Well, that's it.
It's actually over.
The end of the Diamondbacks playoff hopes and pretty much the 2025 season.
We're going to have a lot of thoughts on it in 30 seconds.
Welcome in to a very, very sad edition of the PHNXDbacks podcast, live from a closet here at PHNXHQ.
And I deserve that.
We deserve that.
I don't deserve to be in Studio K.
I don't deserve.
I definitely don't deserve to be in Studio A.
But welcome in to you all.
Thank you guys for being here.
Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 in Game Time.

This is the end, folks.
the end of the Arizona Diamondbacks,
2025 season, the end of their postseason hopes.
And there was no way I was going to do it alone.
First, I got my guy, Ayrton, aka Freckled Mamba,
on the ones and twos today, if you want to call it that.
I don't even know if these are ones and twos.
Might be a calculator he's working on back there.
But I couldn't just do it alone.
So we called in some reinforcements,
and we got our guy, Dalton Feely,
from John Boy Media joining us.
Dalton.
Oh, Dalton.
Don't get up, Dalton.
Don't get up. That's a very fitting position to be in considering what happened tonight to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Good to have you here, buddy, but I wish it was under better circumstances. I wish we weren't talking about the debacks being eliminated from playoff contention.
Hello, everybody. The Diamondbacks knocked out. This is how I feel. This is how I'm going to talk the entire time. No, hi, Derek. Hi, hi, everybody. I wish it was under better circumstances, but the season is officially over.
there's a lot to be talked about.
There is. And I think that there is plenty of time this off season to agonize over a lot of things.
And it's going to be interesting to see if any changes are made in any way.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Zach Gallen.
This was an unfortunate end to his tenure with the Diamondbacks, considering it ended out more with a fizzle than a bang.
And unfortunately, Gowan was not his best today than the Diamondbacks needed him to be.
They lose this game to the Padres by a score of seven to four.
Their record is 80 and 80, but who cares?
And of course, the big story in this one is that the Diamondbacks, along with the Reds win today, have now been eliminated from the playoffs.
They will not make the playoffs, but Dalton, did they even really deserve to?
So at the deadline, they sell.
And that was essentially the first white flag of the ears of Diamondbacks saying, hey, we're probably not going to make the playoffs.
I mean, basically it was the end when they went 9 and 16 in July, excuse me, a very rough month.
That was basically it.
In an NL that was actually really competitive until the end of the year, the dimebacks bounce back,
have a pretty decent August and September.
They're one of the best teams since mid-August until the end of the year, basically.
And obviously, the last three games have not gone their way, which knocked them out from being,
hey, one game back to, all right, you're bounced.
See you.
We'll see you at 26.
2026.
Have a great time.
So they didn't deserve to be there after selling at the deadline.
You know, the lineup wasn't the same.
They didn't have that same impact or punch.
The bullpen obviously was beat up for the entire year.
The only bright side, I guess, from the deadline to now is that the starting
pitching did bounce back a little bit.
Like we saw second half gallon was actually pretty darn good up until this start,
sadly.
Ryan Nelson's still a dog.
Erod had a pretty decent second half.
there was some flashes there.
So there were some positives, but yeah, like you said,
I don't know how far this team would have gone, but, you know, all you have to do is
get in the dance, right?
If you're there, you could just dance the night away.
We saw that in 2023.
That's right.
Thinks they won't be there again.
But, yeah, 80 and 80 mid.
And that's what it's been for 2025.
Well, and the 2023 postseason run, like you said, it could happen again.
It could happen to any team.
But I feel like that has really skewed.
our view on this. And I think that, to be honest, that 2023 team had quite a few things that were
better for them than what they have this year. Right. And so especially when it comes to their
bullpen and, you know, I mean, honestly, there was just something special it felt like about
that team. They also, though, kind of like didn't win their way in. And that's kind of been the
story the last three post seasons is, or at least the end of the regular season,
the Diamondbacks is that they had a chance to control their destiny.
I know Jake hates that phrase, but he uses it 500 times in an episode.
But they had a chance, you know, in 2023, and they were unable to do so.
They did get in due to help.
And last year, they had a chance to win and get in, and they didn't.
And they needed help to get in, and they didn't get that help.
And they didn't get in even with 89 wins.
And now this year, the only reason why they were even in this position to begin with
is because the Mets were miserable.
and they gave both the Reds and the Diamondbacks a chance,
and the Giants and even the Marlins,
a chance to kind of get back into this race somehow,
simply based on how terrible they are.
If this was the American League,
none of these teams would be close,
and the wildcard race would have been decided a long time ago
because we wouldn't have had this.
What sucks is the way that this last week has gone.
I think that getting beat by the Dodgers there in extra innings,
followed by getting absolutely wrecked by the Dodgers
in what was the most, the most.
most questionable move possibly of the season to go to a bullpen game against the Dodgers
instead of going to Zach Gallen that was planned. And then Zach Gallen comes out today and is not
his best. And none of this has worked out for them, which feels more in line with how the rest of
this season has gone. I also say this because these are the teams that the Diamondbacks most likely
were going to face off against in the postseason. So realistically, you saw how outclassed the
diamondbacks were in that entire three-game series by the Diamondbacks or by the Dodgers
starting pitchers. And then today it was another case of the Padres offense just being entirely
too much for Zach Gallen and, you know, even the bullpen, to be fair. Yeah, 100%. And I think the most
annoying part of the last couple of games, like you mentioned these are NLS opponents. Like we see
these teams quite often with the Dodgers and the Padres. These two teams specifically have been the
class of the NL West over the last couple of years.
And it would have been a really impressive feat for the Arizona Dimex to play the last two
series, win them, if not sweep both and miraculously get into the playoffs, right?
And then you're riding the highest of highs going into the playoffs and maybe that magic sparks
again.
You win that game on Tuesday, the opener of the series versus the Dodgers.
And you're now back up three above 500.
And you're like, oh, wow, we're here.
Like, there's a shot.
and that Wednesday game, Derek,
that was the most deflated
I felt in a while because, like I said,
the second half hadn't been bad for the dimebacks,
even after selling at the deadline.
Like, this could have gotten away from the dimebacks
way earlier than it did.
So I do commend them for making us,
you know, giving us contending baseball
towards the last series,
until the last series of the season.
So shout out there, but my golly, Derek.
You know, I'm happy for that.
Yeah.
As somebody that hosts a show about the Diamondbacks,
I'm glad that this team stayed relevant.
But again, that relevance was only generated by the Mets being bad and letting these teams back in it.
I don't mean to harp on that, but again, it's kind of part of this whole scenario.
We feel like the Diamondbacks really battled back and won like 20 games in a row when in reality,
here they sit at 80 and 80 and even at 80 and 80 they were close to or at 80 and 79,
they were close to being in the wildcard race.
And it looks like the Mets might fumble the bag in somewhere.
way and let the Reds or maybe the Marlins even sneak in and snug follow us. No, I think they're done
too, but again, they needed the Reds to not win and the Reds did win. And unfortunately, the Brewers
who had nothing to play for at this point did not show up against the Reds. That's been also the case
for the Diamondbacks. It feels like we needed the Cubs to just win a couple of games more than they
did and they didn't against both the Reds and the Mets. And just things didn't go their way
towards the end of the season. But the big question here, and I guess the debate that is ongoing in this podcast,
in the chat specifically, is about Tori Lavello and his management of this team, right? There are a lot of
questionable decisions as there are with, I think, every manager in baseball. And I think every fan base in
baseball wants their manager fired what feels like for the most part, at least 50% of the fan base.
But how much of this season do you put on Tori's decision making and some of the
of the things that led this team astray.
And I mean, honestly, how much do you credit Tori for what he was able to do with this,
you know, island of misfit toys down the stretch, at least in the bullpen and even in their
starting rotation?
So first off, I do want to say, I think I do lean towards the side of the fan base, if you
will, that I'm not a Tory hater, if you will.
Like, I don't blame Tori.
I don't think I give them too much hate.
But I will say I will criticize moves if I think they're just blatantly bad.
that. Like I'm not going to, I'm not going to blindly defend toward because I like Toy.
I'm not going to give him hate because I blindly hate toy, right? I will say this past week has
been very questionable with some of the decision makings. And I think the biggest one to me,
in my personal opinion, that we haven't even talked about today yet was bunting Perdomo in the
10th inning. Obviously, hindsight, obviously, Derek, hindsight is 20-20. But for all the
the prodomo has been the most clutch hitter on the dime back team this season. And he is someone who's
not going to strike out.
So, like, he's, and I believe he's got, like, top three in quality at bats this season
across major leagues, meaning he's going to put up a fight and he, at the worst, he's going
to move the runner over.
So I just felt, you know, taking the stick out of Prado's hands on Wednesday was a domino
effect for why they lost.
Again, hindsight 2020.
But that's going back to the encompassing question about Toro Lavello.
I will be shocked.
I'll be shocked if he is fired.
this soft season. I think he's going to be back in managing the team. Reminder that he had his extension.
It goes through 2026. So I don't want to say 2026 becomes a make or break for him,
but I think they're going to let him coach out this contract and be like, hey, now it's going to be
interesting, right? This next year is very interesting. You have Corbyn Burns, Justin Martinez,
and AJ Puck, three of your best arms, whether to be in the rotation and bullpen coming back from
Tommy John, some soon rather than later. But that said, Derek, I don't blame
for a majority of the year.
I'm impressed with keeping the locker room here,
having them fight through August and September.
We just got to have better starts.
I think this, and my last thing is, I guess,
2024, they started the year so bad,
and then they fought back,
and they won 89 games, missed the playoffs, right?
This year, I felt like there was more injury,
bad luck induced with all the players at Tommy John.
Marte was out, Marino was out, even Carol got hurt.
So I don't blame Tori there,
but just two years where they should have probably made the playoffs,
based on this roster and they haven't.
So there's obviously going to be question marks there.
Well, I'll tell you this much.
A, Killer X, he's gone.
Ban him from the chat.
I've tried to warn him.
And I was fine with his attacking of Tor.
You're not going to attack me and call me a 7-Eleven slurpee.
No free ads on this show, Killer X.
He's gone out of the chat.
I love you.
I'll miss you.
I'll see you next time, Killer X.
And that's only because I'm angry and I'm not in the mood.
And you should have known that.
You should have known that, Killer X.
on you, not on, no, that's on you. That's on you, that's on you, not on me. You don't go
coming here on a night where the Diamondbacks are eliminated and tell me I look like a
7-11 slurpee. No free ads? You know what's free ad Friday? Max is going to be furious with me,
and I don't care if he is. I don't care if you are either. Anyway, anyway,
you didn't give a warning. I mean, this is. No, I don't give warnings. I'm not an umpire
here, Dalton. I am, I am a madman who's incensed. Do you know what's going on in the two
studios outside. It is literally the meme I tweeted out from the account. There is a mercury
show going on and a goddamn ASU show going on and they're all thrilled because they all won. And
we're in here talking about the Diamondbacks losing and firing the manager. And for the record,
I do think that if Tori Lovolo was fired, it would be with merit. And again, I think that
that's also fine. But also, I don't think that that's going to happen. I think that since he does
have one year left on his contract, they'll let it play out. And to be fair, I think that
think that if Tori wants to stay manager of this team beyond next year, it would have to be an
incredible year. And it's going to be a very tough uphill battle considering what they're
already facing. So perhaps the Diamondbacks just decide to make a move now instead of letting
that all play out. But overall, I don't put all of this on Tori. I just do think that the pile of
managerial decisions that ended up losing leading the losses is significant. And I think that
in order for this team to be in a position,
like where they once again are just falling a few games short of making the postseason,
now you have to go back and dissect all of those losses and see how that adds up
and see, you know, obviously with the amount of blown leads that this team has had this year
and just blown circumstances where they just failed to capitalize on close games
and make the right moves.
Far too many questionable calls throughout the year.
So I don't know.
I mean, I'm conflicted because as you,
you know me and damon go over to to troy's house on sunday and have dinner every sunday it's a
lovely italian dinner as many of accused me of doing so uh since that's the case then um you know
again i uh i i'm conflicted but i do i do think that that this team at times feels like it needs
something and i think back to how much this these players credited uh mike hazen coming into the
clubhouse and talking to them i know that tori lovelo is one of those you know it's it's the manager
They hear from him every single day.
So it's different to hear, you know, the general managers, the front offices voice come into your clubhouse and express some acknowledgement of the situation and take some accountability for where the team is at and putting them in the spot.
But like it kind of was weird to me how well this team responded to Mike Hazen coming in and how much they credited that even, you know, in the final week of the season as part of the reason why they got here and not more players crediting Tori Lavello for.
his management or him inspiring them or saying something that got them fired up.
Like that's not something I actually heard from players, you know, at all, to be honest.
And that's something that might be an indication that maybe they didn't feel that, right?
So I don't know.
But this is this is not the ending any of us wanted.
However, at least like you said earlier, they gave us this fun ride to get to this point
and to make us believe only to break our hearts late,
as they have in many games all season long.
Yeah, I mean, it just stinks, right?
Like, this has been the second straight year where we've made it this far.
Brightside, Derek, at least there's not a double header going on on a Monday that we have to rely on.
Shut up.
No, I don't want to hear that.
It's too soon.
Hey, hey, yeah, yeah.
I could have been more, I could have been meaner.
I could have said you looked like Squidward because you talked about that meme about them playing outside,
and use a SpongeBob meme because you got that T-Long.
I'm just saying, Derek, don't make me good.
Oh, God.
Well, guys, offensively tonight couldn't get much going.
You said a very funny thing to me there for a while before the show,
and that is that their most productive inning was one that featured no hits.
And honestly, had Jorge Barrosa not, he just stopped swinging at pitches,
he would have walked and gotten an extra run in.
And who knows how far that conga line could have gone against Mason Miller,
especially giving Geraldo Perdomo a chance to get a net.
bat there with the bases loaded being down only by one run just a lot of mistakes made in this
game oddly enough jake mccarthy hit his fourth run of the season uh home run of the season it was
a monster shot 423 feet to right field uh could tell martay got him going with a solo home run of his
own in the first season or in the first inning but man just overall it was it was depressing to see
Zach go out there and struggle the way he did, especially after he kind of cruised through those
first three innings with only allowing two hits. I thought it was going to be a night where
Gallin went out there and shoved against a huge opponent, as he has done throughout this season.
And instead, he comes up short here and really just fizzled out in his final outing.
And I mean, I'm going to talk about this more on the other side of this break, Dalton, but
Zach Gallin's tenure where the Diamondbacks might be over. And this is an unfortunate
an ending to his time with this team. Also, I personally, for many reasons, hate the fact that they
did rob us of Zach Gallen having this game at home. Not only did I not think that the bullpen game
made much sense, considering that you could deal with that on Sunday, depending on where you're at by that
point. So that still doesn't make much sense. I do understand Zach was sick over his last few starts,
and they wanted to give him the extra day of rest. But, man, I just think that robbing this Diamondbacks fan base
of acknowledging Gallen in his last home game is a crime of missed opportunity,
considering what he's given this team, what he's meant to this franchise and his time here.
Maybe he didn't want the pomp in circumstance.
Maybe he didn't want all of that attention, but it just still feels like it's sad that we didn't get that.
Or at least in his last home start, they didn't acknowledge that and let us have that at that point.
I will say it's expected for him to be his last start.
It's not technically official because you never know what the qualifying offer
and a long-term deal.
So I'm not going to rule that out.
Obviously, it's expected.
But you mentioned, I think the one thing is that him being sick over the last couple of weeks
is probably the main contributor to why he got pushed back.
Yeah.
And I do agree, though.
It does think that he couldn't make his last start in Chase Field.
that have been nice to get some acknowledgement.
One of the best pitchers in franchise history,
one of the longest tenured pitchers in franchise history.
So if this was it for the milkman,
I tip my cap to you, sir.
I know this year and even spark parts of 2024 wasn't the milkman,
the Zach Gallen that we were used to.
But in 22 and 23, he was one of the biggest reasons
why the dimebacks made their run in 23.
And he was a top five,
Siam guy in 22 and 23.
So Zach Allen, a guy who's recorded
a thousand strikeouts over 60 wins with the team, 176 starts.
I commend you if this was it, and it didn't go out great.
But all of Arizona and all of the Diamondbacks fan base appreciates what you've done for the team.
Well, Dalton, we appreciate you and what you've done for our team and what us for us here at PHNX Diamondbacks.
We appreciate you joining us.
We will have you on still during the postseason.
I'm not letting you go away.
And then we'll also do some offseason stuff as well.
but thank you so much for your time.
Appreciate you.
Am I a robot right now?
Did I turn into a robot there for a while?
Is my internet connection that bad?
For me, you're great.
Okay, good.
All right, well, mine's bad, but all right, well, we appreciate you, Dalton.
We'll see you later, bud.
Hey, as Semi-Sonic once said, it's closing in time.
Much love, everybody.
I'll see you guys soon.
Too soon.
Too soon, Dalton.
Well, we're going to take a quick break.
on the other side of this break, we're going to, I don't know, I'm going to just be sad.
I guess we're going to talk more about this game.
I don't want to.

Why are you blaming me like it's my fault?
I have to do a show about it.
I'm not listening to drinking and having a good time over here.
And Shane's smiling.
What are you got to do?
It's an unsponsored beverage.
Look at what elimination.
That's good.
All right.
I mean, that's tough.
All right.
Well, if there's anything I've got to go back.
Jane, I'm having a miserable time, Jane.
I'm having a miserable time.
They're all drinking.
It's a great time over here.
Great vibes.
I'm tripping on stuff.
I hate it so much.
I hate it, and I got to go back in here and talk about this show.
Get me off this.
Get me off.
Get me out of here.
All right.
I felt like that was, I feel better now.
I feel better.
Anyway, I'm jealous of the fun they're having.
I remember when we did that in 2023.
Anyway, yeah, Dalton, I did.
I did leave.
You left, and I just, I was so lonely without Dalton here that I lost it.
But we're going to talk about Zach Gowlin.
I did want to talk about the roster moves.
before the game, because I kind of had a feeling this was going to happen when we didn't get a chance
to talk to Neville Khrsmat after yesterday's game. But before the game, the Diamondbacks were
called Bryce Jarvis from AAA Reno, and they designated Neville Khrismat for assignment.
And I just want to say how much I think this sucks. I know he did not have an outing in his final
game or good outing in his final game. I know that he has kind of been a journeyman that helped the
Diamondbacks patch a hole essentially in their tire to get them from where they were at to the
end of the season. But I personally think that he was incredible for this team. And I think
designating him for assignment here at the end of the year like this is a pretty miserable move.
I mean, I know that they kind of needed to call up all the arms that they could. I know that
they needed to do what they could to try to, you know, bolster this bullpen and basically make
themselves as good as they possibly could here for this final series against.
the Padres. I get that. They also recalled Andrew Hoffman from AAA Reno and sent Austin Pope,
who just made his major league debut down to the Arizona Complex League debacks team. But Chrismat,
again, I just think was outstanding for this team. He gave them so much. And the only reason,
quite frankly, that they were here at the end of the season is because of Neville Chrismont.
It's because of the contributions of a lot of guys. A lot of guys stepped up. And I know throughout
the season, the Diamondbacks had no problem making those moves, making those moves,
making those cuts, designating guys for assignment when they felt like they had improved in some
way. And that included position players with the addition of James McCann and other guys like
that. Ildemar Vargas was a guy that, quite frankly, was in a battle with Garrett Hampson at the
beginning of this year for a position and lost that battle. And now here he was at the end of the
year in today's game going two for three for this team. And quite frankly, being very valuable
over at first base and anywhere in the infield that Tori Lavello asked him to play.
He had an RBI today and a walk.
That was part of that inning with no hits that caused the Diamondbacks to get back in this game.
Meanwhile, I could tell Marte was one for four with a home run, Corbyn Carroll, O for three, with two walks.
And just overall, this is a lack of effort here or a lack of offensive effort, I could say.
But we do have a king snake, and our king snake for today is Raldo Pardom.
He was two for four with two doubles.
And I think it's pretty fitting that Domo here at the end of the season is our King Snake.
He is our King Snake for this game.
He is our King Snake for this season.
He is a King Snake in every conceivable way of this team.
He is the leader of this team.
He ended up being the best position player.
And quite frankly, the only thing left I want to see out of this team is a two RBI home run from Perno
so he can reach that 100 RBI mark and a 20 home run mark.
That's what I want to say.
I want to see that.
I hope to see that.
And that's all we can all kind of hope to see in these final, you know, two games of the season.
Not much left to watch this team for at this point.
But that is probably something left to watch.
So as Candace says here, a round of applause for Domo's season.
I mean, what more could you say about our captain?
Oh, Captain, my Captain.
Like, not only did he have his best offensive season.
season and quite frankly he was incredible defensively at times even though he had his fair share of mistakes.
But the leadership that he showed that went just beyond supporting his pitcher and supporting his team,
beyond the amazing interviews he gives, it goes to like that situation we could tell Marte,
where he was a vocal leader that stepped up on a basically during Tori's press conference time on an away game
and decided to speak his mind about the entire Marte situation
and have his teammates back.
And that's who Perdomo is.
It's been incredible to watch the maturation of Jerry P.
I have to admit that much like Jesse was saying on the show the other day,
I don't think most of us besides one Damon Dogg saw that Perdomo could be beyond
just a very lovable role player on the team that he could go on to become
an MVP caliber player, and that's what he became over the course of this season.
Quite frankly, the Diamondbacks needed it at times, and I think that that could be why
Prudomo stepped up as big as he did this year, is that he just felt like, especially during
stretches where many of his teammates were in slumps.
Ketel Marte was going through what he had gone through in the numerous instances that he had
gone through things.
It just felt like Domo never quit, never stopped trying to have this team win.
And so it was a great season for Pridomo.
But to Zach Gallen, this was unfortunate.
And to Zach Gallen's tenure here with the Diamondbacks, he looked solid in the first.
He did give up a double to a rise, but then he got through the rest of the lineup.
He was changing speeds well early.
Had issues kind of keeping his change up in the bottom of the zone.
He was trying to keep it in the zone, but couldn't.
So at least keeping it down because if he kept it up, that was trouble.
And that's when things started going problematic.
becoming problematic for him, but he was solved through his first three innings tonight,
only allowing two hits. And then there was that tragic, tragic fourth inning where
everything just completely went off the rails on Zach Gowan. And from there, the biggest
problem was that in the fifth it was more of the same. But it was just these little dinky
singles that had no business even landing for a hit. And I mean, that's just baseball sometimes.
but Zander Bogart's singled on a hit that went 179 feet
and had an exit velo of 64.3 miles per hour.
You had Gavin Sheets singling on a hit that went 72 feet
and had an exit velo of 79.3 miles per hour.
You could just tell that the Diamondbacks were,
that this was going to be a disaster with the way things were going.
And then Ryan O'Hern sings singles, he scores,
Zander Bogart's, that just begins it.
Then with two outs, Gallen walks Freddie Furman, and then with the bases loaded, Fernando Tatis Jr. hits a grand slam.
And that's really what put the game out of reach for the Diamondbacks.
It was five to two at that point.
And then, like I said, in the fifth inning, unfortunately, Galin could not get out of the fifth inning, could not really get any more things back on track just in generally walk Machado to lead off the inning, give out a one out single to Bogart's, and then sheets reached on a catching error by Perdomo to low.
to load the bases and end Gallin's night.
He goes four in a third innings pitched,
seven hits, six runs, five of which were earned,
three walks, three strikeouts.
Gallin ends the season here.
Excuse me, sorry,
Gallen ends the season with a 4.83 ERA.
And it's just going to be really interesting
to see how this impacts his offseason,
what this means for Zach Gallen.
Like I said earlier,
it's just an unceremonious end to his career.
Not only did we not have that true final home game.
And, you know, I can understand that.
Like I said, the pomp and circumstance surrounding something like that,
especially when a team is still in a wildcard race is perhaps distracting and maybe too much.
But Zach Galland was a pillar of this team.
He will go down as being, you know,
essentially the fourth best statistical pitcher in Diamondbacks history
behind Randy Johnson, Brandon Webb and Kurt Schilling, right?
and even he's above Kurt Schilling in a lot of categories there as well.
But like this is just a, I don't know, it's a very fitting end,
and it makes me wonder how this offseason is going to go.
It makes a lot of sense to me for this to go, you know,
the way that we all expected to where Zach Gallen becomes a free agent
and he exits this team.
The Diamondbacks offer him a qualifying offer, which he turns down.
And then Gallen, again, the Diamondbacks get that compensatory pick
in between rounds one and rounds two, which again,
And they're very, draft picks are very hard to come by.
Remember in Major League Baseball, you can't trade draft picks.
So the Diamondbacks, you know, getting a draft pick here at the end of essentially
round one is very important.
It's equally important, though, with the situation that they're in for 2026 for Zach Gallen
to just return to this team.
And offering Zach Gallen a qualifying offer that he might essentially accept isn't the
worst thing in the world.
I feel like the Diamondbacks are in a good position.
I feel like the one thing you don't want to do is at,
give Gallen a long-term deal, right?
Like there's still just so much uncertainty about who he's going to be,
what level of pitcher he's going to be,
how elite can he be?
Is he ever going to get back to that level that he was prior to even the 20,
23 season?
I don't know.
That might be doubtful.
Maybe he does still have a lot left in the tank.
I have to say that the change in catcher,
improving Gallin's season as much as it did,
leads me to believe that if Zach Gallen leaves this team,
we're going to see him magically have like a 2-5 ERA
and once again be one of the best pitchers in baseball.
I just think that the Diamondbacks overall are in a good position
in regards to the offer for Gallen because I don't think
that they're going to offer him a long-term deal.
So either he'll come back on the qualifying offer
because the annual value of that offer makes more sense for him
than trying to go get maybe a short-term multi-year deal
with another team that maybe is a.
paying him as much as the gown as the diamondbacks are offering him or you know he he walks to another
team and the diamondbacks can now go out and pursue another free agent pitcher or something else i'm with
you guys in the chat um there is uh uh i would like to see what what tori jobolo here says give nelly
five years 35 million extend ryan nelson ryanelson absolutely deserves it and i think ryan
Nelson is going to continue to be an incredible pitcher for this team.
I think Nelson's best years are still ahead of him.
I think he's going to continue to evolve with his breaking stuff.
And once he has two, give, give Brian Nelson like any breaking pitch that's as good as
his fastball, and he'll be one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Mark my words, but, and again, that's something that could change.
But today's game, Gallen had, what was it, just three strikeout.
So I don't know if you already threw up the strikeout meter, but it uses a lot of energy.
Ayrton, as you know, and we don't have that much energy left in this tiny room to really power the
Circle K strikeout meter. But at the very least, if this was a home game, those three strikeouts would
have gotten you a free any size polar pop. So do not miss out. This is the end of the line for this deal for
now, but do not miss out on texting strike to 31310. Getting down on all those Circle K deals for next year.
Again, you win with every with every K you win at Circle K. And don't forget, I really, I really
I realize today that Tori Lavello has given me the nickname Circle K.
And then I also realize that my Twitter handle is Captain Caveman with a K.
So essentially my Twitter handle and the stupid nickname he gave me, which isn't a stupid name.
That's not to dismiss Circle K.
They're a great store and their Circle K name is lovely for them, just not for me.
Do I look like a Circle K?
Do I look like someone that would be named Circle K?
But I hate the fact that it's the same initials in both things.
And I really feel owned by Tori with this nickname.
So that sucks.
And that puts me more on Killer X's side with this whole situation.
Philip Abner, by the way, he came into the game when Zach Gallen exited, and they asked him to do a lot.
He came into the game in the fifth with bases loaded and won out.
And honestly, he did a great job.
I mean, he wasn't perfect.
He did walk in Jay Cron and work to walk in a run.
But he struck out Ryan O'Hern and got Freddie Furman to pop out in the foul ground.
And that's about as much as you can ask of a reliever who just recently made his debut coming into the game
in a bases loaded situation against the San Diego Padres.
I feel like some of these situations,
and again, this is something I have criticized of Tori Lovolo,
have been unfair to the young pitchers that they put them into,
like literally throwing them into the lion's den
and being like, figure it out, kid.
But he was good.
He gave him two thirds of an innings pitch,
walked one, struck out one.
I'm really excited about Philip Abner's future with this team.
I think he's going to be a good part,
and I do like a lot of the,
I like a lot of the additions
that the team has made.
I was excited to see Andrew Hoffman get recalled.
I hope that he is healthy,
and I think he's a guy that could absolutely be outstanding for this team.
Plus, I gave him the nickname super bad,
and I love that nickname.
So let's see, Vic is saying, Derek,
we know you got an ASU jersey under.
That's neat that sweater.
Well, let me tell you,
I was very cold prior to being stuck in this closet with Ayrton
with these studio lights on me.
But as you can see, based on the sweat,
glazing my forehead. That's no longer the case, and I'm very much regretting this hoodie choice that I made.
But much like the Diamondbacks are probably regretting a lot of things about the way things stacked up for them this last week.
I do want, I know this is loser talk and it's fine, but I do want to say that overall,
I think that the Diamondbacks probably didn't have the roster should they have made it into the postseason to really make a far run.
Now, with that being said, I said the same thing in 2023 when they were matched up with the Brewers in the first round.
So what do I know, right?
But I just feel like, again, the way that Tori was talking about this starting
rotation just being tired and taxed and the bullpen still being taxed and then trying
to find arms, it really felt like they were going to limp into this postseason.
Maybe, you know, maybe make something fun happen.
But I just have a hard time imagining this roster making it very far.
I know that would have satisfied us all as would having a winning season.
And at this point, that's the only thing that I'm not.
coming backs can do right now to salvage this season that will involve them missing the postseason
once again for the second year in a row, right?
Is they could win the final two games and end the season with an 82 and 80 record and, you know,
and end with above 500 record.
I don't even know if that's possible at this point.
I'm very doubtful of that happening.
But, yeah, 81 and 81 seems like where they're going to end up, which I guess that's actually
more fitting for the way this season has gone.
This has just been terrible.
It's been awful. And we would love to see this not being the case.
But maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better by saying that the Diamondbacks wouldn't
have a good run in the postseason.
But we're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, we're going to take a look at the numbers from this game,
even though none of us don't want to.
And we're going to look at the Wild Card Race that the Diamondbacks are now no longer a part of.
So don't you go anywhere.
you're watching the pH and X Diamondback show.
Whatever the moment, it is never ordinary watching an Arizona Diamondbacks game.

All right, Ayrton.
Well, they accuse me of bringing down the mood and I've never been so angry about anything in my entire life.
like as if I wanted to bring down the mood.
Like I wanted my mood to be hyped.
We were out there high-fiving and stuff because of the ASU come back.
I was pumped about the Merck.
I couldn't believe how that game ended,
especially with the coach being tossed out.
Then I went and Erica threw me out of her game.
I didn't know she had that power,
but she ejected me out of their show.
So it's been a weird night.
But again, I am very sad by what's happened here by the dimebacks.
Unfortunately, we still have to look at the numbers from this game.
So let's take a look at the count,
presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union.
Diamondbacks lose this one by a score of seven to four.
The Diamondbacks get out hit here, eight to 12.
The Diamondbacks were 0 for six with runners in scoring position.
Yeah, that'll do it.
That'll do it for sure.
The Padres, meanwhile, were three for seven.
Diamondbacks actually had more extra base hits than the Padres, which is maddening.
They had three to the Padres two.
And then their expected batting average was 226 for the Diamondbacks and three, 17.
for the Padres.
Well, it's unfortunate that we're in this position now.
It's unfortunate that Diamondbacks have nothing really left to play for it here in the
final two games.
But hey, let's get Pardomo to that milestone and let's try to get a win.
Hi, Kevin.
Great to have you.
However, I'm still mad at you for beating me up on the last show together.
And also, you also told me to get out when Erica told me get out of the show.
So you get out of this show.
Kick him, ban, ban Kevin out of the chat.
please make sure to ban ban them for 24 hours because i think that'll really send the message that
i think we need to send here but uh let's take a look for the very last time because we're not going to
do this anymore we're not going to put ourselves through this on monday let's take a look for the
very last time at the drunken orgy of violence that we have been calling the wild card race
uh with our wild card standings here we are oh boy uh cubs 90 and 70 they got their spot
Padres 88 and 72, they got their spot. And now the Reds are tied with the Mets at 82 and 78.
And like I said, I honestly really at this point, hope the Mets fumble the bag.
I don't, I mean, they already did it, right? Like, I don't feel like they deserve to fall back this
far and then still make it. Like, I really do feel like if you're going to have an epic collapse,
there should be consequences for that epic collapse. And those consequences should be the
reds taking the final spot, even if it can't be the Debex. I also applaud the Marley.
who have nothing but spite to play for left and will probably end up sweeping the Mets.
And for that, they might become like my fifth favorite baseball team.
But the debacks now at 80 and 80 are officially eliminated two games back with just two games
to go.
Of course, basically the reason why here is that the Reds hold a tiebreaker over the debacks
and the Giants here sit three games back at 79, 81.
They're also done up.
this will be the second consecutive year that the Arizona Diamondbacks are essentially eliminated while playing the San Diego Padres.
And I know what you're thinking right now.
You're looking at me thinking,
there's no way, Derek, that the Diamondbacks are set to play the San Diego Padres in the final series of the 2026 season.
Right?
Right. Right?
Wrong.
That's exactly who they're playing.
in the final three games of the 2026 season.
Why have you forsaken us, MLB?
What did we do to deserve this?
That is incredible.
That's not even fun from a scheduling standpoint.
Why would you have them play the same team three years in a row in the final series?
Why are you doing this to us?
Like, it's amazing.
And now I said series, and now Siri thinks I'm talking to her.
and she's going to still think I'm talking to her because now I said her name.
But oh my God.
Yeah, that's exactly what's happening.
There.
See, there she goes.
I knew she was going to come alive.
Get out of here.
No one's talking to you.
Anyway, this is terrible.
And Stu says 2026 isn't going to be much better.
Still, everyone hurt.
Yeah, you're right, Stu.
Not to mention the fact that certain losses to key personnel are going to put the
diamondbacks in a position where they're going to have to fill.
a lot of roles, a lot of roles.
I mean, it's still great that their young core is intact.
It's great that they extended Geraldo Perdomo prior to this season.
Ketel Marte wants to be a diamond back forever,
and Corbyn Carol is our homegrown wonder boy, right?
And I still think Gabriel Moreno has a lot of promise,
but there were some things that really showed this year
that he is still not the best catcher behind the plate.
I mean, he was having, he really struggled this year
with getting runners out at third,
or at stealing base on second.
And, you know, based on what's happened here with James McCann,
I feel like there's really been,
I feel like Gabby's been exposed about his game calling,
at least, you know, a preference with going with James McCann
and improvement overall with the stats, with the numbers,
with a lot of the pitchers with James McCann behind the plate.
Not to mention, again, a veteran presence that he's provided
and huge, huge arms, and he is still sexy man,
Jimmy McCann, aka Big Body, James McCann.
But the hope for me,
is like keep McCann around, have McCann help continue to develop, you know, Gabriel Moreno and be a backup behind him and, you know, continue to add to this team.
Like Scott Mack says, re-sign McGahn.
I'm definitely on board with that.
But they're going to have a lot of other pieces that they're going to have to go out, a lot of other roles that they're going to have to fill.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Gallen, obviously.
Merrill Kelly, still a question mark if the Diamondbacks can go back out and pick him back up.
Obviously, he didn't, like, he didn't have a complete disaster with the Rangers, but his time with them.
wasn't extremely strong. He didn't build a huge case to, you know, resign with the Rangers,
nor do I know if anybody's going to want to give him a long-term deal. So I think that Diamondbacks
might value Kelly more than other teams and he might value coming back here, you know, to Arizona.
That would be great because quite frankly, with the injuries, as you said, Stu, this team is in a
lot of trouble to start the 2026 season. That goes back to my thoughts on Tori LeBalvo.
I don't think I've ever been shy about saying how much I like Tori as a person, right?
But at the end of the day, sometimes a change might be needed.
And I don't know if Tori is going to even have the best opportunity next season with the roster.
Not to mention, we still have no idea what's going to happen with the labor dispute beyond December 1st, 2026.
We have no idea if a 2020 season, seven season is even going to happen.
And based on the results on MLB trade rumors poll, it feels like a lot of fans are okay with sacrificing the 2027 season in order to get a salary cap and baseball.
And you can thank everyone can thank the Dodgers for that.
You can all thank the Dodgers for that and their acquisition of Tanner Scott.
Was it worth it, L.A.?
Was it worth it breaking baseball for Tanner Scott?
I hope so because we're all screwed come 2027.
let's hope they find some way to not careen off that cliff.
But a lot of work needs to be done.
And that goes for Major League Baseball.
It also goes for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
They have a lot of work to be done.
So I cannot emphasize enough that this offseason is going to be very, very difficult for them.
But I do feel like based on what they did when it was very hard to find arms and players to add.
to this team and bolster this roster, they were able to do so.
So maybe this offseason with some of those contracts coming off the books,
they might be able to maneuver and find some guys that can fill the roster holes,
especially pitching-wise, that they have until those arms return.
Because a lot of those arms are not coming back until the all-star break or beyond in
2026, which could be great, could be a disaster, right?
This brings me back to John Boy's proposal to have a first half winner.
in a second half winner because do you see how important that could be for the Diamondbacks of
2026 if they could get a playoff spot by being a good team in the second half? Just saying.
So anyway, we're going to take a quick break. Actually, we're not. We're just going to talk to you
guys about some stuff that we got going on around here. And then I have some more reaction to
the end of the season. But overall, don't forget right now, we have our die-hard sale. We just
launched our die-hard sale and fans now have more than one option to join. Two great deals.
The first offers are $36 intro offer.
That is the one you guys all know and love.
It's a diehard shirt.
New diehards can join for just $36 a year.
And this includes a free limited edition diehard shirt and all core diehard perks,
including premium content, Discord access, our welcome kit and 20% off events and merch.
But our second offer includes our ridiculously cool branded bills diehard hat.
And that's for $59 for new subscribers.
That includes a limited edition branded bill.
Bill's diehard hat. That goes full diehard access and all perks. And of course, this is just an
amazing deal. So make sure to get all that has all that stuff that the $36 offer has, but the $59
offer includes that amazing branded Bill's diehard hat. So do not miss out on that. If you've been
curious about joining us, it's a great thing to do. And like I said, one of the biggest perks is that
much like Candace has done, you guys can bully me into going live when I don't want to when I'm
sitting at home and joining a beer and watching football and baseball at the same time on my two TVs.
But no, I have to get off the couch and go do a show. And that's, again, the power that you have by
being a diehard. So that's probably the biggest perk forcing me to work, forcing a person to do work
when I don't want to. So I appreciate you guys that are diehards already. You guys really are the
reason why we are standing here right now. The reason why I am here right now doing this show is because
of you die hard. So I can't thank you guys enough. We are having a great
great event for little football action on October 19th out there at chicken and pickle.
If you have not been to chicken and pickle over by Westgate, it is an enormous facility,
almost the same size as Westgate itself, but it is a chicken or a pickleball facility,
indoor, outdoor. It's amazing. You can bring your whole family. You can bring large groups.
It's always a fun time, but it's going to be more fun when we are there. So join the PH&X Cardinals
crew for a pregame tailgate at Chicken and Pickle in Glendale before the Cardinals, take on the Packers
on October 19th at 11 a.m.
We're going to have PHNX merch giveaways, yard games,
drink specials, and so much more.
Go to go phnx.com slash events to RSVP for free for this event.
Oh, boy.
Well, I wanted to take a moment here at the end to just thank everybody,
especially those of you that have been here all season long.
Like I said, I know many of us have those friends.
I'm not staring at Ayrton by any stretch of imagination,
but then they just come up to us like the final week of the season.
They're like, hey, so the Diamondbacks do us.
Like, get out of here.
You haven't been here.
You haven't experienced the heartbreak, the highs, the lows, the disasters, the moments, the great moments.
The moments provided post-trade deadline, all those great moments.
You weren't here for that extra innings win here and there.
You weren't here for all this stuff, right?
So I feel like you guys have all been here this entire trip.
And I think that, again, you guys are the ones that deserve the king steak.
That's why we gave it to you yesterday.
But you guys have endured a lot this season.
It's been hard.
And I think that, again, the 2023 season has really messed with our expectations quite a bit.
And as you know, I do a little thing called meetings with the mayor.
You can go hear more about expectations on that when that posts over on YouTube.
But the expectations were difficult to deal with.
And they always seem to be.
They seem like the expectations weigh this team down and make it difficult for them.
to just play baseball, right?
And I feel like they've had a lot of moments this year
where they tried to do everything they could
to focus on playing baseball
and not let those expectations
or the outside noise affect them.
When this team is in an underdog role,
they somehow thrive, especially,
I think Tori Lavallo as a manager.
I think that's who he is as a person.
I think Tori has overcome a lot of adversity,
and I think that that's where he leads well from.
But when it comes to having expectations
for some reason,
this team has failed to live up to them.
them. And I think that, again, it's been a weird season, but I still give them a lot of credit
for the fight and for the fact that we are here now finally on September 26th talking about their
season being over when, quite frankly, we should have been talking about it on August 26th.
That should have been reasonably when their season actually was over.
But they played a different level of baseball and a lot of guys, a lot of young guys that are
going to hopefully be a part of this team for a long time stepped up.
they sell a lot of, you know, again, decisions to be made and a lot of even position player
roles to look at here, you know, going in to 2026. So a lot of changes I expect to be made
with this roster. And I hope that they continue to keep this team competitive because there are a lot
of great players that are going to be a diamond back for a while. And I would like to see them
have a chance at, you know, having a competitive team around them for their entire
careers and that includes Corbyn-Carrollo and Rodo Perdomo and Cattel Marte. Those guys deserve it.
But, you know, hey, now we sit here at this point. I do, again, thank you guys, though, because
this season has been incredible and difficult for me personally. This is the first entire season.
I've had to do this show by myself. Damon has been incredible. Erriton has been amazing. Kevin,
when he was here, was all right. But overall, this has been a really, really
amazing season. And I think that I've grown a lot watching this team and I've grown a lot because of you guys.
Killer Rex is literally like yelled at me enough that I think I've like, I don't know.
I've completely jumped ship on on ideas about who I want fired and who I don't want fired.
I don't really know. But again, love you guys so much and I appreciate you guys.
It's been incredible. I think we have some super chats to get to before we get out of here.
By the way, SBG, I can't tell you how much I love working with SPG.
much that man knows about baseball or basketball and what an incredible talent he is to have here
at PHNX. So make sure to check out the Sun Show. Make sure to check out the Mercury Show. He's doing
incredible work over there. What do we got here for some super chats? Ayrton before we got here.
BCSC says ballerina is doing pirouettes inside of my snow globe. I know that's a reference in a song
or something dirty, but it is what it is. Shopping Strees in Soho, you had to see it.
Merck handling the links, Ace Trumpets, and Ramos. It's some bars. Those are some
bars for sure. What else we got, Ayrton? Thank you, BCSC for your super chats.
A B says, here lies the 25 snake season. Warriors that battle to the very end, we shall honor them
in the halls of Bahala. A moment of silence, please. All right, we respect, we respect the end of this.
Thank you so much. Appreciate you guys, of course, as always, for your super chats. And again,
for your support, we're not going anywhere. For those of you wondering what happens with this show,
I'm wondering that too. No, I'm joking. We'll be here. We're still going to do stuff during the postseason.
We're going to cover the postseason.
We're going to cover the mother effing yoffs.
Maybe do some watchalogs even during the yoffs.
Why not?
Because we're going to still be watching baseball until the bitter end.
And then we'll be still here through the off season.
So make sure to join us.
What are we going to talk about?
I don't know.
But we have a lot of things to cover in regards to what went wrong with the 2025 season.
So I will get started there.
Plus we have winter meetings and trade or not trade deadline,
but free agency season to see what this Diamondbacks team can be in 2026.
So make sure you do not.
go anywhere, keep it locked right here to PHNX.
Plus, I'll be storming in on these other shows all the time.
But for the most part, we'll be doing 12 p.m.
shows starting next week outside of maybe some postgame shows, like I said, for the playoffs.
So we'll keep you updated on the schedule.
But again, we appreciate you guys so much for your time.
Thank you so much.
Like I've said, all season long, your time is your most valuable commodity.
Be careful who you share it with, and I can't thank you enough for sharing it with us.
So thank you again.
Of course, make sure to follow us on Twitter.
I'm at cap underscore caveman with the K.
Ayrton has the coolest Twitter handle in the world.
It's freckled mamba.
Our show is at PHNX underscore DVax.
But as always, all roads lead to at PHNX underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
We thank you guys.
Love you guys.
Appreciate you.
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.
At least try to.
Maybe watch baseball.
Maybe don't.
Football's on.
Ride the high of what the Mercury and the ASU Sun Devils are doing and have yourself a great weekend.
I hope all of your fantasy football teams win except Greg Esposito.
I hope his fantasy football.
team has the worst weekend of any team ever. And until Monday, again, I appreciate you guys so much.
Sorry it ended this way and we'll try to get it right next year. But until then, like I said,
thank you again. Behave yourselves and remember kids, baseball is fun. But damn it,
it's so much more fun when you don't get eliminated from playoff contention.
