Starting point is 00:00:00 Lordus Gurriel says he's going to be back by opening day, but is he? Well, based on the way things look, he might actually be. We're going to talk about it. Don't you go anywhere. And welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast from Studio K, presented by our friends in Circle K. Happy Friday to you all. My name, of course, is your mayor of PHNX occasionally known as Derek Montia.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Thrilled to have you guys here. Hope you're all having a wonderful Friday. I hope your Friday is going better than mine because mine is not going so well. You know, this week has been bad for me. Tragedy after tragedy continues to fall me. And now I have a non-functional computer. Just another piece to my tremendous week. And I've been doing it mostly without this guy, Damon Farrell, aka Damon Dogg on the ones and two.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Mostly. Let's try half of the time. And including today, that would make that. 60% of the time, which in fact is more than mostly when you're counting at home, folks. I got hit by a baseball, Damon. I split my pants. Paul Seawald returned to this team. And now my MacBook Pro is cooked. So I mean, I left for for two days and all of that happened. It's crazy. But you, yeah, you tried to blame me for when I left, when you left and I was trying to hold down the, look, freaking four. We are definitely going to do a P.HNXDbacks after dark where I,
Starting point is 00:01:41 have no choice but to take full responsibility for what has happened this week considering that I blamed you for having all the bad things that happened while you were on watch. Deepbacks after dark, maybe I'm the problem. Maybe. Maybe we're all the problem. Maybe I don't really know, but I know that Lordus Guriel Jr. isn't the problem. We're going to talk about this purple-haired little dynamo coming back sooner than expected.
Starting point is 00:02:06 First, of course, I did want to give a big happy birthday to the fine state of Arizona. Arizona, you look beautiful for 112 years old. It's 112, I believe, turning 112 tomorrow on Valentine's Day. Also, Gabriel Moreno's birthday on Valentine's Day. So happy birthday to Gabby Moreno. And it makes a lot of sense for that adorable cherub to be born on Valentine's Day, doesn't it? Damon, he's, I mean, it's like love does follow him around quite a bit. Yeah, Gabby, what a special, special, sweet little boy he is. And we're going to have a great season this year. I'm excited. We are going to have a great season. I think we could be looking at Gabby All-Star game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Bold prediction alerts. Should we do that again? It went well last time. Let's not. Let's not do that. Let's not do any kind of predictions for how many home runs he's going to hit. Also, I'll go on record as saying, stop abusing me on social media because I say guys look good in spring training. I am not trying to insinuate when I post these fun little videos that I'm trying to share with the world
Starting point is 00:03:11 that these guys are going to be great. What I mean is I have to give credit where credit is due to this Diamondbacks team, Damon. They came into camp ready. They came into camp in shape. Gabriel Moreno looks better than ever. Heraldo and Cotel both look like they're in incredibly good shape. And of course, Lord is Gureel. We've been tracking his progress on Instagram.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Instagram. We've been stalking his page this entire time because we just can't get over how far his progression has come. But again, glad to have you guys here. Appreciate you guys being in the chat. No, O'Kam, we didn't have another pair of ripped pants this time. But. So wait, so what happened? I'm sorry I was out of the loop there. Oh, that fraud ESPO asked me to join him on Southwest bias and in the process of me digging equipment out of my bag at some point. Apparently, Damon, my trousers, my jeans, whatever you want to call. my pants I was wearing. It was too much. Oh, man. The ass was too much. My jeans were like, you already have me out here walking around Salt River Fields and now you're going to do a live hit from here?
Starting point is 00:04:16 No, sir. This is where I give up. What a disaster. Tapped out for sure. But there's been a lot of disasters, Damon. In fact, I mean, you could argue that as much as we want to press on and ignore Corbyn Carroll being injured, another thing that happened on my watch while you weren't here. Very true.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You know, that's another. That's a big one. That's a big one. I would consider that more detrimental. That one is a big one. That's for sure. I think we would classify that as a big mistake on your part. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:46 So there's that. But overall here, it's, you know, I do like what Tori said yesterday. Tori discussed and we showed it on the show. Just kind of having, you can't be sorry for yourself, you know. I know last year when we went through all of the injuries that we went through and all the things that Diamondbacks collectively went through, we did feel sorry for ourselves when it came to how it felt like every single one of our players was getting injured. But again, there were a lot of teams going through it.
Starting point is 00:05:16 It just felt like the Diamondbacks was worse than what those teams were going through. Do we need Tori to be your therapist, Derek? Would that fix some things in your life? Because it sounded like that was some wise wisdom from Tori Lovolo there. I think it was Tori. On a day like today when you're struggling, you think he was maybe speaking. to you? No. See, Damien, that's the thing is when I'm struggling, I can't be inspired. I can't be, I can't have my, I can't have my mood brought back.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Sure. Not unless you feed me pure edibles. Then I'll, then my mood will recover. Well, then he's fine. I have a great time. Yeah. But really, when it comes down to is, is that I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've already had my Valentine's weekend ruined simply by technology when it comes to that. I'm going to have a hard time recovering when comes to Valentine's Day. Hopefully, Mrs. Montia won't be impacted here by my sadness over my technology issues. But it might be eaten into my Valentine's Day weekend there. We'll talk about that after the show.
Starting point is 00:06:16 We had to start this thing a little late. And that's not great for anybody's Valentine's Weekend plans for sure. No, certainly not. For sure. But I will say that I do... Good thing this podcast isn't public information that people can go and watch. You know what? Look, we're not like the...
Starting point is 00:06:32 other podcasts on P.HNX around here. We dive way too deeply into our love lives. So it's fine. We're good with it. But, Damon, I did want to start off by doing something that would make people happy. Maybe bring people a little joy.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Maybe make them happier on this Friday than I currently am. And I think we could do that with some Lordus Gouriel Jr. updates. First, saw him out there yesterday. It was great to see La Pena, just at Salt River Fields. We know that he was training where wherever he was at. I know he wasn't here in Arizona, but he was diligently training as we showed
Starting point is 00:07:07 you guys time and time again from his Instagram account. But again, today it was just great to see Gurriel out there with the squad, with the boys. He was out there taking batting practice with Cotel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo and new teammate Carlos Santana. And he looked great. This is that we got some video here of Lordus taking batting practice. And Damon, let me tell you, The wind was blowing out, and the guys were loving every minute of it. Because these guys were smashing home runs. They were also smashing windows in the desert parking lot. Warning, don't park in the desert parking lot when batting practice is going on.
Starting point is 00:07:47 That's a real warning that you should heed. But again, Lord is here just, he looked great, man. He was out there. He was swinging the bat. He was running the bases. Everything about him looked ready for opening day. What's odd, obviously, is the fact that we have, right, we know based on the timeline, based on the injury, we know that there's no reason or no way truly that Lordus Guriel could be ready for opening day.
Starting point is 00:08:20 But it would appear to be the case. I mean, of course, we have Tori discussing after the practice today, just, everything that he saw from Lourdes, including he didn't get a chance to see that at bat that we just showed you. You guys get privileged to that. You guys get to see more than Tore even gets to see, but he did get to watch Lourdes round the bases and run, which is the most important part of his recovery with his knee. And this is what Tori had to say about his rehab. I know what he's saying, right? And I mean, I love him for that. And I want him to continue progressing. But we got to be really careful with Lourdes. You know, we don't want him to
Starting point is 00:08:57 come back too soon and have a have a flare up or inflammation and now he's playing catch up through the early months of his return so when that is I don't know but yes I did see him run the bases and make some turns and look really really good it wasn't that long ago that he had this this knee redone and it's amazing I love it I want this to continue but we got to figure this game plan out and be very careful I tried to but he still he gave me like the no opening day opening day And, you know, when you see somebody for the first time in months face-to-face, I think we FaceTime to a couple times, but through the course of his time in Miami, yeah, we did.
Starting point is 00:09:42 You know, everything's kind of laughing. And you know the first introductions, right? It's laughing, you're giggling, and half the things you say in jest are usually true, right? And he said, I'll be ready for opening day. And I said, ha, no, you won't. So we went back and forth in that space. So we'll see what happens. That was actually Tori discussing Lourdes being ready by opening day.
Starting point is 00:10:04 And again, there is some discussion whether or not he might actually be. Right. Obviously, the medical professionals have to clear Lourdes before that can be the case. And the biggest hurdle here, just in general being the fact that so many guys in camp feel good, so many guys in camp seem ready to go. but you know you you you've got to protect them from themselves right there's a reason why there's a timetable and there's a reason why for instance like with the Tommy John stuff you had Corbyn Burns already talking about wanting to get out there and be on the mound and you know having to kind of be
Starting point is 00:10:43 protected from himself by the staff overall but we have a little bit more from Lordus here actually do we have Lordis here on opening day being his goal Tori said you told him he'd be ready for opening day. Tori commented that you're going to be ready for the inauguration of the the time. It depends on him. When do you think you could be ready?
Starting point is 00:11:10 When do you consider that you could be well? I've prepared very well, I've done a season, as I've re-repered a but I've been a very well, I've got to let's get the medical to say what they said.
Starting point is 00:11:23 I prepared very well. I had a really good off-season, going to leave that in the hands of the medical team that make those decisions. I went on to ask Lordis about if opening day was his goal, and this whole time, that's been the goal for him, obviously, working hard to be back, be ready by that time. It didn't seem reasonable. It didn't seem feasible. And there's still a lot of doubt about if Lordus is going to be ready by opening day. But again, there is a chance here overall with Corby and Carol. being injured, the diamond backs have a lot of holes to fill, right? Not just one outfield
Starting point is 00:12:01 roll to fill, but two. So Lord is coming back and being ready would help this team out quite a bit. However, having Lord just come back too soon and re-injured his knee and miss more time is obviously not ideal. And the true concern here when it comes to everything that the diamondbacks are trying to do, they're trying to get their team back to 100%, and it's going to take a very long time for that. Justin Martinez provided us with updates that that basically suggested he's going to be out until August. So they are going to be without J-Mart for the majority of the season. And that's not good. But again, that's the reason why it was fine until the Andrew Saul Frank injury happened. And then once again, just like this outfield situation, it tips already before we even hit spring
Starting point is 00:12:53 training games to the side of the diamondbacks not having enough depth right so uh again there there could be last minute moves that are made as i talked about on yesterday's episode let's not do the nick castiano's thing please very much um but of course we also had some other really you're a fully out on that i'm fully out on that why um i i felt like i gave a decent explanation but i'll summarize it for you all the things he does bad are all the things the diamondbacks need him to do. He's a terrible defender now offensively. He's mid to average to below average. In fact, he had a negative 0.8 baseball reference war. Like there's some attraction there in the idea that Nick Castiano's rebounds, much like so many of the guys are already on this team, right? I think
Starting point is 00:13:42 the problem is the attitude that he brings with him. The problem he could be in the clubhouse. I mean, that tends to be a problem. I've never heard anything notable about him being a problem in the clubhouse. Oh, yeah, no, he's been a problem. He's been a problem because they essentially wanted to bench him, and then he was very vocal in the media. And he just, he didn't accept what he was asked to do with grace, I guess you could say. And then he kind of just, that's where the falling out started.
Starting point is 00:14:13 And, I mean, it got kind of nasty here during the offseason with them essentially telling Nick not to come to spring training. I knew that. I mean, listen, I'm not fully out on that. He would be, you say he's not a good defender. He's not. Cool, he's our DH. Check one, done. We can cross that off as an issue.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Offensive production. Yeah, he's mid to below average at this point. So was every other guy we've looked at at the DH position in the last month and a half, two months, because it's slim pickings out there at this point. And we're not the damn Dodgers. We can't go out there and get a DH who's a stud. We're going to have to, you know, maybe. find a guy that we can buy low on that maybe has some pedigree like a Castellanos does and then
Starting point is 00:14:55 what is he the automatically the third best power hitter on this roster after Corvin Carroll and Catell Marte this the day he steps in the debacks facility at talking stick I mean I Derek I I I don't know why we're fully out on this I feel like we are we are so thin at that position that that anybody looks good to me right now I mean you're I'm looking at threes at the bar going yeah yeah Yeah, you're not wrong. I get it. It's, it's one, it's 145. Is it just me or she's beautiful?
Starting point is 00:15:24 I mean, she's really giving me the vibe. She's cool. I'll say, like, you're like, I really like, like, low-cut shirts and guys that drink beer like that, right? But it's- He's kind of a vibes guy when things are going good. See, and I think you're right about that. But, again, it's- We can bank on tragedies, meaning D-BAC's success.
Starting point is 00:15:45 That's my big problem. What? Because, David. At least there's, that's, that's emotional. I don't want to wake up every day and hope for a tragedy to happen so that Nick goes three for four with two home runs and six RBI. I don't want to. I will hope for that, though. You'll force me to hope for that.
Starting point is 00:16:01 It's called an emotional hedge, Derek. And you do it in gambling against your team just to make sure that, you know, even if your team loses, you win some money on the side. No, I don't love it. I don't love it. But I, again, it's desperate times do call for desperate measures. And I think that the diamond batch. Just tiptoeing up against that line right now. That's how we do it on this podcast.
Starting point is 00:16:21 How desperate is it bringing back Paul Sewald? Damon, I mean, you and I haven't had a chance to discuss it. I knew how thrilled you would be when you heard the news. Get ready to learn 90 mile per hour fastball, buddy. Yeah, yeah. Oh, man. I can't. Thank God.
Starting point is 00:16:35 And then we got your guy, Ryan Thompson, trying to hype up the move on Twitter being like, the 2023 D-backs are back. Wait, how long ago, Ryan? Yeah. Wait, how old was Paul Seawald in 23? I did. Even though it's not official yet, I do think. that Paul Seawald did have a locker in the clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:16:52 I'm sure he did. I think he's number 22 now last worn by Josh Naylor instead of his number 30, I want to say he was 38 previously. Here's what I will say, 1.5 million, not the end of the world. He sucks, it's fine, we cut him, we trade him, is what it is. It's not like we'll put him on waivers.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Yeah. Or maybe he's worth more than $1.5 million, which is not that hard to do if he provides anything. So we'll see. hope he's not the closer. I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing when I opened up Slack and I saw a tweet about him returning to this team from Steve Gilbert. I still can't believe it in my bones. I can't. But again, I also, I defended Seawald. I defended him in 2024 when the wheels started to fall off for him with his franchise. He did. I did. Don't let history
Starting point is 00:17:48 forget that. BVox fans. Derek Montaia was the leader of Paul Seawald Mountain in 2024. And I'm like, you got to give you got to just let the guy. Well, keep blowing every game down the stretch and ruin the season. Not really. Not really. I don't think I said that. Pedigree. I think I did say that again, there's a there, there, there was something to, again, the consistency, I guess, the stability he brought to this bullpen.
Starting point is 00:18:14 And I felt like so many guys expressed that that it was hard to ignore. You heard it from every member, you know, of the bullpen that when Seawald was added in 2023, everybody knew their job and it just, it felt like it was the least exciting version of the Diamondbacks bullpen we ever saw, right? And now, I'm no Seawald Stan. You are a Seawald, dude. That's who you are. You hate Paul Goldschmidt and you're a Paul Seawald Stan.
Starting point is 00:18:42 You said the thing, and that's not true. The superior Paul in DeBack's history according to Derek Monti. Yeah, and it was the wrong Paul. It was the wrong Paul. It was the wrong Paul. I think Mike might have lost that one in translation. A little game of telephone. Oh, the D-Backs fans want, they want Paul?
Starting point is 00:18:59 They wanted Paul? Oh, okay, I'll get them, Paul. Why do they keep saying he wants $10 million? I can get Paul for like 1.5 two bags. Look, they want it? We're going to make this happen. Hold on. Let me get on my phone.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Here, quick, take two pictures of me so you guys have your thumbnails while I'm on my phone. Damon, other injury news. Wait, before we move off of Lourdes. I think we did have, do we have another clip from Tori? Yeah, we do. The one, this was Tori talking about just how diligent Lordus was in his rehab process. And that's the reason why he's, he's possibly making a much earlier return than we thought. I did see Lordus a little bit.
Starting point is 00:19:33 I did not see him hit. I saw him run the bases and just was pleasantly surprised at the progress he's made. You know, you're always keeping your fingers crossed for the good health of all those returning players. And I could tell that he's gone after it. and really done the work behind the scenes. And it is home in Miami. He's got a great trainer that he had out there today. So he promised me when I said goodbye to him after the injury,
Starting point is 00:19:59 he said that he was going to do all that he could to be back as soon as he could. And piece by piece, he was informing me about how well organized he was with, you know, the day of his surgery, what he was going to do on day two, what he was going to do on day three. And by, you know, day five or six, he was going to be ready to do this. And I lost a little bit of touch with him through the course of the offseason. I let him go through that progression. But I could see that he followed it very, very closely. Followed that progression very closely.
Starting point is 00:20:25 We were following it very closely, too, here when it came to the Lordus. We couldn't believe the things we were seeing. And again, modern medicine, modern science is pretty amazing, especially when you consider how detrimental to careers some of these injuries were. even the way that we casually just shrug off Tommy John surgery now seems to be a little amazing compared to back in my day when you had Tommy John you might come back or you might not so there's that but speaking of Tommy John I also had a chance to talk to Tommy Henry out there about his rehab process he's looked great he's been doing live BP with the guys and it's just great
Starting point is 00:21:05 to see him back on the mound after he went through that experience last year he told me he has some additional steps still to hit. Live BP's, or BP's, how many he has to do, seven or eight he's had already under his belt. So he's definitely on his way. Then he just has to check a few more boxes before he can start getting ramped up. Most likely Tommy Henry will start the season with the Reno Aces as a starter to add to the depth, as well as Christian Mena, Jill Burr Diaz, and a few other names that we could see in the starting rotation in 2026.
Starting point is 00:21:41 But if we do see their names, then something has gone wrong. Something bad has happened. Wasn't Tommy Henry pitching when Jerry got that base knock up the middle and that live A-B? Didn't you tell me that? Yes, he was. Tommy Henry, I think also was pitching when Corbin Carroll got hurt. I might be wrong about that. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:21:59 I mean, I was just going to say it's good to see that he's already pitching like kind of like live A-B situations like that. Yes, he absolutely is. He was out there doing live BP. Yeah, Live BP is without the cage and it's where the pitcher actually. throwing you, you actually have a catcher behind the plate, and then batting practice is just throwing balls in. Usually it's a coach throwing balls in, right? So, yeah, he was doing live BP, which was what Corbyn was doing when he got his injury.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And so now we're all collectively holding our breaths out there anytime somebody is taking live BP. Yeah, I mean, that's the downside of sports and string training in particular, right? Absolutely. We have a clip that I cut, Derek, that you did not ask for, but it's Torion kind of just all. the injuries. Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, again, this was, yeah, this, this is Tori just being asked about these guys all kind of coming back so quickly. Like obviously the medical staff can't allow them to come back. But when you take a look at Tommy Henry, Corbyn Burns, the relievers, AJ Puck and Justin Martinez, everybody is out there. Everybody's training. Everybody feels fine.
Starting point is 00:23:06 That's what we hear. Everybody wants to be out there sooner. You know, we heard AJ Puck say, May, we heard Corbyn say March and then he told us that the training staff is getting really sick of his joke about being ready by March, but that's how good these guys feel, and a big part of it is the work that they've been putting in
Starting point is 00:23:25 to get back and be ready for the 20-26 season, and this is what Tori had to say about that. Yeah, I think so. We have a great medical team. They get timelines, internal timelines, and we try to follow it as soon as as closely as we can, but
Starting point is 00:23:41 where we need to push, we do, and they allow that to happen. You're right. You're looking at Puck and Martinez. They feel great. Corbyn Burns feels great. And, you know, the one that we're all highlighting right now is Lordus. And we still can't believe how well he's doing. But we've got to be careful. We can't be tricked by what they're telling us. There's data that shows it takes a little bit of time to heal certain injuries in certain ways. And really what happens is I think the doctors eventually sign off on it. And once I get the information, you know, I think the doctor will sign off on Lourdes and say it's okay, he's ready to go.
Starting point is 00:24:16 So it'll get that high, high up into some expertise before we say, yes, they're ready to go. And again, that's the dilemma of a manager. That's the danger is those guys being ready and having to, again, protect them from themselves. But we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we are going to talk about a few things changing in baseball in 2026, namely the ABS Challenge system being implemented for 2026. Talk to Tori and Adrian Del Castile about it. We'll have more here on the other side of this break.
Starting point is 00:24:49 Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PH&X Diamond Back Show. Well, if you are in need of a good time this weekend, Pure Edibles has you covered with a wide range of effects. And not just to help you improve your mood, but Pure Edibles has candies that can help you get some good sleep and also have some pain relief companies as well. So make sure to check out everything that has to offer.

Starting point is 00:27:14 that's simple Mike I hate USA I hate team USA I hate the I hate America that's why I'm not The Dodgers USA yeah we'll just we'll throw the Dodgers hat Yeah sure why not I mean really it's it's what Jarmy says swagless Swagless swagless it is swagless it is very swagless that's not wrong Mike does say oh I'm sorry I thought this was America Randy Marsh. Oh, I thought that this was America when I was wearing my Puerto Rico stuff. I must have made a mistake there. He's also a Puerto Rican man. I am a Puerto Rican man. That probably has something to do with it. Not based on first glance. Not based on like a visual inspection.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Well, if you didn't know, but yeah, I mean, you've lived in Puerto Rico. Your dad's from there. I mean, yeah, my be my entire family's from there. Like, yeah, we kind of, yeah, it's an island that we kind of lived on. But what I will say is that I'm really just doing this to make Nolan Aeronado like me so much. Yeah, that's a good play. What's up, Nolan? Yeah. Hey. Hey. Hey.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Hey. Hey. Hey. Andrew Del Castillo dug my Kangaraeero's shirt by or did you that morning. Do you see this on Thursday? It's Puerto Rico. It's Puerto Rico. Because you're playing with them.
Starting point is 00:28:27 You're playing for them. That's cool. Okay. They don't like me like that day. Maybe we get a beer sometime, Nolan. I don't know. Talk a little shop. Talk a little baseball.
Starting point is 00:28:35 All I'm saying is he looks exactly like my cousin Danny and he can fit in at the family reunions without anybody blinking an eye. Of course. Speaking of blinking and I, we have a way to improve baseball by not relying on the eyes of umpires. And that is with the ABS challenge system, which will be implemented for the 2026 season. MLB.com put together a little piece just to answer a lot of questions that people may have. And if you didn't get a chance to see that, it was very interesting because they have made some changes to this. There's been some adaptations through the years. I know that, again, we talked to Adrian Del Castillo.
Starting point is 00:29:12 He told me today that, you know, at one point when he was in the minor league system, it was different. They would kind of try out a version where essentially the home plate umpire was told what the calls were. I think we have this clip, Damon, of Adrian discussing that. Here's what Dell had to say about what it was like when he was in the minor league system. But yeah, so I've been 23 when I got called up to AAA, we started using it. It was different, though.
Starting point is 00:29:41 It was like the first three games were full ABS. So the umpire had a little like mic in his ear and he'll tell him, strike your ball and you just call it. And then the last three days is like full challenge. So I thought it was pretty cool. It does get like a little
Starting point is 00:29:56 like hard to get used to. But I don't see. I think it's pretty pretty cool. Like, it's a little game inside of the game. I think it's going to be relatively the same. Obviously, you're going to, like, there's balls that you're going to get called strikes that are balls that. People are going to challenge, and it's just like, there it is what it is. But as far as, like, the marginal ones, like, right next to the line that, like, the batterers aren't sure if it's a ball or strike, if it's clipping it or not, I think, yeah, I mean, it's going to be the same.
Starting point is 00:30:24 We're not to still kind of, like, rip the ball back in the zone and just make a good move for the umpire. because he's, I mean, he's the one, it's kind of regular until somebody challenges. Right. And then they still have to, they still only have some of the challenges. Exactly. And yeah, it comes, well, it used to be three challenges, and now it's two. With two, it's like, oh, with three, like, you have one to, like, kind of give away. Two, it's like, if you miss one, you already have, you have one more, and you have to save it for, like, a big situation.
Starting point is 00:30:51 The strategy going into this year is going to be very interesting, the way the Tori manages games and the way the other managers have to basically balance these challenges and only use the, the two challenges that they have per game apiece is going to be interesting. I also found it interesting that when I think what someone is talking about is interesting, I go full on like Batman 66 with the camera angle as it kind of rotated there a little bit. Didn't get all crazy. Were you twirling your hair too? Oh, I was captivated, honestly. I was captivated, but that's only because Adrian Delcestia's voice is amazing.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Teams do get an extra challenge and extra inning. So they have their two during the first nine innings. And then because teams are managing essentially their challenges just for a regular length game, then they do get extra challenges. If the game goes into extra innings, the team that starts the extra inning out of challenges will get one challenge for the 10th. If they exhaust that challenge, then they will get another challenge for the 11th and so on. If a team has challenges remaining at the start of the 10th, they will not get an additional challenge for that inning, though they will for any subsequent innings
Starting point is 00:32:00 if they are out of challenges at the start of the inning. So you will get one challenge per inning as you advance into extra innings next season. It will be used at every MLB ballpark, which is interesting, considering we do have one team that is not currently housed at an MLB ballpark. There is no specifications if the Oakland Athletics or the Sacramento Athletics or the Las Vegas Athletics
Starting point is 00:32:24 or the athletic athletics can, we'll be able to use this at home in Sacramento for this season. But Damon, since we are talking about the athletics, what a transition. I did just want to bring up the fact that this is happening in Las Vegas, folks. I don't, there's never been a stranger situation to me than this ballpark being built because I was there when they knocked down the Tropicana, literally there present.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Then I saw the construction with my own eyes along with these fence signs that said, future home of the A's and stuff like that. And like, as you can see, they've actually made a tremendous amount of progress. This is the concourse being laid down, Damon. So what's just so funny to me is even with all of this visual confirmation that they are actually, in fact, building this ballpark for the athletics in Las Vegas. You can see it right there. That's the New York, New York right there where I've lost a tremendous amount of money
Starting point is 00:33:21 and the MGM Grand where I've also lost a tremendous amount of money. both of those are in the skyline shot here and this ballpark is happening. The reason why people still don't believe it's happening is because it's Las Vegas. And if you ever look up historically the amount of major projects that were started, construction was done on, and then they were left abandoned is amazing. I mean, there are like skeletons of former projects all around that city that never got completed. So people that live in Vegas are still very skeptical that this ballpark is actually going to be built. That's a whole other thing.
Starting point is 00:33:58 That's 2028. Me and Damon, we're taking road trips. We're good. We're going to have some fun. Not to like, you know, throw this out there, Derek. But like I obviously went and picked up my truck and drove it back from Vegas on Wednesday. Oh. Stayed at the MGM.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Oh. Put a hundred on black. Walked out with $200. Oh, well, that's. What a night on the books. What a night on the books. Got yourself. a new truck. Didn't get able too much
Starting point is 00:34:24 said, I'm just going to play this, won it, and I said, get me out of here as fast as possible, because I will lose all of it. You're right, but again, back to the exceptions. The exceptions for next year are for the Mexico City series, again, which Damon and I'll be present
Starting point is 00:34:40 at in Diamondbacks versus Padres, April 25th through 26, the field of dreams games and the Little League Classic, which is between the Brewers and the Braves on August 23rd. None of which will be played in an MLB park, therefore will not have infrastructure to support the system. Again, this does not address Sacramento. I'm imagining that they are including the athletics in this, but again, it's just an interesting thing because like in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:35:05 they have those sideline cams and there was something where they said they couldn't use them in any game because not every stadium in the NFL had them. So these technologies sometimes need to be implemented in every state, though the Sacramento, Oakland athletic situation obviously, mismanaged, very bad, and something that MLB can't really hold themselves up for waiting for them to figure their stuff out. But it will be used during the postseason. The batter, the catcher, the pitcher, or the catcher can challenge an umpire's call. No one else, not even the manager may do so. So really, when it comes down to it, the batters are going to be left to challenge on their own fruition.
Starting point is 00:35:48 And most likely, most teams are going to leave the pitcher challenge is up to the catcher. who has a much better non-biased view of whether a ball was a strike or a ball. The challenges must be made immediately after the umpires call without assistant from the dugout and without making phone calls to anywhere. So it's not like challenges currently in Major League Baseball where they can get, you know, they have 15 seconds to maybe get some input from someone watching tape and let them know if they should challenge it or not. Some teams have already indicated they will forbid their pitchers from challenging
Starting point is 00:36:20 preferring they defer to the catcher's vantage point. That's something that should be obvious for everybody. But the player taps his cap. That's how the challenges are initiated. And then it's a really cool scoreboard thing. Again, if you haven't seen it, you will see it soon. It's going to be huge in Major League Baseball. There's no getting around this.
Starting point is 00:36:40 The challenge situation is going to be the big change. It's going to be the huge rage around baseball. Hopefully, with some of the egregious bad calls that we've seen, hopefully this will make sure that those calls get rectified in some of these rare instances. Like, umpires still do a good job. No matter how much I say I hate them, no matter how much trash we talk about them, umpires have a difficult job to do, doing their job with the human eye and trying to make the right call every
Starting point is 00:37:08 time. But they also, again, it's kind of thankless. If you do your job, then cool, you did your job. What do you want? A cracker. You want a lollipop. But if you don't do your job, we all hate you. and we hate you more than we've ever hated anybody else in life.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Now, successful challenges will be retained. A team only loses its challenge if the umpire's call is confirmed because challenges can't be lost. It is incumbent upon the player to be judicious about asking for the challenge. And then there's also players immediately, basically after the pitch, a player has to initiate the challenge. If they don't, they will not get the challenge.
Starting point is 00:37:46 An umpire can disallow a challenge. If the umpire determines the player's decision of challenge was aided by other defenders, perhaps by a second, you know, someone on second, someone in the base path, or perhaps he looked in the dugout and perhaps the manager shouted in for him to challenge. The umpire can deny the request to challenge. Same goes if the challenge was not requested in a timely manner. So they have to be done pretty quickly. Overall, the biggest question people have about any change to baseball is how much longer is this going to make baseball?
Starting point is 00:38:17 And according to this report in 288 games with the ABS challenge system during spring training 2025, there was an average of 4.1 challenges per game. And those challenges took an average of 13.8 seconds. So a minute being added to the time of the game. The average saw about 57 seconds of added time, effectively giving back only a small portion of the 26 minutes that the average game time was reduced from from 2022 with the period. pitch clock. So again, it would seem like, and it adds to the excitement of the game. I don't know how to explain it. If you haven't seen it, I think you would kind of understand it a little more, but there's
Starting point is 00:39:03 this thing that, you know, like, I don't know. I'm a messy bitch. I love mess. I love drama. And there's just something about a player tap in his head after an umpire just made a call that immediately screams drama to me. It screams fight, fight, fight, is what. screams and instead we just get to go to a screen. It reminds me of the times that me and my friends
Starting point is 00:39:26 got in an argument and my friend Mohammed would simply say, why are we arguing we have the internet? He would pull out his phone and he would quickly end any debate by searching Google for whatever stupid topic we were arguing about. But again, this is a case where you go to the screen, it's fun, it's exciting, you get a reaction out of the dugout and overall everything seems to move along pretty well. Right. So of the fans surveyed and made you, League Baseball during spring training, 72% of them surveyed said the challenge system had a positive impact on their experience. Moving forward, 69% of those surveyed said they would like the sport to go ahead with full ABS versus 31% in favor of continuing with human umpires, 25% of those, which were
Starting point is 00:40:07 the umpires families protecting their feelings. But we asked Tori because the biggest thing in regards to this is how does this impact Tori's game management? And it would appear Tori hasn't had much of a chance to think about it with all of the other things going on. But I have a feeling that as we go through spring training games and this gets implemented, he'll have no choice, but to not only figure out when he wants to use it and how his strategy as a manager is going to be impacted here by this challenge system. But this is what Tori did have to say about the ABS system. I have not, but I'm going to start to ask some questions about it and find out and rely on the player development group that's had the experience with it.
Starting point is 00:40:49 You know, things like finishing plays as a base runner, finishing plays as a defensive team. You know, a ball called a strike may impact a game or an outcome. I don't know how that looks. I don't know all those rules right now, but I'll figure that out. And we're going to prepare as a team the best way we can to not have anything missed or not get an out or run into an out, that type of thing. What I do remember from last year is the catchers were pretty good at determining what was a ball or a strike.
Starting point is 00:41:21 They seem to have the highest, my own internal grading system, the highest grades. So we'll see what happens. I know pitchers are very emotional. They can throw a pitch exactly where the glove is and it's still a ball. So we're going to be careful about how we do this. I want to make sure we have a challenge and sometimes it won't happen. But I want to make sure when it's most needed at that most critical point in the game that we have a challenge available to us.
Starting point is 00:41:47 So, you know, bottom of the first inning pitch, too, I don't want the lead-off hitter to challenge a 01 pitch. I want to make sure that we're doing it the right way. I mean, the thing at the end of the day is going to be controlling batters. I feel like, I feel like on the pitching side of things, it's easy to control if you put it in the hands of your catcher. But batters might, they might burn through your challenges in the first inning. They just might.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I'm just saying. Speaking of burns and burning and burning things. By the way, I very much love the ABS Challenge system, and I think everybody out there is going to. I really do feel like with all of the changes they've made to the game, it has improved baseball. And I think that if they are ripping the Band-Aid off and letting the healing begin of us getting past these old days of all of the,
Starting point is 00:42:35 we can't change the game, the sanctity of game, all that stuff, putting all that stuff in the past and just moving the game forward in a way that makes it more fun to watch. and quite frankly makes it more correct, makes the calls correct, make sure that the outcome is the right one at least as much as possible. It feels like we're moving in the right direction. But again, I also think it does add a fun element to the game that a lot of people are going to enjoy. One thing I didn't enjoy was the MLB Networks picks for the top D-Backs players of all time, Damon.
Starting point is 00:43:06 I'm going in blind on this. So you say you didn't enjoy it. I didn't even really look at it too hard. Well, let's take- Do we go hitters or pitchers first? I think this was Harold Ramis and Matt Vasgursion, right? Harold Reynolds. Harold Reynolds. And we got, again, we got their picks here for the top Diamondbacks players of all time.
Starting point is 00:43:24 Do you want hitters or pitchers? Let's start with hitters. Let's start with their position players. Interesting, Harold Reynolds here has Gabby Moreno there as his catcher. I mean, he'd probably be number two for me at catcher outside of Mickey, for sure. No, I know. and I don't think that they got a lot wrong here. I will say that Matt Vaskerge and going with Eurubial Derazzo.
Starting point is 00:43:47 He's like you. He hates Goldschmidt. It's crazy. Anyone that doesn't have O'Dog and Pardomo is out of their damn minds. It's crazy. Yeah. So at least they got those two right. Yeah, but where is Catelle Marte?
Starting point is 00:44:03 I mean, I think. What are we doing here? Yeah. What are we doing here? What do you mean? Yeah. That was too casual. This is your first time seeing this, David.
Starting point is 00:44:12 I do love O-Dog. I love O-Dog, too. O-Dog doesn't even wait. Let me tell you this. He was my favorite player. O-Dog doesn't even wait for the grounds crew to come over and clean stuff up. I watched him drive a truck over and rake and put back an area of the dirt himself because he doesn't need anybody to do it for him.
Starting point is 00:44:30 O-Dog is my favorite person most days out at spring training. He is a joy to be around. And I still find this to be egregious to not have Cotel-Marté in there at second base. I'm going to tell it. D-H. We'll go O-Dog at second. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. O-Dog was a better defender than Cattell. Oh, I mean, I don't know. Dude, he was nasty.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Mark Reynolds, also by Matt Baskergen, nasty work over Matt Williams. Yeah, that's crazy. That's insane. I mean, or Gino or, I mean, to be fair, like, let's talk about our third base situation on franchise history, Derek. It's hashtag not great. No, it's not been hashtag. Chad Tracy. I mean, it's, we don't. have exactly a murderer's row of Jake Lamb.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, we've never really had a long-term third basement. Right. So. That's why Matt Williams feels like the legendary one in the right pit. Yeah, fair. It's hard for that 2001 team not to win you over on some of these guys, for sure. Outfield.
Starting point is 00:45:28 Four-time gold glove winner, O'Dog, by the way. Like, show some damn respect. I feel like Matt, Matt, like, I'm surprised that Geraldo Prudomo was actually on Matt best version's list. Why? I mean, he's the go. Because look at the rest of his goddamn list, Damon. Look at the rest of it. There's that one single modern player on his list.
Starting point is 00:45:47 And that's what Jerry does. No, the 2026, 2025 Arizona Diamondbacks. Jerry changed the game, Derek. Eric Burns in the outfield over Corbyn, Franklin, Carol. What? I mean, Eric Burns was a fan favorite type of player. And also, didn't he work for MLB Network? So Matt Viscurgeon probably has a personal relationship.
Starting point is 00:46:08 relationship with Eric Burns. That's why Chris Young makes both these guys lists too. Well, that's fine. They know, they know Chris Young. They know Eric Burns. I actually would argue I think Chris Young was a better outfielder than Justin Upton. But I still have a hard time not having Steve Finley in that outfield, Maurice Gonzalez. I mean, Chris Carroll. Chris Young played for for longer, but like Upton's peak was way higher than Chris Young's. Sure. Way higher. And I'll always remember that peak. I mean, he changed my life. It was named Uptown for a reason. 2011 was so electric. It was an electric year. I just don't love this. Let's look at the pitchers because I'm done being mad about the position players. I'm ready to be mad about the game.
Starting point is 00:46:47 See, I don't mind Steve Finley. I mean, obviously, Steve Finley is champion. Eric Burns, I don't mind being on this list. I feel like that is, like, exactly who you're trying to highlight on these kind of lists. Steve Finley on the list. Steve Finley is not on that list. Yeah. Ormond Carroll is not on that list.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Like, Steve Finley is one of the greatest outfielders in Diamondbacks. What I'm gathering out of this. Derek is if I put together like a Damon's favorite list of starting nine, you'd be furious with what I put together. I would probably tackle you. Yeah, you would. Well, let's look at these pitchers. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:18 This is even more egregious. Ian Kennedy and Patrick Corbyn on Matt Vasquezian's starting pitch. Ian Kennedy was awesome. He was awesome, but so was so many other players. Patrick Corbyn's. is crazy. Patrick Corbin is nuts. Yeah. Like, we all know that... Who gets fired up
Starting point is 00:47:41 for Patrick Corbin? Look, I mean, like, he was good for a couple seasons, but damn. Like, at least Harold Reynolds went with the very predictable four there. He decided not to go with a fifth, which is crazy because Merrill Kelly belongs on this list. Yeah, Merrill Kelly's a franchise. And I would argue, perhaps, that Merrill Kelly belongs on
Starting point is 00:47:59 this list above Zach Allen. Yeah, I think it's a conversation to be had. It's a conversation to be happy. It's a conversation to be had, but Okam says no Granky. That's another egregious miss here when it comes to relievers. Or I'm sorry, starring pictures. Relievers, Jose Valverdi and Matt Mante. Jose Valverdi was a franchise favorite.
Starting point is 00:48:19 You can't argue otherwise. That's all he's going with, though, here is. Papa Grande was nuts, dude. I mean, is that what this is? Derek, I'm telling you, dude, I got to look into the camera for this one. When I was sub 10 years old and my parents, when Dennis and Jane would take Damon for about 10 games a year up to Chase Field, up to Bank One, and I'd go watch the squad. When the fire would come out and Papa Grande was running out of the pen, I thought a real-life superhero existed.
Starting point is 00:48:49 In real time, I thought I watched, I thought I was watching it in front of my eyes. It was special. It was special. Vince McMahon. I mean, he might be right. But like, see, when I think fan favorites, I don't necessarily, franchise favorites, I don't necessarily think of. the best players. So maybe that's part of what's going on here. Maybe they're just going with like those kind of guys. I mean, Iceman, Matt Mantae. I mean, all of these guys had amazing nicknames. Cesar says Kurt Schilling. I don't know if I'd put him in as a franchise favorite for me, but I would, I think it's egregious for him to not be one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. I just don't like Kurt Schilling as a person. Where is Ziegler? Where's Brad Ziegler?
Starting point is 00:49:30 Dude, Derek, should we make a franchise enemies list of people that have played for franchise and debut it on a show later later on next week yeah yeah for sure we do the same thing but it's derrick and damon's franchise enemies a j pollock yeah it's all players that you want to do players that played for us in the past that we no longer like yeah okay i'm all for that yeah traders if you will yeah traders or like jace peterson yeah like i'm putting like the people i've liked watching play for this franchise the list on that list that's that's what i was born to do. That's what they, they signed on me to work at PH&X sports for. I know. Just to make lists like this, but the opposite. Well, that's what you pitched in your,
Starting point is 00:50:13 when you were interviewed. Yeah. I said, I'm really good at being a hater. How does that sound to everybody? Like, they came out of that meeting and they were like, that guy. That was something. Lots of hate in that dude. That was, there was a lot of bitter all of that interview. And I think I liked it. And then ESP was sitting there and exactly what we needed. You were like the Tommy fam, basically. Yeah. Like, we needed an edge around here. And I was, that was, and this Damon guy, he's that. What did Tommy Fam say that one time where he's like, he was like, I'm going to fight somebody?
Starting point is 00:50:41 He said, there's a reason why I do all kinds of fighting in the off season because I'm prepared to fuck somebody up. That's me on Twitter. Fighting with people and the replies every day. I'm just, I'm staying ready to go in case someone wants to get in a debate with me, Derek. That's ready. I mean, David stays in fighting shape at all times. Of course, we thank you guys for being around for all of this,

I also have the full schedule here for those of you that might be attending in case you were wondering about this one-of-a-kind event with meet and greet, with players, with alumni, autograph, photo opportunities, all that kind of stuff. Corbin, Alec, and Thomas will be on the main stage from 1115 to 1135. After that is Pavin Smith and Tim Tawa from 1140 to 12. 12.15 is Nolan Aeronado, Cotell Marte, and Geraldo Perdomo. That's probably your main event. Crew right there. Am I wrong?
Starting point is 00:53:19 You got the future of this team at 1230 to 1245 and Jordan Lawler, Tyler Locklear, and Jorge Barrosa. The pitchers come to the stage from 130 to 145 with Corbyn Burns, Merrill Kelly, Michael Soroka, and, of course, Big Body, James McCann, joining them for security reasons. Tori hits the stage with Mike Hazen from 105 to 150 to 205. Then you got Fott, Nelson, Erod, and Gabby from 210 to 225, 230 to 245, Clark, Ginkle, Thompson, Adrian Del Castillo. So there's your schedule. Hope, if you're going, that helped you in some way know what time you want to be there. and also maybe you can plan out when you're walking around the ballpark, when you're at the party,
Starting point is 00:54:01 and when you decide to go take in the main podium area where those guys will all be. Derek, did you, forgive me if I misheard, but I could have sworn I heard sexy arms Jimmy McCann's name mentioned? Yes, you did hear that. Did you happen to show the greatest photo that's ever been posted by the DeVAC's social team on the show yesterday? Or is that something that we miss with Damon? No, I mean, honestly, the fact that I, this is embarrassing because as you know, walking past my office, I blew this Instagram post up and do a full-sized poster and hung it in my office. But yeah, you're not wrong. We got James McCann entering Salt River Fields.
Starting point is 00:54:44 I mean, first off, it's the pitch of dawn. I mean, it's 4 a.m. outside. James McCann looks like a million bucks. He's walking in. He's never been happier. He just wants to get to work. And my God, does it. arms look big. Remember when Espo was telling us the story about Kobe inviting someone out to the
Starting point is 00:55:02 gym and when that person was out there at four, Kobe had already been there since 330? Yeah. Same thing with James McCann. A hundred percent. James McCann tells the pictures to get there at five. He's been there since 245. Baseball Kobe. Yeah, he doesn't stop. He's got the dog tag on. He's got, I mean, he's flexing in those arms. And are we going to talk about the sandals? I mean, you got to let the dogs breathe a little I get it. I get it.
Starting point is 00:55:25 Is it not chilly at 2.45 a.m.? This man has no code on. Not when you have muscle mass like that, Derek. You don't get cold. Yeah. When you cultivate mass and turn it into this amount of muscle, you... Dude, is that just the coolest guy that's ever lived? I sent this to Derek.
Starting point is 00:55:40 I was like, have you said, tell me, you've seen this. This was made for you and me. We texted each other about this entirely too many times, David. It's now, it's the, it's mine and Derek and Kevin's group chat. Yeah, that's funny. I had to think of a third person. Yeah, it's the picture on the group chat, but no big deal. Well, we thank you guys so much.
