Can he win it and were there other deserving D-backs who got snubbed? We also preview Game 3 of the ALCS between the Blue Jays and our Sea-Backs aka the Mariners, give our coworkers cheese-related nicknames that would make Bryce Miller proud, and ponder whether sports fans missed a real opportunity to hire an actual witch to improve society instead of just giving their baseball team magical powers. Plus, Teoscar Hernandez reportedly skipped a hotel in Milwaukee because it was haunted — prompting us to share a list of all the things that would make us refuse to check in.An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsportsMERCH https://store.allcitynetwork.com/collections/phnx-lockerALLCITY Network, Inc. aka PHNX and PHNX Sports is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the City of PhoenixPHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/ALLCITY — including us here at PHNX — is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for an exciting three-year partnership. Starting point is 00:00:00 Corbyn Carroll is the Arizona Diamondbacks only gold glove finalist, and we're going to talk about if that was the right call and if he actually has a chance to win it. Also, it's spooky season. So we're talking Etsy witches and haunted hotels around here. Don't you go anywhere. We're starting in 30 seconds. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNXD bags podcast live from Studio K. Presented by our friends at Circle K, it is your mayor of PHNX, occasionally known as Derek Montia.
Starting point is 00:00:39 and that brings an abrupt end to our music. That is not a good sign for our show today, for sure. But hey, welcome in, everybody. Glad to have you here. Happy Wednesday. Happy to at least be talking about the Seattle Mariners more today and not the Los Angeles Dodgers and what Yamamoto did last night. My forgiveness, by the way, or my apologies,
Starting point is 00:01:00 I said last night on the last night's postgame show that Yamamoto only went eight innings and discounted the amazing feat that he really achieved there. having a complete game. Once again, those Dodgers are infuriating for sure. I wrote down the Yamamoto was only going eight innings because he was at 97 pitches after eight innings and why the hell would he go out there for a ninth? Well, he did and he was incredible and I am very worried about that baseball team. But of course, welcome it to the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. This show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 in game time. Make sure to use that code of PHNX 365 when you sign up. You get
Starting point is 00:01:35 yourself some bonus bonus bets over there for being a new customer. Over at game time use our code of pH and X you'll get $20 off your already low last minute ticket deals for that website of course i got Shane Diefenbach on the ones and twos today Damon is off and so in lieu of that my dog is here just to bring in the balance of dog ratio without Damon being here now Cosmo yeah well now Shane is also my dog Sean's my dog for sure but Cosmo's running around the office and he's as excited as we are to see game three today for between the Seattle mayor Mariners there and the Blue Jays.
Starting point is 00:02:11 Mariners lead the series 2-0. What's that? Definitely not as excited as you. Yeah, I mean, you are just living in a constant world of worry, and I don't understand why. I mean, Derek, this team hasn't been to the World Series ever. Ever. In ever. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:28 You know? Yeah, for sure. And now they've taken both games in Toronto, and things are going entirely too good for you. There's no way that this can continue to be this positive. But it was a nice game two victory there, winning 10 to 3. I think that's the most important thing is that this offense has been slowly increasing. And of course, now the Toronto Blue Jays aren't in a great position themselves. They face the dawning task of winning three straight games in Seattle to essentially avoid elimination.
Starting point is 00:02:57 And of course, not three altogether, but of course they got to take two out of three there in Seattle. And that's not going to be very easy to do. today on the mound we got a pitching duel between Shane Bieber and George Kirby, aka is it Angry Cheddar today or Sharp Cheddar? Let's hope it's Sharp Cheddar today for sure. Furious George. Oh yeah, Furious George is such a good nickname. And that goes with Angry Cheddar.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Angry Cheddar, Furious George. But after a solid performance there in the ALDS, Kirby looks to continue his momentum. He's done a great job of managing the games and avoiding those big innings, which will once again be crucial against this post. Blue Jay's offense. And then Shane Bieber, the veteran right-hander. He has a strong postseason pedigree here, but he does come off a shaky start, and he'll need to kind of give this team more than what he gave them before.
Starting point is 00:03:48 So offensively, the Mariners, like I said, are rolling, and quite frankly, it's wild to me that they're doing it without Cal Rally. Not to say they're doing it without him, but, you know, again, the 10 to 3 game was really Polanco and Rodriguez having those home runs. plus Josh Naylor flashing his dad's strength and adding, you know, to that as well. But I do do think that George Springer, of course, is going to continue to factor in. And you got to imagine that Vladdy is going to go off here. It's hard to contain him for too long.
Starting point is 00:04:18 You don't got to imagine that. No, there's that. You don't have to imagine anything, Derek. Your brain can just turn off. It can turn into like gray goop and you don't have to imagine anything. Well, I mean, honestly. And stare into the nothing. The one thing about this is, and putting all of your worries and concerns aside,
Starting point is 00:04:32 this doesn't make any sense. Like it really doesn't. Like, but once again, baseball tends to not make any sense. And it's not to say this is any kind of case for a layoff or not a layoff. The Blue Jays weren't even off for that long. But the fact that the Mariners almost never stopped playing baseball, it feels like it really helped them despite the fact that I personally was of the thought process. If you go back and look at one of my tweets, that they were in a tough spot coming into, you know, that first game.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And just the way that they've responded in Toronto. That has been really impressive. The Mariners also just like they didn't play baseball for a week and a half. And then they dropped a game against the tigers and then responded well. So teams react differently. It's all about vibes. Yeah. You know what Gino's going for.
Starting point is 00:05:20 You know what Gino says. Yeah. Gino's there to radiate the vibes. So good vibes. Yeah. He's radiating the vibes from the interstate barely. Mariners money line favorites in this one right now. And the over under is projected.
Starting point is 00:05:32 runs total. I feel like you smash that over on that. That feels like these teams are going to both be a little bit better offensively. Derek, it's in the Witches Park. It is in the Witches Park. That ball does not leave the stadium there. Look, we're going to talk about the Etsy Witch because I've had entirely too many people just straight up not understand what happened with the Etsy Witch.
Starting point is 00:05:56 And I have a lot of things to address with the Etsy Witch, but we need a whole segment for that. but the Etsy Witch was in attendance there at T-Mobile Park and apparently was shown on screen and the Etsy which got a huge round of applause. So that's amazing. Mariners are slight favorites in this one, of course. It feels like the Mariners keep things going and get this taking care of here, at least in game three. But I don't want to say that in front of Shane for sure.
Starting point is 00:06:26 And nothing matters. Shane, I will say this. We got, we did talk about the nicknames. We did talk about the cheese nickname. Yes. That our guy Bryce Miller likes to give everybody out. I love that, that little point that you gave me. And I was thinking about it.
Starting point is 00:06:41 One thing we failed to do when discussing this incredible, I guess, trait, this is, this incredible. I want to call it an ability, an ability to give an uncanny nickname that's based on your persona. That's cheese based, right? Yeah. So I think that we didn't do it for the office. And I think that we should give some of our co-workers cheese nicknames. Go ahead and rip them. I think we should start with Leah just to get this out of the way and ensure that you and I stay out of trouble.
Starting point is 00:07:10 And I think making her goat cheese makes a lot of sense because she's the goat, right? Okay. Canadians are also fan of goat cheese. I'm fairly certain. This might be a stereotype. I think their cheese is cheddar. Okay. But goat is fine.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Let's go with goat. Let's go with goat more as a description of her or not anything to do with. her goat cheese is also awesome. Go cheese is awesome. You know what else is awesome is cream cheese? Mm-hmm. Right? But cream cheese is different, right?
Starting point is 00:07:37 Cream cheese is like a little bit more, you know. Is cream cheese cheese? Is it cheese? I think. Just dairy, I think. Is it just a, this is blowing my mind. Don't tell me that cream cheese is not an actual. A cheese.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Cream cheese and cheese? Okay, it is a cheese. It is a cheese. Thank God, because there's soft cheeses out there. No, I know, I know, I just didn't. I mean, I just don't think of cream cheese is a cheese. Right. But it's like a, it's like a, it's like a, it's like a cheese.
Starting point is 00:07:59 blue-collar cheese, right? It's not out there being fancy. It's not. Yeah, I know. I guess you're right. No, it's a cheese for the blue-collar people. Yeah, it's a cheese for blue-collar people. The cheese itself is an inherently blue-collar. That's why Espo has to be cream cheese. He's a man of the people. He's a man of the people. It's a blue-collar man
Starting point is 00:08:15 for the people by the people. Yeah, a lot of variety in cream cheese as well. That's probably a lot of variety. See, I went with a different one for you. See, I'm thinking because you are an insanely different person, but you're also incredibly high quality person. Riccada cheese.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Ricotta cheese, again, the cheese you don't think of when you think of cheese. Yeah, I saw this on the rundown and I didn't really like it, or nor did I agree with it. But I like the nickname, ricotta, just like that's a nickname.
Starting point is 00:08:42 I don't. It sounds like I'm an ass. Does it? Yeah. Is it sound pretentious? Yeah. Like pretentious? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:49 What about Rockford? That sounds pretentious, right? Yeah. Yeah, that's Max. Yeah. It's a complicated cheese. There's a lot of rules. To make a cheese rock for cheese?
Starting point is 00:08:58 Can I be feta cheese? You can be feta cheese. Okay. I like that. Feta cheese is my favorite. It's also Bryce Miller's favorite cheese. Well, has he given anybody?
Starting point is 00:09:06 Yeah, he gave everybody the, on the Fox broadcast panel of cheeses because they asked him what cheese we are and he said, you guys are all fed up because that's my favorite. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. I feel like Damon's queso dip.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Why? Well, okay, so first of all, spicy. Yeah. Damon's spicy. And you're just like hot. in general. Yeah. And in general,
Starting point is 00:09:28 he involves a lot of people in his, like, discussions, right? So it's like a welcoming, like, everybody get in on this. When you start eating queso,
Starting point is 00:09:34 it's hard to stop. And like, if you engage with Damon, he will not, it's so hard to stop. He won't leave you alone. Yeah, no, you can't stop.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Once you've started, you absolutely can't stop. You can't. All right. Well, Eric's American cheese. I don't, I feel like that's calling him boring,
Starting point is 00:09:50 isn't it? Is that Eric's just American cheese? I'm, I'm not, you're staying out of it. Yeah. You're staying out of it. All right.
Starting point is 00:09:56 White cheddar works too, but I'm not like that. You're staying out of it. White cheddar's incredible. White cheddar's incredible. Well, Shane, overall here, though, I know that, again, you don't want to, you're not going to say anything positive. There's no way you can as a Mariners fan. But as somebody that's adopted this team, I feel like the Mariners are just really in a great position. Wu, returning to the roster feels like, you know, a huge, you know.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Yeah, he'll be the game one starting in the World Series. It'll be great. I just overall You won't need them for game five Well again And you also just have somebody That's that good coming off of A significant rest
Starting point is 00:10:33 You don't know what he's Is he the hottest pitcher in baseball? You you labeled him as the hottest pitcher in baseball But not in the way that mostly would be used And you mean he is the most attractive Pitcher in baseball He's hard to look at because of how attractive he is You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:10:47 It's funny because last year He didn't have he didn't grow his hair out And he didn't have like any facial hair and now he's just like sex icon mound guy. It's just awesome. He's got that certain level of I don't care about what I look like. If you're not good, you're not hot. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:11:05 That's true. Well, yeah. Who's the hottest baseball player that's not good? On the Diamondbacks, Chuck McCartee. Wow. That was nasty. Was that mean? Is Drake Jameson bad?
Starting point is 00:11:22 I mean, he's got a 15 ERA right. now in Arizona football league, but, yeah. Oh, I mean, I don't think he's bad. He's not bad, but. But you think Jake McCarthy's bad? No, no. No. Maybe we should move on this topic.
Starting point is 00:11:35 I guess, yeah, I'm going to get myself in trouble again. I'm sorry. No, you should be. You should be sorry, but you shouldn't apologize for this Mariners team because, like you said, this really is a chance for a team that's never been to the World Series to finally, you know, and quite frankly, the Mariners have been good for a couple of years now. on Friday, we're going to take a look like we did with the Brewers at how the Mariners kind of came together and if the Diamondbacks can replicate some of their success. But it's not a formula that, you know, you can necessarily follow. It's it's a little dash of, you know, of homegrown talent. It's it's a dash of having, you know, a guy become an absolute superstar as part of your roster, the emergence of Cal Rally, quite frankly, up till now has not been what he was this season. Like he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, good player. He hit some home runs. He hit like around 30, but he was never this, what he is
Starting point is 00:12:30 this season for this team. So I mean, again, this is like, this is the payoff for a Mariners team that was patient with their roster. But at the same time, went out and recognized that this season was a year, was a year that this team could contend. And they made some big trades, especially with this Diamondbacks team, to bolster that roster and try to make them better. And boy, did some of those pieces really work out for them, including the way that Josh Naylor has been embraced and beloved by that team and that fan base. Like, Jay-Naylor, I mean, Gino already was a part of that franchise. It's crazy. Like, I defended the fact that people said he was miserable here.
Starting point is 00:13:12 And I don't really know if he was miserable here. I can't, I can't say that. I can't say he was in Cleveland. I don't think he was. But you're right, though. Like, there's a different glow to him. Obviously, you know, being a new dad is part of that as well. but baby glove but you know this this season i think that you know the the things he was doing
Starting point is 00:13:30 becoming the the on-base thief that he became and just everything that he became for that roster was a huge you know addition to that team and this is a guy that's on an expiring contract they gave up quite a bit for him and gino who both could essentially be free agents and go somewhere else at the end of the year but man this this team would not be where they're at without josh nailer Gino, meanwhile, a little bit of a disappointment for that team. And again, has been also here through the playoffs. He's struggled. But when you bring the vibes that you bring to the team, do you need to be good?
Starting point is 00:14:01 No. No, Gino's just out there radiating good vibes and helping this team win. Him and the Etsy Witch, those are the two supernatural forces here at work that have propelled the Mariners to have a 2-0 lead over the Blue Jays and the LCS. Hopefully they can keep this magic rolling and get the job done to make their first World Series appearance. It's at this point, according to Google trends, America is pulling for the Seattle Mariners. Not just this podcast, not just that guy that's been doing it for entirely too long. And he's not ready to welcome too many people on the bandway. So is Toronto.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Toronto, too, right? The city of Toronto is pulling for the Mariners, apparently. That's what I'm hearing. That's, well, I mean. The country of Canada. I heard you turn Leah. Who's Becistan as well. I heard Leah is a Mariners band now.
Starting point is 00:14:44 No, you know what? It's so funny about this, she actually turned her back on me. She promised me that if they played, this is not a joke. She promised me that if they played in the playoffs, she would cheer for the marriage because it meant more to me. Yeah, I knew this was going to be problematic. And that rat. Yeah. Oh, yeah, no.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I bet she was out there in a Kurt jersey. And you know what? You know why I'm a great person? Because I've just shut my damn mouth there. I could be dancing. You could be. You could be. But you're humble.
Starting point is 00:15:19 You're humble. You stay home. Also, they're still going to lose this series. So I can't really dance yet. There it is. There it is. Keep it all in perspective, my man. Keep it all in perspective. Well, we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break. We are going to talk about Corbyn Carroll being the Arizona Diamondbacks sole gold glove finalist. We are going to question if he can win.
Starting point is 00:15:37 And we're going to question if that was the right caller if anybody got snubbed. We're going to do that on the other side of this break. Well, we patiently waited today as Rawlings, the good folks at Rawlings, we love their gloves, we love their products. They rolled out their announcements today about the finalists for the Gold Glob Award, and we waited, and we waited, and we waited.
Starting point is 00:18:33 We waited just to see one Arizona Diamondback name on the list. We were fairly sure we were going to see Corby and Carroll, but as each individual position player, especially for the infield, was shown and the finalists were named, it became painfully clear that we weren't going to see very many diamondbacks on this list. And in fact, Corbyn Carroll did end up being the only finalist for the finalist for the Gold Glove Award. Carol is in there in the mix with Sal Freelik
Starting point is 00:19:01 and Fernando Tatis Jr. for Rightfield. Those are the three finalists for the Gold Glove Award. Of course, Corbin had himself an incredible year defensively. He had nine outs above average this year in Right Field, 10 total. He had eight defensive runs saved, and his range, according to baseball, Savant, was in the 98th percentile. His arm strength also has really picked up over the last two seasons.
Starting point is 00:19:26 seasons, his arm strength rated in the 62nd percentile. So still not a superior arm strength, but again, above average for sure for Corbyn. Plus, his fielding run value was seven in 2025. So Corbyn really flashed some good defensive metrics out there in right field, and you just felt like he took a big step forward as far as, you know, his defensive play. He became a real threat to not run on out there in right field. That was something that was incredible to see. and that once again, as we've discussed in the past, was about his improved technique, basically. I mean, you can't go into the gym and work your arm out
Starting point is 00:20:03 to increase your arm strength. A lot of it comes with technique and figuring out ways to get a better launch angle, essentially, on the ball, and to increase that velocity. But, yeah, I mean, both of these guys, and the true question here is, is that can Corbyn Carroll win it? Feels like it's a little bit stacked against him.
Starting point is 00:20:22 Tatis Jr. currently has the edge in the clean-cut traditional metrics. He has 15 defensive runs saved and eight outs above average in right field. So those are significant right there with Corby and Carroll, but the defensive run saved, obviously almost double of what Corby and Carroll had.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Some of Corbyn Carroll's case is mostly on somewhat of the projected advance metrics. And again, the percentile claims, the 98th percentile for range, things like that. Also outs above average, arm value fielding run value and his reliability. He does not have many errors out there in right field. But the errors thing gives him a little bit of an edge. His speed gives him a bit of an edge. But again, the amount of time he's played in right field, you know, they moved him around
Starting point is 00:21:11 quite a bit last season in the outfield. So sample size impacts it. And defensive valuation, again, it just may limit how much weight he gets overall. Plus, as stupid as it is, it's kind of like MVP where the Padres and the Brewers both made the playoffs, and it's hard for that not to deep down inside potentially impact this if this is a close race. Freelick is the wild card here. Candice Montoya says Freelick has a better defense, doesn't he? I mean, Freelick, again, he was really good in right field for the Brewers. So I don't love Corby Carroll's chances, but it's good to have him at least as a representative out there. I think, you know, Corbin at least deserves this acknowledgement,
Starting point is 00:21:58 if not being considered heavily for the award. He's a great defender, though. And I think that he is a big reason why the Diamondbacks won quite a few of those games down the stretch, not just with his bat, but with his defense. The question here is, were any of his teammates snubbed? And it's hard to say that. I mean, maybe Geraldo Pardomo, but that's probably it. And even then, it's hard to make a strong case for Pardombo.
Starting point is 00:22:23 to win the award even if he was a finalist. So I don't know if this is just loser talk because we only have one nominee, but does it matter to be a finalist but to not win the award? I don't know. I mean, hopefully Corby and Carol has a better chance than I'm giving him credit for,
Starting point is 00:22:42 but it would be hard to imagine Perdomo winning it over the other short stops there that were nominated, right? Perdomo had five outs above the average three defensive runs saved, but he had a lot of errors last. year and he made, you know, some defensive mistakes. Honorable mention would definitely go to Blaze Alexander because if Blaze Alexander played a full season at third base, he would 100% not only be a gold glove finalist, but he would be probably the winner. I mean, I believe
Starting point is 00:23:10 in the short sample size that he had, I think Blaze had seven defensive runs saved, and that was in the smallest sample size pretty much for anybody you can imagine on the Diamondbacks team that would be considered a success at their position. So I can't sit there and say that the players were snubbed. But, you know, this is one of those situations where it doesn't feel great. Mariners only had one guy on there as far as our C-backs are concerned. Julio Rodriguez was the only finalist there, right? Yeah, and it's insane.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Should he be on that list? Yeah, the only person. oh, I don't know, maybe the platinum glove winner. Yeah. Howie? Who didn't have a pass ball in the regular season? Yeah. Oh, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Maybe him. Maybe that guy. I don't know. He was pretty good back there, right? I don't understand what's going on sometimes with these nominations. But what do I know? What do I know? At the end of the day, again, this is more about the player recognition and doesn't do much for the team.
Starting point is 00:24:15 But I still love seeing, you know, the dimebacks. I think that this is an indication of, how the Diamondbacks identity has changed, because in the past, we've seen multiple snakes on this list year after year. So even if they didn't win it, they still ended up as finalists because the Diamondbacks typically had one of the best defenses in the lead. Right now, their defense is mediocre, mid. I mean, it was much better at the end of the year, but right there, there was a stretch, you know, where obviously it was very bad early, kind of regressed to the median, I guess, with how much better it got. but still their end of year numbers still don't put them much more above 10th or 11th.
Starting point is 00:24:54 What are you looking at me for? Oh, he's in, what? Can you just read that comment for me? Oh, the one from El Gairo that says rally is overrated. I know. I know. I'm sure he's talking about the city, rally north Carolina. That's, yes, that's definitely the case.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Honestly, I think it's probably adequately rated. Like, I don't really good people. I actually like it a little bit. Did you really? All right. I don't know, but he's definitely not talking about Cal. Definitely not talking about our guy Cal for sure. That would be crazy if he was.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Do you put, I mean, again, that's definitely something that touches is sensitive for you, Shane. But, I mean, do you put a whole lot of value in this, especially considering it means nothing to me. Okay, right? I mean, it's to me, honestly, and I know this sounds callous, but it's like, great, you want an award that's going to make you cost more to keep you on our team. Like you just added to your resume. and your pedigree, that essentially allows you to charge teams more for your services.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Not to say players don't deserve that, but overall, it's like, ah, I, like, it's like when Zach Gallen missed out on the Cy Young, but he was close. I was like, we're trying to resign this guy, and that would have made it impossible. But, yeah, El Gairo, not serious. He just trolled you. And that makes a lot. He was talking about Raleigh, North Carolina, for sure. But, yeah, I mean, yeah, especially when you guys are in the position,
Starting point is 00:26:19 that you're in. This is more for like teams like the diamondbacks that need kind of a pick me up. That's why I feel like like, come on, give me, give us something here. For people like you need a topic. Yeah, I need a topic. And the topic is that we only have one in there. But a very deserving one in Corby and Carroll, it's just, you know, again, if you're talking about what they look at, which is these metrics, it's hard to make much of a case for Corby and Carroll to win it over the other two guys that he's up against. So I have a hard time. seeing that be the case. But again, this is, this is fine with me. I just like the fact that Corbyn Carroll was recognized. And if we didn't have one gold glove finalist, then I would have been
Starting point is 00:27:01 calling up Killer X and talking about how can we, how can we get on board with this fire Tory thing? How can we get everyone on board? But we're okay, Rex. We got, we got one. So we're going to be rational today. But we're going to take a quick break. And we're going to get to the big topics of today. And the biggest topic of today was spending $16 on an Etsy which the best $16 ever spent in the history of mankind. It's going to be hard to argue otherwise. We're going to do that on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere?

It's about the halfway point and I need to just make sure My dog is okay Shane My dog is running around terrorizing the office right now
Starting point is 00:30:00 I have no clue if he's even still in here Or if he just headed out got on the elevator and went down to the ground floor But I'm very It's it's just you know It's what I worry about all the time I worry about my dogs when I'm home I don't know if you guys wear this Candice wants to see him
Starting point is 00:30:19 I would love to bring him on camera, but his snorting and his panting is going to completely take over this place altogether. So we'll see. We'll get him on here before the show ends. But we really do got to crack down on something that I've been getting a lot of questions about. On the show, we have been discussing the Etsy witch that has given Seattle magical powers and that I've had a lot of people because we've just kind of glossed over it overall. we have for the most part just kind of discuss the Etsy Witch like everybody knows what the Etsy Witch is. And I'll tell you right now, for those of you that may not know, the Etsy Witch was the best $16 ever spent in the history of mankind. For those of you that might not know the backstory to this, there was an Etsy seller who was a witch who went by the name of Spall, goes by the name of Spell by Luna.
Starting point is 00:31:12 She was paid by a fan named Steve Blackburn, $16 to cast a spell to help the Seattle Mariners, turn their season around. The request went viral after the Mariners began. An impressive winning streak, I think, underestimates what we're talking about here. The Mariners subsequently went on a significant winning streak. The Mariners went into first place in their division during this winning streak. The Mariners ended the Rangers season, essentially, and sent the Houston Astros away. They, Shane, was it 10 losses? 78 runs scored, 29 runs allowed?
Starting point is 00:31:54 Something like that. More importantly. A plus 49 run differential? Yeah. More importantly, it was like 18 of 19 or something like that after. Yeah, it's just insane. Basically, this fan became frustrated because the team was starting to lose and slip out of the divisional race. And he paid $16 to this Etsy witch to quote unquote, cast a spell to un F word the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:32:20 I used to be able to say that word all the time on the show, but you get where we're going with that. The seller spelled by Luna, confirmed the ritual was complete. She called that, she said it was full of beautiful energies and told Blackburn to stay positive
Starting point is 00:32:33 and for the fan base to accept the manifestation that she created. And the manifestation led the Mariners not only did to win their division and go on to the playoffs, but also to become an unstoppable force. here in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:32:47 The story gained widespread attention with many fans and the team crediting the Etsy Witch. Like I said earlier, she was at a game and they put her on the big screen and there was an eruption. Blackburn was inundated himself with requests of people
Starting point is 00:33:04 that wanted to pay him for his good deed for his services and he basically directed people who wanted to thank him to donate the money to the Trevor project instead of sending him money. meanwhile, Spell by Luna had to close her Etsy shop and it is no longer active. Why? There's a, okay, so the reason why is because sports fans are maniacs.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Sports fans are maniacs. And the minute that this went from being, I feel like, an innocent joke from just being just being like something that brought this team a little good luck to the point of people believing this woman who obviously does have powers, I can only imagine how flooded she was with requests. I can only imagine how much people wanted to pay her, not just to uncurse their team, but to also fix their lives.
Starting point is 00:34:06 And that's another question. We could go on a whole other rant, Shane. We paid $16 to fix the Mariners. Were there not other things in life that we could, have paid a woman that had these kind of powers to fix instead of a baseball team? Are you saying that's not the most important thing? Look, I'm not saying it's not the most important thing, but I'm saying that- Shut up, Derek.
Starting point is 00:34:25 Yeah, we could have homelessness, world hunger, I mean, maybe someone contacted her. Baseball. Maybe she's the one that ended the conflict in the Middle East. I don't know, but these are more, these are important things, Shane, and we might have squandered, squandered some powers. And more importantly, I'm furious that are Etsy shop. is no longer active. So Derek.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Because I would have paid this money, this woman, every dime I has $16? You're being naive. Because when something good happens, it's usually at the cost of something else. Sure. You know? Yeah. So the Mariners success, we don't know what it caused, but there's something equally as from... You're talking about the ripple effect, aren't you?
Starting point is 00:35:12 No, not the ripple effect. Yeah, like, it's basically it's got to be an exchange of power. Right. So, that show carnival. For every 19 out of 20 games, they won, there's some team in the fall league. It's just getting drunk. But you see, that's the problem, though, is it's not just a team in the fall league because. No, it's got to be more.
Starting point is 00:35:33 It's got to be an equal power. Then maybe a team in the fall league has lost 100 straight games now. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe the Mariners were somehow connected to the Cardinals, and they just took every little bit of the. Arizona. Maybe that's what happened in that game that they lost two Titans. For what?
Starting point is 00:35:51 To uncurse the state of Arizona sports. Was this just a random Etsy Witch? Hey. What was her qualifications? We have an Etsy Witch that obviously her powers work. She was unreachable. I know. That's what I'm upset about.
Starting point is 00:36:05 In the reply, she put the word alignment. Stop it. So you have to think that that helped. Yeah. No, a thousand percent. Green is out for 10 days, by the way. So I found your dog. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:19 We have an update on your dog. If you want to roll that video, Emily. Is he okay? You tell me. Oh, yeah, there he is. Oh, no. Oh, no. And what is that?
Starting point is 00:36:31 Oh, no. Oh, no. I want to go back to the main camera real fast. So you saw something briefly on his screen. Yeah. It was kind of horrifying. Yeah, it was terrible. Can we get a closer look at it?
Starting point is 00:36:43 Let's go see what that looks. It's David dog. Yeah, there he is. Oh, we miss them. We miss them. See, I told you we would bring in a replacement dog when Damon isn't here. So it's an amalgam of. Oh, that's terrifying.
Starting point is 00:36:56 That is terrifying yet well done. Really well done. Damo. Damo? Yeah. Damo or Cosmo? Yeah. Cosmon.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Yeah, I like Cosmon. That's for sure. We're all Cosmon's dogs. Bark, bark. Yeah, that's terrifying. Almost as terrifying as the idea of, that actual witches in the Pacific Northwest exist and can help these sports teams
Starting point is 00:37:18 when like they've had the power to do this the whole time and they've just been choosing not to? That's another thing that we really need to get into. Yeah, what happened with the Sonics, man? Right. Yeah, like you couldn't get Seattle, you couldn't get their team back? Oh, and then they have to watch them win in Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:37:34 That's gross. We do have a new category, though, I think that we should address because people in baseball love statistics, Shane. They love fake statistics, imaginary ones. It's like, oh, this is what the ball should have done. So we're going to call it, you know, projected stats. No, we're not doing that.
Starting point is 00:37:51 But we're doing which is above replacement. Okay. That's what we're doing. The witch's replacement amount here. Because if you calculate how they improve this team, there was a 29.4% increase in win rate. So when you take the way that the Mariners were constructed, and this is going to sound a little bit like Steiner Math from TNA,
Starting point is 00:38:10 so excuse me if it does. But you've got to take the Mariners. They're constructed. They were constructed to win 54% of their games. That was what their trajectory was on board for. Do you know about 54? What's that? Do you know what the 54% is?
Starting point is 00:38:24 Do you know about that meme? Yeah. In Mariners fandom? Yeah, is that it? The 54% is like the number that the Poto in the front office has always said and they win 54% of it. Oh, yeah. That might be part of it.
Starting point is 00:38:39 So that might just be the Seattle fan base, factoring in 54 as like the baseline. right um but the Etsy which overall in the time that she was a part of this team's collective improvement over the regular season she was worth win a 4.6 war uh you can call it wins above replacement but we're calling it which is above replacement um if you project that over 162 games season 48 uh what's that 48 48 which is above replacement actually it's a 74.5 2 which is above replacement oh my god so a team that would be blessed with a witch to be a part of their team like this would essentially go from potentially like a 48 win team to like a 122 win team right yeah do you think that there's a chance that the
Starting point is 00:39:27 witch is like parasitical is that a word that it may turn into a parasite and latch on to this team after it helps them like in paranormal activity okay well we've talked about how in general we feel like randy johnson coming out of the bullpen uh in the World Series, cursed this team forever with bad bullpins. And it wasn't about who they beat. No, it wasn't, maybe a little bit about who they beat, but also. The Mariners did the right thing right here. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:53 They laid down. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it might have been, it might have been a good year to do so. But also, it just feels like, you know, we sacrificed. And at the time, you know, if someone comes to you with a, with an offer like that, right? Like, you know, a Faustian deal. And they're like, hey, here, sign the dotted line.
Starting point is 00:40:11 We're going to ensure you that you take this one home. It's going to be in seven. But Randy Johnson's going to come out of the pen and he's going to be magical. And you're like, what's it going to cost? And they're like, everything. And you're like, here, I'll sign it. I don't care. Good night.
Starting point is 00:40:23 Yeah, good night. I'll take it. Maybe the deal was brokered in Seattle at the conception of the franchise. Yeah. And they're like, well, win the World Series in 2025. But you got to be the worst franchise in sports for until then. And you'll move twice. It'll be horrible.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Yeah. You know what is funny. Again, another thing that is reminiscent of me of the Brewer's Mariner's situation there with like the Burrers being the pilots and then leaving after one season is that the Diamondbacks experienced something like that in a way. They had their first season and everything was kind of like, okay, this is fine. And then they had such a drop off in season ticket holders that they were like, we're screwed. And that's when would allow Jerry Colangelo to be like, yeah, this town likes a winner. Like they're not going to wait 10 years for you guys to build something here.
Starting point is 00:41:12 And they pivoted and they made all sorts of crazy trades. And next thing you know, they won in their third year of existence, right? But like the reason why is because much like that pilot situation after that first season, they're like, this is not working in Seattle. We need to go somewhere else. And like it's just crazy now because I will credit Mariners fans for being some of the best fans that I know, honestly. I think it was more so to do with the stadium that couldn't house school. Oh, that's.
Starting point is 00:41:42 too. Working bathrooms. Well, don't forget, the Tampa Bay Rays built their stadium to just steal one of those
Starting point is 00:41:48 baseball teams away and it's set forever out there. One quick thing before we move on from the city of Seattle. Lee and I were talking last night,
Starting point is 00:41:59 and she thinks that the Cien Tower is cooler than the space station. And I think that's a little ridiculous. She thinks, no. No.
Starting point is 00:42:12 No. First, let's just take the names. Brandon Tower, the space needle. Yeah. Not to mention that, but the space needle literally, it casts a shadow down on climate bludge. What, climate pedgerina, right? It's right there.
Starting point is 00:42:28 Yeah. I mean, the CN Tower is like literally right next to Roger Center. I know. It's actually really cool in some of the pictures. I saw a game there over the summer. I think it was really cool. But it's hard to argue against that and the hotel also being in the... stadium.
Starting point is 00:42:43 I know. We weren't talking about the ballparks. Okay. We're talking about the actual stuff. One thing I will say, the C-Nower is three times the height of the space needle, so it hasn't been fair. But the architecture is nowhere near. I feel like you've done nothing but make a case against your case.
Starting point is 00:42:59 Like you have argued against the space needle this entire time, besides the name being cooler. The space needle looks cooler in the skyline. All right, well, we're going to take a quick break. Actually, we're not. We're just going to remind you guys real quickly. And we got more spooky stuff to talk about because Teosca Hernandez will not stay in a haunted hotel. And that's crazy because I drove three and a half hours just to stay in a haunted hotel. But if you want to join us for some fun, you've got to join the PHNX Cardinals crew this weekend on October 19th at 11 a.m.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Before the Cardinals take on the Green Bay Packers, we're going to have an 11 a.m. Pre-game tailgate out at Chicken and Pickle and Glendale before the Cardinals take on the pack. We'll have our PHNX Cardinals live on site for pregame half-time. and post-game shows. Plus, our friends at Rallyhouse will be giving away $8.50 gift cards to fans and attendants. So head on over to go phynx.com slash events to RSVP for this free event.
Starting point is 00:43:55 Come on out. We're going to have a great time. Having a great time this weekend in Glendale, except for the fact that part of my weekend is doing a yard sale, which I am not looking forward to, very much not looking forward to. But one thing I was looking forward to for a very long time
Starting point is 00:44:09 was this trip to Bisbee, Arizona that I planned. Part of the reason why it was my 16th wedding anniversary, but it was also because my daughter wanted to do something spooky, and she found out that Arizona has a lot of towns that are, like, you know, specialize in whatever you want to say, a paranormal activity, if you will. In fact, my favorite part of staying at this hotel we stayed at, which was called the Hotel Lomor, was that when I contacted them,
Starting point is 00:44:37 and I had a conversation with the woman at the front desk, I expressed to her that my daughter, wanted to stay in a place where there were ghosts. And I kind of said it jokingly. And I was like, is the hotel actually haunted? She was like, oh, I've only had two paranormal experiences my time working here, but that kind of made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It also did not discourage me from going and staying in this hotel. It was haunted by a cat. It was awesome. And it was a great experience. We had a great time. In fact, at one point, we actually locked our 14-year-old daughter in the hotel room because she wanted to stay there and went downstairs.
Starting point is 00:45:11 And again, she did not freak out by staying in hotel room, one without TV, and counted by a ghost cat. But Dodgers Outfield, and this is the reason I bring all of this up, Teosker Hernandez, opted out of staying at Milwaukee's iconic and historic Fister Hotel, which is rumored to be haunted. And this was during the NLCS. This was due to his wife's concerns, allegedly, says Teos. does not take any accountability here himself. But he said even though he doesn't believe in Ghost, his wife urged him to switch accommodations after hearing stories
Starting point is 00:45:49 from other players' wives about eerie occurrences like flickering lights and unexplained noises. This drives me nuts. This was the entire, again, this was the entire reason. I didn't get flickering lights one time, Shane. I would have killed for flickering lights, even if it was part of a show. I don't care. And you didn't stay there? Oh man, I don't get it. Like I said, that's the entire reason I went to Bisbee, Arizona. And a hotel being haunted is a feature. There's never a time where you tell me that a hotel is haunted and that's going to make me cancel my reservation or cause me not to stay in a hotel. There are plenty of reasons. There are plenty of things that I could find out. Like murder in a room, yes, yes. I don't want to stay in a murder room. All right. And I don't want to stay in a murder room. All right. And I don't want to. to find that out after I've been sleeping in the murder room. All right. That's probably number one on
Starting point is 00:46:44 my list. I mean, it's probably not even very rational. That might be right up there with not staying in a haunted hotel, but I don't want to stay in a hotel room that a murder is a curse. I also don't want to stay in a gross hotel room, just gross. You know what I mean. I don't feel like I have to give you details about it. Smells are included in a hotel room being gross. So yeah, like that's, that's again, that's something that will cause me to leave a hotel. I don't know if there's a lot of things. I mean, again, grossness is going to, most things are going to involve grossness. It's going to be gross.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Bugs, rodents, that's all gross. Smells gross. Another thing that will definitely prevent me from staying in a hotel is, or checking out early, and this is the old man in me, is loud noises. I do not like loud noises. I do not like when a hotel is loud. and quite frankly, that is something that will make me leave a hotel at 2 o'clock in the morning. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:47:44 But I will say that there are no, never a time where a hotel being haunted is going to, in any way, shape, or form discourage me from staying at it. Like I said, that's a feature. Candice in the chat says, Jerome, I hear, is better for ghost tours and stays. And I also don't think Jerome is three and a half hours away. So that was part of the reason that Bisbee was a little bit not ideal. But it was a beautiful town. And we had an absolutely great time there. And now there's, let's see, there's talk about Jeffrey Dahmer in the chat.
Starting point is 00:48:21 And I think we're just going to maybe move on. But yeah, there are, Deborah, several towns in Arizona that are very haunted for sure. But another reason why I wouldn't stay in a lot of, a hotel and almost caused me to be weirded out by this haunted hotel we were saying in, no TV to watch sports. That's actually problematic for me. That's something that will cause me to not stay in a hotel room. But yeah, let's see.
Starting point is 00:48:49 2 BMC says Hotel Congress and Tucson is rumored as haunted. Yeah, I mean, Southern Arizona, it's filled with ghosts. That's the way it is. If Damon was in here, you'd probably list off a long line of things. that are haunted in Tucson, and then he would somehow get it back to me. But to ask Hernandez, I mean, I think the biggest thing here is throwing his wife, as some of you have addressed under the bus, for not being the reason not to stay there, right? I mean, I know how baseball players are.
Starting point is 00:49:20 They tend to be very honest and open, so I don't feel like this was a deliberate thing. I just feel like it was chit-chat and talking about the reason why he checked out of his hotel in Milwaukee and went to a different one. but I'm pretty sure my wife would get me for this one. I'm pretty sure my wife would not let this one pass for me. Even if it was factual, even if it was factual, you got to toilabolo this one. You got to fall on the sword for your wife and just take it. Take it on this one.
Starting point is 00:49:49 Again, I just gave you five reasons to Oscar that you could have used. And Shane, who exited this room, would tell you he is the first person to tell you. This is why he's no longer a Seattle Mariner for sure. But speaking of guys that are former players, we do have to address one former Arizona Diamondback calling it a career. Former Arizona Diamondback, Chris Owings announced his retirement from the game on Instagram this week. And honestly, Chris Owings was part of a really fun run, a really fun time here when this team was, once again,
Starting point is 00:50:26 a little better than they should have been, a little better than they had any business being. But yeah, Chris Owings spent from 2013 to 2018 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He actually led all of baseball in 2016 with 11 triples. And overall was just a consistent player throughout his time here. He kind of bounced around after his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, had two seasons with the Colorado Rockies,
Starting point is 00:50:52 and last played in 2023 for the Pittsburgh Pots. Pirates, but, I mean, he had a great, he was a great part of a young team that formed here. He was along there with like Paul Goldschmidt and Archie Bradley and some of those guys. So it's unfortunate. This is the stuff that makes me feel old. Chris Owings retiring. And again, this is one of those like happy trails kind of moments. It's good for him.
Starting point is 00:51:20 It's, I'm sure baseball, as he has said, has given him so much as it has. so many. But it's also one of those moments that makes me feel very old. I have a very fun memory with some friends of ours that went to an Arizona Fall League game. It was part of a great Arizona Diamondbacks fan group called the DeBax. I called DeBax Nation. And at one of the Arizona Fall League games that Chris Owings was participating in, they had a ball in which they wrote on the ball, do you want us to chant for you? Which is something that. that they were doing during Arizona Fall League games. Now, as you can imagine, as I've described,
Starting point is 00:52:00 or if you've ever been to an Arizona Fall League game, you can understand, one, that there's not a lot of people there, and two, an organized chant even by three people is quite a loud chant at an Arizona Fall League game. So it's something that may or may not be unnerving to a young player that was having a group of individuals chant for him. So they threw what I would call is a love note, right? when you write down to a girl,
Starting point is 00:52:27 do you like me? Yes, no, maybe. You have little checkboxes in there. You toss it over, maybe pass the note over. Hopefully you get a maybe. That's the best you could wish for. You're not going to get a yes. You're most likely going to get a no, but hopefully you'll get a maybe.
Starting point is 00:52:41 In this case, it was just two checkboxes of, do you want us to chant for you, yes or no? And Matt Williams, former Arizona Diamondback player and third base coach, intercepted the ball, marked it no and sent it back to the group of fans. So again, just some fun memories. And also another chance to reiterate how much fun it can be to go out to an Arizona
Starting point is 00:53:06 Fall League game. I mean, right now, you got some young guys out there for the Diamondbacks on the Salt River Rafters. Ride the raft! That are doing some fun things. And it's just a great time to not only get an autograph or two from these young players, but see their development and be along for part of the ride. Now I'm seeing all of my friends run around out in the office with my dog. So I figure it's time to go ahead and ruin the audio on this podcast by bringing Cosmo in here.
Starting point is 00:53:35 Cosmo, get over here. Everybody want to see him on the show. So Cosmo is here. He's here to bring Joy to the podcast. Hi, bud. Yeah? You want to talk to the mic for a little while? Yeah, say hi to everybody.
Starting point is 00:53:49 All right, that's Cosmo. Again, things can get stale around here. I'm in my off season, so I bring my young son here to the office with me because I get tired of paying for his daycare. So, come, good boy. Go, don't be a burden to anybody and go hang out. But again, baseball, we got Seattle Mariners today. We got our C-back. So that's who we now get to focus in on.
Starting point is 00:54:13 And hopefully we can watch this Seattle Mariners team not do what Shane thinks they're going to do. I think we as Diamondbacks fans or as Arizona sports fans can very much relate. to what Shane is going through. And quite frankly, we would probably be feeling pretty uneasy about things going our way. That's what's happening right now for the Mariners fan base, considering that they've never really had anything go positively for them in regards to the playoffs in the World Series. This feels like an exciting time,
Starting point is 00:54:42 but it also feels like you're very nervous. Like you don't want to at all start talking about any WS stuff or any championship thing. until the series with the Toronto Blue Jays is done. Quite frankly, that's smart too because this Blue Jays team is a very good team. They were the best team in the American League for a reason, and I think that quite frankly, their offense could wake up at any point.
Starting point is 00:55:07 So, you know, the edge here is that the Mariners starting pitching has been very good and has given them an opportunity to not maximize or not max out their bullpen. Like we're seeing a lot of teams do this in the playoffs. Like even good pitchers that are having good days aren't going very deep, in some cases for some of the playoff teams. Meanwhile, you got Yamamoto having a complete game for the Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:55:29 and you have Blake Snell going eight innings the day before, right? So the Dodgers, and their starting pitching, is lethal, and it looks very much like they are going to finish off the Brewers in Los Angeles and we'll be waiting for whoever wins this series between the Mariners and the Blue Jays here in the World Series. So again, I'm going to let Shane slide on this one, but, yeah, I think that he definitely is maybe, uneasy for a reason, but should be more positive for sure.
Starting point is 00:55:57 Ryan H was, let's see, Killer X says, Cosmo was about to ran on how much of a bum. Tori Lavallo is, but Derek cut him off. Yep, he was going to do it for you, Killer X, for sure. Hunt Starr said also the Pope watches, the Pope is hate watching the Chicago Cubs, and I think that's very nice. Deborah says, have Cosmo manage?
Starting point is 00:56:18 I don't know. I mean, again, he's, Cosmo doesn't like being told what to do. That's something as his owner. I can 100% confirm. So if the front office is going to run this team the way they are with Lovolo as manager, there's no way that dog is going to take orders from anybody. But again, we thank you guys so much for your time today.
Starting point is 00:56:38 We will be back tomorrow with another 12 p.m. show. But in the meantime, we're going to put together some fun stuff. Jacob Franklin is going to join us tomorrow to give his thoughts on what the Diamondbacks need to do this off season, specifically on what we discussed the other day, which is the Diamondbacks needs and the order, and quite frankly, how they're going to be able to get it done with that limited budget that they currently have. So make sure to join us for that tomorrow. And again, we'll be here at 12 p.m. for the rest of the week. So very excited about that. Let's see. Jason in the chat said there's a better chance at Sunday dinners at Casa
Starting point is 00:57:13 to Tori is eggplant parm, not chicken parm. I don't like to really verse. I don't like to really reveal what we're going to have, what Damon and I are going to have over at Toy Loblo's house for Sunday dinner until we've had it. We like to keep it a mystery. And in some cases, we don't even know. We're just kind of told what wine to bring to pair with it. So again, I appreciate you guys doing that. Killarex says Cosmo wouldn't have messed up Corbyn's pitching schedule. That you're right about. That I can't disagree with. Cosmo understands who the ace of the staff is and definitely would have gone forward with Corbin Burns on day one. But that's a different, that's a different, timeline that we don't live in unfortunately that's a much happier timeline we live in this timeline
Starting point is 00:57:54 for now so appreciate you guys hanging in there with us and being here uh for this particular episode we'll be back like i said tomorrow on friday at 12 pm until then follow me on twitter i'm at cap underscore caveman with a k Shane is at Shane deef on twitter our show is at p h and x underscore debacks but as always all roads lead to at p h and x underscore sports on twitter instagram and facebook we thank you again for your time we'll see you tomorrow someone talked about addressing the Catele-Marté rumors, maybe we'll do that. Maybe we'll address the Cotel-Marté rumors tomorrow. So make sure to join us. We have a lot to talk about, even though the news isn't really happening yet for the Arizona Diamondback. So again, we thank you guys so much for your time. We will see you tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:58:34 Have a wonderful rest of your day. Behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you can bring your dog to work.
