Starting point is 00:00:00 You are now listening to PHNXD backs after dark. Bro, fuck the Dodgers. Then, now, forever. And forever, ever. First. What a series. What a series. The Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium since 2017.
Starting point is 00:00:31 17. 2017. The first sweep of the Dodgers since 2018. So it's like that we're off of the first sweep or the, the last sweep in a very long time but we're talking about the first sweep in nearly 10 years yeah at dodger stadium yeah correct in la yeah and i mean just like you thought it was gonna be it was tim tawa oh yeah for the dodgers did the dodgers have more errors combined the entire series or more runs scored the entire series that's a great that's a great question i mean i
Starting point is 00:01:09 I kind of said that on Friday after we did the post game show. I prefaced this with like, let's let's fucking calm down. They scored a lot, but they also got given a lot of runs. Like that's why that's why we were still like, I think, two or three for 13 on Friday. But, you know, the Dodgers just continued. And this is not a bad defensive team. This is the team that had the third most outs above average in baseball behind the Cubs and the Diamondbacks. That's why it's surprising.
Starting point is 00:01:41 That's why it's shocking. Because they're not a, they're very, they're very fundamentally sound. And they were, they were messing up the fundamentals like not catching fly balls. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That pahist dropped on Sunday was something else. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Also, it was the first time the Dodgers have been swept at all this season. They are the last team to not be swept in baseball. So now every team in baseball experienced at least. least one sweep in the first half. And I'm glad the Diamondbacks could do it to them. I'm glad it swept them, right? I mean, man. I'm also glad that Zach Gallen's elbow needed a 15-day break. And that might be why we also won today because Gallen didn't pitch. Look, man, I mean, there's you could say that absolutely. There's no doubt about that. Mitch Bratt wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination. But he still gave the Diamondbacks a chance to win. It was a little,
Starting point is 00:02:39 bit more of a opener with a bullpen start considering how early they had to pull them out of the game however you're right i mean that that that factors in and you know what else factors in tim tawa having seven hits and seven rbi i and two home runs in this series instead of paven smith going o for 13 yeah and again i am not trying to it's it's hard not to sound like i'm really putting paving down, but it doesn't matter who it is. Player X, you could even say like Adrian Del Castillo, imagine Adrian Del Castillo going one for 12 over that stretch, or Jorge Barrosa may be giving you a pair of doubles at some point over the series. Without Tawa's production and what he was able to do for this team as their first basement in this series, who knows if the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:03:31 win the series, let alone sweep the series. Tawa was incredible and he really did drive the offense. And in game two, it was McCann with two home runs. Yes. Big body, James McCann, sexy man, Jimmy McCann. Fresh off the DL. Yeah, man. And I mean, again, his first two home runs of the season and two big home runs in a game once again against the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:03:56 He was also incredible. Just unexpected production from sources that you did not think you were going to get that kind of production out of against the Dodgers. And that's truly why they won this series. And great pitching, too. The Diamondbacks pitchers did an excellent job of holding the most potent offense in baseball to essentially three runs per game. Right? That's what the three runs and three runs and three runs.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And that's allowing Otani to have two home runs against you. Yeah. You know, like literally Otani had two bombs. And who hit the other bomb on Friday night? It was pahas. It was the back-to-back ones off of Iran. Yeah. So, I mean, for our, for our rotation and bullpen to,
Starting point is 00:04:37 do what they did in that series. Man, hats off. Yeah. That bullpen has been, I mean, they've been putting some spots where they've had to go in there sooner than they should have, having to pitch longer than they should have. And, I mean, as of recent, that bullpen is cooking. It is cooking.
Starting point is 00:04:56 You are not wrong. When you take a look, even the other day with Taylor Clark's blunder of an outing, he still comes back strong and helps his team in this series. He had an inning and a third today. his ERA is 2.59. Ryan Thompson's is 2.88. Kevin Ginkles 2.84. Jonathan Lazzania, Loisica, 2.17. Johnny Lazzania, I like that. The only guy that has a high ERA in the bullpen is Paul Seawald. And who gives a damn? And that, and that, in honestly, bro, that doesn't matter because you look at it. What is his save record?
Starting point is 00:05:32 That's what I care about. I'm saying. I don't get a shit about his ERA. Because I mean, if Seawall goes in there and gives up a run, I mean, the ERA is going to be 87. So yeah, yeah. That's very true. And also, I don't give a shit if he gives up one run per outing as long as he shuts the door and we get the win. Yeah. I don't think he cares either. And I think that's a big reason why he's had success this year.
Starting point is 00:05:55 He's also just kind of the fucking man in those spots. Like when you look at him this year, his confidence is through the roof. It is, it is big dad. energy from Paul Sewell. It is. He's the dad of the bullpen. He is he was shaming James McCann for sharing an AI image of himself on 4th of July. Literally said we're going to have to have a talk about this. There's big dad energy right there.
Starting point is 00:06:25 But again, I you got to be impressed with this, right? Like I know their record isn't what some people expected it to be because the expectations. kind of rose, especially during stretches this season. But finishing the first half at 49 and 47, above 500, still missing Corbyn, still missing AJ Puck, still missing Justin Martinez, no Jordan Lawler. And basically, you know, and honestly right now knows that gallon, right? But kind of a revolving door of players, young players having to come up and make their major league debuts this year fill in some of them getting injured we got waldschmidt getting hit in the
Starting point is 00:07:09 hand luckily he was okay and he was able to come back and play in today's game but today's game we had tommy troy or excuse me it wasn't today's game of saturday yeah saturday yeah bounced off the wall and now has to have an MRI on his shoulder and uh that sucks to here but again it's been i i mean finishing at 49 and 47 in the first half with the injuries they've had the set they've had, all of the ups and downs, it's pretty impressive overall. And not only that, we finish strong with a sweep of the Dodgers, of all fucking teams. They did it to the fucking Dodgers. It just sends such a message that, yes, this team is still chaotic.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Yes, this team has a lot of questions and is very confusing. But they did this with Catell-Martier getting one hit in this series. Yeah. They did this with Corbyn Carroll going 0 for 4 nearly every game and striking out several times throughout the series. I mean, that that again has been what's impressive. Ildemar Vargas, two for four today. Aronado, one for four. You had a big home run from Aronado yesterday.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Like just so many guys step out. That's a snag at third base today, though. That's a third base. Dude, classic Aronado. Just, I mean, vintage Aronado. It was incredible. incredible man i mean the guy still got it at this age what i'm more amazed by is that he's able to do that and then he has the slowest sprit speed that you've ever seen on the base path
Starting point is 00:08:47 otherwise you know i guess i guess you got to save the knees to do that kind of stuff you can't he he has to pick and choose when he empties the reservoir and a hundred percent doesn't seem to be where he chooses to do it and i'm okay with that i'm okay with that too i don't need i don't need I don't need Aronado sprinting around the base paths. Like if you just on a nice jog, I'm fine. Well, I mean, again, this is important because there's not a lot of fucking time for them to prove to the front office that they need to buy. And honestly, the way they finished up here against the Padres and the Dodgers, it's all that you could have asked for. A split of four games in San Diego.
Starting point is 00:09:29 A season split now with the Dodgers. Dodgers when you think about it because we got swept in the opening three game series in LA and then we split the four game at Chase Field and now we swept this series so the season series is now five and five between the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers. We got what one we have one or two more series against them before I think we have a lot more still. I know we have a ton of games still against the Padres. So I know I hope I hope that team continues to be an absolute abysmal.
Starting point is 00:10:02 dumpster fire but shit i am just i'm just couldn't be happier about this team and it's also funny how quickly in baseball you literally go from the season is over to we've never been more back right you know the season was over after the brewer series it felt like right and you're heading into san diego you're heading into LA like it just felt like it was over at that point um but look at us now who would have thunk it let me ask you this and this is i want you're honest do you think that we have seen the last of zag gallon i do yeah i do too i think i do too i think the arizona diamondbacks and again i'm just speculating i'm absolutely going on no information that i have in any way about this but what i will say is i i know the organization has a way of being respectful
Starting point is 00:10:59 about some things and i feel like again part of me says there's no way the medical staff is just going to fake an injury so that that galen can kind of ride off into the sunset instead of being designated for assignment yeah but i will also say that the diamondbacks do have a way at times at finding that way of being respectful and this feels like a way to give Zach a chance to still have a career without making a few more starts to just prove he's having you know like goes if he goes out there and gives up two more starts where or has two more starts if he would have gone out there today and given up six earned runs gone out in his next start after the all-star break and given up five the diamond backs couldn't let him start anymore right it was they were going to
Starting point is 00:11:53 have to pull him and they were going to have to designate him for assignment because they weren't going to put him in the bullpen or do anything like that. And any move they made, even putting him in the bullpen was going to basically change the trajectory, the course of his career, which has already been altered by his own performance. And I'm not going to act like it's not. I'm not going to act like it's a serious reason, right? But that my conspiracy brain agrees with you and here's what you're saying. My conspiracy brain feels like this is a way for them to gracefully allow Zach Gallin to kind of just fade into black and then become a free agent this offseason. And perhaps they could creatively spin that this injury was a reason why he had the highest
Starting point is 00:12:34 ERA among qualified pitchers this season. But that's where my brain leads. Yeah. I feel like it gives him a better chance, right? Like it gives him a better chance. Now, my realistic brain that is a little bit more of a journalist and a little bit more of a professional and has been around the block a few times feels like Zach might actually just be injured and perhaps the injury impacted his performance but i mean it it depends on how things progress
Starting point is 00:13:07 right like there i mean that we could find out Zach needs surgery and then yeah but i mean does that mean that zack gallons had a bad elbow like the past no weeks that's the thing you know It's like, well, there's something that very much has stuck with me since Corbyn Burns, uh, spoke with us about his setback. And that was he basically said if he was 16 starts into the season, he wouldn't have even told anybody about the injury that he experienced. That makes sense. Because it would have just kind of been like the wear and tear on your body throughout 162
Starting point is 00:13:42 games. Yeah, you're just going to thug it out. You're just going to thug it out because you, you play hurt. You don't play injured, but you play hurt all. as an athlete, right? And there is part of me that thinks like there's injuries that players have that could just be kind of nagging things that then do develop into something worse. Or perhaps, you know, they get to a point where they've been putting it off and they're like, you know what, we can't do this anymore and we feel like this is, you know, impacting your performance
Starting point is 00:14:12 on the field. So we're going to go ahead and put you on the aisle now. I don't know, man. I mean, again, I think that there's still going to be more information that comes out about. this oh for sure if if if the diagnosis stays as right elbow inflammation and that gets moved from the 15 day i.l to the 60 day i'll yeah that i'm leaning a little bit more conspiracy right but if they give us an actual diagnosis and say that he sprained his ucel or has some sort of injury that even if it doesn't require surgery, just something that's going to put him on the shelf. Yeah, shut him down like they had to shut down Ryan Nelson for the year. Then, I mean, I'm, I feel like it's actually there because I don't think that, I don't think
Starting point is 00:15:00 they're going to create a whole fake injury to make up that he has. But right elbow inflammation is just kind of a gray enough area that it could go either way. And I understand why people think that. I understand why this was right about the time that enough was. enough as far as that gallon was concerned. Yeah. It's the timing. Every win right now, especially as they head into this trade deadline at the beginning of August is critical, like critical. It's like must every, every series is a must win. And if you can't win it, every series is a must not get swept because they need to pocket and stack every win they can between now and August
Starting point is 00:15:43 third. I don't think that it's going to be that, like, I don't think if they feel. finish below 500 at that point, it's going to be an immediate, okay, we're two games below 500. We got to sell. I don't think it's like that. I do think that, you know, they have to put in a decent enough effort against teams that are good teams in baseball in order to impress the front office. Sweeping the Dodgers right before the All-Star break sends such an impactful message. Yeah. And it's so huge because you're going to have these baseball executives.
Starting point is 00:16:17 off from watching them play baseball for the next, you know, five days, six days. And it's just going to allow them to think about that. And the last thing they're going to think about is that we just swept the goddamn fucking Dodgers. How can we be sellers at the trade deadline when Corbyn Burns is going to come back? Jordan Lawler has coming back. I'm Mike fucking hazing.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I'm a fucking, I'm a dude and a guy and a stud. I'm going to go out there and get this team of first. basement. I'm going to fucking bring them Luis Sarize. I'm going to bring this team, Wilson Contreras, just so that we can hear Steve say that goddamn name every single game for the rest of the season when he hits dingers for this team. And also, I don't give a shit that he just got in a brawl.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Maybe the Diamondbacks need a little bit of an edge. And maybe if you can give me an edge and a guy that fucking mashes the ball and plays first base and DH and prevents us from having the worst team OPS at first base in the live ball era, then fucking give it to me. Right. And again, if this team with Tim Tawa on it just swept the Dodgers, who knows what a team that you supplement with an actual DH slash first baseman that will really bring power to this lineup do for you and make you a competitive team.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Not to mention, you still have one of the best goddamn release. and one of the best goddamn starters in all the Major League Baseball waiting in the wings to come back from injury. Corbyn just started his throwing program. His MRI was clean. Things look good and he should be fucking back soon. That alone is the biggest trade deadline edition the Diamondbacks can make. Getting Corbyn Burns back before September. If that man pitches one game in August, thank you baseball gods.
Starting point is 00:18:11 I'll sacrifice the chicken. I'll figure it out. Don't worry about it. Don't tell, don't tell Peter. I'll give Joe Boo the run. God, I mean, can you imagine? Can you imagine? And again, if in that time, they can also find themselves a decent bat to be a DH first baseman, like those, the combination of those two things completely changes this team. Not to mention, Michael Soroka is returning right after the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:18:39 And, you know, again, Jordan Lawler, solid center fielder is going to be back as well. Not to mention these other guys have played pretty damn good baseball, these other youngsters, you know, Waldy and Tommy Troy. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Tommy Troy's MRI also comes back clean. Yeah. Oh, speaking of that, I noticed this when, because they made a point to mention this on the broadcast, when Tori made the call to bring in Barrosa.
Starting point is 00:19:06 I'm not sure there's a better way for a manager to call in a player than what Tori Lavello does when he calls in Jorge Barrosa. Have you seen it? No. Where he does like the little man thing. Like he like, he like crouched down and like pointed to the dugout and like crouched down and like like the little guy. Send me the little fella.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Yeah. Well, you know, the funny part is like, I mean, I jokingly refer to Barrosa's little like, come on little man. Like I mean, he's a little man. That's so funny. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the guy, but like he's a little guy. Speaking of making calls, the Dodgers tried to cut the line to the bullpen. sure did phone today
Starting point is 00:19:46 they tried you gotta give them credit right if you ain't cheating you ain't tried and that organization will do everything they can to get a win won't they
Starting point is 00:19:55 including including disconnecting the visiting phone to the bullpen isn't that fucking crazy that they did that yeah that is oh it's just
Starting point is 00:20:05 it's a technical error yeah in 2026 the visiting dugout not just yeah not affecting all of the communications in the building? Nope, just the visiting dugout phone, huh?
Starting point is 00:20:17 Because at that point, if the Diamondbacks can use the bullpen phone, the Dodgers shouldn't be able to use the bullpen phone. Like, make it fair. Crazy. Hey, not that it mattered, though. They didn't. That did better. We have, you have cheating tactics.
Starting point is 00:20:32 We have Tim Tawa. We do have Tim Tawa. God damn right, we do. Thank God I do. I mean, it's funny because we poke fun at him hitting home runs over the, over the scoreboard in Reno. Oh, yeah. And being Babe Ruth of AAA.
Starting point is 00:20:49 And he's bringing a little bit of that juice to the majors now. It's great to see. I think he heard the chatter. He heard the whisper. And honestly, man, I think a big part of it is this is a guy that is taking full advantage of another opportunity to be on the big league roster. Yeah. And doing what you did this weekend is how you. keep yourself on the big league roster.
Starting point is 00:21:15 And it's great that he's a utility guy that can play in so many different ways, right? Yeah, we can put him anywhere. Those two things are going to keep him here. But again, he needs playing time, right? You don't give him consistent playing time. And then he goes right back to doing, you know, what so many of these guys have once you, once you, you know, swap them in and out and sit them on the bench for four straight games. It's just not easy to stay in a rhythm when you're playing like that.
Starting point is 00:21:39 But my man was in a rhythm in L.A. And boy, there's some mad Dodgers fans in our replies. But I did want to get your thoughts on the all-star festivities. Those kicked off today with the futures game. And then we have, I mean, it's all this weekend, right? We got the draft. It was yesterday. And the day, Diamondbacks got themselves a catcher first overall.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Pretty decent move. I kind of like that. I think it's a smart move because I don't really know who the future behind the plate is for this team right now yeah i mean doesn't seem to be adrian del castillo right no until until gabby morano's longer no longer here i don't know who our catcher is after that i'm i'm still very nervous about his you know future with this team considering that he is not signing an extension so yeah i think that writing is on the wall a bit with the drafting of a college catcher here uh but more importantly we got the big MLB events coming up here oh yeah baby got
Starting point is 00:22:42 We got ourselves the home run derby on Monday, the All-Star game on Tuesday. Our guy, the plumber himself, Muna Takam, Yurakami, comes back from injury and declares himself. Like, what a hero comes back from injury and is like, oh, by the way, I'm going to play a few games and then I'm going to be in the home run derby. Yeah. Yeah, that's going to be fun to watch. It's going to be fun to watch those guys mash. if I had to look at the list of the guy of the competitors and if I had to pick a name, I'd be hard pressed not to go for Junior Camero at this point because everything Junior Camero
Starting point is 00:23:20 swings at seems to fly out of the ballpark. I love that he's in it because I feel like it's rare that we get, you know, the hottest hitter in baseball in the home run derby, right? So that's cool. Same thing with Miracami. Ben Rice, similar situation as well. He's been killing it for the Yankees. We got two Phillies in it in Philadelphia
Starting point is 00:23:43 with Bryce Harper and Schwabber. I don't hate that. It's fine. It's, I mean, especially Bryce Harper in there. I mean, that's your certified guy that doesn't belong, but it's going to be the fan favorite. Yeah, so I was actually wanted to pose the question because I've seen this pop up on social media
Starting point is 00:24:01 throughout the week about players performing in the home run Derby that are not in the all that that are not actually all stars and not not saying that harper and these are but there's there's a couple there's guys that are in the derby that are not all stars yeah how do you go about that i don't care yeah i really don't care i like i don't i mean i think the voting for the all star game is stupid yeah it is the fan vote is garbage and it ruins the MLB's ability to promote their current actual like stars, right? And make those guys that are new stars into superstars. That's how you do that, right?
Starting point is 00:24:41 You get them, you get them publicity. You get them commercials and stuff, sure. You get them appearances on, you know, shows and whatnot, fine, whatever. The biggest way that you get your stars pushed in front of fans is to have them when they are deserving be all stars, right? And I think that the fan vote just gets too many undeserving guys into the end of the All-Star game as it stands. And then too much work needs to be done afterwards to select the reserves and get the guys that actually deserve to be there in there. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:15 But when it comes to the home run derby, I want the guys that hit dingers. That's what I want. And I don't want that to be impacted by the fact that they have a limited roster for the AL and NL. It's a fun thing. All of this should be fun. All of it should have, you know, as much, as many stars as they possibly can in there. So I don't hate this. Is there any obvious or glaring all-star snubs you can think of?
Starting point is 00:25:44 Like somebody that should have made the All-Star team, but didn't? I think there's lots because there's a lot of young players that didn't get in. You know, I think while, you know, while I made a case a little bit, for Catele-Marté, I think that there's even better second baseman that were snubbed than Cattel, right? So plus we've had so many changes. Is it terrain? Ozzie Albies is the started sucking basement. Is he having a season for real like that?
Starting point is 00:26:13 No. No. Both him and Louisa Rise had better, both Cattel and Luis Rize had better numbers. But Luis Rize is the reserve. So he's in and he's very deserving. And he should be the starter overall. Yeah. I mean, Cotel, I mean, you can make a key.
Starting point is 00:26:28 case, but I think the, you could tell out a very, very slow start, which didn't, it didn't do many favors, you know, and the numbers aspects. So, I agree. I agree. And he's, you know, it is what it is. I want
Starting point is 00:26:44 the Diamondbacks players to get a break. I'm cool with Corbyn Carroll going in, and I'm cool with Erod going in. Like, they'll be able to space his starts out enough that the All-Star game, the All-Star game's just going to help keep E-Rod stretched out for, Yeah, he'll throw an inning tops.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Exactly. Honestly, I mean, it's like a bullpen. I mean, I assume he will, but you never know. He should. He should. He's a lefty. He'll come in. He'll come in for an inning.
Starting point is 00:27:09 But I don't think there, is there even the inning restriction on on relievers in the All-Star game? I don't know if they have that. I mean, I wish they didn't have that restriction in regular season baseball because I'm, I'm old school. I like pitching the matchups. Yeah. I'm a fan of 14-hour baseball games.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Well, overall, I feel like we've sped the game up enough that we can get back to let relievers just come in for a batter or two. Yeah. No, I mean, Monday's going to be fun. The derby is always a good time. The All-Star game, I'm going to watch it. Then I'll be sad for a couple of days when there's no baseball. It's dope to see that Verlander got picked up as the All-Star legend.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Very deserving. That man is a horse. So, which is being his final season. I mean, first ballot Hall of Famer, no doubt about it. Absolutely. It would be good to see him go out there and, you know, kind of get the Clayton Kirschaw treatment that Kirsch got last year.
Starting point is 00:28:10 Right, right. Random fun started on that, he'll scream about charity cases. Random Justin Verlander fun fact that I discovered yesterday. Verlander has thrown three no-hitters in his career. One of them was on June to 12. one of them was on some other in May 7th the other was on September 1st so June 12th is my dad's birthday September 1st is my birthday and I was like man if you would have thrown one on May 11th he would have had all three Velasco's no hitter but two out of three ain't bad
Starting point is 00:28:46 damn it's like it's like he was targeting targeting it for you man well I can't wait all-star game's going to be fun run derby's going to be a blast and then we get back to baseball next Friday and the Diamondbacks still have to keep their foot on the pedal because who do we open up with the St. Louis? Cardinals. Yeah, we got the St. Louis Cardinals. Wait, is this where we have that extra game fitted in because they didn't want to change the same time? No, no. No. No. Yeah, and it's when it should because we have a three-game series with them. Why not just do it there now? Let's just do a double header on Saturday. We're already there. Saturday's a one-pen start. Well, it's a home game. It's a home game.
Starting point is 00:29:25 So that's the difference is it has to be a home game for the Cardinals. So we got three with the Cardinals. Then we got three at home against the athletics, which is always a dangerous team. I'll be there. A Wednesday day game. Oh, yeah, 1240 start on the finale. Then the next day should have been an off day for me and for the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:29:47 No. It's a 2.15 start that day. So we'll probably do a postgame show that day with it starting at 2.15. And then they go to Washington. and then Pittsburgh and Cleveland. That's how they close out the month. That is the, that literally takes them right up to the All-Star break.
Starting point is 00:30:05 So they're not unbeatable teams. The Guardians aren't unbeatable. The Pirates aren't unbeatable. The Nationals are playing really good fucking baseball, but we struggled with them. We struggled with them. So, I mean, you're looking at this, this stretch of the season,
Starting point is 00:30:22 theoretically before the season started, I think would have been a stretch that you're like, fuck yeah, you know, like Cardinals, Athletics, Cardinals, Washington Nationals, Pirates, Guardians. Yeah, we can smoke them going into the trade deadline. I'm not so sure about that. Those are some dangerous teams. And they have to, they have to take them very seriously,
Starting point is 00:30:47 very, very seriously.
