like we could lump OTAs and mini camp together.
Yeah, here you go.
So I hear what you're saying about training camp.
I would say number one would be the draft.
Okay.
And when I say the draft,
I'm not talking the draft process.
I'm talking like the actual draft?
The actual draft?
You thrived.
We saw that.
We saw that.
Well,
no,
because when you talk about the draft process,
you include the combine,
the senior goal.
But like the draft,
there's a three-day event there
where material things are happening.
There's interest every day.
You're kind of prepared for it.
It's happening in real time.
So I would go draft number one.
And training camp number two, I agree there.
Free agency number three.
I would say that let's go with Combine 4, Minicamp 5, OTA 6, senior bowl, 7.
I don't know what other is.
Really?
You prefer OTAs over the senior bowl?
I do prefer OTAs over over the senior.
And I don't dislike the senior bowl.
always enjoy going to Mobile, Alabama, and try to learn more about Hank Aaron whenever I'm down
there. But I, yeah, the senior bowl is kind of so far removed from the draft, right?
You don't have all the top prospects there. OTA is your first time seeing the new team on the field.
So, and I'm at home, right?
Sure.
So I like that.
I don't dislike the senior bowl.
I prefer the combine to the senior bowl.
Senior bowl, you actually get to watch football.
But again, you're not seeing how many senior bowl players are first rounders?
What, five, eight of them?
If that.
Eight, yeah, eight to 15, usually, something like that.
Interesting.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
What about you?
Well, training camp is number one for me because that's, you know, that's, I'm all about ball.
Oh, yeah.
You love those O-line DELOND.
Then I go draft too because, you know, that's, I mean, draft, that's close.
Those two are close.
There's an adrenaline rush.
Yeah.
I like feeling the rush.
Yeah.
And the first few days of free agency are like that as well.
I would put that up there.
And then senior bowl would be next.
I would lump OTAs and minicamp together as the bottom of it and put the combine second to last.
Okay.
You're more of a senior bowl guy than a compound guy?
Yes.
You like a mobile more than an Indianapolis?
Distinctly.
You prefer just being in a room of very loud people, not being able to hear anything in podium stuff.
You don't care about football?
No, there's more.
Yeah, I know.
It's fine.
There's more people at the comment.
We don't really need to relitigate Jonathan Gannon.
All right, the question at the top and the hook here is 10 plus sacks are realistic goal for Jalen Carter in 2024?
for.
I think it's a goal.
I wouldn't frame it as a realistic goal.
So last year you look at the defense, the interior players, the defense of
linemen, so non-edge rushers who had 10 plus sacks.
There was four of them, Justin Matabouquet, Autry Jones, and Siler, right?
Fletcher Cox, who's an Eagles Hallfamer, the best players of this generation for the
Eagles.
In 12 seasons, he had one double-digit sack campaign.
You do not see it as often.
You don't see double-digit sacks as often from an interior player.
Now, Chris Jones has made a habit of it, and maybe Jaylon Carter becomes Chris Jones.
But even, you know, when Eagles had that 70-sac campaign two years ago,
Javon Hargrave was the only interior player who got to that point.
I imagine Jay-on Carter is going to face a lot of double teams this year.
So I am going to go with, it's a goal, but.
I want to frame it as a realistic goal.
Yeah.
It's a nice reach goal, I think, but it is in year two without recent precedent.
Last several years, guys in the interior who have had at least 10 sacks in their age 25 or younger season, there's four of them.
Quinn and Williams, it was his fourth season.
DeRon Payne, it was his fifth season.
Chris Jones, it was his third season.
And DeForest Buckner, it was his third season.
So it would be ahead of schedule for Jalen Carter to get there.
At the same time, he had six sacks last year.
He figures to be the best or the most important player on the defense this year.
I expect them to try to build things around his skill set.
And so, yeah, I think it's a good goal to set if a little bit of a reach.
I don't think it's crazy.
Certainly not crazy.
Okay.
episode's almost over
Should I tell you my softball story?
Let's go one more mailback question
And what do you have?
I've been dominating here.
Oh, I always enjoy
a way and now you frame it.
Okay.
So here you go.
This is a good question from Jeremy Lupowitz,
but I was going to,
it's sort of similar to the exercise
we're doing on tomorrow's episode
where we're going to draft teams
based on one player per team in the NFL.
Sure.
So I'm going to,
I'm going to give you a little peck nest migrate here.
Multiple chest piece edition of peck nest migrate.
Biggest impact in 2024.
Covey as wide receiver three,
DeGine as slot cornerback,
Becton as guard.
I'm not sure I understand the framing.
How is the biggest impact?
Yeah, would it be.
Covey as the slot receiver,
the gene as the slot cornerback
or beckton as the guard.
I think you would nest DeGine as the slot corner.
I think you would peck
beckton as the right.
guard that means a one game cameo and then and then you migrate Covey as
wide receiver three I think that's probably the right answer yeah I'm with you
there I guess you could you could if you love Bechton you could argue that
beckton and right guard is the nest sure sure what do you what are you frantically
looking up no I I want to give a shout out to Britten Covey is a golf tournament this
weekend nice sponsoring a very good cause in out in Utah and I was just
looking for the specifics of that call
So how about you tell your softball story, then I will.
All right.
This is hanging on my conscience.
I want to get your tick.
Playing shortstop?
Yes.
We're winning by, I think we're winning by two runs at this point, something like that.
Close game.
First and second, nobody out.
It's probably fourth or fifth inning.
And first and second, nobody out.
I said that.
Rocket towards me, just a ball that is just smoked right at me.
And in those milliseconds, my lizard brain takes over.
And I'm not so proud of this, but I let the ball hit my glove and drop and turn two.
Tag the player on second and step on the base, as opposed to just catching the ball.
Violation or not.
So it's kind of like an infield fly roll type situation.
Yeah.
I mean, there's nothing against it.
Yeah, a little bit of a violation.
But if it was a baseball game, I would have deserved to get thrown at.
Yeah, a little bit of a violation.
A little bit of a violation, yeah.
I don't feel great about it.
Yeah, I, um, no.
First off, catch the ball.
Well, I mean, I did what was right for the team in theory.
I mean, last week you were upset that the people weren't, um, you know, swinging.
I know, I told you.
Yeah.
If I had had a day to think about it while the ball was in the air, I would have probably
decided to just catch the ball and move on.
But my instincts took over.
You're sheer competitor.
You play to win the game.
Yeah, that's like, yeah, that's like when we do split squad drafts and you're not
building the best team.
You're building a team to beat me, right?
Similar to that.
So, yeah, I would catch the ball.
Now, it was not, it was not like, it was not egregious to the point of like, I catch
the ball and then drop the ball.
You know, I did, I made it look good.
Mm-hmm.
But, yeah, I didn't feel great about it.
We did get the win.
It's important.
You know, we got back on track.
But yeah, I would have been chirping if someone on the other team had done that, I would say.
I'm not proud of it.
I imagine you would be.
Yeah.
Yeah.
How did the game go overall?
It's good.
We got the W back on track.
Okay.
How'd you hit?
Three for three.
Good to get another Long Dong Ding Dong Johnson first of the season.
That's a home run.
Yeah.
Okay.
Long Dong Ding Dong Johnson.
Is that what you called it?
That's what I called it, yeah.
Say that?
Can you say that?
Long dong ding dong Johnson.
Why don't you just say home run?
I didn't.
Yeah.
What does the chat say?
10% violation, heady play, quick thinking.
I feel like the majority of them are on your side.
On my side?
Yeah.
Are you an arrogant
Shrutter?
No, no, head down, get a little pace, yeah.
I was watching the Padres game last night,
Padres Nationals game.
And so first inning,
you know, there's all these,
there's a lot going on.
Mike Schild, the manager of the Padres,
he gets thrown out because McKenzie Gore.
McKenzie Gore hits Jerks and Profar,
okay?
Did you watch the game at all?
No.
Okay.
And then Mani Machado, like, boom.
A no doubt or home run.
A no doubtor, what?
Long dong, dingong,
Johnson.
I don't know.
Yeah,
just,
and I called a no doubtor,
right?
Okay.
Like,
I mean,
I think there's a time and a place to pimp it.
Yeah.
No,
no,
I'm saying,
and ProFar,
who got hit.
Yeah.
Okay.
ProFar was,
was rounding these bases in the most like to mon,
like,
like you would think that this was Bobby Thompson.
Right.
Okay,
because ProFar was pissed that he just got hit.
Sure.
And,
and he's,
I saw some tweets about it.
Okay, yeah.
I mean, I'm watching in real time.
Keeper Ruiz has to get held back, right?
Yeah, I was watching in real time.
And I was like, whoa, there has to be something going on between these teams.
I didn't know if because McKenzie Gore was a former Patriot's prospect, that there was something more to it.
Anyways, I don't know how relevant that is to our audience here, but I was watching the Padres Nats game last night.
Okay.
I wouldn't see Adam Mazur pitch.
And what did you think?
His command was better this time, but he had a rough third inning, a rough second inning.
A rough second inning at four runs.
Anyways, the golf tournament for Brickon Covey, it's honoring Bridew Up Hope that Rachel Covey Foundation.
Rachel was Britten Covey's cousin who passed way over a decade ago after suffering from depression and anxiety.
And this foundation uses equestrian to help girls and women deal with wide-ranging issues, including anxiety,
depression, trauma, and abuse.
Sounds like a very worthy cause.
Yeah.
All right.
Well, that'll do it for what some people are calling the worst episode ever of the P.H.O.I. Eagles
podcast.
But others are just calling just another midweek mailbag, baby.
Great alliteration, right?
Just another midweek mail bag.
That voice is at it again.
You got to give me that.
Joya just did it for you.
Joya knows more music than I do.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm not a music guy.
All right.
Well, that'll do it for this episode.
everybody for watching and listening.
Make sure that you hit that thumbs down button.
Don't.
Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't.
I'm going away next week.
I promise you, I'm going to be on vacation,
reading, like, YouTube comments for every show.
So please don't do the thumbs down button, yes.
Please don't.
Yes.
Just don't tell your friends about the episode.
This was not a bad episode.
I thought the Joan Carter conversation was really good.
We're very excited about the draft tonight.

So that'll...
You said who the guest is.
Well,
could be Fran Dunphy.
I would cancel my vacation
to come in for Fran Dunphy.
Would you?
I love Fran Dunphy.
Would you...
What would Emily's reaction be?
You say, Emily,
by the way, I'm not coming on vacation.

former or I guess current
college basketball coach coming in.

for Fran Donvian and actually Fran
came to a book signing I had one time
and purchased a book.

Very nice guy.
