Welcome in to another episode of feedback recap.
My name is Derek Monti, occasionally known as the mayor of HNX.
I'm thrilled to have you guys here and we'll be talking about yet another series win by our snakes,
this time beating the Philadelphia Phillies two games out of three and taking the finale here by a score of four to three.
And what more can we say than other than in Jose Fernandez we trust?
I know that they lost game two with him in the starting lineup.
so they're no longer perfect,
but the Arizona Diamondbacks are still eight and one with Fernandez in the starting lineup.
And good things happen when you start Jose.
Diamondbacks offense did not get a lot going today,
but they actually did a great job once again of manufacturing runs in this game
and finding a way to score against an interesting starting pitching situation for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Andrew Painter, who is their young stud, was scratched like 20 minutes before the first pitch,
and he was replaced by Zach Pop, only for Painter to come back in in the third inning
and be very, very good against this Arizona Diamondbacks team.
But early on, the debacks were able to put up a run in the second inning against Pop
when Nolan Arnato, who has really struggled to get going,
single on a fly ball, the left field of Brandon Marsh that he kind of botched.
And then James McCann with one out, doubles once again, the mechanical, big body James
McCann, sexy man James McCann, doubles, drives in the first run and gives the Diamondbacks a
one-oh lead that Zach Gallen held on to for a substantial amount of the game.
In fact, Gallen was fairly outstanding in this game.
He did a great job of keeping, you know, batters off balance.
he was good with his fastball command.
Kyle Schwabber got on in the first inning with a single,
but then he got Bryce Harper to ground into a double play.
And then it was just more of the same throughout the game.
I mean, there was runners, there was base runners occasionally,
but Zach Gallen did a great job of handling everything until the sixth inning.
And it was unfortunate because everybody,
every single human being that Zach Gallen knows apparently was at this baseball game
altogether in one section.
And again, he looked incredible until that.
sixth inning when suddenly Gallen could not get an out and things started to fall apart for him.
He gave up four extra base hits, including a huge home run that tied the game, I believe.
At that point, it was originally a double, but then it was reviewed and it did look like it
went over, hit a railing and bounced back in the play.
That was from Trey Turner, and that was his first home run of the year that tied the ballgame
at two. But again, Gallen led off that inning with a double to Justin Crawford, that home run,
then another double to Kyle Schwerber, then another double to Bryce Harper that scored Schwerber
and gave Philly the lead at the time three to two. Then Brandon Marsh singled, and that was the end of
Gallen's day. Gallen, of course, was outstanding until he suddenly wasn't. And we've said that
about Gallen in the past. And we've also said that entirely too much about Brandon Fott, who
also had the same thing happened to him in game two of this series.
But Gallen ends up going five innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs.
He walked one and struck out two.
And the sad part was at that point, Gallen was like positioned to have himself a nice
long outing.
His pitch count was in the mid-60s and he appeared to be cruising through this
outing overall.
But again, once you tried to go through that Philly's lineup for a third time, they saw all
they needed to see out of Zach, and they quickly jumped all over him in that inning and gave
themselves a lead. Diamondbacks, meanwhile, still had a bit of a trouble scoring. Again,
in the top of the sixth inning, Corby and Carroll, excuse me, Vargas led things off with a double.
Then Carol walks. Then you have Jose Fernandez singling and getting Vargas over to third. Corbyn Carroll
to second, got bases loaded for Nolan Arnato, who hits a sack fly to Adoles Garcia and drives in
the Diamondback's second run.
at the time, making it two to nothing before the Phillies tied it and took the lead in the
bottom of the inning.
But overall, even though he struggled, it was nice to see Aronado involved in the Diamondbacks
offense today.
He was part of both of those runs.
They scored early in this game.
But once the Phillies went to their bullpen and sent Andrew Painter to the bench, who was really
good still, even though he could not start with that migraine, the debacks were once again
able to attack yet another bullpen and get rid of.
results and this time it was Alvarado for the Jose Alvarado for the Phillies of the
Diamondbacks were able to jump all over there late so it was great you had Corby and Carol
leading off the eighth inning top of the eighth inning with a single and then Perdomo
bumps into the forced out right so Carol is out at second just barely it looked like
Perdomo had laid down a pretty good bump but it kind of got stuck in the dirt right in
front of the catcher who you know that's that's a that's a pretty good catcher over there for
the Marshawn, he's, he's pretty good there for the Phillies.
But of course, Geraldo Perdomo does get on first base.
Then a key part of this is that he steals second and then gets himself into scoring position.
Once again, for young Jose Fernandez, who drives him in with an RBI single.
Credit to Perdomo for the steal and getting into scoring position.
Credit to Fernandez for delivering yet another huge hit in a big situation like this.
He was two for four today with an RBI, a run.
scored and one strikeout.
Jose Fernandez is hitting 333 with an 861 OPS and continues to be a huge driving force
behind the Diamondbacks early success.
They now improved a nine and seven and it's impressive, but nothing was more impressive
than what the Diamondbacks bullpen was able to do today.
With Gallin failing like he did, there were runners on third and first and Johnny
freaking lasagna, Jonathan Loisigua comes into the game.
and just gets three outs in a row, not allowing a runner to score,
not allowing a runner to advance and getting out of the jam
with the Diamondback still just having a one run deficit at the time.
And the bullpen just did that the rest of the time.
Kevin Ginkle had himself a little bit of a problem.
He gave up one walk and one hit.
He had to come out early of his inning and work.
But Taylor Clark was strong in his inning.
One inning pitched, one hit allowed.
Ginkle again, just a third of an inning pitch.
before he had to be pulled.
And Tori Lovolo, again, pulled all the right strings in this one
because he did not hesitate once Ginkle had faced three batters to pull him out of the
game and go to Ryan Thompson, who gets the job done.
He gets the hold and gets out of that inning.
It's huge eighth inning there, too, with the batters that they faced.
I mean, just to lock it down and, you know, again, bend, but not break there with Ginkle,
giving up two base runners and Ryan Thompson slamming the door.
But then Paul Seawald comes in in the bottom of the bottom of the,
the ninth and gets two huge strikeouts and gets out of the game with his fifth save of the season
cannot say enough about what this diamond back's bullpen has been able to do this season it's
it's outstanding and surprising i mean it's as shocking right now as as as anything right because
you know we have talked often about how you know they just don't really have you know
the guys to get it done, especially if you were planning on relying on Seawald there to be your closer in the ninth inning.
But if they would just stop putting Paul Seawald in in non-save situations, this team actually wouldn't be having a problem.
Seawald wouldn't be having a problem.
Even with the Diamondbacks having those huge runs allowed by Joe Ross, who is no longer on the Major League roster and five-earned runs there being attributed to James McCann.
The Diamondbacks bullpen has a 4.50 ERA this season.
It's not great, but you know what?
It's not bottom five in baseball any longer.
It's 22nd.
And if you honestly took out five of those earned runs and let's just say 10 of those earned runs,
things are looking much different overall here for this Diamondbacks team.
They would have allowed 18 earned runs over 56 innings pitch.
I guess you might also have to take out some innings pitch there,
considering if you want to take out, you know, do that.
But let's just say leaving it at 50 innings, right?
That would put the Diamondbacks bullpen, ERA, at 3.24, which would be tied for 10th best right now
with the Detroit Tigers in all of MLB.
And we've said it, man.
you give this team a league average bullpen and a slightly above league average starting rotation
and they're going to win you a lot of baseball games as it stands right now the diamondbacks
have won a surprising amount of baseball games so far here in the month of april it's april 12th
and the diamondbacks are nine and seven two games above 500 and i know i said the i said the thing
and I know once again this is an audio only podcast, but Perdomo, get up that mountain.
I know you can't see them, but I know you can see them, right?
Like I know you can't physically see him because this is an audio only podcast,
but I know deep down in your heart of hearts, your heart feels them, your soul feels them,
and it generates the image in front of your eyes.
That's this team climbing Mount 500 and honestly staying up at the top right now for
at least a few games, right?
Now they take on a fairly hot Baltimore Orioles team
that they have to keep this thing rolling.
But so far, so good when it comes to this East Coast road trip,
they've now won both of their series,
one against the Mets, two to three,
and now one against the Phillies two games out of three.
This is a fun team, as our guy Alex D'Agostino tweeted,
this is a fun team to watch.
No matter what, no matter win or lose,
They're making these games exciting.
They're keeping them close.
And most importantly, they're finding a way to win close baseball games.
And this is their offense still at like 50%.
Right?
I think Jordan Lawler's return is going to kickstart things and give them a boost.
I think Lordus Guerriel's return is going to give them a boost.
I think when they get pitching back, we're going to see this team just get a boost from that as well.
So again, there's lots of players still.
set to come back from injury
not too long from now and I think again
this team just needed to kind of
keep themselves as close
to 500 as possible.
Right now this looks like a
winning team that
wants to make the postseason
with the way that they are currently constructed
not needing any additional pieces.
I hope that they continue
to evaluate the bullpen and I do think
that some changes still need to be made.
I do think though that they have themselves
a great set of guys that are very surprising as far as what they've been able to deliver for this team.
And it's making fans, it's making Tori, it's making everyone feel confident that if this team can get,
keep a game close late, their offense can win it and their and their bullpen can hold it down.
And that's a game changer for this team after what we've had to live through for these last two seasons.
still a small sample size 16 baseball games not going to get crazy however kudos to everyone involved
for specifically getting this pitching staff both starting pitching staff and bullpen on track
it's a shame what happened to act today because he was on pace to have himself one of his
best outings of the season until that sixth inning came around so again still a lot of encouraging
things there, even though he gave up eight hits and those runs, but more, more encouraging things
from what this bullpen has been able to do. So we will be back on Monday with another 12 p.m.
show. Make sure to join us for that. Till the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter or social
media, wherever the hell you want to find me at. I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.
Our show is at pH and X underscore Dbacks, but as always, all roads lead to at pH and X underscore
sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. We thank you guys.
love you guys. We love Jose Fernandez. Again, this team eight and one with Jose Fernandez in
this lineup and cannot say enough about what this young man is able to bring the versatility,
the way he was able to switch today and deliver the diamondbacks, both solid defense at
first, even though they made a little bit of a mistake there over at first and switch over there
to third and play third base. So again, just a lot of good things happen when Jose Fernandez is
in the lineup. Let's not forget that. But appreciate
your time. We'll see you on Monday at 12 p.m.
Until then, have yourselves a wonderful Sunday.
And remember, kids, baseball is fun,
but it is so much more fun
when Jose Fernandez is
winning baseball games for your team.
