Starting point is 00:00:02 Emergency Podcast alert. Let's go, baby. Arizona Diamondbacks got themselves a closer. We didn't know this would have the dispatch. Who would have to wrap the podcast that soon? This was going to have the disbass. Welcome into an emergency podcast. My name is, uh, whatever.
Starting point is 00:00:29 It doesn't matter what my name is. Who gives a shit? It's not Paul C-W. what his name is. Neither one of us matter. I'm Derek. This is Sean. Jesse's in San Francisco. And Paul Seawald is an Arizona Diamondback. Right after we wrap the show, we got breaking news from Nick Bacoro from A.Z. Central, who said that the Arizona Diamondbacks were close to move to trade for Paul Seawald closer from the Seattle Mariners. We'll talk about the trade package. We'll talk about everything here right now. But first, let's take a look at the newest Arizona. Arizona Diamondback, which I'm being informed by my friends in Seattle, they're not happy about losing over there, not one bit, because Paul Seawald was a lockdown closer. We talk about blowing out the lights. We talk about shutting things down when Scott McGuff comes in. Here's the new
Starting point is 00:01:16 sexiest man in Arizona. Paul Seawald, 2.93 ERA, 1.02 whip, 12.56 strikeouts per nine average and he has saved 21 out of 24 games he's been given the opportunity look at that look at that resident mariners fan chain in the chat saying have fun with them he is elite have fun with uh josh rojas don't you do that bomb can zone don't don't i'm sad i am sad about josh rojas specifically let's talk about the trade package so the errors yeah there's own diamondbacks have traded uh let's take a look at the trade they've traded josh rojas uh they have traded ryan and Dominic Canzon, the Seattle Mariners for Paul Seawald. And honestly, I'm not super broken up about this.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Let's go one guy at a time, right? We know Dominic Canzone has been a fun story, and we've kind of seen him get some big hits for this team, right? Definitely sucks to lose someone like Dom, but we know the Diamondbacks definitely have a stacked outfield. We know that there is no concern about the depth that they have in the outfield, especially when it comes to young guys like Canzone, right? Josh Rojas, a sentimental issue here.
Starting point is 00:02:30 I put on for my city. Oh, man. I mean, we love Josh Rojas. The West Side home. It's so hard. It's so hard to lose him. But I personally, if you're talking about if I think that that package is too much for the Diamondback's situation that they're in and for the years of control Paul Seawald has left on his contract, no, I do not believe that. But I will say that Ryan Bliss is a very, very good.
Starting point is 00:02:56 young infielder and I am, if anything, most concerned about him being included in that trade. And I'm guessing that's who Shane is talking about when he says, no. Thanks for the Roy in 2020. No, I think he's, oh, maybe 2024. I thought he was talking about 2023 rookie of the year, Dominic Canzon. Yeah. That's tough loss. No, I mean, like, respectfully, H-Fucking K.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Like, this is a business. And I, you see, like, you know, I'm not going to, I don't want to glombo. off over the fact that like trades completely uproot guys lives and stuff like that but that's not what we're here to talk about we're here to talk about baseball and how this affects baseball and respectfully h k none of these guys were really playing any like it became clear that the down back window was right now and none of these guys were really going to play a massive role in them achieving their goal of winning a world series yeah um and that's all i care about and even if they don't win a world series i don't really think like Josh Rojas has been here for a little bit. We know who he is and it's not like
Starting point is 00:03:59 respectfully it's just not that great of a baseball player. And obviously there was still, you know, the jury was still out on on Kenzone and obviously bliss. But like I it sucks because like these seem like guys that you like in the organization. But the reality is I don't like I don't think that if you want to look at this over like the perspective of 10, 15 years, I don't think that those three guys being a part of this organization, give this organization any better chance of having a World Series than Paul Seawald does. So respectfully, I don't care. And Mays Devil 18 says it all.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Seawald's savant page made my dick Mountain. Can we take a look at that baseball same page? Oh, woo, woo, whoa. Look at all that bright red baby. Oh my God. Look at it. Oh my God. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Like, let's just like, sometimes we're supposed to. talk over the graphic and give you analysis. I think we should just look at this like a beautiful sunset and just appreciate that K percentage, that XBA, the average exit velo, all of that that has going on. I mean, barrel percentage, with percent, you're not going to find a pitcher right now within the Arizona Diamondbacks organization whose baseball Savant page looks anything like this. Am I right?
Starting point is 00:05:18 Oh, no. Yeah, I mean, that's a lot of, it's a lot of red, a lot of really bright, bright red i mean that's just numbers don't lie man and that's a lot of really numbers that suggest that he's a very very very good pitcher and a pitcher mind you that has control for another year so we got talking about what we talked about a lot during today's actual show no rental like we were avoiding rentals why hayes and wasn't going after some of these guys that you saw that would talk about a lot all of that stuff like this is why you emphasize control and obviously it's only another year of control but we talk about this window maybe not being this year but
Starting point is 00:05:52 being next year too this guy makes you significantly better this year and gives you a really really good chance of being a a really good team next year uh when some of these guys are more developed you have an off season you're in and you're you're you know you still have that gallon all of that stuff um just thumbs up just thumbs up mike we're happy with this one thumbs up most importantly it addresses the diamond back's biggest need we've seen how this entire situation uh with the bullpen has gone and according to bob nightingale they're not done yet So it seems like the Arizona Diamondbacks are still in the market for potentially being. Oh, he's talking about Dom Canzon.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Shane's drunk. No, no, no, no. Dom Canzone. I'd be calling Dom Canzone rookie to year forever. You're both drunk. What do you mean? He has big hits. I want to take a step back, though, because of what I am Larry said.
Starting point is 00:06:42 And he's right. Dominic Canzone is the 19th ranked player in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system. And Ryan Bliss is the 29th ranked player. So it's not like they gave up what we've seen some of these other teams give up as far as a top five prospect. Exactly. And that's why, okay, first off, I was about to ask Marcos. I was looking for the compliment. There you are. Yeah, we were. I appreciate that. Many were. And also, like, so I saw at least one person in the chat being like, where is Bednar? Bednar is costing you way more, I think. He has more control. And this is, in my mind, is these are no guys.
Starting point is 00:07:20 None of the guys in this trade, with the exception of maybe Bliss a little bit, but even then, not really. I don't, like, I don't care all that much. None of these guys are guys where I'm like, oh, boy, that one might come to bite us in the ass. Like, it's not like trading away your top pitching prospect in Brandon Faw. Or obviously trading away a guy like Drew Jones or Loller or something like that. Like, these are all guys that I think this organization is going to be able to live with in the long run getting rid of. And I don't think that would have necessarily been the case in a Bednar trade. But regardless, this is just a, this is a really good closer.
Starting point is 00:07:55 It's a really good closer. It makes a lot of sense. Josh Rojas was really one of the only productive parts of the Granky trade. So if you want to go back and revisit things that are negative, we can talk about that. But we'll do that a different day. We don't need to do about that. Now, Josh Ross, like you said, hasn't been great. You can even argue he hasn't been very good this season.
Starting point is 00:08:11 I'm sure Josh would even say that himself. I will also say that when it comes to all three of these guys, the difference here is consistency. None of them have really been able to put together consistently. And I think that's the difference between a good and a great baseball player. It's not to say that they might not get there or get to that point. But right now, as it stands, they got themselves a pretty goddamn great closer in Paul Seawald. And hopefully for the first time, maybe in Arizona Diamondbacks history, we have a closer.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Also, we just kick this idea around just for fun. But what if they do still go out and get David Bednar? What is how to say about the bullpen? Well, that's another side of this. I mean, that's partially a joke, but also, like, they did not really dip. I mean, Bliss is the big one, I would say, but they didn't really dip too big into that group of prospects that were in a lot of these trade conversations that we've been having. So the, the, I guess, resources are still there for this team to still make more moves. And I mean, like, I think Thunderbolt said it and Cogs is getting added too.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Like, they didn't really dip into that no flies up. at all yeah yeah there's still 24 hours left until this trade deadline I'm not getting too attached to any one person still on this roster yet because they like I said they still have plenty of resources to make more moves he fucking told me that he like he'd trade me like he was like in a heartbeat he's like for a fucking solid bullpen arm you're gone so I get it and I'm fine with it because it's a business but yeah we have and oh also there's the Kyle Lewis conversation we were having earlier as it's true who they call up yeah this is this is
Starting point is 00:09:44 this is exactly why you have a guy like can zone in the MLB roster Yeah. Well, we have that tweet, by the way, from Bob Nightingale, which hopefully he's right. Hopefully this is only the beginning. He said the Arizona Diamondbacks still are hoping to acquire another reliever as well as a starting pitcher before the trade deadline 24 hours from now. Shit's happening, folks. No, Mike Hayzen did not take the weekend off. No, he didn't sleep in today. All of you apologize. Apologize, you hypocrites. The haters are sick. But again, I think here's the thing is like the Diamondbacks would need a number of moves, right? Like this can't be. the only move if we want to really significantly talk about this team being a contender. But, I mean, honestly, if they make another move, even if it's not for another reliever, I feel like this one move changes their bullpen substantially.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Oh, yeah. We got Faj in here. Fajg, get over here. Get over here. I want to hear your thoughts really fast. Jacob's here. Jacob is our father, Overlord Jacob. And what are your thoughts on the trade?
Starting point is 00:10:41 It does, in fact, look like Mike Hazen works on the weekends. So that narrative can shut the fuck up. I'm sorry about that. And eat at Mike Hayes and haters. You just came in here with the negative. What do you think of the trade? What they gave up and what they got back in return. Look, Ryan Bliss is probably to me the biggest piece going back.
Starting point is 00:10:59 He's having his breakout 20, 23 year. But I am also seeing people not trying to be height this year, but I am seeing people come after him and say he's 5'6. 6.4 guy. 6'7, but, you know, 8 foot, 9 foot tall. There you go with the heightism. But look, we've talked about it the whole time, right? They've been looking for the ability to control players for more than just half a season.
Starting point is 00:11:22 They weren't looking for rentals. So it's, I mean, this is exactly what you were looking for. I mean, you don't get three and a half years like you would with Bednar, but you're also probably giving up a top five prospect in your system for Bednar. So, you know, I'm not going to say anything's said and done at this point, but I think this makes them both immediately better and still helps them contend next year as well. And I think that's the focus, right? I think the focus here is that they can still be good this year,
Starting point is 00:11:50 but I really think that next year is the year that they think that they can be an actual contender. And maybe that's just my feeling on it, but I think that that might be the direction as well. Nate Cleveland says, come on, Derek, we had Jose Valberde. Don't you dare. Don't you dare. Don't, don't. That man through two pitches.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Brewer's just acquired Mark Kana from the Mets. So the hot stove is hot stove. Oh, man. The hot stove is hot. Things are hot. Holy shit. Well, I think that for the most part, I can't wait to hear Jesse's point of view on this because I know he has some thoughts. But I think that we are in agreement that this package was not too much to give up to help a significant glaring problem that the Diamondbacks not only have had this year, but as Jesse wrote in a piece on go phtnx.com, they've had their entire existence.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Like they've never had a guy like Paul Seawald before technically. And if he can come here and pitch like the way he does for the Mariners. Yeah. Then I mean, this is a completely different situation. Yeah. First off, Jazeer is making a good point. Technically, we don't know that Hayeson didn't take the weekend off. You could have just gotten an early start today.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Fair. Fair. Got this trade done. Sometimes you get up early on Monday morning. You're inspired. You're ready to go. You get your coffee early. But yeah, I mean, like out of all of the needs,
Starting point is 00:13:07 you can make an argument for whatever one, whether it's that extra power bat or the starting rotation or the bull. pen, closer, whatever. You can make an argument for all of those being kind of the most needed thing to get this team to a position to win a world series this year. But like you said, having a closer feels different. Like that one, it's a, it's a point of need where like having, you know, having a third arm in the rotation is awesome.
Starting point is 00:13:34 But it doesn't matter if you're going to the bullpen and the bullpen's blowing it and you can't, don't have anybody in the knife. Like having a closer, especially with the history of this organization has, the history that this organization has had, it feels different. And I think like that is the one move where, again, you got to do more. But that is the one move where you hope that it is finally the answer to the question. And you can kind of build everything else from there. A couple of things in the chat.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Someone said something about Mark Melanson, and I hate it because he's right. Stephen Smith says also, just to be fair, Malantso was freaking sick the year before he gave here. You're right. He also had a sick defense behind. him and a sick team behind him, but you're absolutely right. Mark Millanson could absolutely close game. He led the league and saves the year before the Diamondbacks got him. And they also got Ian Kennedy.
Starting point is 00:14:22 So we thought that that closer situation was done then. So who knows? O. Martinez says it's a fine package. Bliss hurts, but Tommy Troy's here. So I'm chilling. I like that. Michael Hyde asked, can you guys talk a little bit about the player the Mariners got? So Josh Rojas, he had an actually really hot start.
Starting point is 00:14:40 We've called Josh Rojas the instigator before, because he's a gamer. He likes to get in the heads of his opponents. He's a local guy, so it's emotional for us to lose Josh Roas. He's just a great guy. His, I mean, the interactions we have with him as press in the clubhouse are always amazing. He's always really funny. And, I mean, he's a guy that goes out there and gives it his all.
Starting point is 00:15:03 He really had a hot start this season, but things kind of fell off. And he found himself back in AAA because he had options, and the Diamondbacks just kind of were sort of. swapping guys around to try to find an answer there, especially at third base. But I will say that Ryan Bliss is the guy that you as a Seattle Mariners fan should be most interested. Because Bliss has really moved up in the Diamondbacks organization quite a bit this season.
Starting point is 00:15:27 And he's just been absolutely phenomenal for the Reno, for, yeah, for Reno Aces. But for, excuse me, for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. He was hitting 358-414-594 with a 1.008 OPS. to be honest, he has actually struggled for the Reno Aces as of lately. But, I mean, again, he's a minor league guy, but I still see a lot in Ryan Bliss, and I think that he's going to be very good. And as far as Rojas goes, like, he's the most MLB ready player. Like, he has the most MLB experience of any of the three guys.
Starting point is 00:16:00 And you never know, like, playing in your hometown comes with a certain amount of pressure that doesn't show up in other places. There's not as many people asking you for tickets every day. And there's not as much of that, like, presence there. So you don't know if the change of environment might end up being good for Josh Rojas. So that's something I think to maybe be hopeful for if you're a Mariners fan as well. That's a great point. And then James Cousniak in the comment says, Hazen definitely works weekends.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Routinely seen him at 7 a.m. before anyone else is in the building. So there's your answer, everybody. There's your answer. But, yeah. Again, maybe he's just getting an early start on one day. He's always there. He's always there. He's never not there.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And then Dominic Anzon, another really good player. in the Arizona Diamondbacks. I had a couple of big hits so far. Yeah, he's had some huge hits in the major league level. So he's definitely got the dog in him. And he'll get older and bigger and stronger. He's slower than you think he will be. I will say that.
Starting point is 00:16:53 You're going to look at him and be like he looks like he could be quick. He's not. He runs awkward and he's not as quick as you want him to be. But he's had some big hits. Gabriel Ferrer says Josh Rojas has zero major league home runs this season in all caps. Dude, when you sell someone a lemon, you don't tell him that the, Well, you said, no, you made the sale. You can tell him anything you want to know.
Starting point is 00:17:12 That seems like that seems in bad taste. He had more home runs, but all right, yeah, fine. He had more home runs in one game in Chicago last year than he's had all of this year. That's fair. And I mean, I guess you could say that he's had more home runs in any single game that he had a home run last year than he's had all this year. But still. Overall, I think it is, I think it's more than I would have expected, but not also not, like I'm not, it's different pieces. I don't think we've talked about a lot of these guys besides Ryan Bliss perhaps being involved in.
Starting point is 00:17:40 the trade. So, like, I, I'm not. I mean, the Rojas thing is interesting, right? Because, like, yeah, it's not someone that's been mentioned at all. And he, like, has not, like, he's not really been a factor for the debath at this point. And I don't think really, like, in terms of people talking about the debacks for the next couple of years, whatever, no one brings up Josh Rojas. Like, like, if we're being honest. Well, he felt his trade value was fairly low right now. Exactly. But his trade value was low. And but he also never really seemed to be that big of a part of the future for the diamond backs in terms of. of when this team gets to where they need to be.
Starting point is 00:18:12 No, he was actually the last guy included in the Granky trade, so he almost wasn't even-Urism Diamondbacks. As far as the Diamondbacks are concerned, that's like a wash for me. Like, that is a, if you're able to use that as a piece for this trade, then I think that's great. Watchman WD asks, is there more trades to come or are we done? Well, we were fairly pessimistic about an hour and a half ago
Starting point is 00:18:33 when we were doing this show. So things have changed fairly quickly around here. We're winning it all. Yeah, we're winning it all. Now we're all in, put all of your money on the Arizona it was so over. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:43 It was the first thing that David said to me. We were ready to tear chase field down and turned it into a parking lot and stuff. But now we're back. We're back. The Diamondbacks are once again a wagon. That's at least the rumor that I'm hearing. So I don't know. I do think more trades are coming.
Starting point is 00:18:57 That's the word from Bob Nightingale. But now that Bob Nightingale's tweeted that, that probably won't happen. So who knows? I will say keep it locked right here. Again, we have Jesse in San Francisco. go so he will get a chance to talk to Paul Seawald once he joins the team and we'll have some more information for you guys in regards to that. But yeah, like just taking a moment here, just soaking all of this in.
Starting point is 00:19:21 I mean, I do feel a little skepticism because of the way that closer trades have gone in the past for this team. So I'm pumping my breaks, but I feel very excited about the fact that we actually, like, do you think, Tori has to pivot now, right? He can't do fucking closer by committee anymore. Now, dude, he has a closer. That's the point of bringing in a closer, right? You just don't, you don't bring a closer
Starting point is 00:19:47 and you do closer by committee anymore, right? Yeah, no, that's a great point. Like, there's, like, on a very micro scale, like, you know what it, like, you know what's happening every day. You know that there's a guy, like, gets to the ninth. If we have a leader tied. And I just talked about that with the fucking thing with Brent Strong. Yeah, like it is.
Starting point is 00:20:05 So, like, he has that closer mentality. and that mentality once again, nobody's coming to save you. This is your job to get this done. And even if you lose it, bitch, you're going to stay in there and you're going to get the final out
Starting point is 00:20:16 so we can go home if you're going to lose it, right? Like, that's the way that this is going to work. But I don't, I just, I can't believe it. I really can't.
Starting point is 00:20:24 I didn't think that we were going to see Tori Pivot on this. And honestly, bringing in a closer, ultimately means he has to. Yeah, no, it is, it is nice.
Starting point is 00:20:34 He doesn't have a choice. So, and also, who I like this. Steven Smith says, McGuff 7th gingle 8th CWald 9th? Why not? Why not? Who says no?
Starting point is 00:20:41 Who says no? I don't say no. I mean, yeah, right? Like, at the end of the day, fucking Tori's got, Tori doesn't have a choice. So you can't blame Tori when the things go wrong of the night. He's got to,
Starting point is 00:20:51 he's got to pitch. He's got to pitch Seawall. That might be the sexiest back three in baseball. Yeah, that's a hot back three. Oh, no, you might need to mix Austin Adams in there. Yeah. No, I'll throw Austin Adams in there. Just to throw at somebody's head real quick,
Starting point is 00:21:04 start a fight, just so everyone knows what the fuck is going on. and then we can get back to normally scheduled program. Thunder Bowl 47 has a very good point. He says, but the offense. And yes, I mean, we know that one of the items on Mike Hazen's shopping list was a power bat. So who knows? Maybe that's the next thing. He didn't get Julio in this trade.
Starting point is 00:21:24 It felt like, what are you doing? Why are you doing that? It is a damn shame. There's a lot of things that are shame we can't get in any of these trades. But I will take a power bat of any kind at this point, considering the position they're in. Or who knows, maybe Kyle Lewis can get it together and hit what he's hitting in Reno up here at a major league level of DH. I don't know. But I do think that this still isn't enough.
Starting point is 00:21:48 It brings me a lot of joy to know that the Diamondbacks have a little bit of stability at the back end of their bullpen in high leverage situations. But they have to get there, right? And that's the point I think a lot of people are making is if they keep playing the way they're playing lately, Seawald isn't going to get a chance to get in the game very often. So we really do need something to happen. Jacob bringing up some money and you can think about. Does he have a song? Does he have a song?
Starting point is 00:22:13 Like are we going to get a fucking... I'm going to be crazy if he individually came out to that. But are we going to have a good closer song? Like are we going to, oh, man, IOP. Ooh, baby. Like I feel like with him having been in Seattle and his name being Seawald, there had to be something incredible and it had to be... Wonderwall would be a great...
Starting point is 00:22:33 Ship-related Wonderwall. Wonderwall is a... Because you imagine an entire crowd, and I don't even really rock with that song like that, but like, do you imagine an entire crowd? You're my wonder. I mean, at this point, that's exactly what he is. But I'm still very sad to lose the pieces that we lost more because of knowing them over, you know, of course, you know, all the joy of Dominic Canso making his debut and everything. Like you said, the big million dollar smile. Oh, that smile.
Starting point is 00:23:02 It's incredible. He's going to light up Seattle. Yeah. Smile. Jrod If we're going to smile for smile I'm just saying Dominic Kenzon's got a purest smile He doesn't got the eyes like you do
Starting point is 00:23:12 But if we're going smile for smile Jrod's the only person who's on the international sex symbolist Twice Yeah He's the only one He's the only one he's special That's kind of wild I mean I don't know how we continue to let you be in charge of this list
Starting point is 00:23:24 What you're doing this list Like that but okay It's like getting mad at AP for being in control of AP Top 25 like it's their fucking list Of course you're right You're right What are you doing here? I don't know what I'm doing.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I don't even know why I'm trying to get in here. But I'll say that when you look at his numbers over the last few seasons, there's just a lot there to like as far as consistency goes. And I mean, you know, ever since he joined the Mariners, he has been kind of a shutdown reliever for them. So it's exciting. I'm excited to have him. And I hope that he can continue to be what he was for Seattle for the years in a time back.
Starting point is 00:24:03 So yeah, I think there will be some more trades though or I hope there will be because if not Then you know like a trade like this at least like we said he's he's here next year so this isn't one of those like all in for this season kind of moves But Marcus what does Marcus say is Justin Turner available Hockey season's around the corner and he's got to go mascot for the Phillies. Whoa a lot whoa whoa whoa whoa we're not doing all this yes what Justin Turner, Red Sox legend. You put some fucking respect on his name. He's earned it.
Starting point is 00:24:36 That would be like our payback for JD. Okay. And so the Dodgers fans have to see him in our uniform. Piss them off. All right, I like it. I like it. No, I'm on board. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:24:47 And also, he's pretty fucking good at baseball right now. Just saying, I don't think the Red Sox are selling, but he's... They should be selling. It's pretty fucking good. They should be selling. Stop it. I'm just saying. No, it's Red Sox.
Starting point is 00:24:57 I'm just saying. Relax. It's coming. Thunderbolt 47 says perhaps the victory vest is a really bad omen need a real home run gadget. I'm done blaming the goddamn victory items. Okay? I'm just going to say that now. They cut the head or the tongue out of the snake.
Starting point is 00:25:13 The victory vest needs to go next. No, I love this stuff. None of it needs to go. I think they need more stuff. I still want the Cobra Commander helmet in the dugout for home runs. But I don't get to make those kind of decisions for the team. Anyway, we will be back tomorrow with, of course, our trade deadline. We're still doing it.
