Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX feedback podcast right here on PHNX, or otherwise known as an ML podcast, at least for tonight. PHNX, NL, NL, NL fan favorites here. Of course, my name is Derek Monta, always known as the mayor of PHNX, not PHNX, not for a little while, but of Phoenix, the city of Phoenix. guy filling in his vice mayor while jesse is in seattle it's mr electric shonda pause of course jesse friedman will uh return to us soon but we're going to have him join us from seattle here shortly ryan says go ahead derrick remind us how gallon will soon uh no longer be a dback i'm ready to be
Starting point is 00:00:50 we're not going down that route thank you no i was going a different route you're you're you're getting me you're getting me up to 11 already i don't want to be at 11 i don't want to be already there but uh very excited to have witnessed the night 93rd edition of Major League Baseball's All-Star game. It was an absolute exciting game. Like, couldn't ask for more. Coming down to the ninth inning like it did, coming down to Julio Rodriguez having a chance to win it
Starting point is 00:01:16 in his hometown there in Seattle and having the crowd behind him. It was all great. But the one thing I'll remember is how the Arizona Diamondbacks helped the National League and their nine game losing streak in the All-Star game. It's weird how all of a sudden you put a bunch of D-backs in the game and the National League wins for the first time in 12 years. He's not wrong.
Starting point is 00:01:36 There's four Diamondbacks in there. It's interesting, right? It's just something to think about. It's just something to make any conclusions off of it, but it's something to consider. Yes. Of course, this man put money on future Arizona Diamondback Shohei Otani to get the first hit of the game. He did not do that. But Yandy Diaz did go yard for the AL.
Starting point is 00:01:54 I did it on the under, though. On the board first. You did go with the under. That's right. That's a smart move. Because as we saw, both teams use their pitch. pitchers pretty strategically, including Zach Gallin, only getting one inning of work. He was the starter, though, and I'm sure he wouldn't want it. He wouldn't have wanted it
Starting point is 00:02:10 any other way. In fact, he said that this was the exact way he would have it so that he really doesn't have to change much about his preparation or how he approaches the game. In this case, he did his job. He went out there, gave up one hit, no runs, and one strikeout of the aforementioned Shohei Otani that ruined his bet. I don't buy the whole, like, the All-Star game, you did a walkout. Like there was no way your routine was the same as it was anyways. Like, it's not like you're a creature of habit.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Your habit was going to get ruined regardless of when you were pitching in this game. If anything, I would almost think it would be better to pitch later in the game so you can kind of get over all of the festivities and get back into the fact that you're playing a baseball game. You're a starting pitcher. You're not used to warming up in the open, right? Yeah, you're also not used to having a walkout song.
Starting point is 00:02:56 That's very true. And Zach Allen's not used to having success on the road. These are all new experiences for Zach Allen. Very much of the case. But it was fun. And of course, Gowan really enjoyed the experience. Another guy that enjoyed the experience, Corbyn Carroll. Unfortunately, he went 0 for two.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Our guy today, of course, Lourdes-Guriel, Purple Hair Magic. He almost hit a home run. Almost hit a home run. Oh, there's video in our slack of us reacting to that. That would have been a home run 10 years ago in an All-Star game. The last time National League won the All-Star game, that would have been a home run. Because it was called a home run and they wouldn't have been a home run. and they wouldn't have been able to review.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Ban the review is what we want. Ban the review. In the All-Star games. And the All-Star game. It was actually... No, not the playoffs. It was actually interesting because technically,
Starting point is 00:03:40 Lourdes-Guriel Jr. had the longest at-bat in the All-Star game because Dusty Baker pulled his pitcher before that play was reviewed. So Baker had to replace his pitcher mid-at-backed with Lordeus Gouriel still up there. But he did single. He did his job. He got on base.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Perdomo walked. There were Diamondbacks on the base path. they did their jobs. But Corby and Carroll very much did his job. And I know that he's been a big focal point of the weekend for national media, not only for the way that he has played and the way he's kind of emerged as a star, but obviously also with his connections to Seattle. And he talked about him on the broadcast.
Starting point is 00:04:17 And in fact, they even miced him up on the broadcast, which we were excited to see. But it's funny knowing him. We know him. We've been around him. And deep down inside, I knew how much he hated some of this attention. I knew how much he hated probably being miced up. He takes everything very seriously and methodically, so I have a feeling that he probably wasn't a huge fan of the miced-up situation.
Starting point is 00:04:41 And our very own Jesse Friedman caught up with Corby and Carol after the game and asked him about this exact thing with the microphone and him being mic'd up. How hard is it to play defense with people talking in your ear? It was all right. It was all right. I mean, I feel like, I actually said no to doing that a couple of times during the season. But I was like, it's the All-Star game.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Like, got to, you know, just tried to stay loose and have fun with it. You glad it's not like that all the time? Yeah. Oh, look at him. Look at the, find someone that smiles at you the way Corby Carroll smiles at Jesse Friedman. That's all I have to say. But, I mean, yeah, he was our big focal point. Like, Zach Gallen getting the start was great.
Starting point is 00:05:25 But we saw what both teams did as far as their pitchers go. Very few mistakes. This was a very close game. It's just decided by one run and one home run. As all-star games tend to be, it's almost like you have the best players on the planet playing, and it's really hard to hit baseballs when the best players are throwing them at you. Yeah. So the game stayed pretty low.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Well, we talked about this, right? We all know that the all-star game, and especially the home-run derby, which we will get to here momentarily, is kind of the best all-star game of any sport. And even Leah Merrill, who covers coyotes, covers hockey, He said that before, unprompted. We didn't have to, like, push her in that direction. While we were watching it, enjoying ourselves watching baseball, she just came over and said, this really is the best all-star game.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And the reason why, as Sean touched on before on a previous episode, really is that baseball is one of the few sports that you can't give a half effort. You have to go out there and you have to try to throw the ball hard. You have to try to hit the ball. You don't want to look like a punk or a chump in your all-star appearance. So you want to do well. You want to succeed whatever you're doing. right but like it's kind of one of the only all-star sports all-star games where everybody does go
Starting point is 00:06:35 kind of a hundred percent i mean maybe maybe a hundred percent yeah they're probably not going diving into the stands to to get foul balls and stuff like that but generally speaking like yeah it's a sport it's a non-contact sport like in football and hockey you lose the contact that makes the sport so fine because guys don't want to get hurt guys you don't hurt each other they don't want to hurt themselves. Right. And basketball is kind of the same thing. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:07:00 You want to play defense. Yeah, yeah. And, but in baseball, like, you're swinging the bat either way. You might as well try and hit the baseball. Like, there is no, you're not going to get up there and just watch three, like, three strikes and sit down. Like, well, and there's all sorts of different battles. There was a Raldas battling the sun out there in right field.
Starting point is 00:07:17 That was multiple times. There was, there's a lot of things going on in this game. But yeah, like, it's, it's baseball, right? It was funny because they actually. hit a home run over Corbyn Carroll's head that Yandi Diaz's home run went over his head while he was while he was being miced up and asking questions.
Starting point is 00:07:35 In all-star history, that two guys with the same last name have hit home runs. Oh, wow. Look at this guy. Look at this guy. We don't have Jesse here, but we have Sean here. I also just saw a tweet from John Boy. Well, it was just the last time the National League won the All-Star game, and it had four pictures. It was Buster Posey,
Starting point is 00:07:52 hugging Sergio Romo after the Giants won the World Series. David Stern shaking hands with Anthony Davis draft check for the NBA just the the call me maybe Carly Ray Jefferson cover photo and Coney 2012 remember that
Starting point is 00:08:06 oh remember Coney 2012 I remember that was crazy I also have something to show you guys what do you got? That's Corbyn looking at Jesse Look at him yep that's uh
Starting point is 00:08:19 look at that smile I've never had anyone that I've never had anyone that give me like that I was on a committed relationship for a year and I never got looked at like that Oh, man, that's something else. Oh, shit. Well, we have more from Corbyn Carroll, in fact. We have Corbyn Carroll on meeting some of his national league,
Starting point is 00:08:35 fellow national league players that he hasn't had a chance to meet. And he also talked about wanting to sneak over and get a bat from Luis Sarize here, because Luis Arise is just an incredible hitter that everybody wants to be like. But here's Carol on meeting some of those other guys. Just meeting some of the NL guys. seeing Julio again for the first time since High A. Just meeting some of these great players. I mean, and not only that, but I mean, he got to spend,
Starting point is 00:09:06 they had those great opening festivities with the past meritor, or all those past meritor players. So like for someone like Corby, that grew up watching those guys, watching Ken Griffey Jr., watching so many of those stars from the Seattle area, you know, do their thing, it was probably a fairly magical experience. However, the Diamondbacks have a season here to go and play and win.
Starting point is 00:09:30 And apparently, Jesse asked this if the All-Star experience had been exhausting. And Corbyn found it to be a little exhausting. Here's what he had to say about getting kind of run ragged here around the All-Star game and all the things they're doing up there in Seattle. Have these past few days been more exhausting for you or less exhausting than a normal few-day span in the majors during the season? Much more. Why do you say that?
Starting point is 00:09:57 It's been all good things, but I've been running around since I got here. You know, doing all sorts of cool different stuff. I meet all sorts of people. Got to meet some fans. But, yeah, I mean, now I think I'll have a little while. Just relax here and soak it all in with friends that I haven't seen yet. That's the key, right, is to just take a moment. Don't knock over our bubble.
Starting point is 00:10:22 I mean, that guy already got snubbed. to know he should be out there play but uh obviously corbin being from that area a lot of family of friends a lot of people that want to see him uh and and you know this stuff happens fast and i'm sure that this has all been an absolute blur for a person as young as as corbin right yeah i can't even imagine you know it's hard to sometimes remember to just stop and take in the moment sometimes because this is uh we talked about it but it's no joke like this isn't going to happen for another 30 years this is This kind of event happening in Seattle is not going to happen during Corbyn Carroll's career again. Career again, right?
Starting point is 00:10:59 Yeah. No, it is definitely a very dope experience for him. I can imagine how, like, I just can think about how I would be if I was even minorly successful and I went back to my hometown. Like, I would be all over the place. I would want everyone to see me. And I'm probably a worse person than Corbyn Carroll is. So it was probably a little different from him. He clearly had a lot of obligations.
Starting point is 00:11:21 So I can imagine he was kind of all over the place. Yeah, that's the one downside of the All-Star game. If you make it, you lose your break. You know the one moment, because I'm mostly from Phoenix, this is where I've lived the majority of my life. The one moment that made me feel like that just a little bit was when a high school English teacher asked me to come back to my high school to speak to the kids about,
Starting point is 00:11:45 like, the impact on my career and the fact that I'm doing what I'm doing now and everything like that. It's small, but sometimes it's just something as minor. I will never get asked to be. At least if I ever get asked to speak at a school, it'll be the last time. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's probably it. They don't want to, because they don't want to hear the truth.
Starting point is 00:12:04 You're going to go on for hours about the atrocities committed by cheese company. Well, that, but also, yeah, they don't, exactly. They don't want to hear the truth. They don't want to hear that. They don't want to hear about how nothing really matters. And that's easy degrees. You don't really have to. Oh, Susie.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Hey, Susie. Oh, look, look, Susie, we were, just about, it's like, it's like she knew what was coming up here because even though we wanted to talk about Louisa RISE being incredible and being unstoppable at the plate, even in the All-Star game, we right now, we're going to give our King Snake to the one and only representative from the Colorado Rockies. The first ever catcher of Rockies. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:12:41 One home run, two RBI, your absolute MVP for the National League team. And he deserves it, man, because what a huge home run. And what a moment there. Talk about stepping on home play it with some style. Yeah. I mean, it was obviously meant a lot. He's in his 30s. It was his first ever all-star game, his first ever at bat in that all-star game.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And he was the first Colorado Rockies catcher to ever make an all-star game. And he went yard in his one at bat or his first at bat. So like, that's a moment you probably feel a lot of weight in. And also like you probably feel a lot of weight in. and you also probably feel like like kind of getting off your chest, right? You did something for you.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Like he mentioned his family in the post game interview and all that kind of stuff. And he did it for the Rockies. He did it personally. Like there was a bunch of... How did it? Rocky win Kingsnake Man. Yeah, this is crazy.
Starting point is 00:13:36 It feels kind of gross. It does feel pretty gross. But I mean, the Rockies are like... Sorry, Susie, but they're like the little brother. Like, giving them props doesn't make me feel icky. We gave them our purple color. There's a little pat on the hat. No, I mean, honestly, though, it's cool as shit that somebody that was the sole representative for their team showed out, right?
Starting point is 00:13:55 Like, last year- We talked about a lot about the mandatory rule, like every team having a player and whether or not they should. But, I mean, if that doesn't happen, maybe the nationally doesn't win this game. No kidding. That's a good point. Well, last year, the dime bags had Joe Mansuply a reliever, so it wasn't exactly the same kind of vibe is happening. A little bit of a guy that could hit the most important home run of the day. But, you know, of course, we had Lordus, like we said, almost hit that home run.
Starting point is 00:14:20 That was an exciting moment. Pardomo didn't get a chance to do much, but he did walk in one of his at-bats. And, I mean, Pardomo is just Pardomo. So Jesse sent over a clip. He had a chance to talk to Pardomo. This is what he had to say. We got it quickly, so I just want to make sure we got that okay, Damon. All right, let's get Perdomo in here on his All-Star game experience.
Starting point is 00:14:43 What's your favorite part? Like to my bat That was my first time I don't know When God's gonna put me again here You know So I just need to To be healthy
Starting point is 00:14:54 And maybe next year Maybe a few more year Come back and play this game again When you get a taste of it Does it give you that hunger to come out? Oh yeah So hungry for sure I mean I'm always hungry
Starting point is 00:15:06 But like For this experience I will I need to be Yeah Oh yeah I love that The eagerness with which
Starting point is 00:15:13 he answered the question, like, does it make it more hug? He said, oh, yeah, yeah. It's hard to make it sound like, okay, now I'm more motivated, but you are. Yeah, especially for young guys, like, it's one thing when you've been to 10 of them, right? And you know you're one of the best players in the league. For a guy like this who's probably been doubted throughout a lot of his career. And obviously, we talked about struggled last year. Like, it probably does give him a lot of motivation to be like, you know, I'm here and I want to prove that I belong here and get back here.
Starting point is 00:15:41 It's awesome. I love her all the Pnomow. I had these moments when a friend of mine here in Phoenix played hockey. And oddly enough, hockey is like, you kind of have to have money to play hockey. So when we started going to hang out with his teammates, they tend to live in nice houses. And, like, you know, their parents were also, their parents were well off. They lived in the East Valley. We spent a lot of time having some fun times over at their houses.
Starting point is 00:16:07 But like, even as a teenager, it made me, like, want more. Yeah, yeah. Just being around some of these people's homes or their lives made me be like, I want this. I want to live like this. This is incredible. So, I mean,
Starting point is 00:16:21 maybe that's a good thing for these guys to be around such talent and players. To be around such big, you know, opportunities, right? Like they didn't shy away. And, and,
Starting point is 00:16:31 and, and, you know, I joke about Corbin, but I know Corbyn, uh, he, he has been a focal point of media and everything,
Starting point is 00:16:40 his entire life because he's always been such a, good baseball player. So I don't think he shies away from the pressure, but I do think that there's some cases where I just know how much he loves this game and how much he wants to give it as all, even in an All-Star game. So I imagine, even though he was okay with that, being miced up there. He probably deep down inside, probably hated it.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Yeah, absolutely. Our fucking chat needs to keep it in their pants. Relax. What is happening? Thirsting over here over the D-Backs. They want a sexy D-Backs calendar. Oh, yeah. Like fucking relax, guys.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Look. I mean, I agree, and I would also buy it, but relax. But it's going to be 12 months of Scott McGuff, and you guys know it. You know it's going to be 12 months of Scott McGuff. I don't know if you want that. You're not ready for that. Scott McGuff playing the saxophone in his month. Yeah, just that.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Scott McGuff in like a firefighter outfit. A picture of him blowing out a candle with no shirt on. That's all. Man, I played a dangerous game when I was watching the home-run derby. Pete Alonzo and Luis Robert Jr. in the finals, obviously that didn't work out once Pete Alonzo got knocked out by an incredible round from Julio Rodriguez.
Starting point is 00:21:14 And the worst round ever from his pitcher. Yes, yes. No kidding. Julio Rodriguez hit 41 home runs in the first round, a new record for the home run derby surpassing Vladdy and his 40 that he got. But it was just a wild thing. So I knew my bet was over pretty quickly. So then in the middle of Randy, or Rosarina's second round,
Starting point is 00:21:39 I put, I got him at like plus $500. Oh, damn. And then I almost got Vladdy at like plus $600 when, when I saw J. Rod start to, start to falter. I was almost hedging my,
Starting point is 00:21:51 like I was almost going to win no matter what. I bet on, I bet on Vladdy off rip. Yeah? Yeah, I bet on him before the one run derby. Nice. Well, he was your winner. He also set a record with 26 dingers in the final round.
Starting point is 00:22:05 Did you have a favorite breakout star of this home run derby? Oh, Adley Rushman. Yeah. I mean, ban the bracket format. It's ridiculous. Death to the bracket format. Yeah. But his performance is awesome.
Starting point is 00:22:20 Yeah, but hitting from both sides of the plate. Hitting from both sides of the plate was unbelievable. It's legendary status. Yeah, that was immediately. So much fun. that is. Super chat from Tyrannical Goat 12. 999. Let's go. What's up? Tyrannical Goat?
Starting point is 00:22:33 He says future Dback Lorenzen looked good. Also love seeing the milkman, make Shohei look silly. Great show, y'all. Thank you. We appreciate you. And yes, Zach Allen absolutely made show hey look silly. Much to the stricken of this band. My wallet, particularly.
Starting point is 00:22:48 He wasn't happy about that, but he was happy about putting that money on Vladdy. And just how cool of a moment was it for Vladdy? you know to win like I feel like two guys really wanted to win three guys really wanted to win this it was Julio Rodriguez
Starting point is 00:23:04 it was Pia Lanzo and it was Blatty I'm not saying the other guys weren't interested I'm just saying they didn't there was a different kind of motive they didn't have that same look in their eye like Guerrero knows that he was robbed the year he hit 91 he has a goddamn shirt that says 91 on it
Starting point is 00:23:20 because that's how many home runs he hit in a single home run derby that's fucking crazy to think about 91 home runs. The fact that Julio Rodriguez hit 41 in a, what, four minute period of time, that's nuts. That is crazy. Like, these guys are absolute beasts, and they just continue to break each other's record year after year.
Starting point is 00:23:40 But, I mean, this was it, man. Honestly, like, without exciting the derby was, without exciting the All-Star game, it just proved what we had said before we came in here, which is the All-Star festivities for Major League Baseball are not to be missed. Even if you don't know anything about baseball, even if you don't root for a team, you can watch this. You can enjoy the camaraderie between these guys, especially like during the derby when all these guys show up even though they're not in it. They just chill on the field and watch it. And see having guys like players interview other players.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Yes. Like the Boba Shet clip, what he said. You guys were talking Spanish. Like it's such good content. Yeah, that's awesome. But it's the kind of stuff we want to see. You know what I mean? It really is.
Starting point is 00:24:19 It's the kind of stuff that like we as fans love. I think it's just that human element when, you know, baseball, it's just not allowed to be this fun during the season. I don't know why. I don't get it. I don't have a reason for it. But the league sucks is why. I mean, the powers that be suck.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Like who is it, though? Like, whose fault is it to blame? I don't know. The fact that we just take this shit too seriously? Well, I mean, is it umpires, like threatening dugouts and stuff. Like, what part of it is like, who is that fun? I mean, it's a combination of things. I mean, A, obviously guys are going to be taking it.
Starting point is 00:24:53 more seriously during the regular season. So you're not going to get the, like, during games that matter, you're not going to get the extent of the antics that you get during the game. But still, like, I mean, I feel like it just starts with Rob Manfred and all the owners. Like, first off, Manfred, like I talked to you about it earlier, like Manfred getting visibly upset when he was getting booed at the draft. Is that not what all commissioners do? Like, he clearly is just out of touch.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Yeah, it doesn't get it. That's how, that's, that's what happens when fans are at drafts. Every single league, go watch literally any other draft. It's what happens. It happens to Adam Silver, and he's like the most like commissioner in sports. So, yeah, I mean, I just think the league, I just think the people that make decisions in the league don't really have an understanding of what makes the sport interesting. Even if it's Lourdes-Guriel making sandcastles with Gatorade cups. Like, we love that shit.
Starting point is 00:25:44 Like, that is the exact type of thing that we were talking about. But, you know, another thing was like, tonight, how, how. It was a small thing, but to see an Arizona Diamondback hit a home run, even though it was taken away from us, thanks to the bastards review, the replay. The Lordis Guriel home run was incredible. And I mean, it's like the joy that that caused is just. The video that will never see the light of day of us celebrating. I know.
Starting point is 00:26:15 It's of the home run. It's electric. You would have thought that DeBax just won the World Series. I was smacking the more furniture being like, I told you. and laughs. I didn't tell you anything. I didn't say shit. I mean,
Starting point is 00:26:27 I didn't do this. Somebody said the other day when Perdomo got nominated for the All-Star Game or got notified that he was nominated or in it. Yeah. You know, him running, him getting up and running was big dog Zumi energy, right? And like, that's what we had when Lord has hit that home wrong. And it was big dog Zumi energy. Mark Salera, aka Don's Bread, I love you in the super chat for $10, he said, is this
Starting point is 00:26:52 where I buy? my sexy debaq wait scroll that is this where i buy the sexy debacks calendar yes this is this is where we're taking our pre-orders for that but uh i don't have accused you of of agreeing an agreement where you have to make a sexy derrick calendar if the debacks run the n-l west no this is true nobody wants a sexy derrick calendar do they do they do they i don't know the chat seems kind of like they want it i don't know we'll figure this out we'll talk later we'll talk later about that but Jesse is going to be joining us soon. I think he's going to be popping in here.
Starting point is 00:27:24 But we have some more from Jesse because he was there. Pardomo talked about this wonderful home run from Lourdes Geryl Jr. And this is what Pardomo had to say about seeing LGJ hit that dinger that we thought was a dinger. That should have been home run. That was a homer for sure. That was a homer for sure. I don't know why the challenger, but that was a homer for sure. That was sad.
Starting point is 00:27:45 He disappointed. Does this surprise you at all that they have challenges in the All-Star game? Uh, not really, but I mean, you know, the challenge is part of the game, right? But that was how man. It's like the pitch clock or anything else. Nobody wants this shit in the All-Star game. Like our friend Owen that covers football or soccer, as we call it, but he calls it football. He said, like, this is an exhibition game.
Starting point is 00:28:10 What are we doing here? You're challenging it. As an outsider, I couldn't agree more with him saying that. I mean, Jerry, he was good about it. He said, you know, it's part of the game. but just him being like just vehemently denying what is probably reality. Yeah. Like it wasn't a home run.
Starting point is 00:28:25 They reviewed it. They watched video of it. It did not. It went foul and he was just like it was a home run. We saw it. And he looked like he believed it and he was sincerely disappointed and they got overturned. But he hasn't seen video. Well, yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Right. So he's just still going with his gut reaction from, but he knows deep down inside it. Yeah. I mean, he knows that they reviewed it. They overturned it. There must have been clearing. There were like six people doing the foul side. I get it.
Starting point is 00:28:45 They're American League fans, but still I don't care. They knew what they saw. But here is Lurie. Curtis with our buddy Alex from the Arizona Diamondbacks talking about the home run himself. Were you surprised that it was overturned? The sorrentices that you had a little bit of. I don't think it was a little weird that you can challenge here. I didn't think it was going to pass.
Starting point is 00:29:08 I had no idea you could challenge here in the All-Star game. So I didn't think it was going to happen at the time. Do you think it's a little weird that you can challenge in the All-Star game? A little rarro that you can do the challenge? here in a game of Streets? I think yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:21 I'd have to let it be a lot of that's more natural. I think so. They should
Starting point is 00:29:27 just let us play naturally and just let the things run. I mean... I'm... I mean... I'm...
Starting point is 00:29:32 Clear that sure. Well, like, and here's the thing is Jesse keeps asking kind of those questions
Starting point is 00:29:37 about the... Yeah. About the challenge and I get where he's going with that. But I also think like...
Starting point is 00:29:44 I mean, him and Perdom had different answers. Well, I mean, I think that they both think that like it's part of the game, right? I think that they, you know, they, like, you're not going to change it. And it's
Starting point is 00:29:54 kind of like, I mean, Lord has wants them to. Well, here's the thing. We are going to talk about potentially changing the pitch clock here. We got that coming in a couple of days because there is some talk where they apparently want to soften the pitch clock for the playoffs. But it kind of comes to this same question. Like, do we really want to change things when it comes down to, you know, the getting used to playing a game the way that they play it? Right. Like they play it during the regular season one way. Do we really want to start changing the rules specifically just because we find some of the things to not be the purest form of baseball? Yeah, I mean, yeah. As far as this concerned, like you said, we'll talk about it later in the week. But like it would be one thing if they were making the rules more restrictive, but making the rules like freer, I don't think that would really be that big of a deal. Like getting rid of the pitch clock or getting rid of challenges. Like it's not going to, I don't think there's a, there's a.
Starting point is 00:30:49 I don't think that would really change a whole lot. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I just, I want it to be fun. Yeah, no, I want the All-Star game to be fun and encumbered by things like challenges. But we also want it to be right, right? Because if we don't, then we'll forever talk about how that Lord of Scurriel Jr. Home will run.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Well, it was not a real run, yeah. Or whatever. But it doesn't matter. We'll get over it. And we'll get over it with our friends from OG's brands. Because even though it's getting toasty here in the valley, we are still looking forward to what OGs is cooking up. And they are refreshing us with their pink lemonade gummies.

We are now joined by the one and only Jesse Friedman coming to us from Seattle. He's done talking to all the Arizona Diamondbacks after their wonderful All-Star experience. And we have Jesse. Jesse. Jesse bailed on us, I think. Jesse will be back in a minute.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Jesse left us. Jesse just about. Oh, Jesse back now. Maybe. Maybe we have to see this. time we'll see i think we do yeah do we have this time jesse jesse everybody hey how are you you the losing streak is over the national league with the help of the arizona diamondbacks smash that streak uh and they are winners tonight jesse what is what what is the mood like with
Starting point is 00:33:36 their fellow arizona diamondbacks out there in seattle i mean i think lordis was a little sad understandably so right uh yeah i know i i heard you guys talking earlier about how, you know, there's this video of you guys celebrating the, the Lordus Homer that will never see the light of day. Big Zumi energy. Big Zumi energy. It was actually not a home run after all. But, yeah, I mean, everyone after the game pretty much said the same thing, especially Heraldo
Starting point is 00:34:05 Perdomo. I think you guys might have played the clip earlier just about how great of an experience this is and how Geraldo, you know, obviously really unprecedented for him to find his way here this early in his career and given, you know, the kind of season that he had last year. But he has, he has this hunger now, right? Like once you play on this stage, once you get this experience, it's something you never forget. And it's something you feel like you have to have the next year. And yeah, it'll be fun to watch, you know, not only Pardomo, but some of these other D-BACs, All-Stars as they continue to pursue that in future seasons. But it is an important experience.
Starting point is 00:34:40 You know, that hunger that you're talking about that it builds. It's one of those things that starts building that confidence inside of you as a player that you can be there again, that you can play around these guys. And I think being around them kind of makes it a little bit like these guys aren't the superstars that sometimes you can even think they are as a fellow baseball player, right? Like you get to be on the same team and kind of just feel like you're one of these guys that are some of the greatest players in baseball. Yeah, it's true.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Haraldo Perdomo, I know we tweeted it sometimes. people might have seen the video on our Twitter account. But Pardomo was taking grounders with Nolan Aeronado before the game, right? In what other universe is Heraldo Prudomo, like, picking Nolan Aeronado's brain? And it was at third base, too. After Aronado is straighting here. We've all been talking about that they were just, he was asking him where's a good place to move and where all the good food spots around Chase Field were.
Starting point is 00:35:38 That's what's what Nolan was picking his brain about. It's, I mean, it's kind of funny. but building relationships too is one of those things that could potentially be important down the line. I know it's a far-fetched kind of idea, but we do have the trade deadline coming up here at the end of the month. And at times, you know, with so many Diamondbacks players there at the All-Star game, you never know when someone like Nolan Aeronato might be like, hey, they seem to got a good group of guys over there. I mean, it's not saying they have any say in the trade or anything, but at the same time, it just gets the feeling going that maybe some of these guys want to be here in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:36:14 Yeah, I mean, I tried to ask Geraldo about that conversation with Nolan, and he was very cryptic about it. He wouldn't be it. I'm led to believe that it was defensive pointers that Geraldo doesn't want to share publicly, but who knows? You know, maybe they're talking about, you know, the trade deadline and, you know, trying to persuade the diamondbacks front office to make a move for Nolan. There actually was a, I think John Heyman wrote a story a couple days ago about the potential impending fire sale for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has some quotes from Nolan Aronado talking about how he might be included in that in his own right. But yeah, we probably shouldn't get too far down that road. I don't really foresee the Diamondbacks bringing Nolan Aronado in over the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:36:58 But you're right. It is, I think that's a fun part of this for everyone is, you know, just getting to reconnect with, you know, potentially former teammates, you know, guys that, you know, maybe guys saw way down in the minors. Corby and Carroll talked about how good it was to see Julio again. first time he'd seen him since since low A when they cross paths way back in the day. So, so yeah, there's just so many fun aspects to an event like this. Well, and we talked about Shohei Otani's comments that sounded very much like Otani loves the city of Seattle, would love to play there, loves their fans, loves the weather, loves everything. And it was very, you know, that's kind of problematic.
Starting point is 00:37:39 And you have the angels saying that they, according to the broadcast, they have no one, attention on trading Otani and that they're going to do everything they can to keep him in Los Angeles and by Los Angeles we mean the American League and not those other guys. It was I do have to say real quick, you guys probably heard it. I'm sure you did when you watched the game. There were a come to Seattle chance, right? When he stepped into the box. Against Zach Gallin in the first inning. Who is to say that those come to Seattle chance were Shohei Otani and not actually Zach Gallen, right? Who's who to say? Well, after his one hit scoreless inning, I would say that that may be on the table.
Starting point is 00:38:16 How was Gallant feeling? Did you get a chance to talk to him at all after the game or after his outing? Yeah, we did. You know, Gallin was just kind of soaking up every ounce of this that he possibly could. Of course, Gallen is hyper competitive. And as you'd expect, he did not at all turn that off going into even an exhibition game like this. He unfortunately, he don't have video, but he talked after the game about how Dan Heron, Diamondbacks pitching strategist, close friend of Zach Gallen,
Starting point is 00:38:46 how he actually prepared reports for all these guys in advance to Jack Gallen before the game. So not much more of a Zach Allen storyline. Oh, my God. Zach Gallen flew with a binder. He flew with a binder that Dan Aaron prepared for him. I know he did. Oh, man, that's incredible.
Starting point is 00:39:05 Well, real. Anything else from Seattle? I mean, I know you've really enjoyed your time there, but like we've, just talked a bit about it. I mean, I know we cover this sport so often we sound like, you know, biased about it. This just proved. I felt like with the way the home run derby went and the way that the All-Star game went, that this is just an incredible all-star experience and the best one that sports has to offer, not only with how competitive everything was, but with how much fun it looked like all the guys were having, being a part of it. Yeah, this experience just accentuated all of that
Starting point is 00:39:41 for me. I might have talked about it the other day. I was I was at the futures game in the home run derby back in 2019, just as a fan. So I've gotten a little taste of the all-star festivities. But man, it is, it is just a packed few days. I mean, it is, it is a smattering of baseball awesomeness, just like one day right after another. It just seems like it's nonstop. Right on Saturday, it's the futures game. We're talking with Jordan Lawler. We're talking with Ryan Bliss. We still have some content there. We're going to unleash over the next few days. know, there's Jackson holidays there. There's all these incredible prospects that are going to play a huge role in the future of baseball.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Sunday, right, is the draft. We talked on Sunday about the draft. Not Major League Baseball still has some work to do there, but obviously that's a really important event for the game. And, you know, that's what ushers in the next generation of baseball talent. And then over the last couple days, the home run derby yesterday, you know, that's when media availability was for all of the players. You've got baseball celebrities walking around everywhere.
Starting point is 00:40:40 the Troy Hawkins, C.C. Sabathia. People might have seen our picture of Chris Young, of course, works for MLB Network. There's just like baseball legends everywhere. Ken Griffey Jr., Adrian Beltray, Raula Bonnis. They're just all over the place. And it really is, I fully agree, you know, from what I've seen these last few days, I kind of already believed it. But I really believe it now that the all-star facilities that baseball has to offer are really second to none in the sports landscape. And I mean, I don't know, man. This year felt. felt big, it felt good. I know we kind of gave some grief to the all-star game jerseys.
Starting point is 00:41:20 You took some pictures, and once those pants hit the internet, people did not like them, Jesse, but this guy next to me, he defended the look of the National League. He wanted to say that in observing closely, the pants were in fact dark blue and not black with lighter blue piping. The pants made sense, Because if you look at it closely, the jersey has like a dark navy piping, like lining on the collar.
Starting point is 00:41:46 And then the pants are that same dark color. And it's the same dark color that's in the darkest parts of the jersey. And then it has a lighter blue stripe on the side. That's the lighter blue of the jersey. My problem with the uniforms is the hats because the light blue looks super out of place with the rest of all the dark blue. I agree with that. But you take the hat away and I think it looks a lot better. They definitely looked a little black, especially when you compared them to the mostly lighter blue.
Starting point is 00:42:10 jerseys. I think definitely they could have done better. I think they should have just gone gray pants. You were there. Did they look better? Sean, I have to be honest with you. One of us was here in person, and one of us wasn't. John, these pants were black and they did not look good. End of story. I don't feel like we have to continue this conversation. No, you have the, you have the right to make the final judgment there. You were there. That's 100% why we say you there to look at the jerseys and no other reason. It was fashion related. It was purely fashion related. Speaking of fashion, Zasatts, Gowan wore the snake skin belt again today. Zach Gowan's pregame look with the with that sweater on and the dude everyone not
Starting point is 00:42:47 named Corbyn Carroll brought it before the draft like or before the game. Corbin's drip was very Corbyn. Ask it was very subdued but everyone else. Look crazy. Every outfit Corbyn wears it has you have to be able to play baseball in it. He has to be able to play anytime he needs to be able to feel the ground ball or five important factors in anything he wears at any time whether it's a red carpet of fair or not. He has to be able to play the outfield at any point. Jesse, did you eat any seafood? Did you have more seafood or just the salmon? I think just the salmon. Frankly, I've eaten about one meal a day, pretty much whatever they have here. I knew you were going to say that. That's that's
Starting point is 00:43:28 kind of what I eat. They haven't had seafood the last few days. So did you drink water? Did you drink plenty of water? Honestly, I'm not going to lie. I am very thirsty right now. I know. I knew it. I told you. Drink water. It's the one thing I tell you to do while you're there. They had like, so I'm in the auxiliary box, right? I'm not in the, I'm not in the prestigious main press box. I got to talk to something about that. Which is nice. I mean, we have a lot of open space, right? I can kind of show, I show around. Like, you know, there's a little, there's a little bit of room to breathe over here. Whereas there, there isn't in, in some other parts of the, like the main press box, not so much. It's really crammed over there. But yeah, they don't really have like a beverage station that I'm aware of. You kind of like go up and get a soda for like a couple hour period.
Starting point is 00:44:17 But outside of that, I didn't really see anything. I'm sure they had some sort of arrangement there that I just didn't pay attention to. But I'm going to pretend that it was their fault and not mine. Let's just go with that. Fair enough. Fair enough. That way I can get angry at someone else and not you. Well, hurry up and get back here to Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:44:33 We have a lot of trade deadline stuff to talk about. And we need you to help us out with that. But we are going to get started on that. tomorrow so i'm sorry you're not here for it i promise we'll talk about the most far-fetched trade trade candidate we we we're all it's all it's all it's all it's show hey and and and more nolan aranato conspiracies yeah we'll get those out of the way before you get back so that we can talk about real trade what it would take to get rafael devors here yeah that big ass contract yeah have fun guys have thanks thanks jesse safe travels we'll see you soon we'll see on friday all right take care guys
Starting point is 00:45:09 All right. Well, oh, man, I'm going to worry about him the whole time. I'm not going to stop worrying about him. I'm not going to get any sleep. Yeah, I'm not, not even a little bit. But we have so much more to talk about this week, including a bunch of trade deadline talk. We still waiting for some updates on what's going to happen with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Diamond Sports Group. And, of course, we're still going to look at some of these targeted or, excuse me, draft picks, not targeted draft picks, but draft picks that the Diamondbacks pick up, picked up on dates two and days three of the MLB draft. make sure to keep it locked here all week long, but of course, make sure to go get yourself
