Ken Kendrick made some interesting comments about the Diamondbacks payroll for 27 a year where we don't even know what payrolls are going to look like or what MLB is going to look like.
We're talking about all of it right now.
Don't you go anywhere.
Back show presented by our friends at Circle K.
I am your mayor of PHNX occasionally known as Derek Montia.
Thrilled to have you guys here.
Happy Monday to you all.
Welcome to another edition of the PHNX Diamondback show.
Brought to you by our friends at Game Time.

You'll get yourself $20 off your first purchase terms to apply.
Not alone.
Of course, I got you wonderful people here in the chat with us,
including Jason, who's pointing out that I look surprisingly spry
for an unc who saw the Wu-Tang Clan last night.
It wasn't just the Wu-Tang Clan.
Let me stress to you that it was all five members of Bone Thugs in Harmony.
That's like the Fuji's showing.
up on time. That's like, I can't even
I don't even know what else. It's like seeing multiple shooting stars
in one night, it's like going to ride
horses and finding out the horse they chose for you is actually a
unicorn. That's what seeing all five members of bone thugs
in harmony is like, but as I said on Southwest bias,
you throw in all 10 members including Capadana of Wu-Tang Clan?
Yeah, I mean, I bought lottery tickets on the way home. It was definitely a
special night, but thrilled to have you guys here.
Of course, thrilled to be talking Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, even if what we're talking about is a budget diminishing.
I'm not alone.
Again, I have you guys, you wonderful people.
I got my guy, Damon, Farrell Damon, aka the bad boy, Ph. and X. Damon dog on the ones and twos, bark, and happy Monday to you, Damon.
Hello, Montya, Derek.
I'm thrilled.
I like that we're saying names out of order like that.
Yours is just Farrell Damon seems like an actual, like, accurate description of you.
It's not me saying your last name first, but regardless.
I like Montiadaric.
I am, I don't like hearing, once again,
more off-season comments about the Diamondbacks not having money to spend next year.
I don't love hearing Ken Kendrick's comments about the payroll being reduced.
I will say, though, I have heard that before.
So I've heard that before.
And I don't know if necessarily they really did reduce their payroll.
Yeah, we heard it all last off-season.
I also feel like, Damon, that there's no way to really even say this without knowing what baseball is going to look like in 2027 with a new CBA and changes overall.
But that's what Ken Kendrick said on Friday.
He told Burns & Gambo that the debacks will not maintain their 2026 level of spending.
He said, quote, it will not be at the same level.
It will be a lower payroll than we had this year.
So again, at least that's open to interpretation because $1 less is technically less.
but he did say that with some,
we have some very significant contracts that are expiring
with unfortunately players that made little or no contributions to the team.
He's so honest.
Not only is he honest, Damon,
but he kind of whittled it down to like one guy there basically as far as to.
Yeah, I mean, it's Zach Gallen primarily, right?
Is that who you're thinking of?
$20 million for Zach Gallen, absolutely,
to have the worst ERA in all of baseball.
I think that from an owner's perspective,
it was a colossal failure.
I think from Zach's perspective, it was a colossal failure.
And I think from a money spending perspective,
you could have had Mitch Bratt in the starting rotation all year long
and given you probably slightly better ERA than that.
And gotten like a superstar type of first baseman or maybe not super star.
You could have spent $20 million on?
Yeah, but maybe like just like a very above average guy that is being paid a lot of money.
I think the thing that he said that was most important to me is that he said,
quote, you don't spend the money just to spend the money. You spend the money you think is
appropriate to put a winning club on the field. And I think from one perspective there, it is the idea
that some of the money that they have spent, Damon, has been based in a little bit of nostalgia,
not nostalgia, but based on like what you accomplished at one point in your time with this franchise,
not necessarily forecasting you to be that same player going forward. And Zach is,
isn't the only guy you could say that about.
Lordus Gurriel Jr. is very much another guy who he could be talking about here with these comments,
considering that's very true brought him back,
expecting him to be what he was in 23 for this team.
And you could argue he has not been that, you know.
But I do agree with Ken on one thing.
I agree with him on spending less money.
That's a general life philosophy for me,
unless it comes to my wacky clothes that I wear and then my budget is endless.
Or your arcade games in your house.
Hold on, hold on.
We could continue your memorabilia.
That big ball machine was bought on clearance and you know it and you know that I love saving money.
I love saving money even if it's involves me spending a lot of money I don't have.
It would be like throwing money away to not buy this big buck hunter for $300.
You know, I bought an inflatable spa this weekend because it was on clearance at Walmart for $50.
I'm sure you did.
On sale from $398.
I wasn't supposed to spend that.
That's like throwing away $348 just right into the trash.
The problem is, Derek, is that sometimes you end up spending $50 of your money on Jordan Montgomery,
and he's a disaster, and he didn't show up in shape, and all of a sudden, you never,
you use that spa one time and you're throwing it out on the street.
It didn't work from the first day I got it.
It leaked.
The lights didn't work.
Three of the jets were broken.
Oh, my God.
but I do think that like, you know, you're making good points though, Derek, about, you know, just Ken Kendrick in general.
Yes, he has had a similar sentiment last offseason as well.
And then he saw an opportunity as, you know, he kind of outlines there that is like when you have a chance to get somebody that you think is a good value contract, you go after it.
And I think that he has proven in the last couple off seasons that they will attack if they feel like there's value out there.
It hasn't worked out well for this team at all when you talk about.
about those moves, but, and maybe that keeps him from doing those moves anymore.
But I do think that, you know, there's, it's always going to be a question mark in our heads of
like, is Ken Kendrick just going to go out there and spend a bunch of money because he thinks
that it's a good deal?
I don't know.
I think it's possible.
But I do think that we should assume that costs will be cut here going into next year.
You and I spoke about it.
And it very much felt like the Jordan Montgomery signing was perhaps, you know, instigated by
Kendrick, maybe even the Corbyn-Burns signing.
However, those might just be things that once someone like Ken Kendrick hears that those
caliber players are interested in playing in Arizona, that that might be where he's like,
oh, well, if you're talking about Jordan Montgomery, then yes, we'll spend the money, right?
Or if you're talking about a Corbin-Burns, yes, we'll spend the money.
I also agree with what Fleaball said, and that's to be transparent.
Flea ball said, to be fair, I think we were all in on the gallon signing, maybe for
nostalgic reasons.
It just did not work.
I do agree that I think that, you know, there is some nostalgia there even for us as fans.
And I do think that I definitely don't remember hating the signing when they brought Zach Gallen back for one year.
I don't remember hating it.
However, I did think that, you know, the Diamondbacks were losing out on an opportunity to get that competitive draft pick or competitive balance draft pick.
But players didn't want to give that up or teams didn't want to give that up for a gallon.
and they were right to not to give it up for gallon.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, that was always going to be the thing is like it didn't seem like he was going to make enough money for the dimebacks to get that competitive balance pick.
Correct.
And so.
Yeah, that was going to be part of it too.
You're absolutely right.
Because then he leaves for less than that.
And then it's the other competitive balance round, which is later and not nearly as valuable as a pick, which.
It's not a first or pseudo first rounder where you got Ryan Walschman, for example.
Yeah.
Competitive balance pick after the first round is basically like you said, a first round.
Yeah, I mean, it's, I think that just in general, Derek, like that I am of the opinion of the Diamondbacks will, I think, kind of look at everything in a vacuum.
And if they're like, as I said, like, if they think that there's a good value signing out there late in the process again, there is a chance that they go and attack that and try to make that signing.
But when you look at the guys that are leaving this team after this season, we can assume that Lortis is going to be given his $5 million buyout in the D-backs.
will save $9 million in the process there.
I think that, you know, you can see that the cost cutting is being done by weeding out
the worst players on this team.
That's fair.
And so it's not even a big deal that they're cutting costs.
Truthfully, in my opinion, it's like, all right, yeah, trim the fat, get rid of all the
players that weren't helping you win baseball games, but we're taking up, you know, a combined
$50 million in salary.
And then you can reassess that money in other places or at the deadline if you're
team's good.
Maybe my casing can actually go out and make some moves next time.
Like there are a lot of different avenues that you give yourself when you have,
when you,
you trim that fat and you get that money down in a place that is a lot more reasonable.
So I don't think it's that big of a deal that Ken Kendrick is saying that we're going
to cut costs necessarily,
but I know that it's like as a fan base, you hear that and you go, well, then why do I go
to the ballpark?
You know what I mean?
Like that's, it's the optics of it.
And we talk a lot about Ken Kendrick and,
his PR ability on this show, but he just has no feel for what he should be saying to media
and what he shouldn't be saying to media.
That, like, again, I think that when you, when you contextualize it, it makes perfect sense.
And like, and he explained himself.
As he explains it even, yeah, is that is what we're saying right now, which is you're getting
rid of a lot of players that are making a ton of money and didn't help you win any baseball
games this year.
But when your owner comes out and says, I'm cutting costs next season, that's going to
turn off a lot of people in your fan base when you haven't been winning a ton recently. And obviously,
we talk about the standards of this fan base, but this fan base is clearly pretty fed up at this
moment in time. Well, we have a huge unknown in Corbyn Burns. I mean, I think we're fairly confident he's
going to return, but should he not return? That's going to change a lot of things for this team.
Michael Soroka expressed interest in returning to this team after the season was over. He said that
he chose Arizona for a reason and that he would love to come back.
Obviously, the money is going to be much different after the season he had that's $7.5 million for one year.
Just like the Merrill Kelly deal now stands as Mark is saying in the chat, as one of the largest contracts we have.
And Merrill had a bad season and, you know, is being considered washed.
I don't think that he's completely washed.
I think Merrill can still have value as being a pitcher in your starting rotation.
He needs some innings this year, you know?
Like I don't want to.
He definitely went down, though.
I mean, he's definitely more of your fourth or fifth guy at this point rather than.
being a two in your starting rotation. So there, and there is a lot of money invested there.
But I mean, Ken Kendrick said, I think, quote, I think we can put a winning club on the field based
on some of the high dollar players going away. That's going to be very competitive. And I agree with
him when it comes to that. How can you not say that after watching these young rookies come up
and have the success they had? Why do you need to go out and get a bunch of high price players when the
clock has already started on Ryan Walsh Schmidt and his career and the careers of other guys out of
major league level. Like for Mike Hazen, this doesn't sound like rebuilding as much as this just
sounds like you're going to have to be smarter with the money. And we're not going to go out and
get those super high price free agents on the market and overpay for guys. I mean, last year,
they were aggressive, but they were aggressive in a budget bargain bin kind of way, you know,
and the expensive players didn't work out. The cheap players did. The Sorokas and the Nolan Aronados.
Eldamaro Vargas, right? And Elamaro Vargas, right? Like those guys worked out. What didn't work out was
obviously Carlos Santana being your solution at first base that wasn't even a monetary thing
but Zach Gallin and Merrill Kelly being the two that you spent the most money on that are not
you know contributing at the way the way that you expected them to right but they're still like
as mark is detailing jack summers over at sniggs territory slash debacks on s i he broke down a lot
of their you know payroll concerns and a lot of those concerns are going to be it's going to
it hard for this team to spend less and fill the amount of positional needs that they need
that they need to fill going forward. But that's just that. Then you have the Cotel Marte
situation that Ken also spoke about it, making it very clear that managing Cotel Marte is not
his job, right? He said it's not my job to micromanage the players. It's Tori's job to
manage the players. But he acknowledged that we've had a good, a lot of good results from Cotel
and we've had some unfortunate acts of immaturity that needs to hand.
I hope that Kattel, if he is a diamond back,
I hope he will be the player that he has the talent to be.
And I honestly think that that's really well said,
but I think the problem there is the thing that's getting attention
is the if he is a diamond back portion of it.
Right?
There's a lot of language like that when it comes to Ketel Marte lately
with some of these explanations from not just Ken Kendrick,
but also from Mike Hazen and Toy LaVolo.
Like there's a lot of like hypothetical Cotel Marte being here kind of situations.
And even though they're saying that, it really doesn't concern me.
I think they're just trying to send a message to Cotel.
Quite frankly, I mean.
How does he respond to that though?
Yeah, how does he respond to that?
Because in the past he hasn't responded well.
No, his response has been very immature the past couple of seasons, obviously.
So.
I mean, immaturity is such a key there.
I think it's something Rock and I spoke about on D-Backs after dark last night.
man, I'll tell you, I love Catele.
I love the way he plays the game.
But in a way, what have I described Catelle as?
He plays the game in like a precocious scamp little way.
He plays the game like he's a kid out there.
It looks like he's loving every minute of playing baseball.
He's getting along with the opposing players and giving them hugs and joking around with them and stuff.
Like it's the reason why I like to watch Catell play baseball.
And I say that he's one of my favorite players to watch.
but that, you know, that stuff is very childlike.
And again, you could say that that Cattel's biggest problem is maturity, right?
It's not talent.
It's not anything else.
I just think that overall, when you're talking about somebody that still finished
the season 249, 316, 432 with 22 home runs and 76 RBI,
it's hard to say you want that guy off your team considering that is a bad season for that
particular player, right?
But as we've talked about, even if the Diamondbacks wanted to explore a trade, you have multiple reasons why that's not a great option right now.
Not only does Contel control where he goes, but he also has probably the lowest value he's had since the Diamondbacks acquired him from the Seattle Mariners.
Yeah.
I mean, well, maybe not the lowest, but just because, you know, he was kind of an unknown commodity at that time.
but I think certainly since he started becoming a everyday starter for the diamond back.
This is probably his lowest value.
And yeah, I mean, it wasn't a good season for Catelle, but he's still a very good player, despite that.
I think that we can all see that.
He still makes game-changing type of plays, game-changing at-bats for your team.
And I think that the ceiling of the D-Backs is at its best when Cotel Marte is on fire,
and he's hitting in the top of your lineup for, you know, every single game,
night in and night out.
But it does feel like that the organization is at its absolute breaking point when it comes
to their feelings around his attitude and his professionalism.
And I think that we have speculated in a reckless speculation on this show.
It's our favorite thing to do.
100%.
That Ken Kendrick is the guy who keeps leaking stuff about Ketal Marte to the media.
And that that has a lot to do with potentially.
maybe the diamondbacks, you know, sending stuff to Bob Nightingale of like they're unhappy with
Cattel because it just doesn't really make any sense for Mike Hason to be doing that. And we know
Mike Hason likes to keep those things close to the chest more so. So who's leaking it? And I definitely
don't think it's Tori, who's gone out of his way to kind of human shield, you know, while Cattel's
sleeping that meme of the soldier taking the darts. That's Tori with Cattel in the past couple of seasons here.
So to me, that tells me that it's someone even above that, which would be either Derek Hall or Ken Kendrick.
And both have made comments recently about them kind of being done with the Cattell off-field antics.
I agree.
And I think that they want, I think the ideal version for the D-Backs is that Catell is the professional that he needs to be because they know he's the player that can help this team win a lot of baseball games already.
And so I think that agreed, I agree with you.
Like they're all the like if Catell is on the team stuff is trying to put.
him, but it's going to be interesting to see how that ends up playing out because I don't
have like full trust that Kattel is going to respond appropriately to that kind of, you know,
tough love.
I think overall it's kind of an overreaction by anybody that takes, you know, Ken Kendrick's
comments as if Ketel isn't going to be here.
But I will say it's something that everybody that's within the organization, Derek Kall,
Tori Lovallo, Mike Hazen, Ken Kendrick, they've all used.
use that same kind of phrase that suggests that there is a possibility or a non-zero chance
that Kattel could be not, he might not be a diamond back next year, right? But at the end of the
day, it's stuff like what Derek Hall said, which is he's one of the best players in baseball. And
when he's locked in, he's a near impossible out that makes you believe that there's no way this
organization is stupid enough to trade Kutel for pennies on the dollar. Right. And his trade value
He couldn't be lower than it is, and his 10 and five rights make it impossible to trade him unless he wants to go.
So overall, it doesn't feel like there's any benefit here.
What you're trying to do is you're trying to get your superstar player to hear your comments through the media and through other ways and hope that it resonates with him.
You might have tried everything else that you feel like you've tried, and now this is the way, this is the course of action that you feel like you need to go.
It's like what I said about Tori deciding to pivot from his typical philosophy,
of protecting his players to now saying he's not going to do that anymore going forward
in 2027.
You're going to switch it up because it wasn't working, obviously.
Well, and he also gets so much of the blame because he takes so much of the blame that
now you have a fan base that's like a considerable portion of it is ravenous for him to be
fired and be out of here, not to be manager anymore.
And part of that is because of the fact that he accepts blame all the time.
So you don't, that's who you blame.
Which is good leadership.
It is.
But eventually you get sick of that leader because you're blaming him all the time and you're
starting to feel like he's incompetent due to the amount of blame that he's taking on.
You know?
And that's that's his own fault because he does protect his players, takes on that blame.
That ended when Cotell Marte was a no show in Boston.
That was why it was so surprising to see him handle it that way.
But overall, I don't believe that any of this is the end of Marte's time here.
I could be wrong.
I don't really know.
I just still think that this is the team trying to get Cattel to mature and grow up and reach that
next level of not only his career, but his life.
where he can accept criticism publicly, openly, and be okay with it and not have it impact his mental state and not have him break down and, you know, go the opposite direction, have it motivate him.
Have him want to, you know, impress his bosses.
And his bosses are these guys that are talking about him right now that we're talking about.
And I don't want to get personal, but I do think back on Tori's comments where he's getting emotional talking about.
He doesn't know if Ketal has the right people for stability reasons.
in his life.
You know what I mean?
It feels like that's a big portion of this is that
Catell is the type of guy who needs people in his corner
that are going to help him and guide him in the right direction.
The D-backs are trying to do so,
but I don't know that Catell has necessarily been open to that fully.
Sure.
And so that's going to be, I think, something that he's going to have to change as well.
But obviously, we're not in the room.
We don't know exactly what went down with all of this.
Yes.
But it seems as though the D-backs are pretty consensus.
in their and aligned in their way that they want to move forward with Katel,
which is a little bit more of a tough love angle than maybe the sweep it under the rug
way that they've done things in the past to try to protect him,
it's time to actually change that behavior and, you know,
be a better teammate, be a better leader in that locker room.
Even if it's just a lead by example thing for Kutel,
if it's not like a vocal leader thing as one of the better players,
that's just not a good standard to uphold.
so hopefully Kutel can can you know weed some of that stuff out.
Just to address, Mark says really sucks that we only have Gabby for next season though.
No, Gabby's under-
We have two more arbitration years ago.
Yeah, he's an unrestricted free agent in 2029 if I'm not mistaken.
I tend to mess that stuff up so I could be wrong about that.
But I do think we got two more years of Gabby.
And then if you think about that, that aligns with Tori and Mike Hazen's time here.
not to say that it's immediate that Gabby's not going to return to Arizona,
but if he keeps this up and wins another batting title
or keeps being one of the best hitting catchers in baseball,
it's going to be hard to retain him for not a ton of money, right?
But even if he does,
has a regress to the mean type of year next year,
which I think he'll still be very good.
But let's say that his season looks a little bit more like past Gabby seasons
rather than, you know, 2026 in particular.
I think it's going to be really difficult for this.
the debacks to sign him because him and his agent are going to point to this season and be like,
Of course.
If we reach free agency, we're going to be one of the highest paid catchers in baseball because
in recent memory, he's been one of the best catchers in baseball.
And the Diamondbacks are going to be like, that was an outlier year.
If you look at all his other years, he's one of the 10ish best catchers in baseball,
but he's not top two like he was this season.
And I think that you could see some budding of heads from that standpoint.
So, I mean, this season, as great as it was from Gabby, it's possible it screwed the Diamondbacks long term keeping him.
And also, you know, like you didn't even get the reward of making playoffs with as good as Gabby was playing, which really sucks.
You feel like you almost wasted this like elite season out of Gabby Moreno.
Tori mismanaged the situation once again.
He should have been Gabby in there in that final game.
Tori should have extended Gabby.
Tory should have extended Gabby before the season.
What was he thinking?
Yeah. Why didn't Tori sign Davy to a contract extension?
Why didn't Tori tell Mike we need to extend this guy in spring training after seeing him hit in the cages?
It's unbelievable poor management.
Foolish. I'll also say this. Congrats to Gabby. Cudos to Gabby. Because Gabby bet on himself by not signing an extension.
And now he is going to make an ungodly amount of money whenever he decides to get paid rather than whatever extension the Diamondbacks probably offered him.
So by betting on himself, he probably increased maybe a couple of zeros there in his bank account overall.
But again, when it comes to this payroll stuff, it's really about if the debacks are cutting payroll because they believe this roster needs to be retooled or because at this point, Ken Kendrick simply does not trust the previous spending to produce results since it hasn't produced said results.
Also, said results have still ended up with us playing a whole lot of minor league players
and having a lot of guys that had big contracts like Lordus and Corbin Burns missing time this season,
a lot of time.
So anyway, we're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, we're going to talk about the results from the MLB playoffs this weekend.
And we're going to be Squidward looking out of the great at all the other teams having fun.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Well, the football season is heating up and every week feels bigger with Draft King's sportsbook,
the number one sports book for live betting.
And live betting can be fun unless you are betting on our football team, which live betting
when you think something's going to happen like a game winning touchdown could be a nightmare
for you potentially.
But the game can change in an instant with Draft King's live betting.
You can pick.
Your next pick can change right along with it.

Some of us are Carson Host of Our guys.
Oh, oh.
Yeah, see, Damon's doing this thing where he hates me.
And we're just rivals on everything now.
Yeah, yeah.
I say, I say I like, I've been a Carson Host of our fan, Derek, for my entire life.
Donald Duck's the best and Damon's like, oh, Mickey Mouse is actually better.
It's the most absurd contradictory behavior I've ever experienced in my life.
I'm over here enjoying the fact that the Padre's lost and Damon's over here boohooing about the ball getting hit off of a beam and registering an out for that ringless bum of a franchise.
Boohooing?
I mean, is it boohooing to say if my team had that happened to me, I would literally burn the MLB offices to the ground.
Well, that's definitely true.
And I would be arrested for crimes that would put me away for years and years and years.
Like, that's, I'm not saying I'm not happy that it happened to the Padres.
Like, I'm glad that they're out.
But that was, yeah.
That's the most painful existence of postseason baseball I think I've ever seen in my life.
Yeah, no, I mean, honestly, the one.
Moonshot.
The walk-off two-runs single by Jackson Shurio the next night, too, to win it.
It's unbelievable.
in the bottom of the ninth, right?
And then the Tiberance moon shot that went so high and so hard.
Like that would happen here, Damon.
That would happen at our ballpark because our ballpark is very similar to.
Same, yeah, like stadium design, I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, it's very similar to stadium design.
I mean, again, it was this.
I've never seen a ball hit the roof at Chase Field.
I have never seen that either.
I don't even know if it's happened at American Family Field.
I mean, it's notorious for happening at the catwalks at Tropicana, but not necessarily there.
And again, also, the fact that if it would have ricocheted and gone anywhere else,
it would have been a ground rule double,
but because it went right into the mid of a defender, that, yeah, that's how it ends.
That's how it ends.
It's kind of fitting, I feel like overall.
But I also don't really like the brewers for what happened with them back in the day.
So I'm not, like, rooting for the brewers.
I just wish both teams could lose.
Meanwhile, I mean, I'm looking here, Derek, just FYI on this, on baseball savant, that hit the roof and it still would have been a home run in one out of 30 ballparks.
Oh, just one?
No, but that's, I don't think it's taking into account how far it would have tracked if it didn't hit the roof.
Oh, okay.
I think it's saying that even with it hitting the roof, it traveled far enough for it to be a home run in the Astros Stadium, which is,
wild he caught it on the track and it's like i just i mean that was that should that would have been
30 out of 30 ballparks that would have been a home run and if it didn't hit the roof yeah oh my god
i can't imagine losing a baseball game like that in the postseason that's how my season ends
yeah i don't can it happen to the dodgers well that's what i really want i'll tell you the braves
at least tied the series up with the dodgers i mean terrick scubble got his well
win there in game one but in game two michael harris the second was the offensive star going three for five
just a home run short of the cycle a double triple rbi run scored i almost bet on him to hit a home run too
i would have been sick oh i bet you oh my god you would have been sick i would have been so mad
hitting for the cycle and not getting the home run or even everything else uh alana's bullpen was
phenomenal they basically combined uh they did a bullpen game right they did ray cur and didier flentes
combined for six in the third innings and only allowed one run by the Dodgers.
Dodgers went 0 for eight with runners in scoring position.
That sounds familiar as far as our team is concerned.
And now the series heads to Atlanta tied one-one with Chris Sale,
expected to start game three for the Braves.
While the Dodgers lineup is dangerous,
they left a ton of opportunities out there
and showed that any team on any given day can be a bunch of hitless bums.
Meanwhile, Atlanta showed it can win a game without relying heavily on its really good
starting pitching. So again, it's going to be interesting to see how this series goes,
considering they were able to win this particular game, Damon. I mean, that was the most
massive win, I think, so far of any of these postseason games. In terms of like, you're fighting
for your life. You need to win that game. And the Braves, like, they go into it with a bullpen game
up against Blake Snell. Yeah. And in a playoff game, in a baseball playoff game, the Braves were like,
plus 180 or something like that on the money line.
The Dodgers were like minus 200.
I mean,
it was,
it was like heavy favorites for the Dodgers in a postseason type of game,
postseason format.
And the Braves,
they miraculously get it done.
It's one one.
And I think like new life,
new life if you're the Braves.
I mean,
obviously it's best two out of three here for the final,
you know,
part of this series.
But you won your bullpen game and now you got Chris Sale.
And yeah,
I think the Braves are.
I mean, I, that, that, that game is like the difference between being like, it's over or we might have something here.
Yeah, yeah.
Hold on.
So, I mean, I, I have never, I've never been a bigger fan of any team in my entire life than I am of the other end of race right now.
Not letting you do that racist chop, but White Sox versus Guardians, White Sox still haven't lost the game in the postseason, Damon.
They're pitching completely controlled the game.
Guardians managed just three hits in the Chicago White Sox, your Chicago White Sox.
are now up one to nothing on the Guardians.
And honestly, could quietly,
I mean, the White Sox could be the biggest upset story
in this entire postseason.
I love it.
I just, I don't feel like it's set up for them to necessarily,
for it to be impossible, right?
At this point, it seems like the Guardians are very meetable
for the White Sox.
And meanwhile, you got the Raids and the Yankees,
where the Raes lead the Yankees won to nothing
in a game that they won, one to nothing,
with a very, very impressive start there by Drew Rasmussen.
but overall again it feels like it feels like that the white socks could potentially be even the
raise should they face them in the ALCS so that's interesting and again whatever the hell is
happening in the national league right now is also very interesting and I agree with Garrett
Miracami Miracami oh anyway I mean he's the most likable player in the sport I've never
I've never seen any like you we like him we know we like him we've liked him we've liked him
for a long time. We wanted him when he was a free agent.
We did.
This past off season, right?
But.
And we were, and we were like, we've never been more right about anything.
Who has not nearly been the player that Miracami turned into.
So a lot of it is the fact that I wanted Marikami more than in my though.
I mean, I think that and not to throw you under the bus here.
I think you really like the Mai because in part he was like, I want to play for.
I want to beat anybody about the Dodgers.
I want to beat them in the world series.
That's why we all liked him.
Which is pretty endearing, I will say.
But Murakami, like, in terms of, I mean, I've been first base.
D-H left-handed power-hitting guy for as long as this team has looked like what it has looked like going into the 2026 season.
And I mean, Murakami would have changed everything.
He would have changed everything about this season.
Like we would be, we would be still in playing games right now, I think.
We might be division.
And ever since he said power on MLB network, when he was asked what he brings to the table and he said power.
Me and Derek have been like, this is the greatest player that has ever graced a baseball.
Remember when he was asked like what the difference is?
The water pressure.
Jeff in Japan versus here as far as the culture and the fans and the teams and showerheads.
And he said water pressure.
Yeah.
Shower heads have a lot better water pressure in Japan.
The state sucks.
Yeah.
Can we talk about the lack of bad days around here?
Don't even get me starting on the bad days.
He's awesome, man.
He's great.
He is so likable and so fun.
And it's funny too because I have like.
Like, he, like, I've said this before.
He's my favorite non-Diamenback going right now.
I don't even think it's a discussion.
And people will be like,
Damon's not allowed in Japan if he,
if he, like, ever tried to travel there because I much I hate Otani.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
I love Ichero.
I love Murakami.
Like, this is not a Japanese thing.
This is a destroying baseball and it seems thing.
It's a law in order.
It's a, it's a true characterization of who you are as a person.
And Otani does nothing but.
commit white collar crime after white collar crime.
I'm done with it.
I'm done with it.
Yeah, 100%.
I knew you would be.
Well, we got lots of exciting action to watch.
Of course, the Brewers could put away the Padres here.
And, you know, again, the series turning back to Atlanta with the Braves splitting it looks very good for them at this point.
But of course, we'll keep unfortunately talking about the other teams that are in the playoffs that aren't our team.
I mean, we are white.
We are the C.
We are the C.
You're right.
You're right. I don't know why. I don't know why I said that.
Well, come on into the CHDO whitesaw.
Sorry, Sean.
We're taking over.
So anyway, we're going to take.
Chain snatched.
Yeah, for sure.
This is our content now.
We're rebranding.
It's true.

I'll wear that.
So anyway.

Your dad's the best.
Your dad start following me on Instagram, so I can't even tell you how happy I am to talk about Dennis.

month on the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast is Black Women's History Month. Every single week is Shark Week,

and I recycle. But on Mondays, we go to the mailbag. Damon, if you wouldn't mind, let's go to the
mailbag.
there's a letter that makes me go out.
Always something interesting.
All right, Damon.
Of course, our mailbag Mondays are always powered by GameTime.
Use that code of P.H. and extra $20 off your first purchase on the GameTime app.
Damon, what do we got in the mailbag today?
So special, that logo with the mailbag, as always.
And the fangs on it, too.
A little snake guy.
Yeah, it's unbelievable.
We have Travis Moore, as always, leading us off saying,
what is the criteria that need to be met to be eligible for Sunday dinner invites?
also is Chile an acceptable contribution?
Is chilly and except...
Damon?
That is totally unacceptable.
Chili?
Has he been paying attention?
It is an Italian.
It's a nice Italian dinner.
I don't know what to say.
Like, I don't want to, like, judge people
and what they choose to bring to a potluck.
Maybe we have chili night at Travis's house,
like, you know,
down the line or something like that.
But it's not really, it's just not really,
it doesn't really meet the Lavolo Italian dinner,
Sunday night dinner style.
Damon, we're,
I don't mean to interrupt a mailbag Monday,
but we do have some breaking news here that the chat is talking about.
And it seems that we always get breaking news when we're in the middle of this doing the show.
Shout out to Nick Bacoro for purposefully doing that so that we have content to speak of.
But what they are saying is true.
According to Nick Bacoro,
according to this report.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are parting ways with longtime broadcaster Steve Berthium,
opting to not bring him back after 14 seasons as their television play-by-play voice.
Wow.
I mean, obviously a lot of people have criticized Berthium.
And again, a lot of people have wanted something new, something different.
I know we've probably been in on that, but it's unfortunate, I guess,
from the perspective of Steve Berthum's always been like a good guy, funny guy.
I've always enjoyed some of his banter on the broadcast.
His home run calls have always left something a little to be desired.
And again, we've also talked about how it does seem like at times he's almost antagonizing us when things aren't going our way on the broadcast.
I don't know if that's the best way to be a home team broadcaster.
But according to Derek Hall, he said his contract is up and we felt it was a good time to take a step back and reevaluate our broadcast.
He was here 14 years and was a great deback.
but it would appear that perhaps Chris Gersiola might take over on a television broadcast.
He has had some reps doing that and has done an excellent job both on the radio and on television.
So let's see.
Brian Abdallah is asking, where did he say this?
Go check out Nick Picoro's reporting.
Nick Picoro is the one that broke that news about 25 minutes ago.
This is something that recently happened this morning.
But overall, I do think that, again, this is a needed change.
And I think that it's probably how people also feel in a similar way about Tori.
Right.
It's, it's been a long time.
It don't really feel like it's been working.
And I think that it's time to give somebody else an opportunity.
So, yeah, as far as Chris Gersiola, it's, I mean, I'm excited for that.
I am definitely excited.
It does feel like that's the natural move here.
Again, that's just a speculating.
We don't really know if that's the case because that hasn't been announced yet by the team or isn't necessarily part of Nick's reporting.
But it does feel like it's a very natural, very natural, you know, connection there.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, shout out to Steve.
He was the longtime broadcaster.
I think that, you know, I was excited for Steve Berthew, man.
Coming over from Sports Center and stuff, I couldn't believe that we actually landed somebody of his caliber, if I'm being on.
when it happened.
But that's just because it was someone coming over from ESPN SportsCenter to be the
play-by-play broadcaster for our particular team.
I'm a huge sports center guy.
I won't lie about that.
I mean, listen, I've made it clear.
I'm not the biggest Steve Berthume guy in the entire world.
But as I've said with like Haven Smith this season and stuff, I never am going to like celebrate
somebody losing their job.
That just feels not right to me.
And if, you know, something unfortunate was to happen.
me in a business that we work in where people unfortunately get let go all the time,
I would hate it if people were celebrating in the streets, even though I know that that would
absolutely be the case.
Oh, it's good.
When I go, it's going to be a yub-nub-type festival for some of these people around here.
They're going to straight up turn into the Ewoks at the end of return of the jazz.
I would say posting clips of the Ewox dancing, posting oompa-lumba videos of everybody dancing
in the Willy Wonka factory.
But at the end of the day, I welcome this change.
Steve was here for a long time.
Yeah.
I think that it's more about Chris being very good though.
I was going to say.
If that's the replacement for Steve.
I was going to say that I think that the part for me that is the biggest pro here is that is that part of like almost the antagonization, Derek, that you mentioned where it just never felt like Steve was one of us.
And when Steve is is is broadcasting games and things aren't going well, it feels like he's got a big.
giant stick and while you're watching the game he's just poking you with it the entire time
whereas with chris like i know that he's going to be feeling the highs and lows of every
moment with us because that's a guy who grew up with this organization yeah his dad was the gm like
you know he he has grown up as a true diamond back like and i i taught myself as as that all the
time where i'm like i was born and the team was was a thing and then i went to the first ever
home playoff game in the crowd.
I was a little tiny infant child.
Chris was literally probably just like at every game when he was a tiny infant child.
Running the bases.
Actually, while he was in diapers, like scooting around the bases.
So it matters a lot to him.
And I like that from your broadcaster because it feels like he's going to be in the action with us
and that he's going to like feel it in his calls, which to me is a big positive
and something that I'm excited about if that's going to be the next move here.
Saul Bookman is here in the chat.
a rare Saul Bookman appearance with the,
I don't even know, is that really Saul Bookman?
That feels like that's just a fake burner account.
He definitely saw the Steve News and said,
I got to watch it to see what the boys are saying about this.
Thank you for your super chat, Saul.
He said, you guys aren't happy enough about this.
I need our play-by-play guy to feel as excited as I am about a damn game-winning home run.
He's not wrong about that at all.
No, I agree.
I just don't, listen, Saul, I think we're trying to be a little bit nicer.
Yeah, yeah, he says not celebrating someone losing their job,
but celebrating a new voice.
And I think it is more about the excitement of that potential,
even though that's not the announcement that's been made yet, right?
But yeah, Chris's calls on the radio when it comes to moments like Cattell's walk off
or, you know, even Ryan Walschman's walkoff are iconic, iconic.
So I feel like to have that on television is where it should be.
Your best broadcaster should be there.
And again, it really did feel like it was about enthusiasm, you know, perhaps,
and just true, true love of the team.
and love of the game.
Not again, not saying Steve didn't have that anymore,
but speaking as someone that has covered this baseball team
for what's going to be my 15th season next year.
Yeah, I don't have the spirit I used to have.
Those days are over.
The spirit, it's dead inside of me.
It's dead.
But anyway, big news, obviously there with the Steve Berthume stuff.
And again, it's an exciting change as far as if the potential replacement
there is someone that the fan base,
and we hear love as much as Chris Gersiola for sure.
But what else we got in the mailbag today, Damon?
Yeah, our next question here in the mailback.
Actually, you know, did we even answer all of the first one?
I feel like I did not give our guy all of his due.
Are you talking about Travis?
Travis, yeah.
I mean, yeah, we did.
He was just asking what it takes to get into Sunday dinner.
It's not chilly is what we decided upon.
Obviously, it's definitely being able to be excited about a home run.
That's got to be part of your getting into Sunday dinner for sure.
We got Jason here for the second question.
watching the postseason so far none of these teams are wildly better than the 26 debacks it feels like they could have been plugged into any of these games and not been blown out do you agree the roof ball was in fair territory per the rules and totally an out sorry san diego ringless bums i mean i i again like i know that we're on the side of like we don't want the podres to be successful and i'm totally fine with that but it's a good side my my i was my dad made a point to me yesterday and it's like if the ball hit off the outfield wall and you caught it and it didn't touch the ground
That's not an out.
So why should it be an out necessarily when it hits off the roof?
I don't know.
It just feels like it should be like a dead ball situation.
Or like a foul or cry about it, Padres.
Yeah, cry about it Padres.
Yeah, I'm with you.
All right.
And then what was Jason's other, Jason's first part there of his message or his question.
I think we missed that.
Did I miss that?
I already moved on from it.
I'm already lost on everything.
So far through two questions.
Derek disaster class.
It was the watching.
This first question, we didn't even address that part.
Yes, we addressed the foul ball thing.
But I mean, I think from the perspective of the Diamondbacks being in the playoffs and not have not being blown out, yes, I agree that they wouldn't have been blown out.
I agree that they would have been competitive.
I don't know if I can say confidently that they would have beat Atlanta, but I think that they would have had a chance.
I do think that what this team was built for was the postseason as we talked about time and time again throughout the year.
When we said that they are able to win close games, they're able to come back.
And especially their bullpen was able to keep games close so that they could come back.
So that seems like a recipe to have some success in the postseason.
You know, these games don't get out of control as far as the score is concerned.
So typically you have a chance to get back in it.
That's what we've seen.
That's what we expected.
And, you know, you feel like the Diamondbacks would have had a good chance in low-scoring games to, you know, perhaps pull out a wildcard win in advance.
right but I don't know if I could say that for sure I can say though in regards to what you're saying
I can say that I do feel like they would have had a good showing in the postseason and I don't feel
like it would have been a complete embarrassment maybe they don't win a game though and that in itself
might be embarrassing yeah it's possible I mean we'll never know but I do think that the diamondbacks
like they would have had so much momentum if they made the playoffs that I would have been liking
our chances against almost anybody to be truthful yeah yes that's that's
the bigger part is that they would have had to be hot at the right time. And yeah, you're right
about that. All right. What else we got? Flee ball says, how come the debacks never played Gabby at
first base, not once this year. McCann was fairly good at the plate. Gabby at first base would have
helped first base numbers and put someone else at DH. I don't hate that other than the idea that,
you know, once you start converting a player to a first baseman like that, it starts to go down that path.
I feel like, right?
And Gabby's a very valuable defensive catcher.
Gabby's too valuable.
And I mean, even though they aren't great at developing guys, I still feel like he's being developed.
I still feel like he's in the process of getting better and getting better behind the play, which is far more, I think far more valuable to this team than, you know, a first baseman.
First baseman can be filled in a lot of ways and it doesn't necessarily take the skill set that a catcher has behind the dish.
I just also get what he's saying as far as putting the best
offensive lineup out there.
You could have had James McCann behind the plate
who was like the Diamondback's third best hitter at one point.
You could add Gabby over there at first
and then you could have had somebody else in DH.
Unfortunately, they just didn't have the greatest options
that would have made that DH role seem, you know,
extremely valuable.
Like what Lars Neubar or whoever's not in the outfield over there?
Maybe Vargas?
you know again it doesn't feel like whoever they would have put a dh would have been
you know the thing that put them over the top but who knows i i think mark is is right here like
i think that they probably should have had james mccan play first base rather than gabbie more so but
that i agree with that's far more because you just don't want to turn gabby into that i'm sure gabby
doesn't want to turn himself into that it's like when a starter you know kind of is okay with becoming a
reliever once you go into the bullpen you don't know if you're ever going to get out of that bullpen you just
just don't. So sometimes as a starter, you've got to protect your position and just not allow that
to even happen because once you start going in that direction, that could be where you live now.
And that might not be what you want. What's best for your career? We're going to take a quick break,

What do we got today?
We got Craig Jr. wondering Corbyn Carroll's 17 triples the season added three expected runs compared with doubles, only one or two.
extra runs actually scoring because he's reached third.
Does this mean the offensive value of his triples is smaller than the highlight
reels imply?
Oh, right.
D-backs can't batting.
Yes.
I mean, yes, it's more of an indictment of the fact that his teammates couldn't get
him in when he had less than two outs and he's standing there on third base.
So there's that.
Corbin's also very fast and likely scores on base hits when he's on second base as well.
So I think that that probably factors into it a little bit, wouldn't you say?
Yeah, for sure.
Like he's going to score regardless if a ball finds the grass typically from second base
because he's just a good base runner and he's so fast.
But I do think that that is a little bit more of an indictment on the guy's not able to knock him in.
I also agree that his triples made his season look much better than his season actually was.
And that's not trying to bash Corbyn, but I'm saying the triples were a big part of his OPS,
a big part of how many bases he acquired.
I mean, those triples were huge for his season.
Not only is he just outpacing the pack by, you know, more than double and is already the active leader in triples, but he, again, is very good at turning a double into a triple.
He's very good at base running, as Damon said.
Overall, though, I think that, you know, there is something to be, like Corbyn's like, again, my fantasy football team is terrible, so I can't stop thinking about fantasy football.
It's like a running back that can get you all sorts of yards, you know, but then when you get down.
of the goal line and you're four yards away, you don't run the ball in. You don't get a touchdown
with your running back. You try to throw it four times with Jacoby Presett's arm and instead you don't
get a touchdown and you throw a pick six, right? Did you lose again this week? No, I probably will.
I haven't lost yet, but I will probably lose. But it's more about that that's what Corbyn Carroll's
kind of season felt like with those triples. It felt like he was able to get all of these yards.
It was able to drive down the field, but then just stall out on the 20 yard line, stall out.
on the four yard line without ever crossing that end zone.
So there's that.
But what else we got, Damon?
We also have a question here from Gabriel who says,
what's worse?
The Dodgers getting their three-pe and confirming the lockout or the Padreys
winning a World Series and having to hear their fans go.
But we're champs.
I think we can all agree that Jackson Churio is one of our closest friends right now.
Can we have neither of those things happen?
That's what I would appreciate.
Can both teams lose?
Obviously, that would suck either way.
but I'm always everybody over the Dodgers at the end of the day.
That is my mentality.
I agree.
I don't love the Padres.
I don't like the Padres.
I'm not rooting for the Padres.
But if the Padres won it,
it would feel better than watching the Dodgers win again.
Any team left in the postseason besides maybe the Yankees would feel much better than the Dodgers winning it.
And even if the Yankees won it over the Dodgers,
I feel like that would still feel better than the Dodgers winning it.
You know,
it's just something.
Some sort of confirmation that life is fair and things can balance out and that those people that went out there and scam their ways into having the biggest payroll and the best team in baseball don't get their way all the time.
That's what I want.
So yes, even if it involves a Padres win, I would rather that.
But folding chairs right.
Folding Chable?
Yes.
I like folding Chable a lot.
Padres will never win a ring.
They are ringless bums for a reason.
All right, let's get to one more.
We got one more from Sean.
It's, I think, like a three-parter from the Discord.
What do we got there?
Sean asks us, Derek, number one, what did Tori and the misses prepare for the first Sunday dinner after his extension?
Were there appropriate appetizers for the occasion, Gabagool, and what have you?
There were, actually, it was kind of, I mean, it's never bad.
It was, it was, it was, it was, it was spaghetti a carbonara, right?
I think is what it was.
And it was, it's a classic.
It's not going to act like it's not a class.
But I was thinking that if it was going to be like a real like celebration, I thought we were going to bring out like some, you know, again, the lemon stuff brand, Branzino is just incredible.
So there was also a terrible lack of chocolate peanut butter ice cream, which I understood was all eaten when Tori thought he wasn't going to return.
And that bummed me out because chocolate peanut butter ice cream is also my favorite.
And yeah, they didn't make Gabagool this time.
It was, again, it was celebratory, but it was also like a two-year deal.
Come on.
All right, what else?
What else do you have to ask?
He goes on to ask, while it is far less stressful, we're reading for other teams in the playoffs,
let's go White Sox, aka God's team.
It is God's team.
How do you think we would have fared against Atlanta?
I don't know, man.
I don't have the utmost confidence other than the Diamondbacks played well.
against Atlanta during the season.
So from that perspective, I did think that we had a chance.
I felt like I liked our chances better against Atlanta
than perhaps playing the Cubs at Wrigley
or the Padres in San Diego again.
They did win the season series versus the Braves by one game.
Yeah.
I just think also when it comes to the Braves,
there's a good chance that what we saw them do to the Phillies
and how the Phillies struggled to score,
we would have, I felt like been in a very similar position struggling to score.
So, I don't know.
Plus, it's just the two games and it's away games.
I feel like it would have just been too easy to get swept by whoever, you know,
whoever was the one holding home field advantage there.
But anyway, we thank you guys so much for your questions.
You guys are wonderful.
Sean, we love you.
Jason, we love you.
