Starting point is 00:00:00 Diamondbacks have a tough road ahead in 2026, but MLB.com is predicting that manager Tori Lovalo could be a contender for his second NL manager of the year award if this team makes the playoffs. And we agree. We're talking about it right now. Don't you go anywhere. And welcome in to another edition of the PHNX feedback podcast from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K. Welcome in, guys. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of the PHNX, also occasionally known as one of the Mario Bros. others. Indeed, happy Mario Day to those of you that celebrate. None of these kids know anything about that. None of that all ask me what's Mario Day. How do you know what Mario Day is?
Starting point is 00:00:50 Am I insane? Doesn't everybody celebrate Mario Day? Don't we all go buy Nintendo products today and have a great time skipping work? And playing our switches? I don't know. Maybe that's just me. I tried to do that, but this guy reels me back in. He was like, Derek, we have work to do. Put your switch away. That guy is the one and only game and dog on the ones who twos, aka Damon Farrell. and good morning to you and thanks for ruining Mario Day. Wow. I mean, that seems like... Look, I got my Mario Kart shirt on.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I got my freaking Rainbow Road shoes on. Like, what are we doing? You're bringing me down. No, I mean, I was about to say, it feels like this is like a divorceable type of offense here. The fact that I'm ruining Mario Day for you. It's like you're, it's your one day. You ask for one day out of the year, Derek, and I'm ruining it. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:01:35 It's fine. It's not like I was, I was born in March of 1981. And if you check the facts, so was Mario Mario. Mario was born in March of 81 because that is when Donkey Kong came out and he is the protagonist in that video game, if you remember. Or antagonist because if you're a donkey con fan, you could see how that little mustache creep just ruined his life all the time. He's just trying to hang out with Princess Peach. Actually, it wasn't her. It was Pauline. Different girl, whole other like lore that I got to get into.
Starting point is 00:02:06 But of course, we're talking baseball and we have a lot of it to talk about. the World Baseball Classic rolls on if you guys had a chance to join us for our watch-along last night. We had a blast watching Team USA beat Team Mexico. We wish we would have seen a little bit better of a performance out of Alec Thomas and Team Mexico. But they did make it close. Eventually, Team USA, though, was too much to overcome. And they won by a score of five to three. We'll get into that here shortly.
Starting point is 00:02:31 But first, we have our spring training updates. And I know everybody is so enthralled with what is going on in spring training that you all need your updates when it comes to that. You guys forgot those games were happening, admit it. Anyway, the Diamondbacks did beat the Mariners yesterday who have their all own internal strife thing going on now between Randy a Rosarina and Cowrally, which again, we will get into here shortly. But the D-backs once again beat the Mariners this time two to one in walk-off fashion. In fact, they won in the bottom of the ninth inning with Adrian Rodriguez hitting a two-out, go-ahead single that scored the winning run and brought back the good times to the Diamondbacks who kind of got beat up over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:03:13 But Zach Gallen made his second spring start, and that was very encouraging. He went three perfect innings with three strikeouts. So I guess we're back to the conversation of maybe Zach Gallen should start on opening day, and maybe I should shut my big mouth about making a push for Ryan Nelson to be there. I don't know. Again, I doubt that spring performance really matters that much. But overall, it feels like Zach Gallen has been really good here out of the gate. And, you know, there's some very encouraging things, including the fact that accurately,
Starting point is 00:03:47 accurately, Zach Gallen did in fact hit 95.7 miles per hour with his fastball. That's very good. That's very, very good. It shows Zach has some of that velo back on his fastball. And it's very encouraging, considering that this is just his second spring start. And he's already hitting 95.7 miles per hour. hour, right? Good things there, and I am excited to see what Zach Allen can do in 2026. We doubt a lot because of guys having bad seasons or even trending in the wrong direction, like some of the
Starting point is 00:04:21 veterans that the Diamondbacks brought over in a Nolan Aronado or Carlos Santana, right? I'm still of the belief that a lot of these guys are going to have somewhat of a rejuvenation here in 2026. Maybe nothing crazy, nothing overpowering, but perhaps if Gallen can be more of what he was in the second half as we discussed, more of what he was after he was not traded away from this team, then perhaps Gallen can slot back in as being this team's ace, the thing that we always thought he was going to be for the Diamondbacks. Damon, I will say this. One thing I do think of with Zach is can you imagine if we did trade him? We talked about those numbers. We showed you those stats. imagine if we traded Zach Gallin and then he put up the best numbers of his season post trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:05:09 I mean, it just goes to show that like it happens and it happened when you kept him. But could you imagine if we would have traded him and watching him do that for some other team? It would have felt very classic debacks. Oh, it would have felt so classic debacks. Like we didn't really have that with Gino and we didn't really have that with Merrill, but we totally had that with Josh Naylor who went off to Seattle and became the love of that fan base's life. And the love of that dog Tucker's life, by the way, as well out there at Peoria Sports Complex. But speaking of the Mariners, the Diamondbacks had a good showing here overall against a depleted Mariners lineup.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I'm not going to act like, you know, the Diamondbacks were facing Rally or Julio Rodriguez or, you know, Josh Naylor, even. None of these guys were in the Mariners lineup. But DeBax relievers Juan Morillo, Andrew Hoffman, Tefillo, Tefilo, Tifilo, excuse me, Mendez, Taylor Clark, Herardo Carrillo, and Casey Anderson combined for one run and five hits with 10 strikeouts once Zach Gallen left the game. Juan Morillo, zero earned runs in one inning of work. He hit 99.5 with his fastball yesterday, so that's fun to see. Andrew Hoffman did have the one earned run in one and two-thirds innings pitched.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Mendez zero earned runs in a third of an inning. Taylor Clark, zero earn runs in an inning. Cadillo, zero earn runs in an inning pitch, and then Casey Anderson close things out with zero earn runs in his inning of work. Paven Smith, one for three with one RBI. Not a lot of offense to talk about, but still a good victory for this team. A close victory. More importantly, I'm focusing less on the offense of this team during spring training and more on who is emerging as bullpen arms. Taylor Clark has looked really good so far.
Starting point is 00:06:58 There's Juan Modillo, another guy that's looked good, even though he did have a bad outing. against the Dodgers who the Diamondbacks face today. So the Diamondbacks do face the Dodgers for the second and final time this spring before they meet on opening day on March 26th at Dodgers Stadium. Brandon Fott is set to make his second spring start after making his first on March 4th against the athletics. In that game, he didn't allow a run in two and a third innings pitched, gave up one hit, struck out one.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Jordan Lawler has now hit safely in three straight games. He's batting 364 this spring. he has a double a home run and two RBI in those three straight games. I don't know. I know that some of these guys are coming back down to earth. I know that, you know, this isn't the same performance, but still the fact that he in three games is four for 11 with a home run, a multi, you know, an extra base hit and a couple of RBI
Starting point is 00:07:53 is very encouraging still about Jordan Lawler and how ready he will be to face Major League pitching, how ready he will be, to be in center field for this team. And I mean, at the end of the day, if things don't work out for Lawler, which I'm doubtful. Like, I don't think it's going to be a complete disaster. I don't feel like, right?
Starting point is 00:08:13 Is that safe to say even from someone that's been a bit of a doubter, Damon, after seeing him play in spring training, that you feel like he is at least putting together enough that you feel encouraged of his ability to hold down the position until Lordis Gouriel potentially returns, which shouldn't be too long? Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, this has been an encouraging spring for Jordan Lawler. Absolutely. So, yeah, I mean, I have some form of expectations at this point.
Starting point is 00:08:39 I think it'd be unfair to say that, like, I'm expecting nothing, you know? And I feel like that's changed for us over the month. We both had our doubts. I definitely had my doubts. And I know you had more than doubts when it came to Lawler switching positions to the outfield and being a center fielder for this team. It was more about that was my biggest issue was like, why are we moving Alec to the corner so that we could teach this guy how to play center field. Right. I don't know what, I don't know what that is. I don't know what that is because
Starting point is 00:09:05 theoretically, isn't it easier to play a corner? Yeah, that's, that's why it was so mind-blowing to me. It made no sense. But is the real reason athleticism that it's harder to play center field so that they feel at Jordan with his length and his speed can just cover center field better than he can pick up the intricacies of a ballpark, the corners? Yeah, but Chase Field is really, really awkward when it comes to those corners, right? It is, but it's also like the, like the deep sea in center field, you know? It feels like the center field just continues in chase field for miles and miles and miles. And I don't know. I like the current guy we have out there to track down those baseballs. That's fair. He's shown a lot of, I feel like, Alec Thomas has been
Starting point is 00:09:46 the guy when it comes to tracking down deep hits in the chase field center field. I have my doubts about this being a permanent switch, but I do think that if Lawler is out there, he's going to be in center field. That's what I feel like, right? So it's like, it might not be for very long because once Lourdes returns, Lourdes is in left, Alec is in center, and Corbin isn't right. But again, in other instances where Lourdes might get a day off or Corbin might get a day off, you might see Alec be the one to switch
Starting point is 00:10:14 instead of necessarily Jordan Lawler switching to one of those positions to fill in, right? You'll see Jordan just inserted back in center. That's all based on if he has success. Having success at Salt River Fields and Center Field is far different than having success at Chasefield. that porch is a nightmare it's a disaster i can't stand it i don't even know how anybody does it sitting under there walking under it when we're on the field i just look up at it every single time
Starting point is 00:10:40 and think man what is this why did they do this you know think about it i mean there's not a lot of ballparks that have that kind of feature you know that weird porch type type feature so i don't know but push it back get it out there i don't like it uh i will say though that i'm excited to see brandon fought on the mound today. Also excited to still see Ryan Waldschmidt in the lineup, even though he has been reassigned to minor league camp. He's posted a pair of three hit performances over his last four games. He has two doubles, two RBI, and a walk. So Waldie still getting the job done, even though he is kind of out of the running, at least for now, for one of those outfield positions. But shout out to Book's Journey with the super chat.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Book's Journey says, after being called a Lawler stand on yesterday's watch along, which I abhor, I will forego showing any more support until it's socially acceptable. Does he mean? mean support for us or support for Jordan Lawler? I think support for Jordan Lawler. He's here in the chat. He's here in the chat. But we love our guy Books Journey. Oh, love our guy Books Journey.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Ball Nower. Ball Nower. And no, Books Journey. I was actually asking for people to plant their flag in the Jordan Lawler sweepstakes right now so that it was. I got the L on today. Yeah. So that it's not like, you know, down the road when he's, you know, hitting 300 being like,
Starting point is 00:11:52 I always believed and you never put your name on it. And you have. So I was giving you credit, honestly. I believe in Jordan Lawler, mostly because he's nice to me. So if you are a ball player and you want me to praise you, just be nice to be in the clubhouse. I mean, he is a sweetheart. Oh, he's one of the best. It's, I don't know, there's certain people.
Starting point is 00:12:11 It's like I was saying about O'Dog on the watchalong yesterday. O'Dong, sincerely, one of the best human beings that I come across at Salt Riverfield. I love just how kind he is to strangers and to everybody. Like, he's just the great. Again, this is, it feels personal. I know. This is what you keep doing to me where you're like, and in Pardomo, I mean, Damon, if you just got the chance to meet him, he's just so special to be around.
Starting point is 00:12:37 He is though. He is. Yeah, but this is what you do. You pick all my favorite debacks ever and you're like, Harardo Parra is just a sweetheart, Damon. You would love him if you ever got the chance to know him. Ryan Walshman has aura. You can see it.
Starting point is 00:12:53 It glows off of him. But again, guys are going to be out there. playing the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch. That game starts shortly after we wrap on this show. So, of course, make sure if you go out there, you sit on the right side because you will bake in that sun. And I don't care if it's cloudy out or not, you're going to bake in that sun out there. Speaking of baking and facilities and ballparks, Diamondbacks did a great job yesterday of just celebrating the fact that they have hit at a historic landmark when it comes to giving back to the community and supporting, charities across Arizona. It was D-BAC's Give-Back Day yesterday, and they have hit $100 million
Starting point is 00:13:34 in giving in support of communities across Arizona. They have earned a place among professional sports most impactful philanthropic, philanthropic organizations in fewer than three decades, reaching a historic milestone of $100 million in giving through their signature, DeVax Give Back approach and investment in communities across Arizona. Look, I mean, there were so many charities and organizations that were out there yesterday, just celebrating the fact that the Diamondbacks have been. So influential in giving back and supporting to the community. It's another reason why it's hard to quantify in this case.
Starting point is 00:14:12 The Diamondbacks, you know, leaving the state, Damon, because we talked about that back when all of those worries and concerns were coming up. And, you know, I really do think that. that there are things like this that are forgotten about a, you know, major league sports team leaving your city, including how much good they can do for community, for your, you know, for everybody, right? Yeah. No doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:14:41 One thing, Derek, I would, you know, I know that this is maybe, maybe not the direction you were looking to take this in, but I'm going to do it anyways. Oh, please do. One thing I'd like to see a little bit more is D-BAC's involvement in other places in Arizona. I know that they have that wall in the, what is? it right center field where they have like all of the different little league parks that they've oh yeah yeah that they've like that they've like built the debacks have built and whatnot when you look at that wall it's a it's a shocking amount of like Scottsdale little league and you're like
Starting point is 00:15:14 did they really need the deep back spot it is that word paradise valley little league and you're like I think they could have afforded to renovate their field on their own. Like, let's get some, let's get some help in maybe some of the smaller places in Arizona. That's fair. There's a very, there's a lot of communities that could help. And everybody loves the debacks here. Like the debacks, I feel like are like the one team that is almost like kind of captured the state where maybe the sons as well. But the the sons and the debacks like I think have a good control of everybody rooting for them.
Starting point is 00:15:47 And so I'd like to see maybe a little bit more like let's get into like maybe some of the. How about in the northeast part of the state where there's a lot of Native American reservations? That would be really cool to see if they could maybe build some fields out there or go down into southern Arizona and help some people out there. So I'd like to see them expand it out a little bit more. But they do great work in the community. There's no question about that. And we love to have this organization here, obviously. I mean, me and you wouldn't have jobs without them.
Starting point is 00:16:16 That's fair. Yeah, that's fair. My livelihood is kind of based on baseball being here. but I also think that, again, it's easy to always see a sports organization as being some sort of greedy entity that's trying to take public funds and use them just to make money off of them without ever disclosing how much money they make. The Diamondbacks overall are pretty transparent organization. And I feel like between this, you know, work they do for communities and charities as well as the fact that just on a operational standpoint, they invest so much of their revenue back into their team that it's hard to, default the Diamondbacks and it's hard to say that they're not a well-ran organization. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:54 I think as currently constituted, they're probably, and even though you haven't made the playoffs the last couple of years, like you probably are in the upper echelon of organizations in baseball currently. Like top 10 and the fringe of the top 10, I would argue. Right. But then at the same time, they don't have the pedigree, the history, or the fan base that other organizations that have been around for like 100 years have, right? Or at least a lot of organizations that have been around for 50 plus years. Longer than 100, some of them.
Starting point is 00:17:19 Yeah, that's true as well, right? So I think that, again, the fact that that that impacts the fact that they're not able to make as much money as a Dodgers or Yankees or other big, you know, franchises, big teams, right? But hopefully with time that changes and hopefully with our new business daddy that also has a stake in Walmart, we can spend all the money. Screw your salary cap. Let's blow this thing through the roof. I'm getting ready to, you know, like let's go on a shopping spree, Derek, you know? Yeah, let's go crazy. I got Walton money back in me.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Let's do it. Oh, we got some breaking news here per Steve Gilbert. According to our guy Michael Dixon in the chat, we'll have to verify this. I trust Michael Dixon. I trust Michael Dixon very much. With my life. He is a reliable source and he's sourcing a reliable source. So it's a source and a source per Steve Gilbert.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Corbyn will DH tomorrow. We just talked about this yesterday, Damon. Needing to get 10 games in, I was very suspicious of the idea that Corbyn would need to get in this week. So that correlates with that because there's no way that they're going to have Corbyn Carroll with an injury play 10 games in a row, right? Like they're going to need Corbyn to have multiple days off between now and opening day if he does indeed plan on getting in 10 games. So him D-Hing tomorrow makes all the sense in the world and that is very exciting to see. Very, let's go. So yeah, we got that. Corby and Carol.
Starting point is 00:18:51 He we I regret to inform everybody. We've never been more back. Oh my God. You're all I'm Let me fix my tie. Yeah, fix your tie back. We've never been more back. Put them on notice, Damon. Put them on notice. Well, uh, we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break. We are going to talk a little WBC updates, including, uh, Dominican Republic beating the breaks off of Israel and, uh, what team USA did to T-Mexico making, uh, bringing Alec Thomas back down to earth a little bit, uh, you know, he was only hitting against the guy named Paul for the majority of that game. But we'll do all that on the other side of this break.

Well, Damon, we had a blast with our World Baseball Classic watch-along last night. And of course, we have so much more World Baseball Classic action still to come, including our watch-along for the championship game next Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:21:52 So make sure to join us for that. Mark it on your calendars right now. Yeah, right now. Set a reminder. Tell Siri. We got some big teams moving on. We got teams eliminated. The Dominican Republic beat Israel 10 to 1.
Starting point is 00:22:07 10 runs, seven hits for the Dominican Republic. Ketalmarte was 0 for 3 with a walk, currently hitting 143 with a 748 OPS in World Baseball Classic play. It's disappointing. You would love to see our guys doing well. of them are necessarily killing it in the WBC. But I would argue that let's get these, let's get this out of the way. Let's get, let's get the bad performances in games that matter out of the way now.
Starting point is 00:22:35 So that when the regular season comes, Marte and Perdomo are red hot. Right. Yeah. That's how I see it. Feel, say that OPS one more time? 748. I mean, that's not a bad OPS. No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:22:48 But Perdom, meanwhile, doesn't have a game. He's walking. He's walking a lot. He is. tell he's getting on base a ton in that in that two games ago he was like oh for one with like two runs scored an rbi i two walks like he he had himself a decent game it just didn't look great on paper and then as far as per domo he's been sick now he got sick and scratch from the lineup so he was in yesterday's game he was over two with a sack fly an rbi and two walks i mean that's a good
Starting point is 00:23:14 game still still that's a jerry game he just doesn't have a hit yet in w bcc play but jerry doesn't need hits. He needs walks and you to put a runner on third base with less than two out so he can push something into the outfield. Look, he doesn't need to do anything when you have Fernando Tatis Jr. hitting a grand slam and having six RBI. O'Neill Cruz going two for two with a home run and two walks and Bray and Bello. Bayo? I don't know. How would we say it in America here? Bayo or Bello? He's the winning pitcher there for the Dominican Republic. Carlos Santana won for four with the run scored in a walk. He's hitting 200 with a 533 OPS. That sounds very Carlos Santana-ish, in fact.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Dominican Republic, Damans Dominicana, improves to 3-0 and has clinched a quarter-final birth. Israel's loss eliminates them from contention. Meanwhile, we got Columbia staying alive. They beat Panama by a score of four to three. They stay alive in Pool A heading into the final games. Great Britain stays alive with a win over Brazil, 8 to 1. And, of course, Brazil has been relegated out of the tournament, gone forever. Great Britain stays alive in Pool B.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Puerto Rico, again, we were monitoring last night and watching while we were doing our watch-along for Team USA versus Team Mexico. Puerto Rico wins four to one. Still seems like an unfair advantage for them to be holding these games in San Juan. Big, big time presence there for the Puerto Rican fans. They had four runs on six hits.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Cuba had one run on two hits. Strong pitching overall here. Aronado, O for four, with a strikeout. Puerto Rico clinches a quarterfinal spot with the win. Venezuela. They have also clinched a quarterfinal spot as well. They beat Nicarago 4 to 0. And then our watch along last night. We got Team USA beating Team Mexico by a score of 5 to 3. Aaron Judge was a beast in this game. Paul Skeens was almost unhittable. And it really shows that the only weakness for Team USA is their stars not playing. Right?
Starting point is 00:25:12 like Terrick Scobble is reportedly leaving the team now. Paul Skeens, not sure if he'll factor in in any big games. I mean, I feel like the Team USA would have him for like the semifinal. But I don't even know if that's the case. But Aaron Judge, he was incredible in the outfield. He was incredible at the plate. The man's a giant. And I still, Damon and I discussed on the watch along quite a bit,
Starting point is 00:25:37 just the idea that Aaron Judge slipped to the Yankees when he did. But that's a whole other discussion. made some impressive plays there in right field though two for three home run two rbi to walk paul skein's dominant on the mound for team usa in four innings pitched he gave up one hit no earned runs he walked one and struck out seven and he was held to the 65 pitch limit that the wbc holds teams or pitchers two in this round in the pool play round once we advance to the semifinals that increases and then once we get or excuse me to the quarterfinals and the semi-finals, those pitch count numbers increase. But USA improves to 3 and O and Pool B, and they are on the
Starting point is 00:26:19 cusp of advancing here. They have a game tonight against Italy, and they will advance with a win over that. Canada, meanwhile, still alive. They need a win over Team Puerto Rico in order for them to have their quarterfinal dreams stay alive. And the DR and Venezuela are playing each other for dominance and pool seating. So there's that. Teams that have been eliminated are all the teams we suspected would be eliminated outside of Australia. Australia eliminated. Chinese Taipei eliminated. Brazil, Nicaragua, Netherlands, and Israel all eliminated. Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Japan, and South Korea have all advanced to the quarterfinals. So really at this point, it's just about Team USA advancing,
Starting point is 00:27:05 right? That's the one. And then we need the other Pool A member looking like it could be Canada, but Canada, again, has a very difficult task here in my tiny island of Puerto Rico, which stands in their way. But yeah, this, there's been some, there was some fun. Alec Thomas, unfortunately, not, did not have a strong night. He was 0 for four with three strikeouts, including recording the final out, right? Damon, that was Alec Thomas. We were hoping for a huge moment there, and we didn't get it, unfortunately. But the biggest moment coming out of this game is drama between teammates. We had a moment that is being kind of,
Starting point is 00:27:46 there's video of it, it's kind of being discussed and expanded upon, and we might have problems in Seattle. We might have some problems with the Mariners. Randy Rosarina, team Mexico, comes up to bat, his teammate Cal Rally, behind the plate catching.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Randy goes to shake his hand. Cal says some things, very similar. to the Robbie Perkins situation with Australia when he refused to shake the player, the batter from Cheki his hand, right? Seemed like a competitive thing. Seemed like just in the moment,
Starting point is 00:28:23 you're that team, I'm this team. In fact, some have gone on to say that the reason why Cal Raleigh didn't want to shake his hand, Damon, was due to Pintar. That Randy Rosarina's hands are sticky and that the WBC is very, very, very, strict about stuff being on the ball. So there's a good chance that if he did that and got something on his hand, it could transfer
Starting point is 00:28:47 to the ball, which could then transfer to the pitcher. At least that was the excuse I'm sure Mariners fans were making to not blow this situation out of proportions. However, however, there was an interview with Randy or Rosarina in Spanish that my friends over at Seattle on tap translated. might have translated poorly. They did use an app to do so, but they did also get confirmation from other people
Starting point is 00:29:14 that this is a accurate translation of Randy Arosarina's answers from this interview. He was asked about this situation with Cal Raleigh, and Arroserina said the following, and Damon, this is going to probably fire you up. He said, to Cal Raleigh, how should I say it? I want to say it to him in four languages. First, I'll say it in Spanish.
Starting point is 00:29:36 Look, first of all, the only one, only things he needs to do is thank God he has good parents. His parents are very well educated. Thank God. I was able to see them at the hotel two days ago and they came to say hello and gave me a hug. The rest, I'm going to say, like, I'm going to say it like a Cuban. Honestly, he can go to hell. To the Mexicans, he can go to hell. And in English, I'll say it in English, that good to see you, he said to me, he can shove it up his ass. But then, Damon, he also gave like this coy little smile as he walked away and I will say something in regards to my Spanish-speaking heritage and my family members and friends. We talk a lot of trash and we do it in a way where it's
Starting point is 00:30:23 kind of like this, but it's meant to be funny. And this may have just been taken out of context and may have just been Randy or Rosarina just kind of being sarcastic. However, at the same time, this if you if you take this at face value this very much seems like like a problem um and i don't know i mean jarmy strong says isn't the trash talking part of the love yeah and and and i mean that might be this that might be this whole thing i mean derrick and i say disgusting things to each other i think so much yeah more than most people in my life yeah and yet i'm closer to him than anyone else and I love him more than oh we we would die for each other it's Cosmo hate Damon my wife and then I mean if I'm being honest and it's Blaze Alexander and then my kid
Starting point is 00:31:20 down here but that's the top five they're in the top five but yeah no I mean you you do you say a lot you talk a lot of trash there I will say it in watching the video he was smiling kind of the whole time, right? So I don't know. I honestly don't know. And I think that this, if it is just trash talking and it is just fun, then I love it. And if it's not, then I also love it because it's going to bring down a team that's entirely too good right now and cause them to have a broken, broken clubhouse over this. Yeah. No, seriously, it's it better be a joke because if it's not, like, that's crazy. Right. And see, I'm with I'm with book's journey. He says the vibes are too high in Seattle right now. He was being sarcastic. I think he totally was. Right.
Starting point is 00:32:06 And I mean, again, this is this is also very pro wrestling. Like to know that someone's going to talk trash to you in the media and that you're going to hear it and then you're just going to laugh, then that's all, it's all in good fun. But I mean, it's it's just crazy. Like the way that the AP wrote it, it does seem like as Ernesto says that he was being kind of serious. Yeah. The AP writer in, you know, AP Associated Press, like that's as big J journalism as it gets. They're not going to be like, oh, he was joking and laughing about it and then put in their like. Like he used profane Mexican and Cuban, you know, terms to describe the situation.
Starting point is 00:32:43 It's like, no, it sounds like he was a little bit upset. I know. I mean, yeah, I think so. And I think that like. I'm leaning towards he's upset, honestly. I, there are things about like saying he can go to hell. I mean, and saying it twice, like, that definitely makes me feel. I mean, I do tell.
Starting point is 00:33:00 I tell you to go to hell every day. I mean, yeah. Go to hell. I tell you to shove it up your ass every day. You go, hey, Damon, I got a stat graphic in there. Go to hell, Derek. Oh, yeah. No, this morning I was like, Damon, there's dead people buried underneath
Starting point is 00:33:14 Tropicana Field. He's all, go to hell. I'm like, this is supporting your theory about Chase Field the whole time. We're going to talk about that. Don't think we're not going to talk about that. But World Baseball Classic, again, it rolls on. We got some very important games coming up, like I said. And it continues to be an absolute blast to watch.
Starting point is 00:33:32 So now I'm more excited for this to wrap up here in the very first round. And I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm more excited to have more drama. You know, like I said yesterday, we had a player attacking his manager. That was, and on the, on the Panama team, literally, a player went after his manager. We have teammates causing drama and fighting, infighting. We have catchers refusing to shake people's hands. I love every minute of it. Let's get nasty. Let's, this was supposed to be about peace and unity. You know what I said. Ah, not me. That's not what I want. I want this to buy us further as a world. And that's what it's doing. God bless the world baseball classic. But we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break,
Starting point is 00:34:15 we are going to talk about MLB.com naming a certain Diamondback as a potential award winner for 2026. And no, it's not that one. And no, it's not that one. And no, it's not even that one. We're going to talk about it on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the P.HNX Diamondback show. Hopefully you are never involved in a serious accident or have a serious injury. But if you are ever in that situation, make sure you contact the husband and wife law team. First, the lawyer you hire does matter.
Starting point is 00:34:45 Mark and Alexis Breyer are the husband and wife law team. And let's face it, after a serious injury, you want to hire an attorney that's focused on your best outcome, not their best outcome and not how much money the firm makes. That's the husband and wife law team. This team brings together hundreds of years of experience and they have multiple certified specialists in personal injury and wrongful death. And in Arizona, that is not easy to come by.
Starting point is 00:35:06 The state bar is certified less than one. 1% of all lawyers as specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation. And this is why this practice is 100% dedicated to injury and wrongful death experience and specialize and equipped with the expertise to handle every aspect of your case. Now, they can't guarantee the outcome of your case. However, there are promises that they are proud to make to you as their client. And that includes that you will receive as much in your pocket as they receive for their fee, even if they have to reduce their attorney fees to do so.
Starting point is 00:35:32 You may speak to one of their lawyers as often as you choose about anything you want to discuss. and you have the right to trust as your lawyer, they will tell you both the strengths and weaknesses of your claim so that you can make informed decisions. If you've had a serious injury, call the husband and wife law team first at 602-783-8-8-4-1 or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them Ph&X sent you.
Starting point is 00:35:54 And if you are looking to upgrade your hat game or get your brand to stand apart from the crowd, look no further than branded bills. They have a wide variety of hats, including hats for U of A&ASU, which we're watching the ASU team advance right now and guys are having a fun watch party out there. They have some amazing ASU hats
Starting point is 00:36:12 and you of A hats as part of their campus collection. They also have some incredible Phoenix Suns hats as well. But if you more importantly want to have your logo, your brand on a hat or on a shirt or on a bag, you can look to branded bills. Their dedicated team will help you create the exact custom apparel order you need. Whether it's snapbacks, trucker hats, fitted hats, beanieies,
Starting point is 00:36:30 it doesn't matter. They got you covered with performance and with style. They're a local company from right here Mesa, Arizona, so it always feels great to shop local and support local. Head on over to Brandebills.com, whether you are looking to make that custom order or just looking for a new hat and use our code of BBPHNX for 15% off your first order. Well, MLB.com is out here searching for content just like we are, and they're putting together their predictions for the 2026 season and who will win awards, at least who in
Starting point is 00:37:02 each division will be a contender for awards. And obviously in the NL West, it wasn't hard to scroll down and immediately see Shohayotani as the NL West representative for most valuable player and other Dodgers named, you know, for potential all-star players. But when I saw, or awards, but when I saw that the Diamondbacks were going to be included, my immediate assumption was that once again, Ryan Waldschmidt was going to be predicted to win an award or to be very good in the 2026 season, probably being nominated as the NL West's, you know, potential rookie of the year contender. Instead, what I came across is that MLB.com is saying that Tori LaVolo is going to be a
Starting point is 00:37:48 contender for the NL Manager of the Year award once again in 2026. And it comes with a very important caveat that I think we could all agree with. And it's probably easy to say this. He did go on to say that Tori Lavallo is the winningest manager in Diamondbacks history. But again, if he can get them in the playoffs this year, he will have a terrific case. And Tori Lavallo overall would have a terrific case, I think, if he was able to get this team, this rag-tag team. Now, one thing I will say is that in this article, Damon, the part I skipped over, is that he said he's the winningest manager in Diamondback's history,
Starting point is 00:38:37 but he has never won one of these. I'm afraid MLB.com doesn't know ball, because Toyo Lavello was honored as the NL manager of the year back in 2017. So this would be his second NL manager of the year. So not to correct the article or big brain anyone here, but it's kind of easy to stat check that. But overall, the idea of Tori Lovolo winning the manager of the year award makes sense because this team, as it is currently put together,
Starting point is 00:39:04 is a team that is going to be right there as far as a playoff spot is concerned once again, but it's a team that right now is projected to be about a game or two under 500 just like they were last year, maybe even right at 500, depending on which projection website you're looking at. But for the most part, the Diamondbacks are projected to be right around 500 once again,
Starting point is 00:39:28 but not above 500 and not to be a team that necessarily makes the playoffs. Their playoff chances are very low. and even though they are projected to be right there around 500, it still seems like it would be a huge surprise to many people if this team was able to get in to the playoffs. After what they did last year and after what they did in 2024, I would argue that it's not a surprise. I would argue that even dating back to 2023,
Starting point is 00:39:54 this team has been much better than they were, especially down the stretch, and at times fumbled the ball. It wasn't about the team not being good enough. It wasn't about the talent not being good enough. It was just a team that seemed to panic and fall apart right at the end, right, as things were about to wrap up instead of having that clutch factor. In 2023, it worked out well for them because even though they weren't able to get in on their own,
Starting point is 00:40:20 they got some help, and then the rest is history. Diamondbacks were incredible. But I will say that with the way that the last two seasons has gone, it shouldn't be a surprise to anybody if the Diamondbacks make the playoffs. But I would agree. that I really feel like with this team, with the expectations being what they are, with this being such a weird, chaotic roster, I don't think a lot of people expect Arizona to be in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:40:47 So if Tori Lovolo finds a way to manage this team to that point, then there is a good chance that he absolutely would be a contender for the National League manager of the year. There's also the fact that you have an expiring contract here with Toy Lovolo. Like, this could be it. I'm not saying this is the end of the line for his career. And I'm not even saying this is the end of the line for his time with the Diamondbacks. But it could be. It could be both of those things.
Starting point is 00:41:17 Could be the end of him being a manager as well as him being a manager of the debacks. Right. This is an all-in year for Lavello. This is an all-in year for the debacks. There's no reason to not believe that this team is going to play in a way where they understand the assignment and want to ensure that if this is Tori Lavalos last year, that they do everything they can to make it memorable and press this team to go as far as it can go.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And when you look at Tori Lavallo's time with the Diamondbacks, he has been a successful manager, but, I mean, the record probably leaves a lot to be desired as far as his overall record with this team. Let's take a look here at his stats. In nine seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tori Lavallo is 664 and 692 for a 490 win percentage. That just seems right.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Like it feels like a lot of the seasons Tori's teams have been around 500. And then we had that very, very bad 2021 season. But also in 2017 and in 2023 there were some amazing surprises. So I don't know. He's 11 and 10 in the postseason for 524 winning percentage. He has 23 ejections. in his career. He has one pennant from 2023 and then the one National League Manager of the year award from 2017. I don't know, Damon. I think that this is a pretty fair and accurate.
Starting point is 00:42:44 I mean, like they kind of almost have to try in this article to give every team in the division something. You know, the Padres, I don't believe got anything. But again, I understand it. I just don't think it's that far-fetched. I really do think that when you look at what the Dodgers can't win and get Dave Roberts a national manager of the year award right like the Dave Roberts almost has to be completely incompetent for that team to lose baseball games well he'd have to go like 150 and 12 to win the manager yeah right yeah I agree with that like like things we've never seen before for sure for sure you're right about that and then you know you got new managers in san Francisco uh relatively new in Colorado new manager there in
Starting point is 00:43:29 Podra in San Diego. So it really makes sense. And Tori Lavello in the NL West would be the manager that has the best shot at being a contender for the 2026 manager of the year award. But I will also say I understand, you know, when you look at that record, when you look at this time with this team, it doesn't blow you away. He just remains, you know, again, a mainstay, not to steal Merrill's, you know, nickname there, but a mainstay here in the valley. And I would. say that Tori is not necessarily a bad manager.
Starting point is 00:44:04 I think that he's been given some pretty bad rosters at times. I think he's had to do his best and I think he's managed his best when as I've said before, he's kind of in that underdog position and has that team believing in themselves in that underdog way
Starting point is 00:44:21 as well. I agree with that. And I think that this roster kind of is like the perfect mix of having the upper echelon talent like the ceiling raisers. with that underdog mentality. Yeah, 100%. We have a lot of guys that have a lot to prove, that are hungry to prove that.
Starting point is 00:44:36 You got these veterans that know that they're better than their 2025 stat showed. You got guys like Carlos Santana who know that there is not a lot of years left for him in baseball. So this is the end of the line for him to try to go out there and do something exciting and do something special, right?
Starting point is 00:44:52 But then you have, you know, so much of this pitching staff that you still feel has potential that they had not reached yet. So I don't know. I mean, I agree with what you're saying. And I think that they do have both the pedigree of talent and the guys that want to shut people up,
Starting point is 00:45:12 want to shut me up, want to shut you up, want to shut a lot of people up out there that are doubting them. And you know what? That's probably the right attitude to have. I would love that. Michael Dixon was wondering or was saying up here how, you know, you've mentioned that there's some players, coaches that will watch the show from time to time. I do wonder what like the nastiest thing I've said about somebody while they were,
Starting point is 00:45:36 them or a family member was watching this show is. Like Paven Smith's mom tuned in one time and I was like, And here's another thing about Paving Smith. You know, it's a weird line we walk. It's a weird line I walk. I have to go into that, you know, into that locker room and face these guys. And I mean, in some cases, even. when I don't think I did anything wrong, you still have players making sure that my little
Starting point is 00:46:01 stupid captions on their videos from live BP's are right and accurate. And I'm not telling the world that Michael Soroka gave up a home run that Lucan Baker when he actually, in fact, did not. So again, I need to retract that. I didn't realize that. So Soroka hit you up and was like, hey, man. Oh, he didn't, he didn't hit me up. I actually just talked to Michael randomly. And he just mentions to be out of nowhere as he's walking away. He's all, by the way, Luke and Baker didn't didn't get a home run off me. By the way, I saw your tweet, and it was completely false, and you're slandering my name. Yeah, basically.
Starting point is 00:46:34 I will be filing formal litigation. My manager and, or my attorney and my agent will be. Mark and Alexis Breyer will be hitting you up very, very shortly. They win all of their cases. I'm going to lose that one. We do have a free agency diehard sale going on right now. Starting point is 00:47:40 and that's okay. I forgive you. I'm glad you're here now. Glad to see you. Deborah, one of my favorite people in here. Damon, you're also one of my favorite people in here and that's because... Am I? You come up, well, sometimes. I would have guessed least favorite in you. It depends. It depends. It depends if we're having one of those passive aggressive days where we're attacking
Starting point is 00:47:56 each other and we don't really know why or if we're just best friends getting coffee together like today see when we get coffee together we usually have a good day and that's when I usually share in your thoughts and ideas and we are like this right and god forbid i ever get coffee without derrick and then he will hold it against me for days days i mean i literally notate in my calendar every single day that you go get coffee with me and we're going to go over it in your monthly review when that comes up but that's a whole other thing uh you have been warning us, Damon, for a very long time about the fact that our sports teams are cursed. And you have said, obviously, that there is a good reason why our sports team are
Starting point is 00:48:37 curse. It's not just random. It's not just a chance that Valley Sports, Arizona Sports, do this to us, break our hearts. It's because we're actually, we put our downtown area on like an Indian burial ground, right? Like American burial. Well, in a way, Derek, our entire state is kind of Native American lands. Yeah. Arizona as a whole. Well, that makes a lot of sense because of course, all of our sports facilities and venues are not located in necessarily the same place.
Starting point is 00:49:16 Yet we seem to have bad luck no matter where these teams are located in this state. And that's because, of course, as you know, we've desecrated ancient Native American land, right? But what we're finding out is even though this has just been a partially verified theory on Damon's behalf, what we have come to know is that this isn't the only baseball stadium that apparently is experiencing their facility being built on possible graves. Because according to St. Petersburg, they are moving forward with a search for possible graves beneath Tropicana Fields parking lot. The city of St. Petersburg approved a nearly $400,000 contract for what they call ground-truthing to investigate possible graves beneath a tropical field parking lot. Researchers believe as many as 10 bodies from a historic cemetery, the Oak Lawn Cemetery, could still be buried under the site. And a council member there in St. Petersburg, council member Corey Givens Jr., is pushing for a historical marker and broader searches in the nearby areas tied to the former
Starting point is 00:50:34 gas plant district. It would appear that they lost track of where in a cemetery used to be in the vicinity of Tropicana Field and at some point just decided to put in a parking lot that covers some of the graves of the deceased that are there. And I would argue, first of all, that when I die, please bury me under a baseball stadium. There is no place I would rather be buried at all. That's like the opposite of like an Indian burial ground. That would be like something I would pay lots of money for and start saving towards right now. My afterlife is going to only bring positive vibes to the Arizona Diamondbacks because that's all I care about.
Starting point is 00:51:18 You know? Right. Right. But I mean, obviously we know the Tampa Bay raise. We know the Tampa Bay Rays are a current franchise. And that doesn't expand the entire state of Florida because those Marlins are inexplicably successful, even though they like to completely revamp the roster every couple of years.
Starting point is 00:51:35 But Damon, again, as I get back to this, this is something that's happening. What's not happening here is us discovering the truth about your theory here that we're cursed as well, right? This is why the storm blew the roof off the Tropicana. this is why the Tampa Bay Rays couldn't win a World Series, and this is why everything bad is happening to that franchise. But our curse encompasses all of Arizona sports.
Starting point is 00:52:06 It does. It does. And I think that's been made very clear at this point. Two things, Derek. Two things have happened here. We have built every single one of our arenas and stadiums on top of Native American land, right? And second, secondarily, we won perhaps the, the craziest world series of all time.
Starting point is 00:52:28 That's fair. That's fair. But we, in the third year of our franchise be existing. And see, I think that is where we took away, you know, the team that America was rooting for because of extenuating circumstances at the same time. And I don't know if that was like some sort of deal with the devil where we sold ourselves. It was a Faustian deal. It was a Faustian deal. top of the desecration of the Native American burial.
Starting point is 00:52:55 The combination of those two things leads to you will never, ever win again. Right. Right. Beezelbub came up. He was like, you guys know what you did, right? And they were like, well, we did. And then he explained this whole theory that you've explained to us several times. And then he was like, but tell you what, I'll let you bring Randy Johnson out of your bullpen in exchange for your bullpen soul. And they were like, all right, sign me up. Bullpen's don't have souls. And the devil was like, watch, watch me steal your bullpen soul. He goes, he goes, hey, hey, young Kim's been really rough recently.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Is there, maybe you want to see if, like, Randy can go pitch or something? And you're like, yeah, I'd love for, I'd love for Randy to come out of the pen. It's going to cost you one thing. You'll never have a decent bullpen arm ever again. But you'll win this World Series. Just got to sign the dotted line. Worth it. It was worth it.
Starting point is 00:53:52 It was, it is worth it. But also, like, I just wish I got to like experience it. Like you got to experience it. Because me being two years old and running out of my room. Yeah. When my parents were celebrating and being like, woo. But not actually having any idea what happened. That doesn't stick with me as much as like watching the games happen.
Starting point is 00:54:13 But I've seen the championship DVD enough times to to really feel the moment. I mean, I've watched that thing probably more times than I've watched any movie in my entire life. You know that I outkicked my coverage when it comes to my wife. You're aware of that. You've told me that several times, right? So realistically here, I have to thank the World Series from 2001 for perhaps cementing the deal.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Like, I think that we would still- Yeah, we wouldn't still be together as a couple if it wouldn't have been for that victory. The Diamondbacks helped me find my wife and family and eventual future. So I can't thank them enough. Don't do that. That's a little borat. That's for Noah to do. All right.
Starting point is 00:54:52 Leave that to Noah. It's a bore a joke for you. Oh, Michael Dixon's asking you a tough one, Damon. Michael Dixon's asking you a tough one. He wants to know you want a U of A championship or a D-Baks World Series. Well, that's like me asking Derek, do you care more about your daughter or Cosmo? Oh, come on.
Starting point is 00:55:09 That's not fair. You know the answer to that. It doesn't mean it was bad publicly. Yeah, it's easily Cosmo. You're right. You're right. Let's just move on. man that i mean it's it genuinely like i know it's like cliche but it genuinely is like picking
Starting point is 00:55:27 between your favorite your favorite kids yeah here like these these are the two teams that mean everything to me yeah like i wake up in the morning i'm like what happened is kettle on the team still damon wakes up wearing a diamond back shirt with a u of a hat on yeah that's how he wakes up out of bed so i don't know man i think because of how elusive that not only any sort of like championship has been, but also just like tournament success. I'd have to go with you of A. You bastard. Dude, I haven't even seen a final four. Brother. I haven't even seen a final four. You guys get top recruits all the time. You just got a top recruit today. That doesn't equate to winning. Selfish. That doesn't equate to winning. You're on the wrong show for that.
Starting point is 00:56:13 Save that answer for that show. We win in the regular season all the time. Oh, Michael Nixon. Here's the thing. Here's the thing, Derek, is that we get made fun of for being choke artists in the postseason for how Arizona basketball plays in the tournament every March. And you know, you know me in my life and how I am affected by online discourse and how I have to get into Twitter arguments in wars and battles. Those things would go out the window if you of A. Wins and Natty. Because guess what ASU fans are saying to us after we cut down nets when it's all said and done? Nothing. Nothing. Because they got nothing for us. So then what is your life going to be? If you don't have arguing with people on social media, you have nothing.
Starting point is 00:56:55 Maybe I'll, like, go work out or something. Yeah. I'll use my energy. I'll use my energy. Paint some pictures. Things that like are. Learn a foreign language. Artistic or useful or something like that.
Starting point is 00:57:06 Absolutely. I mean, it's so, like, listen, I know that's not an answer anyone on this podcast wants to hear. It's not like it was an easy conclusion I came to. I had to think about it for a second. Yeah, well. Those are literally my two favorite team. it's hard to truly sit down and be like, yeah, I'd pick this one over the other one.
Starting point is 00:57:22 You're dead to all of us except Katie. Katie's the only one that's on board with you. But anyway, we'll get you guys out of here, including I can't look at this guy anymore after that decision. Shut up, Abner. Yeah, yeah. Try to come for your job, buddy. We'll be in touch. Anyway, we thank you guys so much for joining us.
Starting point is 00:57:41 We'll be back tomorrow with another 12 p.m. show. Until then, make sure to join us. Make sure to go watch the Diamondbacks take on the Dodgers. as well but make sure to join us then at 12 p.m. We'll be recapping that game as well as all the world baseball classic action that happens today. Until then you can follow us on social media. I am at cap underscore cape man with a K. That guy is at Damon dog with a D-A-W-G at the end. And we're all Damon's dogs. Bark, bark. Half the chat hates me. Yeah, half the chat hates them. Well, that's nothing new. That's nothing new. That's half the internet.
Starting point is 00:58:10 That is new. Usually these are my biggest supporters is the D-BAC's live chat. Yeah, well. They're all I have. You sold us out. You sold us out. But Our show. No, I am too. I am too, Abner. I shouldn't have said show. I apologize. Our show is at PHNX underscore D-Backs.
Starting point is 00:58:27 AZ-Cats G just slipped in here to support Damon and said, easy answer, Damon, B-TFD. Thank you so much, AZCats. We appreciate you. He watches the show, too. I mean, we, listen, our Wildcats love our D-Backs. We got a lot of wildcats in this chat that show up every single day. Root for Kevin Ginkle. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:58:44 Still mad about Kevin Newman. I just, I'm sorry. A lot of Kevin love. Also, that guy, Kevin in the studio next door. So much Kevin love. I don't know why, but I feel like I did something bad. And I like it's, it just. You expose yourself for your true self.
Starting point is 00:58:57 I didn't expose anything. These are my favorite teams. Anyway, our show, PHNX underscore D-Backs, not wildcats. And our, of course, all roads lead to at PHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Thank you guys so much for your time. We love you guys. We appreciate you stopping by.
