PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - After HEROIC Comeback By Diamondbacks In 9th, Padres Walk Off Closer Paul Sewald

Episode Date: July 6, 2024

In what appeared to be another mediocre effort by the Diamondbacks that resulted in a loss, the offense instead put together one of the most exciting comebacks of the season by scoring six runs in the... top of the 9th to take the lead over the San Diego Padres. Unfortunately, closer Paul Sewald was not sharp again in California, registering his second blown save of the season as the Padres walk-off the D-backs in the bottom of the 9th. We discuss the incredible comeback in the 9th inning and why this loss hurts more than if it would have been a blowout. We are also joined by Jesse Friedman with more from Petco Park. An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports PHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/bet365: Use the code PHNX365 to sign up, deposit $10 and choose between either:Bet and Get offer and place a bet of $5 or more and get $150 in Bonus Bets OR First Bet Safety Net offer by placing a bet up to $1000 and if your qualifying bet loses you receive a matched refund in Bonus betsDisclaimer: Must be 21+ and physically located in AZ.  If you or someone you know has a gambling problem and wants help, call 1-800-NEXT-STEP, text NEXTSTEP to 53342 or visit https://problemgambling.az.gov/Indeed: listeners of this show will get a SEVENTY-FIVE DOLLAR SPONSORED JOB CREDIT to get your jobs more visibility at https://indeed.com/allcity. Starting point is 00:00:13 Why am I so sad, Eric? I think I didn't think I could feel this sad. Well, you're feeling it, bud. You're feeling it. What a night. The Arizona Diamondbacks, after a heroic comeback, after an amazing, incredible top of the ninth inning, the Arizona Diamondbacks get walked off by the San Diego Padres in the bottom of the ninth and lose by a score of 10 to 8th.
Starting point is 00:00:43 but my God, that does not even begin to talk about what a monumental comeback this team put together in the ninth inning and how somehow this loss that you and I fully had accepted up to this point was somehow more devastating, more heartbreaking, at least eight times, at least eight times more heartbreaking than it was previously. Yeah, we have a lease in the chat saying that they would have rather lost seven to two. And it sucks because you're in the moment and Alec Thomas hits a grand slam in the top of the ninth. And you're like, wait a second, like what the heck is going on here, right? And then Gritchick, in for Cattel, two wrong bomb? And you're like, okay, like all my burdens have been lifted from my chest.
Starting point is 00:01:41 you remember that they get a bat too. And you're like, oh, well, let's just, so Polly does his job. And I think roller coaster, the thumbnail is like the perfect encapsulation of what's going on here. Because I think I texted you no fucking way, like in 16 different contexts, 18 different times. And my favorite part about that is every single time you texted me no fucking way, I was in the middle of screaming no fucking way in my living room while watching this game. And that's kind of how that ninth inning went. The Diamondbacks were down seven to two, and that's what Elise is alluding to there.
Starting point is 00:02:20 And I mean, we can honestly even get down to that. Like, what is worse? Getting blown out or having what happened to this team tonight happened tonight. The Diamondbacks score six runs in the top of the ninth to turn a blowout loss into a temporary lead. somehow. I mean, this one, we obviously have to plan this show, not to pull the curtain back too far. But again, this guy over here had written the loss headline and magically things happen. But that really just does happen all the time because we do have to kind of get prepared. We can't just wait until after the game shows. We have a very, very small window to get
Starting point is 00:03:02 this show prepared for you fine folks, which, by the way, I haven't even introduced myself because I'm just so beside myself. Of course, you guys have no idea who I am or this guy next to me. I have Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of P.HNX. This man next to me, Dr. E.R. Eric Ruby here tonight. And again, somehow bringing the magic with him much like he did. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no magic. There's no magic here. An L is no magic. I can't take that, okay? I know, but this one felt magical. I mean, I get it. The Diamondbacks lose 10 to that's the bottom line.
Starting point is 00:03:40 And I'm sure there's going to be some people that are going to rage about this. But honestly, again, much like the conversation we had the other day, this loss, unfortunately, ultimately falls on Paul Sewell's shoulders for not being able to take care of business in the bottom of the ninth in a save opportunity. Now, this came up fast on him as it came as fast as it did on all of us. again, this was a seven to two loss. We didn't even think we were going to see a bottom of the ninth. And the next thing you know,
Starting point is 00:04:13 Seawald has to get himself prepared and ready. And I think that you could tell that that lack of preparation, that lack of time might have been a problem because he was having a really hard time throwing his sweeper there in the bottom of the ninth. But again, the Diamondbacks in the top of the inning, Walker lines out. They're down to their two final outs in the game, down by five runs. we have a Lordus Guriel single or yeah single Gabby Moreno single Lordus by the way another multi-hit game he continues to stay hot
Starting point is 00:04:45 Gabby Moreno seems to very much be back as well they both single Jake McCarthy walks to load the bases and then this guy this guy electricity personified our young king Alec Thomas hits a grand slam home run in and delivers one of the most electric moments of the season for this team. Yeah, and it was followed up by another one of the most electric moments of the season for this team, right? Like that, okay, let's take the loss away, right? Let's just, okay, it happened. It sucked.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Can we talk about a couple of the positives? Like the fact that Alex Thomas came up. That's what we do on this show, Eric. We're not a bunch of over here. We accentuate the positives. We get down on that. Okay. But.
Starting point is 00:05:34 His job is to bring me down, but that's not your job. Your job, much like Damon and John, you've got to pump me up. You got to get me up there. Yes, there's a lot of positives to talk about when it comes to what this team was able to do in the ninth inning. I mean, honestly, Corbyn Carroll, and even that, right? Like, let's talk about that. Alec Thomas has struggled. We haven't really seen him, you know, be able to have that kind of offensive moment.
Starting point is 00:05:57 And it's just huge, huge for him, just as far as his confidence, belief in him. and that's kind of what Alec Thomas does. His batting average isn't going to be great, but he once again has this tendency, this ability to get these big hits and big moments. Yeah, and R.A. in the chat says it's just heartbreaking to see King Alex Grand Slam go to, King Alex Grand Slam go to waste.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And yes, for this game, but that's the type of play that for a hitter that's been struggling mentally, like for him, they didn't lose, the game because of it. They were in it because of him, right? And so there is a way that you can walk away from that.
Starting point is 00:06:39 And you can say, okay, the result wasn't what we wanted, obviously, but we shouldn't have even been in that game in the first place. And we were there because I stepped up to the plate in the top of the night and I put work in and I hit a grand slam. That could be something to a struggling hitter, especially a young one that's returning from injury, that rolls over into the next game. And if it does, then that moment's not for nothing. But right now it's infuriating, especially because it was followed up by Gritchick,
Starting point is 00:07:08 pinch hitting a two-run, home run to take the lead, making that Grand Slam worth even more. I think that moment is probably the bigger moment, right? I think that not only did it give the team the lead, but the events that led up to that, as exciting as Alec Thomas' Grand Slam was, and as much as it meant to this team for those four runs, they were still down by a run. They're still down seven to six.
Starting point is 00:07:37 And they still needed more offense in order to make it happen. We see that we get Corbyn Carroll getting up there and getting a big hit in a big situation. Again, there's another thing. You know, like when you talk about the positives you want to check off here, Lourdes has another multi-hit game. You got Corbyn Carroll coming up in a huge, huge moment and getting a big, I think, what was it, a double? that Corby and Carroll got there.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Yeah, it was a double. And then Tori Lovolo knows something. He has the dirt on somebody. And I don't know, I don't even know if it was Tori, because that's why what makes this my favorite moment of the game is as they're sending Randall Gritchick out there, it causes the broadcast team to kind of spiral out of control a little bit. Instead of sending up there our All-Star short, or second baseman,
Starting point is 00:08:32 Ketel Marte, the all-star, the guy, the man that's delivered more big hits for this team, probably than anybody on the roster, they are sending him back to the dugout for Randall Gritchick. And when the broadcast showed a shot of Tori Lavolo and Jeff Bannister, they were huddled together like two kids that had a secret that they didn't want anybody to see. Like, and whatever that information that they were sharing was resulted in Randall Gritchick hitting a home run to give the Diamondbacks an eight to seven lead. What a moment. Like, what an absolutely insane moment.
Starting point is 00:09:16 And yeah, it got ruined. It got ruined. It did get ruined. It did get ruined. We had that moment, Eric. We had that period of time in our lives where we were. up eight to seven in this game. And though it was fleeting,
Starting point is 00:09:33 it was beautiful while it lasted. Yeah, absolutely. And listen, I'm obviously we're hoping that it was a just a pure tactical move by Tori and it wasn't a, hey, there's something going on with Catelle because the choice was so random that the broadcast
Starting point is 00:09:48 was like, let's put a camera on Catell and see if anything is going on. And you couldn't tell anything his team. Like, nobody was bending to him. He's laughing. He also wasn't having the best night at the plate as well. So maybe Tori was just like, you know, we'll just just do it. Yeah, Tori just does like, Tori just does it. He makes decisions that in the moment, you know, people kind of scratch their heads a little bit. And it goes one of two ways is either goes how it
Starting point is 00:10:15 did tonight, basically the complete opposite, right? Like it's, it's, if he would have grounded out, oh my God, people would want to. The discourse would have been crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Discourse would have crazy if he just grounded out and game over. Yeah. But back to Paul Seawald. Again, that's that's where the darkness creeps in. I mean, on one hand, this was only Paul Seawalt's second blown save of the year and not to make excuses. I know there's some people that love to think my job is to make excuses. There's some people that think I'm part of the broadcast team. So, I mean, people are kind of wrong about a lot of things about me. But I will say that Paul Seawald didn't have a lot of lot of time to prepare and you could tell based on his performance now again i don't know when he got up
Starting point is 00:11:06 in the pen i'm just speculating there purely speculating that he didn't have enough time to prepare but it's the only thing really that i i imagine could have impacted him negatively uh but he was not he didn't look sharp he couldn't land his sweeper in the zone uh he allows a solo home run to jerkson pro far to tie the game and then he walks cronanworth and gives up a home run to manning macho who's the worst person you could give a home run up to you to walk off the game. He really is. Yeah, he had a great night. So there's so many people that I would rather see you give up a game winning home run do than Mani Machado.
Starting point is 00:11:40 But yeah, I mean, on one hand, here we go again. All shit. Here we go again. Right. Here we go again where the Diamondbacks are struggling with having a closer that can go out there. On the other hand, so did the Padres, considering what the Diamondbacks were able to do to the Padres in the top of the inning. shit happens like this. Unfortunately, it's just happened now twice in a row for Paul Seawald in these big series.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And, you know, unfortunately, it's Costa Diamondbacks, you know, two games against their biggest National League West rivals. Yeah. And with Seawald, it's tough because you can look at it and say, oh, you know, you didn't have enough time to prepare. I think that and the chats brought this up too, you are a closer, right? And so I feel like with baseball in a game where anything could happen, I think you at least need to be mentally prepared to go in at the end of the game,
Starting point is 00:12:32 no matter what. And then especially once your offense starts to gain momentum, once I say you got like two guys on base, there's no harm in getting yourself physically and mentally ready and then not going out there. Right. Like that's just like, okay, I was doing my job.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I was ready. And I'm not going to like crucify Paul Seawald because he wasn't doing that. I do think it's something he could have done and he could have been able to handle it better. And maybe there would be a different result if he was. up and ready. However, you know, he wasn't. And I think that that's just kind of like a, you throw your hands up. You're not happy about it. But it's, it's not like, oh my gosh, the end of the world. Right. You know, it's not. And it's also like, let's take a step back here. And baseball is a season of ups and downs for the individual and for the team. And especially for
Starting point is 00:13:18 a closer, it's so mental. Like, there's no reason that this can't kind of snap back in a little bit now it's not guaranteed um but we've seen paul see wall at his best and so i'm holding on to hope and it is hope that when the time comes especially if they're going to make a run at this postseason he's kind of got this part of this season under the rug and back to being nails but you just don't you don't really know at this point and that is a little bit concerning because when you trade for seawald you're like you know what like that's our guy that's our closer we don't have to worry about it And so when you have to start worrying about it again, it's almost like unexpected. Sure.
Starting point is 00:13:54 But again, it's only a second blown save of the year. Right. Yeah. It's not like it's not panic. I really do think that this is one of those situations where like we said, the dime back shouldn't have even been in it. So that that definitely makes it feel like this falls all on Paul Seawald. And it does. I'm not going to like act like it does it. Like he should have been able to go out there and take care of business,
Starting point is 00:14:19 no matter how much time he has, no matter, you know, whatever the case may be. It's just, we just came off of a series where after Paul Seawald blew the first game of the series, blew the save, his first of the year against the Dodgers, that one felt like this was a disaster. The Diamondbacks are going to get swept. And instead, we saw the Diamondbacks go out there and whoop the Dodgers the next two games. And that's something that we shouldn't forget just because of this loss or the pain of how close the Diamondbacks got this loss and how now it falls on Paul Seawald. I think that baseball is one of those games that we are so quick to react to one game. But we honestly just entirely too often react in a way that is not consistent with the fact that it's 162 game season.
Starting point is 00:15:15 All right. And Eric, let me take the screen here for a second. Let me do the thing I do here. You got to relax. And again, this is why the discussion at times with something like this is what hurts worse, right? Losing 7 to 2, losing 9 to 1, or having your team put up a fight, seeing them come back. And then unfortunately, not being able to finish the job off, right? Like here at the end, the Diamondbacks obviously were unable to get the job done. Paul Seawald there, not even able to get an out in the inning. Again, this is frustrating. This is maddening. You got to sometimes, though, look at the positives and look at what the offense was able to do and realize that it does feel just like at times where Jesse and I were, and I'll keep bringing this up. I know I'll keep bringing this up.
Starting point is 00:16:06 But when we were encouraged by Corby and Carroll at Bats, even when he went 0 for 4, this is still a very encouraging performance by this team, much, much better than the way the laydown and diebacks have performed in the past, right? It was at least an effort. It was at least a fight. Alec Thomas, it's very encouraging to see him be such a big part of this. That's why I'm wearing this shirt. I wasn't even wearing this shirt the whole time.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I went and changed into this shirt into the ninth inning and for good goddamn reason, right? I mean, and again, this is one of those nights where you do kind of get frustrated with this team because their record's now 43 and 45. They just can't seem to get to 500 and get over 500 and stay there. They also can't seem to build momentum, right? This is another loss where after an incredible series in Los Angeles, they immediately display all of the weaknesses in this game that we've seen all season long where they score those two runs early, right?
Starting point is 00:17:07 We get a Jock Peterson puts the Diamondbacks up in the first inning with a long two-run, home run to straightaway center in the top of the first, scoring Corbyn Carroll. And I mean, again, that's great. But then zero hits in the second, zero hits in the third, one hit in the fourth, one hit in the fifth, one hit in the six. They couldn't string anything together, just like they can't really seem to string like big wins together. You know, they come off of this huge series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:17:35 You have to feel great. Christian Walker has to feel like a god among men. And then you just kind of go out there and do what you've done also. season long, show some offensive potency early on, and then, you know, just kind of go flat for the majority of the game. And that's a very frustrating thing to see when it comes to this offense, you know? And again, you have, you have Vasquez against the Diamondbacks. Randy Vasquez, this guy, two starts against the Diamondbacks this year, 13 innings pitch, 12 hits, five earned runs, one walk, eight strikeouts, a 3.46 ERA. The man just, I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:13 can't understand why they can't do better against it. But at least Lordus continues to stay hot, like I said earlier. Gino made a throwing error in the fifth there on a on a grounder that Christian able, Chris Walker was able to scoop up. And that's making excuses. I'm the making excuses guy. Well, I can't make excuses for Gino when he's making errors over there at third base. And again, there was, you know, Slade today wasn't great. Slade was, you know, did what Slade still continues to do. It's, it's just, just so weird the changes that he can make during an outing and how he can improve, but also how he can drop off his second time.
Starting point is 00:18:58 I mean, once again, he got bit his second time through the order after looking really good for a portion early on because his velocity was oddly down. I don't know if you saw this, but he was, his first five fastballs were like 80, averaging at 89.7 miles per hour. Brent Strom goes out there and makes a mound visit. And then he's averaging basically 93.6, 94 miles an hour of the rest of the game. And he was great that first time through the order. I mean, it's so weird and unique to see a mound visit that early in a game. It's wild.
Starting point is 00:19:36 And so they'd make like like to see it impact the pitcher. Right. He then started like it wasn't immediately like the next pitch. He just jumped up. But like he kind of slowly started working his way up back to where he was. But it's just it's so hard because you want to look at the positives for Slade and talk about that first time through the rotation. But like there's so many starts into his career where this same problem has occurred. And he obviously is able to correct some things on the fly.
Starting point is 00:20:05 So what is it about? his pitching specifically. Is it a him thing? Is it another team thing where they figure him out? And that's the thing. And that's the problem, right? There's not one thing you can point it and be like, that's the reason why Slate Soconi struggles the next time through the order.
Starting point is 00:20:18 And that's why it's concerning, right? And so you're just worried about having to tread water this season while your starters are still injured. And you have somebody who can only pitch through one time through the order. And depending on the inning, you can get almost all the way through that in one inning if it's not going great like that's just not good and chat here is talking about slade and not really being a starter and being one of the main reasons why they did lose i mean that that momentum shifted and then after that you know divax were scoring any runs until the top of the night and that's
Starting point is 00:20:53 great but also you need run support throughout the game too to win the game as much as i want to give Tory credit for the Randall Gritchick pinch hit. I was as mad there as Kelland do was about, you know, the Tory going out there. And he says, Tori waits till the damage has already done to pull Slade. And it felt like that, right? It felt, and the broadcast addressed it. I was listening on the radio at one point because I was driving. And I heard them talk about, you know, basically getting to Humberto Castiano so that this team just wouldn't have to spend the bullpen. at one point. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:30 And, you know, basically it was kind of like a white flag, waving the white flag situation based on the guys he put out there. Of course, the bullpen. At least Umberto was good. I mean, two innings pitch, he gave up one hit. No runs allowed. Didn't walk anyone, didn't strike anyone out. I think, you know, it was great that he ate up some innings.
Starting point is 00:21:50 It was great that Diamondbacks were able to come back. And you could talk about a lot of things. I mean, Slade definitely doesn't, it just doesn't make any sense. And I think that there's still adjustment. obviously that he can make that can improve things, but his first time through the order, he allows, I think, what was it, one run total on two hits? And then, you know, you got his second time through the order
Starting point is 00:22:11 that absolutely just goes to dog shit. And this is something now that we've seen entirely too many times. He allowed four runs on five hits the second time through the order. All four runs came in the fourth inning. He threw 37 pitches in the fourth inning. And Lavello just left him in there. to face three batters, you know, of the fifth. And I, like, that's the part where it gets frustrating where you see,
Starting point is 00:22:37 yes, I understand that this team, you know, has, or Tori as a manager, has a bullpen to manage. And by bullpen of management, I mean he has to, you know, worry about constantly using these guys on nights where a starting pitcher can't go more than three innings, four innings. and absolutely taxed taxing this bullpen and having them not be available at their best when he needs them. Yeah. This is just one of those nights, though, where I was screaming a little bit at the TV and I was a little bit frustrated at leaving Slade out there.
Starting point is 00:23:14 We have seen this too often, so it shouldn't be a surprise that Slade is not good the, you know, second time through the rotation. unfortunately it's just a matter of options. I think it's also a matter of trying to let him like mature and work this out. Yeah, I think I was going to ask you that. Right. Like at what point through Tori's mind when he sees this pattern enough does he think, well, you're never going to fix it if you don't get the chance, right? And I could totally see that line of thinking.
Starting point is 00:23:47 And I can see how right now on July 5th, that's really frustrating. but if for some reason, and again, like we're talking best case scenario here, and I get it. Some people just want to be angry and some people just want to vent. I completely understand. But best case scenario, the more opportunities you get for him to try and fix this, the more likely he is to do it, right? I don't think there's any way he fixes it by not pitching through. But it's kind of like a chicken in the egg where how many times do you let him go through
Starting point is 00:24:14 this and let his confidence get zapped? And pitching is quite the game of confidence, right? So you let you let him go through the second rotation, the third time through, you know, and he struggles again. At what point does that actually harm his mental rather than help him try to figure it out? Yeah. Well, and Elise, of course, is delivering some great points as she does because she's a liar and a known baseball GM. But she says, this is not the series to get the chance to figure it out. and I think that's what the case is.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I also spend a lot of time watching baseball. And I think the thing I understand about people's frustrations with Tori is my point of view, where I'm like, I see other managers make this call, right? Where they, you know, again, they don't want to let a game slip away. So instead of, even if they're down, they still make pitching changes to try to, you know, kind of save, keep the game as close as possible. give their team a chance to come back and win it. It feels like the two and 39 record is in Tori's head.
Starting point is 00:25:29 And once the team gets down by a certain deficit, he's automatically kind of riding it off. Well, those days were because what we saw tonight was a magnificent comeback by a team that had all the fight in them when they absolutely had no reason to have fight in them. and again, they brought as much as Maria said there, that the division, you know, rivals thing, they bring their best. The Diamondbacks brought their best. They did not want to let, they did not want to roll over and die in this one.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Yeah. I applaud, I applaud the offense for going out there and doing what they did. That was incredible. Hopefully what we see, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the case, but hopefully we see that, you know, cause them to get on a roll and have some momentum. It just feels like there is no momentum for this team at times this year. It feels like they just can't get on that role, both offensively, individually as players, or as a team when it comes to performing well and getting some important wins.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Yeah, and, you know, two out of the last three games, they've been down. And obviously different points of the game, that Dodgers game a couple of days ago, the last post game that we did, where Christian Walker obviously went in and just owned Dodger Stadium again. but they were down early and Mena locked in and the offense came back and they came back firing. Obviously, then the next game they get off to an early lead. But then this game, you know, you're off to an early lead and then you get down. You're down the whole game and you go into the ninth and your backs against the wall and the offense puts up just an incredible performance.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And I get that, you know, two and 39 might be in Tori's head. But you've got to block that stuff out, man, especially when you have a team who's entire identity last year was don't count us out until, you know, it's the end of the game. There's a certain thing where the team takes on like a manager's energy. And I'm not saying that that's exactly what happened. Yeah, two and 40 now. Amazing. Oh, that's tough.
Starting point is 00:27:30 That's tough. And two and 40, nice round number. But you have to be competent in that situation as a manager and confident in your team, especially one that's struggling like this, who last year was not. you know, a lot of this stuff is mental, right? And you can't do everything, but you can't let it seem like, hey, we're just going to let Slade go another round through because screw it. You know, we're already, like, no, you know, like, especially like the chat's pointing out and you guys are making great points. Like, this is a team in the wildcard race.
Starting point is 00:28:05 This is a team in your division. This is a team that you need to beat. And when you don't, it's almost like losing twice. And so you can't afford to give that type of stuff up. But chat, you're making great points. Thank you all for being here. Please hit that like button.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Get the bad energy out of here. Yeah. Yeah. Please. Let's do that. Also. Every time you like the video, man. It's one less game blown.

Terms and conditions apply. Need to hire. You need indeed. Well, of course, we also need some numbers and we also need to first announce who our Kingsnake is. This one was difficult. Again, a roller coaster ride, but I think you guys get what we're going with here because despite the loss, we still have to give it to these two smiling, gorgeous boys for what they did for this team tonight, Alec Thomas and Randall Gritchick, and you know exactly why we're giving them the king snake. I don't have to explain myself to you. You understand it. You know what's going
Starting point is 00:33:16 on here. I get it. I understand what's going on. I mean, listen, it would have been a lot sweeter of a king snake if it led to a win, but I think we should still take again. And we have take a step back and appreciate just how crazy that ninth inning was. Alec Thomas in a big spot. Great. and slam having flashbacks, you know, to the postseason last year. And then Gritchick just stepping in and just an incredibly pressure-filled situation, not just with the game, but also with the fans, right? Manager puts trust in you to replace the All-Star starter with the game on the line and you bury one?
Starting point is 00:33:55 Yeah. Yeah. Very well-deserved Kingsnakes. Yeah, absolutely. And I mean, again, I don't know what information Tori had about Randall Gritchick. know if it's a matchup situation. I don't know if he had some sort of, you know, uh,
Starting point is 00:34:13 like prior history, you know, uh, with, I think it was Dela Santos out there. But this is, this was just an incredible victory for this. Or,
Starting point is 00:34:21 incredible comeback. It's temporary, uh, a lead that they had. And I think it, again, incredible victory was what they did this weekend against, uh,
Starting point is 00:34:34 or, or weekend. This is a, weird week for me. But over the last two days prior to today against the Dodgers, that was amazing. And again, something that you really feel like they could build on felt like could have been a pivotal moment in this season. You know, but then we have today's loss. And I mean, taking the comeback out of it, things didn't look great, right? It looked like another mediocre performance from this team. Instead, they refused to die. They came back big. and unfortunately Paul Seawald just could not get out there and get the job done against,
Starting point is 00:35:08 honestly, a very good Padres team that has been red a hot. Pro Far has been red hot. Mani Machado had, what, four hits in this game? So, like, that's, the man was already beating the Diamondbacks up all night long. And, of course, it was him that ended the game at the end of the night. As heartbreaking as it was, it seemed appropriate. It was Mani Machado with the night that he's had so far. But man, I mean, this one, again, let's take a look at the numbers of this one because it did.
Starting point is 00:35:36 It went from a blowout loss that pretty much would have just been one most. Maybe most of you would not even be here watching this show because you probably would have stopped watching the game. And instead really did provide one of the most exciting moments, albeit brief of the season. Diamondbacks lose this one 10 to 8. The Padres out hit the Diamondbacks 14 to 12. Runners in scoring position. Padres were four for 10. Diamondbacks were three for six.
Starting point is 00:36:02 So a lot of those came, you know, there in the ninth inning. Extra base hits, Padres had six, diamondbacks had five. And the Diamondbacks actually had the harder hit percentage at 46.7% compared to the Diamondbacks, 34.3%. But, of course, I'm very excited to talk about these numbers and so much more with my vice mayor, your thunder stick, the man on the road, the man coming to us live from Petco Park in San Diego, with an absolutely exquisite view. Your view might only be the second most beautiful thing of the night
Starting point is 00:36:37 compared to that Randall Gritchick pinch hit home run or maybe third to the Alec Thomas Grand Slam. But Jesse, man, what a what a roller coaster ride this game was. It was the best way we could describe it. Yeah, I mean, what a while. Jesse, speechless, folks. I'm pretty much speechless after watching this game, yes. I mean, there were nine runs scored in the ninth inning of this baseball game. The Diamondback scored six in the top of the ninth to turn a seven-two deficit into an eight-seven lead.
Starting point is 00:37:12 And then, of course, Paul Seawall just had a brutal outing in the bottom of the ninth. It was pretty clear stuff just wasn't really there. He didn't have great feel for the sweeper. The command was clearly off pretty much, not on every pitch necessarily, but on almost every pitch it felt like. So this is a brutal loss there. I mean, the Diamondbacks very, it's not all that hard to talk yourself into 4 and O so far to start the week against, you know, some really key division opponents with the way that the Tuesday game went where, you know, Seawald had a one run lead in that game and wound up blowing that save all with two outs. And then this one, I don't know if this one fell better or worse for people. You know, it wasn't he wasn't one strike away tonight, Derek.
Starting point is 00:37:54 He wasn't able to get an out. It was obviously a homer, a walk. and then another homer. Mani Machado has been on an absolute tear lately. I believe I saw he has an 11.05 OPS in his last 15 games. So, you know, maybe people take some sort of comfort in the fact that Mani Machado has just been on another level recently. And this is far from, you know, just like a seawalled thing,
Starting point is 00:38:18 but Chado has been one of the best hitters in this league for a long time. And he seems to have gotten back to that, at least over these last few weeks. So, and Jorickson ProFar, who at the other home. run has had an outstanding season. He's going to be an all-star starter for a reason. So, you know, the debacks got beat by some really good, some really good hitters. They came back in, in such an incredible, incredible way. Like, I don't want to take everything away from what they did in the top half of the
Starting point is 00:38:44 ninth inning just because they ultimately lost this game. It was a remarkable comeback. But unfortunately, Seawald wasn't quite able to finish the job. And again, as reactionary as people are being, and understandably so because of, like you said, the Diamondbacks very much should be, you know, 4-0 right now after playing three against the Dodgers and one against the Padres. And unfortunately, their closer is the reason why they're not.
Starting point is 00:39:14 And I think that, of course, part of it is that Seawald, these are the only blown saves Seawald has given up all season long. He is kind of regressing a bit to the means because of how good he actually was. prior to these two blows saves, right? And I mean, we're talking about a guy right now that even after these disastrous five runs allowed in two thirds of an innings pitched, he saws a 3.12 ERA. And yes, he had a sub one ERA at one point, right? But, I mean, again, yeah, he hasn't, you know, the sample size obviously isn't very large considering the time he missed. Can we do numbers don't lie right now?
Starting point is 00:39:55 Am I allowed to do that? Jesse you're allowed to do whatever you want around here you're the actual boss and of course I would lie if I was trying to claim that I was so of course we know I lie we know that Jesse definitely lies but the numbers they never lied Jesse what do you got for us yeah well I just had to get this in now because you just spoiled it it's 3.12 uh it is uh sometimes we spend a little too much time together Derek we wind up on sort of the the same wavelength gross I hate it I I hate it so much. I don't want to go on the road with you.
Starting point is 00:40:29 Well, you're going to have to get over that, Derek. You're going to be on the road together for entirely too long here in about a week. But, yeah, Seawald has a 3.12 ERA and looking at his ERA last year, which I'm looking up here real quick, Seawald last season for the Diamondbacks had a 357 ERA. And his ERA for the season as a whole, including his time with the Mariners, Derek, was 3.12. He now has exactly the same ERA that he has. had a year ago. And beyond that, even with the blown save that he had today, CWald is still 12 for 14, if I'm getting that right. Sorry, I think it's 11 for 13. 11 for 13 in save opportunities this
Starting point is 00:41:08 season, which is a conversion rate of about 85%. And that is really, really good. That is also pretty much right in line with what CWald has done, you know, with the Mariners and then with D-backs over the past few seasons. So, you know, this is such a gut punch of a game to lose. as the lights are like flickering behind me that's interesting now now we have like a cooler yeah now it just got even more no it just got even more dramatic green screen that's not real behind you the whoever said it in the comments that is AI generated there's no way that's real Jesse but yes all this to say Seawald see walled see what wasn't going to have a one ERA for the entire season right that that just wasn't going to be realistic and despite what's happened this week
Starting point is 00:41:54 he has still had overall a pretty good season for the Diamondbacks. We talked about before the game on Tuesday, like the D-backs hadn't really lost a game because of Seawall the entire season. And that's just not something that any closer can really sustain. The other closer, Derek, didn't have a great day either, right? That's what I said. Came in with some really good numbers too. And the Debacks at a grand slam and then a two-run Homer against him.
Starting point is 00:42:19 So, you know, just one of those, one of those days in baseball where even really, good players do have off nights from time to time. And it's funny because, again, Christian Walker had that nonchalant attitude about it after his ridiculous performance in Los Angeles. And I mean, I do think part of it is humility, as I talked about. His humility is so sexy, Jesse. But at the same time, holy shit, he's right. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:42:47 And you don't really know how to explain it. And you're not really like, no, I don't see the ball better here. I don't, you know, the air isn't different. Like, it's not like there's some magical answer as to why I come here and crush the baseball. I just do. I don't know. I go to Universal Studios. I ride the, the back lot tour.
Starting point is 00:43:09 I get super amped about seeing King Kong. And then I come over here and I destroy the Dodgers. Like, that's the kind of answer I really wanted to hear out of it. But that baseball is just weird. And tonight's one of those weird nights. We're both closers for both teams that have actually both been very good this. season faltered and gave up a whole lot of runs combined between the two of them. Unfortunately, the Padres already had such a substantial lead that it wasn't like the
Starting point is 00:43:32 Diamondbacks were able to be up by four runs there in the bottom of the ninth. They only had the one run lead, which evaporated quite quickly when it came to this game. But speaking of evaporating, everything's evaporated. It's so hot here. That's why Jesse got out of town. He makes you believe that he left so that he could go cover baseball games. but he just knew it was going to be 115, 118 degrees, whatever the hell it is here today.
Starting point is 00:43:58 So he got out of town. But, of course, if you are feeling evaporated, dehydrated, make sure to stop by Circle K. Not only can you get yourself filled up. Starting point is 00:44:46 And again, speaking of the heat, speaking of Jesse being in California, by the way, I hope you took your shatry. with you. It feels so good outside, Derek. I hate you. Shut up. I don't even want to though. I wasn't bringing you in to join me on this part. I don't want to hear about how great the weather is out there. I just want it to be sunny and hot and burning your eyes like it burning my eyes here in Arizona. Jesse, I went for a run today and I think my eyes were sweating. And when I say that, I don't mean my eyelids or my forehead. I think my eyeballs were sweating. And I don't think I was crying. I think I was literally just sweating out of my eyes because of how hot it is. And as I've told you, the sun is trying to kill you if you live here in Arizona. So
Starting point is 00:45:27 combat the sun with a pair of Shady Ray sunglasses. They are the best in the business. They are a quality premium pair of sunglasses with crystal clear optics. And they are honestly much cheaper than quality sunglasses that are on the same level as theirs. Plus those other more expensive brands do not have the level of ridiculous replacement warranty plan that Shady Ray's offers. They told us that they will allow you to replace your shady rays if you break them or lose them. Even on day one, no questions asked. So, of course, I love my shady rays. I pick them over every other single pair of sunglasses.
Starting point is 00:46:02 I own no matter how cool those other glasses might match my outfit or make me look. That's the shady rays. I put them on. They don't even feel right. The weight is right. The optics is right. They're polarized sunglasses. They're amazing.
Starting point is 00:46:15 So they have lots of brands, lots of, lots of styles for you to choose from. and exclusively for our listeners, Shady Raise is giving out their best deal of the season. Head to ShadyRace.com and use Coat's PHNX for 35% off polarized sunglasses. Try for yourself the Shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people. The big question on everybody's mind, Jesse, and we haven't really talked about it because I wanted you here for it is what happened with that Randall Gritchick pinch hit situation? Obviously, people were ready to scream because Tori pinch hits for Catelle Marte, arguably the best player on this team. He was over four tonight. And of course, it did look like in some, in a moment in the dugout in the broadcast that him and Jeff Bannister appeared to be sharing some secrets that they didn't want other people to talk about.
Starting point is 00:47:07 The broadcast seemed confused. They showed Catell. He seemed in good spirits. he was laughing, he was joking, it didn't look like he was really upset about not being in the game, nor did he look like he was really injured. So can you fill us in and tell us what's going on with Marte? Yeah, just a matchup thing, Derek, you know, for as good as Katel has been this season, like he's not that good of a player.
Starting point is 00:47:31 And Randall Gritchick, you know, this is what he's here for, to pinch it for Ketel Marte late in games. Like, that's his role on this team. No, none of that is true. Oh, no. Catelle Marte was pitching for because he was hurt. There was no way to. Oh, no. I was ever going to.
Starting point is 00:47:51 I'm amazed it took you that long to catch on to the bit. I must not pull the offer. I figured that's where you were going with it, but I just kind of was hoping that this other stuff was a lot. I thought you were pulling my leg, but right in the right way. What happened to him? What's going on with Cotell? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:06 So I'll let, I'll let Tori Lavella do the talking. Here's Tori talking about Cotell's injury after the game. Yeah, Catelle just had some low back tightness when he came in off the field in the ninth inning. And, you know, the timing of this game is unbelievable, right? I started maneuver on it and, you know, in the middle of a very crucial out bat when I took out. I think it was Suarez and we had no infielers left. I was getting word that Cattel could not go back on the field. So we were scrambling if we tied the game, what we were going to do?
Starting point is 00:48:36 And, you know, we had enough pieces and enough parts. Well, I mean, at least it's just lower back. tightness, but I mean, again, it's never a good thing to hear that another diamondback is experiencing any kind of injury. Right. Yeah, so it's lower back tightness. Lavello was later asked if he'll need any imaging, if Cotel will need any imaging. And Lavello said no as if right now, the answer is no. So yeah, Contell is just day to day with lower back tightness. Tori did say that it is something that's lingered for a little while. I think it was something that that Catelle tweaked a couple of days ago during the Dodgers series.
Starting point is 00:49:17 So it doesn't sound like this was a totally unexpected thing. Tori kind of knew that this was a possibility at some point that he would have to take Catell out. And so he, you know, he wound up having to pull the trigger on that in a very, very crucial moment of this game. You know, literally the time run on second base with two outs in the ninth inning. That is never an ideal spot to be pulling your best player. But that's what Tori had to do. And boy, did it work out, Derek. You know, Randi-Higgick, in a righty-on-righty matchup, comes up against one of the better back-end relievers in the game.
Starting point is 00:49:51 It's a two-run home run to give the D-backs the lead. Pretty incredible moment there despite how the game ended. Well, Jesse, I think the big thing here is that Diamondbacks aren't the only people getting injured. Injuries are happening all across Major League Baseball, and they happen all the time in baseball. when Cattel was kind of making that, I guess, acceptance speech, if you want to call it that, about being nominated as the starting second baseman for the All-Star team. He brought up how he's been hurt a lot. And a lot of these guys, like, we hear about these injuries,
Starting point is 00:50:28 we hear about a hamstring thing or whatever, and we're just like, oh, it's gone away, right? Like, yeah, he's back. It's fine. and it's not ever really 100% fine again sometimes with some of these injuries. And a lot of times these players are just playing through. I think that sometimes we don't quite understand the impact that they're truly having on them. And maybe the players don't. Maybe the players don't really think, maybe they think that if they can just kind of get through,
Starting point is 00:50:57 you know, take some pain meds or whatever and then they're fine. Like it is what it is. But again, I think like, you know, we've seen. we saw Zach Gallen go down with an injury and Zach Gallen didn't really seem right prior to that injury. It didn't seem like that was the only day he was struggling with it. Yet after some time off, Zach Gallen comes back and he looks better than he has all season long now that he's had some time to rest up and heal a little bit. These guys, you know, they put their bodies out there every single day and it's a very long season. Like there comes a point where, you know,
Starting point is 00:51:31 again, I think, you know, these injuries catch up and we don't even, we don't even, we don't know about all the injuries these guys have on a day-to-day basis. Kattel, it's worth mentioning. This was not the first time that Ketel has actually been, has actually not played because of a back tightness issue. He was scratched with lower back tightness. I believe was the diagnosis at the time. I want to say that was about a month ago now that that happened.
Starting point is 00:51:57 So it wasn't a big deal. Kattel was back in there, I believe, the next day. So people might have, might have forgotten about that. but there is a little bit of history here with this injury for sure. So Tori didn't sound too concerned about it. We'll see where it goes from here. But, you know, even a couple of days without Coutel Marte in the lineup can obviously make a big difference for the D-backs. He's such a huge part of everything they're doing offensively right now.
Starting point is 00:52:22 Getting to some of the other videos here, Derek, I want to play Tori Lavello, just talking about some of the highs and lows of this game. This game's great, isn't it? And you go from low to as high as you can possibly imagine and then as low as you can feel in the day and the night. But that's the beauty of this game. And it'll do that to you. And we're all kind of used to it. I think in some ways addicted to it.
Starting point is 00:52:49 But I was proud of our team today. I was proud of the way we came back from 7 to 2 deficit. And we had a chance to win this baseball game. And we have nothing to hang our heads for. We fought as hard as we could fight. fight and and we'll continue. I love when he says addicted to it because aren't we all, aren't we all? Look at this guy out in San Diego.
Starting point is 00:53:12 Yeah, I mean, the highs and the lows of this game or something. It wasn't even, I guess, you know, you have your high of being up because the Diamondbacks once again put up runs in the first inning and they do what they've done all season long. They show off that potent offense early and then go as cold as you can imagine for the next four to eight innings, depending on what game you're talking about. This team just, you know, has a problem at times stringing together offense. And even beyond that, Jesse, they seem to have a problem stringing together like wins, like getting hot and going on a roll, especially after those two big wins in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:53:49 You felt like maybe they kind of turned a corner here. And instead they came out and played rather mediocre baseball for most of this game. And like, it's, it was disappointing, but I think fans were much like, you know, you and probably Eric and myself where we were already discussing this being a loss and kind of chalking it up to that, especially with the deficit being not only more than two runs, which they are now two and 40 in games where they are down by two runs or more, but being five runs, right? It felt very much like this, you know, was a kind of lay down and diebacks kind of game. And instead, you know, the answer back showed up out of nowhere, a little bit dusty, a little bit, you know, little cobwebs on them, but they still showed up. And I mean, it was an exciting night. And I think it really is something to build on. Just like as much as it sounded like loser talk, I thought that the way they played Los Angeles in game one, even though they lost due to Paul Seawald, was encouraging and was something that you could build on.
Starting point is 00:54:48 Even if they went on to lose the series, it still felt like, man, they put up a hell of a fight against, you know, a divisional opponent that they. they, you know, for some reason, can step up against. And then we saw them just whoop the Dodgers. So maybe this series will go that same way for the Diamondbacks against the Padres. Hopefully so. But tonight's game felt so much more heartbreaking due to the fact that they accomplished what they accomplished. And that part sucks because we like, we just, we accepted the loss and that we thought
Starting point is 00:55:18 we were going to win. And then we got our hearts broken and that whiplash effect, I think maybe. makes this hurt even more. That's that's the beauty of this game, Derek. That's what, that's what Tori would say. And that's what Tori did say after this game was over. I do I do want to point out that, you know, you're right. The debacks obviously were able to mount an incredible comeback.
Starting point is 00:55:40 And they really have shown signs this week of getting back to being the answer backs, getting back to a team that really is never out of a game, no matter what the score is. However, to your point earlier, debacks did not do much against Randy Vasquez after that first inning. fact, they did basically nothing. It was three hits, all of them, singles, one walk, you know, and innings two through, I believe he got the first out of the seventh inning.
Starting point is 00:56:05 And Vasquez, Derek, has made 17 career starts. And only two of those starts as he recorded an out in the seventh inning or later. And both of those came against the diamond backs. Vasquez had a pretty similar outing against the debacks earlier this season, where he gave up three runs in six and two-thirds innings. And all three of those runs were scored in the first. first two. The debacks, just for whatever reason against Vasquez, they allow them to settle in and, you know, finish, finish with some pretty good numbers despite how those two outings
Starting point is 00:56:37 began. So I think that's, that's, you know, the game is not all on Paul Cwalls, right? It's not all on Slate Cicone either. The offense for as much as it did late, and it, you know, it's hard to ask for more than eight runs in some ways for sure. But that is something you'd like to see the debacks get away from a little bit, you know, these games where they, where they jump on starters early and then just kind of coast from that point forward. To be fair, like, I mean, they really took it to all three Dodgers pitchers that they faced earlier this week. So I think they already have made some strides in that regard. But tonight definitely reminded me more of what we what we saw earlier in the year. Well, someone else that has been making strides as a pinch hitter is Randall Gritchick.
Starting point is 00:57:22 And I think that his ability to come off the bench and do what he does for this team at times is very difficult. And I mean, again, like, it feels like he deserves more playing time with what he delivers to this team. It's hard to argue with that. I mean, Grishik, this, this Homer tonight, Derek did not come against the lefty. This came against one of the best righties in the game. And Grishik was able to come through. I asked him after the game about kind of how much. how much lead time he had, whether he was able to hit in the cage at all
Starting point is 00:57:56 or kind of what his preparation was like for that at bat. And we can go ahead and roll that one. Eric, this is, Randall Gritchick, Eric. Yeah. Yeah, there was a couple times possibly getting in there. So I was down in the cage just getting loose. And then, I mean, once the night start, I kind of went back up to the dugout. And then they let me know that Marty wouldn't be able to hit.
Starting point is 00:58:24 Imagine you weren't expecting baseball. for that's particular until pretty late. Definitely not. I mean, I was seeing my role here. I don't expect to face a writing in the ninth ever, starting or not. So it was a bit of a shock. But understanding the situation, you know, just had to go in there and hope the best foot forward. And boy did he.
Starting point is 00:58:46 Boy, did he. And, like, it's hard because baseball can be a game of individual accomplishments and individual failures. And it's, you're also a team. So as exciting as that moment is, it's got to like, it's got to feel like just deflating, you know, so much to have delivered for your team to have brought that moment and then to lose in the next inning, right? And I mean, again, it is what it is. Baseball players, like Tori said earlier, they're used to this thing.
Starting point is 00:59:21 This isn't anything new to them. They've been doing this their entire careers. but it's still like what a moment for Alec and what a moment for Randall to only, you know, have it end the way it did. I mean, the emotional highs and lows of this game, I don't know if they've ever been as extreme as this in any game that I've covered at least. Like for the Diamondbacks to come back and score six runs in the top of the ninth when they're down by five with a grand slam and a pinch hit two run homer right on right, you know, coming in Grishie. coming in for the Diamondbacks, the best player who had just gotten hurt
Starting point is 00:59:58 and could tell Marte. I mean, it would have been an unbelievable story for the Diamondbacks to come through and win this game in that fashion. And then on the flip side, I mean, just the, you know, what happened with Paul Seawald in the ninth inning, you know,
Starting point is 01:00:11 there are blown saves. And then there are blown saves like this, where a closer comes in and gives up Homer, walk, Homer. I mean, it didn't, I mean, he threw a decent number of pitches, but, you know,
Starting point is 01:00:21 it wasn't like Seawald was, was getting close to closing. game. I mean, he just really pretty clearly didn't have it. So the combination of the diamondbacks, you know, reaching that high at the top of the ninth and then reaching one of the lowest points that a team can really reach when, you know, inevitably closers have games like this. It's, yeah, it's hard to really put all that in perspective. And speaking of perspective, Alec Thomas, I thought had some great perspective on the highs and lows, the emotions of this game. Here's what Thomas had to say about that. That's kind of like life, man. You know, he's,
Starting point is 01:00:55 you start off, you know, kind of tough. Like, you know, you're grinding through the game and, you know, the last, last bit of hope in the game and, you know, things turn. And, you know, you just got to keep on going. And, you know, that's baseball and that's life too. So definitely resonates with me a little bit. Like, throughout the game, I was like, man, I don't really tired or something.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Like, I don't know why I'm not in, like, my, my, feelings and my emotions are are not there for some reason. And then I had a liner to the center fielder. I'm like, all right. I mean, there's a little spark. And then, you know, we got the bases loaded. Great at bat by Jake. And then, you know, that definitely hibed me up a little bit. But not as much as it hyped me up to see Randall, you know, hit the two run home. And so that was, that was the highlight of, you know, that inning right there. So that's pretty sweet. I want to say something, Jesse, just because I have come off very frustrated at times with individuals in this chat and on Twitter over the absolute like meltdowns people have.
Starting point is 01:02:14 You know a lot of people in apology, Derek. Is that what we're about to get? Absolutely not. You know I don't apologize, Jesse. You also know I don't lie. But what I do say is this, baseball is a form of entertainment. And at the end of the year, only one baseball team wins a World Series. And if your entire enjoyment of the sport of baseball hangs on your team winning the World Series, then stop watching baseball because there's a good chance you're going to spend so much of your time miserable. Go find something else to enjoy. Protect yourself and protect your own mental health better than that.
Starting point is 01:02:51 because baseball is about watching games like this and taking away the absolute joy that we all experienced watching this team come back in the top of the night. We lost Elise, Jesse. Elise says this is the most depressing loss of the season. And in my opinion, that is totally not the case. I understand how it can be deflating and infuriating and frustrating, especially considering that this one just kind of hangs on Paul Seawald at the end of the day. We could talk about Slade. We could talk about the bullpen. And we could talk about all sorts of things.
Starting point is 01:03:22 But at the end of the day, the downback's had a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning and should have won this game for all intents and purposes, right? They had no business being in it, but they should have won it. But still, there is the joys of life and the joys of watching baseball. And this team, like, again, what, three teams in the last 50 years in the National League have repeated going back to the World Series. The odds are stacked against this team to do what they did last year. are stacked against this team to even reappear in in the playoffs with the way things are going right now, right?
Starting point is 01:03:58 The odds were stacked against this team when they lost three-fiths of their starting rotation. It's just the comeback nature and the way that this team really, even with all of this adversity, still doesn't, you know, really give up and still presses on. Like Alec Thomas said there, that's the beauty of life and it's the beauty of watching this game, right? I mean, it's really just not necessarily always about your enjoyment of a sport being about your team winning a championship, right? Sometimes it's about this community, this community we've built here with the Diamondbacks and all of these wonderful people we've met because of this team. Like sometimes it's about that stuff. But like also sometimes it's about just, wow, what the hell did we see there in the top of the ninth night? Like holy shit, yes, the Padres came back and won and probably should have with the.
Starting point is 01:04:50 the way this game went the rest of the game. However, like, what an incredible moment we all got to witness. There's a pretty crazy fact slash stat that producer Eric just uncovered. Can we throw that on the screen? Because it's one of the wildest things I've ever seen. This is from Optus stats on Twitter for those of you joining us on audio. The ninth inning of tonight's DeBAC's Padres game featured a grand slam by Alec Thomas, a go-ahead Homer, Randall Gritchick, a game-tying homer,
Starting point is 01:05:19 jerks and pro far and a walkoff homer by manny machado that is according to optistats the first time in melb history that four different players accomplish those four feats in the same inning of the same game that is absolutely wild but also i do want to say corbin barrel says alex saying he was more pumped for with the gritchick homer than his grand slam what a dude Dude, what a guy. The boys are bad, Jesse. I mean, the Gritchie Comer is the one that gave them the lead to be. But he's, he hit on Jesse, Jesse, but he hit the other one.
Starting point is 01:06:00 He hit the other one. That's, and on the first pitch, my God, did he smash that ball? Oh, man. I just, oh, I look, I, I know. I still, I still don't know how I feel about this loss. I don't know if I would have been, because I was bummed out. I was bummed out. Jesse. I was at dinner. I was bummed out. I was watching the game on a very small television,
Starting point is 01:06:25 a.k.a. my phone. Then I was listening to it on the radio. I was ignoring members or like friends so I could watch this game. And like I was thinking for what? Look at the way they're down. What? I'm ignoring all these people I know in real life so that I could watch this team lose. And then they gave me just the ultimate high like Tori said there. The highs, the lows, like everything, man. It's, uh, I get it though. I know. There's a lot of people. that are just absolutely furious about what they saw tonight. And you probably should be because this should have been one of those like all-time games. Jesse and I have been asked about like what we think like are like the best games we've
Starting point is 01:07:04 ever seen have been. And I mean, this could have been one of them. It would have had a case. It would have had a case. Yeah. I mean, especially Jesse if like let's say the Machado home run doesn't happen and we just go into extras and then these two battle it out. Maybe we get to see him go into 11 or 12. Like that could have made this just even that much more epic of a battle. But instead, Paul Seawald unfortunately blows a second very important game over the last, what, five days and four days. And really, really makes it you start to overreact.
Starting point is 01:07:40 It makes you start to ask questions. Like, how many more do we see out of Paul Seawald if this is the case before Tori turns to Brian Thompson or Kevin Ginkle? or Justin Martinez, which I'm sure that's not going to be the case, but I'm just saying like the other options that Tori has of guys that are able to kind of come in and take care of business lately feels like maybe Paul Seawald would be on a short leash,
Starting point is 01:08:03 but I don't think that's ever going to be the case. Ever, as long as he's healthy, he's out there and he's the closer. It'd be one thing if he came into this week with an ERA of five and, you know, three or four bone saves already, but he came into this week with an ERA of basically one, and a perfect 11 for 11 and save opportunities. Like I said from the top, like in Seawald's season as a whole, it's still good.
Starting point is 01:08:27 I mean, it's still pretty much exactly what you'd expect from one of the better closers in baseball. And Alec Thomas talked about Seawald and kind of having his back after this one. Here is what Alec Thomas had to say. Yeah, we all have those days and, you know, unfortunately happened today. But, you know, I have faith in Seawald
Starting point is 01:08:47 that he's going to bounce back and, you know, get us some saves here soon. So, you know, he's an awesome guy, an awesome teammate, and he wants the best for everyone, and we want the best for him. So, you know, we're going to have his back and no matter what. Got to love that, man. And, I mean, again, it's showing that support to your teammates, like Jordan Montgomery talked about with Geraldo Perdomo showing him that support. It's important.
Starting point is 01:09:16 And, again, that's why none of us's fans can be in charge, because we would like give Paul Seawald one more opportunity and then send him packing. But yeah, man, it's great to have Alec Thomas back. And I know we haven't had many, you know, too much time. And I know Alex Thomas is still kind of getting back, you know, but tonight was a huge step for that young man. And I feel like not only was it great to see him get that big hit, but it's just, it's just great to kind of like contribute in that way to the team
Starting point is 01:09:48 where you do in fact feel like you're. back. Totally. Yeah, Alec, we also talk to Alec about just kind of how he's feeling at the plate. I think there's been a little bit of tough luck. His number since, you know, since coming off the injured list aren't anything, aren't special at all. But, you know, a grand slam is a grand slam. And I think he's had some other pretty good swings as well.
Starting point is 01:10:09 He had a particularly good one against the left-handed reliever in this game, just a hard line shot pretty deep into center field. There was one of those the other day as well against the Dodgers, Mick Ramirez. that was just yesterday. So against lefties, Thomas, it has appeared to be looking better, at least taking some good swings, even though the results in the box score might not show it yet. So, yeah, I mean, Alec Thomas at the beginning of the season, Derek, was someone we identified as like a potential breakout candidate for this team who was working on making some swing
Starting point is 01:10:41 changes, trying to figure things out against lefties and just trying to, in general, get to the level of hitter that a lot of people thought he could be when he first. came into the big league. So even though the numbers still don't look great, I think he has a 684 OPS or something like that, even after the Grand Slam tonight, you know, don't write off Alec Thomas after, what has it been, like 20, 30 plate appearances at this point in the season,
Starting point is 01:11:05 this is still a guy who has... What we do. That's fair. But this is still a guy who I think has a reasonably high ceiling being as young as he is. Another thing, again, that I think we kind of, gloss over with this loss is that Corby Carroll, Gabby Moreno, they all contributed tonight. A lot of the guys that have been struggling feel like, you know, they're struggling.
Starting point is 01:11:32 Of course, after the monster weekend, Christian Walker, or again, I still feel like it's the weekend, Fourth of July. Forgive me, after the Monster Week, Christian Walker's had, he went 0 for five today with two strikeouts. But it's great to see Lourdes stringing some games together, another multi-hit game for him. Gabby Moreno was one for three tonight with a walk. Corby and Carol, those two doubles and it was two for five. So again, it's like there's a lot of things.
Starting point is 01:11:57 Jock, of course, had that big home run. He was two for three. There's a lot of positives here about this game. It's just at the end of the day, it's hard to feel positive after watching Seawald blow that save. And again, I also think, like you said, it was such a bad performance by Seawald. It wasn't like, oh, hey, one guy just got him.
Starting point is 01:12:17 And that was unfortunate, like, no, it was home run, walk, home run. So hopefully Paul C. Walt can, you know, get right. And I mean, if there's anybody I trust, it's the dad, it's our dad, it's our dad of the bullpen, right? Like, come on, dads have tough nights. Sometimes you just got picked that up. Let's all go out for ice cream. Maybe we'll get a movie on on direct TV.
Starting point is 01:12:39 Like, we'll pay for it. The good, you know, new movie. We'll see one of those. But anyway, it's interesting to see how this team obviously reacts to this law. they reacted pretty positively the last time. Yeah, Wall Blue is saved. So that's the sacrifice we have to make to see them come out
Starting point is 01:12:57 and possibly pummel the Padres the way that they did to the Dodgers in the next two games. I'm all for it. Yeah, a couple, things. First of all, Cewald pretty much, you may notice we don't have any video of CWall. Seawall declined to speak with the media tonight,
Starting point is 01:13:13 which I think we can all understand why that is. obviously he's taking this pretty hard. You know, it's one thing for a closer to have a rough night and blow a save that's going to happen, but I think I think the emotional like high and low that we were talking about
Starting point is 01:13:30 earlier, like I can't imagine what it's like for Seawall to go through that. You know, not expecting to pitch in this game, frankly, and then suddenly he's got an 8-7 lead to work with in a tight game facing 2, 3, 4 in the Padres' lineup he has his worst doubting of the season and, you know, he's not, it's not a correct statement to say the debacks lost this game just because of Paul Seawalt.
Starting point is 01:13:52 But I, you know, I imagine those are the kinds of thoughts running through his head when this could have been such a big emotional win for the defects. I speculated, Jesse, that was this maybe a situation where we forgot in M.L.B. the show. There was time. I suspect the only of time at all a factor. Do you think maybe for Seawalt's preparation and, you know, all of a sudden having to get up the minute he sees, maybe Alec hit that grand slam and start throwing and not even think that they
Starting point is 01:14:28 were going to even have a ninth inning? Yeah, I heard like 60% of what you said. Maybe it was just on my end. Your audio got a little a little muffled there, at least for me. But I know what your question was. about like the timing for Seawald and maybe how that could have played into things. It's a totally fair question. You know, maybe we'll,
Starting point is 01:14:47 maybe we'll be able to get an answer on the impact that could have had in the coming days. But I mean, even if it did have an impact, like Seawald, it's not going to, he's not the type of guy to use that as an excuse in any kind of a situation. And I'm sure he's, he's really wearing this one for,
Starting point is 01:15:01 for his teammate. So, yeah, certainly rough day for him. I also have to say, Derek, that this was a bit of a rough day, not just for, not just for Seawald, but also.
Starting point is 01:15:10 So for us, the reporters who are here in San Diego covering this series, normally I don't like to point out our blunders, like on the post game show, because that just feels like a losing thing to do. But today, our blunder was so, honestly, so hilarious that I feel like I have to bring it up. So, you know, Seawall, we weren't going to be able to talk to Seawald. And so thinking of all, you know, other guys in the clubhouse who could maybe shed some light on exactly what happened just so we could get some comment on his outing. And actually, we'd go to Gabriel Moreno,
Starting point is 01:15:43 because Gabriel Moreno started this game at catcher, and certainly did not switch to playing third base in the ninth inning when Seawald entered the game. No, he actually did switch to play third base in the ninth inning. And Jose Herrera was catching while Sevald was throwing. None of us noticed that, Derek. And so we went up to Gabriel Moreno after this game and asked him about like,
Starting point is 01:16:07 oh, where was this pitch supposed to be? Like, what do you think was going on with Seawalt tonight? When, in fact, Gabby was playing third base and not actually catching in that moment. And Gabby was incredibly nice about it. It was like answering our question for a while. And then eventually he couldn't help himself and like started giggling. It was like, yeah, guys, I wasn't catching. I was actually playing third base.
Starting point is 01:16:29 Was he just making up fake answers? Is that? Because that's even better if you were lying to you guys. He wasn't making up fake answers. He was so nice about it. He was trying to give genuine answers. And then eventually we were asking questions that were so specific, like about specific pitch calls.
Starting point is 01:16:46 And at that point, he had no choice but to unveil like, yeah, guys, I was, I don't know, I was playing a third base. And then the three of us all, yeah, we all felt like idiots, which is, yeah, sort of embarrassing, but also kind of hilarious at the same time, but somehow none of us noticed that. And that's another thing that I feel like we have to talk about, Derek. Gabriel Moreno played third base in this game for the Diamondbacks, which is something that we have not seen.
Starting point is 01:17:13 Why? Because Catelle Marte was removed from the game. Jake McCarthy had already come in and pinch hit for Eugenio Suarez. So Suarez was out of the game. And oddly enough, this is actually a question that we asked or that I asked pregame. If people remember in yesterday's game in L.A. Eugenio Suarez was ejected. and Geraldo Perdomo was also right there in that fray.
Starting point is 01:17:38 And Tori Lavello after yesterday's game made the point that the best thing Walker did in that game was wild to say. He said the best thing Walker did in that game was holding back Perdomo and making sure the debacks didn't lose their shortstop because this team only has one backup infielder right now. Kevin Newman is the only backup infielder on this roster. So if the debacks lose two of their infielders, then they're forced to do what they did tonight, which was. play Gabriel Moreno at third base in order in order to make the pieces fit together. So the fact that we asked that question before today's game and then it wound up being very, very relevant by the end. We got to see what the D-BACs alignment is there.
Starting point is 01:18:20 They went with Moreno at third base. They brought in Herrera to catch. Just a pretty, pretty crazy, pretty crazy turn of events. Well, and that's, I mean, again, I maybe I'm just, again, I have this bad out. I'm ready to, I'm ready to riot. I'm ready to blame somebody. I'm ready to, you know, of course, get my revenge. But how much does Jose Herrera maybe have to blame for what happened there in the ninth inning?
Starting point is 01:18:46 I mean, not to put it on him. Obviously, Paul C. Walt's the pitcher there. He gave up home runs. But again, I mean, Jose Herrera versus Gabby, the guy in the plate seems like a bit of a downgrade. Obviously, it was due to circumstances. But it still feels like maybe that had also an impact. on why we saw things turn on them there in the bottom of the ninth. I just, I think it's, you know, it's a downgrade in terms of overall catching defense.
Starting point is 01:19:12 There's no doubt about that. I mean, Gabby won the Gold Club Award last year for a reason. But I'm not sure it's necessarily a downgrade from like a pitch calling perspective. Herrera, I think is very, very well respected, very well liked by the Diamondbacks pitching staff. So, and he actually got some calls. I don't know if it was necessarily Herrera's framing, but. Seawald was a little all over the place in this outing, and a couple of the called strikes that he did get were definitely not strikes.
Starting point is 01:19:42 So you could even give credit to Herrera maybe for, you know, for framing those well and, you know, giving Seawald a couple of extra calls in his favor. But, yeah, I don't really think Herrera. Yeah, those might have just been mercy calls. I'm not sure what was going on there. But yeah, yeah, there were some calls on the outside there that he got for sure. but anyway, hopefully, like I said, the Diamondbacks rebound the way that they rebounded in the Dodgers series.

Starting point is 01:22:08 I would not describe it as brown. I would describe it as maroon. I think that, yeah, maybe the lighting makes it look a little bit brown, but yeah, it's more of a reddish maroon color. Okay. I know. I've seen that shirt in person. I wanted to let you answer it. I've stuck up for Tori tonight.
Starting point is 01:22:27 I've stuck up for, I think I stuck up for Paul Seawald there. I didn't mean to. I was just asking if there was an impact or a drop off. I wasn't trying to look for more excuses for Paul. Mays Devil is laughing because he said that Pisa Yoshi really paid two bucks to ask about a brown shirt. You know what? I wasn't going to ask him about the shirt until somebody did pay Mays Devils. So I'm glad he did.
Starting point is 01:22:49 Of course, Brian Page says keen to see Fought Masterclass and Pershing. and tomorrow too. Ryan, we hope you do. We hope Jesse does. Shout out. Shout out Ryan Page, by the way. If I'm remembering correctly,
