Happy Friday to you?
TGIF, chat.
How are we doing?
I mean, we're living, right?
We're living.
We got a big series this weekend with the Philadelphia Phillies,
but the news is that Cotel Marte is back.
Of course, we have some other news that we kind of discussed a little bit yesterday.
The City Connect jerseys have been, I've landed Kevin,
getting some opinions online, getting some reactions from people,
and it would seem most are pretty favorable.
Today I had a chance to head over to the PHLY Philly show
and our guy Tyler over there very much has been,
very much digs the new look.
And I know that a lot of people are,
kind of liking it. I think the most important part about the City Connect jerseys is that
it's purple, right? I think that's the most important thing here. It's busy. It's kind of cool. It's
unique. It's not something we've seen before. And the one thing I do like about it upon like really
getting to take it in, Kevin, is that, especially that that finalized image there, which,
do we still have that available in here somewhere? If we do, I'd love to throw it up on screen.
There, there he is. I mean, this is this jersey once again.
is really, really good.
And what I do like about it is
it is a combination of kind of all of the eras
of the Arizona Diamondbacks, right?
We have that, we have the short-lived gradient era,
which a lot of people don't want to remember,
but there was still some good jerseys from this team
in that period of time.
But you have pinstripes here and purple
representing the golden years of this team.
And obviously the,
the things that they did back in 2001 and everything that this team has in its past.
Serpientis is present from the last city connect jersey, and that's something that means a lot
to a lot of people.
I know some people would have preferred that they didn't go in the Serbientis direction,
but again, it's big for this community.
It's something unique for this Diamondbacks team, and I don't hate it.
I think the fact that it is something that is ours and represents the Hispanic culture that is so rich here
in the valley is a really cool part of it.
But yeah, when, again, when you told me that they were going to like kind of honor the different
eras of the Diamondbacked jerseys and, you know, and kind of put it all together into one,
much like hearing all the rumors about all of this stuff and thinking there's no way these
are all true, it somehow works.
So I think that they did a great job with it.
Let's see in the comments.
Brucey says, take off the pinstripes and the black sleeves and it would be fire.
The sleeves are actually dark purple.
We've had many discussions about that because some of the images they absolutely look black.
Other ones, they do look dark purple.
It does appear that the sleeves are dark purple.
But I'm kind of with you on that.
Our guy's son's uni, is it son's uni watch?
He had a good mockup at one point, which very much looked like this, but it was just an all purple with no separation of the sleeves.
That, in my opinion, that was my favorite.
But this one's very close.
I'm with you on that.
I'm not a big fan of the sleeves being two-tone,
but that's the part of it.
That's reminiscent of the old Diamondbacks jersey combo that we used to have back,
you know, in the 2000 era.
So that's a part of that.
I don't know.
I feel like this was intentional.
I feel like the Diamondbacks putting all of these eras of their jerseys together in one
was intentional.
But if it wasn't, then it's kind of brilliant because it does all come together pretty well.
Derek, it's way too early.
It's way too early for me to even think.
about asking you this but I'm going to think about asking you this.
Oh, God, what?
What direction you think they go in next?
Because, because the rumor, because the rumor was they're going to go away from Serbientes.
Yeah.
They keep the Serbientez branding a little bit.
Sure.
But they change the color ways of everything.
Yeah.
Do you think that they maintain Serbientes going forward or do you think that next year's
city connects are a completely different direction?
Well, they'll have a number of years where this will be the city connect.
So this won't go away, just like the Serbientis was, what, four years I've
believe so. Beyond that, I don't know if they keep doing the city connect. I don't know if they
maybe incorporate the purple and teal into their actual uniform set, right? Like,
their kit should be purple and teal and should have a little bit copper in there. I don't
know why this team is so reluctant to go in that direction because if you're running this thing
as a business, if you're running this as a business and a big part of a business is making money,
then you got to give the people what they want,
in the words of the best friends from AEW,
you got to give the people what they want.
And what the people want is purple and teal.
It's something I thought of when I was, again,
talking about these jerseys with Tyler earlier today.
When you walk around Chase Field,
how many Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez jerseys do you still see?
Take note.
Maybe, you know, keep a count.
Because one thing I have noticed at times,
especially when we were in Las Vegas for their, you know,
spring training series there against the athletics,
is that there were way more throwback jerseys being worn
than there were current jerseys.
Now I know a part of that is because they're a little bit easier to purchase
from some of those eBay websites.
Am I right?
But also, you know, it's because people love them.
It's because people want to rock the jersey of a legend like Randy Johnson
and Luis Gonzalez.
They don't have to worry about a player that they choose potentially leaving the team,
which plenty of good options now that.
Mike Kazen is extending everybody.
But I get it.
I understand when people have that kind of reluctance to want, you know,
to want to come on with the New Jersey's,
especially when really at the end of the day,
the old stuff that the Diamondbacks had had was so good.
It was such a beautiful combination of colors.
And it did such a great job of representing Arizona.
I think that's the biggest thing about looking at the old Diamondbacks color schemes
in any capacity is that, you know, that teal, the purple, the copper,
all of it was very deliberate on how it, you know,
basically was a part of the state.
So I don't know.
I could talk about this for hours.
And I know you guys probably could too,
because these studied connectors,
these are kind of fascinating.
But I have one man here that wants to talk more
about Cotel Marte's return than anything else.
And it is the returning king himself,
the one and only thunder stick, Jesse Friedman.
Let's get Jesse in here.
Jesse, I got this chicken tendy shirt on
in honor of you today.
So I hope you're feeling the love.
How you doing, buddy?
I'm good, Derek. I'm very much feeling the chicken tendi's love over here.
So I appreciate it. Wait till Totri sees me wearing this and sees me talking to you. He's going to lose his mind.
But all right, man, Cattel Marte is back. Diamondbacks have their MVP returning. And I mean, honestly, it's not to knock their offense because they did do enough to just take two out of three from the Mets.
But it feels like their offense is kind of in a rut right now. It could really use somebody like Marte coming back and giving them a spark.
I think it's especially in a rut against left-handed pitching right now.
And I talked to Matt Gelb of the athletic previewing this weekend series over on Snake's
territory.
And he told me that the Phillies were very happy to have two lefties going in this three-game
series this weekend, the Diamond Baxel face Jesus Lazzardo, who's been very, very good
for the Phillies tonight.
And then they face another lefty and Rangers' switzerland.
Juarez on Sunday as he pitches in his first game of the season. So this is something that other
teams around the league are definitely taking notice of the Diamondbacks offense as a whole has been
quite good this year. But their offense against lefties has actually been pretty poor. I think
they're probably bottom five, certainly bottom 10 in OPS against against left-handed pitching. Last
I checked, it was around 650, something like that. So there are a few things.
better for an offense against left-handed pitching than adding Catele Marte to the top of the lineup,
right? I mean, we've talked about that for years that Catell is a great hitter all around,
and he's, you know, he's really gotten better against Ritey's the last couple seasons.
It's part of why he's really emerged as an elite player. But Catell, you know, can roll out of
bed in the morning and go three for four against just about any, any left-handed pitcher in this game.
And that's a, that's a huge, a huge benefit.
for this team. His splits from last year, Jesse, are just kind of remarkable against left-handed
pitching. He hit 342, 401, slug 679, or 1080 OPS. He had 18 home runs. That's the
interesting part is obviously he had more, he had plenty of at bats against right-handed pitching,
more at bats against righties than lefties, right? But his numbers are almost split right down the
middle in regards to his home runs and his RBI, 18 and 18, and then you had 50 RBI against right-handed
pitching and 45 against left-handed pitching. However, 311 at bats against righties,
193 against lefties. So you're absolutely right. Ketell mash's lefties and it's something right now
that this team is not doing. They also have too many holes. It feels like gaps in their production
in their starting lineup, right? You know, you get the guys off the top. Heraldo Podomo,
even though he's better in the ninth hole, has been doing great at the top of the lineup. Corbyn Carroll,
he's kind of cooled off a bit, but he's still always a threat to get on base or to do what he's been doing so far this year, right?
But it's just once you get past Josh Naylor, that that kind of valley, that cavern there, that lack of production from, you know, Gino who still can all of a sudden give you four home runs in a day, LARDIS, who still seems like he's, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to talk about him.
I'm not supposed to talk about it in front of the little LG3, but Lord is who's been struggling.
And obviously, you know, Gabby, who still isn't where a lot of people would like them to be.
And it feels like, you know, even when things get going, unfortunately, if those guys aren't
contributing this offense, just stalls out.
Yeah, I mean, the lineup wasn't supposed to be as top heavy as it's been so far, right?
I mean, that's what made the Diamondbacks offense last year.
One of the best in the sport was that it was, it was one of the ones.
through nine, you know, even when Corbyn Carroll for much of the first half of last season was really
struggling, this team was still scoring a whole bunch of runs because when you're getting
that much production up and down the lineup, it's okay if someone near the top is kind of going
through it. What we've seen so far is the Diamondbacks one through four hitters just totally
destroy. And then everyone else has not really has not really done a whole lot, although certainly
there have been some positive signs. You're starting to see Lordus Gurriel heat up a little bit.
Gino simultaneously feels like he's having a bad season and is also on pace to hit like 60 home runs.
So I'm not really sure what to make of his situation. But you feel like eventually these guys are
going to kind of figure it out. I think with Lordus in particular, something that we talked about
over on Snake's territory the other day was that Lordis has had a month.
like he just had really in just about every season of his career you look at the past couple of
seasons i believe it was may of last year where he had a low 500s ops and then i think it was july of
23 he had a 480 ops in july of 23 so i think people have have really been down on him
just because it's happening at the beginning of the year where we're not used to ever seeing his
OPS as low as it is right now.
But the reality is he kind of goes through this every year.
It's just so happens that it's the way that he's starting out the season.
So it feels a little different.
Jesse, I made another mistake.
You might not have seen it or been around for it.
But I did say that if Gino hit 50 home runs this year, that I would dye my beard,
teal.
And then when Gino went into a rut, Jesse, I lowered that number to full.
40 because it was more of me daring him now to get me to dye my hair, my beard,
teal.
And the four home run game really gave me some perspective on the mistake that I had made
because Gino, like somebody said in the chat,
Gino will hit 50 home runs with a 205 batting average and not even blink and eye about it.
But I could tell Marté reinstated today, Jorge Brosa optioned, the AAA Reno.
Any surprises there?
I know a lot of the discussion was focusing on Gary.
at Hampson or Tim Tawa, but Barrosa was kind of the guy here that is the extra man out
that really hasn't been doing too well. I think it took me a while to realize that this was
probably what the Diamondbacks were going to do because I think naturally you just think of
like swapping out of players who plays the same position, right? Tell is not an outfielder. So it feels
it feels odd that they're that they're sending out an outfielder to make this move.
But I definitely understand where where they're coming from here.
Tim Tawa has, you know, I wouldn't say he's like totally knocked the cover off the ball,
but he's certainly done well for himself.
Productive at that.
And five home runs.
You can't you can't say that that's been bad over the course of one month.
Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, I think Tim Tawa has really been everything that you could have hoped for.
he definitely has played well enough to stay on this team.
It would have felt really weird if they had sent him back down.
So it felt like he belonged.
But then there's also this narrative of the fact that Tim Tawa hasn't really ever played shortstop professionally.
I think he played like two games there in AA last year.
Yeah, in Amarillo.
That's all I could find.
I couldn't find any other shortstop experience in Reno or really not too much even before that.
Like he really has not played a lot of shortstop overall in his career.
And that was the one thing that made me think the same thing that Jack thought, which was, you know, even though Garrett Hampson is not having the season that Tawa has, it's the versatility that Hampson can offer because not only can he play the infield positions, but he can also play outfield.
So just to kind of break glass in case of emergency player that that Tori likes to have around.
totally and and i think the diamond backs had an opportunity in spring training to maybe give tim tawa
some some reps at shortstop but i know you spent a lot more time out at salt river than i did but my
understanding is that he was never really seen at shortstop throughout throughout spring training so
i know people will maybe roll their eyes like okay do you really need like is it really that big a deal
to have someone on the roster besides heraldo perdomo who can play shortstop like
Perdomo just had his first day off a couple days ago and we're more than a month into the season.
But especially with Catell coming off the hamstring injury, like, I don't think you want to play him over at shortstop in an emergency situation.
So I think I can definitely see where the debacks are coming from and wanting to have a shortstop on the roster.
So that's where Garrett Hampson comes in.
And then, and then, yeah, Jorge Barrosa has not played terribly by any.
any means. I know the offensive numbers haven't been great. But he's a solid defensive center
fielder. And I thought it was interesting the setup of having him face lefties, whereas
Alec Thomas faces righties, kind of a platoon situation in center field. The debacks now don't
have that anymore. And it'll be interesting to see how this works out, Derek, because now you have,
now you have Alec Thomas in there tonight against Jesus Lazzardo, who's been really, really, really good.
So this will be a test for Alec Thomas, and we'll see, we'll see if he's up for it.
Jigurth is here, Jesse.
You're here.
Jigurth is here.
It's a party now.
We are back.
We've never been so back.
But obviously, Cattel, you know how baseball players are returning from injury.
He looked pretty dialed in.
Somebody had some video of his backfield game the other day.
He hit two home runs in it.
Look like he looked like he was raring to go.
Do you expect Cattel to come back and kind of take some time to get going?
or do you think he's going to have like an impact right away on this series in Philadelphia?
Naturally, I think with someone of his caliber, I'd expect him to have an impact right away.
I think it might look a little different than we're used to seeing.
Like, is Ketel going to be busting it up the first baseline on a slow roller to the shortstop?
Probably not.
And I don't.
They probably don't want him doing that for sure.
Yeah, I think you'd probably be discouraging that at this point.
And I also am curious to see how.
how much second base he actually is going to play, especially early on here.
Like, I think that's another, another reason why the debacks went the direction they did is that
Tim Tawa is not just going to ride the bench.
Like, he's going to get some opportunities playing second base, probably a decent amount
as the debacks kind of ease Ketel back into things with, with some D.H reps.
So, um, so yeah, it'll be interesting to see what, what the, the playing time split looks like on
defense, but Kattel's a really talented player and there's two lefties in there this weekend.
We know his history at Citizens Bank Park. He's had some big games there to say the least.
I think I think I would not be at all surprised if Ketel goes in and has a big series right away.
Well, we are going to talk more about this series on the other side of this break,
the bullpen. We have a lot of things to talk about with Jesse Friedman. Of course, don't you go anywhere.

All right.
Let's see.
Ina Jackson says, I wait, I got that wrong.
Tawa played 50.
We'll get to that.
Let me verify what Ina Jackson is talking about.
She's usually not wrong.
That's our aunt I know.
But Jesse, we got to preview this series with the Phillies.
we know that the Diamondbacks are kind of on a roll here.
This kind of looked like a disaster, actually,
heading into this road trip with the way that they were performing at home.
They were facing some tough teams.
It's an East Coast road trip.
A lot of good players here.
And somehow the Diamondbacks did a great job,
especially they're starting pitching in that series against the Mets.
And here against the Phillies,
you have to feel pretty good about Merrill Kelly and Brandon Fott
being on the mound for the Diamondbacks in two out of these three games.
They've pitched really, really well lately.
Merrill Kelly had somehow he still has a 4.41 ERA.
It's tough when you give up nine runs and one outing.
At this stage of the year, it's going to take a while for that number to come down.
But he's really pitched well in all but one start this season.
He's been Merrill the mainstay, as we're used to saying about him, right?
And then Brandon Fod has been definitely the most consistent member
of this rotation throughout the season.
I mean, a sub three ERA.
He leads the Diamondbacks and innings pitched.
He's right at six innings per start on average,
which has been a positive about Brandon Fought really ever since he first came in the league,
that even if the run prevention wasn't quite what you hoped it would be,
he's still probably going to go out there and be able to pitch six innings.
He's another guy who's had some big games against the Phillies in particular in the past,
going back to that NLCS in 2023.
So, so yeah, those two guys you feel pretty good about Eduardo Rodriguez on Sunday.
I don't really know what to make of that situation.
His peripherals are arguably better than anyone else on the Diamondbacks.
It's crazy, right?
It's nuts.
It doesn't make any sense.
It's kind of mind-boggling.
I think his over on Snake's territory, we like to nerd out every once in a
while. I bet. And my esteemed co-host, Jack Summers, took the average of, for each of the Dback
starters, he took the average of their expected ERA, their FIP and their XFIP, which are all just like
ERA estimator sorts of things. And the average for Eduardo was 3.42, three different stats that are
basically suggesting that Eduardo has pitched to a level of a 3.42 ERA.
and yet you look up at his actual ERA and it starts with a six.
So we're still early enough in the season that I'm not writing off
Eduardo Rodriguez by any means, especially considering what those underlying stats say.
But he did not pitch particularly well in that start at City Field to say the least.
Yeah, and that's for sure.
And we have a look here at the projected starters for the series.
Erod going there in the finale against Ranger Suarez, who makes his debut.
Aaron Nola in game two going up against Brandon Fott.
Again, 0 and 5.40, very surprising out of Nola this season.
And it feels like the Phillies are kind of in a similar place as the Diamondbacks,
just in the aspect that their pitchers are good.
And both of these teams have what the same record, right?
I mean, this is like two teams that honestly probably should have a better record.
Don't.
Some of their pitchers aren't pitching well.
but then also based on how bad some of their starters have been pitching or things have been for them,
then maybe they should be even a worse position.
Diamondbacks had a little bit of a taste of that.
Feels like they're finally getting some consistency.
It was great to see, you know, two good starts in a row out of Corbyn Burns and Zach Gallen.
Zach Gallen is just a different pitcher when he pitches in the state of New York.
I can't explain it.
Science can't explain it.
Your fancy numbers can't explain it, Jesse.
It's just no.
It doesn't make any sense at all.
But again, that's the thing is, is that when you see Gallen pitch like that, you know that there is a, I guess a middle ground where he's consistent and he's maybe not as good as he was in New York against the Yankees, maybe not a 13 strikeout pitcher, but still a guy that can go out there and give you what he's giving you out throughout his whole career.
This entire first month has just been a weird, bumpy, you know, kind of road for Gallen, but it does feel.
like now, especially in his last two starts with his ability to get ahead in the count and
command his fastball, like it feels like Gallen is very much back. And all it really took was
pretty much command of his fastball, right? Like, the command of fastball, then he can get ahead
in the count, and then he can use the secondary stuff. And then everything just kind of falls into
place for him. He's kind of been the model of inconsistency so far, right? And I don't mean that
in like a completely negative way.
I mean, he was, he was awesome in that final game against the Mets.
What led the way for the Diamondbacks to a really big series win,
but you just don't know what you're going to get, right?
I mean, he could be dominant like he was yesterday or he could, you know,
have 80 pitches in the third inning.
We've seen some starts that have looked like that too.
So while there is definitely reason to believe that Zach Allen has, has regressed a little bit,
You know, you look at his numbers over the past year and a half.
I think his ERA still starts with a four in that stretch.
But at the same time, what I will continue to say about Zach Gallen is his curveball when
it is on is one of the nastiest putaway pitches in the sport.
And that's why on any given day, no matter what his previous start might have looked like,
there's a chance that when Zach Gallen is on the mound, you're going to get an outing
like what you saw yesterday or what you saw against the Yankees.
Like that pitch is still in there.
And so I don't really know what to make of the month plus that we've seen so far from him.
You mentioned the fastball command.
That continues to be the thing we're going back to over and over again and rightfully so.
But even if Zach Allen has regressed a little bit, even if he's not, you know, maybe at the peak of his career like he was a couple of seasons ago,
he's still better than the pitcher that we've seen so far.
Like if the over-under is a five-ERA for Zach Gallen,
I'm taking the under,
even if there are some concerns with some of the underlying numbers.
One of the things that's always fascinated me about Gallin
is even on a night when you and I would go speak to him after a game
and he would have a great start,
he would still tell us that two pitches weren't working for him that night.
You know, or he would, you know, like he would,
I don't think I've ever once seen Zach Gallen be fully satisfied with his performance
and ever thought that or ever said anything about, yep, I had all my stuff tonight.
Never.
He never has all of his stuff.
And that's the funny thing about it is that's like, I guess from an organization standpoint,
from a coaching standpoint, because of that, you got, you have to feel like Gallant still has more to,
more to achieve or like another level to hit, right?
but sometimes it's just about him maybe being brutally honest
and the fact that like, yeah, I still threw that pitch well tonight.
I just didn't have a good feel for it tonight.
Or I did this, but it didn't, you know, things weren't working.
But like Gallin has always been very transparent about like its pitch is not working.
And it feels like he never has everything running on all cylinders on any given outing,
which, again, it shows how talented he can be.
It shows how many weapons he can have.
And like when things aren't working, he can switch gears and he can make that.
you know, adjustment during an outing to, you know, to go to the stuff that is working for him,
right? But one thing that has been really interesting with this team, Jesse, is what's going on
with the bullpen, the injuries, the changes. Ryan Thompson has suddenly become the biggest
stud I've ever seen in my entire life. So there's that. That was great to see. But more importantly,
you're just saying that because he likes pro wrestling, all right? No, Jesse. I'm saying not because
This man all of a sudden turned into a superhero in New York.
He, him and Zach Gallen, there's something about the water in New York State that turns these guys into legends.
But no, he was pretty good in this series against the Mets.
And I mean, honestly, especially when Justin Martinez kind of fell apart there in the ninth inning to go to Ryan Thompson.
I mean, I'll be honest.
Like, that was a disaster situation for me that I was just waiting to have unravel and lead to a Diamondback's law.
And instead, Thompson, who obviously was not expecting to step up into that role because you have J-Mart go out there in the ninth inning, you think that's a wrap, right?
You think win or lose, that's the guy that's going to go out there.
You're not expecting as a relief pitcher to have to get ready and, you know, go out there and pitch like he did.
And honestly, I thought he did a great job, but I just still can't get over the additions of Shelby Miller and Jalen Beaks to this bullpen early on in the season and how absolutely crucial they've been to the success of this team,
especially Shelby Miller now who appears to be stepping into that closing roll.
Real quick on the Justin Martinez situation.
Oh, yes.
Let's take a step back.
Sure.
It just occurred to me that J-Mart, I believe, averaged 95.5 with his sinker the other night.
And that was like setting off alarm bells that something was wrong because he wasn't growing.
They're like, wait, 96.
What the hell is going on?
something broken with him.
Yeah.
And obviously, I'm not saying that it isn't a legitimate concern.
It 100% is.
And I think the debacks totally made the right move and putting him on the aisle and all that stuff.
But I just wonder.
That's still throwing what would be a normally great pitch for another pitcher was like,
oh, God, we got to go check on him.
Something's not right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like what would baseball fans 20 years ago have thought if we told them like a guy's out
there throwing a 96-mile-hour sinker with like 20 inches of run and everyone's wondering like
what's wrong with Justin Martinez. But yeah, going back to the bullpen situation at large,
I'm really curious what the debacks do at the back end moving forward. I'm with you and that
it appears Shelby Miller is the closer. And I don't really see a reason why he wouldn't just stick in
that role, at least as long as he's pitching reasonably well in that spot. At this point,
I don't, I don't think the debacks would view Jalen Beaks as being one of those top closer options.
No.
I think we're talking, right? They need a lefty to be able to go at different times during the
outing. They can't just have him like potentially just for the ninth inning.
Right, right, exactly. So because your candidates for that spot are all right handed,
in my mind, it's like, well, yeah, if Shelby Miller is your guy, then make Shelby Miller your guy.
There's no reason to do the kind of committee thing.
And it's funny because, you know, we might wind up in a, a 2023-esque situation where it's a Ryan Thompson seventh inning, a Kevin Ginkle eighth inning.
And then Shelby Miller, I guess, is the new Paul Seawald.
I don't know.
Don't say that.
No, we don't want that.
But I get what you're saying.
Yeah.
Yeah, I guess.
Incredible, right?
I mean, he's been so good.
And, like, the one thing I described last night was, like,
all of Shelby Miller's outings, every inning he's pitched for this team,
has been kind of stress-free, drama-free.
Like, it's not that he doesn't walk an occasional batter or give up a run or give up a hit.
Excuse me, he doesn't give up runs.
That's what he doesn't do so far.
But it's just, it's so nice because that's been a big problem, I think, with a lot of pitchers, honestly.
Like, not to say they don't get out of it, Kevin Ginkle has shown an amazing ability that even when he gets himself
into a position with runners on base
that he can pitch out of it, right?
And that's been an attribute that's made him such a big weapon
for those high leverage situations
to come into a game when, you know,
another pitcher has allowed runners to get on base
and he has inherited runners, right?
Gingle's been great at that.
But Shelby Miller is the most stress-free reliever
I've seen in a long time for this time in back.
Actually, I mean, it does take me back.
You're right.
It does take me back a little bit to when we first acquired Paul Seawald
and how like after the roller co-coast
to ride of who was going to close out ninth innings for this team over the 2023 season finally
came to an end and CWalt was going out there. I was like, oh, wow, it's nice to have confidence
that the guy is going to get it done and then have him get it done and then just feel in general like,
oh, this is what it's supposed to be like to have like a good bullpen and a good closer? This feels
great, right? Not to mention, like you said, Ryan Thompson was incredible. Andrew Saul Frank was inexplicably
good during that that period of time. But yeah, it wasn't guys right now that are doing it for this
team necessarily. It was guys, you know, guys that had kind of gotten pushed off a little bit to
that middle of the, I guess, middle relief role. But now Ryan Thompson will be called on upon.
Ginkle obviously was always going to be used in high leverage situations. It doesn't matter when
he comes back. And Shelby Miller, Jesse, it's Miller time. Like, it's so easy for me. There's so
many already images and gifts out there for Miller time that I can use. It makes my job much easier
if he's just our closer for the rest of the season. I think it also adds to the Shelby Miller
back with the Diamondbacks narrative, right? Like it was already a cool story of him,
you know, with what happened in 2016 and in his first stint with the team versus him being a really
important member of this bullpen. But you're looking now, you know, if the diamondbacks do
stick with him in that role and if Justin Martinez winds up being out for longer than the 15 days,
of course, we don't really, we don't really know yet. Hopefully that's not the case. But there's a
chance where Shelby Miller is in this role for a while. And going from, you know, the pitcher he was in
2016 and all of the,
all of the difficulty surrounding that to being the diamondbacks closer and,
and, you know, arguably the most important piece of this bullpen, that's,
that's a pretty cool story.
Well, Jesse, taking a look at the Phillies right now, I know the Diamondbacks,
you can't take anybody lightly, but nobody for the Phillies really is having an outstanding
year offensively, it feels like.
Like, they're still getting contributions from one through nine in their lineup.
But, I mean, Trey Turner, 298 batting average, but he has only a 784 OPS.
Johann Rojas, he's hitting 305 with a 772 OPS.
Kyle Schwabber has like a 100 batting average, but somehow a 945 Ops or whatever the hell he has.
But, I mean, again, this is a, this Phillies team is just like kind of a weird arch nemesis
of the Diamondbacks in a way.
I know that we have, you know, the playoff series, obviously, that helped kind of,
add to this fire of this rivalry existing. But right now, like I said earlier, these teams
kind of are in a similar place where they have some good teams in their division. They're
not doing necessarily bad themselves, and I wouldn't say dwindling in mediocrity, but they're
just kind of hovering a little bit about 500 and kind of playing, I guess, a little bit below
expectations considering the caliber of their starting rotation, much like same thing with
the Diamondbacks. What's really striking to me about the Phillies is,
just how similar this roster is to the one the Diamondbacks faced in 2020.
Right. Yes. I was a don't know to see that myself. They've really embraced continuity here
over the past couple of seasons. And I know it hasn't led to them winning a ring, right?
It was an early exit last season, but it's a team that has continued to have a lot of success.
I guess the one exception there is that they went out and got Jesus Lizardo over the off season.
and it's still early, but man, he looks really good.
Yeah.
And, you know, possibly one of the, one of the biggest, most helpful offseason acquisitions that we'll see all across baseball.
I mean, he has been their best starting pitcher so far.
And it felt like he was just going to be a number five guy who, you know, high risk, high reward kind of situation.
So, but by and large, I mean, yeah, on the position player side, it's a team that looks really familiar.
They don't have Kyle Schwerber in the leadoff spot anymore.
That is one change.
Bryson Stott has been occupying that role,
and he's been really good for them so far this year.
I think he leads the Phillies in Fangraph's war.
Oddly enough, at the beginning of the year,
he's, I think, a ways out in front of anyone else on this team.
But yeah, other than that, it's Bryce Harper,
it's Kyle Schwerber, it's Nick Castellanos.
A lot of these guys are getting up there in age a little bit,
but it's still a pretty good offense and certainly one of the best pitching staffs in the sport as well.
I feel like this is what we're going to be seeing out of more and more teams.
I understand that it's going to be limited amount of teams, Jesse,
but we're going to start seeing teams that have committed so much money to their roster
would not be able to necessarily move the guys because of the amount that they've committed to them financially,
maybe based on their production.
They're not necessarily living up to the amount that they're currently getting paid.
and like we're going to see some rosters kind of stall out here a little bit like this.
It's not to say the Phillies guys are doing bad,
but I don't think I found a single guy in the starting lineup of tonight's game
that has an OPS over 800 besides Schwerper.
I think he was the only one.
But for the most part, not a whole lot of offense being created right now,
but enough, I think from top to bottom that they're still doing a good job.
Again, not throwing stones because we are in a glass house of our own
where when you look at this lineup,
there's not a lot of,
if you're looking at the numbers
in the starting lineup for the Diamondbacks,
there's not much out of the first couple of guys there
named Corbin or Eraldo that scares you a ton about this.
But of course, Paveen Smith, don't sleep on Pavement.
But yeah, Jesse, this is one of those situations
where it does feel like it's a winnable series.
It feels like mostly the starting pitching
kind of has to come in and do its job
so that the bullpen that has already been used quite a bit
over, you know, the last few games can,
can come in and do their job but not get overworked in this series.
Yeah, and I'll add that the Phillies, I think, have some bullpen problems in their own right.
They did not go out and re-sign Jeff Hoffman over the offseason.
Hoffman's been a really important piece of the back end of that bullpen for a while.
They also acquired Carlos Estevez at the trade deadline last year.
And over the off season, they only signed Jordan Romano, who was previously one of the
best closers in all of baseball. But you look at his numbers so far this year. And what he did last year,
he has not been that guy for a while now. So I think if the Diamondbacks are able to get into the
Phillies bullpen, Jose Alvarado has been really, really good at the back end. Matt Strom is still good.
But some of those middle relievers have really struggled this year. I think the Phillies team
bullpen ERA is somewhere in the low mid-five range. So that's definitely been an issue for them
this season. And we know the Diamondbacks offense is good. And, you know, maybe those,
the six, seventh, eighth innings, if you're able to get into that bullpen, that's where
the debacks could could really do some damage against this team. Well, we are going to talk a little
bit more about this series. We're also going to talk about our guy, Yumen Lin, making his triumphant
return to the Reno Aces, being called up to the Aces and making his first start yesterday.
We're going to do all of this on the other side of this break.

All right, we got a super chat from our guy,
Cactus Light.
We just have Cactus Light now.
I love it.
The artist formerly known as RA.
The artist formerly known as RA,
aka Cactus Light.
Let me get them in here.
We can't light them up yet
because the Diamondbacks haven't won,
Jesse, but so far since we've instituted
the lighting up the Cactus Light policy,
the Diamondbacks are undefeated.
So that one.
one might be on our on our viewers and our listeners.
RA formerly known as RA, now Cactus Light says,
Lovin Friedman Friday.
Awesome seeing the boys together.
Jesse, Kevin Derek, all together.
This lineup makes my Friday.
Now we just need to work on getting Damon and Faj on to collect the Infinity Stones.
Well, we're going to have that, at least part of that crew together over at Heeliver Resorts
and Casinos, at least for a show.
I know Jesse can't be in here in person, but Jesse very much still.
loves himself some Yumen Lin.
We all love ourselves some Yumen Lin.
And good news, he is back.
He makes his return to the Diamondbacks organization,
missed time due to serving military time in Taiwan,
as well as spending time as a new father.
So congrats to Yumen Lin.
But he was impressive in his first start back.
I mean, it's baseball, right?
It always takes a little while for a pitcher to get back in the groove,
but he limited Sacramento to two runs on five hits.
He pitched five innings.
He issued no walks and struck out three.
Jesse, I know Yumen Lin is still not close to being in the Diamondbacks organization,
but we adore him.
We want him to succeed.
We want him to eventually be a part of this starting rotation or this major league club in some way, shape, or form.
How great is it to see Yumen Lin finally back?
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's all that crazy to think that Yumen Lin could pitch for the Diamondbacks before two.
long. I mean, frankly, their depth in AAA, like, you know, Yulbert Diaz and Christian Mena,
Tommy Henry, those guys have not gotten off to great starts. So obviously Ryan Nelson is,
is certainly the next man up if the Diamondbacks do need another starter at some point. But
they're probably going to need to dig beyond that, to go beyond that over the course of the
season. And I think U.M. and Lynn could be in that discussion at some point. He pitched, I think
He made one start in AAA toward the end of last season, and he's continuing in AAA to start this season.
And yeah, as you said, he was good in his first start, right?
I think his pitch count was in the low 60s.
He was really efficient as well.
Fastball topped out at 94 miles an hour.
Yes.
So looked like from what I could tell, I didn't actually get to watch the game, but at least from the numbers, it looks like the U.N.
Lynn that we've seen the past couple years, who has emerged as, as.
one of the more exciting pitching prospects in in this organization.
Fairly impressive.
I don't have any clue.
I'm just speculating here on what he's been like up to, right?
But serving military time and being a dad doesn't necessarily scream out to me
that you've been staying in, you know, your baseball shape.
Military makes me think you've definitely been staying in shape for sure.
But again, it's like there's a lot of stuff that's been going on in his life.
And again, not your typical offseason for any baseball player.
So what I feel is impressive is no matter how much time it took him to get back in to baseball shape
and to get ready to go out there and pitch, you know, start in a baseball game, that he was
able to go out there in the PCL and give up, you know, less than three runs and almost give up,
you know, almost have a quality start, right?
Like that that's, again, something that he probably wasn't expected to go out there and pitch well
is just expected to kind of get his feet wet and get back into the, you know, get back to playing
baseball. But yeah, I mean, it's not out of the question to think that even even if he's not
called upon at any point this year, which seems a little bit, you know, farther off that in
2026 with guys that are becoming free agents and other things that might happen for this team,
that not only might he have an opportunity, is it out of line to think you might have an
opportunity either at the starting rotation or at least to be like one of those first, like you
said, one of those first two guys in line for depth, you know, should something go wrong next year?
I mean, I think next year you probably would feel pretty good about you men,
Lynn getting a shot at some point. And again, I don't think it's out of the question this year either.
I mean, if at some point, God forbid somebody gets hurt and Ryan Nelson goes in the rotation,
I don't know who the next man up would be. But I think human Lynn at the very least would be in that
conversation. And maybe it isn't as a starter necessarily. Maybe he comes up.
and is in a role similar to what Ryan Nelson has been doing.
Sure. He's kind of operating as a long man,
trying to give you a few innings pitching behind some other guys.
So there's a variety of ways that it could look.
He's only 21 years old, as I think Ina mentioned in the chat,
which is really impressive to be in AAA and even in the conversation
to be an option for the Major League roster at that age.
So yeah, I mean, he's he's one of the guys on this team that you think really could have a future in a big league rotation.
And just still such an incredible story.
You and I have talked several times about how cool, how much it means to him, I guess I should say,
how much it means to him to be a Taiwanese-born player, to get that chance to kind of be a hero and be something that people aspire to be.
like it's it's it's it's it's it's really cool that he finds that sense of importance and wants to
be that role for for his country right so uh i i it's one of the most exciting stories the
diamondbacks have i know they have a lot of things going on but it's also kind of funny here that
this is a possibility you're not wrong and i would have never expected it to be a possibility based
on how much depth the diamondbacks had at the beginning of the season this would have been such a
a far-fetched fantasy for me if we would have been having this discussion in the middle of
March. But now after all of the injuries they've experienced and, you know, wear that with the
bullpen, where they are just giving kind of, you know, like again, a Jose Castillo, an opportunity
now to be called up. Like, they're looking for guys that can step up and fill a much-needed
role for this team. And, you know, again, that very much could include Lynn before the end of
the season. You're absolutely right about that. So we do have more baseball to talk about, Jesse.
And that's this Sunday.
We're going to be hanging out with our friends out at Gila River Resorts and Casino Wild Horse Pass.
We're going to be doing a watch party.
We're going to watch the final game of this series and keep our fingers crossed that the peripheral Eduardo Rodriguez shows up.
The ex-expected stat, Eduardo Rodriguez shows up for the Diamondbacks.
It is Sunday, May 4th.
So I do require everybody to wear their Star Wars gear.
That's for Gerald.
He demands it.
But join us out there.
We're going to have the watch party, and then we're going to do an episode of this show live.
Of course, RSVP is free.
All you got to go phtonx.com, click on the events tab, and let us know that you're coming.
So we would love to see all of you guys there.
Jesse, again, won't be there in person, but he'll be stopping by on the show.
We're going to talk about this series and recap the Diamondbacks,
hopefully staying on a roll, staying on a hot streak here.
But Jesse, I know you're not a big fight guy.
I know you're more of a lover than a fighter.
I'm very well aware of that.
However, there's this fake talk and baseball account that keeps getting us, and we catch it.
We don't get completely fooled by it.
However, this is one of those times, Jesse, that we wish that they weren't lying to us.
We wish this wasn't a fake thing because according to this tweet that came out, actually,
they credited Jeff Passon, who probably has no idea what they're talking about.
But according to this fake tweet, blooper was going to fight the Philly Finlay.
Phenetic at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, May 27th.
They have this graphic of them both having boxing gloves on.
And in my imagination, this does take place in an octagon at the very least,
maybe a ring of some kind with ropes.
But I wanted to see this fight, Jesse.
I feel like Blooper really had a chance to write a lot of wrongs for a lot of people.
The Philly Fanatic has been harassing people for years.
I think even though Blupor isn't really.
really a widely known mascot.
He had a really good chance there with his reach.
He has a little bit longer of a reach.
And then you also have the Philly Fanatics,
whatever its beak thing is.
It's closer to.
So I would have 100% put all of my money,
no matter the odds on this over at Bet365 on blooper.
Unfortunately, it's not a real fight.
But it got me to thinking about baseball mascot fights.
I brought Kevin into the discussion.
And Kevin's one response in regards to this was that all baseball mascots are soft,
to Jesse, that's what Kevin thinks is that all baseball mascots are soft.
Again, a complete mischaracterization of what I said.
Well, I'm summarizing.
Me and Derek were arguing about whether, first of all, what mascots do you want to see fight each other?
Yeah.
And then also, are you arguing over the actual, like, mythological, whatever manifestation
of whatever mascot it is?
Like, are you literally, Baxter?
He was taking this too far.
I'm just literally talking about Baxter fighting orbit, right?
I'm talking about mascot versus mascot, not the man inside, just the literal mascot themselves as a costume character, fighting other mascots and other costume characters, Jesse.
I mean, this is a simple math.
And the fact is that when you break it down, if we did the Steiner math, you have 73 and a third chance of beating Baxter or not beating Baxter.
Baxter is going to kick your butt is what I'm saying.
Baxter is going to beat all other mascots.
There is no other mascot that is actually designed Jesse to fight, to to attack prey and to survive in the wild or, you know, against other animals than Baxter.
Like, show me one.
Show me one mascot that could beat Baxter in a fight.
Baxter does.
His persona is just different from that of most mascots.
He's not quite as fluffy and lovable as as like a Philly fanatic or a blueprint.
might be like baxter's a little bit more of a vicious creature right right that's kind of the way he comes
across yes he'll still smile you know with with your three-year-olds or whatever but but when he's out in
the wild and you picture him in a fighting situation like he's not he's not playing nice in that
context so no yeah i'm really just disappointed that uh that that talking baseball account was in
fact fake and uh the blooper versus philicatic thing is not happening because now i'm like kind of
invested in what that would look like. Jesse, it's so in my wheelhouse. It's mascots. It's baseball.
It's dudes and costumes. And it's kind of pro wrestling adjacent. Like this is definitely,
if it's not happening, it's something I need to make happen. Maybe I can be the commissioner of this
league. I don't know, but what do you got? I brought up the freeze. I was like, but then we had this
whole other philosophical conversation about whether the freeze was actually a mascot or not.
What do you got? I was going to ask you, if you were to have like a
mascot promotion where they boxed and you were like the chairman commissioner of it who would be
your champion like who would you start day one as your champion would you have like like an open
competition no yeah i mean maybe you have a tournament of some sorts right to name a champion i would put
it on orbit because i think orbit's just such a heel orbit himself is such a bad guy uh he's so
he's he's he's such a he's such a little scamp that i think he would he the chase would be on the
baby faces like Baxter.
You very much do not like Wally
from Boston Red Sox.
What a loser that one.
Yeah, he hates Wally.
The guy lives in a wall.
There's a mystery there.
But yeah.
People are asking if we're getting healthily for the closer
in the comments.
Jesse, any possibility
in your head that the Diamondbacks make some sort of
crazy move? Or do they just ride with Shelby Miller
for now and see how he does?
I think no matter
what they might want,
want to do, the reality is that the Cardinals are just not going to trade Ryan Helsley this early.
Too much. Too much. And if they did, the cost would have to be enormous. Like, you'd have to give
everything. Yeah, you'd have to like totally blow away the Cardinals at this point for them to really
entertain that. I know people in our comment section recently have been like, oh, well, just give them
Gino and give them, you know, like Gino's, I mean, you know, I'm not saying Gino doesn't have any
trade value, but he doesn't really have any trade value for a team like the Cardinals who,
you know, if they're trading Ryan Helsley, they're probably not expecting to contend and would
not want a third baseman on an expiring contract when they already also have Nolan Aronado.
It was like they got that kind of covered already for sure.
We're actually trying to get off of that still.
I think that Helsley could be an option.
I mean, it makes all the sense in the world for the Cardinals to trade him before the deadline if
they're if they're not going to contend, which it certainly doesn't look like they are so far.
But, you know, the trade market doesn't tend to heat up until at least like middle of June.
So I think the Diamondbacks might just have to try to get by with what they have for the time being.
