Starting point is 00:00:11 Hello and welcome in to another edition of DeBax recap right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX, and I am here to talk about the Diamondbacks actually scoring enough runs in a baseball game to win one, beating the Houston Astros on Saturday night by a score 4 to 3 in 10 innings. And it was great to see the Diamondbacks. finally get out of their offensive slump that they were in. I believe they were 0 for 21 with runners in scoring position dating back to last Sunday coming into the series. And it was just a nice night. Overall, the Diamondbacks got exactly what they needed, even though it took 10 innings to get the job done.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Brandon Fott was pretty brilliant overall. Six and a third innings pitched. He did give up seven hits, but he did only give up three earned runs. two walks and he struck out four in this win. More importantly, though, the Diamondbacks were able to come back from a two-run deficit that they were in early. And it was another one of those nights. If you were watching this game that looked like this offense was not going to be able to produce more than one run, maybe not even one run, took them until the fifth inning for them to score their first run in this game tonight. and that first run came by way of essentially a sack fly from Geraldo Perdomo that scored Tim Tawa.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Tim Tawa led off the inning with a leadoff single. He did advance on a Waldschmidt ground out and then advance further on a Newtbar single that put runners on the corners with just one out. Pardomo's sack fly did give the Diamondbacks their first run of this game. But again, in the bottom of the fifth, Astros tack. on another run and the diamondbacks found themselves down three to one. And I think that was the position where it truly felt like this is where the diamondbacks have been entirely too often lately in the series with the Phillies and now here in this series with the Astros.
Starting point is 00:02:26 They found themselves down three to one. And I think that's probably the most frustrating like score tally. they've, you know, they've been in, right? Because you can't be mad at the pitching staff. You can't be mad at Brandon fought for going out there and giving you a quality start, giving you six of the third innings pitched and three earned runs. You can't be mad at this bullpen for going out there and giving you, you know, two and two-thirds solid in the nine innings of this game without any runs scoring, right?
Starting point is 00:03:00 So this is just frustrating because you feel like for all intents and purposes, is the Diamondback should be winning games like this. However, over the last week, they've lost entirely too many games like this, including the series opener here against the Houston Astros. It also goes back to the series opener against the Phillies that they lost two to one, and the fact that this offense was only able to muster up four runs or one run in four straight games. I mean, I can't even, I still can't even wrap my mind around that. Luckily, we avoided the dreadful, you know, five-game stretch,
Starting point is 00:03:40 which I believe the Chicago Cubs set the record for five straight games with just one run scored. And we get a much needed win. We get a win and the Diamondbacks improved to 75 and 68 with this win. The Padres lost to the New York Yankees. so that means that the Diamondbacks right now are in firm control of a wild card spot. And I mean, again, this was another one run victory for the Diamondbacks, which as we've discussed in the past, they continue to be one of the top teams in Major League Baseball
Starting point is 00:04:22 that have played in one-run games and have one-run victories. And they currently hold a half-a-game lead over the San Diego Padres, who are now 74 and 68, just that half a game. behind the debacks. It's hard not to feel like that final series of the season is going to be the determining factor for who makes it into the playoffs for these two teams. But tonight, the determining factor for the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:04:51 was Cotel Marte. Cotel Marte in the eighth inning hit a solo home run. It was his only hit of the game. He was one for five tonight. But it was by far, Marte's most important home run, most important hit, since all of this drama has come up. It was a lead-off home run in the eighth inning,
Starting point is 00:05:15 and it tied the game up at three. It's Marte's 22nd home run of the year. It went 388 feet to right field, and it was 101.1 miles per hour off the bat. It's the exact kind of hit that the Diamondbacks needed. It doesn't feel like they've had anybody in their lineup that has delivered this kind of, you know, game-changing hit in a while. And, you know, it is very fitting that it was Cattel-Marté to finally get this offense right.
Starting point is 00:05:50 You know, they were down three to two prior to this. And that Marte home run was the difference maker as far as sending this game into extra in-extra in-innings in the 10th inning. you had Perdomo who got out on a sack bunt. He moved the ghost runner who was Ildemar Vargas over to third base. And then Vargas came home on a Gabriel Moreno RBI single, which proved to be the game winner. Overall, Moreno obviously has been the most consistent offensive force this year.
Starting point is 00:06:25 But again, it kind of goes back to like how fitting it is that Marte and Moreno were the guys that stepped up late. and won this game for this team. It feels like those guys are the guys that need to get it done. It's also very good to see Corbyn Carroll. At the very least, have a multi-hit game once again that included an extra-based hit. He had a double early in this game.
Starting point is 00:06:47 He was stranded, which didn't feel great early, considering the offensive struggles that they've had. But it did feel good to see Corbyn Carroll go two for five tonight with an RBI. And again, also good for this team. to win this very, very crucial game against the Houston Astros and give themselves a chance to possibly win this series against Houston. They go on to take on a Kansas City Royals team after this, and then beyond that, things aren't easy, right?
Starting point is 00:07:19 So the Diamondbacks need to kind of stack some wins here, not saying that this Astros team, by any stretch of the imagination, is a pushover. But this is the kind of team right now that they really do need to stack some wins against. At least this feels good. This win in game two alleviates a little bit of the pressure. You know, they're not going to get swept now, and you feel like, you know, they can go for the win still despite the way that things worked out on Monday, or excuse me, on Friday, in game one of this series. But we need our boys back. And Marte hitting this home run that tied the game up definitely feels like we are getting close to being back.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Offensively, the guys that are here in the starting lineup really do need to figure things out. I will say that I am with a lot of people on social media that feel that Max Kepler starting in tonight's game and starting in any more games is kind of unnecessary. And I know that that might come off as disrespectful to Kepler. but let's be honest he's not eligible for postseason play and he's not going to be a member of this team most likely beyond the end of this season maybe the diamondbacks bring him back i have no way of knowing that if i knew the future i wouldn't be here doing this podcast i would be a millionaire and i'd be on a beach
Starting point is 00:08:49 and a biza even at this time of night but with that being said i will say that my my feelings here overall is that Kepler most likely won't be back on this team. And considering he's not eligible for postseason play, it does feel fairly egregious that the at-bats that could be going to Jordan Lawler, the at-bats that could be going to Ryan Waldschmidt are being cut into here by Max Kepler. I mean, even, I know he wasn't performing well, but even Lordus Guriel feels like it would make more sense getting at-bats in the lineup rather than Kepler overall. So hopefully we'll see that transition over to the guys that if this team does make the postseason, we'll be there in the starting lineup as part of this postseason play.
Starting point is 00:09:39 This win, though, very important. Not only was it important as far as moving them back into having control of the final wildcard spot in the National League, but it also feels very important as far as just momentum is concerned. you feel like too many of these low-scoring games from this team really is going to creep into the players' minds about their offense and their lack of production. And, you know, again, as I said yesterday, it feels like it's just a snowball. It feels like it's just getting worse. The more that they try to get out of this slump, the more that they can't. You know, the bigger the hole is that they deep.
Starting point is 00:10:22 dig themselves into here overall. But this win, very big, very big for this Diamondbacks team. And again, like I said, they go for the series win now on Sunday. And you feel pretty good about that overall, considering that the Diamondbacks will be sending Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound for the finale. So looking forward to that overall. But of course, we appreciate you guys checking out the show. Appreciate you guys being here. As always, you can make sure to follow me on social media at Kapp underscore

Starting point is 00:11:20 So join us for that. And until then, behave yourselves, enjoy this win. Stop giving up on this team. We have 24 days left in the season. All right, we can all collectively go on vacation if they don't make the postseason on the 30th. But until then, just like the players in the lineup, we got to stay dialed in.
Starting point is 00:11:43 You got to stay dialed in. So let's all stay dialed in. And of course, we'll be back with another live episode of our show on Tuesday at 12 p.m. We are off on Monday for Labor Day. I hope you're off on Monday for Labor Day. But until then, behave yourselves. Once again, I remember kids, baseball is fun,
Starting point is 00:12:01 but it's so much more fun when your offense finally gets going and Cattel Marte is hitting game-changing home runs.
