Well, we have some breaking news on the Arizona Diamondbacks naming a new third base coach,
despite the fact that we were told no changes were on the horizon for the coaching staff.
Jacob, aka Fodge, is going to join us.
We're going to talk about that.
And if we did maybe curse the sea snakes yesterday with all of our positive talk,
we're going to do all that in 30 seconds.
Don't you go anywhere?
Next skiback podcast live from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K.
It is I, your mayor of PHNX,
occasionally known as Derek Montaia.
I left my animal at home.
I left my other dog at home,
and I brought Damon Dog here today.
He is on the woods and twos back there behind the Mac.
I'm thrilled to have you guys here
for another edition of some baseball talk.
Of course, this show is brought to you by our friend,
Beth365 and GameTime.

$20 off. They're already low ticket prices by using our code of B.H. Happy Thursday to you all. Glad to
have you guys here. Like I said, we are going to be joined by the one, the only father overlord
Jacob. Jacob Franklin is going to join us to talk about this breaking news here that we have
heard that the Diamondbacks are hiring a new third base coach. I guess you can't really say new.
They're bringing back a familiar face in J.R. House. So that's exciting. And we're going to talk
about that with Jacob. But more importantly, we may or may not have cursed the Seattle Mariners
yesterday with all of our positive talk. I'm not sure if you know, but they are our adopted baseball
team. And we had Shane on yesterday. Shane was being what every Mariners fan, I think, is cautiously
optimistic, but also a little pessimistic still too as well, still not believing that their
team is on the precipice of making the first World Series in history. So we tried to talk about
We tried to, I guess, brush off some of Shane's anxiety that he had over yesterday's game as simply just excitement and not really never being here before.
Boy, were we wrong because the Toronto Blue Jays beat the brakes off the Mariners yesterday.
And quite frankly, Shane was very right to be nervous about the outcome of that game.
The Blue Jays put it to the M's winning by a score of 13 to 4.
George Kirby was more angry cheddar yesterday and not sharp cheddar on the mound for the Mariners.
He got rocked in the third inning, and of course that all started with an Ernie Clement leadoff double.
Damon, I know first that you, baseball is dead to you right now.
I know you're not in a position to even care, even about our beloved sea snakes,
but were you surprised seeing the final score here and what the Toronto Blue Jays did
to the Mariners in game three?
Not really. Not really.
I mean, I honestly, I kind of,
I feel like I kind of expected this one to not be a sweep.
You felt like something like this was inevitable
with how good this Blue Jays team has been,
especially offensively.
Yeah, for sure.
Me and Shane, actually,
I know that this might be doxing him a little bit,
but we were putting in parleyes
that this series would go over four and a half games,
which was being offered on a lot of books
as the like total number of games played.
So they were basically saying,
is it going to be a sweep or not?
And it never felt like it was going to be a sweep to me.
It always,
I mean,
it's hard to sweep a team in baseball in the ALCS.
So I thought it was going to be like close up a little bit.
This next game is going to be everything, right?
Because now it's either we're all tied up or you got a 3-1 lead.
I mean, game fours are typically, in my opinion,
the most pivotal matchup of.
pretty much every single seven game series across any sport.
Well, because if the, if the Blue Jays are able to win game four, then it's back to essentially
even.
Both teams are like home field advantages is reversed or gone at least for the moment.
And it doesn't really feel like, you know, aside from having game seven take place in
Seattle, it doesn't even feel like that's an advantage after what we saw yesterday.
But man, they can't be closer than 2.1, Derek.
I mean, someone has to be up to 1.
So if you're the Blue Jays.
I think you take solace in that and saying we could have been up to one.
They're up to one.
And we got to go tie this thing right now.
So, I mean, I think we got a series ahead of us personally.
I think we do.
And I think there's still something to be said about the fact that the Mariners never
stopped playing baseball.
And the Blue Jays did take a short hiatus.
Not very like not enough enough to consider it like what we do with the buy, you know,
by round there for the beginning of baseball.
And we wonder if those high-ranked teams get actually penalized.
or if it's bad for them to not play baseball for a week before they, you know, actually take on their next competitor.
This might have been a little bit of a similar situation where the Mariners just stayed on a roll and the Blue Jays had to stop.
And then now the Blue Jays are getting back on a roll.
In fact, I'm very fearful for game four, especially considering this end score here where the Blue Jays win 13 to 4.
And things really got out ahead of Kirby.
George Kirby did not have a good outing.
and it all started there in basically the third inning where he got rocked.
Ernie Clement hit a leadoff double in the inning.
That man is hitting 462 with a 1.118 OPS in the postseason.
It's amazing.
It's amazing who these guys are that step up and put up superhero numbers in the postseason.
I believe he is the Toronto Blue Jays eighth hitter in their starting lineup.
And then their ninth hit a home run there with that two run to home.
Homer off of
Ernie or excuse me
off of George Kirby
that tied the game of two
and then it was just
Kirby couldn't really
get things back on track
a single, a double
Vladdy doubled
you knew Vladdy wasn't
going to stay quiet for long
he's been heating up
he's starting to heat up now
Kirk walk
they loaded the bases
and then our former boy
Dalton Varsho
busted out a two run double
that put the Js up
by a score of five to two
actually a wild pitch
scored Luke's and then
Dalton Varsho put them up
five to two
but overall here
Yeah, it does really feel like momentum has swung the other way with especially how big of a win this was for the Blue Jays.
And you feel like, again, Mariners really, you almost feel like game four is a bit of a must win here for Seattle in order for them to like keep this from going all the way to seven years.
Right.
I mean, I think if you're a franchise like the Mariners, right, and you've had such a not to like, you know, punch down or.
No.
I mean, it's not.
We're out of the playoffs.
and they're still in it.
100%.
Like they're,
they're an organization
that is not used to
postseason success.
And like you said,
they've never been to a World Series.
So if I'm a Mariners fan
and this,
it goes from 2.0,
I'm on top of the world.
We're going to the World Series to,
oh my God,
this thing is all of a sudden tied.
Yeah, it's doomsday scenario.
The sky is falling.
100%.
The series is over,
even though it's 2.
Like, yeah, that's a disaster.
So I think, yeah,
the mental health of all of Mariners fans everywhere
is riding on the result of game four.
Well, Kirby went four innings.
Eight hits, eight earned runs, two walks, four strikeouts, three earn runs.
He also survived that inning, if you want to call it that,
but he did give up a solo home run to George Springer,
who hit his 22nd career postseason homer.
Just one of the most accomplished postseason baseball players in the history of mankind,
George Springer.
It is funny.
Like when it's always, it's always like people,
that are just consistently on playoff teams.
Yes, exactly.
It's not really, it doesn't really have anything to do with being the best.
His numbers yesterday, he's had like 72 career playoff games or 73.
It's like, how?
What?
That's insane to even think about.
But Michael Rokickey brings up a great point in the chat, Damon.
He says so far the road team has won every single one of these games in the LCS.
So let's hope that Milwaukee keeps that thing going in Los Angeles,
because that would be great.
The Brewers, of course, are down 2-0 to the Dodgers
and starting pitching, doing it for the Dodgers.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw that complete game three-hitter,
stifling Milwaukee's offense and just giving up the one home run.
The series now is in LA, giving the Dodgers home field advantage,
which doesn't feel great.
And again, the Dodgers rotation is electric right now.
Yamamoto, Glass Now, Snell, Otani.
I mean, it feels like anybody that they put in there is finding,
success and really they have to do everything they can to avoid their bullpen being out there.
That's the big thing. Milwaukee's bullpen holds up under pressure, but their depth will be tested
in this series for sure. And of course, that the Brewer's offense really needs to find a way
to put something together. I mean, I know that they have relied on the home run ball quite a bit,
but, you know, in that first game against the Cubs,
they were able to win that game handily without a home run.
So Christian Yelich, Jackson, Churio, and company,
they need to carry the load and figure this thing out.
You know, of course, right now the Dodgers are our favorites here in game three.
And, you know, again, we got the fact that, you know,
that they really, it really feels like that series is over
if the Brewers can't figure out a way to win tonight.
Oddly enough, I was surprised.
the Blue Jays and Mariners get the primetime slot here and the Dodgers and Brewers have to start at like 3 p.m. Pacific time. Don't hate that. Don't hate that. That ballpark is going to be empty at 3 p.m. Nobody from L.A. is going to show up except the outfield bleachers area. But Blue Jays and Mariners, of course. Those bleachers, man.
They're there. They're there early every day. Those people are animals, like in a good way. You know, they love their team. But the, the, the,
behind home plate, the upper deck, it's going to be, it's going to be brutal.
It's going to be just empty.
And I, and guess what, Dodgers Nation, I will be getting in on the jokes on Twitter,
even though I am a fan of a franchise that has a 48,000 seat capacity,
and we consistently sell out about 29,000 of those.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, you, as a Dodgers fan, you're in a great place to be attacked by people like Damon and I.
That's the reason why you should just.
just be, uh, thankful to, to be a team.
Honestly, that is a fact, Eric.
Like, like, look inward for a second and realize that you're being attacked because your team is
spending more money than everybody else.
You have all the best players.
Yeah.
You're having the most fun.
Yeah.
So it's like, we hate you for that.
We do hate you for that.
Not Maria.
No, it's cool.
Nobody hates Maria, but we, we, we hate some of you for that, for sure.
Uh, at least the ones that are answering with the worst kind of stuff.
Like, remember, you're a, you're a human being.
being on social media, by the way.
I know I told Damon not to bring his Twitter beefs into the show.
Here we go.
Now all of a sudden Derek got a Dodgers tweet that blows up
and now we're bringing social media beefs into the show.
I know I said that earlier,
but let's talk about social media for a moment, shall we?
Let's talk about how you people act online.
Like, come on, have some class for Christ's sake.
Anyway, no, but overall here, Dodgers, very worrisome.
And again, they've been kind of taxed.
They've kind of had to figure things out on the fly, and it's worked out for them well.
But if they somehow figure out a way to sweep the brewers,
I don't love the idea of the Dodgers having a layoff and waiting for the winner of the Blue Jays Mariners.
Because that series, I'm feeling, is going to still go to seven games.
But Lewis Castillo is expected to start in game four for the Seattle Mariners going to head-to-head
with former Arizona Diamondback Max Scher of the Toronto Blue Jays.
So it does feel like momentum shifted a bit in that game that Mariners have to figure out a way,
put up some big runs.
and turn this thing around.
And again, home field does matter.
Seattle is strong at T-Mobile Park.
So hopefully that will be something that they can rely on tonight
and get them through this.
Overall, that game four pivotal,
a win by Seattle just puts them one win away from the World Series.
A Toronto win just completely flips that series on its head.
So looking for some big swings in the offense,
the Blue Jays showed that they can go off last night.
it was one of those moments where you're like,
do you want to save some for the rest of the series maybe?
Or did they just get themselves in an absolute groove last night?
That might be unstoppable here the rest of the series.
So again, need the guys that didn't step up to get going.
Truroio, Yelich for the Brewers, Julio Rodriguez,
get these guys going.
These will not be low-scoring games, I have a feeling.
But again, that's the reason why the Dodgers,
getting the starting pitching that they have been getting has been incredible. So,
great to have you guys here. Thank you guys for being here. And we have so much more to talk about.
Like I said, Jacob is going to join us on the other side of this break. So we're going to take
a few minutes away. When we come back, we're going to talk all about the Diamondbacks hiring
a familiar face to coach third base over there in JR House. Don't you guys go anywhere?

Well, we have some news.
We have some breaking news.
fact and we have to bring in a diamondbacks expert jesse wasn't available uh jack summers wasn't
available um everybody wasn't so hey we called jacob no i'm just joking i guess i was looking forward
to have jacob on the show all week long and luckily we we exhausted some resources
alex jose jose jose jose jose jose jose i've got not returned my calls um but yes we do have
Jacob here. Jacob, thank you so much for joining
us, man. Appreciate you being here.
We were going to just talk Diamondbacks
Ball and what they needed to do this off season,
but they've already made a move,
bringing in a brand new third base
coach in J.R. House.
I know you were a huge fan
of Sean Larkin, just the biggest
Sean Larkin. Mark on the planet.
So I was curious how you feel
about this overall. No, I mean,
they did say they weren't going to make any moves
and now here they are shortly after
making a move for a new third base coach, but
it is somebody that's very familiar with the organization.
I mean, I think it makes a lot of sense, right?
Like one of the biggest issues this team had last year,
you would hope that they would go address that.
Obviously, things got a little bit better as they corrected at mid-season.
But, I mean, there's still a long way to go.
This team prides itself in the hazen air, at least.
It's pride itself on base running, fielding.
And what were they not good at last year?
A lot of that.
A lot of that.
Yeah.
So, I mean, he's a Hillsborough legend.
obviously coached out in the Northwest League and, you know, made his way to Visalia as well.
So, you know, I'm partial to the guy at that point, you know, now being our resident, Drew Jones friend and Hillsborough lover myself.
You know, I'm pretty partial to it.
It's not a surprise to me that they did this.
And I think it immediately makes his team better.
Jacob, you have a weird light shining on you from your blinds and it makes you look like.
like your face is a little bedjewed, and I like it.
I thought it was a new look for you, but I see now it's just light coming in from the blinds.
But what I will say, yeah, you're right.
I mean, J.R. House, he managed the Hillsborough Hopps to the Northwest League Championship back in 2014.
He spent 2015 and 2016 with the Veseli Rahide.
He was the California League manager of the year in 2015.
And then he actually served as the coordinator of instruction, third field coordinator of
instruction for the Diamondbacks back in 2018 before leaving us for the Cincinnati Red. So he was a
big part of this organization. Obviously, it was a big opportunity for him to go play to coach at third
base for a major league team. But bringing him back here to take on this role feels like the right
move. It feels like bringing back somebody who probably would have been in line at some point to
potentially be that third base coach for this organization instead of somewhere else. But it also is,
is like you said, an area that they have really needed to address overall.
It's just interesting because, you know, Tim Bogar, it feels maybe like he didn't want the position.
I'm just speculating here, but obviously Tim Bogar was hired last year to kind of come up in the interim.
We were told no changes are made.
And now here the Diamondbacks are making a coaching change over there.
Yeah, I mean, like I said, it feels like the right move.
I'm not going to pretend like I'm obviously the most ingrained
and third-based coaches that are available on the market.
I imagine it's hopefully there's not too many people
that are ingrained in that society.
I feel like you're pretty sick if you are.
I don't know, Derek, I'm looking at you.
That's a weird accusation, like as if I have an entire list
that I've compiled a potential third-based candidate.
I was really hoping they'd go after Tyler Bleday
of the, you know, twins organization.
He's in the AA right now.
Guys looked unbelievable for double A.
I don't know.
I feel like you're just mocking me now.
I mean, yeah,
that's one thing I do feel.
Well,
no,
I like coaches from,
you know,
Blake Lolly and other guys
that were in the organization
that have left for other teams.
I kind of hated that.
And I was,
you know,
especially when you see guys
that have this pedigree,
right?
Like leading the Hillsborough hops
to a championship,
uh,
becoming a coach of the year at,
at the next level.
Like that,
that shows progression.
It feels like there was,
Because, you know, again, he was working his way towards something.
I know baseball works out like this quite a bit where you do have to leave an organization
that kind of was grooming you to potentially be like a future major league coach
for another opportunity that when that comes up, you can't just stick around waiting
with your fingers crossed for the Diamondbacks to have an opening to promote you to.
But with the way that this business goes, that's going to most likely be the case if you're patient
enough to wait around.
In this case, it's just kind of great that they were able to bring them back.
Do you think that, again, I mean, it felt like Tim Bogart had a big impact on this team when that change was made there towards the end of the season.
So it feels like, you know, this coaching change there at third base can have a big impact specifically on this team because of their, you know, DNA and how they, I guess what they, what they were meant to be, but what they got away from in 2025.
Sure.
You know, and it's interesting because, I mean, in confidence, it feels like anything would have been better than what it was prior.
You know what I mean?
Like any sort of marginal improvement would have been better.
And that's clearly why they made the move.
Obviously, they were sacrificing too many runs by either being too conservative or too aggressive or whatever.
They felt like the main issue was there because unfortunately we saw a little bit of both, right?
There was no like consistent, like it was either guy was going to get gunned out or it, you know,
Like, it just didn't, there was no consistent problem.
It just was a problem.
Yeah.
And so it felt like anything would have been a marginal improvement.
But with coaches like this, to me, I mean, we're clearly not sitting here watching video of him at third base, like waiting on L.E. Daly Cruz to like, am I going to send him?
Am I going to send him?
Like, that's not how I'm evaluating this.
I'm evaluating it based off of the resume like you mentioned, right?
It's, there's coaching experience there, right?
It's a guy that's managed before in the past as well.
Like all of that being brought into a locker room is so important for a lot of these guys
because for better for worse, this team is still pretty young.
I mean, there's a character of guys that are still shapeable, moldable.
And so by bringing somebody in that's got, you know, so much pedigree,
and even if it's at low level of high A and, you know, single A, whatever you've got,
but like this is somebody that's experienced.
He's talked to kids before.
He's figured this thing out.
And so now you're going to bring another voice.
So not only what he can do for you at third base,
but you're going to bring in another voice that has experience working through development with guys.
And that's, Derek, you and I, thanks a briefly about that earlier this week.
Development is a sore, sore spot in this organization.
It's the exact thing that differentiates what the Diamondbacks are from other teams,
especially when you take a look at the Mariners and the Brewers and how many of their guys are homegrown and what they became.
None of these guys, with the exception of like a pulse skeins or something like that, go out there in minor league and post a 1.5 ERA and are just a stud from the day they hit low A till the day they're called up, right?
Like development is key in the minor league system.
And I feel like we joke about it.
We always kind of write it off.
But, you know, it's very hard to judge, especially in Amarillo and Reno, how the pitchers are doing.
when you know you're the ball flies the way it does and you also have to factor in part factors like that
as far as the you know your your young players development we joke about like a four era in reno basically being like you're untoucher you know
it's like a 1.8 era at a major league level right so or anywhere else but um you know at the same time it does feel
like the diamondbacks consistently are able to have positioned place
players come up. And they do have a great developmental system for their position players where these
guys, especially once they hit the major league level, not only like hit the ground kind of running
and find success fairly fast, but they get better at a major league level. Like we've seen so many of
these young guys do. Perdomo being the latest example of that, turning from what we all just found
to be a lovable, you know, kind of heart of the team kind of guy to literally being the best player
and the MVP of the Diamondbacks in 2025, right?
The development is there on this team,
but there are things missing and a big part of it,
I feel like has to do with the pitching development.
I do like J.R. House because of his involvement
with the minor league system and understanding that development.
I also like him very much because overall,
I feel like the Diamondbacks really took a chance
on someone like Sean Larkin who lacked the experience.
And experience is what a third base coach needs, right?
Like, I understand experience comes from other level,
and when you have a coach like Sean Larkin in your system that's good at, you know,
coaching defensively and doing other things, you want to give them an opportunity at third base
when something, when you have that opening after Parrish Chica leaves.
But it just also feels like, again, you want somebody with that experience.
Like it's, it's, and it wasn't there with Larkin.
It's kind of like the pitching coach situation where you go from one of the most experienced
pitching coaches in Major League history to somebody who's never,
done the job at a major league level, right?
Like I felt like one of the biggest impacts on this team in 2025
was that lack of experience from the coaching staff.
Yeah, I think it's safe to say that third base coaching is the ultimate kind of
ball-knower job, right?
Like, you just kind of have to know ball.
I'm not sure how much analytics you can use when you've got a guy coming at you at about
20 miles an hour trying to decide whether he's going to turn the corner and head home, right?
You don't have much time to be like, well, you know, the fielder's fielding it at a 45 degree angle and, you know, his top speed on his arms like 97 miles an hour.
So, like, there's only so much.
It's a lot of like.
Right.
You're doing that math in your head real fast.
You know, it's instinct.
It's gut reaction.
It's using your eye and your best judgment.
It's being there before.
You know what I mean?
Like it's being there before and knowing when, when is the time to apply the pressure to the defense to try to make them make a perfect throw in order to get your guy out?
and when not to test them because you're being stupid.
You're going to see Catelle Marte get thrown out by a mile at home plate, right?
Yeah, I mean, it's how hard was the ball hit and, you know, how close is the guy to the ball
and how good is his arm?
I mean, and like those are really the core factors that you need to know.
Where's it hit?
How hard is it hit?
And where's like, and then on top of that, it's just, okay, do I feel like he's there?
You know what I mean?
Like, do I have a good judge on this?
And so it's just such a ball noor position.
I mean, you just have to understand what you're visually taking in at the moment.
Well, when it comes to this, I don't, again, I don't want to speculate about the Tim Bogar thing.
I think it's interesting.
I'm sure we'll get some at least more official word once this move is official.
But it also feels like, again, maybe, just maybe Tim Bogar really was just an interim coach to help them out for last year,
but had no plans on sticking around long term and made that clear and kind of might have left the Diamondbacks in a position to need this.
need to do this. I don't think Tim Bogar did a bad job over there at third base and I felt like he was
the exact kind of experience that they need. Another thing I think though in regards to this move,
Jacob, is that 2026 is it. It's the end of the line. It's a it's a make or break season for the way
that this team is currently constructed with GM and coach. There's a good chance that Mike Hazen
after 10 years of being the GM of this team may not be the GM any longer.
If this team doesn't find a way to find success in 2026, same thing with Tori LaBalo, who's on the final year of his contract.
So bringing in a new coach or anything they do like this that might seem, even in the moment, kind of surprising, really just feels like they need to do everything they can to improve this team.
And bringing in someone like house is a move.
They feel like improves this team at third base.
Sure.
I mean, as you guys know, and as most people that watch this show know, I'm a pretty, like, I'm probably one of the more outspoken Tory and Hazen defenders that exist in this universe.
What?
That's impossible.
You don't even show up at Sunday night dinner with me and Damon at Tori's house.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
And like, I mean, it's just, you know, look, I get it.
We want to see results.
We want to see this team win.
want to see, you know, but I just have to sit here and I have to look at the body of work that
Mike Hazen has put together. And in terms of the longevity of competitiveness of this baseball team,
like how long this team has been competitive under him for the last three to four years,
they've been a relatively fun competitive team. When have we seen that before in DeBack's history,
other than 2001, 2002, 2000, you know, like early when they first started, it was there. They got
aggressive. They made some moves and it worked out.
But other than that, this team is very much like their playoff appearances were a flash
in the pan, right?
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
It's a flash in the pan.
2011, it's a flash in the pan.
Hazen and Tori get here in 2017.
They obviously retool and make a run at it because they had pieces to do that.
And, you know, they got to the playoffs.
They got embarrassed.
And then they did their business, right?
They went through the dirty work of how do we establish this organization as a team that is
going to consistently be there, right?
Like, it's not about, let's make the playoffs one time in 10 years.
It's about how do we make sure that this team is set up to be competitive?
And I say the word competitive because I'm going to define something a little bit here in a
second, right?
How do we make them competitive?
Now, you're talking about a team that won 89 games and missed the playoffs, right?
Competitive doesn't necessarily mean miss the playoffs.
You're going to have years where it's like any other year you may.
the playoffs with 89 wins and we're not even talking about how
yeah yeah you definitely know it was a failure and people love to point at it and say
they did this to this team they did and you mean it's like they they did what they
made the team make a world series and then win 89 games the next year yeah and then you know
trade everybody the deadline but still be two games out of a playoff spot with two games to
go this year like isn't this what everybody and I get it we want to win like I understand
to my core but it makes me angry
It changes because, again, you start to have winning seasons,
and that's not enough for the families.
You get used to the winning, or not the winning,
but you get used to a plus 500 season.
There were times in this team's history
where finishing the season over 500,
enough would have been plenty.
I know they didn't finish over 500 this year,
but they came damn close to it.
But over the way, they were competitive.
They were fun to watch.
They were in the race.
up until the very last week.
I know I've said this, but as someone that hosts a show about this team,
thank God for them being competitive until the final week of the year.
Because I don't know what we would have talked about.
I don't know how dreary this would have been week in and week out
if they would have just been miserably out of the race like they were to start the month of August, right?
But you're right.
And I mean, I think that there's some credit that is due there based on the fact that they did change that.
They did change the expectation level.
If we would be talking about a team that made the playoffs last year,
got bounced in the first round and made the playoffs this year and got bounced in the wildcard
round people would be mad about that right now they would be mad and they would say they would want to
change it mike hazen and troy lovallo because it's not working because we're not look at we made
the world series in 2023 but we can't get past the first round no matter what level of success you achieve
especially with the sports team if you're not getting better or rebuilding it then the fans
get sick of what they consider to be mediocrity very quickly, right?
And again, it's hard in this division.
You know, as Damon and I have been arguing with Dodgers fans on Twitter,
it's a difficult world that they put us in because their team has ruined baseball.
So at least the Diamondbacks have done a good job at hanging in there and doing their best to continue to adapt.
It's not the front office's fault or Mike Hazen's fault that Corbyn's got injured or Jordan Montgomery
was an absolute dumpster fire disaster as a picture for this organization.
They did their best to try to bring those guys in and try to help this organization get better one year after the World Series.
And the moves they made just didn't work out.
That's unfortunately the case in sports quite a bit, you know?
It's, I mean, in sports, unless you have guillions of dollars, like more often than not, you're going to come up short.
There's one team that gets to win every year, which means there's 29 teams that are sitting there arguing about why their general managers
worse than the next best guy and we're always going to have name.
But like, I'm not here to sit here and say that they don't have their faults.
Like, everybody's got faults, right?
But like at the same time, I also remember sitting through Dave Stewart.
That's what I remember.
That's that's like I covered this team during that time.
Those press conferences were tense and a lot.
And it was always excuses.
And I mean, I remember being in there with Kurt Gibson and getting yelled at as a member
the media for simply just existing, right? So, like, that's, that's something that is in our
past for sure, and things have changed quite a bit since those days, you know, but at the same time,
too, here we sit at a pivotal season where you can't even, you know, you've said your piece.
I agree with you, but it still doesn't change the fact that this very much feels like, you know,
this is it. Like, not to say they have to win it all, not to say if they don't win the World Series
in 2026 that, you know, that no, none of these guys are kind of.
coming back, but it definitely feels like if this team doesn't find a way to overcome the pretty
terrible situation they're in due to these injuries and stuff to start 2026, that there will
most likely be a change after 2026. I don't even know when baseball is going to occur after
2026, but there will be a change after this season. If this team can't find a way, I think,
to at least have a winning season and find a way to make the postseason. I don't think Tori shows up to
his postseason meeting with the team and says,
if you're not here to win,
then I'm going to sniff you out and send you home.
If he doesn't know that like,
this is it, right?
That's,
I mean,
that's definitely changed.
I've been saying that on the show.
Even when he was talking about the sense of urgency in April,
I was like,
I've been here, bro.
You have talked about not specifically having a sense of urgency in April
because the season's 162 games long.
I've heard those words come out of your mouth.
So you could tell there's been a philosophical change with Tori Lovolo because of this situation
and because of what, you know, 2026 is.
And I think he's at peace with it.
I think he was at peace with getting fired after this year.
But I think he's at peace with the idea that he can finish out his contract and leave with some dignity instead of being fired
if things don't work out at the end of the year.
But I think he also is ready to roll on this and try his best to make this, you know what I mean?
make 2026 everything they can.
It's not Tori's.
I mean, like, Tori is just the ultimate.
He's going to put his best foot forward.
Like, whether people agree with the decision being the best or not,
like, he's never going to go out there and not try and win baseball games.
I mean, like, you've seen it time and time again.
Like, he's really, I mean, whether people want to agree with this or not,
he's very, very good at taking what he's given to him and trying to make the most of it.
Yeah.
I will.
It's very true.
That might be what he said his best.
Right? I'm not a good chef when you give me fancy ingredients. I don't know what to do with sea bass and stuff like that. But damn it, if you give me a pack of craft macaroni and cheese and some hot dogs, I will blow your mind, Jacob. And that's because I do my best with like the given the little amount that you can give me. I will make a meal out of it. Right. So I've said Tori manages well from an underdog role. I feel like he manages from that role specifically well, which is why he's so good for.
this team. This team, I mean, when this team is built on young guys and prospects making that jump
to the majors, then it feels like Tori Lavallo, who manages those young guys so well is the
right man for this particular job. But, you know, again, it's also, I think things changed
drastically in 2023 when they found themselves in the championship, you know? And next year,
everybody's looking at them much differently and being like, so you're going to do it again,
You know, you got a young team.
Everybody's back.
There's no reason why you can't do it again.
It's like, yeah, there's lots of reasons.
It's called baseball.
And baseball is stupid, ridiculous.
They won more games than they did the year that they went to the World Series.
I know.
We'll never know what their postseason would have been like last year had they made the postseason, right?
Because they fell one game short and the Braves and Mets hugged each other.
I get it.
Yeah.
Like, I get it.
Like, it just, like, you can't let that collapse happen, right?
But at the same time, like, the Padres and the Mets were probably two of the hottest teams in baseball that year.
Like, there was nothing that, like, obviously we could win more baseball games, but, like, it just was a perfect storm where it was like, and not last two years ago when they won an 80.
Like, it just, I mean, we collapsed.
And unfortunately, there were three baseball teams that were about as white hot as white hot could be at the same time.
Yeah.
Like, I mean, I mean, it's still, it's still about the post.
season. It's still about what have you done for me lately? And now, you know, things have simmered to the
point where people are calling the 2023 run of Fluke Run and, oh, you know, this team had no
business being there. Yeah, they had no business being there. Maybe you was. We knew that at the time.
That's not new information to us, but quite frankly, neither did the Texas Rangers. Neither one of
us had any business being there in the World Series and somebody had to win that trophy. So just a shame
it wasn't us, you know? Yeah. If I can say one last thing, it just,
Like, I get Tories on the last year of his contract.
You know, whatever happens happens here.
Like, I mean, I get it.
Like, this team needs to move on.
But I would air caution on if, you know, anybody that's calling for Mike Hazen's job.
You know, I unfortunately think general managers, it's a, it's, that is a tricky, tricky
spot to be.
We almost lost into the Red Sox.
And it would have been the worst thing that ever happened to us had that happen.
I think that if people stick out.
the vision here that they will be I mean clearly they have a scouting team that's doing their job
there's talent in this organization all the way up and down that roster not even just in the big
leagues but all the way through the minors when this is the last time if ever that you saw the
diamondbacks minor league organization have just like guys that are almost household I mean
Drew Jones household name right whether or not he's been good I mean like Ryan Walt Schmidt
household name at this point.
Like it's just
the infusion of talent is there.
I just think if you give him
a chance to figure out the
correct development pieces to put
in place that we will see the
fruits of that labor a little bit more.
I just think that the people that are
hastily reacting to Madison, Bubgarner
and Jordan Montgomery don't understand
that the depth of that deal came actually
on the back of the owner and not
on the back or the general manager.
And so it's, I think people
or, you know, and he's made some mistakes,
but I think Mike Hazen does,
done a lot more good for this organization than the bad.
And it's just, it's, I mean, it's unfortunate that he catches that much flag.
I'm not going to make the vase metaphor anymore,
but yeah, he was handed a broken team and he fixed this team,
and they have been competitive and made it to the World Series because of him.
So he deserves all the credit as does Tory.
And again, if 2026 is the end of the line for them,
I wouldn't be surprised to see them move on and find success.
elsewhere and that's the other thing that could potentially hurt if you think seeing a player have success
elsewhere imagine how much it's going to hurt see my kazen go mastermind together another roster
and lead them to the world series or you know troy lovela be there on the bench for them but
uh jacob i appreciate you being on the bench for us i appreciate you always being here to manage us
thank you so much for your time and uh we'll talk baseball again soon yeah appreciate you guys
thanks for having me on take take care up there in the pacific northwest
I'm going to go give the new Hops Stadium.
Derek, if you guys can make it up this year, let's go to a game.
Yeah, I heard they're putting up the lights.
They were putting up the lights like yesterday, so that's exciting.
I'm down.
I am down.
I live in ticket packages, but they're like $9,000 and I don't have that.
So Hops are you listening.
I live 10 minutes from the stadium and I'd love some tickets.
I know some people.
I'll pull some strings for us.
We'll get in.
Don't worry, don't worry.
And also, it's going to be less of a disappointment than Warren Ballpark was.
They wouldn't let me in there, Jacob.
if they wouldn't let me go hit a ball in the ballpark and I was upset.
But that's crazy.
$9,000 season ticket prices for IA.
That is crazy.
That's like the most expensive one, but, you know.
Yeah.
Still, still, even right behind home plate, that's a lot.
But thank you again for your time, bud.
We appreciate you.
See you guys.
All right.

Well, of course, today is throwback Thursday, as it always is on the show.
We're going to, things are going to get dwindle down fast here.
There's a lot, there's plenty of stuff that happen on this day and on this week in history
during October.
But as we move into the end of the month or November or December, it's not going to
be such a robust segment. But on this exact day, on October 16th, 2016, Mike Hazen was named
Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Arizona Diamondback. So happy 9th anniversary
to Mike Hazen. His work is cut out for him in 26. It could be his finest season as a general
manager, quite frankly. And that definitely goes back to that 2017 season that Jameson. That
Jacob was suggesting.
I mean, Mike, it didn't take Mike very long
to turn this organization around
and have them playing the Colorado Rockies
in a wildcard game and advancing to take
on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.
We did get embarrassed.
He's right about that as well. But that doesn't matter
because what really matters is how quickly
Mike Hazen was able to take
this team from Tony Larusa,
from Dave Stewart, from that
regime that, you know,
kind of did,
made some bad moves. I mean, if you think some of
the moves this particular regime has been made, revisit the Yasmani-Thomas trade or maybe the
Yon-Lopez deal, that's for sure. But again, just very thankful, as Jacob said, to have Mike
Hazen as our executive vice president and general manager. Also on this day, back in 2023,
the Arizona Diamondbacks postseason home run streak ended at 17 consecutive postseason games on
October 16th with a home run. That dated back to the 2007 NLCS game three against the Rockies,
which marked the second longest home run shriek in Major League Baseball's postseason history
behind the Yankees who had 23 home runs from 2019 to 2022. So impressive stuff there from this team.
Also, it was back in postseason history on this week. On October 14th, 2001, the Diamondbacks defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals in game five of the NLDS to advance to the NLCS,
and then one year later on October 15th, 2002, the D-BACs fell by a score of six to three
to the Cardinals in game three of the NLDS to end their season.
That's not irony.
It's something else.
Poetic justice?
I don't know.
That seems bad, but don't love that.
2001, though, we did some magical stuff.
So glad we were able to get past the Cardinals.
because that was, I remember that NLDS and that was a tough series.
I remember being very happy they advanced and very much thinking that they weren't going to.
Also on this week in history on October 18th, 2012, a moment most of you will very much celebrate.
The Diamondbacks announced a new TV broadcast team featuring former D-Backs manager and Emmy Award winner Bob Brenley as the analyst and former ESPN baseball tonight.
and Sports Center host Steve Berth Ume for play-by-play duties.
The duo later was introduced at a news conference on November 5th,
but today was the day that they officially were announced as the new broadcast team.
And I know we give Bert a lot of flack on the show and as a fan base,
but I was very excited for Steve Berth Ume to join the Diamondbacks play-by-play staff.
I mean, I was thrilled.
I couldn't believe it.
I am a huge SportsCenter fan.
I have watched SportsCenter the majority of my life.
And again, this was a very, very big addition for me to the Diamondbacks broadcast team.
I love this.
I mean, Steve, I really much enjoyed Steve Berthume on SportsCenter.
I mean, he wasn't my favorite sports center host by any means.
That, of course, is this man.
Damon, I think we have the video?
Oh, no, that's all right.
We'll get that up, but yeah, I mean, overall here, it's just, it was a really cool moment for the Diamondbacks.
I think organization adds somebody like this from ESPN from Sports Center.
And, you know, I just, I think I kind of laugh now because it was an air drop to you.
It was definitely something that, I mean, now people don't really appreciate as much.
I think a lot of people have kind of grown tired of, you know, the broadcast team a little bit.
But I don't know.
I still think that they are hilarious.
I think they do a great job.
And yeah, I think, you know what?
I'll give Bert one thing is the fact that Berthume tends to get more excited at times for things that happen to the opposition than the Diamondbacks.
But again, that's also because this team at times will steal parts of your soul.
And again, I, you know, it is what it is, but I still think he does a great job.
And I think Bob Brenley especially did a great job.
His little, a couple of his moments this year were some of the best moments I feel in broadcasting history.
But again, as a sports center host, they pale in comparison to this man, who is obviously my favorite sports center host of all time.
I love Ernesto's comment here about how his favorite Steve moment was on Walker-Gonzalez-rated Dodger Stadium.
in 2024 because of course that was a game I was at in person.
Yeah.
So I didn't get to hear the good Steve performance.
Yeah, he was.
He was amazing.
He was amazing.
Yeah, for sure.
But again, Kenny Maine, my favorite sports center host of all time.
And that's because he loves me.
This is what Kenny Maine had to say about me.
Yeah, I'm here in my kitchen because everyone is talking about kitchen table issues.
And I'm giving all my delegates.
all my support to Derek.
He's never been convicted of 34 felonies.
He's never tried to overturn an election.
He doesn't cheat at golf.
That's my guy.
I'm going with him.
I'm Derek Montia, and I approve this message.
I won that election in a landslide, by the way.
Yeah, I don't even think it was really close.
No, it really wasn't.
Did you put, forgive me for not remembering.
Did you put your political opponents in jail afterwards?
Oh, no, no.
No, I should have, though.
I should have locked Espo.
Oh, Espo didn't get arrested.
Yeah.
I thought he did.
There were a lot of accusations made during that whole entire campaign, but water under the bridge now.
Water under the bridge, but that's all we got for throwback there.
Oh, wait, I didn't forget that on October 13, 2014, Chip Hale was named as the team's seventh manager.
So that would make Tori LaBalo number eight after he replaced Chip Hale.
And they've not had a ninth one yet.
But let's see what happens in 2026 because things for this team.
Definitely, definitely a lot on the line here next season.
But I did want to remind you guys if you haven't signed up for the Supporters Club yet, join us.
We have launched our supporters club.
It's a lot of fun.
You get some fun emojis.
They took the cactus light away, understandably.
We're not going to win a game for a little while.
But we'll maybe get a ski in the chat or two.
And those emojis that you guys can use as supporter club members are always revolving.
They're awesome.
You get badges that update over time based on how long you've been a member,
whether it's one month, two months, six months a year.
And of course, you can join right now to become one of our first members.
We really appreciate it.
It helps us out quite a bit around here,
and we love the fact that we were able to do this with YouTube.
This is a really fun way to not only give you guys access to some fun badges and emojis
that you can use, but we're also going to have some exclusive content.
I think the Cardinals guys already have a member's only video out up there for you guys to check out.
we will be bringing you stuff including dbacks after dark and some other members only content so again
we appreciate the people who support us and keep the lights on around here thank you so much
for those of you that all have already joined jason armstrong we appreciate you greatly boss
um but of course you know what we do around here where the postseason is whatever hiring new managers
for the main thing whatever we're here to talk arizona fall league baseball because we are
your fall guys so uh let's get an update from yesterday
Today's Fall League game.
The Diamondbacks, of course, beat their Fall League rivals yesterday.
That's right.
Their Fall League rivals, the Scottsdale Scorpions, by a score of 12 to 9.
It means everything.
It means, I mean, we hate, we hate the Scottsdale Scorpions more than we hate any team
that's ever existed in the history of the Arizona Falling.
It just makes me sick even thinking about that.
There are geographical rivals, and I can't stand them with their great stadium.
and they're amazing fans and how much fun they have out there.
Their games, for some reason, even during Arizona Fall League are packed,
just like a giant spring training game, they make me sick.
They make me sick, quite frankly.
Ernesto's absolutely right, by the way.
Cosmo should have his own light.
He means emoji, right?
Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, his own little...
I think that's what he means.
Yeah, Cosmo definitely needs it.
I'm envisioning a Cosmo light, and I don't really know what that looks like.
It's electric.
A Cosmo emoji in the chat would be pretty fire.
They also beat their rival Scorpions with a really fun
ninth inning, Grand Slam kind of situation.
They were the away team, so they hit in the top of the inning,
so it wasn't exactly a walkoff, but it would have been.
They beat them by a score of 12 to 9 to improve to 3 in 3.
That's right.
They are back to 500.
Ride the raft.
Dramatic 4-run, ninth inning to take the lead and win the game.
Yonsea Louise, unfortunately, the Arizona Diamondbacks prospect,
he was 0 for 4 in the game.
But who wasn't was the Rockies number two overall prospect, Charlie Condon.
This man had himself a day.
He went three for five with five RBI.
He was just a double short of the cycle, a single, a triple, and a home run.
And that home run was huge.
It meant everything to us.
It was a grand slam in the ninth inning.
The rafters were down at the time.
by a score of, I believe it was 8, 9 to 8,
and he hit a Grand Slam,
essentially walk off Grand Slam,
to win the game for the Rafters and improved a three and three.
So very exciting.
And again, just another reason why you need to come out
and check out these games.
They are broadcast, by the way.
There is video of a lot of these games available.
So make sure to check out the Arizona Folley website
because they are, it's not the highest quality of broadcast,
but you're still going to be able to watch what happens in the game.
So if you are a real sicko for baseball like we are,
make sure to check that out.
More importantly, call into work on one of these beautiful,
it's not fall yet, but it's supposed to be fall, right?
It is fall.
It's fall, fall days, and have yourself taking some baseball because it's a great time.
David Hagamon will be pitching this Friday for the rafters,
and again, he was excellent.
His last time out in the pouring rain,
hopefully the weather will be much better for Friday's game,
but he is definitely somebody worth coming out to check out
because he is, again, part of that three-player trade
for Merrill Kelly that is starting to look very, very good
for the Diamondbacks is Cole Drake and David Hagamon
kind of come around here and look pretty good.
So Jason Armstrong says it's 77 in Goodyear.
You got to love it.
You got to love it.
It's fall.
This is fall.
This is what we've been waiting for, folks.
H hoodie weather.
I got my Bisbee Mining hood.
on. I got my Corby and Carroll
Rookie of the Year shirt ready to
inspire or maybe
turn some things around and get some luck going for this team
but overall again the Fall League
I can't express enough how much fun it is to come out
and watch a lot of these young guys. I know this is
stupid but one of my favorite things about the Fall League truly
is the fact that the players
get to wear their own jerseys
for their team. I feel like
not only is that cool but it's very helpful
to me who would be
struggling to figure out who was who
based on them if they all wore matching uniforms.
Another thing I want to just beef about before we get out of here
is the built-for-fall wear that all of the major league baseball teams
that are in the postseason wear,
do we really have to give all the teams the same like battle cry?
I think I brought this up before,
but it still makes me sick seeing two teams face off each other
essentially wearing the same hoodie with the same words across the front
just in their own team logo.
It's really dumb and I hate it.
But that's just a small old man gripe for me.
But thank you guys so much, of course, for joining us.
We're going to get out of here.
We will be back tomorrow with another 12 p.m. show.
So make sure to join us for that tomorrow.
We are going to discuss some of these trade rumors.
Our guys over at Snake's territory brought up some trades for Cotel Marte.
We are going to discuss if trading Cotel Marte makes any sense for this team.
And Damon is going to scream for 20 solid minutes about why.
It doesn't. I know he is. But of course, until then.
It just doesn't.
He's already started. That's a preview of what you're going to get tomorrow.
But we appreciate you guys all for being here. Thank you, R.A., thank you, Jason. Thank you, Deborah.
You guys are the best. We appreciate, of course, you guys for being part of the supporters group as well.
We will be back tomorrow, like I said, at 12 p.m. until then, we're going to go watch some baseball.
We got Dodgers versus Brewers. Hopefully the Brewers can keep the road team thing going and turn things around.
And hopefully the Mariners can stop.
that road team thing and go up 3-1.
So we're going to be rooting on our C-backs and the Brewers.
Of course, I hope you guys enjoy baseball and have yourselves a wonderful afternoon.
You follow us on Twitter.
I'm at Kapp underscore K-Man with a K.

Thank you guys all for your time today.
We appreciate you.
We'll see you tomorrow.
Until then, have a wonderful evening and remember kids.
Baseball is fun, but it is so much more fun when you know that 2026 is a make-it-or-break-it season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
