soak it in soak that terrible terrible loss music in welcome in to another edition of the phnx dbacks
podcast right here at circle k uh the provided studio k by our friends at circle k i don't i don't want
to even talk about this game this is probably one of the most depressing losses of the season uh
and of course it couldn't have happened at a worse time my name is derrick monti occasionally known as your
mayor, P.H.N.X. This is the people's champ
next to me. Damon Farrell,
aka Damon Dog. And of course, we will
be joined by Jesse Friedman here shortly
from Chase Field. We also got our
guy, Kev, on the ones and twos.
The Diamondbacks suffer
the first home shutout in
50 games,
and they get embarrassed by a score of
11 to nothing by the
San Francisco Giants.
Don't know really what more
to say here about this game. I know
we all kind of watched it. It was
terrible in every way aspect bullpen terrible starting pitching terrible offense terrible
defense terrible everything was terrible what the what what what was that that game was ass
I'm allowed to say that one you are allowed to ask game I want to start this off by saying
chat I'm so sorry that we are not allowed to use many curse words all of the curse words
use because Derek and I want to trust us.
That game was a bitch.
I'm allowed to say that one.
Right?
Yeah.
Like, okay.
Kevin's getting nervous over there.
Kevin got nervous for sure.
Yeah, I get it.
I might even throw a mother forker out there, but that one, those are okay, according to the
good place.
That's okay.
That is so dangerously close to the edge.
I know.
I know.
I might get, I might go over the edge here with this.
And honestly, I understand the way that Diamondbacks fans feel.
I am sorry if you were at Chase Field like myself witnessing this game in person.
First of all, I'd like to apologize to you.
That's really sad.
I mean, like, I don't even know where to start with this.
I think what I will start with is how is it that you're playing your worst baseball right now when it's the most important time?
How is that a thing?
Derek, I feel like we probably should have just gotten last year's postgame show from like this exact time.
Oh yeah.
And just put it on replay.
Yeah.
It would have been, it would have literally all been the exact thing.
I think I threw a chip.
Well, no, we said a lot of curse words last year that we're not allowed to say this year.
We might have to have Kevin go through and bleep all the bad words.
But other than that, the points that we are going to be getting across tonight are going to be very similar from this exact time last year.
Yeah, it is because it's a matter of effort.
it's a matter of showing up, right?
And I mean, the giants have nothing to show up for other than to do what they did
and embarrass the Diamondbacks and potentially end their season, right?
Like that's one thing that the Giants can get out of this.
You all, look, I'm petty, right?
There are times throughout my day that there are just little victories against people
that I deem opponents.
Maybe some of those people don't even know that they're the ops, but they are the ops to me,
right?
Like when I'm driving on the freeway and I just,
need to beat this guy because he was being a jerk a little while back or whatever the case may be.
Naturally.
The Giants know that like the Diamondbacks have big games here.
The Giants, you know, know that there are people like us talking about, oh, well, they have
some easy games on their schedule like the Rockies and the Giants.
Oh, no, there's our easy games and the Diamondbacks have lost a lot of those easy games.
I think that might be part of the problem.
I don't think it was a lack of taking these teams seriously.
I just think it's a matter of urgency, a sense of urgency.
Apparently, Tori, after tonight's game finally had one of those, you know, go in and scream
at the team kind of, you know, sessions.
And it's about time.
We're done.
You mean, to Thunderbolt's point, we're done handing out juice boxes.
Yeah, no, no more juice boxes.
We kick the juice box table over.
No more participation trophies.
I feel like Tori knows when to, when he needs to turn it around and start being the bad guy.
start being the bad cop and this is that exact time after after the game uh who who was it that
mentioned like you just wash it wash it away oh well they were saying that that's what he
is going to typically say yeah and i and i took issue with that because it's like no don't don't wash
it away wear that on your chest yes look in the mirror tonight when you go to bed and say wow we
really got embarrassed in like potentially the biggest game of the season wake up tomorrow and
look at your look at yourself in the mirror and realize you lost
11 to nothing while you are in the middle of a playoff race and that team that beat you
has nothing to play for at this point.
Nothing.
Yeah.
Five home runs tonight by the Giants.
Unbelievable.
How many times did I say when we were sitting there watching the game?
Why are they doing this to us?
I don't, because they hate us.
I don't know why they're doing this stuff.
They hate us.
Why?
Like, what did we do?
This is the best ball of the Giants have played all season.
Yeah.
Well, and I mean, okay.
It does a genuine fact.
And that's why baseball is so stupid, right?
is that you can play your best baseball of the season at times when it's completely meaningless.
And that is because you, you know, there's just, there's all these variables that go into
impacting you as a baseball player.
Right now the variables that are going into the Diamondbacks players that are causing
this offensive slump that they're currently going through is pressure.
It's the pressure.
The footsteps of the braves behind them, the footsteps that they are about to be the team
that's on the outside looking in and not the team that has that secured play.
off spot. We could talk about the offense, but what offense? What offense? I mean, Brandon,
five hits. Four of them were singles. Oh, my God. Fudge, man. Yeah, I mean, fudge. I don't think I
slipped on that. No, you didn't. Six hits total, actually, because they got one there late. But my God,
I mean, it's just an infuriating thing with this team. It really is. You got the, obviously,
the Ketel Marte double being the only extra base hit.
by the Diamondbacks in this one.
Meanwhile, the Giants are just sending Dinger after Dinger
off of Brandon Fought, off of the bullpen.
It didn't matter who was out there.
They at least only struck out four times tonight,
or I think maybe five times by the end.
But here's a fun fact.
Since going up by eight runs in the third inning
against the Brewers on Sunday,
the Diamondbacks have scored four runs in 24 innings of baseball.
It's good night, everybody.
I'm going to go ahead and leave on that.
Oh, Damon, you can do the show by yourself with Kevin.
I don't want to talk about this baseball team anymore.
They laid down and died.
They laid down and they died after that brewer's loss.
And like you said earlier, Derek, how, how are we talking about less than a week later
this now being the most embarrassing loss of the season after an eight run blown lead?
The biggest comeback allowed in franchise history.
Like three days ago, dude.
Yeah.
And now we got even more embarrassed.
How is that even possible?
It doesn't make any sense.
The bullpen honestly, like we could talk about all this stuff.
It really doesn't matter because really what it comes down to is Damon pointed out to me
three or four times towards the end of the game.
If the offense does nothing, then it doesn't matter if Brandon Fogg went out there and got
shelled like he did?
Or does it matter, is it more infuriating if the Diamondbacks allowed two runs and lost this
game two to nothing. With the offense being like this, the supposed best offense in all of MLB
performing like this, it doesn't matter how good or bad your pitching is. Zero runs scored.
You had four or five singles, one double, and that's your only extra base hit for the night.
It was an anemic performance by the Diamondbacks offense. They should be absolutely embarrassed
by what happened here tonight, especially considering that this is.
is such an important game, right?
Like, forget the fact that you lost.
Like, losses happen and everybody can understand the loss happening.
There was no fight in this team, especially once, you know, the pitching put them behind the way that they did.
No one deserves any other than maybe Corvin, right?
Like, I brought that up at one point.
He had a decent game, Rob DeHomer.
Everyone else was, like, horrific tonight.
And it's just, it was just a total collective effort.
Yeah, I mean, usually there's something you can point to or somebody or a couple of people, but it was the entire team tonight.
Yeah.
Ben's absolutely right.
Corbyn had an incredible robbery of a home run that felt at the time like it was very important.
It felt huge.
It was huge.
It was game changing.
Yeah.
It was one, it kept it one zero.
Season saving even.
Some people thought some people that tweet from our account thought that.
And then they were made to look like, idiot.
The next inning when the Giants proceeded to score six runs in the third inning.
One more in the fourth, two more in the fifth.
They just didn't stop hitting home runs.
It was terrible.
I want to read Chris C's super chat, but he has to change his.
You can't have the ESPO thing on there if you want to be on this show.
Sorry, them's the rules.
It's kind of at the point now, though, with ESPO as the GM, like he can't be the mayor.
No, you've got to have checks and balances.
That would be a complete, like that.
The power would go to his head.
He'd be the minister and the prime minister and the king.
Yeah.
You can't do that.
You can't have to be the king and the prime minister.
No.
That's crazy.
That was crazy.
But I guess, okay, somebody said crazy take and that was funny because it's not a crazy take.
But what it is is like, I guess you could say if there's a better performance from the starting pitching, if Brandon Fott doesn't, you know, have things turn out the way they do for him so quickly.
And honestly, as well as Blake Walston.
Doesn't have his outing go as bad as it went as quickly as it does.
Maybe the offense does have a little bit more life to them.
I don't know.
They really haven't shown it once again since the third inning of that game against the Brewers, right?
It was like that comeback ruined this team and it feels like it's having lasting ramifications.
It's tough, man.
It's tough.
I hate the chat right now.
Why?
Because they're talking about Utah taking the diamond backs.
Oh, yeah.
No, don't do that.
That's really bad vibes.
Don't do that.
I don't like those vibes.
Yeah, no.
That's not great.
That's not great.
They can't,
they can't do it again.
They can't keep getting away with it.
No, Utah can't keep getting away with this.
And the Diamondbacks can't keep getting away with expecting to back their way into the playoffs, right?
They can't expect for this to happen once again.
The Braves won tonight against the Mets.
We're going to go over all of this later once Jesse joins the show.
Poor Jesse is in the clubhouse.
Probably the saddest place on the planet right now.
But worst start of the season for Brandon Fott?
I mean, it has to be, right?
I didn't get a chance to actually look, yeah.
Off the back of the absolute best without a question.
It doesn't make any sense.
Yesterday I was sitting here.
Now I look like a fool.
And I was telling Jesse, oh, you've got to have Brandon Fott as your three starter.
I did say unless he gets shelled tomorrow.
Well, he got shelled.
So now it's back up in the air.
I don't know what to do anymore.
I kind of was thinking big game Brandon was just that guy.
And then he, like, Logan Webb performed admirably like insanely tonight.
He owns the Diamondbacks.
He always has.
Yes, sure.
But I would have loved to have seen, even if the Diamondbacks offense was going to be listless tonight,
at least a pitching performance that was competitive.
Yeah.
Because this is the type of pitcher we're going to be playing in the playoffs of a Logan Webb type of pitcher.
All these teams have top front of the line starters.
And like sometimes when they face these top.
guys, the lineup is just awful.
They go completely silent.
It doesn't make any sense.
I don't know if Tori is to blame or not for this kind of performance.
There's a lot of people obviously blaming Tori as they do every night after every win and sometimes or after every loss and sometimes actually after wins.
But I will say that, you know, when you look across the lineup, when you look up and down the starting lineup, when you see the bottom four guys all go 0 for 3,
Christian Walker, O for four tonight.
You just didn't get anything out of anywhere.
There wasn't really creativity.
There wasn't any attempt at run production.
And of course, it's another night where the Diamondbacks don't hit a home run
and they don't win a baseball game.
So it just doesn't feel like it's a sustainable offense when you need the power in order to generate offense,
despite the fact that you have some guys, as we saw all of last season,
and that are very capable of creating that chaos,
getting on base.
Even Corbyn today beat out, you know, a hit
that most likely would have been an out for most, you know, most batters,
but beats it out, makes Logan Webb make a mistake there,
gets on base.
I mean, Corbyn was probably the most dialed-in player
on the Diamondbacks tonight as far as both, I guess,
both sides of the ball, right?
And this is something I almost talked about on yesterday's show,
but like there's been people that have,
had a problem with how the dime backs feel so hit or miss with their offense, right?
It's home run or nothing.
It's feast or famine.
And I think that's fair based off of how this season has gone.
But what last year's team did is they generated runs.
Like they would it would be get a guy on, move a guy over, situational hitting.
And it feels like they've almost completely lost that entire aspect of what made them so good last year.
And that's, that's I think what's demoralizing is it's like these type of performances are more.
prevalent this season because there's a lot of just like times where they're just going to go up there and just strike out.
Yeah.
Or just not do anything if they're not hitting it over the fence.
And I mean, I might be wrong here.
Didn't the last time the Diamondbacks face Logan Webb was when he, they knocked him out in the first inning and then the bullpen completely dominated the Diamondbacks after that.
But they actually had like a game plan against him.
I believe that was his last night like where he only pitched one inning.
inning. They didn't seem to have any kind of game plan tonight. And that's the thing is,
is that you can't go in every single night expecting your offense to be dominant and to hit home
runs, especially after, you know, off of somebody that at least, you're right. It was against
Snow. Yeah. Not, not, um, Logan Webb averages like six and two. Yeah, he always beats the diamond backs.
Yeah. I've heard. Yeah. That's why I completely. No, it's insane. Yeah. No, I know. Right. Yeah. And I mean,
again, it's one of those situations where it feels like the.
Diamondbacks just didn't have any kind of surprise or game plan there, you know, when it,
when it comes to facing someone as dominant who has been as dominant against this franchise as,
as, you know, obviously Logan Webb has been.
This night has been a complete and utter joke.
The Padreys just won on a triple play.
We have the, we have the awful, awful, you know.
They won on a triple play?
Yeah.
We have the dis, the misfortune, Derek, of having to.
actually cheer for the Dodgers for a change.
And what do they do?
They lose.
Of course, they look awful.
And the Padres, yeah, they do poop the bed.
You've got to be careful.
And the Padres win on a triple play.
I mean, this is, it's unbelievable.
This night could not have gone worse.
This is the worst possible night.
Well, and you know the wild thing about it is I've seen that time.
I've seen it a bunch of times in the chat of people saying it's over.
their season is over.
I believe my tweet even was something similar.
Yet, guess what?
Their season actually isn't over.
No, it's not.
Right.
They don't, they don't.
It's not over.
They still have a chance here.
This game means nothing if they win tomorrow.
I mean,
like it still means something,
but I'm saying like the score today
doesn't affect the game tomorrow.
Yeah.
So if they come out and perform well,
I think we can get a lot of these people back
that are saying that they're out.
I really do.
I know you guys.
You guys are,
you guys are very,
feeble-minded just like myself because me and Derek were sitting there going it's so over it's so over tomorrow
if they win 10-0 it's back i'm sorry it's i'm sorry no see it's but that's the thing though a z sports girl
says it's literally over it's actually literally not it isn't uh we'll show you in all likelihood is is
semi-fair that's fair but also but saying it's technically it is over that's factually
technically it's not true because the divaaks are now 52.7% chance to make the play
according to fan graphs, which they yesterday, they were in the 70s and now the Braves are
up at 69.4%.
So, yeah, the Diamondbacks are fourth out of the four remaining teams to get a wild card,
but they still somehow have above 50% chance to make playoffs.
I don't, I don't know how.
Screenshot who's, go up there to who.
Yeah, he said, I'll donate 100 bucks to the Paul Seawall charity.
He's digging to the playoffs.
Yeah, screenshot that.
We're holding on to that one.
Think about how many games we'll come back around to that.
Oh.
Just when we didn't have to.
Don't do that.
Remember when.
Don't do that.
Don't do that.
There's already enough gasoline on the fire, pal.
We don't need to add anymore.
Bringing up Paul Seawalt blow and saves.
I mean, so many of these games, if the Diamondbacks don't make the playoffs,
we're going to look back on and go that one and that one and that one.
100%.
We'll have plenty of time.
That's how it works.
With no post season to do that, if that's the case.
Of course, we're not ready for that yet because the Diamondbacks still have a half a game lead despite the Braves winning.
And honestly, you know, they still have the fact that there's a lot of baseball to be played by those teams.
So we might not be the only one that blow it here.
And maybe the Mets will met.
Who knows what will happen?
Maybe the Mets will just completely met.
But, you know, that would go crazy.
That would go crazy.
But we don't know what's going to happen here.
And right now it definitely seems like the Diamondbacks are the ones who are going to end up on the outside.
outside looking in.
But that could all change with one baseball game.
Brandon Fott, he got pulled in the third inning after allowing six hits and four
runs.
His total line was garbage.
He went two and two thirds innings pitch, six hits allowed, five runs, four of them earned,
walked two, struck out four, gave up two home runs.
Blake Walston came in in relief of him.
He gave up a three-run home run.
He pitched two in a third innings, four hits allowed, five runs, three of them earned.
He struck out one.
and Blake Walsden gave up not one, not two, but three home runs.
I don't want to talk about these pitchers anymore.
Yeah, no, I mean, I don't want to talk about this game anymore.
We do, of course, have to give Kingsnake to somebody.
So let's do it.
Let's go ahead and give King Snake.
Oh, who is it tonight?
Who is it tonight?
It's nobody.
No one.
Nobody gets it.
11 to 0 and you expect someone, you have one of you expect to get a Kingsnake?
Are you kidding me?
absolutely not nobody
season on the line
blank space is what's there
you guys are performing like my fantasy football team
and it's pathetic
you haven't won a championship like I did
and I don't ever talk about on this show
my fantasy football championship
I'm very humble about that
but it's true you won?
I did I won last year
I got a ring I'm not sure
it's well I'll bring it into the show
so yeah it would be like
if the Diamondbacks won the World Series last year.
And then did this.
Actually, my team is much worse than that.
But yeah, it's similar.
That's fair.
The way this week is gone.
And was the Rockies.
Yeah, yeah, basically it was the Rockies.
It was the Marlins season.
Sure.
But man, this is, this one's a tough pill to swallow.
But of course, if the Diamondbacks can, and that's a beautiful thing about this for them,
they are still up.
They do still have that much of a lead.
And if they can, you know, if they can turn things around and win here, they can still get in.
And honestly, if they, if they don't, I mean, that's a tough Padres team that they have, you know, looming after this series.
We're at the point in the season where it's, screw the next series.
It's all about the next game.
Yeah, it has one game at a time.
This is the epitome of playoff baseball.
Lock in because every game is like the season's on the line at this point.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know, man.
But I will tell you, we thank you guys so much for being here.
And Transonic leaves us with a wonderful message here.
He says, relax.
We'll win tomorrow with Gallon versus whom.
Thursday day off.
We'll do wonders for this team who are grinding after the road trip.
Love it.
Thank you for that piece of calming news because the chat is very erratic tonight.
And understandably so.
And like who says, we suck after the off day.
And he's also right about that.
So now I'm back to just being anxiety riddled, of course.
One way or another, we'll be done.
with all of this drama here.
And I, once again, I am a messy bitch and I love drama.
But I will tell you that at least it'll all be done on Sunday.
That one just feels wrong, man.
It feels like you can't say it.
But I know you can.
But every time it comes out, it's like, oh.
Yeah, I know.
Oh, Derek's a bad word.
I know.
It's mother forking crazy, right?
But anyway, what do you got over there?
I was going to say, it's just crazy that, you know, Derek, I know you love wrestling like I do.
You can say that word on the USA network, but the WWW we can't.
Yeah.
So hopefully we don't have.
Correct.
One in that Raw situation where we just get kicked on.
I've had extensive meetings about this, about what I can and can't stay.
They wanted to make sure that they.
They sat Derek down individually.
They actually called a one-on-one meeting.
I thought it was excessive.
I don't look.
And they said these are the,
they had a whole chart laid out.
And they said, these are the words you specifically cannot say.
They had my stats for the last three years.
It was eye-opening.
Is this still written on your wrist?
No, no, I don't do that anymore.
I got it figured out.
It felt like an intervention, to be honest.
We do have some super chat, so let's get to those really quickly, of course.
Thank you guys all for being here in the PHNX-Fort's YouTube channel.
If you haven't subscribed to the channel yet, do so right now.

That way you don't miss whenever we go live.
And, of course, hit that like button.
We love it when you do.
It makes me feel better about myself.
Him, I don't know.
Like him, it's absorbed, but he's not feeling very good right now about anything to do with sports right now.
So, of course, also make sure if you are subscribed on the audio podcasting side, you leave us a review.
If you haven't subscribed yet, make sure to do so on your favorite audio podcasting app.
Let's get to these super chats here.
Chris C says, since the Diamondbacks don't want to try to talk about baseball, do you believe MHJ and Kyler will bounce back next Sunday?
I do.
It's a big game.
Cliff Kingsbury coming to town, Derek, revenge game.
You have to win that game.
You cannot lose that game.
So, yeah, I think Kyler comes out.
I think he pops off.
I think that includes Marvin fine in the end zone again for the third straight week in a row.
So why don't you take that one to the bank with our friends at Bet365?
Never ordinary.
Yeah, maybe for a couple more touchdowns there.
What else we got?
Benjamin Hunley, thank you for your super chat.
He says, Jock and Walker killed that first inning rally in a matter of five innings.
And I smelled what was coming after that.
Yeah, I mean, you had Jock hit into that double play.
and then it was just, yeah, here we go.
Not to mention the fact that, like, the vibes were good when Corbyn, you know,
brought that home run back, but it just, it immediately felt like it was one of those nights
where the Diamondbacks offense wasn't going to be able to get much going.
Of course, they can't score in the first inning.
They're probably not going to score at all ever during the game.
That's probably a fair assumption at this point, I think.
Mr. Bananas, aka Steve Banna, says, does it make us feel any better?
better that the twins and royals are also collapsing.
At least we didn't lose seven in a row.
I'm really trying to find a positive.
I have no idea what's going on in the American League
because I'm solely focused on the task at hand, to be honest.
For the super chat, I'm going to say that's a reach,
but I appreciate the reach.
And I, no, it does not make me feel better.
It just makes me feel like part of the loser club with those other things.
I don't care about how they feel.
I feel like a loser.
Yeah, exactly.
And that's what really hurts right now.
Uh, J Cash, thank you so much for your super chat.
He says, nice meeting you at the game, Derek.
It was great to meet you, my man.
Aaron Cox blamed you for the loss.
I blame Aaron.
Uh, and that's only because Aaron and I had a thing going on.
And then Aaron started going to Gerald's gym.
And then he started telling me how like, oh, now he's like gym buddies with Gerald.
And it's the same thing with you and Jesse and the Healer River resorts going off.
Like, oh, oh, you guys are just friends because of me.
Yeah.
And now you guys are like your own set of friends and you're calling each other on the weekend and not including me.
And that's Aaron and I hate him.
But I also love him.
All right.
Peace of Yoshi.
Thank you.
He says congratulations.
Gerald's cooler than Derek.
I get it.
I mean, I can't argue with that.
I have no.
Yeah, he is cooler than me.
Gerald's a really cool guy.
He's a cool guy.
I have no defense.
He's cooler than me too.
I just don't understand why I have to get attacked in assessing Gerald's coolness.
Peace of Yoshi again.
Thank you for your Super Chase.
He says, congratulations.
Ryan Nelson on the wild card game three starting job.
Yes, that's confirmed.
Chris C.
Again, I think Jesse tweeted it actually already.
I'll throw it out there.
It's speculation.
But I'm going to say that's the guy we're going with until he has a terrible outing.
And I probably shouldn't have said that.
That's your deal.
Probably.
Give me the snake to wrap around my head.
Chris C says fixed it.
I concede as an ESPO stand for now.
I don't know.
I still see that dumb.
Avatar there with his dumb face there at the bottom of it.
He's a crooked politician and shouldn't be trusted.
Espo.
He's dangerous.
He's dangerous.
He's not just radical.
He's dangerous.
That's what I've heard in the ads at least.
Be calm C clearly says depressed.
Can't even be my normal self.
Be better.
Oh.
We lost B.
Comcy clearly.
Yeah.
Be calm C clearly.
Didn't even talk about anybody's thick thighs or ample bosoms?
We didn't get.
We didn't get.
Oh, man.
When you lose B.
Comcy clearly, you know things.
are really dark, man.
Oh, man.
That wasn't at all sexual in nature.
No, and now I'm sad.
And, like, I'm crying.
Mr. Bananas, thank you for another super chat.
Steve says we need that BDE from Alex Thomas.
See, there you go.
That's what I was expecting from BCOMSley, clearly.
Thank you for picking up.
That energy.
Thank you, Mr. Bananas, for picking us up a little bit.
We needed that.
Couldn't have been better timing.
Yeah, oh, it's great timing.
Caleb Lindsay, thank you for your.
your super chat. He says it seems like we were doing a lot better with some of our key players on the
IL. Well, I think there is something to that. And that is that the guys were getting regular playing
time and everybody was in a rhythm, right? And that's what baseball is. Baseball is a game of being in a
rhythm. And the Diamondbacks have not been in a rhythm lately. And part of that is due to guys
going on the IL, coming back from the IL, just having, you know, just that inconsistency in the lineup.
But of course, we will get more from Jesse Friedman here shortly.
We do appreciate you guys for being here.
But we do have some more to talk about in regards to this game,
even though neither one of us wants to.
You guys don't want to.
Jesse definitely doesn't want to.
But we will talk some more about this game on the other side.
But first, got to tell you guys about Sanderson Ford.
Of course, we are proud to have Sanderson Ford as our official vehicle sponsor.
And you can, of course, check out their wonderful 65-acre
facility, which makes them the largest Ford dealership in the nation. They also have an amazing
customer service, a bunch of great people over there that will, of course, get you taking care of
and find you the vehicle that you're looking for. They thrive on a no hassle, no pressure,
and no nonsense sales approach. They are pushing for the playoffs right now, just like the Diamondbacks,
they might be doing a little bit better of a job at pushing for the playoffs than the Diamondbacks.
And, of course, you get the payoffs like deals on that 24 Ford Broncosport Big Ben that I got the
pleasure of taking out for a weekend, just ranked highest in its quality in its segment by J.D. Power.
You also can get 0% financing for 36 months with no payments for 90 days on Ford F-150,
escape, Edge, Explorer, and Expedition. So check out Sanderson Ford and their summer sales event,
which is here. And of course, they are teaming up with the boys of summer for a final playoff
payoff sale. Purchase, release, any new forwarding at four tickets for your family. To see the
D-backs push for the playoffs here, not a lot of games left to do that, but they are some very important
game. So you can also get 0% for 36 months OAC from Ford credit, C dealer for details.
And Sen.erson Ford also wanted to remind us to, you know, take this time to remember Al
McCoy as well. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I guess they did a lot of work with him and, and, uh,
he was the voice of so many of their commercials for years. For sure. Yeah, I mean, I know we're not
the Sun's podcast, but I think that Al McCoy goes beyond just being, you know, the voice of basketball.
he was the voice of valley sports absolutely you know i mean it's amazing that we got so much time
with with al but uh it will definitely miss him definitely miss him no doubt i mean just just a absolute
legend and uh yeah they honestly shout out sanderson for they hit us up and specifically we're like
yeah take less time to talk about us and more time to talk about al mccoy and i think that shows the
type of people that they are yeah there's some great people over there and we will miss al mccoy quite a bit
I know he's the voice of my childhood and a big reason why I'm sitting here right now today.
Absolutely.
We'll miss you out.
Also, of course, you guys have to check out Bed 365 if you haven't done so.

All right.
Well, of course, we got Jesse Friedman joining us here from Chase Field,
even though it probably feels like a little bit sadder of a location than us here in PHNXE.
Q. Let's bring Jesse in.
Jesse, this
was not a good game.
I don't think, like, there's no way for me to express enough how bad of a game this was.
But, I mean, between just everybody not really getting the job done for this team and the,
the timing of this loss, this is, you know, this kind of goes along with the last couple of
games where it feels like this is a pretty devastating portion of their season when they needed
to be playing their best baseball.
I mean, Corbyn Carroll robbed a home run, right?
That was cool.
It could have been, somehow it could have been worse, right?
The D-Vax lost this game 11 to nothing.
And if Corbyn doesn't make that play, theoretically, this is a 14-0 game.
So, yeah, I know I've developed a reputation around here for always bringing the positive vibes at the post-game show.
But, yeah, this was a, this is pretty turtle.
We just want you to have the right.
We just want you to be in the right state of mind.
You're such a monster, Jesse.
Yeah, you can't come in here and go all positive on a night like this.
Be sad with us when we're sad, damn it.
Be angry with us when we're angry.
Be happy when we're happy.
I'm tired of you going in the exact opposite emotion of us at every time.
Stop being such a contrarian.
Yeah, I mean, I guess I could be a little bit less contrarian here
and say that this is this was absolutely.
absolutely brutal for the debacks, right? I mean, today couldn't have gone worse. Like,
like, that's, that's just a fact. Today could not have really gone worse for the Arizona
Diamondbacks. I mean, the San Diego Padres just clinched a postseason spot on a triple play
at Dodgers Stadium. I mean, their vibes right now are as high as you could possibly imagine.
And as we discussed the other day, if the Padres go in there and play well against the Dodgers,
then you're looking at them coming here.
weekend with a lot to play for trying to win the NOS are the hottest team and all of baseball.
And then on top of that, the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets.
And, you know, it was a good thing on paper to have those two teams playing against each other.
But we've been pretty clear that the D-backs, for the D-backs, you wanted the Mets to just
absolutely beat the tar out of the Braves in that series and just bury them in the standings.
So they're the team that the Diamondbacks have had the bigger advantage on this whole time.
And that did not happen today either.
So the debacks are officially in a very precarious position as far as the standings are concerned.
I mean, I was talking with some people here in the press box about, you know,
our sense of maybe how this thing is going to end after these next four games.
And for me, this was the tipping point.
This was the day where I am no longer expecting the Diamondbacks to make the postseason,
frankly.
Not that I would be surprised if they did because they,
still have a shot, right? They still control their own destiny. If they rattle off four straight
wins, they're in no matter what anyone else does. But given how well the Padres are playing
right now, given how well the Braves are playing right now and the way that the pitching matchups
and the fact that they're playing a Royals team this weekend that has really struggled, just
everything, it feels like everything is kind of conspiring against the Diamondbacks right now.
And of course, it's not just, you know, the things and the teams and circumstances around them.
It's that they are playing pretty much the worst baseball we've seen at a really unfortunate time.
So, yeah, they've got a shot, you know.
I mean, there's a lot of teams around the league that would still like to be in the position that the diamondbacks are in right now.
But for me, this was, this was as bad of a day as it could have been for them.
They've lost Jesse.
Yeah.
That's a big day.
That's a big loss, a big loss.
It's not as big as B. Comcy clearly.
That is, it's not even close to as big as that.
Be Comcy, clearly, Jesse, couldn't even muster up an inappropriate super chat.
So, you know, things are bad when we're just sitting here talking about how bad things are instead of, you know, how thick booties are.
You know, that's really where we should be talking about.
It is.
After any baseball.
When they're playing good ball, that's what we do.
That's what we care about, right?
But of course, let's take a look at the count presented by Desert Financial Credit Union here.
The Diamondbacks lost this one, of course, 11 to 0.
They get out hit 14 to 6.
Runners in scoring position, Diamondbacks were 0 for 5.
Giants were 2 for 8.
Extra base hits, just gross.
Five of those for the Giants were home runs.
The Diamondbacks had one, Cattel Marte double.
Expected batting average there, 353 for the Giants.
They were mashing.
the ball all night long. It didn't matter who was in there for the Diamondbacks. It felt like
they were just hitting the ball very, very hard. The Diamondbacks expected batting average
2.11 in this game, which all of this just seems very right. Seems very appropriate.
They got the tar knocked out of them. That one's okay, right? That one's okay to say.
Yeah, I mean, this is obviously a poorly played game in all facets. I mean, I continue to have
a hard time really blaming the offense too much. I mean, obviously zero runs. It gives you zero
chance to win a baseball game. But the offense is so on the opposite end of the spectrum on that.
Like, the offense did nothing. So if the pitchers went out there and shoved, Jesse, what does
it matter if the offense does nothing? Yeah, like this. Yeah, but I, I mean, number one,
Logan Webb is on the mound. And Logan Webb is a really good pitcher. And the diamond backs have
frankly never really been able to hit Logan Webb. Uh, but number two, it really,
changes thing i mean as much as it might be hard to admit and and i imagine guys in the clubhouse
would not necessarily want to say it like this but i have to believe it is a hitter when you're down
seven to nothing and and it's the third inning that that changes things right i mean you've got an
all-star on the mound for the opposing team and you're in that deep of a hole the diamond backs just
didn't look that engaged to me frankly the rest of the way and i'm not saying that that's necessarily
acceptable, but it's also, I think, just kind of human nature maybe in a way. I mean,
the diamondbacks, once they fell down seven to nothing in this game, I mean, we've seen some
crazy things in the last few days. The Milwaukee Brewer has pulled off a pretty crazy thing the other
day against the diamondbacks. But with Logan Webb on the mound, I mean, this game just felt
completely unwinnable at that point. And yeah, it was an awful day for the offense. I'm not trying to,
you know, make excuses for them necessarily. But the diamondbacks pitching staff,
didn't really give the team a chance to win either, right?
I mean, this game felt like it was over within the first 45 minutes to an hour.
It was really brutal on that side.
It was tough, I think, after 7-0 where you're like, yeah, obviously not a good chance of winning.
I would never go as far to say that.
But if you're going to, if the brewers are going to do that to you on Sunday and then you
truly feel like you have no chance, are you a team that deserves to be in the playoffs?
because that just happened to you.
You should be up there in quality with those caliber of teams where you're still feeling
like at least you're a professional athlete feel like I have a shot.
You know, if the vibes are that low after 7-0 when three days ago, you just blew an eight-run lead.
I don't like to me, it's like that's the season.
Yeah.
No, I mean, I think it's just a matter of seeing some fight in them and there was no fight.
And you're probably right, Jesse.
I mean, when you go down by that much, it's hard.
It's human nature to just allow yourself to kind of check out and feel like, you know,
I mean, this was the same team at one point during the season.
They could not win games if they went down by two runs, right?
So this is, you know, a team that has experienced troubles, you know, coming back in games.
And this was a pretty big deficit, pretty much, you know, after the third inning.
It was hard to come back from that.
But we will talk more.
about this game here, including more from Jesse from the clubhouse. But first, got to tell you guys
about Zbiotics. Of course, if you haven't checked out Zbiotics yet, it is an incredible product
that allows you to potentially bounce back from a fun night that maybe was a little too fun, right?
Yeah. Or maybe your favorite baseball team lost 11-0 and you need to go close down a bar.
Yeah. Sometimes that happens, right? Sometimes some people might do things like that.
like two guys that are sitting in this room right now after they're done doing this podcast, right?
A great way for us to start our night, though, is with Zbiotics.
Because if you start your night with Zbiotics, you can make sure you have a great day the next day.
Of course, Zbiotics is a pre-alcohol, which is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic,
invented by Ph.D. scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
This has been something we've been trying to do for a long time.
When you drink, of course, alcohol gets converted to a toxic byproduct in the gut.
It's the byproduct, not dehydration, that makes you feel all terrible the next day.
So pre-alcohol produces an enzyme to break this byproduct down.
All you have to remember, like we're going to do, is to take your Zbiotics as your first drink of the night,
drink responsibly, and you'll feel your best the next day.
It doesn't matter if it's a vacation, wedding, birthday, whatever comes up unexpectedly.
There's so much going on, and you get the most out of all of your plans by stocking up on pre-alcohol.
Now, go to zbiotics.com slash ph.
X-Backs to get 15% off your first order when you use PH&X Bax at checkout.
Free alcohol is backed with 100% money-back guarantee.
So if you're unsatisfied for any reason, they'll refund your money.

Well, we don't know if the future is bright for the Arizona Diamondbacks any longer.
But forget that metaphor.
You still probably live here in Arizona and you still probably need yourself a good pair of
sunglasses and you can get those from our friends in Shady Ray's, an independent
sunglasses company that offers a world-class product that doesn't cost you nearly as much as

All right, Jesse.
Well, what do you got here from the post game show?
because I imagine, or I guess post-game press availability,
I imagine that nobody was too happy with tonight's performance.
Yeah, nobody was too happy at all, Derek,
and specifically manager Tori Lavella,
we'll get to more on what I'm kind of alluding to there in a moment.
But first, we'll just start with Tori's initial statement
on what happened here tonight.
All right.
Usually I try to filter things the right way,
come up with something that's going to sound a little bit positive,
but I don't think there was much positive that was positive
that was positive that came from this game today.
So I don't want to sit here and just hammer away at things
because you guys saw what I saw.
We got to play better baseball.
We got to play more focused baseball.
You know, it's all, it's all, it's all,
built off of pitching
and that gate makes the game
look crisp and gets the flow
and keeps everybody engaged
when you're tacking the zone.
I just think there was
bits and pieces of that today.
We've got to be better in that area. Brandon was
just grinding. He was probably
there's some 12 to 18 inch
misses and
this just was one of those days for him.
He was doing all he could. I think Corby made a great play
to keep us in the game. The second
that ball that he pulled back.
in the second that kept us in the game but it just it just got out of control so I you know
I'll let you guys ask questions I don't even I don't have a lot of want to talk about unless
you guys are curious about what I'm thinking or what the team's thinking we got a
flush this one we got we got four games left and we got we got something right
in front of us that's really really special but we can't get sidetracked by it
what we're trying to do we got to we got to focus on tomorrow and take care of
but this was certainly a frustrating day and I want these guys to feel it I want them want to
understand why it happened and then flush it and be ready to go tomorrow we were talking a bit
about the idea of flushing this one jesse and I don't I know Tori often says that I know that's kind
of part of the game of baseball it just feels like you almost don't want to flush this one you
kind of want to let this one sting a little bit and remember you know what happened today
maybe come out and play a little angry, a little aggressive tomorrow.
I don't know if that would help.
I don't know if that's a good thing.
I don't know if you just want to have a calm mind as a baseball player.
It just feels like I just want people to be as angry about it as I am right now.
Yeah, and on that note, Tori was later asked about the balance between, you know,
telling guys to just kind of flush it and move on versus reading guys the riot act
and kind of giving them a piece of his mind.
and Tori had a very interesting response to that question.
Here's what he had to say.
That's a good question.
I probably just did it.
So,
that's my answer.
You just read them to write it.
Maybe a little bit.
Maybe.
So,
anyways,
I don't have a lot more to say about it.
I'm kind of frustrated today.
So thanks,
yes.
Was that Barry?
it was i knew it that berry that stoundrel uh he he can always get a smile or a laugh out of
tory no matter how bad the situation is but i think that the key there is uh he looked he looked
he looked very he looked very angry and he looked like he meant it when he said that that he just
just did that you know that seemed like something that he probably doesn't really pull out of his
Arsenal often as a manager, but tonight seemed like it was the appropriate time.
Yeah, and on that note, we also talked with Corbyn Carol after the game, and he was, of course,
asked about what Tori said to the team and kind of how he's, you know, interpreting that message.
Here's what Corbyn had to say.
There's no two ways to look at it.
You know, we want to play postseason ball.
And in order to do that, we've got to take care of business over these next, you know, four games.
you know, got to leave it all out there.
And so that's what we plan to do.
Did you get a different side of Toria for this one?
A different side of them.
Yeah.
I mean...
We're not to be honest to see before.
Yeah, I mean, we just, we know he cares about us.
You know, we've got such a great staff, you know,
that take care of us in so many ways.
And so I think he was just reiterating the care that, you know,
we have for each other and that,
You know, just he's got confidence to us to get it done.
Looks like the look of a man that got yelled at by his father.
That's what that look was.
I mean, I just honestly like I would think read a little bit more into that kind of energy.
But I feel like Corvin's always kind of like that in his press conferences.
He's just a little bit awkward and kind of like even when he hits like he'll have like a two home run five RBI game and he'll be like, yeah, you know, just kind of, you know, the guys trust me.
and I love them.
So that's not like weird to see out of Corbyn.
If it was a different player, I might read more into it, to be honest.
Yeah, I think that's probably fair.
But yeah, it's clear that Tori definitely took a different tone with the team than maybe he normally would after this one.
So for people who were saying earlier, he looks too happy or, you know,
that we can't keep going with the just flush it and move on message.
It does seem like he had a pretty different message for his guys after this one.
And understandably so, right?
I mean, Diamondbacks have four games left, right?
If they win all four of those games, they're in the postseason.
If they fall anywhere short of that, then they, you know, three and one,
like you got a decent shot, two and two is not looking great.
So, yeah, it's going to be a dog fight for them here over these last few days.
And, yeah, it'll be very interesting to see how this team responds to all of that.
Well, we know that you could say what you want about the offense, the pitching, the bullpen.
It was all bad.
But we know that Brandon Fott didn't give this team much of a chance to win tonight.
He was not his best.
It was probably his worst outing of the season.
And it comes on the back of, you know, his best outing of the year, which just continues to confound me.
But what did Brandon Fought have to say, Jesse?
Yeah, we talked to Brandon about a few different.
different things. A video here of him talking specifically about his stuff today and how he actually
felt his stuff was really good. I mean, the V-load numbers, the movement numbers, all that stuff
looked really, really impressive today, about as good as we've seen it. And yet obviously, he just
made too many mistakes. Here's fought talking about that. Yeah, like I said, it felt great
physically. It felt like the ball was coming out. Pitches were moving. We just left some balls
middle and pay the price.
Sometimes when it feels the stuff's really good, does that make it a harder to command for you?
Sometimes. You'd like that not to be the case, but at the end of the day, we're talking
about inches on a plate, so you can feel your best and still leave the ball, kind of where
you don't want to, and, you know, it's just one of those days.
That's kind of the mood in here with four games left, is that?
You know, I think, I think we're just taking it game by game.
You know, we have four games left.
It's nothing new.
And we know the game that we can play.
And we play our best four games and we're in, you know, we just control what we can control and move on.
I have a problem with this, you know, playing the best game over their last four.
And I get it.
Like, they are still in control of their own.
destiny. If they went out, then they are in the playoffs, period. If they win three out of four,
there's a good chance that they are in the playoffs. If they win three out of four, but I would have
liked to see them maybe playing their best baseball a little bit before the last four games,
you know, like, I don't know. It just doesn't seem like this team has had much of a sense of
urgency. And I, you know, Jesse, I went back, looked it up since that third inning when they
scored seven runs and went up eight to nothing against the brewers they've scored four runs in their last
24 innings and that is uh not the best offense in baseball obviously no no it's not and yeah i i also looked
into that a little bit they have five extra base hits in that span that's 24 innings where they only
have five extra base hits of course none of those home runs the giants have just been hitting homers
and punches here over these last two days they have eight uh and it would be nine if if it would be nine if
if Corbyn Carroll had reached over and brought one back.
Yeah, I mean, they've been outscored 26 to 4 since the fourth inning of that Sunday game.
It's not that the Diamondbacks are just, you know, coming up a little bit short.
It's that they're coming up a lot short.
This team looks very different from what we've seen for most of the season.
And certainly what we saw for pretty much all of July and August where this Diamondbacks team really, really turned things around.
So, yeah, it's, it's, you know, one of those things.
And I guess also speaking on Corbyn specifically, he talked about just how big of a moment
this is for the Diamondbacks.
I mean, obviously this is, it doesn't get any bigger than this, right?
I mean, with four games remaining left in the season, and obviously the Diamondbacks have
to play their best baseball at this point.
So we'll see what happens here.
Well, we will have a bit more on this game.
and including an update on the wild card race here.
But first, I'm thirsty after this loss.

Damon, what time is it?
It's game time, Derek.
It's game time.
All right, Jesse.
Well, let's take a look at the wild card standings after tonight's loss.
I don't want to.
We have to.
We remove those other unnecessary teams off of here because they don't matter.
These are the teams that matter.
And like I said, literally they are not out of it yet.
I know it feels like they're out of it.
I know they might end up out of it right now.
They're not out of it.
They're still in it.
Diamondbacks still have a chance.
They still control their own destiny.
But they do have a tough test ahead, I guess you could say, or their final test of the season.
Can they avoid being swept here by the Giants?
And can they go up against the San Diego Padres who are playing some incredible baseball
against the best team in baseball right now and win two out of three?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Yeah, I will say that I think the standings are a little bit deceiving, frankly, because even though the Diamondbacks have a half game lead on the Atlanta Braves, the fact that the Braves own the tiebreaker there really means that the Diamondbacks have to outperform the Braves the rest of the way in order to actually get that spot.
So it feels right now, like technically they do have a better record than Atlanta right now.
but if the Diamondbacks go three and one and the Braves go four and one,
then that's not good enough.
The Braves would have the higher seat at that point.
However, however, however, if they do go four and one,
that would involve them beating the Mets potentially.
And then the Mets still have to play their way in as well
because their position right now isn't secure either.
If they get swept by the Braves,
the Mets could very well end up needing to do something in their final series
in order to find their way in.
I mean, none of these teams right now have a secure position.
Yeah, that's very true.
If the Diamondbacks go three and one and Atlanta does go four in one or even five and oh,
you're not beating the Braves at that point, but you still could beat the Mets potentially.
The Mets are a little bit further away.
The Mets right now, they would have to go two in three or worse.
If the D-backs go three and one, they would need the Mets to lose at least three out of their last five games,
assuming that the Braves went
when four and one or better.
So yeah, I mean,
I think you're in a good spot at three and one.
The odds are certainly in your favor there.
Two and two,
it's probably worse than a coin flip at that point.
The Diamondbacks really need to win tomorrow.
I mean, it feels like tomorrow is as close to a must-win game
as they have had all season, certainly.
It is not mathematically must-win,
but we are getting very close to that,
especially with a very good Padres team coming in over the weekend.
And, I mean, the pitching matchup is Mason Black against Zach Gown, right?
I mean, if there was a game that is set up for you to win where you have to take care of business,
debacks are going to do this thing.
It really does have to start tomorrow night.
You said they don't.
It's not a must win.
Elise said every game, once again, is a must win.
She said it tonight, Jesse.
And I mean, now she has a little bit more.
She has a little bit more of a point.
She says we have to win the rest of our games,
LOL.
Yeah,
you win,
Elise,
you win.
Actually,
we don't,
Elise.
We actually don't.
We could still get it
without winning the rest of our games.
You could,
but you also wouldn't have any control at that point,
right?
So if you do want to have control,
then you do have to win all of your remaining games.
With 10 games left,
that was an insane statement,
I will say.
But now you're winning and you can take your little victory lap while we're all sad crying over here at least.
But Jesse, I did want to get back to what you were saying, you need Zach Allen tomorrow.
And I was walking.
I went down at one point to go get myself a little snack.
And Owen, poor sweet Owen who didn't want to.
Sweet Owen.
Yeah, no, no one's ever said that before.
I mean, he was just walking next to me going, I know, I know, mate.
It's all good.
and the whole time I'm going,
you need Zach Gallen tomorrow because you do.
You do,
you need Zach Allen tomorrow.
But you have Owen consoling you.
I know.
I know.
But this is why Zach Gallen is your ace for games like tomorrow.
He needs to show up and prove why he's the ace of this team.
It hasn't been his best season.
That's okay.
He doesn't need to be Zach Allen's best season if he shows up tomorrow.
It erases the whole rest of the bad outings he's had.
he did this similar a similar performance last year when we absolutely needed it down the stretch i believe it was in rigley against the cubs
where he just was unbelievable when the debacks needed him most that's the zach gallon you need tomorrow
lots of swings and misses dominating performance carry this team to a victory zach gallon you are the ace of this team
if we're going to make playoffs we need you buddy yeah uh and ryan says i want the milkman man mania tweet i want to tweet out
the milkman man mannia tweet so so bad so much so bad um and i'm not lying about that and i never
lie this man never lies none of us ever lie we're all a bunch of truth tellers around here uh but you
know you still can't trust me like me saying that's a lie right so now i've just made myself a liar
but the numbers they never lie jesse what do you have tonight for tonight's number that doesn't
lie yeah tonight's number is 12 and 15 this is this is a rouse
record, and this is the Diamondbacks record going back to August 25th of this year.
August 25th was a little less than a month ago, right?
This was a particularly rosy day for the 2024 Diamondbacks.
They were 75 and 56.
They were 19 games over 500.
They had a seven-game cushion in the wild card race at that point in the season.
And the Diamondbacks have gone 12 and 15 since then.
And while 12 and 15 is obviously not good, I will also say that 12 and 15 is a pretty reasonably good record for a team that went from a seven game cushion in the playoff race to a half game cushion in the playoff race.
And that's a testament to how well all of these other teams have played, right?
And that exact same stretch since August at 25th, the Padres have gone 17 and 8.
the Atlanta brace have gone 16 and 11 and the New York Mets have gone 19 and 7.
And if you're wondering, how do you go from 19 over 500 and a seven game cushion and their
fan graphs playoff odds were 97% as of that day?
How do you go from there to where the debacks are right now?
It's three teams that you're in direct competition with that all got insanely hot,
especially the Mets and the Padres all at the same time.
And that is a part of this narrative.
as much as, you know, if the Diamondbacks wind up missing the playoffs,
it is the narrative is going to be that they collapsed.
And there will be some truth to that narrative.
But there will also be some truth to the narrative that the Mets and the Braves and the Padres
just played insanely well down the stretch.
And those teams deserve a lot of credit for the way that they've played as well.
Very comparable to that 2018 collapse, Jesse,
which a few people have brought up in the chat.
And I mean that, I think the difference there is what you just said.
It was the difference of the Diamondbacks just really performing poorly there down the stretch
versus in this case it being more about, you know, they went from being as hot as those other teams
to essentially playing below 500 baseball.
And that was enough for everybody to kind of catch up and surpass them in the case of the Mets.
Right.
So this is not a great position for the Diamondbacks to be in.
It's just still technically not over.
Tanner wants me to do a time of death thing.
They ain't dead yet, Tanner.
They ain't dead yet.
There's a big difference between all dead and mostly dead, right?
Yes.
The great Princess Pride.
And I'm not, to be fair, I'm not even sure the debacks are mostly dead yet.
I mean, they're like half dead, right?
They still, they've still got a legitimate shot here.
Jesse called a movie.
I did. Princess Friday. That's a got all right. I'm just going to gloss over that.
If we had confetti cannons in this office, I would run and grapple and pop it right now.
This is all Derek's ever dreamed of. This is all I've ever dreamed of. And you're not even in studio with me.
And it's come in our darkest moment. Save it. Yeah. Save it for when Archie's on the show.
It just, you know, every once in a while.
Every once in a while. This comes out of me uncontrollably. What can I say? I did want to touch quickly on on that 2018.
collapsed that a lot of people have referenced, not just today, but really throughout this
entire past month where things have kind of gone south here for the debacks. I think 2018 was
pretty different, honestly. That 2018 team, if you go just by the fan graphs playoff odds,
that team never even reached 70% chance to make the postseason. They had a high watermark
of 71 and 56. They were 15 games over 500 on August 22nd, so actually pretty similar
date to that August 25th that I just mentioned, which I believe was that this year's
Debacks.
That's what makes it so reminiscent.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's some similarities there for sure.
But if you look at the standings in 2018 on August 22nd, when the debacks were 15 over
500, Colorado Rockies were a game and a half behind them that day.
And the Dodgers were four and a half behind them.
It really is not comparable to this season or on August 25th, three days later in the calendar,
you had a seven-game cushion separating you and your closest threat in the postseason race.
So, yeah, 2018, I mean, that was brutal.
There's no getting around it.
The Diamondbacks were 15 over 500, and then suddenly they were just 500.
They really played terribly.
But another big part of that is that the Dodgers just absolutely took off.
It wasn't like the debacks, you know, peaked in late August and had a good chance in mid-September.
sort of choked at the end.
The debacks playoff odds were below 25% as of the first week of September.
Like that was just like a really quick.
The Dodgers went on an insane run.
The debacks sort of dropped off.
And by the first week of September, the team was already in really tough spot to make the
postseason.
Whereas this year's Diamondbacks, I mean, this is crazy to think about.
But three days ago, fan graphs gave the Diamondbacks a 93% chance to make the postseason.
And they had a three-game cushion.
in this race just three days ago after beating the Brewers on Saturday.
So if this collapse does actually come to pass here,
if the Diamondbacks wind up missing the playoffs,
there's no question for me.
It would far out outpace what happened in 2018.
Yikes.
That didn't make me feel any better.
No.
Well, how can they get it done?
What is their path at this point?
Who do we need to root against?
do we need to happen? How do we need to get involved here to make this? Yeah, I mean, we kind of
touched on it earlier, right? If the debacks go four and oh, they're in. If they go three and one,
then either they would need the Braves to go three and two or worse, or they would need the Mets to go
two and three or worse. So one of those two things seems like fairly realistic if the debacks go
three and one so you're in a pretty decent spot if if that you're not a guarantee but if the debacks go two
and two then you need either the braves to go two and three or worse or you need the metz to go one
and four or worse uh you need one of those teams to finish below 500 and if it's the it's not the braves
you need the met's to literally lose four out of their last five games so two and two is it is
obviously at this point just a that you're really banking
on other teams helping you out at that point.
So 3-1, you're still in a pretty good spot.
4-0, it's over.
The debacks are in the postseason.
As far as some of the other series around the league to be keeping an eye on,
obviously there's Mets Braves.
That's pretty clear.
But Dodgers Padres is also, I think, a big factor in this.
Padres winning today, as we said earlier,
is not really good news for the debacks.
It gives them more to play for this weekend.
However, if the Dodgers come back and win,
the next two games over San Diego.
I actually think that's the best case scenario for that series.
If the Dodgers take two out of three, then it makes it so that the Padres cannot
overtake Los Angeles in the NL West Race.
So the Padres would not be playing for a division title this weekend.
But it also is kind of a happy medium where the Dodgers don't bury the Padres so much
so that they're kind of fighting.
I mean, they've already clinched a spot, but that they're maybe jockeying for position
this weekend.
So I think the Dodgers taking two out of three there is the best case scenario.
But, you know, looking at the pitching matchups, like the Dodgers are just so decimated on that front at this point.
You've got Dylan Sees against Jack Flaherty tomorrow.
So that's probably the Dodgers best arm, but it's also the Padre's best arm.
And then you have you have Walker Bueller going against Joe Musgrove in the finale there.
And Walker struggled with the Dodgers.
Joe Musgrove has been really good lately.
for San Diego.
So the pitching matchups do not really favor the outcome that I'm talking about where the Dodgers
take two out of three.
But if you're a D-BACs fan, it is in your best interest to, as hard as it may be,
to root for that Dodgers team over these next days.
And what I can't fathom out of it is that how are we in a place where we need the Dodgers
to win and they're unlikely to do so?
I mean, that franchise, like, they, no one makes me.
more sick in the entire world.
They are, even when you want them
to win, you're like, oh my God, now they
suck, right? It feels like they
exist to just destroy
us in our lives. I hate
them so much. God,
please, Dodgers, I'm
just do something. Do
something positive for the first time ever.
Please. Peace of Yoshi,
thank you for your super chat.
Piece of Yoshi says if the Mets, Braves,
game, or games gets
rained out, there's a chance. It's
played on Monday after the Mets lock it up something else to panic about yeah there is a
hurricane that is entering into the Georgia area that is going to potentially cause one or more of
those games to get rained out would be horrible yeah that's not that I mean that would be the
saddest possible outcome us sitting there like doing like a watch along or something for for
for Braves Mets after this season just yeah oh yeah please know if they make their way in
Mr. Bananas.
The kind of interesting, just real quick, what would be fascinating about that is that
the Braves have made kind of an odd decision to have Chris Sale start on Wednesday.
I believe they could have pushed him up, but they're having him start on Wednesday,
which theoretically means that he can't pitch the rest of the season because there
just aren't enough rest days.
However, if that game somehow gets pushed to Monday, suddenly Chris Sale can pitch again.
And now if the debacks are, you know, if they're passing,
to the postseason is more through the Braves than the Mets at that point, which there's a decent
chance that it would be if this was still a race, then yeah, you probably wouldn't be too happy
to see Chris Sale suit up in that game. My understanding, though, is that hurricane situation
is more likely to have an impact with the Royal Series this weekend for the Braves, but I am no
weatherman, so I am sure that those things are subject to change. That's just what I saw when I did
some research on it earlier today the royals are actually i've been a rollous fan my whole life i don't
know if you knew that about i've never been a bigger royals fan than i than i am right now i might go
get myself a bobby wood junior jersey i already have six uh scurvy boy says in the chat
derrick loves that he gets to root for the dodgers guilt free yeah and that made me laugh so thank you
i needed a good laugh tonight i will also say that uh everyone should also be uh twins fans
Because if you're the debacks and you want to make sure that the Braves have a difficult matchup this weekend,
you want to make sure that the Minnesota Twins keep things interesting in that American League Wildcard race.
You want them to keep putting pressure on the Kansas City Royals.
So, yeah, that's awkward.
You got to be a twins fan.
You have to be a Dodgers fan.
You have to be, yeah, still a Mets fan.
at this point.
Yeah.
I don't want to root for the Mets.
I've always been a mayor McCheese guy.
Screw you, Grimmis.
All right.
Well, Jesse, I think we have one more super chat.
Steven wants to know, Jesse, what are the repercussions of such collapse in regards to this team?
Any idea what we would.
I mean, would this cause a seismic shift?
I know there's after it's a loss.
So there's a lot of Tory hate.
in the chat.
I'm sure a lot of people would like to see the Diamondbacks maybe go in a different, you know,
direction with managing.
Do you think that would be a possibility or not even close with the way that Tori and Mike Hazen
are working together?
Yeah, not even close.
I mean, the reality is that even if the Diamondbacks do miss the postseason and for as
brutal as that would be with the way that things would kind of end, the Diamondbacks are still
going to win at least 87 games this year because they're already.
at 87. And I think if you'd asked any of us, you know, before the season, if 87 is an acceptable
win total by the end of the year, I think we'd all say yes. I mean, this is not a Diamondbacks
team that really underperformed on the whole. I think if anything, the Diamondbacks would have
some serious questions to ask themselves on the pitching side of things. We've really been talking about
that a lot lately. I mean, this Diamondbacks team in the month of September came in today with a 5.61
team ERA, which is tied for the worst in baseball. You'll get those same numbers for the Padres,
the Mets, and the Braves. All three of those teams are in the top six. And it's just, it's really hard
to compete in a race like this when, you know, you have the best offense in baseball. It has had
a lot of good days this month, despite what's happened recently. But if you're allowing twice as
many runs as, you know, the teams you're competing with, it's going to be really hard to keep up.
And I'm sure that, you know, we're still, whenever the Diamondbacks are eventually eliminated, whether it's this weekend or it's, you know, after a deep postseason run, we're going to have a lot of things to talk about here on this show five days a week over the off season.
And I'm sure diving deep into the pitching and kind of what happened on that side, how you explain debacks having one of the worst pitching staffs in the league after the expectations that we all had going into the season.
And that would be one of the biggest, the biggest questions for sure.
We had conversations if the Diamondbacks had the best starting rotation in the National League.
Yeah, we did.
And I don't think it was a crazy thing for us to do based off of on paper.
I mean, they had five strong with a couple, with some depth in between.
But yeah, I think you're right, Jesse.
Like the questions would have to be asked on the pitching side of things.
Absolutely.
I mean, looking at runs against in the National League, your company is the Rockies and the Marlins.
and the Rockies are awful, but they also play at Coors Field and the Nationals.
So all the worst teams in the National League are the teams you're keeping company with.
That would need to change.
And like, I don't know what I wouldn't.
I'm not saying like Hazen out.
I trust Mike Hayeson.
I think he's a really good GM.
But something needs to be done about every time that this team spends a significant amount
of money on a player and it goes poorly.
I don't know what is to do with that.
I don't know why it keeps happening, but like,
Edward Rodriguez and Jordan Montgomery,
too much money is being invested into them for them to have been as
honestly detrimental to this team as they have been this season.
Yeah, that's totally fair.
And I mean,
I don't want to keep harping on Madison Bumgarner too,
but technically Mad Bum's contract went through 2024 as well.
Yeah.
And, you know, that's $23 million.
It might have been $14 million in his last season.
I'm not sure.
Yeah, I think you're right.
14 million is what he was technically owed this season.
I don't know when they actually paid him that money,
but that's what was going to be on the books when that deal was signed.
And then Erod's dollar figure this year is a little bit lower.
He's making 14.
Montgomery is making 25.
But yeah, I mean, that's three pitchers that you're paying $53 million to this season
that have given you next to nothing.
I mean, they've been combined well below replacement level.
Obviously, Bumgarner hasn't pitched at all.
and hasn't pitched for this team in, you know, more than a year and a half at this point, around a year and a half.
So.
So many times.
I don't really do this.
We need to kick Jesse off the show.
I can't.
This was already a bad enough night.
I didn't need to hear Madison Bum Gardner's name, not once, but twice out of your mouth.
Jesse, good night.
Go, go somewhere.
We're going to wrap this show up, but you got to go.
I need to, someone needs to, there need to be repercussions.
There needs to be consequences for people's actions.
and get Jesse out of here.
I want him out of them.
I don't want to look at him anymore.
Get him out of here.
I'm not even joking.
I don't want to hear his voice anymore.
Get him out of here.
It's like Randy in the booth tonight.
Get him out of there.
Everything's gone bad since he got in there.
Poor Jesse.
I know.
He probably had something really poignant to say.
He probably had something like extremely insightful.
Yeah.
Like then like everybody wanted to hear.
It was really going to cap off some really good points.
And I'm done.
I'm done with this.
