It's y'all season, baby. Welcome in to another pregame edition of the PHNXD Backs podcast. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as a man that used to have a voice, but might not have one after tonight's show, depending on how things go. This fan's the hot tag. That's why he's here to take over for me when I am too weak to battle on. It's the one and only Patrick Lyons. Big game tonight, Patrick.

Skiy to you, Patrick. Excuse me. It's a huge one. Patty Plantain. Yeah, absolutely. Zach Gallen on the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And the job ain't done. And when I say that, I mean, we have said quite a bit about this game is a must win.

That game's a must win. It's really hard not to call game five a must win because it's pretty difficult to go back to Philadelphia, being down a game and play in that environment, expecting to come out of this on top. So the Diamondbacks need to get to the World Series. Big part of that is winning tonight's game. Alec Thomas, we're still high on that home run from last night. I've watched it 768 times. I know every detail of it.

I know which foot he let off with when he started running every single thing. Because my God, what a moment that was. Jesse and I had a conversation last night. But I have to ask this. And I mean, Damon, I'd love for you to chime in too. was this the biggest home run in franchise history? I mean, we have big hits, right? I mean, you can go back to the World Series.

I'm sure there's some big home runs, you know, that added to their leads and such. But this Alec Thomas home runs seemed to be one of, if not the biggest home run in franchise history in the postseason. I mean, it's one of only four pinched home runs by Diamondbacks players. And, you know, the first one's Turner Ward in 1999. I don't know that anybody necessarily cared about that. No offense to turn a word.

But like, this is critical. This is clutch. As Jesse said on Twitter, like, tonight's game, think about this. This is either the last game of the season for the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Arizona Diamondbacks are going to the World Series. It's one of those two things either way.

It's either the saddest thing I've ever heard, but actually not because, man, these guys still deserve to be commended on this season that they've had. But most importantly, this post-stop. season run that they have, or the absolute dream of this team competing in the World Series. And this is the latest they've ever played other than 2001, because unfortunately in 2007, when they were also in the National League Championship Series, they didn't get to Game 5.

So if you're just looking at things as far as how deep this Diamondbacks team has gone in the postseason in 2023, this is the second greatest Arizona Diamondbacks team in franchise history. It really is. Also wild. And the exciting part about that is this is not a team comprised of, to be honest, stars that they brought in from other franchises and moves that they made in order to quickly improve a new franchise. I've talked at length at times about the difference in opinions about this franchise when it first started and how Jerry Colangelo, the genius that he is, knew that if you wanted to get fans hooked on this team, if you wanted to. them to live and die with this team. They needed to be a winner versus the other owners that kind

of again had this fairy tale idea about this franchise being just a thing people go to do in downtown Phoenix when they're there. And Colangelo, due to his experience with the Sun's knew better. Right. And honestly, right now, the difference between that team and this team is that so many components of this team are young. They're just now starting their career. Homegrown. They are homegrown and they are going to be a part of this franchise for years to come. You know, even tonight's starting pitcher, Zach Gallen, we have plenty of time left with, should Zach Gallen just be here until the end of his contract? Hopefully, that's not the case.

Hopefully we see him extended along with everybody else because right now, everybody deserves the credit for where this team's at, including Tori Lavello, who hopefully will hear about his extension sometime in the near future after the playoffs wrap up. That seems like a giving. Yeah. And to your point, what, this year's payroll was like maybe, what, $117 million? 20 plus years ago in 2001, Colangelo paid about $85 million. Hold on.

For that. Hold on. Hold on. Cogs, did you got the beer bat? Bring that by the studio later. We'll talk. I need that beer bat. I might need that for tonight.

But yes. No, I mean, you're, yeah. I mean, you know, everything with this team right now, obviously you could say, It was exciting and, you know, it's all icing on the cake of this season and the fact that these young guys are the ones doing it. Gabriel Moreno, Corbyn Carroll, Brandon Fott. But, I mean, now really they're in a position where all of that, hey, it's nice to be here. Crap is behind them. And they are in a position tonight to take the lead in the NLCS and go back to Philadelphia with the opportunity to just have to win one of those two games and to advance to the World Series.

the offense finally produced in game four. We know Alec Thomas, as we said, was a big part of that. But we also know that the man who is starting the day at DH and batting fifth also contributed. And that's Payvon Smith. We said it last night. Is he going to get a start? We're Craven David. We are absolutely Craven Payvin.

And I mean, I think like this just shows. It doesn't matter who you are right now. If you're contributing to this team, you're earning that time and they're going to put you in the lineup. I think it's a smart move because obviously Pave and Smith already has more hits. then a lot of the guys that have not, you know, have been struggling like, you know, Corbyn and Corbin even, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, no, I think that's, I think that's a good move.

You kind of have to go with them more hot hand. And again, hot is relative because we're talking about two games of Pavin Smith. But if someone is ice cold, you just can't put them up there in those big spots. So you saw it with Moreno going up to the third spot in the lineup, that paid off in both games three and game four. So, I mean, this move could pay off. And you go, wow, he's been on the bench, relegated to a spot where you might not ever see him in a game to hitting fifth in game five

in a critical matchup where if the Diamondbacks win game five teams that win at home to go ahead three two they win the series 62% of the time but if should they lose and the Phillies win here on the road in game five they're going to have a 78.6% chance of going on or rather that's what you know history tells us about a team who's at up three two and going back home for two more games. You don't want that. It's critical. You don't want that.

We've already discussed the success at home that both of these teams have had, but obviously the Phillies have made history with their winning percentage and how good they are at Citizens Bank Park during the postseason. Their incredible fans are a huge part of that. But I think it's just let's calm. Let's calm down. All right. Well, hey, speaking of fans, I know.

I'm just done. I'm sick. I know. I screamed, I screamed go D-backs in the most aggressive way at the kindest, most nice little family of Philadelphia Phillies fans walking in downtown Phoenix. I wanted to say just like fuck the Phillies. You accosted some Phillies fans? I did. I did and I'll do it again and I have no regrets about it.

But that's neither here nor there. Cotel Marte needs to accost some Phillies tonight. That's for sure. We need him to stay locked in because he has been a huge part of this offense. Diamondbacks really need him to continue that historic hitting streak that he's had. And honestly, we do need to see more from Christian Walser. and Corbyn Carroll.

We really need those guys to wake up, not just to have a chance in the season in the series, but even if tonight's game goes their way, they have a big uphill battle to try to go back to Philadelphia and win one of those two games. So far, the home team has held the court, you know, in the series. They have to steal bases tonight if they get on.

They may not get on very much. They're wheeler held the diamond backs in a major way, held them down in game one. They're not going to get a ton of opportunities. Wheeler does not allow a lot of stolen bases. J.T. Real Mutu, for as good as Gabriel Moreno, has been, Real Mutu's got a better, a quicker pop time. So, like, he's even harder to steal against. That being said, you have to take advantage of those things because you might get a walk.

You might hit by pitch. You might get on base with an error. And maybe, just maybe you get a single in one of the next two guys coming up. You're not scoring if you're on first base when there's a single. You can only score from second base. So you're going to have to figure out a way to take one there. You've got to take second off Zach Wheeler at some point. Yeah, no, you're right. And Zach Wheeler was incredibly good for the Phillies.

And there is a rematch tonight on the mound between these two teams. Zach Gallin will be on the bump for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And we just ask once again, will he be our Galentine? We need Zach Gallen to step up and be the Zach Gallen. He's been at home. We've talked excessively about his home road splits. But the man had a 2.47 ERA this season at home with a 1.029 whip. That is versus a 4.42 ERA on the road.

So that was reflected in his, you know, game one start, but credit where credit is due. Not only were, you know, the Phillies hitters red hot in that game, but you got to give credit to Zach Wheeler. He did an excellent job at holding the Diamondbacks, just absolutely handcuffing this team. And this pitching matchup tonight, as you can see in this comparison, is once again, a very, very close matchup between these two cyan candidates for the National League this season. man it's going to be a real battle and you know gallon has to have a real good one here again they're they're relying on him in in such a major way the bullpen you know you have those four guys who went three nights in a row i don't think i think sol frank is probably the only one that you're not going to see but gallon's got to be able to go at least six uh and it'll be very interesting

to see what what tory does once they get to the seventh depending on where his pitch count is uh it's it's going to be down if he if he is able to last six innings. It's going to be a close ball game. Maybe it's one one at that point. And again, it'll be really interesting to see if he goes back out there for the seventh because that bullpen is taxed. I think Ginkle, his pitch count is down really low. See, Wall to start 20 plus in both games three in game four. So, you know, going three days in a row can be precarious. But I think Ginkle can go out there. You might see him out there for the save tonight, depending on how things end up going. You know, maybe you run back Castro again, who was okay. Frias was really great for

his four outs on Friday night. So, there's going to be a little mixing and matching, again, just a little bit, but that kind of mixing and that kind of matching is going to go so much better if Gallen can give them some, like, at least, at minimum, six, seven is really important. That's a lot of pressure for him. It is. But he's a kind of guy that he wants to be in the Saion conversation.

You know, he's got a few more years left until he reaches free agency, but I think he views himself as being one of those top-notch aces, and you really can really separate yourself from the pack of those other aces by having a really great postseason resume. And tonight is a huge opportunity for him in his career to go out there, shove, post, and say, yeah, I'm a guy in the playoffs that teams want me on the bump.

There's a lot of good advice here from people in the chat. Gilbert said, walk Schwerber, let someone else beat you. That can't be said enough. That really can't be said enough. Two down in the lineup is Harper. You're going to walk him too? No. Trade Turner is in between.

No. This lineup is set. The problem is. If you walk Schwabber, then two batters later, you have Bryce Harper walking up there. And are you feeling better about that? Yeah, right now I am. Sauntering. He's sauntering up to the plate.

He's not walking to the plate. He's sauntering. He's becoming the city of Philadelphia. It's the wildest thing ever. It's like he's mutating into it. It's impressive. You know what's crazy is that we'd rather face Trey Turner who's hitting like $4.50 in the post.

In a way, yeah. Either one of the guy who's hitting first or third. He's going to keep it in the ballpark. That's the big difference there versus these other guys that are going to. gonna hit it 500 feet. Do you think Harper had a moment in the last couple years where he woke up, rolled out of bed, wiped a crust from his eyes, and maybe

there was like some green fur on his chest, like he's turning into Philadelphia. He's evolving into the fanatic. You think maybe? Like he has to shave it every single day. It's a secret that he's currently keeping. Maybe. It would not surprise me. It would not surprise me.

It explains the flannels. That can't be true because Garrett Stubbs is actually the Philly Fanatic. I believe in the middle of games between innings. Garrett Stubbs puts on the Philly Fanatic costume and runs around. He's team mascot. He's backup catcher and backup mascot. He's team mascot.

Can you do me a favor? I know he didn't discuss this, Damon, but can you grab me the clip of what Tori said last night? Do we have that anywhere? Yeah, whose diss was better? Do you have that anywhere? Who's this was better? Damans?

I appreciate that. Or Tori Lavello? Yeah. Both of them shots fired. It's just shots fired, absolutely. But really, I think the thing here is that Zach Gallen, I think somebody said in the chat, I believe in Zach Gallen. We believe in Zach Gallen, too.

Again, there is not a more comforting presence for this team. And honestly, with the way Brandon fought pitched the other day, you couldn't ask for a better three pitchers, you know, starting for this team in the next three games, right? But can you imagine Brandon fought potentially having to start in a game seven in Philadelphia as the guy for this team? I mean, we talk about, we talk about legacy moments. My God. my god you might have to make a graphic for brandon fought because he continues to climb the mountain and you go they're down oh two in a must win game in game three absolutely add brandon fought

to that's another step for it's another step four for him to possibly right now absolutely applies for kattel martin's hitting streak uh damon uh if you would if you don't mind would you mind click him that guy that always makes me laugh Stacking those hits up. Stacking those hits up. All right. But yeah, Zach Allen again, just, you know, the guy you want out there. He wasn't great as the season, you know, wound down.

But, I mean, he also still had some really good performances, including a complete game shut out of the Chicago Cubs at home at Wrigley Field. And that's not an easy environment to go into. as a visiting player and pitch. And they were going for the postseason two. So they had a lot on the line. They did. That was to them.

That was a huge. Very much a must win game. The Phillies have good numbers against Gallen. We saw that a little bit on Monday in game one. That feels like a million years ago. It was only Monday. So a couple less center cut fastballs. And I think Zach Allen's going to have a much better night against these Phillies.

All right. Do we, is that ready now, Damon? And then, what did you say about Garrett Stubbs? Let's just, let's just reset the table a little bit. I just wanted to say Garrett Stubbs is the Philly fanatic in the middle of games because he doesn't get at bats. He doesn't get playing time. He's the team mascot. They parade him around like he's, you know, some like jovial little toy that we can hang out with.

And then everybody, apparently all the Phillies fans will die for him. I think, I think Tori kind of agrees with you because he took Garrett Stubbs's comments about swimming and celebrating having a pool party in our pool in our fucking pool very personally here's what to say i think they take things personal they got a chip on their shoulder um i know their backup catcher made a statement about sprinting towards a pool or making a beeline to the pool so um i think they're wearing that a little bit and they're motivated by that externally and they're motivated to be as good as they possibly can internally we are going to have to protect this pool until the day we die folks that's just the way it's going to be um you know why because none of these other

poverty franchises have a pool so the excitement of being able to celebrate in ours is so damn tantalizing isn't it i get it install your own pool uh go put a diving like honestly Milwaukee you have a slide that doesn't empty into a pool what are you guys even doing i still can't get over that but uh again Zach gallon uh Zach wheeler quite the pitching matchup tonight and uh let's hope Zach Wheeler isn't what he was in game one for sure yeah it's going to be It's going to be fun. It's going to be exciting. We'll be here post-game, of course.

Hopefully, we'll get a chance to maybe see Michael Phelps' first pitch. That's pretty cool for Game 5. We kind of talked about that. I think it might have been Wednesday's show. We might have the different possibilities that they had. They were like, yeah, here we go. They're watching. Hey, what's up, Diamondbacks, PR team?

They had, they had some new additions this year that were killer. Since 2009, the Rockies have had one home playoff game and they were not prepared for edible batting gloves or something. Just throw the word edible in front of anything. And people are like, oh,

did you, yeah. Let's go. Yeah. Did you try the new edible sliding myths? Yeah. You're like, oh yeah,

the one that could tell Marte wears. Yeah, but it's edible. I don't know what that is, but if it's available in Section 123 at Sweet Treats, I think a lot of people would get something like that. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you. They also have an apple pie chimichanga, which just sounds like an upscale, maybe McDonald's
