Hello and welcome in to another edition of D-BACs recap.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX,
and I am thrilled to be here talking about the Arizona Diamondbacks
finishing off their three games series with the Mets with a big seven to one victory,
taking game three and the series two games to one over New York.
It was a big night here for the Diamondbacks five through nine hitters
who had some key contributions late
that finally allowed this offense
to wake up after a slow start in this game.
And Eduardo Rodriguez was outstanding,
once again on the mound,
this time taking on another stellar pitcher,
his WBC championship game rival,
Nolan McLean, who started tonight for the Mets.
And both pitchers were outstanding tonight in this game.
Eduardo Rodriguez gave up a home run
in the first inning, and that was pretty much the only run that was scored here. That was by
Luis Robert Jr. That was the first extra base hit that Erod has allowed all season long. But Erod
just locked in after that as he's done all season long and he continues to be one of the Diamondbacks
best starting pitchers. And their rotation is an absolute strength for this team right now. But
early on like I said he gave up that home run to Luis Robert Jr. in that first inning,
but then he did what he does. He started getting some strikeouts. He got in the next inning,
Marcus Simeon and Francisco Alvarez both out on strikeouts. And then he just kind of gave up singles
here and there, gave up a few walks, but nothing, no major danger. And it was another night where
Eduardo Rodriguez was not getting much run support from his team once again. And that's something
that has been the case. In fact, before the seventh inning in this game, the Diamondbacks had given Erod two whole runs of run support in three starts. And those two runs came in that first game of the year for Erod against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But luckily in this one, that trend did not continue for the Diamondbacks. And like I said earlier, it was their five through nine hitters that did the job in this one. And it took a while. But eventually,
the offense got going there in the seventh inning. Prior to the seventh inning,
I believe the Diamondbacks only had two hits. One was from Tim Tawa, and one was from Jose
Fernandez, who started in this game and should start in every game, because when you start
Jose Fernandez, good things happen. I do believe that the Diamondbacks are undefeated now in
games where Jose Fernandez has started, and he was a big part of that seventh inning.
Heraldo Pordomo had a lead-off walk. ADC struck out swinging.
and then Jose Fernandez singled to put two runners on,
and the Diamondbacks at that time were still down one to nothing.
Nolan McLean leaves the game finally after being a real problem to the Diamondbacks all night long.
He totaled up eight strikeouts.
He went six in a third inning.
He gave up only three hits, and at that point hadn't allowed any runs.
Former Arizona Diamondback pitcher Luke Weaver came into the game for the Mets,
and we got to experience the other side of a bullfell.
pen meltdown after an outstanding start from a pitcher because from that point on the diamond
backs really started putting it to the met's bullpen gabriel morano came in as a pinch hitter to
replace james mccann who was struggling and has struggled all year long mccan's hitting 0 71 he was
0 for two in this game with two strikeouts prior to being replaced by moreno and gabby does what gabby does
uly immediately doubled uh bringing in heraldo perdomo for the diamondbacks first run of the game and
tying this game up at one.
Then the very next batter was Alec Thomas, who reached on a weird play.
Well, with one out, met some first baseman, Mark Viantos, decided to come home to try to get Jose Fernandez and prevent him from scoring.
Instead of trying to get the out, the sure out at first base, that would kind of come to cost the Mets some more runs in this inning because instead of taking the sure out, they get no outs.
Jose Fernandez slides in right ahead of the throw, and he scores to make it a two, a two, one.
lead for the diamondbacks and that's all they would really need but they would not stop the
offense would keep their foot on the pedal tim towah would bring in gabriel merino on a sack fly
to make it a three one game and then horre brosa steps up and gets a big rbi i triple they're scoring
alec thomas and putting the diamondbacks up four to one and then again we just had more of the same
in the top of the eighth inning uh ildemarovar vargas who you cannot say enough about uh had a lead off double
in the inning on a sharp line drive to right field.
Perdomo walked, and then Adrian Del Castillo comes back up to the plate,
and this time he gets a big double that scores Bargi
and Geraldo Perdomo gets over to third.
Jose Fernandez brings in Perdomo with a groundout,
and then Gabriel Moreno in his second at-bat in this game,
doubles once again another RBI double on a sharp fly ball to center field,
scoring ADC and putting the Diamondbacks up 7 to 1,
which would ultimately be the end score of this game.
But cannot say enough about Eduardo Rodriguez.
He continues to be outstanding for this team,
as does the majority of their starting rotation.
Erod now has a 0.50 ERA after allowing that one earned run in this game.
He went six innings pitched, giving up five hits,
one earn run, two walks, and striking out three.
Meanwhile, the bullpins.
came in and did an excellent job.
The tailors, the two tailors come into this game,
and they took care of business for the Diamondbacks.
Taylor Rashi and Taylor Clark both come in.
Taylor Clark gets an inning of work, and he only gives up one hit,
but zero's across the board outside of that.
And Taylor Rashi, who was recently called up,
continues to give the Diamondbacks some good work out of the bullpen.
He gave them two innings today,
preventing them from having to burn another bullpen armor,
or bring in Seawald or Loisaga in this one,
and he gets three strikeouts.
So you can't help but think if Rashi is able to contribute like this to the bullpen
and perhaps be consistent.
They might have found themselves a guy that can eat up multiple innings
and could really help save this bullpen as far as innings.
You know, like that is going to be a problem for Tori as the season goes on
because it feels like he's going to consistently still lean on guys that he can trust.
However, that pool of guys that he can trust seems to be expanding and getting bigger.
And it feels pretty good that the bullpen was able to quietly come in and just take care of business without making this exciting,
without allowing a bunch of base runners to get on.
And this game just ends a game that looked very close,
a game that was one-nothing in favor of the Mets for the majority of the game,
ends in somewhat of a route here by the Diamondbacks winning 7-1.
They take the game and the series,
and the Diamondbacks have only lost that opening series.
now against the Dodgers where they got swept every other series they either split with the Braves or have won so some good things are happening here diamondbacks are seven and six and they are one game above 500 and I know this is an audio only podcast but I think you guys know what that means I know you can't see him but we still had to send little perdomo up the mountain so
And you can hear them. You can hear them. That's all that's important here.
But this was a big win. This one feels very important on this East Coast road trip that the Diamondbacks are currently on.
This is a daunting schedule this month. And so far, the Diamondbacks have come out of this first stretch that was, that looked really difficult with a winning record.
It doesn't feel like they need to be 10 games over 500 or anything crazy like that for,
us to consider this opening month of April slash March to be a success.
There's a lot of tough battles ahead of them, including one that starts on Friday in Philadelphia.
You just feel like momentum is kind of on their side and you have some confidence building.
More importantly, the Diamondbacks are getting some of the best starting pitching that they've gotten in years.
In fact, right now the Diamondbacks have a 2.88.
rotation ERA. Starting pitching ERA is 2.88. It is the sixth best starting rotation ERA in all
a baseball. In fact, they came into play today having the third best ERA in the National League,
and they actually lowered it. It was 3.01 coming into play today, and Erod's one earned run lowered
it to 2.88. But the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to get amazing starting pitching. They slid in
at 2.87.
So they have just one little tenth of a ERA point better than the Diamondbacks.
So they are essentially the fourth best or yeah,
Diamondbacks are the fourth best starting pitching ERA right now.
The National League behind the Pirates,
the Braves who sit at 2.79 for their staff and the Cubs who are currently 2.72.
But they just lost a big piece of their starting rotation.
So it's going to be interesting to see what happens for the Cubs now.
But as far as the Diamondbacks are concerned,
things are looking good and it feels like again they are peaking at the right time the biggest
takeaways here though again is that the five through five through nine hitters today were six for
19 and had six rbi those are the guys that are getting it done and those are the guys that honestly
like you don't expect to get this level of contributions from however that's why they're
winning baseball games ilamar vargas who technically wasn't part of that group today he was hitting
second in in lieu of the missing Corbyn Carroll who had a little bit of a hip issue and was given
the day off Vargas Vargas, Vargas hitting 458 with a 1250 OPS.
You have Jose Fernandez, who I'm ready to build the statue of outside of Chase Field hitting
333 with a 958 OPS.
More importantly, I do believe, I do declare that the dive-of-backs are undefeated when Jose
Fernandez is in the starting lineup.
So, hey, guess what?
Start him.
please for the love of God start this man.
Gabby Moreno two for two today with two RBI and two double.
He's now up to 282 on his batting average with a 751 OPS.
Dynbacks are still terrible when it comes to their challenges.
They lost all of their challenges today, both of their challenges.
They were O for two.
Mets were 0 for one.
So the umpires were on point.
But a big day again here for the dimebacks late.
More specifically, it was great to see after that big,
four-run seventh inning that they came back immediately and added three more on in the eighth.
That again is that that's what we need to see out of this team.
We've seen them this season already and last year be able to put up that big number in one inning,
but they often have a hard time following it up.
In this case, it took them a while to get going offensively because Nolan McLean was dealing.
He was dealing.
There was one point, I think it might have been his strikeout,
of Adrian Del Castillo where that man threw three different pitches and he threw all three in the exact same spot.
And it was like a four seam sweeper slider, I want to say, all in the exact same spot.
Didn't even seem fair.
Didn't even seem fair.
But again, this was a patient Diamondbacks team that waited him out.
They were able to drive up his pitch count.
Still had to link the outing going six and a third.
But once Luke Weaver came into the game, the Diamondbacks were really able to take advantage there of the Mets bullpen and jump all over them and win.
this game 7 to 1. So just feels good.
Feels good. Soak it in.
And hopefully the Diamondbacks can come back and get,
keep this thing rolling. Not get this thing rolling.
This thing is rolling. We are a wagon, folks.
That might be too early for that, but we'll probably bring that back.
Regardless, though, we will be back with a postgame show on Friday night after game
one of that Philadelphia Phillies series. So make sure to join us for that.
In the meantime, you can follow me on social media. I am at Kapp underscore Caveman with a K,
