Starting point is 00:00:00 We're going to need how many streaming apps to watch the entire baseball season in 26? We're talking about the new media rights deals that went down yesterday, and we're going to try to sort out where we're going to watch all of our baseball games in 2026. Also, a trade rumor has Freddie Peralta linked to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but is the cost far too high for a one-year rental of an ace pitcher? We have all of this and more in 30 seconds. Don't you go in?
Starting point is 00:00:26 Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Keybacks podcast. from Studio K. Presented by our friends at Circle K. It is I, your mayor of PHNX occasionally known as a man who will need entirely too many streaming apps to watch baseball in 2026. Thrilled to have you guys here. Thrilled to be talking once again about baseball. This show is brought to you by our friends game time. Go download that game time app.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Create an account and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase on those already low ticket. prices, his last minute ticket deals, terms do apply. And I'm not alone. He is back. I'm back. It is the peanut butter to my jelly. It is the leche to my cafe. It is the one, the only Damon Farrell here on the ones and twos, Damon Dogg. We got a lot of new ways to watch baseball, I guess, in 2026. I think things got more complicated than less complicated, and I still don't understand that aspect of it. That's what baseball needed, Derek. It's exactly what baseball needed. It's exactly what baseball needed.
Starting point is 00:01:48 And Ryan in the chat says, can PHNX come up with a streaming service that carries sports and local channels, maybe a few other television programs? I would happily host a late night after dark show where I'm allowed to say the F word a lot. I would volunteer for that right now. And I would love, I would love Ryan to help uncomplicate this situation and streamline things for people that want it. Also, I'm still a satellite subscriber, and I feel like I've won here after hearing the news yesterday. MLB has new media rights deals with three companies, and now baseball will be spread across the landscape even more. Major League Baseball announced that it has a new set of contracts with ESPN, NBC Universal, and Netflix through the 2028 season. The most important factor here is it sounds like ESPN is slowly absorbing.
Starting point is 00:02:39 MLB.tv. That is the most relevant news to Arizona Diamondbacks fans out there wondering where they are going to watch their team in 2026. In fact, ESPN now holds the exclusive in-market streaming rights to Arizona Diamondbacks games. This is a $1.65 billion deal over three years. ESPN adds MLB.tv and therefore the rights to out-of-market games for 30 teams and in-market games for six teams,
Starting point is 00:03:12 including the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cleveland Guardians, the Colorado Rockies, the San Diego Padres, and the Minnesota Twins, and then recently added to that group is the Seattle Mariners. So those are teams
Starting point is 00:03:24 that do not have regional television contract deals and their streaming rights are basically owned by MLB. And the Mariners do join that group, again, that do not have regional sports deals. So all local streaming for the Diamondbacks will still be available on MLB platforms for next season. They're going to have, I think they're going to kind of ease us into this transition
Starting point is 00:03:48 where once, you know, 2026 comes and goes, we will start to see MLB.tv itself go and now baseball games will just be featured on the ESPN app. This does not affect any of us that watch the games locally. If you do have Cox, direct TV, any other way that you watch games, you will still be able to watch games the exact same way. The article, the piece by Andrew Marshon on The Athletic also states that everything is expected to remain the same. The question I've been getting from people is if I subscribe to ESPN, does that mean now I get Diamondbacks games? No, it does not.
Starting point is 00:04:27 These are going to be like a alic heart kind of addition to your account so you can add on the package. like you can get the separate package for debacks games, you'll be able to get the entire bundle of MLB so you can watch the whole package for like 200 bucks. Still no information on blackout rules and how blackout rules might apply here to these packages and other situations, but they do say that fans,
Starting point is 00:04:56 this is according to MLB's press release, fans will have the ability to purchase these subscriptions either independently as a part of a bundle with MLB.tv or packaged with an ESPN subscription. So there it is. There's that. It's going to be very complicated. It's going to be very confusing. And for the time being, I think people are going to be very upset about it. I know there's a lot of people in general that are tired of having to have multiple apps in order to view all of this stuff. It's also frustrating that you pay a solid fee thinking you're going to get to watch all of your baseball team's games. And then you find out this Friday's game is on Apple TV, which by the way, that's not going away either. In order for you to watch to watch, to watch everything in baseball in 2027, you're going to need seven different apps. You're going to need Netflix. You're going to need ESPN and you're going to need NBC.
Starting point is 00:05:50 But besides that, you're going to still need TBS, Fox, you're going to need Apple TV, TV, you're going to need MLB network. Like you're going to need so many different apps now in order for you to be able to watch everything. ESPN and MLB, they opted out of a contract that they already had. had, but they come together on this new agreement. ESPN will not cover Sunday night baseball anymore. ESPN will no longer be the home of the home run derby, and ESPN will no longer have postseason games. In exchange for that, it will broadcast 30 exclusive weeknight games during
Starting point is 00:06:24 the season for national audiences, the key word there being exclusive. Those are going to be games that you are going to need to have access to ESPN in order to watch. And again, this is another case where they are trying to bring MLB to a wider audience, but at the same time, you know, it does involve and impacts Arizona Diamondbacks games and other teams games. If you do think that you're going to get every single game by simply subscribing to the baseball package, that does not seem to be the case. Baseball is back now on NBC Universal. We'll be back on NBC.
Starting point is 00:06:58 That's a little bit easier to access, much like Fox. Those are channels that you don't necessarily need to have. those streaming apps for, you could just have some rabbit ears, or, you know, I think that there's more modern ways to do that in today's society than rabbit ears. But regardless, NBC will take over now doing Sunday night baseball. They will also have the wildcard round of the postseason, and they are going to have the MLB draft. That part's exciting for me, because I think since they are trying to make baseball a commodity and trying to make these events big deals because they have the exclusive rights to them, hopefully we will see better coverage.
Starting point is 00:07:34 of these events. And quite frankly, the draft is one of those things that MLB needs better coverage of. We need it to be more exciting. We need them to hype people up more about baseball and these young prospects. I get it. It takes so long for prospects to make their way to a major league club and impact an actual baseball in our minds that sometimes, you know, the MLB draft is not very exciting, you know, but overall, look at the groundwork that's been laid, look at how important and some of these young players have been. Look at how immediately a player like Trey I Savage was impacting his team and other players. You know, look at Philip Abner for the Arizona Diamondbacks and how quickly he moved
Starting point is 00:08:13 through the minor league system just this year to get to a major league level. So I think that if you make the MLB draft more of an event and put a little bit more pageantry into it, I think the interest will be there. NFL has done a great job with that. We've talked about that many times on the show, but NFL makes everything throughout their off season into an event, everything into some sort of, you know, big deal. And it's, it could be the dumbest crap. It could be the second day of the NFL draft that nobody really cares about. They are still treating it like it's an important, you know, event and still trying to get you
Starting point is 00:08:47 in there to watch it and stick around and be a part of it, right? So NBC covering that, I think will help with that. Also, also, Damon, ready to riot because I am. NBC's first national broadcast will be the Arizona Diamondback season opener on March 26 when they did. visiting world champion Los Angeles Dodgers on the day that the Dodgers are going to hang their World Series banner up at Dodgers Stadium. It's as with many things in sports, Derek, this is a best case and worst case scenario at the same time. We're going to ruin that day for them.
Starting point is 00:09:23 We either ruin their ring ceremony or we're a part of more history that includes our rivals, which seemingly the Diamondbacks, as I think Ernesto said in a show a few days ago, seems like we're in the background of every like big moment in MLB history somehow. Like at least since we've been a franchise, it's like, oh, Barry Bonds hit a million home runs against this team. Like it doesn't matter where you go, oh, now we have Otani to deal with. Awesome. The two greatest players of our lifetime. Let's ruin it.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Let's ruin it for them. I love that. I love that angle. I do too. 18 games will be on Peacock on Sundays for MLB Sunday leadoff And also they will have All sorts of other games throughout the season
Starting point is 00:10:08 Telemundo de Portes will show MLB games in Spanish Throughout the season I'll be part of the NBC package And then again The NBC Peacock will live stream One out of market game every day of the season So that's kind of fun If you have a Peacock subscription
Starting point is 00:10:26 You want to go get one The big thing that bothers me is now for you to watch All-Star Weekend, you are going to have to have, Damon, three separate apps just to watch all of All-Star Weekend. What a disaster. The All-Star Futures game will be on NBC and Peacock. Meanwhile, Netflix gets into the baseball game. They have acquired the rights to opening day primetime game, the home run derby, and the Field of Dreams game in Iowa.
Starting point is 00:10:57 So for you to watch the futures game, you're going to need to have the Peacock or NBC app. You have to have Netflix for you to watch the Home Run Derby. And then, of course, you have the All-Star game, which will still be on Fox, I believe, according to all of this. So a lot of stuff, Field of Dreams game, that does return. It's going to feature the Twins versus the Phillies coming out of the cornfield. And that will be on Netflix. according to this report, NBC will pay $200 million per season. Netflix pays $50 million per season for what appears to be three events.
Starting point is 00:11:34 I think Netflix kind of got fleeced here a little bit. And then... Over and Derby is huge, though, to be fair. No, I agree with that. And also, I think the Field of Dreams game is huge, right? Like, that is right up there with any premier marquee event and baseball. Even though it's a regular season game, even though in the grand scheme of things, it's not very important, it still very much feels
Starting point is 00:11:56 like it. It still very much feels like it. Folding Chable, I don't That's R.A. I'm pretty sure. I kind of love that name though. Folding Chable is pretty good. Says, are we getting any gimmicky simulcast? I don't know. We need to get Nickelodeon involved here somehow, right? We need to have SpongeBob
Starting point is 00:12:11 running the bases. We need to get the Rugrats or the Rugrats still a thing. I'm dating myself very much. This mustache already does a good job of that. I do look like every 80s pitcher villain in a baseball movie and I'm okay with that but why did it why is everyone's names the ads again I don't know I don't know it didn't happen early here you could see like Ryan
Starting point is 00:12:33 regular Ryan and then it yep once we went at Ryan yeah what we got into the show we transformed our names but I think it's everybody revolting against having all of these apps and and needing to sign into all of this stuff so they're putting their usernames on screen I mean it's just classic technology Derek really we're getting screwed left in Yeah, see, and that's another problem. I'm going to have to make sure that all of these apps work. I'm going to have to make sure that there's no more fights between companies to change something suddenly. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:05 And again, my question is, is do you have all the apps? Because on top of that, you're going to need Fox, Apple TV, and TBS Turner, who will remain partners with MLB through 2028. So if you want to watch everything now, you will need, in fact, seven streaming services. Fox, Apple, TBS, NBC, Netflix, ESPN, and the MLB network. Good luck. Good luck to you all. Tell me again how this is better than cable. Look, I know I have probably paid entirely too much to hold on to my direct TV account over the years,
Starting point is 00:13:38 but to me it's worth it. I was just having a conversation with Erriton earlier that my friend Josh, who's probably listening to this podcast right now, randomly canceled our joint peacock account simply because we were both very mad at WWE, and that also involved the ESPN. It had something to do with this event called Russell Palooza, that even though we were both ESPN subscribers, we didn't have access to the ESPN app yet. We still don't.
Starting point is 00:14:03 We're not getting that until late November, according to the email I received from somebody who I screamed at in their customer service department. But, yeah, because of that, he canceled Beacock. I haven't thought about not having an app in so long because I either subscribe to everything or already have access to it, through my satellite provider, right? And that's, again, a reason why it feels like a win
Starting point is 00:14:26 to have stayed with my satellite provider for all of these years. But, you know, overall here, this is a case where I just, I don't want to have to chase all of this stuff down. And I can already imagine the disappointment, the anger that people are going to feel. Think about this year. Every time the pain that we went through, every time a game was on Roku, even though it was a free service to sign up for or Apple TV that many people don't have. Apple TV, also a weird channel where I can't describe what any of their shows are about without giving away a significant surprise in the first or second episode. That's another weird thing about their shows. But I do love- I haven't noticed that. Yeah, like I can't tell you what severance is about without ruining severance.
Starting point is 00:15:09 I can't definitely can't tell you- To be fair, I don't even- Pluribus is amazing, but I can't tell you what it's about it'll ruin it. I think I've watched all of severance and I'm not sure I, still know what it's about. Yeah, no, you're right. Is Pluribus good? Oh, yeah. Oh, it's a must watch. Must watch. It's from Vince. Yeah, Vince Gilligan. Gilligan, right? That did, that did Breaking Bad. And this is nothing like Breaking Bad. This is more definitely, the best thing I can say is it's very like twilight zoneish. It's got like a supernatural bit of a supernatural feel to it, but I can't even, I feel like I've already told you too much. I've ruined it as it. Well, my roommates watch it. They've been telling me
Starting point is 00:15:45 a little bit. There's like a hive mind thing going on. Ah, stop. Why? That's too much. That's too much. You already did too much. But I will say this. When it comes to severance, I still haven't figured out if I'm the iny or the outy.
Starting point is 00:15:56 That I haven't figured out. But I think I'm the iny, but I kind of love this job. So I don't know. I think you on the show is the iny and you off the show is for sure the outy. Yeah, David gets to see another side of me after the show ends where I talk about how terrible I am. There's a reason you forget all of things in life when you do this podcast for once an hour a day. For sure. for sure. But also again, it's another
Starting point is 00:16:20 it's another reason why life is so complicated and all these streaming apps and all these services further complicated. Like, I get it. It's an Alicart thing, but like I was kind of alluding to there, there's going to be these moments where you as a fan go to watch something. You go to watch, you want to watch the Home Run Derby. You want to sit down and watch it. You expect it to be on TV because it's such a big national event and it's not. You know, it's not on TV. It's not on
Starting point is 00:16:45 an app you have access to. So again, plan accordingly before the 2026 season. Try to see what fits your budget makes the most sense. And most importantly, what's important to you, right? Like, again, most of us probably have access to most of these streaming services already, right? Most of us already have an Apple TV account or a Netflix account. But I know a lot of people out there don't. And more importantly, I know a lot of people out there have cut the cord and they kind of just go with the apps that they have. this is obviously a push from those other apps you don't have to make you sign up for them. And I also also say this. A lot of them do have free trials.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Just throwing that out there. That if maybe if you just want to watch one of it, just hop on one of those free trial offers when the time is right. But I think overall this is just another exhausting example of how Americans are kind of being taxed and fleeced and our money is going away. and we have less of it. And again, it's just kind of hard because sports like baseball are supposed to be sometimes an escape from that. And now if you go to watch the playoffs and don't have access to it any longer because it's exclusively on one of these apps, I mean, it's going to not be a reminder. It's not going to be a getaway from your problem.
Starting point is 00:18:01 It's just going to be a reminder once again of how much everything costs in 2025 and how hard it is to keep up with all of these costs. I do appreciate you guys so much, and I thank you guys for at least subscribing to us on this YouTube channel. That is free, and I'll remind you of that. But I'll also say if you are a supporters club member, like our favorite person who always welcomes everybody in the chat, Deborah. Love you, Deborah. She's a supporters club member. Shout out to Max for being a supporters club member. Again, there's another streaming service you can sign up for.
Starting point is 00:18:36 That's a supporters club. But that's way better, especially if you drop us those super chats. make sure to sign up for the Supporters Club. Get yourself access to exclusive content, exclusive emojis, and more importantly, get access to my heart. You are in my heart forever as a supporters club member. We're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break.
Starting point is 00:18:53 We are going to talk about a recent report linking the Arizona Diamondbacks to Freddie Peralta. Yes, he's an ace. Yes, he is an All-Star, but with just one year left on his contract, would he be worth the cost that the Diamondbacks would have to pay in a trade in order to bring him here and help them out in 2020. We're going to talk about it on the other side of this break.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Well, of course, tis the season for over $80 million in prizes over at Arizona Lottery. And I've said it before. I'll say it again, those fine folks at Arizona Lottery and their holiday scratchers, they always make for an amazing gift. In fact, it always outdoes whatever gift I put time and thought into to bring my loved ones. Everybody's more excited about the scratchers.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And that is because, of course, with scratchers, you can win up to 200, $150,000. There are millions of dollars in prizes. And of course, there are six festive scratchers to choose from right now, including cash countdown, which has prizes again, up to a quarter of a million dollars. They also have my favorite, which is candy cane cash. And that's just simply because it smells like delightful candy canes, regardless of whether you're going for the big money or going for the scratcher.
Starting point is 00:20:04 That's a scratch and sniff. You can dash to instant prizes with all sorts of holiday scratchers this season. And when it comes to holiday gift, holiday scratchers are the, the best place to start. They're made for gifting, whether it's a white elephant exchange, a stocking stuffer, just because there's always a chance your little gift could be worth millions. Play and gift today must be 21 or over to play. Love to play and spread holiday cheer with holiday scratchers from Arizona lottery. Rallyhouse, of course, is your go-to spot. It's our go-to spot. We got a little rally house bet going on here from our ASU and U of A guys that I can't
Starting point is 00:20:38 wait to see who we do. Loses. That's going to be exciting. But of course, regardless of who you're rooting for when that territorial cup comes along, you can get yourself fitted out at the rally house. They have shop locations in Tempe, Mesa and Glendale today. And if you haven't checked out Rally House, they got you covered with all your game day needs. Hats, jerseys, flags, it doesn't matter. They got you cover drinkwear, signage coolers for your tailgate. They even have babies diapers. Make sure that kid is swaddled in your favorite team's gear. They only carry Arizona sports teams too. So every time you visit a rally house, you're guaranteed to find something new, unique and that matches your game day vibe find your local rally house location and shop their
Starting point is 00:21:17 entire project assortment online rallyhouse.com today. Derek, I was inside rally house earlier today. Actually, it was the reason that I was a little bit late getting into the office and my God. Is it like Disneyland for a man like me and you? Like I'm walking around. I'm grabbing stuff off the walls Derek. I'm like, I'm like, what? I could redecorate my whole living room in this place for sure and more importantly get my closet right my closet has entirely too many uh too much sports gear in it and it's weird damon because it's really not a problem for me uh what the problem is is what do i do with my other clothes right like i do have to have like adult shirts that aren't roosevelts and that don't also say the sons or the diamond backs and cardinals on it that's very
Starting point is 00:22:08 difficult for i i see like you're preaching to the choir here i had a A lady friend of mine sent me a picture the other day of like some guy in like a button up being like, wow, if you dress like this, it would be awesome. And I was like, over my dead body. I was like, do you know who you're? If my dead body is in merch, I go into the ground. Barry me in an Arizona football jersey. Oh, haunt you for the rest of eternity. I promise it.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Barry me in my Haroldo perdomo jersey. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? But backward so that the perdomo part is on your chest near your heart. Oh, for sure. You know, that's the way that we're working around here. Well, we want to add another guy to our heart statement. And, I mean, I don't hate this idea, but I do hate how much it might cost.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Bleacher Report has an article out there linking the Arizona Diamondbacks to a potential trade with the brewers for a starter, Freddie Peralta. And again, a trade very, very alluring, obviously bringing in an all-star like, Freddie Peralto also very, very exciting. He is on the final year of a very team-friendly extension, and the debacks are cited as the fourth most likely team to land the ace. So let's take a look here at Freddie Peralta's stats from 2025, because, again, he was one of the best in the league. He had a 2.70 ERA in 176 and two-thirds innings pitched.
Starting point is 00:23:35 He had a 3.64 FIP. He had a 10.4 strikeout to walk ratio. A 10.4 strikeout to walk ratio. Like that's crazy. And not only that, but his career stats are around there. Right? His career strikeout to, like he is a strikeout pitcher, something the Diamondbacks have never really had.
Starting point is 00:23:55 He held opponents to a batting average of 193, and he was worth a 5.5 B-war. In the short term, a Freddie Peralta deal is very, very tempting, very sexy. If the Diamondbacks are, in fact, in a win now mode as we've wondered if they are in 2026 and they want to upgrade their rotation Peralta is is it he is a very attractive target he is one of the only pictures that you could potentially acquire that has truly elite stuff and a cheap salary he is currently only owed
Starting point is 00:24:30 eight million dollars in 2026 and that is a big part of what makes this not only alluring for the diamondbacks to get in on but also it's going to take a lot for the brewers to give us up an Ace All-Star who has just one year left on their contract, but that one year is a mere $8 million salary. You're not even going to be able to go out and find a replacement for less than double that. And the brewers know that for sure. So it was going to take, it is going to take a haul to get him in return. In fact, the Bleacher Report article has the trade package for Freddie Peralta being outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt, shortstop case in Cunningham, and right-handed pitcher Daniel Egan.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Wow. Really just going for all of my guys. I mean, that shot to the jugular. I mean, I hate that. Kaysen Cunningham is a guy that I've said could very well be moved. I feel like he is very major league ready. He has great stuff. And again, he's a shortstop.
Starting point is 00:25:27 So I just don't see with him and the other infielders the Diamondbacks have kind of ahead of him. I don't see where he factors in to getting playing time. And I think that, again, he is in the Router's top 100. as far as players or prospects in major league baseball, not just in the Diamondback system,
Starting point is 00:25:46 but a top 100 prospect in baseball. Ryan Walshmidt is also on the Rooters list at number 74. Meanwhile, Daniel Egan is listed as the Diamondbacks number 13 overall prospect over at MLB Pipeline.com. Long term, risky, horrible, terrible. You're giving up this much of your future for a guy that is a one-year rental, essentially. and not only are you giving it up for a guy that's a one-year rental,
Starting point is 00:26:12 but you're already giving it up for a guy that's already signed a very team-friendly contract extension. I doubt Freddie Peralta, when he's a free agent after this season, is going to be seeking anything other than the biggest contract that he could potentially get. And he's going to be one of the best pitchers on the free agent market in the 2026 off season, and he will get a long-term deal worth a truck full of money, I'm sure. obviously he needs to still have a good season in 2026. That's another reason why I think Freddie Peralta himself probably wouldn't want to move to a team like Arizona. The Brewers had far more success last year.
Starting point is 00:26:49 They're set up for better success in 2026. It gives them an opportunity to shine and get that long-term deal. Meanwhile, the brewers, they have interest there in moving him obviously due to the fact that they probably won't be able to resign them in a similar way that the Diamondbacks couldn't resign if they traded for him. And again, to walk away with an all-stop. star ace like that, just walking at the end of the season and not getting anything formed is feels a little bit like, you know, a letdown overall. Peralta was incredible in 2025.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Like I said, he's got swing and miss stuff. He's got a fastball, a changeup slider. He can generate whiffs. He can limit hard contact. He's been durable. He's logged 30 plus starts and over 165 innings over the past three seasons. And his strikeout rate, as I said, there is elite. Not just in 2025, but his career numbers are.
Starting point is 00:27:37 are elite. And again, the value of that contract is tremendous. Team option for 2026 for $8 million. You're getting ace level performance and you're getting it for what you could probably, I mean, calculate as being close to nothing. I know it's still $8 million. It's a lot of money to me and Damon more than we'll ever see in either of our lifetimes combined. Even if you can't factor in gambling losses there as well. Someone clip this for when I when I go huge. You better share some of that milk money with me. But adding Peralta obviously completely changes the dynamic of the Diamondbacks. One thing I don't like in all of these articles I've read is how many people are referencing that Corbyn Burns will not pitch in 2026.
Starting point is 00:28:24 I don't really know where that information came from, nor do I know if that's accurate. I do know that Corbin Burns is going to be the type of guy that is going to be ahead of schedule. I don't care what you say. Burns is a dog. He's already sick of not pitching. I mean, I think on our final media availability, he was already talking about how much they're going to have to hold him back. That's one of the biggest problems with having Tommy John surgery, having this brace procedure, is that when you go to have Tommy John surgery, you come back, there's a point far too early where you start feeling good again and you want to throw and you want to start advancing your progression. You want to start getting
Starting point is 00:29:00 into your throwing program. And that's where they hold you back because no matter how good you feel, there's just too big of a risk of re-injuring yourself damaging the work that they did and causing you to have another Tommy John surgery. So Corbyn Burns himself said that holding himself back is going to be the hardest problem. But if you're still talking about Burns coming back by the All-Star Break, which I feel like the Diamondbacks and other folks were, and that, I mean, maybe that's it because they said that Corbin-Burton is going to be lost for most of the 20-26 season.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And that is the case. Like if you are talking about him coming back after the All-Star break, that is well after the true 50% point of the year. But I will say that a little reunion here between two of the best pitchers the Milwaukee Brewers have ever had isn't the worst thing, especially considering how good those guys have been. Freddie Peralta wasn't very good, at least track record-wise, in the playoffs. But he kind of reversed that a little bit this year and was much better.
Starting point is 00:29:58 And just overall, I mean, he is the kind of guy that really would be a game changer for the Diamondbacks. Just not based on them giving up that much, right? They gave up far too much, they would give up far too much, at least in this proposed trade package. And the biggest problem with that is how much of this is their future, right?
Starting point is 00:30:20 We had Ryan Walschman on the show. I'm looking forward to talking to Daniel Egan. I think we're going to have him on next week. There's a little preview for you in regards to that. But both of these guys very much feel like they could impact the Diamondbacks, very soon, right? Ryan Waldschmidt still hasn't started at AAA level yet, but I imagine that's where he will start this year, and then he will have, you know, maybe some time to ramp up and maybe
Starting point is 00:30:45 join this team in 2026. Daniel Egan, another guy that, you know, again, probably a little bit farther off, but a guy that could also very much be a huge part of their future and a guy who, you know, could be one of those, you know, homegrown aces in the staff that the Diamondbacks need to get to, right? Like they, this is a frustrating year because, you know, not only was it injuries to, you know, their frontline guys, but it was also injuries to the guys that would be getting an opportunity had they been healthy when those frontline guys went down, right?
Starting point is 00:31:21 Like Ryan Walston. Meanwhile, Tommy Henry, he's a guy that probably would have been in the starting rotation. He has been DFA to make room on the 40-man roster for those four prospects that they added. And of course, two of those are guys we've been talking about quite a bit in Cole Drake and Mitch Brad. Both of those guys could be solutions potentially for the rotation in 2026. However, it's like all of that just feels like mediocrity. And it's no attack on those young pitchers.
Starting point is 00:31:51 They could come up and be very good at a major league level. I just don't think the expectations are there in regards to that. But when you talk about bringing in a Freddie Peralta, that's a game changer for this team. that completely changes the dynamic of the Diamondbacks and also it allows them that they do successfully bring them on in trade to maneuver financially and still have money to add not only another starter, but a first baseman whom the Diamondbacks have very much been rumored to be in the first baseman market this off season.
Starting point is 00:32:21 So it feels like that is a problem they're actually going to address. I don't think we are going to have to see a platoon of Payman Smith and Tyler Locklear at first base, at least hopefully not. But in order to get there, in order for that to happen, they're going to need to solve their problems with starting pitching in other ways. This is a way to solve that, starting, you know, pitching problem, but is the cost far too great,
Starting point is 00:32:45 is seeing Ryan Walschman, Daniel Egan, go have, you know, go continue to make the Milwaukee Brewers a team that wins their division every year and makes the playoffs every year. Is that going to be something that drives us nuts? The brewers have been very good about trading players big names like Devin Williams and getting back someone in return that becomes a rookie of the year candidate right like the brewers are very good at assessing talent and more importantly they're assessing they're they're good at getting guys that are close to major league ready and bringing
Starting point is 00:33:16 them in and then helping them develop into that next level right and especially with pitching the track record for the brewer's pitching as far as young guys coming up and being studs is impressive it's something that really does show the gap between the diamondbacks and their ability to develop young pitchers versus a team like the Brewers. But this is our chance to kind of steal one of those guys away, at least for one season. So I don't know. I'd love to hear from you guys in the chat.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Make sure you drop a like, but make sure you also drop your comment about whether you would be willing to sacrifice Ryan Waldschmidt, Kaysen Cunningham, and more importantly, Daniel Egan here, all for one year potentially of David Peralta, David Peralta, Freddie Peralta.
Starting point is 00:33:57 We do not want David Peralta back. That was... It's even worse. No, that's, that's absolutely no when it comes to that for sure. But I'll, I mean, that's a crazy package, Derek, for a one-year rental. It is crazy, right? It's insane. I don't know if it would take that much, right? Perhaps it would take a combination of two of those guys, but do you even want to lose two of those guys? Do you even really want to lose like Egan and Cunningham or or Walshmet and Cunningham?
Starting point is 00:34:23 And I swear to God, if we miss our opportunity to have a guy named Walshmit on the team at the same time as a guy named Goldschmidt. As Jason Armstrong would say if he was here, I'm going to get very rioty. I'm once again going to get rioty. I try not to get rioty. I just try to only threaten to be rioty when it's deserved. But again, trading away far too much of the future is something none of our fan base wants to see. And again, it's no guarantee. The Diamondbacks are already just so questionable when it comes to how competitive they're going to be in 2026. Is adding a front line starter like this just for one year really make the difference? could. I mean, again, this is one of the few guys that they could get that is on such a team-friendly
Starting point is 00:35:06 contract that it will still allow you the financial maneuverability to go out there this offseason and add some other names. Perhaps you could even add some of those guys to a longer-term deal that shores up the future of this team as well so that we're not just left with 2026 kind of being an all-in season. And if it's lost, it's lost, 2027, we're in a bad place in 2028, 2029. We're left regretting everything in life as we watch, you know, a young Ryan Walschman go win, potentially of the rookie of the year with the Milwaukee Brewers. Casing Cunningham is like the new Francisco Lindor. He's amazing.
Starting point is 00:35:42 No, he's good. I'm just saying that that would be classic debacks. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Please don't. Let's not. We can't. It's a hell of a package, though.
Starting point is 00:35:50 Like, I would need more control for a guy if that's the package that I'm giving up. 100%. Freddie Peralta, I think, is the caliber of player I'm cool with. But if he had that team-friendly deal for three more years, I'm all in. Like, sure. Oh, 100%. I'd be able to that for three more years.
Starting point is 00:36:03 Yeah, exactly. But that hall for a one-year rental, unacceptable. I also think that the brewers need him enough that it would take a haul like that for them to do it, right? That's the problem is if anybody does trade for Freddie Peralta, most likely the brewers are going to fleece them in the deal. And that's because they really don't need to move him. They don't need to move him at the deadline.
Starting point is 00:36:26 And they could move him at the deadline. They could wait until then. and then like the Diamondbacks did with their players that they moved, assess the season, see how things go, see if they're a winner. If they're a winner and they're winning their division again, then, I mean, it's still just $8 million. Like, you kind of don't mind if you're able to get nothing for him, if the result is that he once again leads you to the playoffs and maybe perhaps beyond in 2026, right? But again, that's still up in the air. I do love the fact that the Diamondbacks are still tied to him, though, and I love the fact that what I heard from Mike Hazen here at the GM meetings in Las Vegas, he's kind of scoffing
Starting point is 00:37:07 at the idea that the Diamondbacks are a poverty franchise that do not have the resources to go out there and get the guys they need. Ken Kendrick's comments were true, but that is based on a lot of factors. It's also based on the fact that I think Mike Hazen is the kind of GM that could convince Ken to go over budget if the opportunity presented. itself for an elite player. So again, if they're able to make a move like this that settles one of their needs and elites gives them some more money to push it in other directions, I think that they could go far over their limited budget that we've discussed so many times
Starting point is 00:37:42 on the show and still make this team very competitive. Let's not forget how good the core was. Let's not forget how a few days ago we were talking about MVP considerations for Raldo Perdomo and Corby and these guys being added to the all-M-L-L-Bel. B team and everything like that. Like the Diamondbacks are not in a bad situation. They just have some drastic, drastic personnel shortcomings right now that they have to fix in order for them to bring that the pitching staff back up to where it should be to complement this offense that the Diamondbacks have put together.
Starting point is 00:38:16 But yeah, that's what we got. Also, the Sons are making an effort to try to fix things by creating a relationship with Terik Scoobal, and we're going to get to that here shortly. Also on the other side of this break, we're going to talk about both the Tampa Bay Rays or the Devil Rays, depending on what your preference is there and the Diamondbacks, both swinging and whiffing on Bobby O'Braeu in the 1997 MLB expansion draft that happened right across the street. We're going to talk about that on throwback Thursday. I won't throwdown Thursday. That's not, I got that one, but we're going to do throwback Thursday on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere?
Starting point is 00:38:52 You're watching the PHA next Diamondback show. Well, Damon and I absolutely are huge fans of pure edibles, and that's because pure edibles can really help us get through some of these hard times. They really can. They have a wide variety of strains and effects for you to choose from, and each of those effects are clearly listed on each tin. They're also a full-fledged candy company that have a wide variety of candies, depending on your preference and your mood, right? You can also go in there to check out gummies. They have hard candies, soft candies, choose. They have their kicks, which are their versions of Starbursts, and so much more.
Starting point is 00:39:26 So check out the full line of candies that Pure Edibles has to offer. They also have collaborated with one of my favorite breweries in the state, Mother Road Brewing Company, to form Noble Road. And they're brand new offering the Tower Station IPA all in one, where it is Hopi Hour All the Tam. If you've ever had Tower Station IPA, it's a delightful beer. It is very heavy in the AVV category. And it also offers crisp citrus and pinyop flavors,
Starting point is 00:39:53 as does this. wonderful new offering, this captures all of that flavor from Arizona's favorite IPA, but with a smooth THC twist and an all-in-one device. So go find yourself some pure edibles products, as well as this new amazing tower station all in one from one of over 130 dispensaries across the state of Arizona. And I love shady rays, mostly because I'm a very forgetful guy. I tend to lose stuff all the time, and it's very frustrating to me. But nothing makes me happier than the fact that if I do do lose or break my shady rays, they have me covered with the best lost and broken replacement plan in all of eyewear. Not to mention, their sunglasses are extremely affordable. They are
Starting point is 00:40:36 the same quality as higher brands, higher priced brands, but still just offer you not only that same quality in a lower price sunglass, but also an amazing warranty. They have crystal clear optics with their polarized lenses and even have those color rush lenses that I've discussed with you guys that make life brighter more colorful and more beautiful. So, of course, Shady Rays has your back long after your purchase, and that is why we've teamed up with them. They bring you an exclusive offer right now. Head on over to ShadyRase.com and use code PHNX for 35% off polarized sunglasses.
Starting point is 00:41:10 Try for yourself the shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people. Well, Damon, just this week was the anniversary of the 1997 MLB expansion draft. It featured the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Airs. on the Diamondbacks, both drafting players from across MLB players that were, much like the Rule 5 draft that went unprotected and, again, making their, flushing out their franchises. We talked about it so briefly, and I just thought it was hilarious because I did bring up that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays took with their sixth pick overall, All-Star Legend Bobby Abrayu. And when you look at this list, there's plenty of good baseball players
Starting point is 00:41:55 on here, I mean, the devil race took Tony Saunders, number one overall, a left-handed pitcher from the Florida Marlins, where the Arizona Diamondbacks took Brian Anderson, a left-handed pitcher from the Cleveland Indians at the time, aka the Guardians. But then, of course, you know, they went back and forth here. Quentin McCracken was drafted to the raise. Diamondbacks took Gabe Alvarez,
Starting point is 00:42:17 and then that's really where it was egregious, right? They took Gabe Alvarez, third baseman from the San Diego Padres, over Bobby Abraeu from the Houston Astros. And you might remember Bobby Abraeu simply because he had himself a stellar career, two-time All-Star, Gold Glove winner, Silver Slug Award winner, basically iconic Philadelphia Philly. And the reason why that is is because just hours after acquiring Bobby Abraeu from the Houston Astros in the 1997 expansion draft, Tampa Bay traded him to,
Starting point is 00:42:54 the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop, Kevin Stocker. Yeah, you know that household name Kevin Stocker, a trade regarded among the worst in MLB history, and that is a scathing comment from Wikipedia itself. So yes, I said that the Diamondbacks whipped on Bobby Abrae, but to be completely transparent, so did the Tampa Bay Devil Reyes. So that's just crazy that Brayu escaped out of that draft, and Phillies somehow ended up with him. Like what a wild series of events that brought Bobby Abraeu to the Phillies. Meanwhile, some other history that was made this week in the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise. On November 16th, 1999, won Randy Johnson, led the major leagues in strikeouts,
Starting point is 00:43:42 innings pitched in complete games, and became the Arizona Diamondbacks first major individual trophy holder by winning his second Sy Young, and that was the first time a Syung Award was brought to the Arizona Diamondbacks. On November 14, 2007, Bob Melvin was named BVWA National League Manager of the Year and also won Manager of the Year from the Sporting News and the Negro League's Baseball Museum.
Starting point is 00:44:12 So again, Bob Melvin was kind of iconic around that period of time for the Diamondbacks, especially when they were rebuilding from it, kind of being a terrible team during those mid-2000 years. On November 16th, 2009, the official ground-breaking ceremony for a spring training facility took place. It would later become our second home Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on June 4, 2010, the following year. So this is the week that Salt River Fields a Talking Stick was born. on November 16th, 2011, another manager of the year award.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Kurt Gibson was named the BBWA NL manager of the year receiving the sporting news and Negro League's baseball museum manager of the year, and he joined Bob Melvin as the only D-BACs managers to win those honors. Paul Goldschmidt in 2013, he finished, remember this, he finished second in National League most valuable player voting to won Andrew McCutcheon, announced by the Baseball Raiders Association of America. This was on November 14th, 2013. This was one of the most controversial decisions
Starting point is 00:45:25 I've ever seen fans in the Valley react to, Damon. This was, we talked about rioty moments. This was a very rioty moment amongst the Diamondbacks fan base. I believe Paul Goldschmidt just finished almost better in every imaginable way than Andrew McCutche. Not to say that McCutcheon wasn't deserving of it himself, but it was the true moment that it felt like no matter how good a player was here in Arizona,
Starting point is 00:45:54 unless they were Randy Johnson, they were not going to get the recognition that they truly deserved. Yes, and that was proven. It felt like a couple years later when the Diamondbacks made the playoffs and the Marlins did not, and John Carlos Stanton was given the MVP award because we were told in the McCutcheon MVP year that it was because the pirates made the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:46:13 And so when Goldschmidt brought the D-backs, you know, almost single-handedly to the playoffs in, what was that? That didn't matter. 2017. Yeah, it was, it didn't matter anymore. So I think the inconsistency is what bothered Diamondbacks fans because there's almost no way around it. Paul Goldschmidt should have had one MVP of those two MVP's.
Starting point is 00:46:32 100%. 100%. It was crazy that he did. I think he got third, by the way, in the John Carlo Stanton year. Oh, God. I think Votto might have finished ahead of him or some Coggs probably remembers. Correct me on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:42 I'm sure he does. Speaking of Coggs, I asked Coggs what he was doing tomorrow so that I could formally invite him onto this show. So if Coggs is here and wants to accept my co-host invite that I threw out there yesterday, Coggs, find this office. I'm not telling me where I'm not giving you this address. Wow. You can figure out how to get here tomorrow. I mean, Coggs, you're downtown already. I mean, I think you got to start, you got to get out of your dorm right now and start just walking around downtown until you find clues.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Yeah. Like, because we are here. We are downtown. You just don't know exactly where. Right. Which floor, what section we're on, where we're at. I have described the businesses that are around this building quite a bit. In fact, if you find the Cuban coffee place, you're already so close. Yeah, that's it. That's warm. That's your starting off. That's warm for sure. I mean, listen, you could also just kind of camp right outside where our parking garage is potentially to prove it, see somebody driving out. Like there's a lot. You got a lot of options here. I mean, I think you'll figure it. out. And your uniform is definitely one of the ones that was unveiled on November 17, 2023. You got to figure out which one of the new four uniforms were unveiled. But again, on November 17th is the anniversary of the Diamondback switching over to what I believe to be potentially one of the best color combinations in all of baseball. I still think that the early years of the Diamondbacks jerseys, as Damon and I proved when we rank the jerseys, there's still the goats, right?
Starting point is 00:48:11 But really, when it comes to the four new uniform designs that were unveiled for the 2024 season, it featured the Sedona Red, the teal as primary colors, the return of the off-white color scheme for the home uniform, the original D came back, Big D came back. We got Big D back in our life, that's amazing. And the Diamondback's word mark on those red jerseys. So it's the uniforms reimagined, and I think that they needed it. The Diamondbacks plain Sedona Red stuff was so boring. for so long and then they ventured into the weird, you know, the gradient years that was like
Starting point is 00:48:45 such a, such a, you know, change of what they were doing, you know, it was so boring and then they did something so radical. Meanwhile, I think this design is still one of their best in team history. And I'm proud. I'm proud when I see the Diamondbacks wear these jerseys and the color combinations. And of course, that led to this beautiful color combination that I'm wearing right now coming back as well. So they really hit it out of the park, pun intended, with their uniforms as of late. And I hope that that tradition continues. So I still want to throw it out there. They have a bunch of Nike shirts in their team shop that have this really cool Arizona wordmark on it.
Starting point is 00:49:23 That doesn't appear anywhere else aside from these shirts. Maybe they should look to adding those on a jersey? Just saying the way a jersey could look really cool. We're going to, of course, talk a little bit more here about trade rumors and such. but first I did want to remind you about the Territorial Cup party going down in a few weeks. Courtesy of our friends and Captain Morgan, you can join our PHNX Sun Devils crew and maybe the PHNX Arizona UA crew. Like, why are we leaving you guys out? We all need to be down there in Tempe for a live post game show at Loco Patron on Mill Avenue.
Starting point is 00:49:58 I will be out there most likely. I will not be recording shows, nor will I be sober most likely. I'm going to be having a great time. Or if the Sun Devils lose and Damon's happy, I'm going to be having a terrible time and I'm going to be really drunk. But following this year's Territorial Cup on November 28th, Totry, Eric, and Shane will be hosting a live postgame show
Starting point is 00:50:18 following the game out there at Loco Patron. Come join them approximately 30 minutes following the final whistle for this special opportunity to witness your favorite Sun Devils show in person and hang out. Have a good time. We're going to be having a great time out there. We would love to see you guys join us for that. And hopefully I will make it out there.
Starting point is 00:50:36 I'm kind of too old for the Mill Avenue scene. At least I've been told that by people that were on Mill Avenue. But there's a particular ice stream shop that makes cones out of like churros. And quite frankly, that is enough to get me to drive across the valley to go to the Tempe area. So I'll be out there. But Mark Fein-San released his annual All-Trade Rumor Team article on Tuesday, then and this one of course is a you know this is an annual tradition right mark finds and goes out there and finds the biggest trade rumors on the market for each position and kind
Starting point is 00:51:15 of puts together a team in this case the good news for arizona diamondbacks fans is kattel marty is not on it our long national nightmare is over we can stop talking about could tell Marte trade rumors because he is not on Mark Feincent's all trade rumor team. Also, coincidentally enough, Freddie Peralta, also not on it. I believe Mark Feinson and I are on the same page here where unless the team blows the brewers away with an offer, similar to this one that the Bleacher Report is throwing out there, I don't think they're going to consider trading Freddie Peralta until they've had a chance to see how their season goes and what things look like, right?
Starting point is 00:51:52 So that is definitely something I can understand, and he is not a pitcher that is on this particular team, but there is another pitcher that is on this list, and that's Terrick Scoobel. And you know how I feel about Terrick Scoobel. Now, if you're talking about giving up the trade package that we just discussed for Freddie Peralta, I'm hesitant. If you're talking about giving it up for Terrick Scoobel, I will give you this dog and this snake to throw in to make the deal even more appealing to you, because Terik Scoobal is a elite pitcher that I feel like the Diamondbacks should throw all of the money at in the world and should bring them here. And we're going to talk about that on a future episode, even though it's a pipe dream, right?
Starting point is 00:52:34 But meanwhile, who is on this list? Catcher Sean Murphy appears to be on this list, as well as Yandy Diaz over at first base, Brendan Donovan at second, CJ Abrams at shortstop, Nolan Aeronato at third base, outfielders, Jaron, Stephen Kwan, and Nick Castiano's at DH from the Red Sox. it's Masataka Yoshida and then starting pitchers Joe Ryan and Terrick Scouble relievers Victor Vodnick. That comprises the all trade rumor team. Now of those guys, obviously the Diamondbacks very much need some help out there in the outfield and the idea of adding Stephen Kwan specifically to this Diamondbacks outfield is amazing. But again, that might be a cost too high and it might not be
Starting point is 00:53:18 need that they need to address that much when they have so many other pending needs. And those pending needs are pitching help. So Stephen Kwan, yes, I'm interested. I'm all in on. I'm also interested on any of these pitching options, whether it's Vodnik, Joe Ryan from Minnesota Twins, or Terrick Scoobel. But most importantly, give us Terrick Scoobal. All right? What are any of you doing to bring Terrick Scubal to the Valley? I already know what the town of Kingman is doing. They have literally a sabbatical anytime he pitches, right? That just shows the reverence that the entire state of Arizona needs to have to Terek Scoobal anytime he pitches. But more importantly, the Phoenix Sons are trying. The Phoenix Sons are out here. Devin Booker is out here trying, and that's the
Starting point is 00:54:07 most important part overall. Here we got this, this going on. We got Devin Booker hand delivering a pair of his new, are we calling them book twos, or are we calling them chapter twos? What are we doing here? I think they're book twos. They're book twos, right? Why do we have chapter on it?
Starting point is 00:54:26 Like chapter would have been book chapter two, book chapter one. Anyway, gets them a two brand new pair of book twos out there on the court. Is Tariq's Kuhl wearing panda dunks? He is. I believe so.
Starting point is 00:54:41 What? I mean, and this is taking place where in Portland, right? Portland Trailblazers game, I believe. That looks like the Reds Garden. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:50 But like, is the best pitcher in baseball seriously wearing the most common shoes on planet Earth? Yeah. Or are those like a special... No, those have to be. They look shinier than pandas, don't they? A little bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:04 They look like they have a sheen to them. Yeah. Yeah. And Coggs is right. Let a white boy air out his swag demon. Okay. I get it. Let a white boy air it out.
Starting point is 00:55:12 Tarik Scoobles looking pretty damn Arizona in that video. I'm just saying. I like he looks like what I wear when I walk out of the house every single day like that's an Arizona ass fit well it is it is it definitely is like look at this I'll play it again this is an Arizona ass fit look at that joggers lightweight jackets lightweight jacky bomber jacket uh hat perfect for golfing perfect brim hat perfect brim hat for golfing uh and he looks smooth yeah it looks smooth I can't wait for this man to be an Arizona diamond back and I I appreciate the Phoenix Suns for having the vision right. We said the Phoenix Sons were going to be one of the worst teams in the NBA this year.
Starting point is 00:55:50 And not only are they holding it down for themselves, but look at them out here recruiting on behalf of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phoenix Sons are trying to single-handedly fix Arizona sports, and I applaud them for it. Give him all the money and give Devin Booker more money just because. Oh, I love those sons right now. Those boys are doing it all. I think Ott is the mastermind behind this, right? Jordan Ott was like, we need to fix the Diamondbacks too. We're already fixing the Sun's.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Let's book here, go, go. No, no, no, no. Hey, no, book's going to deliver them to them. You know they had some guy from the coaching staff or something that was going to go. No, no, no, no, no, no. Devin's going to hand deliver them to Terrick Scoobal. We're bringing this man back to the valley. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:36 That's what we're doing. It's like if there was ever to be like a free agent meeting, you know how sometimes they just like pick the most random people to be involved. Right. I need Devin Booker sitting next to Mike Hayes and Tori Lavolo and like Geraldo Perdomo in a room. And it's those, that's the four person head trust of the Diamondbacks. Books like me Perdomo and Corbyn are going to take one of my lowriders to go pick Terrick Scoobl up at the airport. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:00 We're going to personally escort him to the meeting. We're going to stop by a Bertos and get him a Carnie Asada burrito or an Arizona burrito on the way there. and I just bring them back. Bring them back old times. Bring them back in good time. Hey, remember this state? We're all going to take a road trip to Vegas and go through Kingman and those people are going to lodge you as a God.
Starting point is 00:57:22 They're going to hoist you up on their shoulders and parade you around. The King of Kingman. Yeah, the King of Kingman. I mean, that's it. What can we have? Do you want to rename the town of Kingman, Scouble, Arizona? Literally, let's do it. Well, I'm a mayor.
Starting point is 00:57:38 I can make that happen. Yeah, you have that kind of authority. kind of pool around here. Well, we appreciate you guys joining us. Coggs, make sure you figure out where this building is. And if he does, Cogs will be joining me. Get searching. Get searching.
