Starting point is 00:00:00 Trey Yassavage led the Blue Jays to a game five victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. And I can't help but wonder, do we have one of those in our system? Do we have one of those at home? We are exploring the Diamondbacks minor league options for pitchers that could maybe step up in the same way this young man has for the Blue Jays in the World Series. And we're talking about it in 30 seconds. Don't you go anywhere. And welcome in to another edition of the PHNXDbacks podcast live from Studio K, Presented by our friends at Circle K, it is I, your mayor of PHNX,
Starting point is 00:00:50 occasionally known as Derek Montia. Thrilled to be here on a Thursday morning in beautiful downtown Arizona, downtown Phoenix. Thrilled to be here with my guy, Kevin Thomas, aka Large Intimate. The band is back together. Got Kevin on the ones and twos. Hopefully this episode won't end the same way our working relationship ended. But you never know when pro wrestling is involved.
Starting point is 00:01:14 ski to you all. Great to see you guys here. Deborah, Zabe. We already got a Marte for you Savage trade in the in the chat. And quite frankly, I'd consider it after what I just saw. Welcome into all you guys. Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365. In Game Time, make sure to use that code of Bet 365 or PHNX 365 when you sign up over there at 365. Get yourself some bonus bets over at Game Time. Use that code of PHNX. First time users will get $20 off your first ticket purchase on those already low last. minute ticket deals. Kevin, I know you have been wrapped up in U of A. I know you have been wrapped up in all sorts of things that aren't baseball related, but are you firmly planted in the in the, in the,
Starting point is 00:01:57 in the, in the, in the blue jays bandwagon right now? Are we, are we one here when it comes to wanting to see the blue jays get the job done against this villainous Dodgers team? Certainly. I mean, I stayed up all night for all, what was it, 18 innings? You did? other night and I was thoroughly disappointed, right? It was. It felt like one of those moments that we all collectively watch together, not just baseball fans.
Starting point is 00:02:20 And that was on the sports equinox, right? That was the day where we had all of those sporting events happening on the same day. I had a Nerfee that day that hit. But yeah, no, like I was there for all 18 innings and I was thoroughly disappointed with the ending, just like everybody else that resides outside of Los Angeles. Of course. But yeah, I know that during our little social hit for this, like our social media. of people. They had us do like a series predictions. I really didn't want to give a prediction.
Starting point is 00:02:45 So I said, can we cancel it? Kind of joking. But in all reality, like this series has been so much fun. And it's really cool that the Blue Jays are up three to two, giving us the chance to save baseball, Derek. Yeah, we got to save baseball. The Blue Jays have to save baseball. You are 100% right. They win yesterday's game by a score of 6 to 1. And you love to see it. Tray Savage, obviously, is the big story here. His rise from single A this season. into dominating in game five of the World Series is something that is going to be talked about for a very long time. We are living through moments of seeing some great baseball, but things, again, like
Starting point is 00:03:23 Shohei Otani and just his in general career are going to be a story that's talked about for decades and ages to come. Obviously, though, this young man and what he has done is incredible. The rookie sensation struck out 12 over seven innings in game five. They're at Dodgers Stadium setting the all-time rookie record for strikeouts in the fall classic, once held by Don Newcomb of the 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers. I also think we have a Sarah Lang's tweet here that once again just kind of displays what this man did that's so historic. Trey Savage struck out all nine batters in the Dodgers starting lineup,
Starting point is 00:04:06 becoming the third pitcher in World Series history to strike out. each batter in a starting lineup, joining Randy Johnson in game two of the 2001 World Series and Bob Gibson in game one of the 1968 World Series. Those men were not rookies when they did it either. That's the other thing about this is this is just such an incredible feat by a guy that is, again, as we've talked about with his story, man. I mean, a kid that started out the season in high A,
Starting point is 00:04:39 played, I believe, seven games in there before advancing. And he just advanced his way all the way up from single A, all the way up to AAA, making his debut there at the end of the season for the Blue Jays. Currently making $57,000 a year in Major League Baseball as a late inning call-up for the minors. And he then struck out 12 of the Dodgers lineup who currently make $148 million. this year. Baseball and money, that's fun, isn't it? It's fun. It's fun. But, I mean, the Blue Jays opened the game with back-to-back home runs.
Starting point is 00:05:17 That was historic as well. The first inning back-to-back home runs to start a world home game with home runs is first time ever. And again, you just feel like the momentum has completely shifted in the Jay's favor here. You got Davis Schneider, who I have never once again seen a human being who looked more, like his name should be Davis Schneider than Davis Schneider, right? He's a delight, by the way. The broadcast keeps trying to figure out whose batting stance he's stealing because he just
Starting point is 00:05:50 randomly uses other people's batting stances like he's batting stance guy from social media. Some of you might know him. But also then you also have Vladdy Guerrero Jr. doing that thing he does, which is mash the ball. On the Davis-Schneider point before we move on. Did you see his sister's tweet? Oh, she dunked on. She was dunking on guys. She was dunking on people on Twitter. Some guy named Ross put out there, Davis Schneider leadoff is an effing choice.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Yeah. Laughing my ass off. Yeah. She quotes, we did it later and said, the right one, I guess. The right one, I guess. He's not, she wasn't wrong. And again, I mean, this was just an incredible feat, the first time in World Series history. That team began with a consecutive home runs. And then that early 2-0 lead, forced the Dodgers, you know, forced Blake Snell there to kind of be in trouble. He did an excellent job of pitching kind of around that situation and once again being Blake Snell,
Starting point is 00:06:45 but very much thought we were going to see another outing like we saw the last time that the Blue Jays were really able to get to Snyder in game one. The Dodgers only managed four hits in this game overall and struck out 15 times. Again, I mean, these guys are, this is the lineup, right? The big thing I'm seeing is Dodgers fans talk about how the Dodgers ruined baseball and how this is supposed to be some sort of indication that they didn't. Just because the guys that you paid an ungodly amount of money to aren't performing in the postseason,
Starting point is 00:07:19 that has no impact on what you have done to the game of baseball and how unfair the Dodgers have essentially made the game of baseball. Them losing is just fun. Them losing just means that no matter how much. money you spend, you still can't buy a title in baseball, even though they basically did that last year. And I'm not taking anything here away from the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are also top five in spending, right? But when we talk about the Blue Jays being top five in spending, I believe, if I'm mistaken, that they still spent about $100 million less than the Dodgers did. So even though they're
Starting point is 00:07:57 top five in spending, the difference there even at the top can be an insane amount of money, right? But But again, the lineup shuffle there for the Dodgers didn't seem to work. In fact, if anything, it felt like it got less production from that Dodgers lineup. And honestly, I mean, this was a game where once again, as I said in yesterday's game in game four, the Dodgers look out of gas. They look like they are cooked. And I felt like they looked that after, you know, the start of game four. after that eight in a 18 inning marathon. I truly feel like this might be a situation where even though they won that battle that disappointed Kevin and myself so much after watching all 18 innings of that game, they did not win the war.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And they might not win the war here because it really does feel like the Blue Jays have taken, taken over. And, you know, now are in the driver's seat. They have two opportunities to close out the World Series. And both of those opportunities will be back at the Rogers Center in Toronto. But what I will say here overall is that this was a must-win game for the Blue Jays because they do have Yoshinobu Yamamoto to deal with on the horizon on Friday. And it's no ghost. That's no scary monster on the hill on Halloween.
Starting point is 00:09:18 That is a man that has dominated this postseason. And quite frankly, it almost feels like you have to chalk a Yamamoto start up as a win immediately for the Dodgers. Should that be the case? And overall, I feel like this is gearing up to be one of the best world series of all time. Like, I feel like that's what we need from it in order for it to be categorized as that. It needs to go to seven games. Not that I want to see that. I would much rather see the Blue Jays close this thing out in six and send us all home happy and quite frankly fat with bags full of candy.
Starting point is 00:09:54 But I just can't get over what Trey Yassavage did in that game yesterday, what he did. as a young man. I mean, this guy just seven innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, zero walks, 12 strikeouts. You know, again, you just have the Dodgers lineup overall struggling here so far, and it feels like the Dodgers lineup has kind of struggled the entire off season. I bring this up again because the Toronto Blue Jays have done a much better job here. And not only getting those big moments where they, you know, get those home runs,
Starting point is 00:10:30 they got that early lead, but they were able to tack on. You know, you got the Blaise, Blue Jays adding more damage in the fourth inning with a sack fly by Ernie Clement. Big dog, big earn, Ernie Clement that scored former deback Dalton Varsho in the seventh inning. A run scored on a walk. And then an RBI single by Bo Bichette. That single, that extended the lead to five to one again, can't say enough about what Bo Bouchet has been doing for this team upon his return. It really feels like Bichette has allowed the. Blue Jays to not really miss a step with the loss of George Springer.
Starting point is 00:11:03 It took Bichette a game, quite a few of bats there to get back into the swing of things, but he is really contributing to this team. And overall, again, we even saw Isaiah Kinnerfalafa, Kinafala, excuse me, hit an RBI single there to make the game six to one. And he has struggled, but his defense has been great. He contributed offensively yesterday. The Blue Jays are just getting it from their entire lineup, you know, from one through nine. And that's, I think, the big difference here.
Starting point is 00:11:32 You don't really feel scared of those Dodgers hitters once you get past Freddie Freeman. And to be fair, those guys at the top of the lineup, they haven't been really delivering. In fact, Mookie Betts has been awful this series overall. And he proclaimed that himself. So can't really disagree with him there based on what, you know, the way that this postseason has gone for him. But also the little Betts meme that's going around. That's hilarious to me. But Trey Savage, by the way, so dialed in yesterday that people thought that this man in the clubhouse was just getting fired up.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Like, this is a tweet that went out. This is from pitching ninja. This was Trey I Savage on the broadcast yesterday. Headphones on, dialed in probably listening to some crazy, hardcore heavy metal music or something. Yeah. And he explained this particular. shot and said, I saw something on Instagram that someone took a video of me on my phone saying I was locked in.
Starting point is 00:12:35 But I was just doom scrolling on TikTok and Instagram Reels. He really is one of us. The Dodgers think that they need all these elite Japanese prospects, all this money, all this funding. You just need like a brain-rotted 20-something. Right. That's what I'm learning. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:54 That's what I took away from that. And I mean, you don't need to bother him beforehand either. You just need to let him do his thing. Like with most teenagers, right? You just don't bother the young men. You don't bother the young people. You let them sit on their phone, right? You ask them how their day was.
Starting point is 00:13:09 They grunt at you. You accept that as an answer and a conversation. And then you let them go about their business. And they will achieve great things as Trey Savage did. Skip walking past, Skip walking past Trey Savage. Like, how are you feeling today, Trey? Hey, I'm telling you. I'm telling you sometimes.
Starting point is 00:13:29 that's the key. But again, Mookie Betts, three for 23 in the World Series and he himself said, and I quote, I've just been terrible. Three for 22 is bad, right, Derek? Yeah, that's pretty bad. It's not good.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Well, and again, it's, this is what I said about the Diamondbacks late in the season. This is the fantasy football conundrum as you and I have been going through, right? Fantasy football conundrum, you have a great player that hasn't been performing, but you know the week you bench him to go for a long shot. That's going to be the week.
Starting point is 00:14:06 He goes off for three touchdowns and 175 all-purpose yards. And Mookie Betz is that that's a problem right now for the Dodgers in a way because you know Mookie Betts is Mookie Betts. You're not going to sit them. You're not going to take him out of the lineup. You're not going to move him down in the lineup because you just simply feel like at any given time he can go out there and go four for five for you in one of these games. be the hero, right? But baseball is baseball. And struggles are compounded by the situation. When you're
Starting point is 00:14:35 struggling in something as big as the World Series, I can only imagine how much those struggles are compounded by how big the moment is for him and how much, quite frankly, you want to turn things around. You want to play well for your team, but it's not that simple with baseball. And again, the more you press, the more you try to make it happen, the more you end up being in a situation, like Betz is going three for 23. Last night in the game, Shohay Otani, 0 for 4, Will Smith, 1 for 4,
Starting point is 00:15:06 Muki Betts, O for 4. Freddie Freeman, 0 for 3. The billion dollar lineup does it again. And they're susceptible. They're human, right? I still think that they might have celebrated the World Series victory after game three entirely too hard.
Starting point is 00:15:23 You know, you saw them in the clubhouse, you saw the lights on, and you saw everybody celebrating. Meanwhile, you had, as I discussed before, you had our guy Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in his clubhouse being a leader, telling his teammates not to hang their heads and telling them blast that music, yo. We need to get our vibes right and we need to come out tomorrow in game four strong. And they did that in game four and they did it again last night in game five. And you just love to see it because once again, baseball is baseball.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Baseball is a game where you have a guy like Big Earn Clement, coming through for you, where you have a guy like Davis Schneider that people even of their own fan base are criticizing, being hitting leadoff. Yet somehow it worked and somehow this team is coming together at the right time. Barger, by the way, Barger is a, is a gamer. Like when I see Addison Barger out there doing what he's doing for the Blue Jays, like it's pretty incredible. It's, you know, he robbed, I forget who it was. I think it was Otani on 117.3 mile per hour line drive, diving catch. Only 13 Major League Baseball hitters hit a single ball that hard in the entire year of 2025.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Balls like that simply just don't get caught according to metrics and analytics and everything like that. And again, he's just one of those guys that seems to make things happen on the base path, get on base and be there for his team. So scrappy guys like that are the kind of guys that come out of nowhere and win you a World Series. But I'll tell you, nobody has emerged more than Trey Yassavage and what he did. Yesterday, he was incredible. And we are going to talk more not only about where the hell he came from and how he made this rise so fast, but if the Diamondbacks, in fact, have a Trey Yassavage at home, fingers crossed they do.
Starting point is 00:17:23 We're going to talk about that on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere you're watching the PH and X Diamondback show. Starting point is 00:18:45 Derek, don't you wish that MLB Free Agency had like a zone deal thing for their prospects? Yeah, can I just, can I? Where you can I see like a green dot over a pitcher? Right. to know if they're going to be healthy all year. Or more importantly, like, just like, hey, I need a mid-tier starting pitcher in this price range. I'm going to let you pick it if it's going to get us like maybe half a million dollars, million dollars off of his annual value on that. That's how convenient game time is.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Oh, it's so convenient. It's so convenient. It takes the guess workout. It's like your own scout. Yeah, doing work for you. Also, of course, moments are never ordinary over at Bet365. I'm not sure if you're aware of that, but whatever the moment is never ordinary at 366. They have over 90 million users worldwide. Also, football offers throughout the entire season. They have offers on same game parlays on Sundays.
Starting point is 00:20:02 They got an NFL Thursday night touchdown offer where you can see yourself getting paid out for the last touchdown score as well as the first touchdown score potentially. And so much more early payout offers on college football and NFL. And of course, the NBA season is here. So we have tip off Tuesdays and early payout. offers on NHL hockey as well. If you are someone you know as a gambling problem wants help, call one and your next step.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Text next step to 533442 or visit problemgambling.az.gov. Deborah in the chat asks, where is the moose? We gave the moose the night off because there's no baseball game being played today, but don't you worry. The moose will be here tomorrow on Halloween to cheer on his Toronto Blue Jays, along with Kevin Thomas and I, and all three of us will in fact be in costume. So you've got to stop by for that. But I know this is a simple, stupid idea here to even talk about because, of course, now, after seeing what Trey Yassavage did in the playoffs, we want him. Every team wants him.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Every GM wants him. Every single team is coveting this man and wondering how did he get past us. At least the Arizona Diamondbacks do not have to regret or lament not drafting Yassavage because he was drafted in 2024. the season, essentially the draft after the Diamondbacks went all the way to the World Series. So the Diamondbacks being the losers in that World Series got the second to last draft spot. The Rangers get the final one. And the Diamondbacks, of course, don't have to sit here and cry tears that they did not draft this young man because he was drafted, I believe, five, six, seven, eight spots before the Diamondbacks had a chance to pick.
Starting point is 00:22:13 They took Slade Caldwell with their pick in that round, and then they took Ryan Waldschmidt on the other side. So they still have themselves some good young prospects that they got in that same draft. But when you see what you Savage was doing with his fastball that has good kind of rise and good carry there, high release point, and that just quality slider and splitter, those two things that don't do what sliders and splitters do. It just feels like we are just seeing the very beginning of what this young man can do. his strikeouts per nine innings have been very high in the minors indicating that he is just the ability to pinpoint his stuff and you know miss bats which is pretty advanced for his age and then again we've heard quite a bit about his bulldog mentality and how his teammates feel about him right so it's like this is a man that's mature beyond his years but this is also a man that just made his debut in major league baseball on september on september 15th to 2025 for the Blue Jays. And in his debut, he struck out nine batters in five innings,
Starting point is 00:23:23 setting a franchise record for most strikeouts in a debut for the Blue Jays. He's not Paul Skeens. He's not the Mizz. He's not some of these bigger young names that kind of got, I think, a lot of, that they were talked about quite a bit before they made their debut. But, man, since he has joined, you know, this Blue Jays team, he's just been a standout. I mean, in the ALDS versus the New York Yankees, he pitched five and two-thirds innings, no-hit baseball with 11K.
Starting point is 00:23:51 In the World Series, obviously, he did what he did yesterday, striking out 12 Dodgers and allowing one-earned run over seven innings, setting a rookie record for strikeouts in a World Series game. So these performance just prove that the Blue Jays instantly have an ace, a young ace. And he seems like a guy that is not only going to be good for years to come, but, you know, again, he's going to be here. for years of control, right? So the Diamondbacks have many, many pitching shortcomings to deal with this offseason. And we're going to talk about a few options that they might have, one who is playing right now
Starting point is 00:24:27 in the Arizona Fall League that could help bolster their bullpen. But as far as the options go within their system, we're taking a look at at least five pitchers here that the Diamondbacks could see flourish at a major league level once they make their debuts. And of course, the one name that I, instantly have to go to first is Daniel Egan, because Daniel Egan has been doing some impressive things in the Diamondbacks minor league system. As far as I am concerned, Daniel
Starting point is 00:24:55 Egan is the next starting rotation pitcher for the D-backs. And I know he still has a little development time to go, but, you know, Trey Yassavage's year makes me feel like, you know, a guy spending a lot of times in the minors might not necessarily be, necessary. Obviously, what they saw in him was a guy that was Major League Ready, and that dates back to, you know, him making his first start here this season in single A. But does feel like the Diamondbacks who are kind of in need of some guys coming along, you know, might have those guys. And Daniel Egan might absolutely be one of those guys. He's a right-handed starter. He's six foot four. Again, he was drafted in the third round of that 2024 draft the same year that Tradeus Savage was
Starting point is 00:25:43 drafted out of Presbyterian College. His fastball sits at 93, 94 miles per hour, can touch 96 mile per hour. And in his first pro season, he dominated for the Hillsborough Hopps, earning pitcher of the month awards and just showing that he has a good mix of breaking stuff. And he's even developing a fourth pitch.
Starting point is 00:26:04 He has three solid pitches. But overall, his size, his arm strength, and quite frankly, what expert scouts have projected for him his trajectory as a prospect suggests that he has a very high ceiling and again it's since being drafted in 2024 it gives him a runway a little bit here
Starting point is 00:26:27 to develop into a front line starter. However, the Diamondbacks may call upon him as soon as the 2026 season based on need. I mean, again, he's still early in his career and he's less tested right now at the AA, AAA level. But we know what happens to pitchers at the AA and AAA level in the Diamondbacks organization. They play at that beautiful stadium in Hodge Town for the Amarillo Sod Poodles and get rocked. And then they get to AAA and play for the Reno Aces and things don't get much better.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Both of those ballparks are very hitter-friendly ballparks. Both have high elevations and it doesn't make it very easy for you to continue dominating at that level once you get to double A or once you get to the PCL. right so he still has you know some refinement there to go with his pitch mix uh he's got to increase his consistency as every young pitcher does uh and again uh he has to manage that jump from one level to the next to show that he's ready you know and that he's able to take on that level of talent that we haven't seen out of him yet i don't want the diamondbacks to rush his development because again i do believe strongly in daniel hegan as a rising arm within their system he has the potential to be A two, three, maybe even a one guy.
Starting point is 00:27:46 But I don't think he's ready to carry that in the same way. As Savage has carried that right now for the Blue Jays. But he is definitely, it should be in the conversation if everything aligns for him. And this team can, you know, quite frankly, can find that they believe he's ready and need him. Like, again, the Diamondbacks, by the time he's ready, they might be in a position where Corbin Burns has returned and perhaps whatever other options. that they've come up with for the first half of the season have worked out. However, again, he might end up seeing time as a starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks as early as next season. Another guy who you could say that about is someone who they just traded for.
Starting point is 00:28:25 They received in the Merrill Kelly trade. And that's Cole Drake. We did a diamond mine on Cole Drake. And I really like this young man based on his resiliency and his persistence. He struggled early on his career, was kind of told that, you know, like maybe he wouldn't make And instead, he turned around and just kept getting better. In the Texas Rangers organization at a double A level with the Frisco Rough Riders, he posted a 2.44 ERA, a 0.98 whip, and 70 strikeouts in 55 and a third innings pitched. And again, the minute that he became an Arizona Diamondback after that trade for Merrill Kelly, he instantly became one of the top prospects in the organization.
Starting point is 00:29:08 We still don't know much about him, but I feel like he's one of these guys that just, works really hard. He's a left-handed starter with plus strikeout stuff. That's rare. It's highly coveted, highly valued. And again, he's shown that he has that upside to pitch at a major league level. Again, there's just some things. The jump was a little more difficult from him from AA to AAA in Round Rock. He kind of had a higher ERA adjustment period kind of there. But came around. And I mean, he experienced an injury that made him lose some time. But he's still also, much like Daniel Egan has a very high ceiling, and he is a definite starting rotation candidate for the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:29:48 He also might require a bit more seasoning, and I think based on the injury, he might have had a little bit of a setback, but his timeline, based on where he's at, might be on a similar path as Daniel Egan. And both of these guys could be a big, big part of the Diamondback starting rotation sooner than I think even, you know, we might imagine, right?
Starting point is 00:30:09 But there's a couple of them. other long shots, especially guys that already have some major league experience that could potentially be that next guy for the Diamondbacks. I know one of those is Gilbert Diaz. Like, Gilbert Diaz, again, he hasn't had the best seasoning, doesn't, hasn't, or season hasn't had his best stuff at times. He's experienced a lot of ups and downs already in his young career, going from a guy that at one time pitched at a major league level, making his debut in 2024. And having, you showing that his fastball, his mid-90s fastball was great and could work at a major league level. He also had two secondary pitches and a change-up that he was developing.
Starting point is 00:30:51 But overall, again, he's kind of had his ups and downs overall in majors. He was actually in AAA and was sent down to AA and just experienced injuries and other things that couldn't really avoid. But you still feel like with Jill Ber Diaz at the raw. The raw stuff is there and that he can still pitch at a major league level, whereas, or at least he's proven that he can pitch at a major league level where we still don't know about some of these other guys. Umin Lin, our baby boy, Corn.
Starting point is 00:31:25 He is a guy that I would love to see become the next trade you savage for this team. And I mean, yeah, he's not super big, but he is a quality left-handed pitcher. His velocity isn't necessarily elite, but he does offer a solid variety of secondary pitches. I don't even know of secondary pitches. You can just say that in general, his breaking stuff is his primary stuff. He has a sweeper and change up that are very deceptive. And again, just having yet another exciting young left-handed pitcher in the organization in the system makes you feel like, you know, you feel like you men, Lynn will not only, you know, see playing time at a major league level,
Starting point is 00:32:06 but could also be a big part of this rotation. He's on track to maybe be there this year, right? And again, I don't know what the Diamondbacks decide to do. I don't know what kind of impact he can make potentially during spring training. I don't know if decisions will, quite frankly, be made already before that point so that maybe spring training really isn't an opportunity for these guys to win a spot in the starting rotation. But the Diamondbacks need to figure that portion out, specifically the starting rotation. And again, even though he lacks the prototypical size and velocity of a starting pitcher in Major League baseball, it still feels like that breaking stuff is really, really good.
Starting point is 00:32:48 He does need to still work on his command. And, I mean, again, I don't know if you can work on velocity, but, you know, again, that does make Lynn a compelling under the radar option that might be ready sooner, just like Jill Ber Diaz, that might be a sooner option than those other two guys who might still have a little bit more in their development. to go. Yeah, Savage's, the 20-25 season has completely ruined my ability to be objective to how much time these prospects need in order for them to develop. And I've been big on that because I don't like when the Diamondbacks are, you know, they're just impatient and they need a body so they impact, impede one of their young players' development just to get them up and get them in the bullpen or get them in the rotation.
Starting point is 00:33:31 However, you know, maybe some guys, you know, you want to see what they can do, especially when they've done what you perceive is all they can do at a double A and AAA level, especially in this organization with those ballparks and those leagues being very difficult and very offensive powered, I guess you could say, not pitcher-friendly. But one last name I'll give you to keep an eye out for is Spencer Geisting. He's another left-handed pitcher in the system. And he is definitely a sleeper. He's probably less likely.
Starting point is 00:34:01 to become anything that you would consider a true ace. But if things break his way, he could be. He was drafted in the 11th round of 2022. Again, another 6'4 left-hander, had some strong strikeout numbers in 2025, and just overall his size plus being a lefty and developing a bit more this season could make him another guy that the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:34:26 could look to and count on. He's a name we've seen within the system quite a bit. And again, his consistency and durability remains a question as, you know, as as it remains a question for a lot of these guys at a young level. But I do think that Spencer Geisting is once again a guy that we could definitely see here pitch for the Diamondbacks next season. It's nothing is really off the table for this team. And the development of guys like Trey make you feel like, again, you at least want to give someone an option or an opportunity. at a major league level, especially if you feel like they've done all they can do in the minors. And I'm not saying that's necessarily the case with all of these guys, but some of their
Starting point is 00:35:09 developments might, some of their development might be faster than others. And again, I still am left in a position of not knowing what the Diamondbacks are going to do to fill all the roles that they need to fill. Pitching prospects are highly coveted, and they did a great job of acquiring many of them, you know, at this trade deadline. Quite frankly, if you look at what a lot of the players did that the Diamondbacks traded away, I don't really think that besides maybe Josh Naylor, that too many, you know, went somewhere else and flourish. So it feels like the right moves were made to improve this franchise going forward, even though
Starting point is 00:35:49 that day, that terrible day at the end of July felt horrible to see, you know, guys like Merrill Kelly and Gino and, you know, others move on, it still feels like here, now looking at some of the guys that the Diamondbacks do have because of those trades, like a Cole Drake, like a David Hagamon, that they are in a much better position than they would have been had they just decided to keep those players and let their contracts expire at the end of the season. So just something to keep in mind. And again, some players to keep an eye out on. Are any of these guys going to be the next trade you savage?
Starting point is 00:36:24 Probably not. Probably not. Let's be honest. He's a unicorn. He is a magical unicorn and the Blue Jays are very lucky to have him. But again, it doesn't mean that any of the Diamondbacks young players can't also one day transform into our own wonderful special unicorns on this team. But I do want to tell you guys, of course, about ASU hockey takeover happening next week, y'all. In one week, Friday, November 7. I can't believe, Kevin, that November. is here already. It's depressing. It feels, it feels, I'm glad, I'm glad it's here.
Starting point is 00:37:00 I mean, October kind of rips, though. October does rip. I'm a huge Halloween guy. I, I hate the fact that a World Series game is being played on Halloween. That part absolutely sucks, but. Why? Oh, you have a child, I guess. I have a child.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Well, like, I don't know. I get into it. I want to watch Halloween movies. I want to sit down and do a marathon of Treehouse of horror from the sims. I want to get in the spirit of things, right? I get it, though. We're moving into this world where sporting events happen more and more on holidays, and it kind of becomes part of the holiday, right?
Starting point is 00:37:36 Like Thanksgiving, you could say there's no doubt that football isn't a huge part of Thanksgiving. You know, the entire month of March is just March madness and spring training. So those holidays are ruined like St. Patrick's Day and whatnot. I don't even know if you, do you call that holiday? I don't know. I barely call Halloween the holiday, to be honest. Yeah, I mean, I guess we don't get. the day off, right? Like, can we go, can we get the day off and go trick-or-treat and dress up in
Starting point is 00:38:00 costumes? I'm going to make Kevin dress up in a couple's costume with me tomorrow. True. And he's excited for it. He couldn't be more pumped. But that's tomorrow. One week from tomorrow, though, Ph.NX is taken over Mollett. You can join Leah Merrill and the P.HNX hockey crew at ASU. Hockey taking on the Colorado College Tigers on Friday, November 7th. And like, that's a funny name because of... schools are weird, man. It feels like that the name of the school is Colorado and the mascot's
Starting point is 00:38:31 name is the college tigers, right? And I'm envisioning the mascot being like a preppy tiger wearing a letterman jacket, holding books, and being confused as to where to go. But the package does include a pregame meetup with a to be determined location with food and drink
Starting point is 00:38:47 included in Tempe, a game ticket in section 107 for the Sun Devils versus Tigers and Immaculate Hangs, obviously. with your favorite Valley Hockey Crew, so make sure to join us for that. It's going to be an absolutely great time. But you know what we do on Thursday, as you can see, the colors are changed around here. We're all set to be festive and have our own holiday.
Starting point is 00:39:11 And that holiday, of course, is what we call Throwback Thursday. And we're going to take a look back on some things that happened this week in Diamondback's history. And let me tell you, those things are getting fewer and farther between the later into October and November we get, Kevin. There's not a lot of history of this team during this time of the year. Flashing back to 2001. We do have to flashback to 2001. On October 28th, Randy Johnson hurled a three-hit complete game,
Starting point is 00:39:44 striking out 11 Yankees as the Diamondbacks win game two, four to nothing, and take a 2-0 lead in games in the World Series heading back to New York. We thought it was a wrap, Kevin. We thought it was done. We were planning parade routes. Luckily, we didn't have to cancel those. But we thought it was a wrap. And boy, did the Yankees make it interesting?
Starting point is 00:40:10 And the Yankees filled us with dread and filled us with that feeling that only we as Arizona sports fans know. And that is that this is going to collapse upon us and we're going to lose. And we're not going to get to experience this joy that we can. got to experience. It did take seven games, but we got there, and we got there because of Randy Johnson. I mean, think about that, man. I mean, we talk about what Yoshinobu Yamamoto is doing and how special it is. It's like you can't even really fathom a pitcher in today's day and age having a three-hit complete game. I mean, that's basically what Yamamoto just had. But I mean, here with Randy Johnson, a three-hit complete game, winning the game four to nothing is just legitimately
Starting point is 00:40:53 insane. I can't, you know, you just have these pitchers or not, not even pitchers, players in history, where you can't even imagine our history without them. And Randy Johnson is, is him. He is him for the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. There's no other player that I just can't imagine this team not having and still, you know, again, like living life and being happy and finding joy in things anymore. Thank you, Randy Johnson, for bringing that to me. Also, again, we talked about Max Scher being a person you didn't really talk to
Starting point is 00:41:30 on days where he was pitching. I guarantee you that from the time that Randy Johnson woke up on October 28, 2001, until 10 minutes after the game, no more than 20 words were uttered to him that entire day. No more. No more. There's no way. He wouldn't have been that good. Also on October 28, dating back not nearly as long ago, but to 2021, the Arizona Diamondbacks hired Joe Mather as their pitching coach from the Cincinnati Reds. And quite frankly, that is one hiring that is hard to say wasn't an actual home run for this team.
Starting point is 00:42:08 We didn't know the impact Mather would have. And quite frankly, I remember screaming his last name quite a bit when this team was like in the, I think in the terrible terrible uh, uh, droughts that they were in offensively during the 20, 22 season after he was hired, but he quickly turned things around. And since then, not only have the Diamondbacks reached a world series, but they've continued to be one of the top offenses in baseball, regardless of how absolutely God awful their pitching numbers are. So you cannot say that Joe Mather was, um, a mistake or that his hiring hasn't been a blessing
Starting point is 00:42:48 for this Arizona Diamondbacks team. A few days later, the Diamondbacks also hired former American League manager of the year, Jeff Bannister, as their bench coach. And I don't think I've ever enjoyed someone's cowboy-like presence in my life as much as Jeff Bannister. Jeff Bannister has been just an elite personality around Chase Field. And I think that, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:43:15 I think that there is a certain edge, as I've said in the past, that's needed for a baseball team to be successful. I know both of these teams in the World Series are very, very nice boys. But, I mean, just look at the way Dalton Varshot stares people down and tell me that guy's not ready to have a hockey style fight at any single moment at any time. But Jeff Bannister brings that edge to like our pitching or our coaching staff. And I think that's what's very much needed for a coaching staff. I don't think anybody wants to get into a kerfuffle, if you will, if you will, with the Diamondbacks because of Jeff Bannister sitting over there. I mean, how many fights have the Diamondbacks gotten into since Jeff Bannister has been the pitching coach? I'll let, or bench coach.
Starting point is 00:44:03 I'm all over the place with these mistakes, Kevin. Can you tally them up? How many have I made? Is it six or seven now? I did the thing. Six, seven. Six, seven. I have a 14-year-old.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Don't think that I can't. I make that joke all day long and it never doesn't hit. It's always, it's always on point. Also on November 1st, 2002, Christian Walker was named the 2002 National League Rawlings Gold Glove first baseman, marking the first of his career. And boy, do we miss that Christian Walker over their first base, especially now with the situation the Diamondbacks are in with their first base,
Starting point is 00:44:39 mess, I guess you could call it. It would be great to have Christian Walker. back over there, Christian Walker back over there anchoring this team at first base. I missed the song, Derek. What's that? I missed the song, the jingle. Yeah, no, we know. We've destroyed the MP3.
Starting point is 00:44:55 We'll never play it ever again. The video's been deleted. It's gone forever. And you can thank the Houston Astros for that. What if he comes back? I'll have to record a new one. There's probably going to be a new version of the song anyway by then that we're going to have to parody.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Yeah, true. I mean, they've had like 20 versions of that Burger King Wopper. song. So yeah, we'll have to get it recorded. But this entire week was a very good week back in 2023, I guess you could say, because we were excited during that run to be in the World Series.
Starting point is 00:45:27 On October 28th, Merrill Kelly in Game 2 retired his first 11 batters faced against the Texas Rangers, surpassing the record for most consecutive batters retired by a D-back starting pitcher to start a world series game
Starting point is 00:45:44 previously held by Andy Johnson, which he struck out 10 in that game, or retired 10 in that game we were just talking about, October 28th, 2001 in game 2 versus the Yankees. Kelly also became the first pitcher to record a victory in the World Series and the Korean series, the championship round of the KBO League. So there's a lot of history being made there on October 28th. And then on October 31st, the guy that we should probably be talking about the true, I guess, Trey Yassavage of the Diamondbacks pitching staff is Ryan Nelson.
Starting point is 00:46:18 And that's somebody who I failed to discuss mostly because Ryan Nelson is already on the starting pitching rotation. He's already somebody who we know we can count on and who has been doing it for the Diamondbacks. But, you know, again, when we talk about Yassavage and how lucky the Blue Jays are to have a young man in their system that has progressed the way he has, we are very lucky to have Ryan Nelson in our organization the way we have. I mean, on October 31st, on Halloween, 2003, Ryan Nelson pitched five in a third innings and relief in Game 4 versus the Rangers, marking the most by D-BACs reliever in franchise postseason history,
Starting point is 00:46:59 surpassing Zach Godley's five innings in 2017 in that NLDS game. And then, of course, we got Corv and Carroll, setting, making history as well with his stolen base in Game 5 on November 1st. versus the Rangers, he became the youngest player in franchise history to steal a base in the World Series at 23 years old and 72 days old. And then, of course, that same game, Alec Thomas and Gabriel Moreno were the first teebacks players in franchise history to hit four plus home runs in a single postseason ahead of Chris Young and Luis Gonzalez, who both had three in their respective postseason runs. So a lot of history being made, but none was as important as Ketel Marte collecting a hit in each of his first 20 career postseason games, the longest streak in Major League Baseball postseason history to begin a postseason career, the longest in MLB postseason period ahead of Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, and Hank Bauer,
Starting point is 00:48:00 and Marte's 24 hits in the 2023 postseason marked the most in a single postseason in franchise history. It's amazing to think back upon what Citell Marte did during that 2023 postseason run and just how good he has been. And quite frankly, how good the Diamondbacks were over that run. I know it ended a disappointment. I know it ended with us not winning the World Series. But still, you cannot help but be very proud of what this team accomplished over that stretch. From October 30th to November 1st, all three D-backs, 2023 World Series games at Chase Field against the. Rangers sold out prior to the start of the games and the D-back sold out all seven postseason
Starting point is 00:48:44 home games totaling over 330,000 fans that particular year. So fun run, fun run for this team and one that I would like to replicate again very soon. The future of this team, I can't lie, is not extremely bright right now, but so many components, so many of the pieces that made that 23 team special are still here and can be built around. That is what a core is about. That is why you establish a core, especially a young core that you're going to have under team control for a number of years because the pieces that make that team good around that core can change. They can be, that you can adapt, you can move from year to year. I think the biggest problem of that is that when we talk about the Diamondbacks core, it's hard to throw pitchers in them.
Starting point is 00:49:37 there. Ryan Nelson is probably worthy of being part of the Diamondbacks core and being built around going forward. But I don't know if you could immediately say the same thing about Brandon fought or anybody else within the Diamondbacks organization. They have extended fought and they have made him part of that core. So, you know, again, he is. But the Diamondbacks need to start figuring out a way to build the rest of the pieces around this team right now and specifically focus on pitching because that, as you can see so far here in this world, series and in the one the Diamondbacks one, that pitching was obviously the most important thing for this team overall.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Shout out to you guys. I'm looking at the chat and there are so many of you guys that are already supporters club members. Love you guys for that. If you're not a supporters club member yet, you can join on our YouTube page. It is very easy to do so. If you send us one super chat per month, that that $5 fee to be a part of the supporters club should be very comparable to that. that and we would appreciate that being part of the supporters club means a ton to us. We want to kick all the we want to kick the asses of all the other branches of all city in this family tree.
Starting point is 00:50:47 We want to be the most dominant when it comes to supporters club members. And of course, you guys can help us do that by joining. You get that badge next to your name that lets us know your supporters club member. That changes with time. That will tell you how long you've been a supporters club member. You guys are excellent. You guys are awesome as well. So again, we thank you guys all for the support. And of course, without you,
Starting point is 00:51:28 I wouldn't have the budget that I have for all of my dumb costumes. So speaking of which, it is time once again for us to check in on the Arizona Fall League with our segment that we call Fall Guys. Kevin, yeah, if you give me some, you need some time to change here, Kevin. Fall guys. It's the Fall guys. While Derek changes, I'll give you guys a fun fact. The Dodgers haven't lost three straight postseason games since they were swept by Arizona in the 2023 NLDS. That might be my favorite fact that we've ever covered on this show perhaps. not and they are in danger of that right they're in danger of that tonight yes oh or not tonight friday friday friday friday on halloween well i will not be wearing this costume on halloween i have a
Starting point is 00:52:14 completely other uh set of costumes picked out for me and kevin to wear i am thrilled to once again be talking about our salt river rafters ride the raft uh they got beat up this week kevin by the Peoria Havilinas. And when I say beat up, I mean beat up. I would say beat T.F. If you will, that's how I would say it on social media. They lost 9 to 1 on Tuesday and they lost 10 to 1 on Wednesday. That's a combined two-day loss of 19 to 2.
Starting point is 00:52:49 They currently sit at 8 and 10 for those of you that are true sickos and want to know what their record is. and for those of you that are next level sickos, they're in fourth place. And remember, none of this matters because in the Arizona Fall League, all of the teams make the playoffs. Wouldn't that be nice? I mean, it wouldn't feel like any kind of victory at all, but it would be nice just to be considered. No, Kevin's disagree. See, I have been a big proponent, Kevin, that I feel like two teams out of the six shouldn't make it. That's what I feel.
Starting point is 00:53:19 I feel like there needs to be consequences. Why are we playing all these Arizona Fall League games that they're not going to have any stakes. I need stakes on the line. If everybody makes the playoffs, there should be no playoffs. There is no playoffs. You should just do like an English Premier League system where whoever wins the league, that's like the champion and you celebrate the final game when they end the game, the whole thing. If you're going to have a playoff tournament or any sort of playoff anything, you need to eliminate teams before it starts. It's not where we're at.
Starting point is 00:53:47 That's not where we're at. But we are keeping an eye closely on some of the Diamondbacks pitching prospects, of course, in the Arizona Fall League as well as guys, like, you Kenny Castile and Yonsea Louise. But David Hagenman started last Friday. He got another start. This one was in an extra innings lost to those hated Scottsdale Scorpions. Boo! We hate you, Scottsdale, boo!
Starting point is 00:54:09 They lost that game, like I said, in extra innings. David Hageman started the game. He only lasted two-thirds of an innings pitched. Sometimes you can't explain Arizona Fall League at all. Usually it's maybe a pitch limit that he was set to. He did walk three batters, so that pitch count might have been driven up there in the first inning. He gave up one hit, one earn run, and struck out two. His ERA for the year currently sits at 4.26.
Starting point is 00:54:35 For those of you that might not know, David Hagamon was the third part of the Merrill Kelly trade with the Texas Rangers. They got Cole Drake, Mitch Bratt, and David Hagamon. All three guys we're going to be covering in our Diamond Mine series. We already have the Cold Drake video out there if you haven't had a chance to take a look at that. And we have the Mitch Brat one already in the can ready to go. So we should be posting that soon. Do not miss out on checking out those videos on those prospects. At least hopefully we can share a little quick bit of information about who they are and what makes them special.
Starting point is 00:55:09 But David Hagamon, again, he has shown that he has shown that he is a good pitcher so far here in the Arizona Fall League. The 4.26ERA, again, a bit deceptive just based on how short the outings are for these guys when they're out there. And that could definitely be the same about probably the most interesting watch in the NFL play for DBAX fans. And that is Drey Jameson. Drey Jameson, again, another guy that is, it could be a huge part of the Diamondbacks 2026 season. He has been trying to get some playing time with live at bats there in the Arizona Fall League. He went one and one third innings pitch, giving up one hit and one walk in that loss on Friday. And his ERA has kind of been all over the place.
Starting point is 00:55:55 He's lowered it down to 6.35. But again, it's Arizona Fall League play. You give up two runs in an outing, and suddenly your ERA is 24. So the ERA probably not a big deal. But what is a bigger deal is how fast Jay Jameson has been pitching. His pitch velocity is up. He's been hitting 99 miles per hour.
Starting point is 00:56:13 I think we have this tweet here from Jesse Borek, who was out there at that game. He said, full at bat between Jay Jameson and Johnny, from Formello. He Jameson topped out at 99.1 miles per hour during a scoreless frame, ending it by whiffing out one of the AFL's best hitters on a slider. And you love to see that because one of the biggest problems that the Diamondbacks are looking to fix is their bullpen next year. I think they have some dogs in there already. I think they have some understated dogs that are going to play a huge role in 2026. I think Brandon Garcia, again, another trade acquisition.
Starting point is 00:56:52 at the trade deadline, and I think also that Philip Abner both are going to contribute to this bullpen next year. But I think Dre Jameson, with what we're seeing out of him in the Arizona Fall League, is going to be potentially, once again, that X factor. I think I've said this about Dre before. I believe strongly in Dre. He's one of my favorite human beings in the Diamondbacks organization. And I think he is fearless. He is a man that pitches fearlessly. And that is something that I think the Diamondbacks need. I think that's something you could say. about those other two individuals as well in Abner and Egan, or Abner and Brandon Garcia as well.
Starting point is 00:57:29 But Steve Gilbert recently posted an article, an interview that he did with Dre Jameson on coming back from that Tommy John surgery and then dealing with what they thought might have been yet another Tommy John situation, but it was bones furs that he got, had to get fixed. Dre just missed a lot of time and he's trying to make up for it here
Starting point is 00:57:49 in the Arizona fall league. But again, as 2 BMC says, we're a Rafters family. Kevin, thoughts on pro wrestling before we get out of here? That it's always electric. It's always electric. Especially at Mullet.
